Introduction

Hidden Lines and Hidden Spaces require projecting possible, yet indefinite, definitions. Considering the two forms of ‘reality’:

Building in the hidden lines

the visible and the invisible.

‘Building’ is imagined as both an object and an action.

<Excerpt from the video study “Break” (00:01:12)

Placing a theoretical volume in the missing end of the block, you will wonder: what is the purpose of finishing a city block?

Every corner of every street leads to a space, a space defined by the tension of a block. When I placed my theoretical volume in this space - the corner and the street - , I broke its end, with the idea of both inviting users to the public space at south and proposing a journey rather than a simple itinerary.

Site Plan with proposal, 1:1000

Break - Interrupt (a continuity, sequence, or course)

The breach created by the action of the block’s gravity and the energy of the street allows a breathing block: Porous, but not exposed To understand the surrounding verticality within the design, the longitudinal axis is framed by two (2) towers: Bringing a recessive element to the main street facade.

In an effort to connect the building to the public plaza, two (2) commercial ground floors are opened, to bring to the surrounding a much needed active center. Along this decision was made another one, to redirect the circulation - away from the plaza clearing it from car traffic and parking. 3 floors of parking are planned to replace the open air congestion, with 100 public parking places and 50 private ones.

For the residential floors, emphasis is given to offering a connection to the exterior on the East-West axis for the middle bodies and North-South to the towers.

Circulation spaces are envisaged as both for movement and rest : Wide, it is visually connected to the surroundings and windows sills may be used as sitting devices.

The thirty-six (36) proposed apartments are divided in three (3) categories: 30 sqm studio - one (1) floor ; 1-2 people 60 sqm duplex - two (2) floors ; 3-4 people. 90 sqm duplex - two (2) floors ; 5-6 people.

The plans were developed after a study on living typologies, and are suitable for singles, families and co-living.

The different building typologies are reflected in the choice of materials: contained stone towers contrast with light meshed elongated bodies. As shown in the color study - page 10 - a variaty of tones are present on site. However, warm earthy hues are privileged.

Task 1: How to sub-devide the site? Task 2: What are the critical elements in the surrounding fabric? Task 3: Define spatial re-organisation.

Ultimately, we can understand this project as a visual research on our living methods. How does society evolve? Does our housing evolve with it? What influence can we have on our surroundings when designing?

Redefining the public space through the stepping back of the front facade into the block, inviting users behind the scene of the site; decisions are made to inrease the relation between the construction and the human, perforing the strict urban fabric of the city. We question the role of architecture in this, a case by case situation. Due to the difficult given site, this design is an oportunity to research and grasp the essence of, not only the emotional understanding of the surroundings, but a solution that will respond to the needs of both its environment, and its users.

Buildings’ relations to the public and dwelling typologies need to change in unison with the development of our society, a design canon we should not forget about. New methods of living call for new designs, adapted designs.
