WELCOME TO GABS 2023
It’s hard to believe that another year has passed! Welcome to the 12th edition of GABS Festival, it’s so good to have you back in Mellbourne, Sydney and Brisbane - thank you for being here! And a huge thank you to all of our amazing partners, brewers and exhibitors who help make GABS what it is – SPECTAPULAR!
As passionate advocates for the craft beer industry, we want to showcase to every Australian the diverse range of flavours, styles, breweries and wonderful consumers like you that make up our exciting craft community.
We pride ourselves on bringing people together for exceptional experiences which is exactly why this year, there truly is something for everyone at GABS!
We are thrilled to welcome back some international rockstars with California’s Sierra Nevada, the USA’s first billion dollar independent brewery and global sensation,
Cloudwater from Manchester in the UK. Both these breweries will be pouring GABS exclusives and a range of their famous core beers.
Although beer takes centre stage, GABS is an experience like none other! With debuts from Archie Rose, Monkey Shoulder Whisky and Yellow Tail Wines along with some seltzers, ciders and low / no alcohol options, the GABS experience ensures all palates are catered for.
Add to that the many wonderful brewery activations, entertainment, food and prizes on offer, the GABS experience is something we hope you will continue to share with good friends. After all, the more people that discover GABS for the first time and start their craft journey with a tasting paddle or take part in a fun brewery activation, the stronger our wonderful brewing industry becomes.

HOW TO TASTE BEER
LOOK
First things first! Pour your beer into a clear glass, pause and take a good look at it. Raise the beer in front of you but don't hold it up to direct light. Pay attention to the colour, clarity, foam and consistency.
SWIRL
Gently swirl the beer in the glass to unlock its aromas, stimulate carbonation and test head retention.
SMELL
Take two quick sniffs through your nose and then one long one. Try breathing with your mouth open and closed and take note of what you sense.
TASTE
Take a small sip but don’t swallow right away. Instead, allow the beer to linger in your mouth which will allow the beer’s characteristics and flavours to shine through. Fruity, smoky, smooth? What do you experience.
MOUTHFEEL
How does the beer feel in your mouth? It could be light and airy or it might be heavy and viscous? Is it very bubbly? The mouthfeel will be different depending on the style of beer, brewing methods and ingredient quality.
EVALUATE
Take notes! Beer tasting is an individual experience. The more tasting you do it, the better you’ll get at understanding your own preferences.
When tasting a beer, there’s so much more than swilling it down. Even though tasting is an individual thing, there are a few steps which if followed will take your beer tasting to a blissful level.

BRIDGE ROAD BREWERS
Bridge Road Brewers, it’s a Beechworth icon that’s never been afraid to punch above its weight.
As more craft brewers become part of major multinational ownership structures, Bridge Road Brewers has kept its values of independence and unflinching authenticity at the absolute core of its being. It’s this dedication to the craft which has kept them producing beers that excite their brewers and customers alike.
It’s been a long and rewarding path since the days of brewing in an old shed in dad’s back yard.
In 2023 big accolades have come Bridge Road’s way. A top ten finish in the GABS Hottest 100 has cemented Beechworth Pale Ale as Australia’s favourite Victorian craft beer. Going one further, the annual Craft Beer Survey named Bridge Road the best Victorian brewery venue as well.
It’s a one-two punch that lays the perfect scene for their biggest development of the year, the springtime opening of a 350 seat brewhouse in East Brunswick.
In the High Country, and soon East Brunswick, Bridge Road Brewers continues to set the standard for Beer to Believe in.

GABS 2023 HOTTEST 100 AUSSIE CRAFT BEERS
Now in its 15th year, the GABS Hottest 100 Craft Beer people’s choice poll reveals the trends, brands and breweries shaping the local craft beer landscape with each voter set the very challenging task of selecting only their five favourite craft beers of the year.
Australia's long love affair with quality beer seems as strong as ever, this year there were an incredible 311 breweries in the poll and a whopping 2,140 different beers attracted votes! This set new records, with over 60,000 registering to vote, showing how the popularity of craft beer continues to grow. Even our PM, Anthony Albanese, jumped on board to let everybody know what his
The silver and bronze places on the podium went to two breweries who are both two-time previous champions, Mick Fanning’s, Gold Coast’s Balter XPA and Canberra’s much loved Bentspoke Crankshaft IPA.
Stone & Wood’s Pacific Ale, Sunshine Coast’s Your Mates Larry, Better Beer’s Zero Carb, Sydney favourite Young Henry’s Newtowner, Coopers Original Pale Ale, Bridge Roads Beechworth Pale Ale and Black Hops G.O.A.T rounded off the most closely contested TOP 10 in the history of the poll.
HOTTEST 100 AUSSIE CRAFT BEERS
Election campaigning this year was incredible with all breweries embracing the spirit of the Hottest 100 as a true celebration of craft beer and producing some of the most highly entertaining and brilliantly creative content. Political promises were ripped off, new rock songs created, and great fun had by all as they courted their fan bases. Not surprisingly, beer lovers spread their votes across their personal taste palate which resulted in a record equaling 58 breweries being represented on the Hottest 100 list.
There were impressive performances too from many small independent breweries that keep our beer
economy alive and employ so many young Australians. In the battle between the states, the blues knocked the maroons off the top perch as NSW set the bar with 28 spots to QLD’s 26. VIC took 18, WA 11, ACT 9 and SA 8.
The day was celebrated with over 80 official countdown parties with people celebrating and sharing a common love for craft beer.”
A huge thank you to all our sponsors of the GABS Hottest 100, First Choice Liquor Market, Dan Murphy’s, Vintage Cellars, BWS, Liquorland, Big Commerce and Klaviyo.
GABS 2023 BEERS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS
By GABS resident writer, Beer Diva Kirrily WaldhornWhen the GABS H100 kicked off back in 2008, there were less than 50 breweries in Australia and the beer scene was absolutely dominated by the big breweries. Today, of course, there are over 700 breweries and more beers than ever to choose from and vote for. The fascinating question is, how much has our style preference changed over the years? Do we still love the same styles we voted in our top 10 all those years ago or have our tastebuds evolved over time? Are there beer styles that have remained steadfast favourites and some that have completely fallen out of favour? We figured it was time to do a little crunching and get under the tastebuds of beer fans, past and present.
Let’s head right back to 2008 where it all began. The time when ugg boots, the Blackberry and Twilight were cooler than cool (so much change, so little time), and take a look at the beer styles we were showing our love for. Given one of the first forays into craft in Australia was Little Creatures Pale Ale, it’s no surprise that American Pale Ales were pretty popular back then, as were their Aussie counterparts. We were also starting to venture a little larger with the Double IPA making a showing along with an NZ-hopped lager and an Amber Ale. Further down the list, ESB’s (Extra Special Bitter), a Belgian Tripel and a couple of stouts demonstrated that we weren’t completely hop-obsessed, but also enjoy those more comforting malt driven styles.
2009 and the Double IPA was making its move up the rankings with a couple in the top 10, more American Pale Ale and the first of the darks with a Porter creeping in as well.
Another decade ticked over and we’re in the 2010’s, the era of YOLO, Jersey Shore (ugh),
planking and selfie sticks (double ugh) and with the turn of the decade, came a continuation for our love of all things Pale Ale and hops, with US and Aussie Pales dominating the chart. Anyone remember the wheat beers? These styles were incredibly refreshing and light, and probably the most polarising beer style of them all. Everyone had an opinion, you either loved them or hated them, there was no in-between. 2010 definitely found some love with a couple of wheat beers featuring in the top 20 but given the absence of them today, clearly the haters won that battle.
2011 was an interesting year in that beers #8-10 were all dark ales, with two Porters and a Black IPA on the list, though the list was still dominated by our all-time favourite ingredient, hops! Moving on to 2012, with those darks still hanging in there in the top 10 (four in fact), the German style Kölsch also made an appearance and for the first time, a sour beer, the Berliner Weisse hit the charts in the top 10. The sour revolution was in its infancy and perhaps even a little ahead of its time back then… or was it?
BEERS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS
2013 brought with it more hops, but this time in the shape of IPAs as our hop thresholds grew and we wanted more hops, more flavour, more intensity. We couldn’t get enough!! We were drinking bigger beers, with higher ABV’s, so much so that a Belgian Quad (coming in at a hefty 14.9% abv) also made the Top 10. Was this a sign of big things to come?
It was definitely the start of a foray into our love affair with IPA’s with nearly 50% of the top 20 beers being some form of IPA, be it American IPA, Double IPA or the newest kid on the block, the Imperial Red IPA, a beast of a beer style that combined the best of big hops, high alcohol and rich malts!
2015 was an interesting year… still hop dominated with a slight recalibration back to more traditional American & Australian Pale Ales but perhaps most interesting was the inclusion of three beers that were all mimicking popular food & drinks with Taco, Golden Stout Time and Milk & Three Sugars all finding favour in the Top 20. This was also around the time that GABS Festival beers really went all out as brewers pushed the boundaries between beer and food! 2016 feels like a bit of a turning point, back to more approachable beers, though still very hop-dominated with only one of the beers in the Top 20 not being some style of Pale Ale. This was also the year that the XPA (Extra Pale Ale) featured in the Top 20 for the first time, signaling that perhaps we had been defeated by those big, boozy hoppy numbers of the past, and this then continued on into 2017 with the XPA taking out the top position on the poll. What was also interesting in 2017 was the next faze to take hold of craft beer, the New England IPA, or NEIPA, or
the haze craze! Juicy, fruity and super-drinkable, there was nothing that was going to slow these juice-bombs down!
Tropical Pale Ale showed itself in 2018, more NEIPA’s and the continuing love affair with American & Australian Pales and IPA’s, which was pretty much replicated through 2019 and 2020. We are certainly a country of hop lovers it would seem!
Whilst our beer tastes were fairly consistent, life was anything but with the dreaded C word keeping us locked at home, socially distancing and getting our beers delivered straight to our front doors (maybe it wasn’t all that bad). Tik Tok exploded as housebound Gen Z’s got creative, Zoom was how we met both for work and socially and Netflix binging became our favourite pastime.
And finally 2021 and 2022 have brought perhaps the most diverse top 20 lists for some time and probably a great reflection of the need to stay stimulated whilst also the desire to be more grounded. Pale Ales, XPAs, Hazys and NEIPAs along with a Zero Carb/Zero Sugar and even a sour are all really supporting our foray back into easy-drinking, approachable and dare we say it, sessionable beer styles that feel exciting, if not a little reassuring and safe, which is exactly what we all need.
