AI and Emotions:
HOW WE TAUGHT TECHNOLOGY TO FEEL AND HOW TECHNOLOGY CHANGED THE WAY WE FEEL Words by Gabriel Pe
February 2024
6
EMOTIONAL AI AND DECODING THE HUMAN CONNECTION Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning have rapidly developed in recent years. Large language model AI took the stage last year, demonstrating how AI can be trained to understand us. Yet, there is still something missing from the current AI and human interaction: emotion. One of the limiting factors in AI is that, by default, it is merely a machine trained to respond to whatever it was trained upon. Even AI with highly advanced machine learning is limited to only providing what is asked without fully understanding why. This lack of connection still separates man from machine, and why man feels something missing when interacting with AI. To address this missing element, in 1995, researchers at MIT started looking at “Affective Computing.” Then MIT Media Lab professor Rosalind Picard described Affective Computing as “computing that relates to, arises from, or deliberately influences emotions.” Now, it is also known as Affective AI and Emotional AI. Emotional AI, simply put, is a subset of AI that analyzes human emotion. It utilizes various data like language, voice/ audio, and other cues to determine how to react to certain things. Emotional AI is already part of our world, with its most common use found in marketing. Emotional AI is used for product review analysis and recommendation tailoring. They’re among the AI tools behind some of your shopping algorithms and even video recommendations.

THE LONELIEST GENERATION Have you ever heard the term “the loneliest generation” to describe Gen Z? In a 2019 survey, it was found that 73% of Gen Z, those currently 11-26 years old, felt lonely sometimes or always. Most of the loneliest respondents were those in the workforce or entering the workforce, ages 18-23 (back in 2019). This is an ironic sentiment, as Gen Z is considered the most internet-savvy generation. Many would argue that Gen Z is the first generation whose lives have been entirely online, with mainstream internet kicking off just a few years before their birth. When the internet took off, it was an unprecedented highway to information and communication. It broke barriers by providing new methods of communication, from chat and message rooms, instant messaging apps, and social media to the facilitation of mass adoption of video calls and conferencing. It’s this communication highway that allowed us to adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue under the new normal. While the world has slowly returned to pre-pandemic status, our reliance on these online communication tools persists. In the study, 71% of those feeling lonely were heavy social media users, another irony when the platform was supposed to further connect individuals. The overreliance on technology, particularly social media, has changed the way we interact. Gen Z is the first generation to depend solely on online communication. Perhaps this reliance on online communication has also made them a generation that’s socially disconnected as compared to earlier generations. Loneliness has gotten so bad that the US has deemed it an epidemic. Doctors and other health professionals warn that loneliness and social disconnection are physically unhealthy, equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
February 2024
8
CAN AI SAVE THE LONELIEST GENERATION? Yet the problem of the loneliest generation will not be limited to just Gen Z. Many experts predict that under prevailing conditions, the epidemic will spread to more individuals. As we rely more heavily on technology to move the world, we are also slowly disconnecting with more people.
There’s also the shifting of reliance. AI chatbots have grown so good at replicating human conversation that we forget they’re AI in the first place. Some individuals could shift their need for connection to the AI itself, further isolating themselves from a genuine human and social connection. Finally, there are privacy concerns when relying entirely on AI. Behind these AI are the organizations that train and program them. While some have good intentions to improve human lives, there is still the risk of violating users’ privacy as they share intimate details about themselves with the AI.
This continued cycle raises the question, “Can Emotional AI help?” There are already some attempts. AI therapists utilizing Emotional AI are increasingly available. These AI therapists do help in a small way, allowing individuals to learn more about themselves and offer mental health support and, in some cases, diagnostics. However, these AI therapy solutions are not without risk. Human nature is complex, and there’s a possibility that what AI offers may not be right for you. There’s also the so-called AI bias, with AI not trained about certain races’ data sets. For example, a person of color or different ethnicity will have different circumstances and reactions to stimuli than the typical white American.
9
At the end of the day, while AI can be a tool to process our emotions, it remains just that – a tool. Humans are complex individuals, and part of that complexity is our need for genuine social connections. Genuine connection can’t be found just by scouring the interweb or through digital communication. It is built upon friendship, trust, and a real organic touch. While we can find connections online, only a few are genuine enough to be carried off offline.

Our first encounter is a twist of miscommunication, where a message meant to be flirty is taken as criticism. This often leads to conflicts because it’s challenging to convey one’s tone through text. But hold on to the safety rail because there is another twist of conflict: delayed responses. The sender of the message, eagerly awaiting a response to a love message, may be dejected about not immediately receiving affirmation. This could lead to the sender feeling insecure, despite the receiver having a legitimate response for the delay.
Add to this a huge heart-thumping twist when you discover your partner’s private message by chance, and suddenly become suspicious and confrontational, creating conflict over trust issues and privacy boundaries.
Loops of digital jealousy may appear when you notice your partner continuously liking another person’s photos and videos on social media.
One is building bridges with your words. Instead of jumping to negative conclusions, engaging in face-to-face conversations through video calls

can be helpful in resolving issues to achieve positive outcomes. This applies to everyday misunderstandings like clarifying confusing messages or explaining an ex’s unexpected notification. For instance, if your partner sees a message from an ex saying, “I miss you,” “I love you,” or “I still can’t get over you,” it will surely create a sharp ache in your partner’s heart. In these situations, be sure to keep it real and straight because honesty is the foundation of genuine connection in this digital age. Expressing your feelings authentically through a vulnerable video call or heartfelt text sprinkled with emojis that truly speak your heart or even a thoughtful voice note that captures

On the other hand, you can transform your digital rollercoaster into a joyful journey of love and connection.” While expressing your feelings undoubtedly strengthens the emotional bridge between your partner, valuing quality time takes it a step further. It allows you to actively engage with each other’s presence. Maybe you could cook a virtual dinner together, bingewatch your favorite movies or series with your partner, battle side by side in co-op games, plan your next in-person adventures by exploring places through digital screens, or simply focus on conversations free from distractions. Remember, even amidst the digital
But, even though you’ve got this guide, it doesn’t mean you’ll dodge all the romantic twists and turns in your digital journey. Challenges are bound to happen, but facing them together can actually make your connection stronger and help you understand each other better. So why not roll with the digital rollercoaster in romance? It might get a bit dizzy, but you and your partner have each other’s backs. After all, the real joy comes from those shared moments— whether they’re virtual or happening in real life. They’re what make your love story in this digital age unique and special.

the raw essence of your emotions can cultivate “digital empathy.” It’s similar to building a bridge of connection that steadies your love through the rollercoaster’s wildest loops because it’s okay to be vulnerable to your partner. It won’t damage your relationship or the way you look, both of you will be an emotional support to navigate the twists and turns, even miles apart. LENOVO LEGION GO HANDHELD PC GAMING
Ever since the launch of the Steam Deck in 2022, handheld consoles have taken on a new life. Handheld PC gaming devices had a niche market prior to 2022, but have now gone mainstream as other brands try their own take in the segment. Lenovo threw its hat into the mix last year with the launch of its Lenovo Legion Go handheld gaming console, and it’s the best in the market right now.

DESIGN gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
If there’s one word to describe the Lenovo Legion Go, it would be “massive.” Compared to its counterparts, the Legion Go is the biggest; in fact, as someone with small hands, I found certain actions difficult to execute. It’s also pretty heavy coming at 854g. While some may consider it a detriment, the detachable side controls are a trick up its sleeve to draw the crowd back. The Lenovo Legion Go’s main tablet has an 8.8-inch QHD+ (2150 x 1660) IPS display with a 144Hz refresh rate. On top are the volume and power buttons, a USB-C 4.0 port, the microSD expansion slot, the 3.5mm headphone jack, speaker holes, and some exhaust vents. Underneath is another USB-C 4.0 port that can also charge the device. It’s useful when you want to charge the Legion Go within its carrying case. The notch to pull the kickstand when you want to go detachable mode can be found at the back.
Both controllers have hall-effect analog sticks, which is a nice choice if you ask me. There is also the L/R button and trigger. The left controller has the left Legion button (which opens Legion space), the menu/start button, the view button, and the directional pad. At the back are two additional customizable buttons. The right controller has the right Legion button (which opens settings by default), the ABXY buttons,
33
and trackpad. What makes the right button stand out is the sensor and switch underneath. Lenovo has equipped the Legion Go with what it calls the FPS mode, which turns the right controller into a vertical mouse for FPS fans. At the side are the Mouse 1 and 2 buttons, and just beneath the right trigger is a scroll wheel (how neat is that!); behind is the third customizable button and the Mouse 3 button.

Lenovo Legion Go
HARDWARE The Lenovo Legion Go is powered by an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor. The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme is a “Zen 4” octa-core processor with 16 threads, so it’s technically a Ryzen 7000 processor made for handheld gaming machines. Paired with the AMD Ryzen Z1 processor is an integrated AMD Radeon RDNA 3 graphics. According to AMD, the Z1 Extreme has 12 graphic cores, which is on par with a discrete graphics card. Other notable specs include the 16GB LPDDR5X 7500MHz RAM, and 512 PCI.e Gen 4 M.2 SSD storage. If you find yourself short on storage (trust me, you will), the Legion Go has a dedicated microSD slot for up to 2TB of extra storage space.
gadgetsmagazine.com.ph
It has a 49Whr battery, which lasts 2 to 3 hours depending on use (more on this later). The unit comes with a 65W charger that utilizes the two USB-C 4.0 slots. In terms of performance, this is where things get interesting. The Lenovo Legion Go is certainly a capable device able to run AAA games like CyberPunk 2077 and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla at a stable 30 to 40fps, but there is a caveat. You’ll definitely need to tinker around the settings menu to find the right spot. Fortunately, for games like CyberPunk 2077, there’s already a Steam Deck that does tune the game a bit, but it is still not the best experience. After trying out a couple of settings, I was able to achieve 40fps for Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, 23-34fps for CyberPunk 2077, 63fps for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and 52–54fps for NBA2K23. As for lighter games like Hades, Valorant, and League of Legends, I was able to easily break the 100fps mark.
USER EXPERIENCE Using the Lenovo Legion Go was an eye-opener for me. I had my doubts about the handheld PC gaming trend since most early products in the space were battery chuggers or thermal nightmares. While the Lenovo Legion Go is neither, it still is not the perfect PC replacement. One of the first things I noticed: While it doesn’t chug battery in default settings, once you crank it to performance mode, you’re left with just over February 2024

SPECIFICATIONS
Beyond gaming, Legion Go offers some great PC usability. It runs on Windows 11 by default, with the Legion Space app booting from Windows, so you can terminate it or simply minimize it. You can do some light work, or stream some movies or music on the device. In fact, a portion of this review was actually written using the Legion Go, paired to my Bluetooth keyboard and utilizing the FPS mode controller. The two USB-C ports do support Display out, so you can connect the device to an external monitor for more productivity. The external monitor mode is perfect when you really want to boost your gaming performance. The AMD Ryzen Z1 Processor gets a bit of a boost when the device is plugged in; add to that toggling performance mode, and you’re on your way for a fun time. Even without the external monitor, Lenovo did a great job incorporating customizability within the Lenovo Legion Go. Using the Legion R button, you can set the power draw of the processor, decide the fan speed and noise, and even the
display resolution and screen refresh rate. You can easily access this menu even in the middle of a game. There’s also a task manager shortcut in case of unexpected glitches. Speaking of gaming performance, while it performed amazingly during testing, I found myself struggling with storage. I managed to install just five games in the 500GB storage, so you better cash out on that microSD to fully bring over your library. Lastly, the Lenovo Legion Go is a big device. It is currently the biggest in the handheld sphere, so users with small hands might need a bit of time to get used to it.
VALUE The Lenovo Legion Go is available in the market for PHP49,995. It’s more expensive than its competitors, but it does offer more value. The detachable controllers, the powerful AMD Z1 Extreme processor, and 2K 144Hz refresh rate display are just some of the quality of life features you never knew you needed from a handheld gaming PC.

SMARTPHONE
Whether it’s for studying, office tasks, casual gaming, or capturing moments, the entry-level realme C67 shines performance-wise. February 2024

DESIGN Out of the box, the realme C67 exudes a modern and lightweight impression that made me want to explore its features further. The slim 7.59mm body and rounded edges contribute to its modern aesthetic style. Weighing only 185 grams, it made me feel at ease carrying it around all day. This is a smartphone that fits just right in your hand, striking a good balance between weight and comfort. As I flipped the smartphone to explore the back, the Sunny Oasis color greeted me like stepping into a daylight forest. The threecolor gradient coating process creates shimmering stripes dancing in the light, for a beautiful visual display.
Looking at the rear camera, the sleek and pill-shaped design creates a polished look and adds to the modern style of the smartphone. Plus, the lenses have a gold-colored ring design, which adds elegance to the camera’s appearance. The front camera features a hole punch design offering a widescreen display. This is convenient because you’ll have full visuals for viewing documents, watching films, playing games, editing photos, and making short videos. On the left side of realme C67 are the dual micro SIM and micro SD card trays. On the right side are the volume button and the fingerprint scanner. It also has a dual microphone and dual stereo speakers at the top and bottom part of the smartphone. At the bottom are the USB Type-C charging port and 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Realme C67 has an IP54 rating, which I was able to test out. Whether subjected to a sudden splash of water or being in a dusty environment, this smartphone can still deliver reliable performance. Just remember that while the IP54 rating indicates a certain water level resistance, this smartphone is not fully waterproof. It can only handle limited water exposure, so no jumping into the pool or swimming under the sea with this phone.

HARDWARE With the Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 at its core, the realme C67 is an ideal companion for everyday activities, as demonstrated by its Geekbench 6 scores. With a singlecore score of 473 and a multi-core score of 1555, this smartphone can deliver versatile performance despite being an entry-level smartphone. Testing its CPU capabilities, it seamlessly handled multitasking activities, such as capturing moments, browsing social media, and even editing short videos. Its GPU scored 379, which is sufficient for multitasking and some light gaming. The realme C67 packs a substantial 5000mAh battery power, which allowed
me to seamlessly perform multiple tasks and enjoy some entertainment throughout the day. Running on the latest Android 14 operating system delivers convenient features, such as having the latest software updates, more security features, customizable themes, and wallpapers. As for enhancing user interaction, the realme UI T edition optimizes the device’s interface for a smooth and user-friendly experience, allowing me to navigate and use the smartphone effortlessly.
USER EXPERIENCE The realme C67 delivers good performance in standard rear camera photography, especially under well-lit
conditions. Featuring a 12MP camera and 3x-in sensor zoom, it holds up well, particularly for an entry-level device. Though the 3x-in sensor zoom needs some improvement to produce sharp images, this smartphone shines when used for wide-shot photography, producing photos that are perfect for Instagram. Additionally, the realme C67 offers a familiar camera feature – Street Mode, available in the rear camera settings. In Street Mode, you have the option to capture photos with various filters integrated into the system, adding a creative touch to your photography experience. For selfie enthusiasts, the realme C67 has an 8MP front camera that is capable of capturing smooth quality selfies with a charming bokeh effect on the background. Exploring the videography capabilities of the realme C67, its rear camera supports video recording from 720p to 1080p that runs in 30fps, providing a standard high quality for casual videos. However, do note that the videos may come with a subtle grainy quality, depending on specific lighting conditions. Yet, the recorded videos showcased some good and smooth quality results in well-

lit settings. The rear camera features Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) for clear video recording. It can handle some small movements while effectively maintaining good video quality. However, larger motions may lead to some blurriness. The front camera performs well in recording at 1080p with a 30fps frame rate. The embedded sensors automatically make necessary adjustments without compromising video quality. It delivers smooth and excellent-quality selfie videos in well-lit environments. In the gaming and entertainment realm, the realme C67 can provide a smooth and high-quality gaming experience for casual games such as Sims FreePlay and Snack Bar. However, mobile gaming enthusiasts might find it falls short of meeting their gaming expectations, although Mobile Legends: Bang Bang can be played with high graphics and frame rate.

In the front camera’s hole punch design is the Mini Capsule 2.0 that appears when notifications come in, like those from calendar and weather. Also, it adds some functionality as a music playback control with a simple press. Despite the redundancy of this feature, given the existing lock screen controls, it is convenient when the smartphone is active. This way, switching between music tracks is effortless without the need to access the notifications bar. Embodying a slim design, the realme C67 is built to last through the day, thanks to its 5000mAh battery. Even with activities like playing casual games, capturing photos and videos, and playing some music, this smartphone is able to manage heat efficiently. Adding to its convenience, the realme C67 features quick charging capability courtesy of the 33W SUPERVOOC charger. It offers extensive storage with its 256GB capacity, expandable up to 2TB. An efficient 8GB RAM seamlessly supports realme C67’s performance and updated software.

WORLD’S FIRST WIRELESS TRANSPARENT OLED TV L

The LG SIGNATURE OLED T is a true technological marvel, combining a transparent 4K OLED screen and LG’s wireless video and audio transmission technology to transform the screen experience in ways that have never been possible before. The OLED T unlocks a February 2024
world of near-limitless potential, giving users the unprecedented freedom to meticulously curate their living spaces. This is complemented by the class-leading picture quality and performance of LG OLED, powered by the new α (Alpha) 11 AI processor. A genuine game changer, LG’s transparent OLED is the winner of five CES 2024 Innovation Awards, including a Best of Innovation honor.
46
LG SIGNATURE OLED T liberates users from a dominant black screen that competes with the décor in their home. Maintaining its 77-inch screen size, OLED T and its innovative transparent display seamlessly harmonizes with its environment. Practically invisible when turned off, it blends into the environment and frees users from the long-standing problem of what to do with the ‘big black
screen.’ The TV’s beautiful see-through screen also helps to make one’s space feel larger, providing a sense of openness. The unique LG OLED T brings with it many new possibilities, from where it can be placed in the room, to the kinds of user experiences that LG can now deliver. Its transparent OLED screen removes the usual constraints that come with conventional TVs. No longer does the TV have to be placed against the wall. Instead, place the OLED T in the middle of the room to become a divider or prop it against the window without blocking the view outside. The included Zero Connect Box, which leverages LG’s cutting-edge wireless transmission technology to send 4K images and sound to the OLED T, also enables users to place their TV anywhere, regardless of where the electrical outlets are located in the room. With no cables between the Zero Connect Box and the OLED T, users can enjoy a clean, cable-free viewing environment.
What’s more, the modular design of the LG OLED T facilitates diverse installation methods. The OLED T comes in standalone, against-the-wall, or wall-mount options. Customers can further customize by adding standing or floating shelves on either or both sides of the screen to best suit their unique tastes and preferences. LG’s transparent OLED lets owners discover new forms of entertainment and use via its dual viewing experiences: transparent and opaque. The OLED T becomes a transparent digital canvas for showcasing artwork, videos, or photos with the Always-On-Display (AOD) feature. Content displayed on the transparent screen appears to float in the air, yet simultaneously fuses with the surrounding space to create a compelling and atmospheric visual effect. Another option is the T-Bar feature that offers a helpful info-ticker running along the lower part of the screen. The T-Bar displays news alerts, weather updates, or the title of songs being played while the rest of the screen presents a clear, unobstructed view of the space behind it.
47
For viewing in picture-perfect OLED, simply click a button to raise the contrast screen. In this way, users can instantly switch to take full advantage of LG OLED’s enhanced picture quality through the new α (Alpha) 11 AI processor with 4-times greater AI performance. This provides a 70 percent improvement in graphic performance and a 30 percent faster processing speed compared to its predecessor. OLED T offers the best of both transparent and vibrant-color screen experiences with just a click of a button. “An incredible feat of consumer-driven innovation, LG SIGNATURE OLED T offers brand-new screen experiences plus the picture quality and performance of our award-winning OLED technology,” said Park Hyoung-sei, president of the LG Home Entertainment Company. “LG’s transparent OLED gives customers greater freedom to curate their living spaces, completely redefining what’s possible and pointing the way to an exciting future for the television industry.”

The upright A-pillars and flat clamshell bonnet improve visibility through the front windshield, while the dipped lines of the driver and passenger windows extend visibility from the side. The 5-door model boasts chrome accents on the front grille, a distinctive feature that accentuates the grille’s unique 5-slot design. Additionally, features such as the signature round headlamps and 15inch dark-metallic alloy wheels further enhance the overall robust exterior styling. INTERIOR The theme of practicality and functionality extends seamlessly to the interior. Meticulously designed to balance aesthetics and functionality, the sleek black interior avoids unnecessary colors or decorations to minimize distractions, allowing the driver to focus on navigating the vehicle. Horizontal lines on the instrument panel and vertical lines in the meter cluster and center console panels assist the driver in gauging the vehicle’s angle, especially in challenging terrains such as rough or mountainous terrains. The rear seat has undergone enhancements, featuring thicker seat cushions to provide better seating posture and comfortably accommodate two adults. Positioned directly above the rear passengers, the rear seat lamp ensures improved lighting, while the rear seat power window switches are conveniently located in both the rear doors and the front console box for easy control from both rows. ccording to an article entitled “So Fight the Brave,” which appeared in the Sunday Times Magazine on March 3, 1946, writer TD Agcaoili narrates that when General Guillermo Nakar was detained at Fort Santiago, he regularly used the thumbs-up gesture to signal that “everything was okay, keep your chin up, and keep on fighting,” thus uplifting the spirit of the inmates.
General Nakar, Quezon, is home not only to some of the most challenging terrains in the country; its unpredictable weather can render the jungle trail unpassable in the blink of an eye. MAJOR NLEX PROJECTS FOR 2024
A
fter the successful opening of the NLEX Connector Caloocan to Magsaysay Section, a game changer infrastructure that shortened travel time from C3 Caloocan to Magsaysay Blvd in Manila to just eight minutes, NLEX Corporation pledges to continue implementing infrastructure development and enhancement projects this year that will expand the capacity of its roads. “This 2024, we intend to embark on three major infrastructure projects and a series of enhancement programs on our assets, which are our roads and our systems, all for the improved travel experience of our motorists at NLEX, SCTEX and NLEX Connector,” said NLEX Corporation president and general manager J. Luigi Bautista. February 2024
CANDABA 3RD VIADUCT A major infrastructure project is the completion of the Candaba 3rd Viaduct scheduled for November 2024. Now 40% complete, this five-kilometer viaduct is being built in the middle of the two existing bridges that connect the towns of Pulilan, Bulacan, and Apalit, Pampanga. Once completed, the Candaba Viaduct will be widened to three lanes with inner and outer shoulders in each direction, therefore enhancing motorists’ safety and mobility.
Highway in Novaliches is set to begin construction by the second quarter of 2024. The construction of this new expressway section will be welcome news for NLEX commuters who currently face daily traffic gridlock in the congested portions of Mindanao Avenue. Eventually, this section will be integrated into the future NLEX expansion to C5/C.P. Garcia near Katipunan Avenue, resulting in an interconnected tollway network that will be accessible to the west, east, north, and south sides of Metro Manila.
NLEX C5 LINK
SCTEX SPUR EXPANSION
Another vital project of the tollway company is the NLEX C5-Link. The first two kilometers of the project between the Mindanao Avenue toll plaza to Quirino
The third major project is the muchneeded expansion of NLEX San Fernando to SCTEX Spur in Mabalacat, Pampanga, which is targeted to start in

the second quarter of this year. When finished, the expressway road capacity of the stretch from San Fernando to SCTEX Spur in Pampanga will be expanded from the existing 2x2 lanes to 3x3 lanes in each direction giving motorists a faster, more seamless travel. The project also includes the installation of roadway lighting from NLEX San Fernando all the way to Sta. Ines, Mabalacat, in Pampanga for added safety and the expansion of the Angeles Interchange to accommodate the increase in volume of vehicles in the area. OTHER PROJECTS Recently, NLEX also signed a Memorandum of Agreement with DPWH and the TRB to build the Sto. Tomas Interchange between San Simon and San Fernando in Pampanga, which will provide direct access to Santo Tomas and nearby towns. This interchange will also ease congestion leading to San Fernando, by providing an additional entry point to the province. As part of the company’s traffic decongestion program, the new F. Raymundo Exit in Brgy, Pandayan, Meycauayan Northbound and the additional lane at the Meycauayan Northbound Exit ramp were recently opened to ease the recurrent traffic in the area especially during peak hours and holidays. The new exit provides an additional and alternative route going to the eastern portion of the City of Meycauayan and Marilao while the additional lane in Meycauayan Northbound Exit ramp serves as the new dedicated lane for Malhacan-bound vehicles while the leftmost and middle lanes are assigned for those going to Iba/Camalig, providing additional space for the high volume of trucks going to the industrial areas.
NLEX Corporation will likewise invest in various system enhancement programs and major upgrades in traffic management systems. The NLEX traffic control center, which houses a central traffic management system, will undergo renovation this year. The center integrates technologies for traffic monitoring and communication to ensure prompt action for the safety and convenience of motorists. It is run 24/7 by trained personnel who monitor traffic flow, and deploy patrol crews and emergency response teams during incidents. Through the years, NLEX Corporation has been committed to the safety and convenience of its motorists, and continuously explores ways to elevate every travel experience on its expressways. In fact, aside from the NLEX Connector, several projects were fast-tracked last year for the motorists to enjoy unhampered movement on its expressways. These include the road raising of the 200-meter portion of San Simon area under the Tulaoc Bridge, and substructure strengthening works at the SCTEX Pasig Potrero Bridge.
antennas were installed to enhance the processing of lane transactions. Additional speed cameras were installed for a more effective enforcement of traffic regulations.
A substantial toll and traffic systems upgrade was also implemented last year. Servers were upgraded and new radio frequency identification (RFID)
NLEX Corporation is a subsidiary of the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC), the toll road arm of the Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC).
“We find ways to meet the demands of our motorists regardless of how challenging things are. More than proactiveness, it is important that expressway operators are also willing to go the extra mile to anticipate and deliver the needs of expressway users,” Bautista said.
The tollway company will also continue its heavy maintenance program, a comprehensive pavement maintenance and repair works done annually to preserve the quality of road assets and ensure its safe condition.

he game Tekken brings me back to a time when fighting games were transitioning into 3D. This was 30 years ago when Virtua Fighter sought to add the third dimension into fighting video games as part of an ambitious step forward for the genre. The Tekken series has gone through many installments and has been at the forefront of fighting games ever since, although almost a decade has gone by since the release of Tekken 7 in 2015. The storylines and characters made each game memorable in their own way, but can the latest iteration of the Tekken franchise bring in new players while satisfying the old guard?
While the games usually center on the King of Iron Fist Tournament and the perspectives of each character and what happens if they win it, this installment of Tekken focuses on a familiar storyline within the Tekken series, involving infighting among Kazuya Mishima and his son Jin Kazama. Early on in the series, Kazuya Mishima served as the protagonist of the game, while Jin Kazama became the protagonist of the series starting with Tekken 3. Both are associated with the Mishima Zaibatsu, who are also the main sponsors of the King of Iron First Tournament. The story picks up as Kazuya Mishima announces a new King of Iron First Tournament amidst destruction from fighting between Kazuya and Jin’s factions. This tournament includes representatives from various nations. Kazuya also announces that the winner will be rewarded, while the losers will face destruction.

Gaming
While the gameplay is the same Tekken gameplay you know and love (and also the first fighting game to use Unreal Engine 5), there are new characters and elements in the game. Fighting games tend to reward quick reaction times, and this is no different in Tekken 8, although there are now some new systems such as the Heat state. Heat makes the game reward offense over defense, so you’ll have to be more aggressive than your opponent to make full use of it. In addition, Heat also lasts for ten seconds and changes the nature of your moveset. It allows you to do things such as a heavy guard break or a dash cancel. What makes Heat interesting is that you can recover health when guarding against Heat or normal heavy attacks, which ironically makes the intricate balance between offense and defense even more important. The Tornado effect allows you to flip opponents during juggles, making characters like Eddy Gordo (or anyone who knows how to juggle characters) even more overpowered.
February 2024
The environment is more important now than in previous games—you can now do Hard Wall Breaks, Hard Floor Breaks, Wall Blasts, Wall Bound, and Floor Blast, which allows you to use the environment to your advantage. Floor Blasts can make juggles even more dangerous as it sends an opponent back up into the air, so if you’re a juggling genius, you can potentially defeat opponents through this method alone.
74
JACK-8
Several new characters also come into the game—Angel Jin, who is only playable in The Dark Awakens Story Mode; Azucena Milagros Ortiz Castillo, a Peruvian mixed martial artist; Jack-8, a new G Corporation Jack model; Reina, a mysterious girl who goes to Mishima Polytechnical School; and Victor Chevalier, a United Nations super-spy who is of a royal French knight lineage. Other fan favorites and long-time franchise staples return, such as Bryan Fury, Hwoarang, Xiaoyu, Marshall Law, Eddy Gordo (as DLC), Yoshimitsu, Nina Williams, and Paul Phoenix.
AZUCENA MILAGROS ORTIZ CASTILLO
After nine years between releases, the Tekken franchise remains strong. It is apparent that the franchise has not lost its luster despite the lack of an arcade release. Bandai Namco once again proves that fighting games are its bread and butter, and Tekken 8 is a worthy addition to any gamer’s collection—especially if you’ve been putting almost 30 years into the franchise like I have.

CONSUMER TRENDS FOR 2024 Visa study sees generally positive financial outlook

isa, a world leader in digital payments, has released its latest Green Shoots Radar study, a quarterly report tracking consumer sentiments across financial services, commerce, travel, and more. The latest data found that 38% of Filipino respondents have attended concerts over the past 12 months, both locally or overseas, coming in the top five in Asia Pacific right after India (45%), Vietnam (41%), and Indonesia (40%).
Consumers sentiment will remain positive in the Philippines Four out of 10 consumers surveyed in Asia Pacific believe their domestic outlook will improve in a year. 50% of Filipino consumers who were surveyed have a positive outlook, compared to consumers in Vietnam (75%) and Indonesia (64%). Nearly half (47%) of surveyed consumers in the region believe now is a good time to buy big household items such as furniture, household appliances and electronic gadgets, with the Philippines slightly ahead at 56%.
Interestingly, among these Filipino respondents who have traveled overseas to attend a music concert, 37% of them planned a trip specifically to attend this event. South Korea and Singapore emerged as the top destinations for these concert-goers.
Buying a new car is the most common personal life event experienced across most markets in Asia Pacific, with 9% of Filipino consumers reporting so. Respondents also intend to spend more in the region in the next year, with half of Asia Pacific respondents planning to spend more, with those in the Philippines ranking higher than the regional average at 59%.
The study outlines three key trends for 2024:
TREND 1
TREND 3
Consumers will continue to travel locally and abroad to attend live music concerts in 2024
Consumers will increase their personal savings Despite intending to spend more, many consumers surveyed are also setting aside more for savings. In the Philippines, 38% of respondents expect to put more effort into personal savings — slightly higher than the Asia Pacific regional average of 36% — and save up to 9% of their monthly income. Jeff Navarro, Visa’s country manager for the Philippines, said, “The resurgence in travel and notably for live music events is a positive trend. Cards play a vital role in the consumer crossborder journey, providing a safe and secure way to purchase tickets with a seamless contactless payment experience. Consumers can also buy event merchandise and support their travel and shopping needs with cards. At Visa, our purpose is to uplift everyone, everywhere, and we seek to remain salient in consumers’ lives — journeying with them through different life stages and events with relevant products and solutions.”
The post-pandemic period has seen a resurgence in in-person live events, with people increasingly traveling to attend them. This trend is expected to persist in 2024, driven by popular acts performing in the region. Live music concerts are the most popular event type, followed by theatre/ music shows and sporting events.

s one of the oldest financial institutions, pawnshops have historically been a last resort for individuals in dire straits, offering immediate cash in exchange for valuable items. But recently, something has shifted in how people view and use pawnshops. This change is evident in their diverse clientele, from antique collectors and bargain hunters to small-business owners and individuals seeking quick cash flow. The modern customer understands the pawnshop not as a symbol of desperation but as a tool for financial management.
:
So, what’s driving this change in perception? And how is the pawning industry rebranding itself as a savvy financial solution?
AN ONLINE PAWNSHOP February 2024
78
THE HISTORY OF PAWNSHOPS Pawnshops can be traced back thousands of years, with evidence of their existence in ancient China, Greece, and Rome. In the Philippines, pawnshops have been a part of the financial landscape since the 19th century, with Spain introducing the concept to Filipinos. Despite their long history and widespread use, pawnshops have often been stigmatized as a last resort for the desperate and financially struggling. This negative reputation can be attributed to several factors, including high interest rates, shady business practices, and the perception that pawnshops primarily cater to low-income individuals.
SHEDDING THE STIGMA In recent years, however, there has been a noticeable shift in how people view and use pawnshops. Thanks to better, more customerfriendly regulations, many pawnshops now offer fairer deals to customers so that they get more cash for their items. With the growing understanding of their economic value, pawnshops are now viewed as a practical solution to short-term financial needs. Choosing to pawn items can have several advantages compared to other financial options. Pawnshops are more accessible. The process is fast and efficient, often providing instant cash to the customer. The consequences of failure to repay are not severe; if a loan is not repaid, the pawnshop keeps and sells the item without impacting the customer’s credit record. Furthermore, the cost of borrowing from pawnshops can sometimes be lower than that of bank overdraft fees, payday loans, and the fees of credit cards and “buy now, pay later” apps. It’s no wonder that pawnshops have become a popular choice among many — particularly entrepreneurs. By allowing them access to capital quickly without going through the lengthy process of securing a traditional bank loan, pawnshops have opened up opportunities for growth and expansion that may not have been possible otherwise.
THE FUTURE OF PAWNING As the needs and expectations of consumers continue to change, so do businesses need to evolve. Pawnshops are no exception, with some embracing technology and modernizing their business practices to serve customers better. PawnHero, the first online pawnshop in the Philippines, is a prime example of this evolution. With PawnHero, Filipinos no longer have to leave the comfort of their homes to pawn items. They can simply upload a photo and description of their item on PawnHero’s website or app, receive an initial estimate, and have the item picked up for appraisal and storage. Customers also have the option to pay interest and extend loans online, making it more convenient than ever to use pawnshops as a financial solution. “At PawnHero, we aim to reshape the landscape of pawning in the Philippines,” says Dr. Iris Pastor, COO at PawnHero. “By taking pawning online, we’re providing a fair and transparent service that’s easily accessible to everyone, breaking down traditional barriers and delivering a higher level of convenience to our customers.” With the stigma surrounding pawnshops slowly dissipating and the industry continuously evolving, it’s safe to say this age-old institute is becoming a more accepted and practical financial solution. Whether for emergency cash needs or short-term financing, pawnshops are proving to be a convenient choice for individuals seeking financial stability. So the next time you need quick access to money, consider pawning – it may just be your smartest move yet.
PawnHero (PawnHero.ph) is the first online pawnshop in the Philippines and is regulated by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Through the use of advanced technology, PawnHero is able to provide instant cash loans to its customers in a hassle-free and discreet manner.

ASIA PACIFIC CYBERSECURITY PREDICTIONS 2024 Palo Alto Networks, the global cybersecurity leader, has recently released its 2024 cybersecurity predictions for Asia Pacific alongside 5 key insights from industry leaders to help organizations ensure a secure future. February 2024

023 saw organizations witness unprecedented levels of cybercrime. Palo Alto Networks’ State of Cybersecurity Report found that the Philippines experienced the highest number of disruptive attacks in Southeast Asia, with 29% of local organizations experiencing a 50% or more increase in incidents. Furthermore, the firm also received the most number of calls to its incident response team ever in October 2023. Cybercriminals have used ransomware to target critical infrastructures and found novel techniques to exploit emerging technologies like generative AI to ill-effect. Predicting cybersecurity trends for 2024 will be especially important if organizations want to get ahead of modern cyberattackers. With stakes higher than ever, organizations need to take a holistic approach – accounting for macroeconomic factors, emerging technologies, and cloud risks among others.
capabilities in most modern organizations. They use an average of 31.58 disparate security tools to protect their highly interconnected and innovative environments. The lack of correlation and the level of noise generated by these tools creates immense visibility gaps and dampens their ability for detection and response.”
Ian Lim, regional chief security officer of Palo Alto Networks, said, “In 2023, we’ve seen mature organizations, who invest heavily in cybersecurity, still falling victim to debilitating cyberattacks. This is due to the tenacity and ingenuity of attackers who exploit cyber hygiene issues or find novel ways to compromise legacy defenses. Another key reason for these breaches lies in the complexity of security
He added, “Going into 2024, highly motivated cybercriminals, nation-state attackers, and hacktivists will continue to innovate, expand, and exploit – not much we can do to slow that down. However, we could and should definitely address the complexity of our security capabilities with AI to make them more effective and cost-efficient.”
Here are the five cybersecurity trends to watch out for in 2024:
01
Hacktivism: the modern crusade Previously, a high level of technical expertise was necessary, but the cybercrime-as-a-service model has lowered this threshold. Now, it only takes an extremely motivated activist with sufficient funds. Tumultuous geopolitical climate will provide opportunities for hacktivists to gain notoriety for their group and sympathy for their cause. Most hacktivist activity is via Distributed-Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks. For example, during the G20 Summit in India, more than 30 groups of hacktivists from neighboring countries attacked more than 600 websites of government and private entities through DDoS attacks, defacements, and data leaks.
2023 saw numerous instances of broadcast events being disrupted by climate activists. This year, this protest could take the shape of a cyber-first campaign. With significant events like the Olympics, the Euros, and regional elections coming up, hacktivists will look to further their cause to audiences in the millions.
In 2024, organizations should evaluate their risk profile according to the evolving threat landscape and ensure coverage not only for financially motivated attacks but also for hacktivism and nation-state attacks.

02
AI’s role in cybersecurity will evolve, for good and bad like deepfake and voice technology to scam banks out of millions. Companies adopting Gen AI must be wary of the vulnerabilities of model poisoning, data leakage, prompt injection attacks, etc. Attackers will continue to exploit innovation gaps with the increased use of Gen AI for legitimate use cases.
Since ChatGPT’s launch in October 2022, there have been concerns worldwide regarding its potential to democratize cybercrime. Despite having guardrails to prevent malicious applications, a few creative prompts can get ChatGPT to generate near-flawless phishing emails that sound “weirdly human” at an immense scale. We’ve seen attackers use Gen AI in novel ways
03
Operational technology will remain the low-hanging fruit
Operational Technology is the heart of any industrial organization. As the primary generator of revenue, OT systems must have a high level of cyber maturity.
February 2024
Hence, one of the AI Cybersecurity trends we expect to see in 2024 is the maturation of how we protect enterpriselevel use of Gen AI. This involves making sure that security controls, vulnerability management, and threat monitoring activities are embedded throughout the entire lifecycle of AI development projects. Gen AI will further embed itself into cybersecurity capabilities. Its ability to summarize, weed through noise, and give concise summaries of security events is far greater than a human analyst’s (especially at the scale a modern SOC operates). With LLMs getting better by the day, we are bound to see more sophisticated applications that move beyond just being a clever and occasionally hallucinating chatbot.
However, many organizations still believe OT environments are protected by an air gap, whereas IT/OT convergence has resulted in OT being more connected than ever to IT and also, in many cases, to the cloud. This has expanded the attack surface and greatly increased the risk to OT networks, without the investment in cyber controls. A breach of OT systems can not only result in lost revenue but also, potentially, injuries or loss of life. A cyber secure OT environment is also a safe and reliable OT environment. A Zero Trust architecture will protect the most critical OT systems from threats while allowing organizations to focus on their digital transformation. 2024 will see organizations invest in OT cyber security maturity to protect their most important business systems and manage the increased risk to an acceptable level.
82
04
Consolidation to enable the next frontier in cybersecurity Organizations with disparate security tools that are not well integrated have a harder time deploying automation and orchestration. This is a major setback in reducing the mean time to detect and the mean time to respond. In addition to the lackluster threat response, organizations with siloed solutions are having a hard time securing their rapid digital transformation initiatives. Alongside macroeconomic headwinds and workforce challenges, enterprises are looking to consolidate their vendor spread and reduce complexities. Put simply, it is way easier to manage the cybersecurity stack if there is one point of contact when a crisis inevitably strikes. Over the long term, it reduces costs and yields better results. This is thanks to the increased visibility and seamless integration that comes with a unified security offering. More organizations are waking up to these benefits and thus 2024 will see customers focus on reducing complexities and turning to consolidated cybersecurity stacks.
Unit 42’s Cloud Threat Report (Volume 7) found that on average, security teams take approximately 6 days to resolve a security alert, with 60% of organizations taking longer than 4 days. In a threat landscape where attackers only require a few hours to find and exploit vulnerabilities, 4-6 days is just way too long.
05
Securing multi and hybrid cloud will be a focus cybersecurity strategy to adopt cloud security. Early adopters of the cloud typically start with a single hyperscaler. Naturally, the single cloud model would adopt native security tools from their chosen Cloud Service Provider (CSP). Over time they experience issues and outages that can only be addressed by adopting a multi or hybrid cloud strategy. This multicloud journey would most likely necessitate a review of their existing cloud security paradigm as native CSP security tools do not seamlessly translate to different CSPs. In 2024, organizations that have to contend with multi or hybrid cloud projects will move to establishing a more unified approach to security when dealing with more than one cloud provider. Rationalizing cloud security tools across the entire development lifecycle will also be a focus as this provides much higher visibility, correlation, and security monitoring.
Per the State of Cybersecurity survey, APAC organizations are moving large chunks of their infrastructure to the cloud, with 44% adjusting their

INSIDER THREATS Deliberate malicious actions by employees bring cybersecurity risks February 2024
84
C
yber incidents caused by “human factors” are usually attributed to occasional employee errors, but one more important element is often overlooked: deliberate malicious behavior by staff. Corroborating this fact, a new Kaspersky study found that in the past two years, 77% of companies around the world have faced cyber incidents, 1/5 of which were caused by deliberate malicious behavior by employees.
A variety of elements can be found when examining the “human factor” that can negatively affect the running of a business, ranging from ordinary employee mistakes to the misallocation of budget by decision-makers. But one of the most important factors that is often overlooked is malicious actions by staff. This crucial finding was revealed in a recent Kaspersky study showing that, in the last two years, 20% of companies worldwide suffered cyber incidents due to malicious behavior for personal gain exhibited by employees.
A recent case occurring at the Tesla company illustrates the dangers insider threats pose to business. Two of Tesla’s ex-employees leaked the names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of 75,735 current and former employees to a German newspaper. Maine regulators were informed of the incident in a data breach notification on August 18, after the company learned of the breach on May 10 from German news outlet Handelsblatt, and conducted an internal investigation.
Insider threats: what you need to know What are insider threats?
There are two main types of insider threats: unintentional and intentional. Unintentional, or accidental threats are employees’ mistakes such as falling for phishing and other social engineering methods, or sending sensitive and confidential information to the wrong person, etc.
In contrast, intentional threats are perpetrated by malicious insiders who deliberately hack into their employer’s systems. They usually do so for financial gain from the sale of sensitive data or as an act of revenge. Malicious insiders aim to disrupt or stop an organization’s regular business operations, expose IT weaknesses, and obtain confidential information.
85
February 2024
Cyber Security
Insiders with malicious intentions are the most dangerous of all employees who can provoke cyber incidents. Threats posed by their actions are complicated by several factors: • Insiders have specific knowledge of an organization’s infrastructure and processes, including understanding of the information security tools used. • They are already inside the company’s network, and do not need to penetrate the perimeter from outside via phishing, firewall attacks, etc. • They have colleagues and friends within the organization, so it’s much easier for them to use social engineering. • Insiders with malicious intentions are highly motivated to harm their organization.
What are the reasons for insider malicious actions?
One of the main reasons for employees to commit malicious actions against an employer is financial gain. Often it means stealing sensitive information with the intention of selling it to a third party like competitors, or even auctioning it on the dark web where cybercriminals buy data to attack businesses. When employees have been fired, malicious behavior might take place out of revenge. This can be conducted even through connections with current staff, but the worst-case scenario occurs if they still
February 2024
can log into their work account remotely because the organization hasn’t removed their ability to access its systems as soon as the employee left the company. Employees can also act maliciously when they are unhappy with their job or “to get even” with an employer who didn’t give them an expected raise or a promotion, for instance. Another interesting type of malicious action occurs when one or more insiders collaborate with an
86
external actor to compromise an organization. These incidents frequently involve cybercriminals recruiting one or more insiders to carry out different kinds of attacks. There may also be cases in which third parties, such as competitors or other interested parties, collaborate with staff to obtain the company’s sensitive data. “Malicious actors can be discovered anywhere — in huge enterprises or small businesses, you never know. That’s why businesses should build an up to date, resilient, transparent IT-security
system, uniting effective security solutions, smart security protocols and training programs for both IT and non-IT staff to safeguard against this threat. Additionally, it’s crucial to implement products and solutions that will protect the organization’s infrastructure. For example, our Kaspersky Endpoint Detection and Response Optimum contains Advanced Anomaly Control which helps detect and prevent suspicious and potentially dangerous activities, both by an insider working in a company or an actor outside the organization,” comments Alexey Vovk, head of information security at Kaspersky.
To combat malicious insider threats, Kaspersky recommends: Controlling and limiting the use of personal devices and third-party applications and services. Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business and Kaspersky Endpoint Security Cloud offer Application, Web and Device controls which limit the use of unsolicited apps, websites and peripherals, significantly reducing infection risks even in cases where employees use devices, applications or services that are not sanctioned by the company to transfer data.
Implementing cybersecurity training to raise awareness among employees and to prevent intentional information security policy violations. To boost security awareness among general employees, educate them with the Kaspersky Automated Security Awareness Platform training program, which teaches safe internet behavior.
Investing in relevant training programs for IT security specialists. Kaspersky Cybersecurity for IT Online training helps build up simple yet effective IT security-related best practices and simple incident response scenarios for generalist IT admins, while Kaspersky Expert Training equips your security team with the latest knowledge and skills in threat management and mitigation.
Implementing products that allow an administrator’s rights to be limited only to those options that are really needed for work. Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business offers role-based access to Kaspersky Security Center management console items, so not all administrators require full control over security functions.
The Advanced Anomaly Control feature within Kaspersky Endpoint Security for Business Advanced, Kaspersky Total Security for Business and Kaspersky Endpoint Detection and Response Optimum helps prevent potentially dangerous activities by the employee or in case an attacker has seized control of the system.
Kaspersky Security for Internet Gateway also possesses content filtering, to prevent unsolicited data transmission regardless of its type, platform protection status, or user behavior at the endpoints inside the network.

WORKSPACE TRANSFORMATIO According to a new Cisco Asia Pacific study, most employees believe that offices are no longer conducive to productivity
W
hile most employees in the Philippines are willing to return to the office at least a few times a week, a new Cisco study found that more than half of employees believe that offices no longer fit their purpose. The study, which examines employee and employer attitudes about current workspaces, revealed that workspace design, layout and technology have not kept pace with changing employee expectations. Titled “From Mandate to Magnet: The Race to Reimagine Workplaces and Workspaces for a Hybrid Future,” the study found that 93% of companies in the Philippines have mandated a full or partial return to the office with productivity, team communication, and leadership pressure as key drivers. Contrary to the popular belief that most workers are reluctant to go back to the office, eight out of 10 (80%) employees in the Philippines responded positively to their organization’s mandate to return to the office, and 89% of employee respondents expressed a desire to return to the office at least a few times per week. “Our study reveals that employees in the Philippines have embraced hybrid work and are willing to return to the office more often, but with a caveat, workspaces must adapt to their evolving needs and expectations,” said Zaza Soriano-Nicart, managing director, Cisco Philippines. “In the era of hybrid work, employers need to reimagine their workspaces as a hub for collaboration and connect people in new ways with the right connectivity, collaboration tools, and culture.” Despite the positive reception to the office return, employees’ motives for in-office work have significantly evolved. The main reason for their return is not individual work but rather to collaborate (82%), ideate and brainstorm with colleagues (65%), and foster a sense of belonging (45%). This shift signifies a change in employee expectations and needs for their workspaces.

Workspaces do not reflect changing employee needs Across the Philippines, 37% of employees believe that their office is not fully fit for purpose to enable them to do their best work. In fact, when referring to office layouts and seating arrangements, 73% of employees feel these are not conducive to collaboration and brainstorming purposes. While there is a growing emphasis on collaboration, 78% of employers surveyed still allocate at least half of their offices to individual workspaces. The study further highlights that workspaces are not ready for this new way of working. Employees feel that individual workstations (47%), large (55%) and small (69%) meeting rooms are ineffective at boosting productivity in the office, or only do so moderately at best. Technology infrastructure and integration is also an area of concern. Among employers who find meeting rooms ineffective in boosting in-office productivity, the main reasons are inconsistency in the experience for remote and in-office participants (50%), lack of inclusive audio and video endpoints (46%), poor quality of audio-visual experience (43%) and insufficient audio and video endpoints (29%). On average, just over half (61%) of the meeting rooms across organizations are equipped with video and audio capabilities. On a positive note, the study reveals that organizations are making progress to transform their office spaces. Eight out of 10 employers have already made changes post-pandemic, and 89% plan to do so in the next two years. The main drivers of transformation include adapting to technological advancements (63%), meeting changing employee expectations for workspaces (54%), and better enabling hybrid work (42%). “While employers are making progress in deploying collaborative technologies to support hybrid work, significant work remains to simplify the experience to better enable employees to more fully utilize these tools and technologies,” said Nicart. “Apart from providing access to technologies like smart meeting assistants, for example, employers need to make sure that their people are given appropriate training and support so they can be proficient in these technologies.” The study is based on a double-blind survey of 9,200 full-time employees and 1,650 employers surveyed in November 2023. Respondents are from seven Asia Pacific markets, including Australia, Hong Kong, India, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, and South Korea.

T.I.P. Quezon City alumni Joanna Keith Ildefonso, Orwell Orit, Liezl February 2024
Lalaine Patrimonio, and Keanu Readova developed their project called “HandMATE,” which recently won “Best Project of the Year” at the 2023 BPI-DOST Innovation Awards. Collectively known as “RAD Tech,” the team worked with their adviser ECE faculty member Engr. John Joel Martinez to create a glove-like device made of light materials that uses a

network of cost-effective internetbased technologies to facilitate the therapy of patients. “The HandMATE has been specifically designed to address the extended healing period associated with hand rehabilitation, a process influenced by limited blood circulation,” the team wrote in the abstract of their study.
“By leveraging neuroplasticity, it aims to reestablish connections between nerve cells, restore lost motor skills, and meticulously monitor the healing progress, thereby contributing to an enhanced quality of life for post-stroke patients,” they added. Neuroplasticity refers to the ability of our nervous system to change its activity in response to intrinsic or extrinsic stimuli by reorganizing its structure, functions, or connections after a stroke or other types of traumatic brain injuries, according to the National Library of Medicine. Engr. Martinez said his students worked on the “HandMATE” project for one and a half years. They also tested the prototype “numerous times with satisfactory results,” which notably became their competitive edge.
“This device stands out for its capacity to facilitate both passive and active exercises, prioritizing rehabilitation, integrating IoT (internet of things)-based control and data retention functionalities, and providing an affordable solution,” team RAD Tech noted.
The team accepted their award in a ceremony organized by the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) Foundation and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Science Education Institute last December 11, 2023, at the Makati Diamond Residences.

Offering niche programs initially met with skepticism, but through strong industry partnerships, we not only weathered the storm of criticism but emerged triumphant. Over the past two decades, iACADEMY’s success has been shaped by these key elements; our commitment to innovation, strategic partnerships, and the invaluable support of our media partners. Today, we stand at the forefront of education, fostering an environment where creativity, technology, and knowledge converge to shape the future. Our goal now extends beyond achieving a 96% job placement rate. We aspire to make a global impact, preparing students not just for local success but for a world where borders are blurred, and opportunities are limitless.” February 2024

WIFI MESH 6 TECH FROM HOME As they fully embrace a completely digital lifestyle, more Filipinos can now enjoy Fiber-fast speeds and wider WiFi coverage with the WiFi 6 -powered TP-Link Deco X55 WiFi Mesh System
A
new year has come, bringing new innovations that help the world expand and evolve through digital technology. Filipino households have now become smarter and more interconnected – exploring tech tools to help them keep up with the increasing internet demands for their productivity, connectivity, entertainment, and security needs. A common sight at home these days involves working professionals on their laptop, attending video conferences and downloading large files, alongside young ones studying remotely and collaborating online on projects in real-time. After all the important work is done, everyone unwinds by streaming their favorite videos and music or playing their online games while hoping without the dreaded lags. Last but not least, as the family remains occupied the entire day, they find peace of mind knowing that their home, property, and even pets are secured with smart security measures in place, enabling easy monitoring. All these activities across the home require a lot of bandwidth, and in most cases, standard routers are not enough to ensure robust WiFi coverage for the entire house. This is where the revolutionary WiFi Mesh System comes into play. A WiFi Mesh system is designed to complement fiber modems, delivering strong WiFi signals in areas of the home that the modem alone cannot reach. It creates a stronger wireless network by blanketing the areas, allowing WiFi to penetrate every nook and cranny of the house. Given the heavy reliance on strong connectivity at home, WiFi Mesh has evolved from being a mere convenience to an absolute necessity.

The power of WiFi 6 technology WiFi 6 offers users the absolute best in WiFi Mesh features and capabilities, delivering an exceptional WiFi experience in households that are bandwidth-heavy, multi-device, and multiuser, making it an ideal choice for homes with power users and a variety of smart home devices. Versus its predecessor, WiFi 6 significantly elevates users’ online experience. With increased data transfer speeds, improved capacity to handle multiple devices, and enhanced performance in traffic-dense areas, WiFi 6 delivers a faster and more reliable wireless experience. Its ability to connect in high-density environments makes it the superior choice for meeting the demands of today’s digital homes.
For those who want to know the full list of technical features offered by WiFi 6 Mesh, here’s what customers can expect in terms of wireless network performance at home: • WiFi 6 Mesh uses Orthogonal Frequency Division Access (OFDMA), which is a method of data transmission designed to increase network capacity and efficiency. With OFDMA, the WiFi network can transmit multiple data bits to multiple users at the same time, efficiently and with minimal conflict. This improvement in data transfer efficiency leads to faster speeds and improved network reliability for multi-device households.
Today’s internet customers are fortunate to have easy and affordable access to WiFi 6, the latest and best WiFi Mesh technology available in the country, through PLDT Home. PLDT Home Fiber customers can now easily elevate their home network with PLDT Home’s allnew TP-Link X55 WiFi 6 Mesh. The TP-Link Deco X55 provides expanded WiFi coverage of nearly 700sqm with three units along with groundbreaking features that come with WiFi 6 technology to enable simultaneous highbandwidth activities.
• WiFi 6 utilizes the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, which deliver optimum speeds and a seamless experience to WiFi 6-powered devices. The tech takes it a step further by doubling access on the latter up to the 160MHz channel width. This wider channel width also leads to increased speeds and an enhanced experience for multiple users.
With the WiFi 6-powered TP-Link Deco X55, you can enjoy consistently high-definition video streaming, lag-free online gaming, uninterrupted video conferencing, and seamless functioning of smart home devices, among other benefits. While having a high-speed internet connection powering the household is important, a solid mesh system ensures maximum wireless coverage at home.
• Multi-user, multiple-input, multiple-output technology (MU-MIMO) allows for more than enough bandwidth for everyone on the WiFi 6 Mesh, to be used for streaming, downloading, playing VR or AR games, or always-online games. That’s because this noteworthy WiFi 6 feature works for uploads and downloads with up to 8 streams.
As the world fully embraces and thrives in their smart homes in this digital era, PLDT Home customers can easily access TP-Link Deco X55 as an add-on to their Fiber Unli Plan at only P199 per month per unit. Elevating your WiFi experience has never been more convenient and accessible!
• WiFi 6’s BSS or Basic Service Set coloring provides seamless connectivity. Interference from other wireless networks can cause issues with your WiFi signal, and this feature marks your network versus neighboring networks so that your router can ignore them.
Boost your WiFi network at home by getting the TP-Link Deco X55 mesh system through your PLDT Home subscription. To learn more, visit https://pldthome.com/wifimeshsystem.

LOVE LANGUAGE: SHARED EXPERIENCES THROUGH TRAVEL MILLENNIALS ANG GEN ZS HAVE A NEW LOVE LANGUAGE, AND ARE INCREASING THEIR TRAVEL BUDGETS
I
n 2024, Millennial and Gen Z travelers in Asia Pacific (APAC) are declaring shared experiences through travel as their new love language, with almost 9 in every 10 travelers intending to pursue travel with their loved ones. Klook’s latest Travel Pulse research also reveals that 3 in 5 travelers are set to splurge on 2024 adventures, dedicating up to half their budget to experiences and activities despite rising costs from global inflation. For Millennials and Gen Zs, travel is more than a holiday; it is the ultimate canvas for building connections and creating shared memories that solidify bonds. Klook COO and co-founder Eric Gnock Fah observes that these travel trends are reflective of a post-pandemic world, where the pandemic-induced isolation and increased digitization of lives have left people yearning for connection. “As we move past the pandemic and era of revenge travel, we observe a transformative shift in travel dynamics. It’s no longer just a journey; it’s the embodiment of a new love language — shared experiences. Travel has become an essential outlet, offering individuals the chance to connect genuinely with themselves, their loved ones, and the world around them.” Connecting through meaningful journeys: travelers prioritize experiences over expenses 64% of Millennials and Gen Zs in APAC, and 66% in the Philippine market are increasing their travel budgets in 2024, with nearly half of them willing to spend up to 50% or more on their holidays. The focus for travelers continues to be on experiences that promise meaningful connections with their companions. This aligns with the finding that 34% of Filipinos prefer to travel with their partners and immediate family. In APAC, 69% of respondents were also found to have booked activities before taking flight.
The study shows that the availability and prices of experiences are a priority for 68% of Filipinos. It also finds that 4 in 10 (45%) Filipinos prioritize a destination’s uniqueness as among the top factors when planning a holiday. Nature and outdoor adventures take the lead at 59%, followed by the thrill of theme parks (53%), and the cultural richness of museums and historical sites (51%). Millennials and Gen Zs trade solitude for shared adventures In 2024, Millennials and Gen Zs across Asia Pacific will break away from pandemic habits of me-time and solitary routines of self-care, and will actively choose to venture back on the road to connect and discover with their loved ones. 9 out of 10 APAC travelers want to pursue trips with others — be it family, partners, or close friends. 30% are opting for getaways with partners (1 in 3), while 26% prefer family adventures (1 in 4), and 21% choose to venture with friends (1 in 5). Millennials also lean towards travel with their partners, while Gen Zs prioritize friend group travel. 65% of travelers are pursuing shared adventures through more frequent, shorter holidays rather than extended getaways to maximize creating these core memories together. New destinations are also on the horizon for 70% of travelers in APAC, with the top destinations on the wishlist being Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Singapore. According to the survey, Filipino respondents expressed their preference for the following destinations: Japan leads with 61%, South Korea follows with 37%, the Philippines (domestic tourism) lands at a fair 36%, and Singapore with a good number at 33%.

Social media is integral for shared experiences, driving shareability factor and travel intent
Spring is the season of love and shared experiences, capturing the most hearts for travelers in APAC
For most travelers (96%), posting about their journeys on social media platforms is more than just documentation — it’s to be shared with others. This act of online sharing becomes a means of capturing and cherishing memories with their social circles, as these shared experiences take root as constants in digital lives.
For many travelers (65% in APAC, and 78% in the Philippines), climate or season plays a huge part in the shared experience of travel. Spring in the early part of the year is the most popular season across APAC, and nearly half of travelers have booked travel within the first three months of 2024. Nature and outdoor activities are among the top ways travelers aim to fully enjoy this coveted season. However, preferences diverge across countries, presenting a diverse tapestry of seasonal affections.
Social media continues to be a key source of travel inspiration, with Instagram (77%) and YouTube (77%) leading the way as primary enablers of wanderlust. As seen in the Philippines, 8 in 10 (86%) have booked a travel experience based on social media recommendations from content creators. 1 in 3 travelers engage with travel content daily, and more than half regularly share their travel experiences on social media. Trust dynamics in online travel recommendations are evolving, with non-celebrity figures being the most trusted source of recommendations, reflecting a broader trend towards authentic and relatable content. Online voices continue to be of considerable influence for travel inspiration, as over 80% base their travel bookings on recommendations from content creators, underscoring the pivotal role of digital influencers in shaping travel choices.
Spring is most favored by travelers from Malaysia and Indonesia, while travelers from Australia and more than half (55%) of the Philippine market want to embrace the warmth of Summer. Taiwan and Korea share an affection for the vibrant hues of Autumn, and Winter claims the spotlight for travelers from India, Thailand, and Singapore. With experiences and social media fueling how travelers express this new love language in the coming year, Klook anticipates a year of renewed enthusiasm for travel toward new destinations and things to do. The Klook Travel Pulse survey was conducted in November 2023 through Milieu with a total of 2,600 respondents across 13 markets, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea, Japan, Australia, Mainland China, India, and Indonesia.

LEGIT TECH SHOPPING
T
here is so much new tech in today’s world, and so many different stores to buy them from. As important as it might be to ensure you get the best deals for the latest gadgets, it would be much more important to ensure that you don’t end up with counterfeit devices in your hands.
Here’s how to identify legit and authentic tech products so you can be sure that you only walk away with #TechAssured products every time.
February 2024

Make sure the price is right
Do your research
Discounts are great, but ridiculously low price tags should set off massive red flags in your brain. If a gadget’s price is far below market value, it could be a fake. Remember: quality materials and components come at a cost, so if the price of a gadget seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Before shopping for new tech, it always pays off to do your research first. Read reviews online, check reputable blogs, watch video reviews, and visit the manufacturer’s website. The more you know about the product’s design and specifications, the less likely you’ll get deceived.
Bring out the grammar police When buying tech, put on your detective’s cap and examine the entire packaging. Is it poorly printed? Does it seem flimsy? Are there basic typos or misspellings in any of the product details? Authentic manufacturers take pride in flawlessness, so discrepancies should make you raise an eyebrow for sure.
Shop at Cyberzone
Verify the security seals and serial numbers
To ensure you always get legitimate and authentic tech products, the best thing to do is to shop at a legitimate place like Cyberzone. Cyberzone is a reputable tech-filled area in SM Supermalls that is filled with authorized retailers and reputable stores with strong anti-counterfeiting measures.
Authentic manufacturers will have security seals or holograms applied on the product with hidden codes that you can verify through an app or online. If a seal is missing or has been tampered with, that’s a sign to run for the hills. The same goes for serial numbers. Authentic gadgets have a unique serial number that works as its fingerprint of authenticity, so make sure you check the number’s legitimacy on the manufacturer’s website if you have any doubts.
There, authenticity reigns supreme; you’ll even experience stellar after-sales support from various tenants. With a curated ecosystem of trusted brands, each gadget at Cyberzone boasts the brand’s seal of approval, so you can shop for cutting-edge smartphones, sleek gaming laptops, and more tech gadgets, devices, and accessories that are proven legitimate with the utmost peace of mind.
Trust your senses Counterfeit tech items often use inferior materials, so don’t forget to physically touch and feel that device before you buy it. Does it feel fragile? Do the buttons not sit right? Are the edges too sharp? Authentic products always have a highstandard build and use high-quality materials. Basically, they should feel like you’re truly getting your money’s worth.
Discover #TechAssured gadgets and accessories exclusively at Cyberzone. Locate your closest Cyberzone using the Store Finder or visit www.smcyberzone.com. Engage in discussions with a vibrant community of tech enthusiasts on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

ROLODEX Words by Jose Alvarez
S
taying connected to others took on several forms before the Internet. For friends and family, there was the address book, where you can store their phone numbers and addresses. For businesses, there was the Rolodex. I first encountered the Rolodex on my father’s office desk in the early 1990s. He was a company president, so this was a requirement for him as he had lots of business contacts. But what made the Rolodex so attractive, and why did it become the gadget of choice for business people all over the world before everything went digital? The word Rolodex itself is a portmanteau of the words “rolling” and “index” and has become a term for any personal organizer of business contacts. It was rather simple in design—all you needed were the Rolodex itself and cards with a name and phone number, but you could also add other information as you saw fit. My father’s was a stock Rolodex that had names, phone numbers, and addresses of various business associates and clients. Danish engineer Hildaur Nielsen, the chief engineer of Arnold Neustadter’s company Zephyr American, invented the Rolodex as we know it in 1956 and the product went to market in 1958. The Rolodex also inspired other inventions at Zephyr American. These included February 2024
the Autodex, which utilized springs that automatically opened up to a selected letter; the Swivodex, an inkwell that did not spill ink; the Punchodex, a paper hole puncher; and Clipodex, which was an office peripheral that was attached to a stenographer’s knee, among others. Neustadter and Nielsen described their products as “a triumph of low technology” and “a lasting symbol of the art of networking,” much like LinkedIn is today. Neustadter retired and sold the company in 1970 to Insilco. Despite the rise of personal computing (and by extension, digital storage) in the 1980s, the Rolodex was a mainstay of any office environment. Some Rolodexes were so valuable that there were reports of companies filing lawsuits against employees who tried to take their Rolodex with them when they left the company. Today, you might get Slack and email access shut off at the press of a button, but you can surely take your business contacts with you no matter where you go. A 1986 episode of the popular TV show Moonlighting involved a Rolodex being ransomed at USD50,000 (USD139,006.39 in 2024) to reflect the value of a Rolodex if one had the right connections. According to a 1989 newspaper article in the Lewiston Journal, Rolodex Corp. executive vice president Joseph Crowley

cited the importance of the Rolodex. “They are the reason we exist,” he said. “The Rolodex system is so simplistic and inexpensive that it doesn’t make sense for people to take up space on a computer storing the kind of stuff it’s used for,” he added. Crowley would be (relatively) quickly proven wrong as computers got smaller, cell phones became a thing, and professional connections and networking grew in importance. However, there was no question of the staying power of the Rolodex as it was a mainstay in my father’s office as late as the mid-2000s. What was the ultimate fate of the Rolodex? Do people still use them today? All signs point to yes. They’re still on sale (a quick search on Google had them going from USD15 to USD68 as of this writing) and they might still be on the desks of executives today as a reminder of a time before digital storage (and the tendency of older generations to be reticent regarding new technology). When you think of making professional connections, the Rolodex was once an integral part of those connections. It was even valuable to the point where companies once filed lawsuits to make sure people didn’t take their connections with them to rival companies. Today, LinkedIn is the current iteration of the Rolodex—and a reminder that who you know is just as important (if not more important) than what you know.
