Technological innovations in recent years have given us a glimpse of what’s on the horizon of humanity’s future. The rapid rise in technology in just the last couple of years has shown us how quickly the future can change with just a single innovation.

The Rise of Language Models Changing AI Perception

An innovation that caught the world by surprise last year was the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT-3. ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that utilizes the opensource Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) Natural Language Processing model. Basically, it is a chatbot that utilizes machine learning to understand what is being asked and provide the necessary answer based on what it was trained on.

Chatbots utilizing machine learning are not entirely new. If you open the social media pages of some of your favorite brands, you will find chatbots ready to answer your

every query. However, there are limitations, as standard chatboxes cannot process complex requests they were not trained on.

ChatGPT and other Advance Language Models (like Bard, Bing, etc.) are different. Whereas most common chatbots are pretrain on a limited data set, these larger models are trained on a larger scale, usually utilizing the vast database of the whole internet. They are also capable of understanding more nuanced sentence structures and grammar, even contextualizing the whole conversation. They are able to answer questions beyond their

initial programming. They’re also able to continuously learn from these queries, constantly refining their responses to suit the user’s needs.

These new AI models will change the way we interact with AI, even beyond their current use. The advanced language models will play a massive impact on customer service and support, education, entertainment, and even research. Their capability to analyze massive amounts of data and ease of tailor-fitting these to a user’s needs makes it a clear viable partner in data and information gathering.

The Race for a Room Temperature Super-Conductor

During the last week of July 2023, social media was abuzz — and, no, it wasn’t about entertainment gossip, nor was it a call out to some political shenanigan. Of all things, the people on X (formerly Twitter) as well as other forums were raving about a scientific paper posted on arXiv, an open-access website that collates scholarly but not yet peer-reviewed papers.

That particular week, researchers from South Korea uploaded a paper claiming that they have successfully created a superconductor that could run on ambient temperature and ambient pressure. To understand why this is a big deal not just for physics but for humanity itself, here’s a brief science lesson.

Our whole world revolves around electricity, which comes from the movement of electrons through space. We harness electricity to generate power, create magnets, and many more. However, our current usage of electricity is not flawless, particularly because there are some energy losses due to the electrical resistance of materials.

Superconductors are the exception, since they are materials that have zero electrical resistance. Superconductors have no electrical loss, making them ideal materials for energy transportation. They don’t produce heat either, enabling them to handle larger currents. The only major downside of superconductors is that they can only achieve superconductivity at extremely low temperatures — colder than negative 200-degrees Celsius, to be exact. This means that superconductors are extremely costly to use and maintain.

Scientists are in a race to discover hightemperature superconductors as these will revolutionize the whole world. High-temperature in this case, is negative 100 degrees — still a tough temperature to maintain.

This is where the South Korean discovery comes in. If the paper is verified by other scientists, we may see a whole new world. Imagine having a computer or phone that doesn’t heat up, or 100% energy transmission on our power grids. MagLev trains would also be easier to create and design.

That said, weeks after the initial discovery, other physicists and scientists are struggling to replicate the South Korean experiment, leading many to determine that it was a hoax produced by cherry-picking data. But the dream of an ambient temperature superconductor is not yet dead. Scientists are constantly discovering compounds that have higher and higher temperature superconductivity and, who knows? Maybe in just the next few years we’ll truly discover one that works at ambient temperature.

Emergency Satellite Communication — From Safety to Truly Global Connectivity

Last year, Apple announced that it was implementing Emergency SOS via satellite on its newest generation of iPhones (iPhone 14-series). Some months later, Qualcomm also announced that it was bringing emergency satellite services to its flagship processor starting in 2023.

Using satellites for emergency communication is not a brand-new innovation. In fact, it has been in use since the 1960s. Initially started by the US military for its own emergency responses, the service had grown significantly by the late 1990s, with several private companies offering their services.

Prior to Apple’s implementation, calling for emergency satellite services faced hardware limitations and was, thus, confined to special use case scenarios. Using satellite communication meant using a dedicated and bulky satellite

phone, and was more expensive compared to regular mobile phones.

The arrival of satellite communication in regular smartphones would drastically change emergency response and safety. Currently, smartphones can only communicate via the GSM and LTE frequency bands, or mobile communication bands. Beyond the current bands, it can also connect to the internet via WiFi or through mobile communication bands (i.e. LTE, 5G). Because of their reliance on mobile communication bands, areas without coverage are left to fend for themselves, especially during emergency situations.

As satellite communications start to trickle to more consumer products, we may soon see a new, more efficient way of communication, more accurate emergency response, and finally a much more connected world.

ASUS VIVOBOOK 15X OLED (K3504)

I’ve reviewed most of ASUS’ new Vivobook lineup in the last year. From the small and compact Vivobook Pro 14 OLED to the bigger Vivobook Pro 15 OLED. I still maintain that those two are some of the best bang-for-the-buck laptops you can get. Now, not only am I trying out the non-pro version, but this is also the first Intel variant loaned to us for a review, so how does the ASUS Vivobook 15X OLED (K3504) place among its siblings?

The ASUS Vivobook 15X OLED shares most of its design with the ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 OLED. It has the same metallic black cover and plastic chassis. As ASUS made the Vivobook design a bit more

uniform, you’ll immediately notice the same Vivobook logo design on the lid and the Vivobook aesthetic on the enter key.

It has a 15.6-inch 2.8K (2880 x 1620) OLED display with a 120Hz screen refresh rate. As an ASUS OLED display, it has a 100% DCI-P3 color gamut as well as

VESA DisplayHDR 500 and Pantonevalidated display perfect for graphicsensitive works. The display also has TUV Rheinland certification for low blue light, guaranteeing a much safer and still vivid viewing experience.

Like its siblings, the Vivobook 15X OLED is loaded with ports. On the left side of the laptop is a USB 2.0 Type-A port, as well as LED indicators. On the right side are the DC-in port, the HDMI, two USB 3.2 type-A ports, a USB 3.2 Type-C port with power delivery, and finally the 3.5mm combo audio jack. Meanwhile, on top of the 15.6-inch display is the 720p 3DNR webcam with ASUS’ webcam shield.

When you remove the laptop from its box, you’ll immediately notice how light and thin it is. Despite being a 15-inch laptop, the Vivobook 15X is surprisingly light, coming in at just 1.6kg, 0.2kg lighter than the Vivobook Pro 15 OLED I previously reviewed. It is also a bit thinner, coming in at just 17.9mm.

HARDWARE

The ASUS Vivobook 15X OLED (K3504) is powered by an Intel Core i7-1255U processor. The Vivobook 15X has 10 total cores (2-power cores and 8 efficiency cores) with 12 threads. It can reach as high as 4.70GHz. Essentially this is one powerful yet power-efficient device. On the graphics side, there’s not much, as the laptop runs on Intel’s UHD graphics. Our unit also had 500GB of NVMe SSD storage, as well as 8GB of DDR4 RAM though ASUS is also offering a 16GB variants.

For benchmarks, PCMark 10 has it at 4883 for overall performance, with 9130 for essentials and 6462 for productivity. Cinebench R23 has it at 5772 pts for multi-core and 1557 for single-core. Geekbench 6 meanwhile gauged the laptop with a score of 2129 for single-core and 5040 for multi-core performance. Finally, on the graphics side, 3DMark Night Raid scored it 9258 and Cinebench R23.

What we can take out of the benchmarks is that the Intel Core i7-1255U is a beast for single-core performance outperforming the Ryzen 5800H on the Vivobook Pro 15 OLED. However, it does come short for multi-core performance but not by a lot.

In real-world testing, the ASUS Vivobook 15X performed really well as an on-the-go workhorse. The core i7-1255U is power efficient compared to the bigger Pro models. While the Vivobook Pro 14 OLED and Pro 15 OLED lasted me around 6-7 hours, the Vivobook 15X OLED lasted a similar time despite the smaller 50Whr battery. ASUS has also provided a fast-charging capability with the Vivobook 15X OLED able to top up from 0% up to 60% in just under an hour. If you don’t want to carry the power brick, you can juice up using your phone charger (USB Type-C) or with a Power delivery enabled power bank.

USER EXPERIENCE

What makes the ASUS Vivobook 15X OLED stand out is its portability. There are just a few laptops on the market that offer a large 15.6-inch display with a thin and light body. Most of these laptops are also in the premium price range.

Even though it’s thin and light, the performance does not take a hit. The Core i7-1255U is more than good for most everyday tasks. It can also handle a bit of light graphic work, like a bit of video editing and Photoshop. It can also handle light gaming, especially on esports titles like League of Legends and Valorant. Its thermals are also some of the best I’ve experienced, with the device never reaching dangerously warm temperatures during benchmarks and stress tests.

Like the ASUS Vivobook Pro 14/ 15 OLED, the Vivobook 15X is a workhorse. Its portability was a godsend since I was on the go for most of the week I had it with me. Most other 15.6-inch

laptop weigh at least 1.8kg, and while 0.2kg does not seem much, it does add up on your daily commute. Plus, the bigger display allowed me to do more than my current personal laptop, which is a 14-inch model.

Where the laptop shines, though, is during media consumption. The OLED display is simply stellar for Netflix binge-watching, and speakers equally complement it. There’s DIRAC Audio software preinstalled which allows for the personalized of the laptops sounds through an equalizer.

ASUS has also equipped the ErgoSense keyboard on the Vivobook 15X OLED with their ASUS Antibacterial Guard coating. According to ASUS, the silver ion coating on the keyboard inhibits 99% bacterial growth over a 24-hr period. This means there should be less bacterial buildup on the laptop’s surface as you continuously use it. This technology passed the ISO 22196 test for bacterial activity, giving me a bit more peace of mind when using the laptop.

Another notable thing about ASUS’ laptops, including the Vivobook-series, is military-grade durability. Each laptop undergoes 12 different military-grade test methods of which are 26 different test procedures. Some of these include vibration tests, extreme temperature tests, and drop (shock) tests. Knowing that these

laptops were essentially pushed to the limits before being green-lit to the market gives me more confidence in bringing the laptop anywhere without worrying if it will break.

If anything does go wrong, ASUS is offering two years of international warranty, the first year of which includes ASUS’ Platinum Protection Warranty which covers physicals damages to the laptop. Platinum Protection Warranty also covers 100% of the labor cause and even 80% of the placement parts costs.

If there’s one thing that I would have liked better is the option of having a model with a dedicated graphics card. Having a dedicated graphic within the Vivobook 15X would make this my top recommendation for those looing for a great budget-friendly laptop for serious content creation.

VALUE

Starting at PHP 49,995 for the Core i5 variant, the ASUS Vivobook 15X is once again a compelling device to look at. Our unit would set you back PHP 55,995. For that price, no laptop comes close to its portability, processor performance, and finally great display. ASUS continues to impress me with what they’re doing with their mid-range laptops.

The problem with midrange phones is most of the time, manufacturers have to sacrifice something—whether that be build quality, performance, imaging, battery life, RAM, storage space, or display—in order to take the price tag down. The HONOR 90 5G on paper seems to buck this trend, bringing with it a whole slew of design and hardware choices that make it hard to ignore. Is the HONOR 90 5G everything it’s hyped up to be? Let’s find out.

I found our HONOR 90 5G review unit in a Midnight Black finish to be quite a premium looker despite its minimalist aesthetics. The glossy back is protected by a glass-like material. If you prefer handling your phone bare, you will have to quickly wipe it every now and then to keep it looking fresh. Otherwise, HONOR included a transparent jelly case out of the box.

Still at the back, there’s a silver “HONOR” marking along the bottom left edge while the imaging modules sit stacked by the upper left. From the top, these are the depth sensor, the main camera, the wide camera, and the flash. A silver “AI

Matrix” branding text sits by the bottom of the shooters. What I particularly like about the Midnight Black colorway is that the camera bumps and some obligatory regulatory texts by the bottom right edge disappear into the phone making it look sleek and clean. In other colorways— Diamond Silver, Peacock Blue, Emerald Green—these are more prominent.

Flip the phone over and you’ll be greeted by the almost edge-to-edge 6.7-inch 2664x1200 px AMOLED display with Always-On capability, 120Hz refresh rate, TÜV Rheinland Flicker Free Certification, 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness, in-display fingerprint scanner, and punch hole front camera. The screen is curved along the edges making the screen appear to float.

The volume rockers and power button sit along the right edge. The top edge has a microphone pinhole on the right. The bottom edge has the SIM tray for up to two nano SIMs, USB-C port, another microphone pinhole, and the speaker grille. The left edge is bare.

Overall, the HONOR 90 5G looks premium and feels great in the hand with its solid build.

HARDWARE

Running the HONOR 90 5G is an octacore 5G-enabled Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Accelerated Edition processor which clocks up to a higher 2.52 GHz versus the typical 2.4 GHz of non-

Accelerated chipset variants. Released to the market in Q2 of 2022, this 4nm chip was designed for premium mid-range devices and is marketed as being 20 percent faster in graphics rendering than the previous generation Snapdragon 778. It is paired with an Adreno 644 GPU and very plentiful 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage. Seeing as the phone does not take microSD cards, the hefty storage option is more than welcome.

As mentioned previously, the screen of the HONOR 90 5G has a 120Hz refresh rate which should result in silky smooth scrolling performance. Color quality should also be great with its support for 1.07-billion colors, 100% DCI-P3 color space, and HDR10+ Certification.

While these already make for a great display, the cherry on top is the industry-leading 3,840Hz PWM screen dimming technology that earned it TÜV Rheinland Flicker Free Certification. What are the advantages of this flickerfree display, you ask? It means your eyes won’t be too fatigued when you’re glued to the screen for hours on end. This is especially important if your screen is at low brightness levels. In addition to the performance and display, HONOR is also banking on the HONOR 90 5G’s shooters for its marketing, and for good reason. The star of the show imaging-wise is the 200MP f/1.9 main camera. The megapixels mean nothing without a decent image sensor and luckily, the HONOR 90 5G offers a sizeable 1/1.4-inch sensor to let in plenty of light. Sure, it’s not the biggest sensor out there but at this price point, it’s hard to find something bigger. Better still, it’s supported by a 12MP f/2.2 ultrawide and macro camera and 2MP f/2.4 depth camera to cover various use-case scenarios, from landscape to portrait mobile photography.

Lastly, the phone ships with a 66W fast charging brick out of the box which is claimed to be able to top up 20% of its

sizeable 5000mAh battery pack in just five minutes. The phone is also capable of reverse charging your other devices on the go.

While everything seems great with the HONOR 90 5G, I did miss having a headphone jack which is my only gripe hardware-wise.

USER EXPERIENCE

The HONOR 90 5G’s marketing heavily emphasized the display and its imaging performance, so we’ll start with these two.

The display is as good in real life as it is on paper. The large screen makes it a joy to binge-watch online videos, with colors coming out nicely crisp, bright, and vibrant even outdoors. The 120Hz refresh rate and powerful processor made the phone feel very responsive to touch inputs and scrolling around was silky smooth. In terms of the flicker-free display, I did notice that my eyes felt less strained when I doom-scrolled until the wee hours of the morning with the HONOR 90 5G versus my personal phone, although I don’t know if it’s just a placebo. Still, screen flicker will take its toll on our vision over time, and it’s nice to know that HONOR is taking steps to reduce long-term damage to our eyes.

The camera likewise performs as advertised. Thanks to the 1/1.4-inch sensor and f/1.9 aperture, the HONOR 90 5G is able to produce admirable photos across a wide variety of lighting scenarios. Outdoor and well-lit environments expectedly resulted in great-looking photos with bright and punchy colors.

Autofocus speed was decent, and dynamic range was reasonably wide. In dimmer environments, the quality drops off a little and noise starts to creep in, but images are still more than good enough for curated Instagram feeds. The wide-angle camera also performs quite decently but is visibly grainy in low light and without the dynamic range of its bigger brother. Still, its macro outputs are quite good.

Due to the July rains, I wasn’t able to take too much videos, but what I can say is that captured footage also looks great and can go up to 4K resolution at 30fps. Video mode has a built-in noise reducer which works surprisingly well at eliminating ambient noise when vlogging.

The large sensor is able to let in enough light even in dimly lit environments.

For the camera app, there is a bit of shutter lag between shots. While it’s not annoying, I find it interesting because it doesn’t seem to over-process photos if at all. Colors come out naturally which is great for those who prefer color-editing their photos manually. The camera also contains shortcuts to some noteworthy options, especially a digital 2x zoom and a Hi-Res mode. The latter takes full advantage of the 200MP camera and opens up very flexible cropping options for shots in exchange for file sizes that can be multiple times larger than normal. Good thing storage is at 512GB, eh?

Moving onto gaming and everyday use. The HONOR 90 5G is very snappy, which is to be expected with the processor. It scored 11,889 in the PCMark Work 3.0 Performance test and 3,083 in the 3DMark Wild Life test. Playing Call of Duty Mobile, NBA 2K, Mobile Legends, and Asphalt 9 all at the highest graphics preset yielded steady frame rates of 60fps. The phone also doesn’t heat up too uncomfortably, whether when gaming or video recording. I used it as a dash cam on a two-hour drive and it was just a tiny bit warm to the touch. On the topic of being comfortable in-hand, the curved edges make the phone easier to grip and it didn’t hurt the flesh between my thumb and index even during long periods of gaming and scrolling.

Finally, let’s talk about the battery. The HONOR 90 5G can easily last a whole

day of heavy use as it clocked in at 10 hours 56 minutes in the PCMark Work 3.0 Battery Life test, which runs the phone non-stop from 100% to 20% juice. Charging in my experience wasn’t as quick as advertised but was still fast, taking 15 minutes to charge 30% of the battery and just under an hour to completely charge it to 100%. If you need to squeeze every last bit of battery out of the phone, you can manually lower the screen resolution and refresh rate down to 1998 x 900 px and 60Hz, respectively.

VALUE

The particular variant of the HONOR 90 5G we reviewed retails at PHP 24,990. Arguments can be made that you can get a faster phone at a lower price which is true. However, it’s hard to find a phone which does so well across the board—build quality, performance, imaging, battery life, RAM, storage space, and display—like the HONOR 90 5G. It’s something that I would highly recommend if you want a premium experience at only an upper mid-range price tag.

HP PROBOOK 440 G9

Business-centric laptops are not among the top choices when shopping for a laptop. But I would argue that it should be. After all, they offer some of the best security at a level not found on most mainstream laptops—case in point, the HP ProBook 440 G9, HP’s affordable business-centric laptop.

DESIGN

The HP ProBook 440 G9 is a sleek and elegant laptop with a silver aluminum body.

It has a 14-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS display that does not claim a fast refresh rate nor specialized color gamut calibration. Is this a bad thing? Honestly, I don’t believe so. For the target audience of the ProBook series, having faster frame rates and all the color gamut are just goodto-have features but not necessary. My only issue with the display is that I felt it needed a bit of vibrancy since it was a bit too dull for my taste.

The port selection is outstanding on the HP ProBook 440 G9. On the left, you’ll find a Kensington Lock, a full RJ45 Ethernet port, and a USB 3.2 Type-A port. On the right are two more USB 3.2 Type-A ports, a USB 3.2 (Gen 2) Type-C Port, the audio jack, a full HDMI (2.1) port, and the power port. There is also another slot for the optional sim card tray.

Where the HP ProBook 440 G9 really shines is its portability. The laptop is just 1.38kg. For comparison, one of the lightest mainstream options, the Apple MacBook Air is just .08kg lighter. For thickness, the HP ProBook comes in at 19.9mm thin, not the thinnest but still quite portable.

HARDWARE

At the heart of the HP ProBook 440 G9 is either an Intel Core i5–1235U or an Intel Core i7-1255U. Both variants are also paired with either an Intel UHD Graphics or Intel Iris Xe graphics. Our review unit was the Core i7-1255U variant mated to Intel UHD graphics, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of NVMe SSD as storage.

Benchmarks indicate that the HP ProBook 440 G9 is a fairly good device. The core i7-processor earned 1557 points for single-core performance at Cinebench R23 and 5157 points for multi-core. It scored 2043 for single-core performance in Geekbench 6 and 6147 for multi-core. Finally, it earned 4797 in PCMark 10 with 8943 for essentials. The integrated Intel UHD graphic is not meant for gaming, but still earned a decent 1179 total points in 3Dmark Time Spy, and 10359 for Night Raid. Overall I would say these metrics are more than sufficient for everyday office work.

The Intel Core i7-1255U is also power efficient processor, allowing the 52Wh battery to last for around 6 hours in my use case.

What really makes a business-centric laptop like the HP ProBook stand out from regular laptops is its slew of safety and security features. The laptop’s hardware security features include a TPM 2.0 security chip, HP DriveLock, fingerprint reader, and the camera privacy shutter.

HP also included loads of software security features in the included HP Wolf Security. These include malware blocking, safety browsing, and others.

USER EXPERIENCE

The HP ProBook 440 G9 was loaned to us for use as an event streaming laptop. I was initially confused at the choice, as I was expecting a beefier device like a gaming laptop. Perhaps there was a miscommunication about our requirements? I was, therefore, very pleasantly surprised at how the HP ProBook handled streaming a whole week-long event.

Beyond streaming, the HP ProBook 440 G9 is a small and light laptop. As mentioned previously, it is a very portable 14-inch laptop weighing just 1.38kg and 19.9mm thin. The included 45Whr charger is also light and portable, which is great when you need it to keep juiced up.

The HP Wolf Security is also pretty aggressive, which I liked. Whenever I downloaded software online, a pop up would ask if I really wanted to install

the downloaded files. I’m not sure if HP has pre-programmed some apps to be recognized, as I was able to initially install Chrome without any pop-ups, but Steam was flagged for some reason. That said, its better to have that double-checking software than unsuspectingly installing malware on your device.

Since the HP ProBook 440 G9 is a business laptop, don’t expect it to be the greatest for media consumption. As I previously said, I wanted the display to be a bit more vibrant. I also found that the speakers, even though they were front facing, were not as loud as expected. It’s good enough for small rooms or contained listening in your office booth, but that’s about it. Even so, the sound was nice without any signs of harshness even at the max level.

VALUE

The HP ProBook 440 G9 starts at PHP63,000 for the Intel Core i5-1235U variant and PHP71,500 for our Intel Core i7-1255U model. This laptop is not meant for everyone. If you’re looking for a powerful editing device, take a look at HP’s Victus-series.

The Lenovo Yoga Pro 7i is a stunning laptop that you can carry around anywhere you go. From its aluminum military-grade case, gorgeous 14.5-inch display, and overall sleek design, it’s a stylish laptop that can handle the rigors of office or remote work. Out of the box, it comes in a Tidal Teal colorway that makes it stand out. Thin bezels on both sides of the display provide more screen and the top bezel, while slightly thicker because of the FHD camera and IR sensor, doesn’t take away from the sleek look of the device.

On the left side, there is an HDMI port that supports a 4K external display connection at 60 Hz. There are also two USB-C ports, one of which is dedicated to Thunderbolt 4 use for faster transfer of large data to external storage and connection to high-res monitors and docking stations. On the opposite side is an always-on USB port, headphone jack, and the E-shutter switch of the laptop’s camera for digital privacy. Compared to the older Yoga series, the Yoga Pro 7i’s power button is between the audio jack and the E-shutter.

The keys on the LED-backlit keyboard are colored to match the rest of the device, and give the whole laptop a very cohesive look. You can adjust the brightness of all the keys in three modes for a better

typing experience in a dark environment. Apart from being wider, its glass surface touchpad is now buttonless. It tips the scales at just 3.28 pounds, and is just a shred over half an inch thick.

HARDWARE

The laptop may be compact, but it packs more punch than you think, given its dimensions. With a massive 16GB of RAM, a 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13700H CPU that runs at a maximum clock speed of 2.4GHz, and a 1 TB SSD, we see that Lenovo didn’t skimp on features. The 3K display brightness is more than enough to work under indoor environments. To add a cherry on top, it now comes with up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050 graphics card to make video rendering fast enough to keep you company during casual gaming sessions during your downtime. Our model comes in NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 GPU.

To ensure your security, there’s an FHD camera that allows automatic log-in upon face detection within 1.2 to 1.5 meters in cooperation with Windows Hello. The IR sensor helps the laptop to save battery when it does not detect your presence. For multimedia consumption, there are

the upgraded quad microphones with smart noise canceling and four 2W Dolby Atmos speakers with Smart Amplifier that you can further adjust using the Dolby Access app that comes in the laptop.

Out of the box, the laptop comes with Windows 11 Home ensuring users can get the latest software features, security updates, and security patches. Like its predecessors, the Lenovo Yoga Pro 7i also includes Lenovo Vantage, the brand’s application for device optimization, preinstalled.

USER EXPERIENCE

The Lenovo Yoga Pro 7i is no exception to the brand’s well loved line up devices. I used it as my main laptop for two weeks and it definitely kept up with both my work and play needs. As a graduate school student and a working professional in an IT company who regularly commutes twice a week, I appreciate how thin and

light it really is. I can easily lug it in my backpack and plop it down anywhere when I need to do a little work. It’s hard to get over how light it is, most especially when you experience how powerful and feature-packed this device is. I did notice though, that users might need an extra hub for connecting storage devices such as hard drives, SSDs, and memory cards since it has limited USB-A and USB-C ports.

The next thing that I loved about it was the screen. It’s wide, bright, and sharp, which makes it more pleasant to work on documents for long hours and reward myself with an immersive streaming experience of my favorite videos, movies, and TV shows. When it became necessary to use a second screen, or maybe something larger, the built-in HDMI port made that process so much simpler and allowed me to have a second display for meetings and reports. Thanks to its 120Hz refresh rate and 14.5-inch PureSight Pro display powered by Dolby Vision, videos and animations are buttery smooth, and colors are more accurate. The built-in quad microphones with noise-canceling capabilities made hands-free video calls clearer. Its Dolby Atmos-powered quad speakers brought clearer and louder sounds without compromising audio quality.

For battery endurance, the Yoga Pro 7i can last up to 7 hours on a single charge with the volume, brightness, and Wi-Fi connection set to maximum settings. The Rapid Charge Express feature will provide up to 3 hours of runtime within a 15-minute period. This saved me from looking for an electrical plug while out working for hours. Should you need to power it up, it can be charged via a separate USB-C port using its compact charger.

I also ran countless documents, tabs, and multimedia content, on top of audio editing software and video conferencing apps, work without problem. The WiFi 6E support helped a lot in getting a stable and speedy internet connection. It needed a little extra effort from the fans when things got a little heavy, but it still performed great. Personally, this left a good impression, given the size of this device.

My gaming experience was a breeze. I was able to enjoy Asphalt 9: Legends and Valorant, using the recommended settings in low and the laptop pushed upwards of 60FPS with no problem whatsoever. It is normal for devices to get hot after some time playing at a desk, though. This isn’t a gaming laptop, but the fact that it can handle light gaming is great.

Overall, it’s a very capable device, and factoring in its size and weight, it’s a machine that’s worth a splurge.

The performance, portability, and battery life make it a great option for a work device. POLY VOYAGER 4320UC

The pandemic has drastically changed the landscape of work, with more companies and employees embracing remote work. Initially, struggles hounded both employer and employee, but tech found a way to ease the process. Case in point, the Poly Voyager 4320UC, an enterprise-grade headset that offers office-level audio for home use.

WIRELESS HEADSET

DESIGN

The Voyager 4320UC is a wireless headset from Poly (formerly part of Plantronics). Our loaner unit is the variant that comes with a charging stand as well as a USB-C wireless dongle. Inside the box, you’ll also get a 1.5m USB-C to USB-C cord, as well as a cloth carrying case. There’s a different variant without the charging stand, and another with a USB-A wireless dongle.

The Voyager 4320UC is mainly made of plastic, but the good kind. It feels solid, giving you the confidence to finely adjust the headset for comfort. There’s decent padding on the ears and the headband; even during long use, it doesn’t feel too warm.

For those who wear glasses, the Voyager 4320UC can be a mixed bag. I personally had no concerns (more on that later), but other reviewers pointed out issues. The headband slider is also solid, with plenty of levels, so you can be sure there’s one to fit.

Most of the headset buttons are on the right ear cuff, including the volume and call buttons. Also found within the call button is the LED notification, which lets you and others know that there’s a call on the line. Also on the right cuff is the charging stand connection point, the USB-C charging port, the mic with the dedicated mute button, and the power switch that doubles as the mode selector.

The Voyager 4320UC is also very light, coming in at just 162g for the whole headset.

HARDWARE

The Voyager 4320UC connects to your PC via a wireless USB Type-C dongle. You can also use it wired by connecting the USB-C directly to the charging port of the PC. It also connects to your PC or phone via Bluetooth.

The headset is rated for up to 50m range in wireless. Its frequency range is optimized for up to 7KHz for phone calls and 20Hz to 20KHz for media. Finally, for battery it has a 350mAh battery that is rated to last for 18 hours of continuous talk time (with the LED on and wireless via Bluetooth), 47 hours of listening time, and a standby time of up to 50 days. Charging is also fairly quick, giving users 10 hours of listening time for 15 minutes of charging. It is fully charged in 1.6-hours.

To fully utilize the Poly Voyager 4320UC, you’ll also want to download the Poly Lens app. The free app lets you configure the headset, such as firmware updates, limiting the max volume, and many others. Beyond hardware configuration, there are also some wellness reminders,

such as telling the user to stand up if they’ve been sitting for too long. It also helps you relax by playing natural noises in the background, though you’ll need to set it up to not play as soon as you open your desktop.

USER EXPERIENCE

One of the most surprising things about the Poly Voyager 4320UC that caught me off guard was its overall comfort level. While I may not have a job that requires me to wear a headset for most of my working hours, I still did try my best to keep the device on me.

As mentioned earlier, I had no issues with the Voyager 4320UC even though I wear glasses. It could be because my glasses have a very slim frame, so your mileage may vary.

The headset is one of the lightest I’ve tried. I used the headset for around four to six hours every day, and I did not feel any fatigue. Another notable thing I noticed is its audio quality. While the Voyager 4320UC is made for calls and video conferences, it still offers some

decent music output. The bass is not as strong as I like, but the overall output is satisfactory.

There were a number of small details that I really appreciated, such as the the mic automatically turning on or off as you pull it down, or having an integrated volume level on your PC. It’s small things like these that make the headset stand out.

One thing I missed is noise cancelation — on both the speaker and mic. I personally feel like the over-the-ear design of the cuffs does not offer the best noise canceling experience. While I didn’t have any massive issues with noise since my house is fairly quiet, there were instances when I got distracted by dogs barking or cars honking outside. Since most Voyager 4320 UC users are likely those working at home, better noise cancelation would be appreciated.

On the other hand, noise suppression on the mic could be further improved. I work with a fan blowing directly at me, and I found that the mic does pick up some of that wind noise.

Another area for improvement is the charging stand. I was confused why the charging stand cannot be the wireless connector itself rather than have a separate dongle, as it already connects to your PC via USB-C. Why would you need a separate USB-C dongle? In any case, there is a variant sold without the charging stand.

Sony is best known for audio-video entertainment devices, including the Sony WFC700N wireless earbuds. They made me feel the beat, groove my walk, and make my day shimmer while I listen to my tunes on Spotify.

DESIGN

Made for comfort and durability, the Sony WF-C700N has a charging capsule body that houses the wireless earbuds. Lightweight and compact, you can carry this anywhere, in your purse or pocket. The overall design of the earbuds is clean and simple. The earbuds are easily secured, and don’t hurt my ears even when I wear them for a long time.

In line with Sony’s aim to achieve a zero environmental footprint, the WF-C700N is packaged in a cardboard box with no plastic.

Inside the box, are the Sony WF-C700N in Sage Green charging case, a reference guide on how to connect the earbuds to my phone. a USB Type-C cable for charging the case, and the hybrid silicone rubber earbuds in various sizes for wearing comfort. If sage green is not your color, you can select other color variants of Sony WF-C700N in white, black, and lavender purple.

HARDWARE

The Sony WF-C700N earbuds have noise cancellation, so I can be fully immersed in my tunes while working

and commuting. Pressing the left earbud allows you to mute or unmute outdoor noise. Once unmuted, the ambient sound can be adjusted from 1-20 in the Sony Headphones Connect App.

In the default setting, the vocals and the beats from the earbuds are clear and balanced. Thumps from the bass and the sounds from the treble are not overpowering and the vocals of the artist can be heard. But if you want more bass, the sounds can be customized through the companion app. You can select bright, excited, mellow, relaxed, vocal, treble boost, bass boost, speech, and manual. I listened to my tunes through bright beats, and it did brighten up my day, especially while listening to pop-jazz type music. Customization does not affect the original music as the pitch of the vocals and the instruments remain normal, thanks to a digital sound enhancement engine that maintains the original even when when beats are enhanced.

I was able to listen my tunes on the Sony WF-C700N earbuds for the whole day, thanks to its capsule case that also doubles

as a power bank for the earbuds. The case is charged through a USB Type C slot, taking about an hour to be fully charged. Additionally, the Sony WF-C700N earbuds are IPX4 rated, which means that these are water-resistant. Connectivity is the latest Bluetooth 5.2 version, ensuring a more stable and faster connection, so you can listen to music from a distance.

USER EXPERIENCE

The feather-like weight and the pastel appearance of the Sony WF-C700N really invite you to step into the world of your own music. It is easy to wear as they fit perfectly on the ears, and remain comfortable even when worn for extended periods.

However, to get the full experience, you first need to download the Sony Headphones Connect App from the Play Store for Android or the Apple store. Then, you can turn on your Bluetooth from your smartphone and release the earbuds from its capsule charging case. The Sony WF-C700N can easily be detected and once you’re connected, voila! You are ready to use the earbuds.

The purpose of the first step is to customize the functions of the earbuds, allowing you to adjust the sound according to your listening preferences. In my case, I chose the Bright setting as i like to hear everything from the music. I set noise cancellation to 20, allowing me to focus on my work and sometimes chill

through the beats. Note, though, that its noise cancellation will not completely eliminate outside noise.

Some people listen to their music in extremely loud volume, and this can leak outside of their earbuds. With the Sony WF-C700N, the sound leakage is minimized so you don’t bother other people near you. But my only issue with the earbuds is I must decide its function, especially when I go out and commute. In the default setting, the left side controls the ambient/noise and the right controls music playback. This means I can only adjust the volume on my smartphone app.

If you like using earbuds while working out, the Sony WF-C700N is also meant for you. These won’t fall out, and the IPX rating means they’re sweat-proof. They also deliver great sound for mobile gaming. And if you’re the forgetful type, Fast Pair lets you easily-find the earbuds.

The Sony WF-C700N is priced at PHP6,999 — not cheap, but worth the investment.

Release the athlete in you as Xiaomi adds another upgrade to its family that makes you play and move limitless, the Redmi Watch 3 Active. It may look like its predecessor, but more functionalities help you meet your lifestyle or fitness goals throughout the week.

The Redmi Watch 3 Active is a versatile and effortless smartwatch. It is crafted with a rubber black plastic strap that is easy to wear on the wrist, and a 1.83” LCD screen that gives a sleek and modern appearance. I can view the time and other health data on its default screen, and the colors of the icons from its newest UI/UX design make it easy to read. Xiaomi coated its smartwatch with non-conductive vacuum metallization (NCVM) making it light and comfortable for all-day wear. I can run, jump, or do cartwheels, as does not restrict any type of movement while wearing it. Its watch face is customizable, with over 200 designs on the Mi Fitness App.

Under the LCD display is the sensor that checks your daily health and fitness. This automatically lights up based on the chosen time that you set for it. The magnetic charging pin is also located under the LCD. The power button and microphone are positioned on the right side, while the speaker is on the left side.

Included in the Redmi Watch 3 Active box are a USB-A magnetic charging cable and the user guide. It comes in gray, with yellow and green as optional strap colors.

HARDWARE

The fitness sensors on the Redmi Watch 3 Active include daily heart monitoring wherein you can choose from automatic, 1-minute, 10-minute, and 30-minute intervals. Another component of its monitoring The high and low heartbeat alert automatically lets you know when your heartbeat goes beyond certain set parameters, such as 100 to 150 BPM for high 40 to 50 BPM for low.

Sleep tracking monitors the number of hours you sleep and nap, and with detailed data for deep sleep, light sleep, REM (rapid eye movement), number of times you wake up, average heartbeat, and SpO2. The advanced monitoring and breathing score must be turned on to get full sleep data.

Finally, SpO2 monitoring tracks the blood oxygen in the circulatory system. This can be measured anytime especially during or after a workout, but you can also turn on the all-day tracking and select a specific level that alerts you if your blood oxygen is low.

The Redmi Watch 3 Active is made with a 5ATM water-resistant rating, which means it can be while swimming, for depths to 50 meters.

It can be paired to your phone via Bluetooth, and Xiaomi claims that calls can be answered just by raising your hand. I tried it, but it didn’t work for me. Nonetheless, the speaker and the mic work just fine —I can hear clean and clear audio on the smartwatch. However, without a noise cancellation system, the Redmi Watch 3 Active picks up all

ambient noise, which may not be ideal in crowded places. A 289mAh battery powers the watch for up to a week.

USER EXPERIENCE

Being a Xiaomi device, the Redmi Watch 3 Active is supported by the Mi Fitness App. You should download this and log in to your Xiaomi account to enjoy all the functionalities of the smartwatch.

Wearing the Redmi Watch 3 Active allows you to be more focused, not just in the fitness aspect, but also in studying or working. As I tend to completely forget to drink water or eat meals when working on tasks, it helps me to be mindful of my health, using smartphone apps that keep track of your daily schedule. It is motivating because it’s like a friendly companion that supports you through your daily activities.

Checking the time is easy as it automatically switches on when I move my arm and it faces upward, and can be switched off when it’s time to sleep.

The Redmi Watch 3 Active is very useful for land and water activities and workouts. It lets me know my freestyle sprint speed in the swimming pool. Its water clearing system releases water from the speaker just by shaking. Note, though, that its 5ATM water-resistant rating means it can only handle shallow water and not recommended for snorkeling, diving, and other underwater activities.

I found it much more effective for land activities and workouts. When I need to take a breather, especially when I follow a HIIT workout video on YouTube, it sounds an alarm when I reach low blood oxygen or have a high heartbeat.

Its sleep monitoring function is quite fun, informing me about my sleep data. I learned that I’m more of a light sleeper than a deep sleeper, and that I dream a lot in my sleep from my REM data. I also found out how many hours I sleep I actually get each night. I used to think that I normally get 8 hours of sleep but now realize I must go to bed earlier.

VIVO Y36

I’ve been off Android for quite some time now, so when I was given the chance to review the new vivo Y36, I immediately jumped on the chance. Here’s how I found the phone when I took it for a spin on a week-long work trip.

DESIGN

The review unit we got came in an eyecatching Glitter Aqua colorway, with a visual sandblasted back panel that pops when it catches the light. I say visual because there’s a transparent glass piece protecting the textured design so you won’t actually be able to run your fingers over it. The vivo logo is in the rear’s bottom left, while the upper left houses the camera island with the flash module and huge rear camera lenses.

The volume rockers and power button sit on the phone’s right edge; the top edge has a microphone pinhole and the combination microSD-SIM card tray; and the bottom has a 3.5mm headphone jack, another microphone pinhole, USB-C port, and single bottom-firing speakers. The left edge is bare. Up front is the gigantic 6.64inch, Full HD 1080p IPS LCD display with a punch hole display along the top side for the selfie shooter.

The phone also comes with a clear transparent jelly case out of the box so you can use and show it off immediately while increasing its chances of survival against drops and rough surfaces. It’s a thoughtful inclusion for those with butterfingers like me as I accidentally dropped it from waist level once and it survived without a scratch.

Overall, the phone looks pretty nice and feels decent in-hand. My only gripe is the huge two-piece black camera assemblies at the back which I feel distract from the chic aesthetic it has going on.

USER EXPERIENCE

I used the vivo Y36 as a daily driver for about a week on the road and in the field, and it has been great for my everyday use case scenario—lots of photo and video taking, intermittent social media and browser use, watching videos here and there, and a few intermittent gaming sessions.

Coming from a smaller phone with just a 5.4-inch screen, the extra real estate from the vivo Y36 was much appreciated both for messaging and viewing media. The

HARDWARE

Starting off with the display, the vivo Y36 has a sizeable 6.64-inch Full HD (1080 x 2388 px) IPS display with a 90Hz refresh rate and a 240Hz touch sampling rate. It runs on a power efficiency-focused but dated Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset with an Adreno 610 GPU and 8GB of RAM which should make the vivo Y36 a decent performer across the board. However, the chip means no 5G.

The 256GB built-in storage is quite generous. Out of the box, it arrives with around 235GB of free storage, with the rest taken up by the OS and some pre-installed apps which you can opt to remove. You should have a hard time filling this phone up, but if ever you do, you can bolster it with up to a 1TB microSD card.

One more thing of note is the battery. With 5000mAh of juice and combined with the battery life-focused Snapdragon 680, the vivo Y36 should easily last a whole day of mixed use with plenty to spare. It also ships with a 44W fast charger out of the box to make charging the gargantuan battery a less time-consuming affair.

screen is quite bright and is still viewable even outside on a sunny day. Colors also came out vibrant and decently saturated, and the 90Hz display made for a fluid scrolling experience.

The cameras also performed nicely in well-lit conditions. Shooting with HDR on, captured images came out nicely with decent sharpness, no horrid-looking color enhancements, and decent balance between highlights and shadows. As with many phones, the vivo Y36 struggles to resolve details and to suppress noise in dimly-lit environments. However, the accompanying 50MP Super Night

Algorithm technology in the camera is able to churn out surprisingly great lowlight photos as long as you can hold the phone steady for a few seconds. Videos I’ve taken also came out nice, and the software-based stabilization still works and does not produce very noticeable artifacts even if I’m walking haphazardly. I did miss having a wide-angle camera and 4K video option though.

As for the battery, the Flash Charge power brick performs as advertised. From totally dead, 30 minutes of being tethered to the wall juiced the vivo Y36 up to 47%. It took a total of around 1 hour and 10 minutes

to fully charge to 100%—quite reasonable for the sizeable power source. I also found that I could easily go around two days before I needed to top off the battery, a runtime which is unsurprising given the battery size and power-efficient chip.

Speaking of the Snapdragon 680, the vivo Y36 scored 6897 in PC Mark’s Work 3.0 Performance test. In 3D Mark’s Wild Life test, it scored 587, averaged 3.5 frames per second, and is reportedly outperformed by 94% of all devices. Real-life gaming use was a mixed bag. Mobile Legends performs smoothly even at the highest graphic settings. Even a shooter like Call of Duty Mobile performed smoothly as long as I didn’t push graphics settings all the way up. However, playing NBA 2K was not the smoothest affair and navigating the menus had some hiccups here and there. In game even on Low graphics, it feels like it barely keeps 30fps.

Thousands of Suzuki riders gathered at the Raider R150 Summit 2023 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila in Pasay City on July 16, 2023. The Raider R150 Summit is a celebration for the whole Team Suzuki which was further highlighted when other Suzuki motorcycle owners joined the event and danced to the Oras na Para MagMotor jingle. Capping the festivity was rock band Kamikazee whose act made the whole World Trade Center sing in chorus. Thirty-five years ago, Square was on the brink of collapse, having released some poorly received games for the Nintendo Famicom Disk System. Series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi sought to create a role-playing game (RPG) inspired by the release of Dragon Quest (1986). Little did Sakaguchi realize at the time that this game, Final Fantasy, would become one of the most well-known and best-selling franchises in video game history. The initial development team only had five members (10 after Sakaguchi asked for more help on the project), and it became a runaway hit in Japan. 35 years later, Final Fantasy continues to sell like hotcakes. But what about the latest numbered entry in the series, Final Fantasy ? Would it reach the lofty standards set by previous games in the series?

Twenty years after Sakaguchi’s departure from Square Enix, Final Fantasy XVI seeks to continue Sakaguchi’s vision of what an RPG should be. The action-based combat returns from and other series staples, such as Chocobos and summons (now called Eikons). XVI takes place on Valisthea, which is divided into six nations, each holding Crystals and Dominants, alongside humans who serve as hosts for each nation’s Eikon. The protagonist, Clive Rosfield, while the firstborn son of the Kingdom of Rosaria’s ruling family, acts as a guardian to his younger brother Joshua, who is the Dominant of Phoenix and thus heir to the throne. They seek to combat the Blight, a magical power that slowly but eventually consumes all that come into contact with it.

Valisthea is composed of six nations on two different continents, Ash and Storm. Rosaria is located on the Storm continent, which is also occupied by the Holy Empire of Sanbreque and the Dhalmekian Republic. On the Ash continent is the Kingdom of Waloed. The Crystalline Dominion is located between Ash and Storm, while the Iron Kingdom is an isolated nation off the coast of Storm controlled by the Crystalline Orthodox. Dominants are seen as political leaders, or at least VIPs, due to their ability to wield Eikons. However, they are also seen as controversial for the same reasons, also being weapons of war, or suffer abuse from other powers in the game.

Clive is the only controllable character, which may make combat seem simpler, but as a longtime fan of the Final Fantasy series, I have always enjoyed controlling all my party members and making use of their unique abilities. After the prologue, Clive is able to travel to other parts of Valisthea. There is a hideout that you can use and track relationships with different NPCs, including a place to buy items and upgrade equipment, as well as take on side quests and monster hunts. Combat takes place in the open world, which includes dungeons, towns, and other areas that one can travel to on foot or by Chocobo. Clive can use normal attacks, dodge attacks, or use elements from Eikons. One of my favorite features in combat is the ability to utilize multiple Eikons in battle to string together combo attacks. A returning feature is the ability to stagger enemies, which can stun enemies and leave them more vulnerable to attacks. You can even view information on locations, characters, and terminology via Active Time Lore.

Playing on Story Mode might seem easy to the Final Fantasy veteran, but is great for newcomers to the franchise. In the past, the daunting difficulty of some Final Fantasy games have forced the developers to create easier versions of the game for North American and European audiences. As many RPGs have done over the years, you can carry on your progress into a New Game+, which brings your current statistics and equipment into a new game. For the truly battle-hardened, you can even play “Final Fantasy” mode which ramps up the difficulty of the game. For the trophy hunters, one can play in arcade mode, which grades players for combat, and Ultimaniac Mode challenges can be found within this mode. Some challenge modes place limits on Clive such as only using one Eikon in battle, so players will have to get creative to beat these modes.

So to answer the question: has Final Fantasy XVI lived up to Sakaguchi’s standards of what an RPG should look like? While I’m more of an old-school RPG guy, it’s refreshing to see a mix of what makes old RPGs and new RPGs great, such as a compelling story as well as challenges that will test the skills of veteran RPG players alike. While the game is only out for PS5 as of this writing, it should be ported to PC soon. 2023 has released a lot of strong games, and Final Fantasy XVI could make a strong challenge for any game awards.

Hyundai Motor Philippines Inc. (HMPH) pilots its educational aid and program dedicated to creating opportunities for disadvantaged youth passionate about the future of automotive and mobility. Together with the Don Bosco Institute of Makati (DBIM) and the Department of Education Taguig City and Pateros (DepED TAPAT) school division, “Hyundai Accelerate” officially went underway through an official agreement signing ceremony last June 27, 2023.

“At Hyundai Motor, we have a strong commitment to give back to society. This is rooted in our brand vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’ wherein we believe that mobility is more than going from one place to another, but rather connecting people with quality time and enabling them to get more out of life. Which led us to us forming ‘Hyundai Accelerate’,” says HMPH president Dongwook Lee. “It is our grassroots scholarship program dedicated to providing Filipino senior high school graduates an opportunity for further studies. This project is a special one, as it not only cultivates teaching moments, but more importantly, uplifts the lives of our future mentees. We look forward to meeting our first batch of scholars and becoming a part of their journey”.

The Don Bosco Institute of Makati, established in 1954, is one of the country’s prestigious, all-boys private schooIs with curriculums for Elementary,

Junior High School, Senior High School, and Technical-Vocational Education and Trainings (TVET). The latter offers specialized courses that prepare graduates for a career as an automobile mechanic, general electrician, fitter machinist, refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic, or industrial electronics. Its campus located at Chino Roces Avenue in Makati City, will serve as the training grounds and camp for HMPH’s pioneering group of students.

For this year, HMPH will be enrolling 40 qualified individuals from the National Capital Region (NCR), under the said school’s automotive string. The first 10 will be nominated by DepEd TAPAT, and the rest shall be screened and endorsed by the local government units of Pasig City (15) and Quezon City (15).

Hyundai Accelerate is intended to support the access of Filipino youth to quality technical education and turn them into holistic professionals. At the same time, it reflects the brand’s strengthened commitment as an aftersales provider. The scholars will undergo an 8-month classroom-based and practical lessons program combined with a 4-month OJT at their nearest Hyundai service center. There shall also be quarterly and mid-term progress reports to assess the competency and commitment level for possible employment with HMPH’s dealer partners.

Within the new Bumble For Friends app, it’s easy to get a group together to make a plan to meet IRL.

Any member can create a plan for a group meetup with at least two of their connections from the conversations tab.

A member selects a planned activity from a list of suggestions or creates their own.

Once a member selects a plan theme or creates a title for the group chat, they can invite at least two of their matches.

Their matches receive an invite in their chat that is titled the name of the planned activity, which can be edited.

Anyone who accepts the invite can join the group chat and start discussing any of the meetup details.

EPSON WINS BEST OF THE BEST AWARDS IN THE PRODUCT DESIGN CATEGORY AT THE 2023 RED DOT DESIGN AWARDS

Epson’s series of SL-D530 compact photo production printers has become one of a small percentage of entrants to win a Best of the Best award, the highest distinction in the Red Dot: Product Designs 2023 awards. This marks the fourth time that Epson has won Best of the Best. Epson also received Red Dot awards for five inkjet printer models, one industrial robot, and one projector.

SureLab SL-D530 series of compact photo production printers. The design of these compact, lightweight

photo production printers provides installation flexibility in shops where space is limited. Up to three units can be stacked on top of one another. Meanwhile, front access operation means you can install them even on narrow shelves and counters. Environmental impacts are minimized by employing a housing that contains recycled resin and ink bottles instead of ink cartridges, resulting in less packaging and other waste.

In previous articles about Sega products, I have always talked about Sega’s willingness to innovate and take technological leaps into the unknown. While not exactly the giant leap forward that many other Sega products are known for (Sega Dreamcast, Sega VR, Sega Activator), the Game Gear had what the Game Boy didn’t have, opening up a new front in the console wars. The Game Boy’s screen was monochromatic, a standard feature for handheld consoles up to this point (including Nintendo’s Game & Watch, a predecessor to the Game Boy). Still, Sega once again sought to beat its rival with a full-color landscape backlit screen.

Codenamed “Project Mercury,” Sega was late to the party when it came to handheld consoles. But as the saying goes,

better late than never, right? But with every new technological leap, there are always questions about the viability of such a project. The Atari Lynx was the first handheld console to have a full-color backlit screen when it came out in September 1989. NEC’s TurboExpress, a handheld version of the TurboGrafx-16, came out in 1990. The Game Gear was released in Japan in 1990, North America and Europe in 1991, and Australia in 1992. Therefore, Sega had to differentiate itself from the competition after pushing the console to market to gain control of the handheld console market. As a long-time Sega fan, I had gotten the Game Gear a couple of years into its lifespan.

marketed as a portable version of the Sega Master System, Sega’s (relatively) little-known competitor to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It could be said that the Game Gear was backward compatible with the Master System, but only through an adapter called the Master Gear. The console debuted at USD149.99 in 1991 (USD336 in 2023), which made it expensive for a handheld console, although slightly cheaper than the Nintendo 3DS’s launch in 2011 at USD249.99 (USD339.09 in 2023) even when adjusted for inflation.

Just like the Game Boy had a pack-in game, Tetris, the Game Gear had a similar pack-in game, Columns, to boost the sales of the Game Gear. The Game Gear itself had curved surfaces to make it more comfortable to hold than the Game Boy. As someone who owned both consoles, I found the landscape-oriented Game Gear easier on my hands than the portrait-oriented Game Boy, despite it being larger. The games were engaging, although they were watered-down staples of Sega franchises such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Shinobi.

Technological superiority, however, came at a cost. The Game Gear supported 4,096 colors, which was very robust for the early 1990s. But this came at the cost of battery life. The Game Gear required six AA batteries and could only run for about 3-5 hours, while the Game Boy required only four AA batteries and ran for 30 hours. Safe to say, I spent a small fortune on batteries trying to play the Game Gear. In my personal experience, it eventually was relegated to a console I played in bed rather than something I could take on the road with me. However, I did take it on the road because

I had a carrying case for the console itself, which fit all my games and the AC adapter as well.

To combat the constant drain on batteries, Sega released two external rechargeable battery packs for the Game Gear. The Game Gear also came with a headphone jack. Some other adapters, such as the TV Tuner, allowed consumers to watch analog television on the Game Gear. There were adapters to plug the Game Gear into one’s car through the cigarette lighter ports found in older cars so you could truly play on the go (albeit at the cost of car batteries instead of six AA batteries).

Unfortunately, the Game Gear’s decline was a result of Sega having too many products out at once, as Sega was also supporting the Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, and Sega Saturn throughout the Game Gear’s lifespan. The Game Gear only sold a fraction of the units that the Game Boy sold, and the Game Gear was discontinued in 1997, making it another victim of Sega’s business strategy of pushing the envelope of technology before its time.

Despite this, the Game Gear has come back in more ways than one. The Game Gear Micro came out in 2020 in Japan and (mercifully) uses only two AAA batteries. You can also find Game Gear games on the Nintendo 3DS’s Virtual Console if you’re looking to get your Game Gear fix on. While an ambitious project for its time, it was, unfortunately, a victim of Sega trying to juggle multiple projects at once, but held a special place in my heart as a robust handheld console that tried to push the limits of what you could bring on the go.
