MARCHE - Framing Map

GENERAL FRAME The Marches are a Middle-Adriatic Region made up by 18 valleys organised in 5 different Provinces: Pesaro e Urbino (PU), Ancona (AN), Macerata (MC), Fermo (FM) and Ascoli Piceno (AP). By the geographical point of view, proceeding west to north, the Region is typically divided into three parts: mountain-apennine territory, hill-country and tight coastline. The geomorphology of the Marches is characterised by landscapes whose antiquities gradually decrease as much as it proceeds from the Appennino to the coast: the intermediate sub-apennine bond and the coastline had been progressively engraved by the erosion process of rivers which led to a series of parallel valleys, called “a pettine”, separated by the same amount of hill ridges. Due to the fact that some of these valleys are connected with apennine passes, they had always been preferred in the road system development process.
