user experience Keeping in mind our previous GadgetsLab reviews on the Tecno POVA 2 and CAMON 17 Pro, I had surmised that Tecno Mobile specialized only on gaming phones. So the PHANTOM X came as a surprise, particularly its outstanding camera performance. Boasting a 50MP rear camera, it is versatile in terms of camera settings, producing

accurate colors, especially in low light and night mode. I especially liked the AI CAM in the Camera app because it fixes the setting and makes sure that you have an amazing photo throughout the picture-taking process. In addition, the pictures need only minimal postprocessing. I also liked PHANTOM X’s front camera. It provides a nice selfie experience with its Beauty and Portrait camera setting. The selfie pictures have excellent detail as well as color accuracy. Aside from that, it also offers easy customizability through user-friendly camera and filter options. Phones that have many camera settings tend to overwhelm me, but this phone’s camera settings are easy-to-use, especially for the not-so tech-savvy. With regard to its gaming capabilities — its bread and butter — the PHANTOM X doesn’t disappoint. I tested the phone’s gaming capabilities through the latest release of Pokémon Unite. It worked seamlessly at the highest settings and had no issues whatsoever. Other games such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and League of Legends: Wild Rift were also able to run at the highest graphic settings.

I also played Genshin Impact — one of the most demanding games graphics-wise. Although it can only handle the game on Medium setting (30fps), it still performed well despite slight lag issues at the start of the game. One of the downsides of the phone is that it heats up when gaming. Although it has a nice liquid cooling system, sustained periods of gaming can definitely heat the phone unit easily. Also, the single speaker at the bottom part of the phone is a bit of a letdown, particularly since the speaker is actually of good quality. However, when playing games in landscape orientation, you can cover the speaker with your palm, which can be really disappointing as SFX adds so much depth to the overall gaming experience.

USER EXPERIENCE The Lenovo YOGA Slim 9i is one of the most premium laptops I have ever gotten my hands on. The leather back of the laptop, the aerospace aluminum, and the glass wrist panel and touchpad —all enhance the overall user experience. Thanks to its Intel Evo chipset and prolonged battery life, performing multiple tasks is effortlessly smooth and efficient. I used the YOGA Slim 9i for work, and it was fast and responsive through the many clicks, drags, and drops while resizing images. The touchscreen feature was great when I needed additional precision, such as in photo editing to erase a spot or heal an image. Although the screen can be pushed down flat to 180°, it’s not a feature I was able to appreciate as other YOGA models allow the touchscreen to be completely folded down to 360° to be used tablet-style with a stylus. Regarding video quality, I’m impressed that despite its relatively small 14-inch display, watching Watchmen (2009) with its heavy visual effects and the recent Korean TV hit Squid Game (2021) with its reliance on visuals and colors was still an incredible experience. Its Dolby Atmos speaker system also helped add depth to the cinematic experience. All in all, for me, the outstanding UHD display and the immersive speaker system are the best selling points of the YOGA Slim 9i. November 2021

Even as a long-time Fitbit user, the release of the new Fitbit Luxe was still cause for excitement. Finally, for the fashionista in me, here’s a fitness tracker that I can wear like a fashion accessory! Does it work as well as it looks?

design The Fitbit Luxe was designed, I believe, primarily to address requests for a less chunky, more stylish fitness tracker that could also double up as a fashion accessory. I recall ordering beaded replacement bracelets for my Fitbit Alta HR so it would match my dressy outfits. My girlfriends and I often lamented how trackers just aren’t suitable for certain special occasions. The introduction of the Fitbit Luxe with options like the gorjana Parker link, stainless steel mesh, and leather double wrap bracelets addresses these “girly” concerns. Size-wise, the Fitbit Luxe is slim and compact, being only 36.3mm(L) x 17.5mm(H) x 10.2mm(D). With a case made of surgical stainless steel and a flexible silicone band, it is light and comfortable for almost 24/7 use.

I see the Fitbit Luxe as a very worthy successor to the 2017 Fitbit Alta HR which I liked because of its slimmer and more “feminine” form as against the typical large square on wrist look of other trackers. If anything, the Fitbit Luxe is a refined version, packed with more features and functions.

It also offers phone notifications, and even forwards text messages, but since the screen is so tiny, it’s easier to just read the message on your phone than on your wrist. In relation to this, the Fitbit Luxe’s strength is also its weakness — I love that it’s so compact and sleek, but then that means compromising display size and the amount of information offered onscreen.

Due to the lockdowns, I haven’t had much occasion to leave the house and so haven’t felt the need to accessorize the standard Luxe band that came with the box. Looking at what’s on offer in the Fitbit Shop, though, it appears there are a number of options one can go with when things open up and it’s time to start glamorizing our OOTDs. Despite its pared down hardware, the Fitbit Luxe, particularly when paired with the Fitbit mobile app, delivers all the essentials expected of a fitness tracker. It offers 24/7 heart rate monitoring (which is important for me as I experience occasional arrhythmias), all day activity tracking, exercise stats, etc. I like wearing the Fitbit Luxe to bed so I can check my sleep score in the morning. On the app, it shows your sleep stages as well as your overall sleep quality. Additionally, it monitors your sleeping

Battery life is rated at up to 5 days, but even without the always-on screen function, I’m getting only about 3 days worth from each full-charge. I don’t think that’s a major issue, though, as the Fitbit mobile app contains all the necessary information through the dashboard. With a Fitbit Premium subscription, you get even more in-depth analysis of your health status.

What is the price of going green? It depends on the person you ask. For some, it’s expensive; for others a priceless necessity. For me, it’s the latter, especially since we are now in the worst climate crisis in our lifetime with no end in sight. Over the last few years, green products have gained prominence, so the Aspire Vero, the world’s first “Green” laptop made from recycled plastic, is an exciting proposition. Being eco-friendly is great and all, but how does it stack up against the current generation of laptops?

Having heard of eco-friendly tech, I have been excited about the Acer Aspire Vero since its launch. The Aspire Vero chassis is made from 30% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic. Despite the plastic material, it is solid, and the textured finish feels good to the touch. Opening the device, you’ll be greeted by the 15.6-inch FHD IPS display, which is 99% recyclable. The Aspire Vero touts a

full-sized backlit keyboard, though the Numpad looks cramped. The keycaps are also made from 50% PCR plastic with the R and E keys highlighted and mirrored to represent Acer’s RE concepts of “Review, Rethink, Recycle and Reduce.” Below the keyboard is the trackpad with the fingerprint reader. The engraved “Intel Core” and “Post Consumer Recycled” on the body is a great touch. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind seeing it more on other laptops rather than the usual Intel and Nvidia stickers. “Acer Aspire” is also engraved on the base of the Vero.

Port selection on the left side of the device includes the three-pin power adopter, an RJ45 ethernet port, HDMI, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, and a USB 3.2 Type C port. On the right are a Kensington lock, a USB 2.0 port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. You can also find the LED notification lights on the right of the device. Also worth mentioning is the Vero’s packaging, which is all-recyclable and re-usable. Even the charger box can be converted to a laptop stand with just a few folds.

hardware The Acer Aspire Vero has surprisingly impressive specifications. First, it runs on Intel Core i7-1195G7 with Iris Xe graphics, so you’re all set with this processor and graphics combo. For memory, the review unit had 16GB of RAM from 8GB of onboard DDR4 and another 8GB of dual-channel SODIMM DDR4 RAM. For storage, we had a 512GB NVMe SSD.

I have to give props to Acer’s decision to equip the Aspire Vero with regular screws on the base, so users can easily access the internals for future upgrades, whether to add more RAM or storage. In terms of benchmarks, the Aspire Vero performed surprisingly well. The Core i7-1195G7 scored 1563 points and 5746 points in single and multi-core in Cinebench R23. Geekbench pegged its CPU at 1611 for single-core and 5339 for multi-core. PCMark10 yielded a 5137 with 9494 in Essentials, 6909 in Productivity, and 5610 in Digital Content Creation. Lastly, it had 13 361 for 3DMark Night Raid, but only 1589 for 3DMark Time Spy and 3514 for 3DMark Fire Strike. In the spirit of forcing non-gaming laptops to game, I ran Valorant and Dota 2 on the Aspire Vero, and it did all right. I got 90 to 130 frames in Valorant on basic high settings and 40+ fps on Dota 2 in the highest settings as well.

user experience Before I move on to the laptop, I need to mention that the Aspire Vero is running on the new Windows 11 OS. It’s not that different from Windows 10, but the new Start Menu and screen UI did need some getting used to (as of all new things). But I have to commend Acer for having Windows 11 on the laptop instead of Windows 10. I know many people will be

trying to upgrade to the new OS when it comes out, and based on initial reviews, it isn’t as easy as downloading and restarting your PC.

Virtual conference calls were also decent on the laptop. Mic pickup was alright, and the built-in AI noise suppression did its job.

OS aside, the Acer Aspire Vero is great performance-wise. Working on the device was smooth and easy. The keyboard felt great to type on, though the Numpad could have been done without. The track was pretty good as well. The fingerprint reader was fast and accurate.

The Vero is a good enough laptop, allowing for some compromises. First, the display on Acer Aspire Vero is satisfactory but not something to write home about. But the thing that I found disappointing were the speakers. Maybe it’s the material or just a lack of better speaker hardware, but audio quality sounds a bit hollow and soft despite the max volume.

On the software side, the Acer VeroSense does a good job of regulating the laptop’s fan and energy consumption. There are four settings: Performance, Balance (which is what most people will need), Eco, and Eco + in case your battery needs some more juice. It must be noted that fan noise ramps up during Performance mode since fans will be running at top speed.

Lastly, there’s the heft. The Acer Aspire Vero weighs 1.8kg, not the heaviest laptop but not the lightest either. If you need to lug the device in your backpack the whole day, you might end up with a few body aches.

design Like other similar products, the realme TechLife Robot Vacuum is a disc, much like a flying saucer, particularly with the raised LiDAR unit protruding from the center of the upper surface. It is 350mm in diameter and 100mm high. On the upper surface, you will also find the Power and Home buttons. On the front side of the plastic casing are the sensors and a pressure-sensitive bumper, while at the back is the removable dust container.

On the underside are the fall sensors, the drive wheels, and a guide wheel, beside which are the charging contacts. Alongside these are the side brushes, while the large removable main brush is found across the center of the disc, slightly behind the drive wheels and adjoining the dust container.

user experience The TechLife Robot Vacuum is virtually plug-and-play. All you need to do is snap on the side brushes, check the filter, set up the charger, and you’re good. I was at first disappointed that it did not have a remote control and required me to download the realme Link app. Having done that, the app recognized the device almost immediately, and pairing and integrating the Robot Vacuum to my home WiFi was quick and easy. The app detected a firmware update so I waited for the process to go through, and it was cool that you could see the progress status on the app. At the same time, the Robot Vacuum also “told” me once it was completed. Yes, it’s smart and it gives verbal alerts in English.

For the first order of business, realme recommends that you first allow the TechLife Robot Vacuum to map your floor area. When I turned it on, I was surprised that it was able to quickly detect the walls of my living room. It then started moving around the edges, detecting obstacles and furniture. Once it had established the boundaries, it then started moving back and forth across the open surfaces, going over these areas and picking up debris.

Overall, I think the TechLife Robot Vacuum is great for quick daily maintenance cleanups just to keep floor surfaces dust-free. It’s also great for going under beds and low furniture, areas that normally don’t get regular cleaning. It’s not a replacement for regular handheld vacuum cleaners with all the brushes and extensions. Instead, I think of it as a daily sweeper (and mop once it becomes available) in between more thorough floor-to-ceiling house cleaning sessions.

VALUE The TechLife Robot Vacuum has an SRP of PHP16,990, pricier than other robot vacuums now available in the market. However, the higher sticker price could be justified with its smarter, more advanced features. Plus, since this is something

The holiday rush is the busiest time of the year for many shops as, after all, it’s the season of giving and, of course, selling gifts. Unfortunately, we may need to wait another year to return to our normal holiday shopping traditions as the pandemic continues (albeit much slower) to spread. As we experience another abnormal shopping season, here are some ways you, as a seller, can make the most of the new shopping normal.

The holiday season is still the biggest buying season for the year. But unlike previous years, the new normal presents new challenges. Supply chains are backed up in countries such as the US, mainly due to pandemic lay-offs and retirements. These backlogs have clogged up supplies of many products shipped from China and other countries. Thankfully, no such backlog has been reported in the Philippines, but it pays to be prepared, just in case. As COVID-19 restrictions are lowered in time for holiday shopping, be sure you have enough inventory on hand for the influx of orders. It would be wise to stock up early as now to avoid backlogs later. However, stocking up is not a clear-cut process. Obviously, you must study your customers’ buying habits. Carrying extra reserves of bestsellers is one way to prevent any possible backlogs. As for the rarely bought items, your usual supply might be enough to get you through the rush. Experts also suggest now is the right time to handle staffing issues like hiring additional help for the Holiday season and managing or scheduling leaves to prevent any understaffed dates when the Christmas rush does begin.

Believe it or not, New World is not Amazon’s first attempt at developing and publishing a game. Their foray into gaming started back in 2014. New World was announced at TwitchCon 2016, and the game came out on September 28, 2021. Its approach to MMORPGs is similar to that of its competition, with one major exception: no auto-locked targeting attacks. This forces you to aim your attacks at enemies, which can prove easy for those used to action-adventure games or firstperson shooters, but difficult for those who mainly play just MMORPGs. New World takes place in an area resembling 17th-century America, with players exploring Aeternum Island. The island is full of mysterious corruption, so one must build a civilization out here to survive. Completing quests, participating in PvP battles, gathering, and crafting are part of what it takes to survive in New World. You can join one of three factions: the Covenant, Marauders, or the Syndicate. It all depends on who you want to be. You can also join a company and conquer cities and territories. Character creation is relatively simple in appearance, but this doesn’t matter as you progress further into the game. You can choose from a variety of weapons, including one-handed swords, rapiers, and hatchets; two-handed weapons such as spears, great axes, and war hammers; ranged weapons such as bows and muskets; and magic weapons such as fire staffs, life staffs, and ice gauntlets. You can level each weapon to level 20 and unlock unique abilities. There are talent trees for each weapon as well, allowing you to further customize your playstyle.

Like other MMORPGs, there is gear that you can equip to increase your stats. These stats are Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Focus, and Constitution. Every time you level up, you get three stat points to allocate. You’ll also gain experience no matter what you do — whether it be crafting, gathering, killing enemies, exploring new areas, and more. You can also level your reputation in a zone — you can get perks such as increased gathering speed, more experience, more storage, and even the ability to buy player housing. Crafting is very complex and requires you to gather a variety of materials. Gathering is very straightforward, but you only have a certain amount of bag space. If you exceed your bag space, you become encumbered, which means you can only do your basic attack and your movement speed is significantly reduced. You will also need a certain amount of gold to craft. One of the perks of the faction system is that you can set taxes and fees in each territory you conquer. There are property taxes, trading taxes, crafting fees, and refining fees. You can also undergo town missions and upgrades, allowing you to upgrade (or downgrade) certain services in certain territories. Since territories can rapidly shift allegiances due to the emphasis on PvP events, New World definitely makes you plan your next moves carefully. If you’re in a large active company, you have many advantages over a smaller company. The company can set the taxes, allowing them to generate revenue to make upgrades in the town, but with constant shifts in territorial claims, these rates are not absolute.

So, how does this work? An acoustic piezo sensor has been integrated into the vacuum. Carbon fiber filaments in the cleaner head pick up microscopic particles, which are sized and counted up to 15,000 times a second. The dust enters the vacuum and hits the acoustic piezo sensor within the bin inlet, with the tiny vibrations being converted to electrical signals. iPad and iPad Mini After the release of the new and updated iPad Pro last April, Apple announced the newest version of the iPad and iPad Mini in their September 14 event. The new 10.2-inch iPad will have an A13 Bionic chip, which delivers a performance boost over previous iPads. With a faster chipset, the new iPad will have faster signal processing for photos and videos. An improved 12-megapixel front-facing camera makes it ideal for online learning. It now offers larger storage, starting at 64GB. The new iPad is available in Space Gray (black variant) and Silver.

The new iPad Mini has a completely new landscape-oriented design, with the front-facing camera and speakers now positioned landscape mode. Sophos, a global leader in next-generation cybersecurity, has recently released new insight on an international cryptocurrency trading scam targeting iPhone users through popular dating apps, such as Bumble and Tinder. A report detailing the latest findings, CryptoRom Fake iOS Cryptocurrency Apps Hit US, European Victims For At Least $1.4 Million, shows that the operation has escalated. The attackers have expanded from targeting people in Asia to include people in the U.S. and Europe. Sophos has uncovered a Bitcoin wallet controlled by the attackers that contains nearly $1.4 million in cryptocurrency, allegedly collected from victims. Sophos researchers have code-named the threat “CryptoRom.”

“The CryptoRom scam relies heavily on social engineering at almost every stage,” said Jagadeesh Chandraiah, senior threat researcher at Sophos. “First, the attackers post convincing fake profiles on legitimate dating sites. Once they’ve made contact with a target, the attackers suggest continuing the conversation on a messaging platform. They then try to persuade the target to install and invest in a fake cryptocurrency trading app. At first, the returns look very good but if the victim asks for their money back or tries to access the funds, they are refused, and the money is lost. Our research shows that the attackers are making millions of dollars with this scam.”

Double Trouble In addition to stealing money, the attackers can also gain access to victims’ iPhones, according to Sophos’ research. In this version of the attack, cybercriminals leverage Enterprise Signature, a system for software developers that helps organizations to pre-test new iOS applications with selected iPhone users before they submit them to the official Apple App Store for review and approval. With the functionality of the Enterprise Signature system, attackers can target larger groups of iPhone users with their fake cryptotrading apps and gain remote management control over their devices. This means the attackers could potentially do more than just steal cryptocurrency investments from victims. They could also, for instance, collect personal data, add and remove accounts, and install and manage apps for other malicious purposes.

Virtual, one-sided relationships to cope with the pandemic One-sided relationships, also known as “parasocial relationships”, are blossoming worldwide and in Southeast Asia (SEA) amid social distancing and continuing national Covid-19 lockdowns. A global study of more than 15,000 people in 25 countries from security firm Kaspersky finds that just under half (47%) of social media users believe the influencers they follow provide them with “an escape from reality”. The numbers are relatively higher in SEA, the region first hit by the pandemic beyond China back in 2020. For instance, more than three in five (61%) of the Southeast Asian respondents admitted that influencers help them to forget and to escape their realities. Globally, a tad over one in five (21%) believes they “could be friends” with influencers they follow, with SEA data two digits higher than the global average at 31%. In addition, 22% of the global respondents have gone as far as sending a private message November 2021

to an influencer. Despite the largely virtual nature of these relationships, more than a third (34%) of social media users have even met some of the influencers that they follow in real life, rising to 56% in SEA region.

During successive global lockdowns, many have spent long periods at home and are turning to virtual companions to replace the lost social lives. This type of one-sided relationship has a strong pull over many.

77% say that they learn from the influencers they follow in areas such as health, hobbies, style and news. 55% also revealed that following famous entities online offers them a relationship they do not have with anyone else. Nearly half (44%) say they are “dependent” on influencer content and 17% even say they feel a sense 110

of absence if they do not engage with influencers. While one-sided relationships do exist, social media users in SEA also acted on getting in touch with the influencers they follow. Many have sought out direct contact most commonly via commenting on influencers’ posts (46%) or reacting to their posts or stories (39%). Loyal fans as they are, social media users here also interacted with influencers in various ways like attending the events they have hosted (19%), sending fan-art (16%), messaging privately (15%), getting in touch through private messages (15%), emails (15%) and even calling the influencers or their agents directly (12%). Clearly, social media has been important for many people during the pandemic, with nearly six in 10 (59%) worldwide saying social media has provided a vital connection for them during the pandemic. “It is understandable with the lockdowns we’ve all experienced over the past year that people will have gravitated towards online and parasocial relationships to stave off loneliness and boredom, but it’s crucial that people are aware of the consequences of oversharing online and are able to take a more balanced approach,” says Emm. This is what Paul Bryan Mancenido, an electrical engineering senior from the Technological Institute of the Philippines (T.I.P.), proved with his 4-in-1 rechargeable emergency kit built from scraps.

As an only child, Mancenido grew up playing and experimenting with broken motor parts. His father is an air-conditioning mechanic, while his mother is a housewife. When he was younger, he would often repair devices for free. This hobby would continue on up to college, when Mancenido realized that he wanted to build a career and a legacy out of it.

The device – which won him the grand prize in T.I.P.’s Environmental Fair, and which recently caught the attention of media giant GMA 7 – features a handy flashlight, lamp, electric fan, and USB charging port all rolled into one.

“People would belittle my ideas sometimes, and even my parents would caution me every now and then; but I know in my heart that I’ve got something to give. They may not understand it now; but someday, when I’m already a full-fledged manufacturing engineer, they will,” Mancenido said.

“My mantra has always been not to let go of scrap materials just yet. They can still be reused and recycled, especially now when we can’t easily go out due to the pandemic,” Mancenido said, recalling that November 2021

that “breakthroughs doesn’t necessarily mean discovering new things, it may also be about looking at improving those around us.”

The thought of contributing largely to society did not sink in until Mancenido himself saw his work on national television. Congratulations were immediately in order for the humble student from San Mateo, Rizal. Years of failures and self-conceptualizing have somehow bore fruit, and this is just the beginning. The kid is only getting started.

“Mr. Marcenido’s project would definitely open up other bright ideas from our students and other young inventors out there. This would encourage them to explore integration of various concepts and technology – things that are already on hand but just waiting to be tapped and reproduced into innovative tools, gadgets, or equipment,” he added.

As he nears graduation, Mancenido looks back on his journey as a T.I.P.ian. It was the institute’s laboratories that inspired him to dream, and it’s also how he envisions his future workspace to be.

rowing up, I witnessed the heyday of Sears. You could buy practically anything at Sears, making it also an ideal place to purchase Christmas presents. Clothes, electronics, furniture, appliances, and more were available at Sears, and it was almost always packed during the holiday season. Today, we do most (if not all) of our shopping online, but Sears was one of the most successful retailers in United States history. Often compared to Amazon and called the predecessor to Amazon, Sears used the mail order catalog to revolutionize the retail industry throughout the 20th century. Richard Warren Sears (1863-1914) started Sears as a mail-order watch business

in 1886, calling it the R.W. Sears Watch Company. He then met Alvah C. Roebuck, who repaired watches. This naturally made Sears and Roebuck ideal business partners, as they could both sell watches and repair them. By 1887, they relocated to Chicago and published the first mailorder catalog offering watches, diamonds, and jewelry. Sears then sold the business for USD100,000 (USD2.9 million in 2021) and moved to Iowa. He later returned to Chicago in 1892 to sell watches again with Roebuck. By 1893, they renamed the company to Sears, Roebuck, and Co., widening product offerings. In smaller rural towns, farmers had to purchase supplies on credit and at high prices from local

general stores, which had limited stock. The prices also had to be negotiated, and the storekeeper had to judge the customer’s creditworthiness. Sears published catalogs to sell to these small companies with products at fixed prices. The Panic of 1893, which caused a recession, directly affected Sears, but the catalog continued to grow to 322 pages in 1894. By 1895, the catalog was over 500 pages and generating USD750,000 (USD23.3 million in 2021). Sears even added dolls, stoves, and groceries to the catalog by 1896. The rapid growth of Sears also caused rapid diversification of its product lines: by the early 1900s, one could also buy hardware, furniture, and anything else for the early 20th century household.

By 1906, Sears went public with a stock placement of USD40 million (USD1.2 billion in 2021). Sears was also the first major retail initial public offering (IPO) in American history, bringing the consumer sector to life in the United States. It was on the Dow Jones Industrial Average from 1924 to 1999. Another highlight of the 1900s was the Sears Merchandise Building Tower on Chicago’s West Side, where the company would be located until the completion of the Sears Tower in 1973. Sears himself left the company in 1908 due to poor health, and had Julius Rosenwald take over the company. A number of acquisitions led Sears to boom during the 1910s, most notably acquiring the David Bradley Plow Company, which manufactured mowers, chainsaws, and tillers. Another recession from 1919 to 1921 hurt the company, but Rosenwald pledged USD21 million (USD300 million in 2021) to keep the company solvent, and by 1922 Sears had regained financial stability. Rosenwald saw opportunity in the rapidly urbanizing American market, and thus shifted from mail-order catalogs to retail stores. The first retail store opened in 1925. Robert E. Wood (a veteran of the Philippine-American War) was named vice-president to oversee this transformation. He placed Sears stores in the suburbs (as opposed to downtown shopping districts) which attracted lower-middle class and working-class customers. It was a store that catered to both men and women, and Sears even created the Sears Wishbook in 1933 which had toys and gifts to buy for Christmas. You could even build your own houses, as Sears had kit houses from 1908-1940. Around the same time, the Sears catalog became known as “The Consumers’ Bible”. The expansion of Sears into malls and creation of well-known American brands such as Allstate, Kenmore, and Craftsman made Sears bigger than ever. In 1974, Sears moved into the Sears Tower (now Willis Tower), which became the world’s tallest building from 1974 to around 1998. In the 1980s, Sears launched its own credit card, Discover, and partnered with IBM to launch the early Internet service provider (ISP) Prodigy in 1984.

Time caught up to Sears, as it started divesting itself of many of its non-retail entities in the 1990s and 2000s. The catalog was discontinued in 1993, and some say that had Sears shifted to the Internet sooner, it would still be around today. In 2004, Kmart acquired Sears for USD11 billion. The company ceased being profitable by 2010 and had become bankrupt in 2018. The company survives

today (controversially) thanks to current CEO Eddie Lampert, although the time is still ticking on the once-massive retailer. Before you buy online, remember that Sears was once one of the biggest retailers in history, and that its catalog was the precursor to what online retailers such as Amazon have to offer today.
