elcome back dear readers to a very special edition of your favourite local magazine: the FESTIVAL edition. It’s that time of year again when festivals spring up like wildflowers both in the Channel and further afield. So, what better way to usher in our thus far dubious summer than with a celebration of its most hedonistic pastime: the festival.
Here at Gallery we love a good time. And we know our readership does too. We like to celebrate diversity, explore culture, and have fun. So you could say that the festival edition was kind of a no-brainer. As usual, inside you’ll find an intoxicating mix of Island specific topics, such as profiles of the artists at the Guernsey Festival and write ups of the Sark Folk Festival, and international information, like festivals of the world and a Cockney guide to the Olympics. We’ve got photography, literature, ale, fashion, and jazz festival information within, to name just a few.

INTRO
Gallery is published eleven times a year as a fresh yet discerning guide to all that happens on the Island and beyond. With quality and style in mind, our tone is not too superior or too serious, written by the people of Guernsey for people everywhere.
Festival came into the world from the Latin ‘festivus’ and was used to refer to feasting and celebration, often of a religious nature. We can still see that interpretation resonating down through the ages into the present day. Think of the flocks of teenage revellers dancing in the mud, like whirling dervishes lost in some transcendent ecstasy. Or dreadlocked hippies chilling in yurts ‘expanding their minds’. Even the old seasonal themes of festivals seem eerily mirrored in our modern times: How many hopeful festival- goers yearn to find a lover? How many festivals exist celebrating the abundance and variety of food and drink? Perhaps it’s no surprise that the underlying currents within festivals have remained the same throughout the ages. After all, the passion festivals invoke - whether it’s for art, poetry, food, drink, or music speaks to us on a subconscious level. It fulfills a part of us that needs to get lost in a love of something, an experience of something, and a celebration of (in one way or another) being human. So, engage your senses, and get lost in this issue of Gallery. With a bit of luck, you’ll soon be attending and experiencing some of the events discussed within.

NEXT BIG THING? HOOF HEELS
LA TOMATINA On the last Wednesday of August every year in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region of Spain, 9,000 locals and 20,000–40,000 foreigners descend on the town to throw tomatoes at each other in honour of the Virgin Mary and St. Louis Bertrand. This tradition has been around since the 1940s, though it was briefly suppressed under the reign of Franco. The festival starts with a person attempting to scale a greased pole to capture a cooked ham. Once the ham is taken down from the pole, water cannons are fired at the participants and over 100 tons of tomatoes are dumped into the streets for throwing. Women are expected to wear white and men to wear no shirts. Anyone caught wearing a shirt inevitably has it ripped off – including women and especially, tourists, who tend to be the main target of locals.
VIDEO OF THE MONTH Mudhole victims
We all know Glastonbury Festival is famous for its never-ending rainfall and knee-deep mud traps. Unfortunately these two hapless drunkards were completely oblivious as to what they were walking into - quite literally. Hilarious! http://www.youtube.com watch?v=mzwem92gwTs
We thought we’d seen the worst of footwear when Crocs were first launched but oh no, these little beauties beat Crocs toes down to the ugliest shoe ever award. On sale at the Cheltenham Festival.

HOROSCOPES
Your Monthly Horoscopes words | Sharon Ward
Aries March 21 -April 19
Mars into Libra this month brings love and harmony. Seek beauty and you will find it. Make the most of your charm and tact to make sure that things go your way. Love and you will be loved. From the 15th to the 21st let go of the need to control – holding on will only backfire.
Taurus
April 20 -May 20 Communicate openly and you will receive even more than you give. Don’t give into the temptation to gossip; use your energy for productive projects instead. From the 1st to the 10th of July, embrace the unknown and you’ll find yourself in a good place.
Gemini May 21 -June 20
Surprise loved ones by showing them how much they mean to you. Putting others’ needs first will bring happiness and contentment. From the 15th don’t just hide under the duvet at home. Instead, focus on expressing your creativity and don’t be afraid to try something different.
Cancer June 21 -July 22
Sensitive and nurturing, you want to take away others’ pain this month. Take care though not to become a victim of your own good intentions. Extra responsibility mid-month will demand that you have to deal with serious issues. Life will bring fun and frolics again from the 22nd.
Leo July 23 -August 22
For the first half of this month the planet Mercury will let you let others know how you feel - but only if you’re brave and unafraid of disapproval. The truth will out – clear the air and your mind from irritating matters. Speak out before the 15th though or forever hold your peace.
Virgo August 23 -September 22
Fun and creativity are the core themes this month. Take time out to relax and enjoy life. The first part of this month brings opportunities that will allow rifts to be healed – as long as you approach matters with a loving heart. Build bridges not walls.
Libra September 23 -October 22
Variety really is the spice of life. Break free from the norm, try new avenues and you’ll discover a whole new world. Venus connecting with Saturn at the end of the month brings the opportunity to plan ahead – to create an exciting and progressive future.
Scorpio
October 23 -November 21 Don’t try to control or dominate people or situations this month. Use your intelligence and charm to enlist the help of someone who can do the dirty work for you. You will then be free to focus on what you do best – transforming everyone’s world for the better.
Sagittarius Nov 22 -December 21
Don’t just breeze through life hoping that everything will work out. Use your razor sharp mind to focus on the finer details and then make the changes that you want. From the 14th to the 20th use your boundless energy and incredible intellect to leap forwards.
Capricorn December 22 -January 19
Undercurrents at home and work are befuddling you. Approach matters head on and don’t let others bury their feelings or resentment and you’ll soon uncover all the answers that you need. Dive deep and you’ll bring up pearls of wisdom.

Aquarius January 20 -February 18
You want to move forward so badly that you might not be thinking clearly about what it is you really want. Review your life from the 13th and you’ll know where best to invest your energy in the future. Don’t waste your time listening to people who know less than you do.
Pisces February 19 -March 20
Time to change your daily routine. Don’t waste any more of your valuable time trying to think yourself into action. Follow your heart – deep down you know what changes you want to make. Connect with your intuition and you’ll find a smooth path ahead of you.

SPIRAL EXHIBITION
SPIRAL EXHIBITION BY DARREN CRANMER ‘Spiral’ contains a body of imagery from the last 2-3 years; mostly comprising of Darren’s ‘One Billionth’ series of images together with various commissioned illustrations and personal works. The ‘One
Billionth’ series spawned from Darren’s interests/awe in quantum theory and it’s issues of scale, interconnectivity, our limited perception of realities and life cycles. Other works include ‘Appleseeds’ -
a commissioned illustration to accompany a poem by Crona Gallagher for Popshot Magazine and ‘Five Paths Home’ a personal piece inspired by conversations with his father about his experiences in
the Navy and the symbolic importance of finding your way home. Images such ‘Escape’ and ‘Roger’ are derived from artwork used for some of the illustration’s produced for Gallery Magazine Guernsey.
Darren’s work is produced through creating surreal graphite and charcoal drawings which are sometimes situated in and with subtle digital and mixed media elements and atmospheres.
The opening night was great fun and delightfully busy throughout. Darren said that it was also valuable to hear first-hand peoples’ reaction to his work, which has been nothing but wonderful..

EVENTS
IN THE FACE OF HAITI EXHIBITION THURSDAY 24TH MAY – 16TH JUNE In The Face of Haiti exhibition was a great chance for Guernsey people who have so generously donated to the Bridge2Haiti to see what their money is doing on the ground in the island so damaged by the massive 2010 earthquake.
The moving pictures taken by local photographer Mark Windsor sensitively capture the projects and stories which are evolving all the time. Cleverly displayed with ‘set design’ by Mark Duncan, the exhibition hoped to give insight to people
who did not know about the work. The exhibition, attended by 120 invited guests, was opened by Dame Mary Perkins, a keen supporter of Bridge2haiti, on Thursday 24th May. Mrs Connie Helyar-Wilkinson generously sponsored the exhibition.

GALLERY CRUISED THE CROWDS OVER THE WEEKEND OF GUERNSEY FESTIVAL TO FIND OUT WHAT THE MASSES MADE OF THE EVENT.
The turnout is terrific and the weather is fab today. They have tried to provide something for everyone. We are really looking forward to seeing Maverick Sabre later. The only let down for me is the VIP area, as it is filled with hay and has given me hayfever! [Kate Salt, 36, Manager at JT]
Hadouken! are “Example wannabes”! I’ve never heard of them before but I liked them. Really looking forward to seeing Maverick Sabre - I’m a huge fan and have been listening to it in my car for the past 5 months. [Simon Marshall, 37, Tree Surgeon and Director at Special Branch]

The Spindle Sect were amazing! I loved them - they should have been on the main stage. I had my children here with me earlier today, but there was nothing for them to do unlike last year, which is a shame. The event seems to have lost its family appeal in a year, but obviously it is great for grown ups. [Darran James, Grown Up, Drummer]
I am disappointed that Sons of the Desert are not playing this festival - especially as The Selecter are playing. I saw them 30 years ago on a 2 Tone Tour. I truly hope that this event is a success and keeps going from strength to strength. This sort of event is good for Guernsey and great for music lovers. [Kenny Lloyd, 54, Nurse]
My festival highlight was Little Barrie. They were excellent. It was an added bonus that my band, Teaspoonriverneck played yesterday too. We were first on and it was amazing. I think the layout this year is much better than last year too, as it is more compact. [Steven Lynch, 34, Carpet fitter]
I am pleased that the organisers have put the festival on again. The Island needs something like this, as it is great for locals to come and see good bands. The mud here today makes it feel like Glastonbury! [Glen Irven, 45, Photographer]
It’s turned out nice again! I’m well looking forward to the footie and Kaiser Chiefs later - I predict a riot! The organisers have done another brilliant job and I’m pleased to see that they brought in more loos this year. Loo queues suck. [Adrian Clayton, 43, Investment Manager]
I‘m here today because I feel you’ve got to support local events and I have to say I am loving it so far. I was here last year, and preferred the layout to this year. Saying that, I think the organisers have done a fantastic job and would like to say a big WELL DONE to them! [Claire Pasquire, 33, Funds Administrator] GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

Things turn out the best for those who make the best of the way things turn out! This is a special event and I am so glad that so many people have turned out to support it. I hope they book UNCLE for next year! [Paul Le Page, 50, Banker]
I think this festival is a good thing - if you love music you can come here and have fun, as there is lots to do. You can dance, listen to music and I am really looking forward to watching the Kaiser Chiefs later. [Lola Bougourd, 12]
It’s a blinder! It’s brilliant! And it’s even better because you’ve got no worries in this lovely Island - you feel so safe here. As a Londoner, coming to this festival here in Guernsey is just beautiful. [Julie Millwall, 50, Looks after animals]
It’s great to be at an event like this in Guernsey - the sun is out and beer is £4 a pint - what’s not to love! I’m looking forward to the Utah Saints followed by England spanking Italy, topped off by the Kaisers the job’s a good'un! [Paul Duquemin, 33, Stuntman]
I think the festival is absolutely fantastic. It is well organised, the sun is shining and I can’t wait to watch The Charlatans. If we don’t support these things, they will die away, so it is great to see so many people here today. [Paul Brehaut, 43, Printer]
It’s been quality. There is such a friendly atmosphere here. I will definitely be coming back next year if there is another festival, and will encourage my mates from London to come over for it too. The burgers were a downer but that was the only thing I can complain about! [Lee Hamilton, 24, Recruitment Consultant]
This is a fantastic event and I’m very pleased to see it has been supported more so than last year. It is great that the Stephen brothers have put their necks on the line to do this. This is a fun festival for everyone to enjoy, and is much more of a family event. There is also a real element of self policing here - it is important that security stays at zero tolerance, and this is a key message that has been put across. Dare I say it, but is summer finally on its way? With just a hint of sunshine peeking out from behind the ever-present clouds, I feel compelled to kick off my Birkenstocks, throw on a kaftan and put flowers in my hair. It’s festival season so let’s get outdoors, listen to live music, drink beer out of plastic cups and appreciate the arts. Throughout history festivals have been a time for celebration. They offer a sense of community and belonging. Some festivals have religious origins while others mark a seasonal change or have cultural significance. Whatever the reason for the festival, it’s always a special occasion.

NCT
ESSENTIALLY THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF NCT GUERNSEY HASN’T CHANGED IN 30 YEARS AND WE STILL WANT TO BE THERE TO HELP AND SUPPORT PARENTS.
F
or 30 years, the local branch of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) has been providing invaluable information and support to thousands of local parents. The NCT is the largest parenting charity in the UK and was originally established in the 1950’s.
Over the past three decades, NCT Guernsey has evolved to meet the needs of members. When it was first established in 1982, it was primarily a way of providing up to date, evidence-based information for pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and parenting – and of course bringing groups of parents and their babies together to form the small communities NCT is so well known for. Although that same ethos is at the core, the number of services has steadily increased. NCT Guernsey chair Sarah Langford, whose mother-in-law Jeanne was the group’s first chair, said the key part was providing support in various ways. ‘Essentially the primary focus of NCT Guernsey hasn’t changed in 30 years and we still want to be there to help and support parents. What has changed is the number of services now available and we continue to aim to support all parents, (NCT members and non-members) no matter what age their child is,’ said the mother of three. One of the first introductions to NCT Guernsey will be through the group’s antenatal courses, run by antenatal teacher Anita Davies. The popular antenatal courses book up very early and most attendees on the courses have been recommended it by their work colleagues, friends and family – and word of mouth is invaluable in such a small island community.
Each month we will be featuring a local charity, if you are involved with a charity or organisation or want to recommend someone, please get in touch at give@gallery.gg

‘Becoming a parent is one of the most exciting and rewarding life events but can also be the most challenging. There are so many life changes and so much information available that it can be very disorientating at times and so NCT Guernsey offers support for parents during this period in many ways, for example; peer support groups, social events, coffee mornings, breastfeeding support, reliable information and the skills needed to make informed choices. Our goal is for parents to feel prepared and confident as they approach birth and parenthood whilst ensuring they have a social network and peer support group - a group of friends that they can share this amazing experience with.’ Katrina Bray had her daughter Caitlin six months ago and said the NCT antenatal course had given her some invaluable friends. ‘Although I was born in Guernsey, the friends who I was closest to at school had either moved away and had children or their children were older. The main reason for me wanting to
go to the antenatal course was to meet people in a similar situation as I knew people who were still meeting with their NCT friends years later. Our group has become really close and we have been able to share experiences, celebrate successes and achievements and exchange advice. It’s been brilliant,’ she said. Nadia Newton joined NCT while expecting her daughter Sophia in 2007. ‘My Mum was part of the first NCT group of parents 30 years ago and had said how helpful it had been. Our NCT group still meets regularly even though our children are nearly ready to start school and we have all gone on to have second and third children. I am expecting my third child this summer and am now supporting an NCT antenatal course so that I can hopefully help them as they become new parents and share the experiences of having a new baby,’ she said. As well as NCT antenatal courses, the group runs a number of different support groups and like all NCT events, they are open to both members and non-members; NCT Bumps & Babes runs twice a month on Tuesday afternoons, NCT Toddler Group weekly on Friday afternoons, Breastfeeding Awareness Coffee Mornings monthly to mention a few. ‘NCT aims to be there at every step of the journey and it’s a pleasure for the committee to see how members and their families change and grow over the years.’ One of the most popular local events are the monthly nearly new sales and each year hundreds of parents buy and sell second hand baby goods at St Sampson’s School. ‘They have been phenomenally successful and last year NCT Guernsey was one of the top 10 fundraising branches in the whole of the UK. That’s a huge achievement for us,’ said Sarah. The group has seen even bigger changes in the way it communicates with its members over the past 30 years. ‘It used to be a black and white newsletter but now we have a quarterly magazine and the biggest change has been the use of the internet. We regularly communicate through our NCT pages on Facebook which allow us to reach all of our members instantly and without cost. It’s a brilliant way for us to engage with our members and expand the level of support we give,’ said Mrs Langford. ‘Celebrating our 30th birthday is a huge achievement and hopefully we have been an important part of so many families’ lives over the past three decades. Who knows what the next 30 will bring.’ NCT Guernsey is planning an afternoon tea party later in the year to celebrate the 30th birthday. Anyone wanting to know more about NCT Guernsey can email Sarah Langford on sarahjlangford@hotmail.co.uk call Anita Davies (New Parent Support co-ordinator) on 07781 415603, or search for NCT Guernsey on Facebook. Walkers took part in the 2012 Walk - that’s 1% of the population of Guernsey. If a similar percentage of the UK did such a walk, it would involve 660,000 walkers - over 30 times the size of the London Marathon. Which just goes to show how great the people of Guernsey are in getting behind worthy causes.

The sense of achievement from taking part in such a worthwhile event, which has become part of Guernsey’s heritage and looks set to continue for years to come. Three generations of the Lipscombe family walked as a relay team, which was an inspired way of involving the youngest and oldest relatives. John admits that there are highs and low, from ‘the elation and the pleasure of seeing the wonderful sights around the island’s coast, to occasionally wondering why you are putting yourself through it all. But when you have at last got to the Liberation Monument it is a great feeling, a real achievement, and you promise yourself you will do it again next year, hopefully!’ www.itexwalk.gg

Be sure to visit the site set up on Facebook, http://www.facebook.com/ groups/206360402819934/ now, it will really bring back some fantastic memories and people are invited to share stories and interact with others. Following on from this Gallery will be introducing a Guernsey Nostalgia feature, celebrating all things old about Guernsey, if you have something you want to share or an interesting story, contact nostalgia@ gallery.gg.
events will also take place. The fortnight will conclude with an evening talk given by Mr Don on 14 July at the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts. This evening will celebrate the NCCPG’s 25th anniversary and Floral Guernsey’s 20th anniversary and will be jointly hosted by both groups. The anniversary talk is entitled ‘A Year in my Garden’ and in it Mr Don will discuss his own garden at Longmeadow; the results he has achieved there, his influences, how he implements them and how the garden changes throughout the seasons. Mr Don will also be presenting a ‘Sow and Grow’ gardening workshop for local children at Le Friquet on Saturday 14th July. Chairman of Floral Guernsey, Tony Spruce, is impressed with the calibre of speakers this year. “After the success of our Spring Festival Week with celebrity guests Diarmuid Gavin and Joy Larkcom, it’s a real coup to be bringing Monty Don to speak at Guernsey in Bloom. This event would not be possible without the NCCPG and the sponsorship from Resolution which also allows us to offer subsidised ticket prices for events,” he said. A full program will be available from the Guernsey Information centre from 15th June. Tickets for the Monty Don talk will be available from Friday 8th June at a cost of £15 or £12 for NCCPG members from any of the Guernsey Tickets outlets, or at www. guernseytickets.gg or by contacting the PRCPA box office on 01481 749999.

The four month old Cavalier Chihuahua cross also donned the team’s fancy dress of bright pink leg warmers. Race for Life is the UK’s biggest fund-raising event in the fight against cancer and the largest women-only fundraising event in the UK. Since Race for Life started in 1994, six million participants have raised over £457 million. Fusion Nightclub and Luna Bar are currently searching for a charity partner for 2012/2013. Fusion Nightclub and Luna Bar staff would help to help raise, volunteer for the charity and provide resources that the charity might need. Any charities interested are asked to send a short summary of their charity, their needs and the help they are looking for to Mr Burroughs at Luna/Fusio. Please send all applications to info@fusion.gg.

Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L James
Dubbed ‘mummy porn’ in the press, this is meant to be an erotic novel about the relationship between unworldly Anastasia Steele and multimillionaire Christian Grey – attractive, complicated and consumed by the need for control. Curious to see what all the fuss was about, I found this book unintentionally hilarious. Christian losing control when Ana bites her lower lip, Ana constantly saying ‘holy cow!’ and her infuriating ‘inner goddess’ are ridiculous. However, the story did reel me in and I’m ashamed to say I read the whole trilogy (on my Kindle so nobody could tell)! Escapist, x-rated fun – but keep it hidden

How to Talk to a Widower by Jonathan Tropper When Doug married Hailey beautiful, smart and ten years older - he left his carefree Manhattan life to live in the suburbs with Hailey and her teenage son, Russ. Three years later, at 29, Doug has been a widower for twelve months and just wants to drown himself in self-pity and Jack Daniels. But his eccentric family has other ideas. Mixing pathos and comedy, this funny, insightful book has been called ‘lad lit’ but I loved it – especially the developing bond between Doug and his screwed-up stepson.
UPDATE
The Guernsey Literary Festival website is up and running and you can book tickets online. Whether you’re a poet, prolific writer or just convinced there’s a novel in you waiting to be unleashed, how about booking for one of our workshops? Here are some suggestions: Poets should book a slot with award-winning poet and Reader for the Bridport Prize, Candy Neubert. She’ll be giving individual masterclasses, reading your work in advance and sharing invaluable advice. David Charleston’s ‘Pathways to Poetry’ workshop will allow you to experiment, share poetic practice and get inspired by the work of other poets. A host of successful authors will be running workshops over the weekend. Crime writer and screenwriter Matthew Hall can teach you how to structure a crime story, whilst William Ryan, author of The Holy Thief and The Bloody Meadow, will take you through the intricacies of writing historical fiction. The very funny Marina Lewycka’s workshop is entitled ‘Finding your Voice as a Writer’: find out why choosing the right narrative voice may be the most important decision you make. If flash fiction is more your thing, you mustn’t miss Chuma Nwokolo’s guide to ‘making flash fiction fly’. As self-publishing becomes easier, getting readers to find your book is becoming more difficult. Sophie Rochester from The Literary Platform will be giving practical tips on getting discovered online at her workshop on digital publishing. Or maybe you’re more of a reader than a writer? Whether you are already in a book group or thinking of starting one, Ella Berthoud will help you to make the most of it, discussing how to run it creatively and inspiringly, with ideas and suggestions for the future. For dates, times and tickets for all events and workshops, just go to www.arts.gg and click on ‘Guernsey Literary Festival’.

THE SARK FOLK FESTIVAL
THE SARK FOLK FESTIVAL o I’d imagine that the four of you out there who read my column only do so in the expectation of a certain style of writing. I doubt you’d take time away from your daily rituals (like replacing every instance of the word ‘because’ in Henry James’ ‘Portrait of a Lady’ with the word ‘genitals’) for just anyone. No, if you’re one of my faithful four, it’s because you no doubt see something of your own twisted visage in my inane rambling. With that in mind, I apologise in advance, because this month I’ll actually be writing about something concrete: the Sark Folk Festival. In case you’re unaware of my ethnicity, I’m a Sarkee (yes, it’s an ethnicity). I recall my youth with fondness: the cider fuelled fistfights at the Collinette; the orgies down at Dixcart bay; sacrificing the weakest child at the end of sports day to the Great Sarkee Beyond. Honestly, seven was the best year of my life. As you may or may not know, Sark is a unique island. It has no cars, and is pretty much the only place in the world that considers feudalism ‘so last year’. It’s renowned for a number of things, including its wildlife, the relaxed nature of many of its residents, and just generally being awesome. It’s fair to say that Sark is pretty memorable. And (unless you’re a teetotal, music hating equinophobe with an allergy to dust and fun) you’ll probably find it very enjoyable too. If it seems like I’m waxing lyrical about my homeland, you’d be right, because I want to set the scene for what comes next: the Sark Folk Festival. From what I understand, the Sark Folk Festival was the brainchild of Simon Harvey. In the words of Claire Rakich: “About 4 Christmases ago he told me he thought it would be a great idea to have a folk festival on Sark. I told him it was a great idea and that I’d help him.” Well, it turns out Claire’s enthusiasm was right on the money. As anyone who’s been to one of the SFFs can attest, it’s an awesome event. Despite the designation of ‘folk’ the festival caters to a surprisingly wide range of musical tastes. Not by moving away from folk music, but by embracing it in all of its myriad expressions. Do you like folky blues? They’ve got it. Modern folk rock? You’ll find it there. Perhaps you feel inspiration from gypsy jazz and reggae compliments a folky vibe? Look no further than Sark’s newest band: the Recks.
CULTURE
words | Theo Leworthy
“it’s a totally unique experience. There’s no one-upmanship, no negativity. If you’re an at all folky musician, or a music fan, you’ll fit right in. Everyone just wants to chill out and have a good time.” Jess Nash, a musician from Guernsey and the SFF’s Press Officer, has an idea why that might be: “The organisers are all musicians, the music is absolutely at the forefront of every decision we make.” She explained. “And it’s set in Sark which is a beautiful location that always brings out the best in everyone.” She was a little less certain when asked about what she was most looking forward to from this year’s lineup. “That’s a really hard question as the lineup is phenomenal, but I’m really looking forward to Les Dieses, a high energy French folk band, who appeared at the 2010 festival and are returning again this year. I’m also really looking forward to seeing Lucy Ward - BBC Folk Awards Horizon winner 2012.” Personally, I’m looking forward to the Sark bands, Big Sheep and the Recks, who never fail to please, but I’m also looking forward to 3 Daft Monkeys, as they’re particularly famed both for their originality and their dynamism as a live act. Not all the best experiences are even in the festival though. To quote Claire again: “We’ve had some amazing performers and workshops but actually I’d say my very favourite memories are things that go on around the festival, often outside festival hours, that we don’t plan.” The buzz on the avenue, as wandering musicians stop and play, the atmosphere in the Mermaid and the Bel Air, and (of course) the numerous wild after parties, are amongst my favourite memories from the last two years of folk festing. Still unsure about it? Well, let me sell you with one last quote, this time from local celebrity (and Guernsey’s premier Bruce Willis impersonator) Jedd Gamble, who summed it up nicely: “Beery Smokey Folky Sarky Party” before passing out on a bench outside the town church. But now comes the sting in the tale: you’ve missed it this year. By the time this edition of Gallery goes to print I’ll be busy in a field watching music, thoroughly hammered on strong cider and rambling incoherently to passing livestock. Don’t let that dissuade you, though, from booking tickets for next year’s event at the earliest opportunity. They sell damn quick, and it’s well worth the money. That’s me pretty much done. Next month I’ll be back to rambling about nothing in particular, but if that’s not enough of an apology for you, you can (as always) direct your death threats and poorly written criticism to the following: battheo@hotmail.com
I spoke to Wez Coombes, a Sark musician who plays bass with Big Sheep and guitar for the Recks, to see how the SFF compares with other gigs he’s played. “It doesn’t compare to other gigs,” he said,

TERRY WHITE
Terry White
CULTURE
words | Caroline Mauger eet Marcus Moon: he’s a 30-something civil engineer with an eye for a good business opportunity but whose projects are constantly jeopardised by a rich cast of villains. Intrepid and ingenious, kind but sometimes misguided, Marcus is the likeable hero of a series of financial thrillers which will have you rooting for him all the way. Then there is Terry White, the creator of Marcus. Terry was still working as a civil engineer when he started writing the Marcus Moon series, so is the protagonist of all six books a thinly disguised version of himself? ‘Marcus Moon is based on my alter-ego,’ says Terry. ‘Whom I’d have liked to have been but didn’t dare to be!’ The plots themselves, though embellished by the author’s imagination, are inspired by real events: as a partner in his firm, Terry was responsible for the Middle East so he has insider knowledge of the often unconventional ways in which business is done in that part of the world. ‘I’d describe it as factional,’ explains Terry. ‘I often disguise place names – I don’t want to be sued!’ It was whilst travelling the globe that Terry first started to write, to alleviate his boredom when hanging around in airports or on longhaul flights. His first two books were written in longhand and took five years to complete. Success was not instant: ‘I have a thick pile of rejection letters,’ reveals Terry, ‘but so does J.K Rowling, which cheers me up.’ What strikes you about the Marcus Moon adventures, perhaps more than the intrigue, is that they are extremely funny. When Terry wrote There Came a Big Spider this made it a hard sell: ‘There was no market for funny books then – but thanks to people like Bill Bryson, humour is back in vogue.’ Indeed, Trespassers Will Be Mutilated was warmly received, prompting Terry to get back to work on his older manuscripts. Since changing jobs and moving to Guernsey in 1991, Terry has added to the series at a rate of one volume per year. As you join the boys in the Frog and Nightgown or try to keep up with Marcus’ tangled love life, the sense of fun that pervades the books leaves you in no doubt that the author has thoroughly enjoyed writing them. Terry doesn’t disagree. ‘I really enjoy it – I look forward to doing it

every day.’ He admits to being poorly disciplined, not following a schedule and only writing when he is in the mood – ‘If I’m not in the mood it’ll be tripe and I’ll delete it the next day’ – but when he is absorbed in his work he will carry on until late at night. ‘It’s a strange process,’ he says. ‘As you’re writing the characters take over. And you do more with the characters you like most.’ He partly attributes his success to luck, but confesses to being an avid people watcher, an essential pursuit for a writer. Each installment of the series is a standalone novel in its own right, but reading them in order will give a chronological account of Marcus’ career and relationships. In Terry’s latest book, A Donkey Up A Minaret, Marcus is 35 and has been commissioned to design the prestigious ‘Gateway to the Gulf’ project. The title refers to an Arabic saying, ‘He who leads a donkey up a minaret can also lead him down.’ Which, roughly translated, means ‘You’d better stick with me – or else.’ Are Terry White’s novels aimed at male civil engineers? ‘My biggest fans are women!’ This is despite Terry admitting that he thinks his tales are rather chauvinistic and that one publisher deemed them ‘totally unsuitable for women.’ A recent marketing exercise involved giving away copies of Marcus Moon books with the Evening Standard – a ploy which led to positive feedback and increased sales. ‘You’ve got to get your books out there,’ says Terry. The whole series is available for e-readers, with one volume being offered at a low price to reel you in. Terry is a keen painter and, when his children were young, he would make up stories and draw pictures for them, so he wouldn’t mind having a go at children’s fiction. In the meantime he is busily working on his seventh book – does this also feature Mr Moon? ‘I had a go with Crispin Pritchard – I wrote two chapters then thought “This is Marcus Moon!”’ What’s not to love about Marcus? Ladies adore him, men want to be him.. almost like James Bond. But much, much funnier. A Donkey Up A Minaret is published by PenPress. Print £7.99/Kindle £0.70. Terry White will be speaking at the Guernsey Literary Festival on Sunday 16th September.

words | Tony Brassell
WEST END MEN are coming to Guernsey I guess I received the phone call many women have dreamed of, “Hello, it’s Lee Mead”. Guess it was a surprise to me too as I wasn’t expecting him to call in person and before all you ask, no I didn’t get his number. Sorry to disappoint you. Lee is one of the three West End Men who will be entertaining us at Beau Sejour on the 28th and 29th July 2012. Most people will remember him for winning the BBC’s Any Dream Will Do to secure the role of Joseph in the hit musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. However he has also played the role of Fiyero in Wicked and Emmett in Legally Blonde. He told me one of his favourite roles was in Phantom which he said was a fantastic show to be in. He will be accompanied by Matt Rawle who appeared in Zorro, Aspects of Love, Martin Guerre, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon and Evita, together with Stephen Rahman-Hughes who has Bombay Dreams, West Side Story and Teatro against his name. Just in case you are thinking that this is an all male show, the guys will be accompanied by the magnificent voice of Kerry Ellis who played Meat in We Will Rock You and Elphaba in Wicked, both in the West End and on Broadway. She too is looking forward to performing in this new show. Lee is really excited at the line up the producers have put together. It is his first time working with James Milton and Paul Morrisey and he is impressed at how passionate they are about their work. He told me he likes to work with new producers. The Guernsey performances will follow visits to Guildford and Jersey and Lee hopes it will be the start of a long and successful tour for this Milton Morrisey Production. This brand new show is directed by Mitch Sebastien and Lee explained that Mitch wanted to create something different so you will see some unusual and unexpected arrangements. The two hour show will need a lot of rehearsal and
preparation he told me. Lee has never been to Guernsey. He was calling from his home in Kent and while we were speaking his two year old daughter, Betsy, interrupted us demanding to see Daddy. I think mum intervened, mum being Denise van Outen of course. It was really nice to hear the family in action as it were. Lee isn’t currently on stage and is enjoying time at home with his family. Being in the West End isn’t very sociable he explained, with 8 shows a week to fit into the schedule, something he has done for the last 4 years. After he visits us he is off to America for a 10 week stint, starting in August and then at Christmas he will be performing in Panto at the Mayflower in Southampton for 4 weeks. Then next year he will be travelling back to the USA. He hopes to be squeezing in a few more shows in November. I asked him if he had any tips for budding performers. He explained that when he started he did several years in amateur productions and learnt very quickly that you need to enjoy what you are doing. Even when he started earning money it was vital that he continued to be happy performing or else it was impossible to entertain the crowd. He told me that if you aren’t happy performing the audience will sense it and won’t enjoy the show. He added that of course there is also a lot of hard work involved in performing, learning all the songs and scripts. This show has a great pedigree, an excellent director and 4 fabulous voices. I for one cannot wait to take my seat. We are all fans of the musicals in our family and I know this will be a great experience for us all. And just in case you are wondering: yes he sounded really nice on the phone. He finished off, ‘See you soon’. Yes Lee you will see many of us real soon.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 800 DAYS
Russian visa application hell has been resolved and we have begun our journey. We have waved goodbye to the Slightly Grey Cliffs of Dover, sailed across the channel and stormed the beaches of Dunkerque, in a truly British style; driving occasionally on the wrong side and asking for directions! Due to the cost of Europe and its proximity to home we decided that the best thing to do is motor straight through and stop at a few carefully selected places en-route. Being Guerns we intuitively headed north towards Breda! Europe as a land mass is devoid of borders; thanks to the good old E.U, passport stamping in Europe has become a thing of the past. As we motor up through France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Norway it’s tough to know where one country stops and another starts. You pass the odd blue E.U. sign stating a country name, but blink and you’ll miss it. The topography of each country is the dead giveaway though and more so the further you head north.
48
Festival.indb 48
It isn’t until we get to Denmark that the landscape starts getting really interesting. Our journey takes us up Route 181, a deserted road that runs along Denmark’s wind battered west coast. On our left huge sand dunes taking on the might of the North Sea and on the right marshy Fjords, a twitchers paradise. It is along this road that we encounter the 10th Internationale Sandskulpturfestival at Sondervig. The 200m long, 7m high wall of sand, sculpted by 35 international artists has to be seen to be believed. This year’s theme was poignantly ‘The Seven Wonders of the World’. The last stop on our whirlwind tour of Denmark was Grenen, the northernmost point of Denmark. Like a carefully placed exclamation mark at the end of a sentence, the sandy spit at Grenen neatly disappears into the sea; appropriate for such a meticulously kept country. You can literally stand on the tip with one foot in the Kattegat Sea and the other in the Skagerrak. For a brief moment we were the two most northerly people in Denmark.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 800 DAYS
After a 4-hour ferry ride we arrived in Norway: land of the midnight sun. In stark contrast to a very flat Denmark we soon arrived at a hill, a hill that soon turned into a mountain. In a very short period we climbed 1250 metres above the tree line and arrived at the Hardangervidda glacier. For Emma who lived in the Middle East for the last 9 years and whose last experience of Snow was at Ski Dubai, this was a real treat.
If you’d like to celebrate our gala of gallivanting ‘around the world in 800 days’ you can read our regular updates on our website at www.aroundtheworldin800days.com, like us for status updates on facebook at www.facebook.com/aroundtheworldin800days or follow us on Twitter @mrs800days
The extreme descent from the summit down to the Hardangerfjorden was a real experience. We drove through an incredibly disorientating 2km spiral tunnel that descends corkscrew like through the cliff edge. This marvel of engineering wasn’t a concrete super structure lined with fluorescent lights but more resembled a 19th century mineshaft filled with lingering exhaust fumes. The reward for enduring such a disconcerting rollercoaster ride was well worth it as we emerged at the jaw-droppingly beautiful fjord.

As we dip and climb, crystal clear, mirror-like Fjord waters morph into brilliant-white snow-covered ice-fields at altitude, which are transformed into powerful torrents of milky blue river water crashing over harsh rock rapids downwards towards the next tranquil fjord. There are distinct changes with each day as we travel directly north towards the Arctic Circle; it’s staying lighter (at our current location the light doesn’t dip until almost midnight), roads are steeper, there are less people and ‘deer’ warning signs common in mainland Europe have been replaced with ‘elk’. Our next chapter will also see us enter bear country! BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

International Jazz Festival Montreal, Canada This is an annual, two week festival that was conceived by Alain Simard. Shows start at noon and go on until midnight at a variety of venues – small jazz clubs to large concert halls. The festival culminates with a massive free show with crowds of up to 250,000 people.
Mardi Gras New Orleans, U.S.A This is the Old South granddaddy of all festivals. Originally about preparing for the start of Lent. It is about excess and is one major party blowout, including parades with huge floats and lavish masquerade balls.
Oktoberfest Munich, Germany Mainly about beer...lots of beer! Aswell as live music and a huge parade. Held since 1810 this 16 day festival runs from late September to the first week of October. With about 5 million people attending each year, it is a very important event in Bavarian culture.
Festival of San Fermin Spain A historic festival, held in early July, famous for the ‘running of the bulls’. It all kicks off with a huge fiesta that involves the entire town as well as all the tourists. It is a folk festival but it climaxes with the bullrun where men get chased down the streets by bulls.
South by Southwest Austin, U.S.A A live music and film festival which takes place in spring time. It began in 1987 and continues to grow in size. It has become a massive tourist attraction and has made Austin, Texas hugely popular.

DISKO DISKO PARTIZANI words | Samantha Evans illustration | Darren Cranmer
I had just finished organising the Funk Da Rock stage at the Ivy Earth Fair in 2010 and it was safe to say, I was shattered. It then dawned on me that booking a flight out the very next day to a 7day festival in Hungary called Sziget was maybe not the best way to deal with my fatigue! However, I slept the entire 6½ hours from Guernsey to Budapest and by the time my friends and I were stood at the taxi rank outside Budapest airport, I had gained my well-deserved and needed sleep. We bundled our bags and tents into a taxi, and so began the adventure. Sziget is a festival in Northern Budapest on an island, big enough to fit 400,000 festivalgoers and an uncountable number of stages, stalls and extravaganzas, on the river Danube. It is a weeklong festival that happens every August. It started in 1993 and by the end of the 1990s 250,000 people were making an appearance to this, originally, rock festival and once the millennium hit, the festival had transformed into a festival with a 390,000 capacity, with half of the attendance being from outside Hungary and with the music as varied as all the countries in the world. Having only attended UK festivals in the past, an early August festival left me dubious as to what weather to expect, but going to an Eastern European country in summertime means warm weather of course! For the first time in my festival life, I welcomed the sporadic rain showers with open arms, basked in 30 degrees for an entire week, and enjoyed a monumental thunder and lightening storm somewhere in the middle of it. We were a Guernsey crew of 4 but I had been to the French Alps that April and made friends with a guy who also came to Sziget, so our team of 4 turned into a party of 11. We could not have asked to have met a nicer group of people. We immediately became a festival family and enjoyed what was about to become one our top festivals. The headliners that year were brilliantly diverse; Buena Vista Social club, DJ Shadow, The Gotan Project, Faithless, Iron Maiden, Muse, Infected Mushroom and Shantel & Bukovina Club Orkestar, to name a few. There was a World Music stage - which we camped next to, so had the chance to hear Buena Vista Social Club sound check (there is certain magic about hearing a band sound check, I suppose it’s because it’s a tease into what you will be hearing later that day in its full glory) - the Main stage, the Rock-Metal stage, the Europe stage, the Party Arena stage and my favourite, the Roma stage. The band, Shantel and the Bukovina Orkestar turned out to play the genre we sought after for the entire week at Sziget. They are a band that play Balkan music. Their show was absolutely rocking, no other way to describe it. The lead singer, Shantel, was a gypsy version of Freddie Mercury, with tight trousers, guitar skills and crowd entertainment down to a tee. He was hilarious. They are obviously loved throughout Europe, as the crowd was 10,000 strong, all singing along to their songs. Amongst them was a song called Disko Partizani, which everyone went mad for. They were great fun

and with a 9piece orchestra behind the vocals it was impossible not to see their brilliance. We muscled our way to the front of the stage and danced our socks off! Shantel is a German DJ from Frankfurt with Bukovina (in short, a minority ethnic group from that was split between Western Ukraine and North Eastern Romania up until the 1940s) German Romanian decent who works with the Bukovina Club Orkestar to perform, produce, DJ and remix Balkan music with electronic beats. So, this was a performance of traditional Balkan music with a techno-esque bass line to it. Balkan music is a high-energy, complex and rhythmical genre shared throughout 13 South Eastern European countries. With so many different cultures involved and so many bands made up of members from different countries, the creativity is continuously diverse. Bands of up to 12 people, with an array of musical instruments; trombones, trumpets, tubas, clarinets, guitars (acoustic and electric), drums, violins, incredible vocalists, energetic band members of all ages breaking into the most vigorous and impressive dance solos you can ever imagine to see in your life. Everyone in the bands could dance, and they were always eager to show the crowd what they could do. Then, with the crowd’s response to the bands energy, you were off, into a whirlwind of Balkan bliss. All musical and cultural tastes are catered for at Sziget. The atmosphere is electric and alongside all the musical choice there are so many stalls to look at, bars and cafes to sit in or random performers to watch who pop up in an open space to put on a magic or acrobatic show. The food, too, was brilliant, Romanian BBQ’s, Hungarian stews, French crepes, Spanish paellas and many more. Yes, we ate ourselves around the world at Sziget. You were never left wondering what to do or where to go, you were entertained the entire way through the festival, I could probably write a short novel on the week I spent there! In Gatwick airport, having just touched base on UK soil after this epic week we were making our way to the conveyor belt to pick up our luggage. Through the crowds a dusty, tanned and slightly tired looking guy was looking over in our direction and we made eye contact. He then thrust his hand high into the air and clenched his fist with a sign of victory in his eyes and smile. No words needed; we knew we had all been there, on our little Hungarian adventure. So, if you ever have a free week in August, get to it, Sziget it. I might see you there.
“
WE MUSCLED OUR WAY TO THE FRONT OF THE STAGE AND DANCED OUR SOCKS OFF!

summer of
LOVE
Festival fashion is a decidedly different gig to your day-to-day style choices. You want to enjoy the music, the sun and perhaps a cider. So you should also enjoy what you’re wearing. Dressing for a festival is an excuse to take a joy ride down memory lane to childhood raiding of a dressing-up box to invent an eclectic creation to wear. The Woodstock hippies of ‘69 left us with peace, love and a fashion legacy. It seems like more than coincidence that headbands, fringed garments and the peace symbol crawl out of the woodwork around the festival time. Thank you Janis Joplin for flared sleeves, embellished hair and circular specs, but mostly for your layering style. If it’s warm you can peel off layers to reveal a flowery River Island bralet with your high waisted maxi or, if it’s chilly, pile them on again, plus a shawl. Evenings can get darn cold. I’ve been known to take along a sheepskin jacket, woolly hat and Mexican blanket for evening warmth and escapades. Leggings are also a necessity to throw on under a pretty floral grunge tea dress for day to evening transtion.
FLURO FOOTNOTE This colour pop is on trend for the summer season, from neon green nails to pink New Romantic style t-shirt prints, pom poms and face paint. George (of Asda fame, who are hitting our shores soon) has a steal on a yellow fluro vest top. Juxtapose with a Miss Selfridge or Republic tasseled shawl and pork pie hat for a texture heavy look.
GIVE IT THE BOOT
Comfy footwear is essential for your weary festival feet. Havaianas have created a Rain Boot range to complete the all year round ‘always summer’ spirit in flash colours. Joules have gone with polka dots and prints and Hunter can always be trusted to provide trendy wellington style á la Kate Moss. Anything from Converse sneakers and espadrilles to Ipanema flip-flops and boots go. Black biker boots or Doc Martens go perfectly with the festival piece of all time… the denim cut-off. Faded, bleached, torn, studded, printed, exposed, rainbow coloured, dip-dyed and distressed. Denim shorts, as long as they are tiny, are de rigeur this festival season.

MEN
purple HAZE If you want to leave the flares, tasseled top and purple bandanna to Hendrix then at least add a colour pop to your festival get-up. Maybe chino shorts are your style but you could opt for a colourful variation instead, like an aqua pair from Burtons, for day to night wear. Perhaps team with a logo t-shirt (loving ‘Your Tent Or Mine?’) and a pair of Toms espadrilles for summer style.
FOLK THAT
FESTIVAL FASHION
FASHION
With several big name festivals even encouraging a bit of eccentricity, we can draw inspiration from the acts themselves. Take a bit of folk fashion from Mumford and Sons in waistcoats, denim shorts (comfy, durable and suitable for most conditions) and a tilted trilby hat. Desert boots are also perfect for slobbing 'round a festival site or maybe pull on some navy desert botas from Toms, which are a high-top shoelaced version of their classic design.
For more quirky inspiration take a look at Man Like Me, the electro trio band who could get away with performing in everything and anything. Not averse to wearing vintage shell suits, 3 piece pastel suits or using an umbrella without the rain, this band is the king of kooky. Easy to emulate their style in an overly printed shirt, skinny pink jeans and hightop Nike trainers. If drainpipe jeans are more your thing, compile a layered outfit with tank top and checkered shirt (good for hiding dirt.) Fluros are also trending throughout menswear as well. If you’re not brave enough to wear it as a garment colour, Casio have a Retro Watch Collection in a range of day-glo neons. For a stacked wrist look add a bunch of arm bracelets in acid colors from River Island to brighten up your look.

If you need a checklist, the following are probably a festival’s most essential kit: Waterproof: A bright yellow raincoat from ASOS means your friends can’t lose you in the crowd. Pockets: you’ll need somewhere to carry tickets, cash, phone and gum. Sunnies: Wayfarers are the sunnies of choice for most festival goers. Hoody: A cosy hoody for the chilly evenings.

ALL CREATURES GREAT & SMALL

Great & Small
{Stop and Smell the Flowers} For your summer getaway, you could pop a Cath Kidston travel wallet in your tote. Famous for her oilcloth designs, Kidston has created a variation of her floral design and added a songbird surrounded by buds.
{The Birds and the Bees} Let bees buzz around your fingers with a gold version of this little creature placed atop a coral, art deco ring from asos.com.
words | Ella Cloud
The spring chill has finally shifted from our bones and the summer has set in. And what better way to celebrate our sunshine season than to pay homage to the little creatures that we associate it with.
Another holiday essential is a pair (or 3) of sunglasses. Take inspiration from A-Morir’s flower adorned specs and go for pastel shades to mirror the catwalk trends. Or, you could explore Folksy. com (the UK version of the popular US craft website etsy. com) to find a vintage style ornate black ring with the little honey maker holding on. Whilst in Gwyneth and Grey I discovered the label Inoui. With a sweet little blue gem insect dangling on a necklace, they have feminine jewellery design down to a tee.
Trending this season are also thin gold ring bands. 5 Octobre. who can also be found in-store, have created a collection of thin rings with coloured stones, so delicate they look like they might snap. Stack them up on your fingers for a pile of gold style.
{Of Mice and Men} Charms are also the perfect way to collect little creatures and can be attached to bracelets, necklaces and even anklets. Found in jewellers across the Island, My-D (Becky Rowe Jewellery) have created a bold little mouse in a variety of precious metal.
Jot down special moment memories in a bug adorned entomology notebook from the originof-style.com. Printed with French illustrations of insects from 1849, these wonderful leather notebooks have been crafted in England, filled with beautiful textured Italian paper and completed with a delicate black ribbon. A loose, soft scarf is also a versatile piece for vacation times and can double up as a sari for the beach or shawl for the evening. Next do a floaty blue floral design whilst Anthropologie have gone for crepuscular rays in pink and orange, offset with a grey background.
To channel flowers in a subtle way, spritz with Tokyo Milk’s Gin & Rosewater scent from a beautiful pink flower print bottle.

SEA, SAND AND SUN
words | Nichole Sweetsur
SEA, SAND >> HERE’S OUR GUIDE TO
Whether you’re jetting off to sunnier shores or simply heading down to Cobo slipping on some sunscreen should be part of your pre-beach ritual. The bad news is that over exposure to the sun can lead to skin cancers and will most definitely cause premature ageing of the skin. The good news is that there are so many sunscreens to choose from, you’re bound to find one that you’ll love.
Choosing the right sun protection factor or SPF is the most important step. Dermatologists agree that it isn’t advisable to use anything below an SPF15 but don’t be lulled into a sense of false security by the high sun protection numbers. A SPF50 only gives you marginally more protection than an SPF30 and whatever product you buy the crucial factor is how you apply it and how much. Nurture skincare’s cosmetic nurse, Julie Brackenbury explains: ‘An SPF 15 product blocks about 94% of UVB rays, an SPF 30 product blocks 97% of UVB rays, and an SPF 45 product blocks about 98% of rays. Don’t be confused by the numbers, I

Worth trying if you suffer from prickly heat as this has been formulated with a special ingredient to help skin’s defences against the sun.

tell my clients that applying plenty of product and reapplying it frequently are key to staying safe in the sun.’ Sunscreen must be applied 20 minutes before going out in the sun, this is especially important here as the typical Brit will burn in about 20 minutes of exposure in the midday summertime sun. Applying the right amount also has a huge impact on how effective it will be at protecting your skin. ‘Use a 50 pence piece amount of sunscreen per area of your body. One area being each leg, each arm, chest and neck, tummy, back and face. Don’t forget your extremities such as feet or ears,’ explains Julie. Men

who are ‘folically challenged’ should always remember to apply plenty of sunscreen to their head, a spray is good and works well over thinning hair or, even better, wear a hat. Julie Brackenbury also recommends reapplying sun screen frequently: ‘Don’t think the sunscreen ritual is a one-off event, keep reapplying it every two hours and always after you’ve had a dip in the pool or sea.’ Whether your holiday plans involve sunning yourself on exotic shores, basking in the Bahamas or just catching the waves at Vazon.

AFTERNOON TEA
GALLERY, ORCHARD PR AND CITV ENJOY AFTERNOON TEA! The Farmhouse is famous for its stunning location, excellent food and fantastic service and more recently for its luxury afternoon tea. Gallery Magazine was invited to trial the luxurious afternoon tea at The Farmhouse along with some friends from Orchard PR and CITV and not wanting to do things by half we sampled the luxury menu, available at £49.95 per couple. After a hard day at the office it was a relief to be greeted with a glass of pink champagne and left to mingle until our table was ready. We were led out to the garden where a Gazebo had been carefully set up for us. The afternoon tea selection is a mesmerising sight; the careful arrangement of the savoury éclairs, sweet selection and salad shots is simply mouth watering. There is something for everyone on the platter and you are spoilt for choice – you definitely won’t be leaving hungry! Staff are courteous and attend to your every need, leaving you settled and comfortable to casually graze on the platter and enjoy copious amounts of tea and coffee. Gallery and friends had a fantastic time at The Farmhouse and would definitely recommend the experience! Its perfect for a special birthday, occasional treat or to spoil that someone special – head down to The Farmhouse today! 82

WHAT DID WE THINK? It was the small details that made it so special, from the tiny éclair sandwiches to the little shot glasses of salad everything about the set-up was unique. There was a huge selection of teas to choose from upon arrival and this was after we’d already been sipping on the pink champagne! The staff were extremely friendly and catered to our every need, overall a lovely day and I would recommend it to anyone looking to celebrate a special occasion.” Harriet Black, Orchard PR “The luxury afternoon tea at The Farmhouse takes a traditional British pastime and puts a modern twist on it. The three-tier display of treats, pink champagne and choice of teas really is an extravagant sight for any afternoon tea lover. Gone are the cucumber sandwiches and in their place, shot glasses of salmon and chicken salads and a selection of savoury éclairs offering a mix of flavours you wouldn’t normally think of combining, but they really work! The sweet treats also do not disappoint with scones and fresh cream and jam along with Battenberg and fresh cream éclairs on offer. The perfect summer afternoon indulgence.” Brooke Kenyon, Orchard PR ‘The luxury afternoon tea at The Farmhouse was a feast for the eyes and the tummy – we were wowed by the selection of cakes, savoury treats and salad shots. They didn’t disappoint on the taste front and were delicious washed down with a glass of pink bubbles.’ Gillian Mabbett, Channel Television The luxury afternoon tea, enjoyed in one of the gazebos in the grounds of The Farmhouse Hotel was fabulous. Tasty savoury eclairs and delicious fresh salads served in glasses were a nice change from sandwiches. The variety of cakes was impressive, lots of different flavours to enjoy and washed down with a glass of pink champagne - what a treat. A perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon, and perhaps into the evening as the gazebos are heated too!
WHY NOT TREAT SOMEONE? Have a special birthday, anniversary or occasion coming up or simply fancy something a bit different? Why not treat yourself to Afternoon Tea at The Farmhouse and if you really want something special you can always upgrade to a luxury afternoon tea and sip the afternoon away!

WORLD BAR CRAWL
dwarfs have been rescued from the slums and streets of Manila and employed with new cultural identities. They are all friendly entertainers who will happily pose with tourists for photos!
In search of the worlds wackiest bar crawl? Well we’ve picked out some of the most eccentric, strange and exciting venues for you to test out on your travels. With some extreme gimmicks, there is bound to be at least one that takes your fancy, so take a look at these.
Inside this 72-foot high, 6,000 year old Baobab tree there features a unique bar complete with dartboards and benches. Originally created to keep locals content, tourists now travel from miles around to have a beer in this remarkable creation.
words | Analise Trotter
CLINIC – SINGAPORE
Designed by the quirky artist Damien Hirst, the décor in Clinic may be a little questionable for some! Featuring interlinking pill shaped rooms with hospital attributes, guests can drink from test tubes and IV bags whilst chilling out on the hospital beds. Alternatively if you’d prefer to be slightly more civilized they provide wheelchairs as a substitute to bar stools. This is all before heading to party on the capsule-shaped dancefloor in ‘Morphine’ their very own nightclub.
RED SEA STAR UNDERWATER RESTAURANT, BAR AND OBSERVATORY – ISRAEL
Submerged six meters below the Red Sea in Eilat, the Red Sea Star is the world’s first underwater bar. Diners can experience submarine views of coral, fish and all of the unusual sea life through plexiglass windows surrounding their table. The décor sticks to the marine theme with urchin cushions, jellyfish stools and anemone light fixtures to name just a few.
HOBBIT HOUSE – PHILIPPINES
Based around the J.R.R. Tolkien trilogy, “Lord of The Rings”, the Hobbit House in the Philippines has a team of friendly dwarf bar staff to cater to your every need. Filled with dark smoke, 100 different kinds of beer and fantastic live music the atmosphere certainly reflects the film. The 84

BAOBAB BAR – SOUTH AFRICA
FLOYD’S PELICAN BAR – JAMAICA
“That cannot possibly be a bar” would probably be your first reaction upon setting eyes on Floyd’s Pelican Bar. Balanced on stilts and made completely from driftwood and palm leaves this is hands down the wackiest bar in Jamaica. Transported there by local fisherman, you can snorkel through the day whilst enjoying a nice cold beer and a freshly prepared meal made by Floyd himself. Bring a sharp object along to carve your name into the wooden floor, and create a memory of your travels.
ALUX RESTAURANT & LOUNGE – MEXICO
One of only two restaurants across the world that is located in a cave, the Alux in Mexico is riddled with an interconnecting system of caverns and subterranean rivers amongst the stalagmites and stalactites. With great resemblance to The Flintstones there is a variety of rooms to drink and dance through, lit in blues, pinks and purples to create that underground atmosphere.
LAGOON BAR – ICELAND
The Blue Lagoon may be known to many as a pool for soothing heat and minerals, however did you know there is also a bar? Bikini-clad waitresses are on hand to serve you a variety of tasty cocktails, and of course in keeping with the healthy spirits of the location there is also thick Icelandic yogurt available to test whilst your soaking in the 100-degree milky-blue water. THE FARMHOUSE SUMMER OF JAZZ

GALLERY and friends enjoyed a fun evening out at The Farmhouse to enjoy their Summer of Jazz session on Friday 8th June, featuring Alan Barnes, Alto Saxophone. The Farmhouse is the perfect location for any event; it is renowned for its weddings, fine dining, luxurious lunches and afternoon teas, chilled dip and dine by the pool and most recently its funky jazz nights. Upon entering the farmhouse for the evening you are greeted with large silver platters of delicious canapés and copious glasses of champagne, perfected for relaxing you ready for a night of cool entertainment. Whilst waiting to go into the dining room you have a great chance to mingle and watch the musicians setting up for the night. Tables are carefully positioned in the room and you have a view of the musicians wherever you are seated. The music starts almost straight away and with the excited natters of guests a wonderful ambience is created.
Special guest Alan Barnes played a live saxophone set to diners, whilst they sat back, relaxed and tucked into their delicious fourcourse meal. There is a vast choice of food available to suit every palate and it tastes absolutely amazing, there were clear plates all round and lots of empty bottles of wine too! It certainly didn’t take long for the dance floor to come to life with guests more than happy to show off their jazz dancing skills later on in to the evening after a few bottles of fine wine. The performances were brilliant and created a great vibe for dinner with friends – highly recommended for a night out with a twist!

UNCORKED & UNCOMPLICATED
UNCORKED & UNCOMPLICATED words | Viv Pallot
“There are few things more pleasant than a picnic eaten in perfect comfort,” wrote Somerset Maugham back in 1944. Well, it’s probably psychological, but dining al fresco on a hot day or balmy summer’s evening, makes everything taste so much better in my opinion. It might explain the popularity of beach-front and pavement cafés around the world, but here in the Channel Islands our summery days aren’t always guaranteed - so do bring a brolly to your picnic, just in case!
A
ssuming you’re happy with the weather forecast, you can begin to plan your picnic. Dust down the picnic hamper from the attic and scour the Internet for inspiration on what food to bring along. Nigel Slater’s picnic recipes are always colourful, tasty and
surprisingly easy to prepare, for example. And now to the wines… I will focus here on “summery wines” that taste great when chilled ready for a picnic: light-weight, young, fresh, happy, zippy, sunshine-in-a-bottle wines; be it Champagne, sparkling wine, white, rosé, or even light-weight reds. I will leave the voluptuous, robust wines that better accompany a BBQ for another time. For picnics, we all know that portability is paramount! So unless you wish to lug along a heavy wine-cooler or bags of dripping ice, use a gel wine-cooler bag or frozen wine cooler sleeve for sheer convenience. Remember to chill the wines for at least 90 minutes in the fridge beforehand and to bring wine glasses (and a corkscrew if necessary*). You can now purchase plastic wine/champagne glasses that are delightfully elegant and some wines are even available in plastic bottles – at one eighth the weight of a glass bottle of wine, and amazingly, more eco-friendly, they have to be worth a try. Even if your wines are low in alcohol, don’t forget to pack a bottle of water unless there’s a stream nearby that’s safe for drinking (or better served for chilling your bottle perhaps!). It’s worth noting that a litre of water weighs a kilo, so try to economise in weight in other areas. Champagne and Sparkling Wines: A pretty safe bet would be Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial Non Vintage Champagne (pronounced “Mo-wett” never “Mo-way”). If you wish to keep costs down, however, try a sparkling white or pink fizz instead. There are some
88
Festival.indb 88
fabulous sparklies from around the globe, ranging from cheap-andcheerful to those that rival Champagne itself - ask your local wine merchant to recommend something special. And if you’re having strawberries, then Moscato d’Asti is a brilliant match. White Wines: If your hamper contains seafood, then a zesty (French) Picpoul de Pinet, or a youthful, aromatic Albariño from Spain, or floral Californian or native Italian Vermentino (which I consider more interesting than the ubiquitous Italian Pinot Grigio), or even a crisp Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc, would all be terrific partners. The Riesling varietal varies enormously from region to region, but is enjoying a renewed wave of popularity right now and is incredibly versatile with food. Roasted, cold chicken drumsticks
could also be paired with lovely, chilled Chablis (Chardonnay), but it’s all a matter of preference really. Rosé wines: These are really popular in the summer time and range from light (French Provençal, for example) to the more intense, sweeter versions (e.g. Californian White Zinfandel/Blush), with plenty to choose from in between. There’s something quite special about sipping a chilled glass of rosé wine that evokes memories of summer days on the terrace overlooking the sea! I think rosé goes particularly well with slivers of picnic quiche, but arguably, it’s the wine that best sums up the whole al fresco concept. Lightweight Reds: If you’re planning on bringing mini-pizzas, then a Chianti (Sangiovese) would be great, as it is with any tomato-based foods. Mini sausage rolls, or tiny cocktail sausages, go rather well with a gently chilled Tempranillo. For charcuterie, consider too the Gamay-based wines such as Beaujolais (Fleurie, for example, is lightweight and can be chilled ever-so-slightly for even greater pleasure on a hot summer’s day in the countryside). If you like a Pinot Noir (dubbed “sex in a glass” by Master Sommelier Madeline Triffon!) then consider some young German Pinot Noir (“Spatburgunder”) or Californian Pinot Noir for interest. (Incidentally, the movie “Sideways” was probably partly responsible for converting many to Pinot Noir and away from Merlot!). Anyway, here’s to hoping for glorious sunshine for your picnic and a really fun al fresco experience! *View YouTube solutions on how to open a bottle without a corkscrew. GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

In turn, this has resulted in an impressive project portfolio, including one of the London Olympic pools in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games.
By moving away from traditional methods of swimming pool construction the images seen page after page in exotic holiday brochures can be achieved more quickly, simply and cost effectively without the stresses of packing or travelling and without having to leave your friends behind. We are always being reminded how precious water is, and for an industry that depends on its presence, minimising leakages or, in Renolit’s case, completely eradicating them is critical in helping to minimise water wastage. Deceptive to the eye, the seemingly conventional tiles do not embody any of the characteristics of traditional mosaic tiles (or their price-tag) and therefore, the demands for re-grouting and re-painting do not feature in this new technology.

Locally, the first island school pool to be refurbished by Sarnia Pools earlier this year was St. Martin’s Primary School. Pool users have also been able to benefit from the ‘cushioned’ wall effect generated by the materials in the pool liner which help to create a safer environment for children to swim and play in. Make your lifestyle dreams watertight this summer by choosing the intelligent alternative to traditional methods. Whether you are looking to put in your first swimming pool or wish to find a cost effective solution for renovating an existing one, call the friendly Sarnia Pools team on 727005 and make sure you swim smarter this summer.

CICRA APPOINTS
NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE
JT IS AHEAD OF EUROPE ON
DATA ROAMING RATES Ahead of the introduction of a reduced price cap on roaming charges across Europe, JT has launched a new roaming solution to help islanders significantly reduce their data roaming costs.
The new EU Regulation on roaming charges is due to come into force on 1st July 2012 and will further reduce the wholesale price capping of charges between European operators with savings then passed on through a new capped retail pricing. However, as the Channel Islands are not part of the EU, JT and its customers cannot benefit from what is referred to as wholesale price-capping. To address this issue and help keep down the cost of using mobile devices while travelling, JT has extended the terms of its roaming bolt-on to ensure they can provide their customers with a data roaming solution. Cara Murphy, Head of Roaming at JT said, “At JT we are committed to continually reviewing our roaming rates and we work hard to negotiate lower wholesale costs with all International operators, to offer customers competitive rates. We are listening to customers and providing innovative and value-led solutions which provide a cost-effective way of managing data roaming charges. So, the new data bolt-on not only brings the cost per megabyte well below the EU capped price, but one month earlier as well meaning that JT is actually ahead of Europe!” It is estimated that the new EU regulation means European providers will be providing data roaming to consumers at around 59p per Mb. JT’s mobile data bolton costs just £5 per month and customers will be only be charged 50p per Mb of data used when travelling throughout Europe. In addition, thanks to an agreement between JT and AeroMobile, customers travelling with Virgin Atlantic on the routes where it is offering in-flight mobile phone calls, texts and web access, can enjoy the new service and favourable roaming rates. Virgin Atlantic is the first airline in Britain to offer this service which was launched in May 2012 on the London to New York route. JT also provides advice online at www. jtglobal.com about managing roaming charges and offers a free text service to warn customers when they are accessing data when abroad.

CAREY OLSEN PROVIDES
The Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities (CICRA) have appointed Andrew Riseley as chief executive, replacing John Curran. CICRA, which encompasses the Guernsey Competition and Regulatory Authority (GCRA), formerly known as the Office of Utility Regulation, and the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA), made the appointment following an extensive recruitment process.
VIDEO GUIDANCE ON GUERNSEY’S NEW INHERITANCE LAW Carey Olsen has produced an advisory video to help Guernsey residents to negotiate the island’s new inheritance law, which came into force last month. It is available online now at http://www. livinginguernsey.co.uk/inheritance.html.
Carey Olsen advocates Davey Le Marquand and Russell Clark said that the new law presents challenges and opportunities that did not exist in Guernsey previously. They encourage Guernsey residents to carefully consider how the new law affects them and their families. The new law allows for complete testamentary freedom which means that a person can leave their property to whomever they wish, bringing Guernsey into line with English inheritance law. It also allows for claims in the Royal Court for a share (or increased share) in the deceased’s estate after the person’s death if they believe that they have not been reasonably provided for. “In a will you are going to want to appoint someone to administer your estate and give you peace of mind that everything is going to be handled properly,” Advocate Le Marquand said. “You need to give consideration to choosing the beneficiaries that are going to receive all of your assets and you need to look at the wider concepts of deferring your assets. A lot of family strife and conflict arises because the testator (the deceased) has not been open with their families about the provisions of their will and they come as a surprise to the beneficiaries,” he said. Advocate Le Marquand concluded that: “You are leaving family members and, in surprising them, resentment can come in and you are then leaving your family with problems which you probably tried to avoid in making the will. A lot of thought needs to be given to that.”
Mr Riseley will be overseeing further panChannel Island regulatory work as well as directing the regulatory activities on both islands. Mr Riseley is a competition and regulatory lawyer and has previously worked at large law firms in both the UK and Australia and in-house at a major UK utility. As part of his role, in Guernsey he will be in charge of regulating the telecommunications, postal and electricity sectors. In addition he will be leading the introduction of a competition law following the approval of legislation by the States of Guernsey. CICRA board chairman, Mark Boleat, said: “Andrew Riseley is ideally qualified to be the chief executive of CICRA. He came to the Channel Islands a year ago with significant experience in regulation and competition policy and has quickly used this experience to good effect while at the same time developing a thorough understanding of the special characteristics of the Channel Island economies. The aim of CICRA is to ensure that consumers across the Channel Islands receive the best value, choice and access to high quality services. Mr Riseley said: “It is an honour to be succeeding John Curran as chief executive of CICRA. Over the years John has strived to achieve a closer working relationship between the JCRA and GCRA through undertaking pan-Channel Island projects GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

where appropriate. Not only has this resulted in cost savings but it has provided consumers, and the companies we deal with, in the Channel Islands a more efficient and effective service. Going forward my priority is to continue to make this relationship work successfully.”
‘WHO’S WHO LEGAL’ NAMES
CAREY OLSEN GUERNSEY LAW FIRM OF THE YEAR Carey Olsen has again been named Guernsey Law Firm of the Year by Who’s Who Legal. Who’s Who Legal lists only the leading lawyers in each field based exclusively on the findings of an independent six-month research process. It is impossible to buy entry into this publication and only lawyers who score most highly according to the criteria are listed. Carey Olsen partners received enough nominations from their clients and peers to be listed seven times across four areas: private funds, banking, commercial litigation and insurance and reinsurance.
BUSINESS
P
atience is a virtue when it comes to most things but especially investing, as impatience can make investors consistently lose money. This can be a difficult quality to imbue oneself with however. When markets are as volatile as we have seen lately, with equities reacting strongly to the €100billion bailout package for Spain’s banks, or the Greek elections suggesting that tourists to the country will continue to pay with Euros for now, the euphoria has invariably lasted 24 hours. Capital preservation is more important in the tough periods than making money in one quarter and giving it all back in the next. Investing is about a longer time horizon and surely isn’t about what you make in the short term, but what you keep over the long term. We will perhaps see the contribution of more quantitative easing as the Fed presses ‘Ctrl + P’ again, which will provide a fix for markets, even if it is another temporary high. As it is international football season, this month’s column is in two halves. I know most of us have heard enough about Europe and especially Greece and the other PIIGS to last a while, but I think that it’s worth looking at our closest neighbour for a minute. While Greece was going to the polls, France’s Socialist Party won an absolute majority in the National Assembly. This will allow them to pass legislation without the aid of other members of the parliament. As socialists, they are highly likely to grow the size and power of the State.
GEOMARINE PROJECT CELEBRATES 2000TH CONTRACT
Geomarine has celebrated completing its 2000th contract in Guernsey. The civil engineering contactors were founded in 1998 by Ian Gilmour and Wedd Osmond. The company started with four members of staff and has grown to 57 employees, supported by subcontractors and hired labour. ‘The company’s core specialties are main drainage, geotechnical engineering, reinforced concrete construction, marine works and utility network installations. That diverse experience and expertise together with our innovation, attention to detail, investment in staff and in plant and specialist equipment has provided us with a fascinating record of projects,’ said managing director Chris Wrench.
When most European countries are extending the retirement age, Germany, for instance increased hers from 65 to 67, France has now lowered its retirement age from 62 to 60. This, while France’s unemployment rate is at its highest for more than 12 years. This must be somewhat worrisome for Germany, who have suggested lately that they are beginning to see their biggest western neighbour as more of a hindrance than a help in trying to solve the Eurozone crisis. France’s bond yields remain quite low for the time being, however, suggesting that the market does not believe there to be any imminent danger of Gallic default or bailout package needed. We will wait and see what Monsieur Hollande’s policies look like whilst tentatively working on a new acronym for a possible additional member to the parts of Europe that need extra refreshment. SPIFIG maybe?
‘We completed our 1000th project in 2005 and seven years later, we are celebrating our 2000th. The future looks just as promising with a healthy order book for all of Geomarine’s business segments and a growth in turnover is expected over the next 12 months despite the global economic uncertainty.’ Geomarine’s first contract, was the £105,000 slab extension of Rabeys Garage. Its 2000th was a small piling contract at Brickfield Quarry in St Andrew’s. Over the past 14 years, it has also worked on Admiral Park, Les Nicolles and Longue Hougue. The company celebrated its 2000th contract with a party for staff and clients, ‘It was important to us to celebrate this achievement with our hard-working staff and clients with whom we have built long-term relationships based on satisfaction and repeat business. The company’s future is very bright and our commitment to quality, technical excellence and integrity will provide us with the basis for continuing growth,’ said Mr Wrench. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

‘THE DOGS...” WINS
INTER-ISLAND YACHT RACE “The Dogs...” have won the 2012 Carey Olsen Inter-Island Yacht Race. Despite challenging conditions that tested the determination and skills of 54 participating yachts the Jersey boat skippered by Allen Brown completed the race, the most competitive in the Channel Islands sailing calendar, in a corrected time of three hours and 14 minutes. Following a good start the Melges 24 was able to keep pace with the larger boats in the fleet until Corbiere. The Dogs... hoisted their spinnaker for the final run into St Helier and were able to pull away from the rest of the fleet and finish first over the line and first on handicap. The rest of the top three positions were also filled with Jersey yachts; Less Xpense, skippered by S. Pearl, was second, and G. Machan in Lady Machela was third. It turned out to be a good day for Westerly’s, with the fourth, fifth and sixth placed boats all in that class. Chris Sharp, in his Westerly Centaur, finished fourth and as well as being the first Guernsey boat, he also picked up trophies for first Westerly and first bilge keel boat. Guernsey Yacht Club commodore Aden Clark said: “It was a very exciting race this year as the strong wind and rough sea conditions made it challenging for all the yachts that took part. Winning a race like this is a great accomplishment so many congratulations to Allen Brown and the crew of The Dogs....” Carey Olsen managing partner Alex Ohlsson congratulated the winning crew and all who took part. “The race was as competitive as ever and the sea conditions certainly tested all the participating yachts. This was our third year as sponsor of the biggest race of the year and we would like to congratulate all the crews who completed the course.”
GLOBAL ECONOMIC CONDITIONS HIT GUERNSEY BANK DEPOSITS The value of bank deposits in Guernsey fell £6.5 billion (6.1%) in the first quarter of the year. This took the total value of deposits held by banks in Guernsey down to £101 billion at the end of March 2012, which is a decrease of £11.8 billion (10.5%) year on year. Fiona Le Poidevin, Deputy Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance – the promotional agency for the Island’s finance industry, said: “It is disappointing to see this further decline in the value of deposits held by banks in Guernsey. Due to current conditions, we continue to experience an
“However, on a more positive note, there have recently been more inquiries from banks which have expressed an initial interest in establishing operations in Guernsey. It is still very early days but it is encouraging news and of course, comes in the wake of the announcement by HSBC that it will be consolidating its Channel Islands private banking operations in Guernsey. The quarterly report on banking sector activity from the Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC) said that the overall fall in value of deposits was the result of both declining volumes and exchange rate factors. In particular, Sterling strengthened against the US Dollar and Euro but weakened against the Swiss Franc, which had a negative effect on the level of deposits expressed in Sterling.
ACCOUNTANT HEADS FOR TANZANIA TO REVIEW TUMAINI FUND PROJECT An accountant from KPMG traveled to Tanzania to review the Tumaini Fund’s 2011 financial year accounts as part of the firm’s corporate citizenship program. Glenda Bosha, assistant audit manager, volunteered to help with the accounts and prepare them for their annual audit. This is conducted every year to international standards and written off by Tumaini Funds honorary auditor Roger Arundale and is a fundamental governance need for the charity. Miss Bosha left Guernsey 1 June and spent ten days in Kagera, in the north-west province of Tanzania, with Dr Susan Wilson, chairman of the Tumaini Fund. Having presented her strong case to the corporate citizenship team at KPMG, the firm agreed to give her time off to match the leave allowance she is using for the trip. “This will be a fantastic experience for me where I will be able to use my expertise in a way that truly makes a difference. The Tumaini Fund is involved in terrific work and I hope the trip will be enlightening,” said Miss Bosha. The charity relies on the support of an auditor each year and will be looking for a volunteer to fill this position in 2013. If anyone is interested in finding out more about this opportunity contact Dr Susan Wilson at yesunitumaini@yahoo.com. CHRIS
THOUME AUDIT ASSISTANT AT KPMG
What made you choose the company you work for?
I wanted to train with a Big 4 firm, and when I came to the KPMG open evening, I really connected with the people here. You spend a lot of time with the people you work with, so you need to get on with them.
What sort of professional training do you take?
ICAEW Chartered Accountancy training; this is taught by BPP in Guernsey, and involves 15 exams, with roughly a week of teaching and revision for each exam.
AGE: 23 UNI ATTENDED: UNIVERSITY OF BATH WHEN I WAS 8 I WANTED TO BE : CHEF FAVOURITE WAY TO RELAX: VISITING HERM ON A SUNNY DAY FAVOURITE PLACE TO EAT IN GUERNSEY: DA NELLOS FAVOURITE NOISE: WAVES
What do you do on an average day?
I spend most of my day at our Clients’ premises and I therefore have a lot of interaction with their members of staff, from Directors to Administrators. This is great, as you have to understand what they do and then piece together how the whole business operates. At my level, I am currently given whole sections of larger audits or entire smaller companies to audit. I will therefore have to work out how the business operates in this area and decide how I am going to test the numbers in the accounts. I can then go ahead and test these numbers to ensure that they do not mislead the readers of the accounts and report my findings to my manager.
What is your next step?
I hope to qualify in the next year or so and I will soon start taking control of larger audits and take responsibility for developing new assistants.
What advise would you give to yourself as a 2011/12 graduate considering the experiences you now have?
Get some work experience at an audit firm before you apply. This will help in a number of ways: it allows you to have a much better idea if this route is for you and it allows you to compare the different firms and see which one you prefer.

SHAMBLES RAMBLES
ATHLETICS Paul Ingrouille words | Shambles Rambles
Athletics is a collection of sporting events that involve either, or a combination of running, walking, throwing and jumping. After doing a bit of research the word “athletics” is derived from the Greek word “athlos” which means “contest” or “task”. How can I explain the running events? When the starters gun goes off in the 100m you just leg it and when you run a marathon over 26 miles tactics play a huge part. There are all sorts of races in between at varying distances. The running and indeed other walking, throwing and jumping events not only allow you to compete against others but also against your own personal best. There are all sorts of meetings and events scheduled around the world throughout the year, from the School Sports Day through to the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. That’s athletics in a nutshell. Easy eh?

ell it’s time to get to know Paul Ingrouille who has a fairly good sporting CV to back up a lifetime of playing and supporting Guernsey Athletics.
He first started competing at school as a 12 year old, in the 1970s, when Steve Ovett and Sebastian Coe were starting to come to the fore and the nation rejoiced in their epic battles. Paul has always been a distance runner and joined the GIAAC Club when the likes of Owen Le Vallee and John Allen were running things. Perhaps the highlight of Paul’s career was when he won the Individual Bronze Medal in the Half Marathon in Gotland, 1999. He started competing as a representative for the Guernsey senior team in 1980 and was still representing the Island in 2010. That’s 30 years of distance running and to bring us up to date he finds himself announcing and commentating at most of the Island’s major events. Paul also lists cycling and motor racing as two of the sports he likes to follow and says that he was a prominent member of the North B team, usually sitting on the bench, as a child.
What does it take for elite athletes to reach the top of their game and perform at international level? What demands does it put on their lives? Amazing demands! Just look at Lee Merrien, he makes so many sacrifices and so do the people around him. If you are an athlete, you are always thinking as an athlete. Athletics is okay but I think the pole vault is a bit over the top. Talking of the pole vault, how does a beginner practice it without ending up on top of their neighbours four-story town house? I can remember one of the meetings when Roger Brehaut won at a lower height than he could high jump! Everyone starts on the small poles. I am told by Alun Williams that you do the commentary at a lot of the local meetings. How many volunteers to do the GIAAC rely on to run a typical local event? We are very lucky that we have so many skilled and committed volunteers in our sport. In the recent Intertrust meeting we needed in the region of 30 helpers to make it function.
Today’s challenge involves both of us taking on something we are not too familiar with. Paul does look a good 8 stone lighter than me so I think I am at a slight disadvantage as the event is set to be the long jump. Never one to give in though, I summon up the courage to go first. A cheeky little 2.40m and I have to be please with that considering I have the turning circle of the Clipper Ferry. 3.52m from Paul and I realise that things might not be going my way. A few more goes and I end with a personal best of 2.81m, with Paul stealing the show with 3.67m. Great fun but when I was told that the current long jump world record is 8.95m it puts things into perspective. It really isn’t that easy!
I know you are a runner but, outside of what you specialise in, what is your favourite athletic event? It would have to be the long jump but the more I watch the more I like the hurdles
Time to sit in the stands at Footes Lane and have a chat.
Give me the names of a few up and coming athletes that we should be keeping our eyes open for in Guernsey and what events they compete in? Alistair Chalmers who is good all round, Peter Curtis and Sam Culverwell who are young sprinters and Zoe Fitch a javelin thrower.
If you were on a plane going the speed of sound and walked from the back of the plane to the front would you be walking faster than the speed of sound? Yes it’s all relative What is the best winning highlight of your career in athletics and what made that particular event better than winning other races? When I won the Island 1500m on a sprint finish in 1988 largely because it wasn’t really my event and I managed to get the tactics right. How easy did you find it to recover from competitions throughout your running career? In 1985 I can remember doing a half marathon and two days later a 3000m race. As I competed in my later years I had to take a week off! Obviously winning isn’t everything but nobody remembers a loser! What memory from athletics sticks in your mind, and won’t go away, that you would change if you had half a chance? I wouldn’t have had such a huge breakfast before I ran in the 1993 Island Game Half Marathon. I was in the form of my life and what a mistake that was! What aids are there to coaching and training currently that you can see have made a huge difference to your sport and wish you could have had access to when you started out? This facility at Footes Lane! What a place to train and compete alongside a proper strength and conditioning facility. When I was at school some guy in the sixth form was 50 seconds off the 5000m World Record, and athletics people came into the school assembly saying he’s a future Olympic hopeful. I was 48 seconds off the 100m World Record at sports day and everyone laughed and called me names. How satisfying is it to beat one of your personal best times particularly if it has stood for a period of time? It’s got nothing to do with your question but I remember at the Grammar School Sports Day in the mid-seventies the commentator (the much loved Ian Curle) announced that Martin Dorey had broken the World Record for the 100m. After much discussion they found someone had measured it at 80m, 20m short!

SPORT
Who is the one competitor that you have come up against who kept getting the better of you? There are two really, Marcel Le Clerc who had the edge over me in the 80’s and 90’s and by the end we were more or less equal and Alan Rowe who beat both of us!
Which Guernsey Athlete do you admire the most and why? I could name so many but for all round ability I have to go for Dale Garland How are we celebrating the launch of the Olympics here in Guernsey? Our celebrations started early when Lee Merrien was selected. The Torch Relay is in Guernsey on Sunday 15 July. Here is a question from Stephen Falla, Guernsey Squash. Not long ago I was watching some athletics at an important meeting and a girl was doing the long jump and she spiked herself and was injured. She was very upset and the doctor suggested that she didn’t continue to take part. Her coach said that she should continue and that she had trained hard for the event. Who makes the decision to continue in that scenario? Is it the coach, doctor or athlete? Once a competition has started the athlete has the right to override the coach. The rulebook makes little mention of coaches but you will notice that in international field events the coach has no access to the competition area - you will often see competitors exchanging signals with someone in the crowd. The event judge/referee has the right to withdraw a competitor but unless causing a health risk to others would normally refer to the competitor first for their decision. Ultimately if it is an individual event I’d say it’s the competitors decision and the pecking order is competitor, doctor and then coach. A question for next month’s motorsport interviewee please mate? I was at the petrol pumps the other day and was amazed by the price difference between “ordinary unleaded” and “super unleaded”. I seem to recall in the distance past it was a 2p/litre different. At the station I was at it was nearer 120p vs 110p. How does either fuel differ from that used in local motorsports events? If you want to find out more about local athletics or want to take part then visit the GIAAC website for more details: www.guernseyathletics.org.gg

TRAIN HARD, TRAIN SMART, TRAIN SAFE
n this month’s edition I’m going to be focusing on a number of factors that seem to get overlooked when it comes to muscle strength and development. If you have any interest in any sport participation then listen up. No matter what gym you walk into these days you will inevitably find people pushing reps out on the bench press, a few walking on an incline whilst holding on to the treadmill, some performing the kettlebell swing (Lordy only knows why) and a whole load of people that come to the gym day in and day out doing the same drawn out monotonous routines that get them to a place I call “nowhere fast”. Every single one of us knows that guy who knows better than everyone else and has the perfect routine for you that you should be doing because it works for him and the results have been amazing, according to him. A few weeks down the road you see him again, but only this time, he has a new amazing formula even better than the last one that never worked except this time his enthusiasm seems to have been dampened and his shape seems to have remained exactly the same. Let’s get one thing straight right now - there is no magic programme or perfect program – there is only a perfect program that may work for you right now! Trust me, it will only remain perfect though for a very short space of time, roughly until your body has adapted to the stimulus and even then that time frame will change dramatically depending on your training age. Basically this means that the longer you have been training the more you need to change the stimulus but be careful to make sure you stick to a certain style long enough for your body to make the necessary adaptations. The truth of the matter is there are two types of training programs out there: 1) programmes based on proven scientific principle and 2) programmes based on the meathead down the gym principles (and I include plenty of trainers that I know personally in that). Actually be to honest, both styles may be effective depending on what you’ve been doing previous to a certain period. If you have been sat on the sofa for months doing nothing and you then start doing something, anything – then yes, your body will react and adapt. That’s what the body is designed to do – adapt, get stronger or build muscle so it can perform that task easier in the future. The trouble is however after a short time, your body is no longer required to respond as it is already used to doing what it is doing and sees no need to grow new muscle. This is where the meathead science falls down and unfortunately, this is what around 95% of people at gyms are doing – no plan; no structure and really NO idea how to stimulate growth! It’s like throwing darts at the board blindfolded attempting to hit the bullseye. You might get lucky now and again but mostly you are just hoping for the best and realistically you are again heading for the place I call “nowhere fast”. When it comes to training in this fashion, I assure you that you have absolutely NO idea what variables you should be manipulating; in what order; how often they should be changed; how long you need to rest etc. You just go to the gym and “hope” you are going to develop! It really is as dumb as trying to save a million pounds without keeping track of your bank statements and ignoring your financial advisor’s advice. So wouldn’t you agree a program based upon scientific principle really is the best way to go in your approach? There are many variables you must begin to consider and understand if you really do want to be in charge of your physique. The following is a short list of a few: Frequency (how many workouts a day/week) Number of sets (per exercise/per workout/per body part) Reps/Speed/Tempo (how fast/slow you move load) Load (how close to your 1RM you are lifting) Duration (length of workout time) Mindset (mental approach & preparation) Like I said, there really is no such thing as that miracle program. There are only great phases you can go through but they really must be PERIODISED, ORGANISED and SEQUENCED intelligently. This is the secret to keep you developing strength and muscle. To go BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
Festival.indb 107
SPORT
without plateau is to combine a series of phases throughout the year – never to stagnate or become weaker but first you need to learn how to manipulate all of these factors. If there was such a program available, I assure you everybody would be able to bench press 500lbs and we would all be able to sprint as quick as the great Jamaican, Usain Bolt. As explained in last month’s edition, the key to successful training lies in variation and knowledge. If you ever find yourself unmotivated or bored in your workouts, you have to be able to firstly recognise why you have reached this point and secondly know exactly how to change things accordingly. The number one key is to firstly identify your goal and then determine which variables you need to be manipulating in order to achieve those goals. So if you want to become bigger and stronger, train for strength. If you want to become faster, then train towards speed. Likewise if you want to become leaner, learn about metabolic resistance training and get moving! Remember the more advanced you become, the faster your body will adapt to constant training and know if you consider yourself an advanced athlete, you do need to be changing your routine on a given muscle group every 4-5 workouts – 6 at the very most. While we are on the topic of the need for change, I will also point out the way people are starting to obsess about their nutrition. Don’t get too bogged down to believing that certain diets are the best or worst. This is always going to remain a hot topic but realistically there is only one best diet and that’s the one which is most beneficial to you at that point in time. Again this should revolve around your fitness objectives. People preach high carbs; low carbs, no carbs, vegetarian, vegan, trendy fad diets, carb cycling, low fat, no fat – the list is literally endless. Identify your goals and as long as it’s healthy and nutritious and it either creates a calorific deficit or other, then don’t sweat it. If it’s unhealthy and doesn’t either swim; fly; walk or grow, just don’t eat it. It really is that simple and remember to rotate your proteins and fats and ideally only use your carbs for fuel and you’re good! It’s not about who uses the most carbs or the least carbs – it’s about who uses carbs best – for fuel! Ok so I’ve spoken about some of the variables you need to manipulate so you can keep progressing in your training schedule. Another important factor you must try to understand is the strength training continuum, which really means choosing the appropriate repetition range you should be working in. Again, depending on your training goals, the lower the rep range you choose the more you will be looking for strength gains, keeping in mind your time under tension, load and rest periods. Working along that strength training continuum, be mindful whatever repetition range you work in will have a completely different training effect provided you know how to manipulate the time under tension, rest period between sets, number of sets and load. Your strength gains going from neural all the way through to metabolic will be affected so make sure you are aware of what you are trying to achieve before you begin a training plan because there are many different options going from maximal strength, relative strength, functional hypertrophy, hypertrophy – all the way through to strength endurance. So, depending on your sporting endeavours, be aware where you need to training along that continuum. At some point in your training calendar, you should include and incorporate all of these strength qualities as long as it’s periodised, organised and sequenced. Seek professional advice on exactly how to do this from either myself or any quality personal trainer on the island and there are options so make sure you get a quality explanation as to what they prescribe you before you start. If a trainer cannot explain in detail what he/she is asking you to do, then don’t do it. Everybody has their favourite style of training whether it be strength specific, sports specific; boot camp; group circuit training or individual or even classes, and, depending on who is selling what, they will tell you their way is best and what you should and shouldn’t be doing. Listen! It is your choice and if you are living healthy and active that’s all that matters. It is your body, your life – just make sure you always give it your best shot – then try and improve on that!

COCKNEY GUIDE TO THE OLYMPICS
Words | Shambles Rambles
JIM & BARBARA’S [TONGUE-IN-CHEEK COCKNEY GUIDE TO OLYMPIC SURVIVAL] My in-laws Jim and Barbara have lived in East London all of their lives. From the first time we sat down for breakfast and Jim asked me to pass him the Holy (Holy Ghost – Toast) and said he slept funny and couldn’t move his Gregory (Gregory Peck – Neck) I have been getting to grips with the Cockney dialect. Now what’s the Jude Law (Score) you might say? I thought through the power of Cockney Slang (with a few of my own thrown in) I could make sure your trip to the Olympics is one of your Hairy Chest (Best) experiences. Getting around East London really is a Glenn Hoddle (Doddle) and to make your Burt and Ernie (Journey) more pleasurable let Jim talk you through the dos and don’ts of Olympic survival. Don’t be Patrick Swayze (Lazy), get out with your Gareth Gates (Mates) to have a Butcher’s Hook (Look) at the Olympics in East London and familiarise yourself with one or two of the local Dragon Slayings (Sayings).

Jabbar (Car) or catch an Uncle Gus (Bus) from any Little Jack Horner (Corner). If you have watched your event then you could go to Euan Blair (Leicester Square) and pop in the Nuclear Sub (Pub) for a Shaun Ryder (Cider) or a nice cold pint of George Raft (Draught) Richard Gere (Beer). Most Ringo Starr’s (Bars) will serve Sajid Mahmood (Food) if your out for the Leo Sayer (All Dayer). Mind you, you don’t want to be spoiling your Brixton Riot (Diet) so watch what you have for your Frank Skinner (Dinner). If in doubt just have a Giorgio Armani (Sarnie) which will see you through. If you have a bit of a Constantino Rocca (Shocker) and visit an area you shouldn’t you could be making a Jaffa Cake (Mistake) and get yourself into a bit of Barney Rubble (Trouble). As Jim always says, “You’re well dressed in them parts if you’ve got two ears”. In the evening you could go for a night out on the Joe Brown (Town) and visit a club for a Jack Palance (Dance). It’s an Anchor Spreadable (Incredible) experience. Lots of people out, half of them Jenson Button (Mutton) dressed as lamb. It can be a Zippy and Bungle (Jungle) out there.
Whether you just want to go for a few Britney’s (Britney Spears – Beers), a spot of Brady (Brady Bunch – Lunch) or make your way to one of the Olympic events you need to read on – it could make your life so much easier!
Before you know it the Olympics will be finished and you will be Pope in Rome (Home)
If you’re a bit Peter Purvis (Nervous) about taking a Bowl of Chalk (Walk) around London then jump in your Kareem Abdul
And if it all goes Pete Tong (Wrong) then don’t blame me! Bye for now, Jakki Brambles (Shambles)

TEST DRIVE
Gallery test drives the new Hyundai Veloster Gallery was itching to get it’s hands on the new Hyundai Veloster from Barras Car Centre. The model we chose for the test drive was the 1.6 Sport 6 speed manual with all the extras. Extras included a snazzy reversing camera and 18 inch alloy wheels with colour coded inserts. There is a choice of colours from stock including: sleek silver, Veloster red, blue ocean or green apple - although other colours are available. We chose the green apple as we wanted a colour that would really make a splash as evening set in. Lowering into the Velosters sunken leather, sporty driving position is where you first experience the sculpted interior enhanced by the centre console. It’s at this point you remember how nice a brand new car with just test miles on the clock feels.

The first thing to get to grips with is the keyless start, it is so simple! You just put the clutch down. press the start button and you are away. If, like me, you don’t have this in your current car, it makes you feel a little like you’re Luke Skywalker. The car is very quiet and you can hardly hear the engine at tick over. Its when you put your foot down and get into the power that it has a nice sporty exhaust sound. The Veloster is very smooth through the gears and even though I got it into 6th gear in the trial, I don’t think you would need to use this much on Island. However, the 6th gear would really come into its own when taking the Veloster off Island. We have just been told that a 1.6 turbo engine option will be available in the autumn which will bring down your 0 to 60 time...
We loved the reversing camera, bluetooth sound system, sat nav, touchscreen media centre and the whole host of other funky devices - especially its three doors! The driver’s side has one door and the passenger side has a second for easy access to the back seats. The Veloster really is an all-rounder whether picking up groceries or picking up friends. The steering is a little light but you can feel the road nicely and as you head into corners there is no rolling. There is very positive traction and it drives really well, giving the driver an overwhelming feeling of confidence. The style of a coupé. The convenience of a hatchback. Impress your friends with its looks, the Veloster is different, it will get you noticed with its sculpted form with strong bold styling both inside and out. GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

CLEVER TEMPERATURE CONTROL FOR YOUR OWN NEST NEST IS A LEARNING THERMOSTAT
POWERTREKK FUEL CHARGER JUST ADD WATER?
The concept behind this very real product is still blowing my mind in a kind of future-arriving-early kind of way, but what this pocket-sized powerstation does is understandably ‘out there’.
According to the manufacturer, Nest helps you understand how your house uses energy so that you can save more, which is a welcome proposition in almost every home, I’m sure. It only takes a week to begin the thermostat’s training, after which it will alter the temperature to suit how you use your environment and even knows when you’re away so that it can adjust the heating or cooling appropriately. You’ll get a full lowdown of how much energy you’ve used or saved each week and there’s even the obligatory app for iPhone or Android so that you can monitor or adjust your home energy consumption on the move.
SEE NEST.COM FOR MORE DETAILS
FEELING THE GRIND?
Pour a tabespoon of water into it, let it breathe, and it supplys instant power to any device capable of being charged via USB. That’s right, just add water.
GRINDING BEANS AT HOME HAS NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD Simplicity is key with Bodum’s Bistro electric coffee grinder, which allows you to adjust just how finely or coarsely ground your roast of choice is with the twist of the hand. The grounds are then stored in a container made of borosilicate which, unlike plastic, is static free and more efficient at catching the coffee.
Using Swedish-devolped fuel cell technology, the clever hydrogen-oriented science packed into each ‘fuel cell’ reacts with the water to provide a current, so you won’t have to rely on solar powered chargers which, let’s face it, even at this time of the year aren’t going to be capable of operating at their best.
Thanks to their trademark silicon band the glass also has slip-proof qualities so no matter how wet your hands are or how butterfingered you tend to be, breakages are as good as out of the question.

NIKE+ FUELBAND
TRAIN HARDER, BETTER, FASTER & STRONGER Looking suspiciously like something that Guy-Manuel or Thomas from Daft Punk would wear down to the gym when they’re feeling a bit health conscious, there’s no denying it looks pretty tech-tastic as well as helping you track your exercise. Bonus. It’s a watch as well as a ‘fuel point’ counter, so the functionality isn’t limited to counting your steps. Whenever you’re moving, it’s rating the amount of fuel pointsyou’re earning and tracking it online to make keeping fit fun, and if you’re that way inclined, competitive too. Not earned enough fuel points today? It’s time to take the stairs instead of the lift after that lavish lunch. Or cigarette break. Not that you smoke, right? Calorie counting has never been so easy. It’s not just aimed at people who want to exercise more, but is also handy for those already running the morning marathon to work with a hometime duathlon every day too. Just don’t take it swimming as it’s only water resistant and not rated as entirely waterproof.

LYTRO LIGHTFIELD CAMERA
IT’S BOXY, BUT GOOD
Everybody with a DSLR is a photographer these days, apparently, but the variation in results between different so-called photographers can differ so wildly that they might as well be lightyears apart. Making your photos stand out from the crowd can be tough for the enthusiastic amateur, and with the easy to use post-processing capabilities offered by Instagram, Camera+ and the like all on your iPhone (other mobile telephones are available, incidentally) it may have never been easier.
It looks a bit like the illegitimate child of an old PowerMac and a white MacBook, but the Boxx is actually an electric bicycle. No pedals, just battery power and a mere metre long it boasts features such as a heated seat for those wintertime journeys as well as twin headlamps up front.
CHANGE YOUR FOCUS
Now though, there’s the Lytro Lightfield camera too. Compact and with the appearance of a tiny, cubic kaleidoscope, it has an extremely clever trick up it’s, er, tube. Capturing the entire light field that enters the lens as opposed to just a single plane, the images produced allow you alter the focus after having taken the shot using clever software on your Mac. Sorry Windows users, they’re still working on software for you guys. With no auto-focus, no shutter lag and no complicated modes to play with and no flash (it’s got an f2 aperture so is able to collect a phenomenal amount of light) the only thing you’ll need to adjust is the 8x optical zoom and the direction you’re pointing it in. This means capturing the moment you’re looking for instantly and with no fuss or need to fiddle about. The rear screen is an interactive touch screen as you’d expect from technology these days and there’s just one button on the entire device, cleverly positioned right where the camera’s centre of gravity lies to give a perfectly balanced feel in your hand.

MEET THE SOMEWHAT ODD-LOOKING BOXX BIKE
Also boasting that their creation is ‘0 MPG economical’ (which at first sounds absolutely terrible for the environment, suggesting it couldn’t even travel one mile on a gallon of fuel until you realise that it technically couldn’t in any case as there’s no fuel involved) they’re available in a host of different colours from stealthy black, grey and white to the vibrant pinks, reds, yellows and greens and take just an hour’s charging to transport you 80 miles if you go for the ‘upgrade’ specification. Power travels to both the front and rear wheels for extra traction and charging comes courtesy of a standard power outlet, although I’m guessing this means 110v as the Boxx is currently only available in the US. You’ll need a moped license to ride one on the street, mind, and whilst the Boxx is capable of travelling at a governed 35mph maximum, although I’m sure that with a little hacking this limiter could be raised slightly. At $3995 the Boxx isn’t cheap, but it’s definitely quirky as far as alternative transport solutions go.

I
Love Guernsey, I really do but we aren’t half a fickle bunch. Unlike many of my contemporaries you wont hear me moaning about having ‘nothing to do’ or needing to get ‘off the rock’ but if I was that way inclined the news of a local festival boasting a great lineup of popular and integral acts would be a huge relief. Unfortunately though that doesn’t always seem to have been the case, something I’m sure Jon and Paul Stephen are all too familiar with.
After the first year being fairly successful they decided to give it another shot and despite some pre-negativity about the line up and minor glitches over the weekend the festival this time around seems to have been a huge success. I arrived at the festival just in time to catch the last 10 minutes of Local favourites Teaspoonriverneck’s set. It’s never easy being the first band on but I’m sure the opportunity to play on such a great stage made it a much more pleasurable experience. The band were as solid as ever and ended with the popular ‘Eaten By The Devil’ which sounded colossal through the huge PA. I also caught the last few minutes of Jersey band Any Given Sunday who really impressed with their fusion of hiphop and rock sounds. As I made my way to the second stage (Centre Circle Stage) it became evident that the biggest improvement from last year was the new layout, with this stage being tactically positioned en route to the big top. During the saturday (when the sun was out) it was just as busy with onlookers as the main stage was,
though not as lively and there was a good atmosphere with plenty of blankets scattered around the (not yet muddy) grass. I got there in time for the beginning of China Aster’s set and a delightful set it was. They, like many of the best bands locally, tend to get overlooked - but overlook them at your peril. They have as much potential for greater things as any band in Guernsey and they backed that up with a good performance today. As the day grew on and the atmosphere transcended into a more ‘festive’ one, I decided to check out the facilities. Generally they seemed to have put a lot of thought into improving the set up. There were no big queues, even for the toilets which was their biggest problem last year. My qualm of the weekend though, was the VIP area. If I had been unfortunate enough to have paid for the privilege I would have been unhappy to find myself in a dingy tent with a load of hay on the floor (to cover up the mud) with loud music blaring and one rent-a-loo outside. The tent seemed isolated from the rest of the festival and a hugely disappointing waste of money. This regression was surprising after the success of the VIP area in 2011. With so many acts and various other things going on I couldn’t possibly comment on everything. I was thoroughly impressed with the Guernsey Festival this year and I sincerely hope it returns. Though us Guerns are stubborn, I do feel, like Jersey Live, these things take time. With the help of some sponsors next year I am hopeful that we haven’t seen the last of Jon and Paul, organisers of the Guernsey Festival.

THIS MONTH WE ARE MOSTLY SPENDING ALL OUR TIME AT THE GUERNSEY FESTIVAL
W
ith so much on offer at the Guernsey Festival, for this review I have chosen to focus on the local music that made up part of the show. Things kicked off with a bang on Saturday as Teaspoonriverneck opened proceedings with their blackglamgrooverock sounds on the festival’s main stage.
Despite the small number who had turned up early, the Spoons played a strong set mixing tracks from their new album, Do It Again, and classics from their back catalogue ending on the always-rousing Eaten By The Devil. With their sound still ringing in my ears it was time to head outside, where acts from Guernsey and Jersey formed the backbone of the day’s line up on the Centre Circle/Chaos stage. First up were Adam Powell, Jodie Webber and Iain Baxter who provided some spot on sounds for a sunny afternoon in a field. The acoustic three-piece played a selection of original tracks that may have been too low-key for the large area their sound was trying to fill on occasion, but, with songs like this already in their repertoire, they proved themselves an act worth keeping an eye on. Next came China Aster who, for a band who’ve only been together a little over a year and a half, have certainly become an act worth catching.
didn’t entirely work today, a dedicated group of young fans had gathered and lapped up the new tracks. As the rain stopped, Mt. Wolf kicked off the live music on the Centre Circle/Chaos Stage. Featuring a pair of performers from Guernsey amongst their number (on guitar, violin and vocals) the band sounded great with chilled out sounds combining acoustic folk-ish tones with electronic influences. The final live local act of the weekend was a collaboration between Guernsey based reggae MC Deemas J, local DJ Limey Banton and London based producer Wrongtom. While reggae of this nature isn’t something I’m totally up on, Deemas delivered an impressive performance, spending much of the set in front of the stage engaging directly with the audience and freestyling, while Wrongtom and Lime added the backing track to this with their own freestyle aspect. While the weekend had its ups and downs, Guernsey Festival proved itself a great opportunity for homegrown talent and, while Teaspoonriverneck and Last of the Light Brigade provided my highlights, all the local acts did Guernsey proud and showed quite how much talent there is on our small rock. You can see photos and videos from the Festival, and read my thoughts on the whole weekend, on my blog at http:// tommygirard.wordpress.com
TOM
The recent addition of a full-time bassist has allowed them to come into their own in terms of performance and today they played what was, to me, their most assured performance yet with a strong selection of original songs. With a new album recently released Last of the Light Brigade have been going from strength to strength over the past year and continued that upward trajectory this afternoon. Playing their second set as a four-piece (with the addition of Andy Coleman on keys) the band’s songs came through (despite a couple of issues with the sound which failed to spoil the set) and, ending on the storming Little Billy, provided one of my highlights of the whole weekend. Local music on the Sunday started off with CourageHaveCourage. These guys have played stages across the UK over the past year and took the opportunity of playing the Guernsey Festival to reveal a new sound and style. Adding synths to the mix has changed their style drastically and, while the reception to this has been mixed and, for me, BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

KING CHARLES
THE SELECTER
AN ECCENTRIC MUSICIAN WITH GREAT STYLE, HIS TIED UP DREADLOCK HAIR, GENTLEMAN’S MOUSTACHE TWISTED AT EITHER END AND SHIRT UNBUTTONED ALL THE WAY DOWN REVEALING TRIMMED CHEST HAIR.
FORMED IN 1979 AND ONCE DESCRIBED AS ‘CONSPIRING TO MAKE DANCING THE ONLY WAY TO WALK’, THE SELECTER LED THE SKA REVIVAL MOVEMENT, ALONG WITH 2-TONE LABELMATES, THE SPECIALS & MADNESS. MIXING PUNK, SKA & REGGAE, THEIR DEBUT ALBUM ‘TOO MUCH PRESSURE’ SUCCESSFULLY REFLECTED THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL ISSUES OF THE EARLY THATCHER YEARS IN BRITAIN AND GAVE A VOICE TO DISAFFECTED YOUTH ACROSS THE RACIAL DIVIDE.
HE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE ANYONE YOU KNOW, HE DOESN’T THINK LIKE ANYONE YOU KNOW AND HE DOESN’T MAKE MUSIC LIKE ANYONE YOU KNOW. HOW OFTEN, IN THESE DAYS OF NEAR FATAL OVER SATURATION, CAN YOU SAY THAT?
Gallery managed to grab a small handfull of interviews in-between the media frenzy.
G: I love your look, especially your moustache. What has influenced you the most in creating your individual style? KC: I source styles from different inspirations and things I have experienced, that’s where the style of it comes from. It has developed over time. G: My daughter played the cello, its an amazing instrument and is so visual when someone is playing it, but unfortunately she gave it up. I think that’s a shame... as a cellist yourself - what would you say to convince her to start playing again? KC: It’s one of the only instruments where there is a real physical union. You wrap yourself around the cello to make the union, you can really translate that into how you play and give it your own character through that relationship. It will mean much more to her in 10 years time so she should persevere. It’s all about flattering the future. G: How much do you think playing alongside Mumford and Sons helped your career? KC: A lot. They were playing venues then that I am playing now in England. They introduced me to a lot of their fans and then introduced me to their American audience. I must have played to 50,000 of their fans. This really opened up the American market which was fantastic - it helped spread my music. G: Are the stories about spitting cobras true? KC: Ha, how did you know about that? Yes they are, I was in Australia running down a hill with a friend and we were both wearing sunglasses. We slipped and I ended up sliding down the hill, I remember there being a snake and as it reared up I realised it was a cobra! It was moving its head from side to side and then spat out venom. I was lucky I had my sunglasses on! G: If you were to choose between cheese, jam or walnuts which would it be? KC: I would have all three; that is a good combination but if I could only choose one it would be cheese. G: Do you drink alcohol? If so what would you drink after a hard day whilst sinking back into a leather wing-backed chair with your crest-embroidered velvet slippers on? KC: Are we talking evening, before or after dinner? After dinner I would have a glass of Whiskey, Black Bush.

2011 SAW THE RETURN OF THIS MOST VITAL AND VISCERAL SKA ACT, REUNITING THE ORIGINAL SINGING DUO, THE FEMALE ICON OF THE 2-TONE ERA PAULINE BLACK AND THE STYLISHLY CHARISMATIC GAPS ‘DE KILLA’ HENDRICKSON, WHO ASSUREDLY DELIVER STUNNING PERFORMANCES OF CLASSIC HITS LIKE ‘ON MY RADIO’, ‘THREE MINUTE HERO’, ‘MISSING WORDS’ & ‘TOO MUCH PRESSURE’ ALONGSIDE NEW CUTS FROM THEIR NEW ALBUM, FOR BOTH OLD AND NEW SKA FANS. G: I am really excited that you guys are playing; I have been listening to your music on and off since the 80s. Guernsey is a small Island, what made you want to play here? S: People ask us, and if it sounds as if it is going to be fun and things like that, who wouldn’t want to come to a festival where the Kaiser Chiefs are playing, or Macy Gray will be on? It makes a change and we are looking forward to getting on stage. G: Who has influenced you in your music and lyrics over the years? S: Well for me personally [GAPS] I would say there is obviously reggae music and people like Toots and the Maytals, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, and quite a lot of rock music, Van Halen, stuff like that. I take influences along the way from everywhere really. G: Really, Van Halen? S: Yes I take influences from all types of music. G: Last year at Jersey Live Madness played and I was surprised at how young a lot of the audience was and they really appreciated them. How do younger people react to your music, especially the older stuff as they may not have heard it before? S: It’s great when people react to us straight off when they don’t necessarily know who we are, that’s actually a challenge. That’s actually better in some ways to have a challenge then to say, here they are, we know all their hits, because then it becomes like a karaoke thing. I just felt the whole point of getting back together again was to create new music and that’s what we did and toured last year and we have another album that is a mash up really of old and new stuff. What are you going to be playing tonight? We are going to be playing half and half of the new and old stuff pretty much, so something for everyone! GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

MAVERICK SABRE
THE CHARLATANS
LONDON BORN, IRISH RAISED, HIS NAME IS RINGING ROUND THE WORLD RIGHT NOW AND RIGHTLY SO. DESCRIBED BY BBC RADIO 1’S HUW STEPHENS AS THE “MALE AMY WINEHOUSE”, MAVERICK SABRE’S GRITTY YET SOULFUL VOICE IS DRAWING AUDIENCES IN AND LEAVING THEM HOOKED.
THE CHARLATANS HAVE BEEN AN INSPIRATION IN BRITISH ROCK FOR TWO DECADES, THEY ARE AS EXCITING TODAY AS THEY WERE WHEN THEY BROKE THROUGH WITH ‘THE ONLY ONE I KNOW’.
G: So tell us, what made you agree to come over and perform in Guernsey? MS: The offer came through and I didn’t even know Guernsey had a festival, but I like to try and go as many places as possible so I’m glad I could fit it in. G: What do you think of it so far? MS: I have actually only been here an hour, and only really ventured out the backyard. But from what I have seen it’s been great! The crowd seem really appreciative of the music and fairly up for it. Sometimes the best crowds come from places where music doesn’t come through that often, because you go to London and everyone has heard every act so they are like ‘impress me’ and that’s not the best crowd to play to. I’m really looking forward to getting out there and seeing how they react. G: You’ve played with some huge names such as Chase & Status, Professor Green, what was it like to work with amazing acts like this? MS: They were all really different experiences but Chase & Status are just something else, they definitely have to be my favourite. I’m going to be performing with them tomorrow at Hackney weekender as well. Chase & Status have just captured something with their music and their live set up. They have done something special and have found a great mix and energy, they are just timeless. For me, Chase & Status with Blind Faith & Liam Bailey they have made one of the dance classics of my generation, they are wicked. The energy and the crowd they pull every crowd is amazing, they have never had a bad or half-bad crowd its always been a great atmosphere and reception. G: If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be…? Dead or alive? MS: Hmmm, dead is quite a hard one, it would probable have to be 2pac Shakur and Bob Marley who are favourites of mine and also Jimi Hendrix and Ray Charles would be good to! Alive it would have to be Alicia Keys; I would love to do something with Alicia Keys. G: I recently heard your Radio 1 Live Lounge remix of ‘Beautiful Girl’ and ‘Stand By Me’, if you were to serenade me what would you sing?! MS: Singing to a woman… that’s a hard one!! I have done it, erm, I have done it before lots of times. I mean I have to, I look too much like Wayne Rooney and Phil Mitchell to just go off my looks, singing is the only thing I’ve got! G: Right, you guys are about my age so my question is how come you still have your hair? Is this whole famous rock star thing less stressful than a normal job? C: It’s really stressful, but it’s the genetics from your mother’s side of your family that affects your hair so that’s probably why. We must have all had good genes, we’ve got a great set of hair - there’s no Rooney’s here! There’s not much stress to be honest, writing music and being in a band is a piece of cake really! G: How do you find the energy from the crowd? You guys played at Wembley and also with the Who, how did you find your reception, it must have been amazing? C: We played with the Who at Swansea Football stadium and we played Wembley on our own. When we played with the Who at Swansea Stadium, the PA cut out during ‘Who are you’ twice! Apparently Roger threw his tamberine into the audience in a fit of rage, but we loved it! G: Obviously Tim’s solo career is probably not a great question to ask you about, but one thing that I was intrigued by that you might be able to help me with is his collaboration with The Chemical Brothers on Life is Sweet? C: I think that was more to do with back in the day, with mixing in certain circles that were the same. The heavily social Chemical Brothers Tom and Ed played at clubs and Tim used to knock around in that kind of circle of friends in that part of London around that time. I think they were looking for someone who could write good lyrics which Tim is known for, he writes great lyrics. It’s an awesome tune, the video is dodgy but the rest of it is good! G: If you were going to play music to a group of friends, what would be a couple of songs that you think you would go for? C: Experimental percussion music, it’s a wherever time kind of thing. He used to record buckets of gravel and glass being smashed at 78 beats per minute, if you can dance to that you can dance to anything! I like a lot of the late 60s early 70s, the temptations, Motown, Northern Soul, I know that is wide but stuff like that and maybe a little New Order. G: How minging was the weather at the Isle of Wight Festival? C: The news like to report on the most negative aspects on all situations, there was a bit of mud and the worse day was Thursday but that was the worst of it and it really wasn’t that bad. When you go to a British festival you’re either gonna get robbed, food poisoning or stuck in mud... but it was a good crowd and we enjoyed it.

REAL ALE & COMEDY FESTIVAL
FUNNY FEST!
ALL HAIL THE ALE!
riday 25th May kicked off the first fun-filled evening of this year’s Festival of Comedy, and we rocked up to The Rocquettes Hotel for their opening gala and garden party. The weather was warm and the beer and burgers served up were super yummy. We saw the show kick off with mountain of a man, Matt Price - who was as funny as he was large, and John Maloney - the master of the droll one-liner. We were off to a strong start. Sean Hughes headlined the next show I went to see - in the Beau Sejour Theatre this time. We were in for a most mirthful midweek night out. From the moment he stepped onto the stage, he had the audience properly howling at his portrayal of our Guernsey Evening Press “headlines”. Johnny Kats and Taylor Glenn who supported Sean did not disappoint either. I still had face ache the next day from laughing so hard.
island hopped over to Herm for the Saturday session of the Mermaid’s Real Ale & Cider Festival and was AMAZED by the turnout. This week long event is now in its second year and went down as the busiest in the history of Herm… like EVER! If the ales that flowed didn’t float your boat, the Mermaid bar was doing business as usual - and fantastic food up for grabs included BBQ, hog roast and Asian and Italian themed nights. Yum. From Wednesday onwards live music was performed by lively local bands. Add that to the ambient atmosphere and warm weather and you were in for a WONDERFUL time.

SURE FESTIVAL OF COMEDY
F
The open mic night was well attended and a bunch of brave jokers jostled the stage and amused us MOST of the time... Paul Kerensa compered for this one, and was perfect for the part. The last event I attended was on Friday 1st June – cozied up in the comedy sauna back at The Rocquettes with companionable compere Geoff Whiting alongside Pierre Hollins, John Gordillo and Iszi Lawrence. Three very varied acts, but hilarious none the less. I caught up with comedian collectors Andy Fothergill and Nick Creed who have been working on the comedy festival since its inception in 2007. As well as sharing the stage together when performing in the best band the 80s never had, Fade2Grey, they also share an office, and so their joint experience in marketing and PR serves them well when promoting.
HERM BEER FESTIVAL
I
Organiser Tom Jones (no, not THAT one) said that they had sold out of ale and cider by close of business on Saturday, meaning that over 4000 pints were put away! More than 1000 visitors had booked accommodation over the course of the weekend – and not just Guerns – there were also ale enthusiasts from the UK and Jersey staying in Herm – and they had travelled there for the festival. Due to this super successful summer event, Tom now plans to hold an additional festival over the weekend beginning 7th September this year. By popular demand, the next one will include more cider. They are hoping to serve some 30 ciders and up to 16 real ales alongside live entertainment like last time... See you there!
Both these guys work extremely hard to put on the best festival they can, but will readily agree that organising these events is also a lot of fun. “We have had some great times over the six years but believe me they have been matched by some really scary moments whilst waiting at the airport for flights to arrive. Luckily no one has missed a show yet - not that anyone has noticed anyway!” said Andy Fothergill. “We have now worked with over 100 comedians and still get a buzz meeting new ones. I guess it’s a bit like bird spotting in a way… we cross them off one by one,” he muttered ominously. After a few years of working with a small amount of support, Nick and Andy have kept going in the belief that one day the advantages of being associated with the comedy festival would become apparent to businesses. Sure enough, Sure have now come onboard which has made a world of difference to the boys - and not just in the financial sense. Marketing and PR Manager Jess Bisson has really given them great belief in what they are doing, and they plan to repay this by bringing even bigger and better shows to both Guernsey and Jersey. There is a chance they may choose to hold some shows in the smaller islands as well, but in the meantime, the next session of comedy kicks off at The Royal Yacht Hotel in Jersey on October 11th, for four great days of laughter. Names to watch out for there include Jarred Christmas and Phil Kay.

JERSEY FOLKLORE FESTIVAL

securing some secondary sponsors. Determined to prove itself as an alternative festival to the likes of Jersey Live, Warren hopes that after a couple of years the event will manage to build up enough sponsors by itself, as Jersey Live manages too.
The initial idea for the festival came about 4 years ago, when they organised Guernsey Live back in 2008. After this they were striving to create another event as successful as Jersey Live. Although they felt that when they ran Guernsey Live it was successful, they just didn’t feel it was supported enough to continue doing it. After Greenroots unfortunately went under last year, it was the perfect opportunity to get back onto the festival scene without over saturating the market.
Deciding on who to select to play at the Folklore was a fun task and after the past 2 years of Jersey Live they have seen acts such as Paul Weller and Madness sell-out so they realised there is a big draw for these types of acts. Their will be a variety of acts including local artists from Jersey, Andre De Carteret from Guernsey and Sark Band The Wrecks, just to name a few. The second stage will be taken to by a mixture of music, comedy and poetry acts for a change of scene. After running a very successful comedy club 10 years ago, Warren felt that this was the perfect opportunity to introduce this kind of act back to Jersey for crowds to enjoy.
The goal was to come up with an idea that was in contrast to Jersey Live and they realised that there was a niche in the older market desperate for these kinds of events. It also enabled them to include artists that you wouldn’t normally associate with other festivals, such as Ray Davis, The Kinks and Van Morrison, that you wouldn’t usually associate with the other festivals available. Planning for the event commenced way back in November, and, after a 3 and a half-month struggle to find the perfect venue, it was finally decided that the festival would take place at Peoples Park, St Helier. Creating an intimate atmosphere where crowds of 5,000 can sit back, relax and soak up all of the action. As it’s the 1st year the festival has been running, organisers have struggled to find primary sponsors. With no history or track record to the event, sponsors are sceptical about how successful it will be, however they have been successful

Warren ensures us he is not crazy to take on the mammoth task of organising another huge festival! He enjoys having a million and one things to do and consider, liaising, permissions etc is all part of the organisation but the most enjoyable part is booking the acts. Once they have confirmed them it takes a weight off their shoulders and they can enjoy the process of really pulling the event together. With headlines such as Van Morrison playing we hope the public sit up and take notice of this festival and make it the success it deserves to be!
