Falcone
07 February - 24 March 2019
After working for over twenty years with his uncle Philippe, one of the greatest Impressionist and Modern Art dealers of his generation, Jean-François Cazeau opened his gallery in September 2009 in the heart of the Marais district of Paris, rue Sainte Anastase, a few steps away from the Picasso Museum. JeanFrançois Cazeau uses his knowledgeable expertise and advice on Impressionist and Modern Art in keeping with a family tradition, whilst also paying close attention to the transformations of his era and being involved in the Contemporary Art Market. This dual ambition has made the gallery a major actor of the French and international art scenes. The gallery permanently shows works by Impressionist and Modern masters such as Pierre Bonnard, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Juan Gris, Fernand Leger, André Masson, Amedeo Modigliani, Henri Matisse, Joan Mirò, Pablo Picasso and Alfred Sisley. It complements this strong selection with key artists of the post-war era including Gaston Chaissac, Jean Dubuffet, Philip Guston, Hans Hartung, Yves Klein, Yayoi Kusama, Joan Mitchell and Niki de Saint Phalle. The hanging presentations of the gallery often attempt to create bridges between different artistic movements, in a variety of techniques, and across the twentieth century. In recent years the gallery has presented varied and exceptionally well-thought-out exhibitions to shine some light on artists whose place in art history is essential, but that have not yet experienced the same amount of visibility as some of their contemporaries. From Auguste Herbin’s geometrical abstraction, to Afro Basaldella’s first dedicated exhibition in France, the gallery has curated strong exhibitions, providing its visitors with thought-provoking presentations and historical insights.
Falcone 07 February - 24 March 2019
San Remo, Italy Jean-François Cazeau is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition dedicated to Italian contemporary artist Falcone, from the 7th of February to the 24th of March, in San Remo. This show comes after several years of following the progression of the artist, now working and living between Belgium and Sweden. Falcone was born in Palermo (Italy) in 1990. He grew up in Milan where he obtained a diploma at the Liceo Artistico di Brera in 2008 and continued to study Art History at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera. In 2010 he moved to Brussels, where he attended the Painting course at ERG (Ecole de Recherche Graphique). He finished his Master in Fine Arts in 2015 at KASK (Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten) in Gent, mentored by Narcisse Tordoir. During his studies in Belgium, he was featured at Luc Tuymans’ exhibition opening at Bozar (2011) and took part in the group show Translation(s) at Bruxelles Congress (2012). In 2015, he had various solo exhibitions including In.visibile at Alson gallery (Milan) with an artwork from Tintoretto (1518-1594), Ermetism I & II at Archiraar Gallery (Bruxelles) and at Croxhapox (Gent). He has been selected to take part in the Courtauld Institute’s Biennial (London) and Artificial realities (2016-2017), with world renowned artists such as Tracey Emin, Rachel Whiteread, and Daniel Buren, His work tries to establish a dialogue with the history of painting, investigating from inside all the aspects of this
medium. Falcone analyses painting reusing old masters’ works and recreating the same techniques in order to distort and appropriate them in his owns painting process. Falcone’s paintings are a combination of old and modern techniques, where ancient recipes are sometimes mixed with modern manipulation. Blurring the limits of painting, Falcone creates unclear and confusing atmospheres, switching indistinctly between figuration and abstraction. Influenced by the mastery of Caravaggio, Falcone contrasts dark tones in the way of chiaroscuro, recreating some scenographic similarities with works of the Italian master. Theatrically powerful, Falcone’s works often represent old master paintings, mostly from artists who were part of the “setta dei tenebrosi.” These have been slightly modernized but have kept the skillfulness of the masters’ technique. The “setta dei tenebrosi” was the name of the movement born in Naples describing the followers of Caravaggio.

Where Falcone really revolutionizes the imagery is in his use of various media to thicken the texture of the paint. Different varnishes can be applied in order to blur the subject and create a modern impression of classical iconography. Tar is also used by the artist in a variety of his works. Tar was used by Caravaggio and many of his followers to create a shiny black pigment which would reflect light like no other pigment previously. Falcone pays tribute to Caravaggio and the progress that he made to painting as a technique. Anchored in the tradition of 20th century art, regularly showing artists inspired by Caravaggio, Jean-François Cazeau is extremely pleased to host it’s first monographic exhibition of Falcone.
