BRIEF

NEW ARCHIP LIBRARY Prague, Czech Republic Studio brief The site for the Nasadil/Duba Studio is located on the corner of Frantiska Krizka/Skalecka streets and forms a missing corner of a town block. The site is within a minute walking distance from current Archip facilities. The context of the site will be analysed and significance within Prague 7 and Letna will be discussed. The proximity to Letna gardens, Expo 58 pavilion and various educational facilities, as well as important historical monuments will play a role forming the concept proposal for the new building. The topography is complicated as well as the immediate adjacencies of the site with issues of access, town scape and scale. We will concentrate on the proposals being sensitive to their contest, as well as contemporary addition to the Prague 7 entourage of good quality modern buildings. The Library will be considered as a space for research, study and meeting. A pavilion with basic accommodation (entrance/ social space, library space of approximately 100sqm, a study space of 40sqm, an archive / storage, a library office and toilets. Students will look at various references worldwide and will look at inventive ways of organizing, planning a small library where individual research is possible, as well group study and social interaction between students. DESIGN STATEMENT

Following a study focused on the siteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s relationships with the neighboring gardens and public buildings, along with the present greenery, it was concluded that considering the social interactions with the public, the sensitive topography, and the relationship to the surrounding permises were the most important axis of analysis. From the many identified constraints and opportunities offered by the site, such as the proximity to school facilities, the attached retaining wall and sloped terrain, and the possible public interractions along with the view over the Vlatva river, it was considered more pertinent to approach as a priority the protection of the greenery in accordance with the park, the touch on the topography and the potential opening to the public. The proposed solution is composed of three separated units forming a single building and responding to the needs of both the furnished program and the site itself. The materiality and verticality of the columnated timber structures are in synchonisation with the nearby trees. The core of the proposal (the library space) is located at the highest point of the three units, following the topography. Besides, the public interaction is exploited through the addition of a common space/cafeteria insite, open to both the users of the clinic and the library, the aim being to popularise the garden and invite interactions. The reading pavilion located in the back garden benefits from both the projection of the site onto the river which it frames through a vertical opening, and the embrace of the willow tree, while maintaining visual contact with the library. The main furniture of the units is incorporated in the structure itself. Bookshelves and seats are framed by the timber columns supporting the building. My proposal achieves an harmonious interaction with the current landscape by being shaped through the topogaphy and the position of trees. The division into three units ensures a respect of the porous structure of the surrounding vegetation and complies with the heterogenous nature of the program, and at the same time possesses the unity of a small village, to which it ressembles. In order to approach the site that was given in the most comprehensive way, I investigated projects dealing with the different aspects I wanted to explore through this project: social contact, materiality, and relationship to the surrounding environment. The location of the site is sensible. A relationship is already established between the clinic and its users, and has to be considered and preserved. As a continuation of the Letna gardens, the site is subject to their influences. The dense vegetation and terrain are strongly present within the site itself, giving it a unique character. Due to the small scale of the project (200sqm of permises), the greenery present on site became a major element among the siteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s restrictions along with its anatomy. The Micro Library by Zao/Standard Architecture being located in a Hutong encaptures the bonds present within a community, while the project by BC Architects focused on the materiality of the buiding in regard to the context. The pavilion by City Form Lab deals, similarily, with an untraditional shaped site presenting a slope and protecting the present mature trees.
