CoVER ARTIST: JAMES MCELHINNEY Guest Teaching Artist

BACK CoVER ARTIST: KATIE BLACKBURN Gage Teen Artist, age 13

James Lancel McElhinney attended Tyler school of art, where he received his B.F.a.; skowhegan school of Painting and sculpture; and Yale university, where he received his M.F.a. in Painting. His teaching career began as an assistant to Bernard Chaet at Yale, followed by appointments at Bowdoin College, Moore College of art, skidmore College, East Carolina university and university of Colorado. He has been a visiting associate Professor of Drawing at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn since 2004; and has taught at the art students League of new York since 2005.

“When I’m at Teen art studios, I’m allowed to go outside my comfort zone and be really creative in my art. While I’m there, I draw and paint things I never thought I’d be able to, and learn so many things. But what I think is the most important is to learn from your mistakes and make something out of them. I’m not saying there are no mistakes in art. There are just more opportunities to build off of!” Read more about the Youth Programs at Gage on pages 22-23.

Pamela Belyea: the most rewarding Project

The Most Rewarding Project “The artist never entirely knows. We guess. We may be wrong. But we take leap after leap.” — Choreographer Agnes de Mille 1998: Co-founder of the Academy of Realist Art (later named Gage Academy of Art), Pamela Belyea receives the Seattle Mayor’s Small Business Award.

Y

Es, For NEArlY twENtYFIVE YEArs I’ve been leaping into the unknown — working to craft a new kind of “old-fashioned” art school, dedicated to serving artists of all ages and abilities. From our humble, nomadic beginnings in new York and santa Fe and back (and again), to our current home on Capitol Hill, Gage has become a flourishing community of artists and innovators. For me, as an architect, fashioning this vital, living thing has proven to be the most rewarding building project of my entire life.

2012: Pamela awards a gold en “Pammy” to a talented artist at Bes t of Gage.

on July 1, I step down as Executive Director at Gage academy of art — but my passion for arts education continues. I am leaving Gage to return to college with a long-term vision of creating a new kind of preparatory school. I’m sure my next mission will require many more leaps of blind faith, but will hopefully prove as satisfying and meaningful as my decades of leadership here at Gage.

1999: Pamela Belyea is featured in a David Horsey cartoon in the seattle P.I., post W.T.O.

as Director Emerita I will continue to be an enthusiastic member of the Gage community. as I prepare for my next leap into the unknown, I know I can count on the good work of my friends, colleagues and advocates to strengthen and support the culture of excellence at Gage — and I salute the Gage artists of all ages and abilities today and tomorrow, who continue to grow, create and inspire. always,

Pamela Belyea, Co-founder/Director Emerita Gage academy of art

2010: Kang-O’Higgins Atelier student Deborah Scott portrays Pamela Belyea in front of the St. Nicholas Building at Gage. Santa Fe to Seattle and back again, a look at Pamela and Gage through the years. 1

Work with an iconographer trained by vladislav andrejev, founder of the Prosopon school of Iconology, and learn how to create a traditional Russian-Byzantine icon in egg tempera with gold leaf halo and shell gold highlights through a rigorous step-by-step process. Included is an explanation of the spiritual symbolism of every step of the contemplative icon-writing process while teaching you the traditional techniques required to successfully complete your icon. Price of workshop includes all art supplies needed for the week including gold leaf, gum arabic and a solid wood gessoed board. All of the students in the workshop write the same icon, Mother and Child.

This rigorous workshop addresses accurate drawing of the large forms and gestures of the figure, the translation of those forms into color masses and the depiction of the color of the light that pervades an environment, as well as paint handling, surface preparation and other technical issues. Working quickly and decisively on one-day figure paintings, you learn to simplify complex observed scenarios, create compelling personal compositions with the human figure as your subject and to make paintings that work as a cohesive whole.

Florence comes to Gage! Prepare yourself for a comprehensive exploration of the human figure as you develop new ways of thinking, seeing and painting, enabling you to achieve a realistic representation of the human figure. sokol, Principal Instructor at The Florence academy of art, leads your exploration though topics such as the sight-size method, figure construction, structure through visual anatomy, form and its relationship to light, the optical impression and paint handling. Learn fundamental and advanced concepts of understanding and deconstructing visual perception into separate organized elements, developing a structured thought process for translating those elements accurately in paint. Prior figure painting experience recommended.

Ateliers

[Fall quarter begins September 16, 2013]

r

Adult ProgrAms : Ateliers

unning from mid-september through mid-June each year, ateliers offer an intensive studio program for the serious artist-in-training. The ateliers (French for artist’s studio) are based on the traditional teaching model of the 19th-century European academies, where dedicated art students apprenticed with a master artist. atelier students are given an individual studio space to complete projects independently under the guidance of their instructor. Working together in group studios, atelier students enjoy the benefit of creative influence and dialogue among their peers within a focused environment. Enrollment in the atelier programs is yearly, with nine months of dedicated instruction. For the 2013-2014 school year, the ateliers run september 16, 2013 through June 13, 2014. aristides and kang-o’Higgins students make a 30-hour-per-week studio commitment, including working half of every day from the figure model. students of Faigin work independently for a minimum of 15 hours in the studio each week, in addition to attending two weekly teaching sessions. atelier students receive a 10% discount on all concurrent classes and workshops, as well as free access to all Drop-In Figure studios and any Lecture series. occasionally, mid-year transfers are allowed — please inquire with the Registrar at 800.880.3898. Application deadline for 2013-14 is may 31, 2013. to schedule a visit or to receive application materials, email Carol@gageAcademy.org, call 206.343.4243 x15 or 800.880.3898. Juliette Aristides in the studio.

ARISTIDES ATELIER Classical Drawing & Painting Juliette Aristides

KANG-o’HIGGINS ATELIER Drawing & Painting Mark Kang-O’Higgins

FAIGIN ATELIER Still-Life Painting Gary Faigin

Based on the 19th-century model for training painters, this four-year diploma program provides time-tested methods for solving pictorial problems. aristides teaches in stages: serious beginning students focus on drawing; more advanced students move into monochromatic and then fully-chromatic painting. Fourth-year students work on individual projects with guest mentors. Work from casts, the model and master copies in a series of progressively complex projects. Intended for long-term students, the aristides atelier offers you the necessary vocabulary to create well-designed and well-executed drawings and paintings.

Intended for long-term students, the kango’Higgins atelier offers the opportunity to work on increasingly complex independent projects under the close guidance of your instructor. You work with line and tone, light and shadow, color theory and mixing, proportion and anatomy, as well as different approaches to life drawing and painting. Learn to convey the essential nature of your subjects through finding the balance between technical accuracy and expressive gesture. short slide and technical demonstration lectures help you add to your skills and place your work into a wider historical and contemporary context.

The Faigin atelier offers painting students the opportunity to focus their studio practice on the study of still-life arrangements over the course of one to several years. The intimate studio setting enables you to devote as much time as you wish to creating paintings, without the limitations of model time or weather conditions. Because everyone shares the same focus, optimal conditions for creative interchange and dialogue develop. You work toward success using the still life as a tool for the development of your own artistic voice, creating original, lively pictures that express your ideas and feelings, and focus on technique, rendering and composition.

On printed materials, Wells Fargo logo colors ÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐ Fargo Red and Wells Fargo Yellow — must always match their CMYK formula respectively, whether printing d or uncoated stock. Never substitute other colors. This is especially important since certain paper stocks and ÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐ t types of media may alter the way a color looks when reproduced. For this reason, a color check while the job ÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐ ess or in final production is essential.
