onjour mon amour, and welcome to another sultry, seductive, and down right racy edition of Gallery magazine.
After our couple of months hiatus from the shelves (we’re confident that absence makes the heart grow fonder) we’re back with a jampacked February special: the Lust edition. Of course, we have all the lust themed content you’d expect (a lingerie fashion shoot, our favourite quotes relating to lust, a run down of the sexiest places to eat, and a local take on aphrodisiacs) plus some beautiful uploads from our readers. We also have a panoply of local news and content: featured property, a review of Adam Ant’s last Guernsey performance (in honour of his imminent return to our shores), business news and our own special take on ‘celebrity fragrances’ to name but a few pieces. But let’s not rush into this – let’s take a minute to let the anticipation build and have a look at lust itself in all it’s passionate glory. When we think of lust, the first thing that comes to mind is raging sexual desire – bodies writhing and the intoxication of potent pheremones. But lust is really a more general term; it simply means a physically felt desire. You can lust after travel, knowledge, food, companionship… almost anything really. Lust unquestionably has a good side. Lust can spur us on in tremendous ways. As well as the simple fulfilling of desire (such as learning, marriage or skill) the yearning that lust instills in us can often produce some of the most beautiful creative work in the world. Poetry, music, painting and theatre all have a strong tradition of lust inspired work, and work that deals with the theme of lust. But, lest we get caught up in our passion, take a moment to consider the dark side of desire too. Think of Dr Faustus, whose lust for power saw him sell his soul to the devil. Lust is a powerful and thrilling emotion, but it’s one that must be tempered, and used to enrich one’s life rather than destroy it.

THIS MONTH WE ASKED SOME OF OUR CONTRIBUTORS A THEMED QUESTION... WHAT IS YOUR LUST FOR LIFE?
Jason Shambrook My copy of Lust for Life is stored alongside my other VHS tapes in the attic. Starring Kirk Douglas as Vincent Van Gogh, this 1956 classic sets the standard for a generation of films. “I tried to show a place where a man can ruin himself, go mad... commit a crime”, an iconic line in the film. And his ear fell off.
Viv Pallot My lust for life is multi-faceted! I’m an eternal optimist who loves a challenge. Wanderlust is my main escapism and a good travel book will keep me up all night. Other than that, I enjoy the love of friends, family and pets who manage to keep me happily grounded.
Kay Worthington The fact that I live in a place where the sound of the sea accompanies me on my walk into work; where I can live free of the shackles of oppression and where I feel safe, warm and comfortable surrounded by my family. That is my raison d’etre and ultimately is my lust for life.
Caroline Mauger If you mean what I lust for in life, unfortunately food features very strongly. The awful phrase ‘food porn’ was invented for people like me who get a kick out of reading Nigella’s recipes, which glorify the way her dishes will make you feel and how they will smell as they ‘languish’ in the oven. I just have to try them, and the same goes for interesting foodstuffs I encounter at the supermarket. Balsamic Pearls anyone? Books are another great lust: some are addicted to buying shoes, others can’t walk past a bookshop without browsing the latest titles and inevitably being seduced by a great blurb. When you’re in the middle of a fantastic book the world seems to be a better place, although you’re torn between the temptation to race through to the end and the desire to make it last as long as possible. Which sounds a bit like ‘lust’.

Nick Mollet My lust for life would have to be the world’s greatest sport football. I live for football, whether as a coach, supporter or spectator. It certainly stirs the emotions and sets the pulses racing. It is a great topic of conversation between mostly men but also women, especially when it comes to explaining the offside rule! I can’t understand men who hate football - they are certainly missing something important their lives! Jo Le Page I would say that my lust for life is essentially to try to enjoy every moment (not always possible!) take every opportunity to do new things, meet new people, and visit different places.

WHALE OF A TIME
Hauntingly beautiful photos of models posing with whale sharks have been taken in the Philippines in the hope to raise awareness about the poaching of the world’s biggest fish. The whale sharks are often fed by local fishermen with handfuls of shrimp which enabled them to attract the fish to the location of the photo-shoot. The extraordinary images, starring 30ft whale sharks and models Hannah Fraser and Roberta Manico took four months in the planning, with photographer Kristian Schmidt having to take the photos underwater to achieve the breath-taking photos.
At a shopping mall in Shanghai, a local landmark – the 34 ton aquarium – suddenly shattered, injuring 15 passers-by as they fled in panic. The 10 inch thick glass of the aquarium unexpectedly gave way, sending sharks skywards, fish flying and glass hurling into passers-by. Many of us have curfews and can get a little annoyed at them. However, with the help of her friend, a Californian teenager took things to the extreme, drugging her parents’ milkshakes after they banned her from surfing the net after 10pm. Though the parents only consumed a quarter of the milkshakes after finding that they had a ‘crunchy texture’ and left a ‘bad taste’ in their mouths, they promptly fell asleep after the sleeping drug, supplied by a friend, kicked in. They didn't wake up until the next morning and couldn’t remember exactly what happened but suspected something was up and so took a drug test, the police said. "Drugging your parents so you can use the internet, never heard of that," neighbour Earl Carson said, "That's crazy." The girl and her friend were both arrested and charged with conspiracy and wilfully drugging her parents.
More than a quarter of a million people have watched a video of an Irish man, Liam Keane taking a dip in the middle of the road in County Cork. ANTI DRINK DRIVE CAMPAIGN
Thursday 29th December saw the launch of the Christmas anti drink drive campaign. A volunteer from each of the media, Guernsey Police, Drug & Alcohol Strategy and someone from Lagan which sponsored the campaign, were invited to Dix Neuf where the event started at 4pm. Each volunteer asked to undertake a series of sobriety tests. They were then asked to drink alcohol at Dix Neuf, the De La Rue and finished at the White Hart where the tests were repeated to demonstrate the effects it has. The 2012 campaign focused on the “average” drinker, the one who has a drink or two and thinks it’s ok to drive because “they live just round the corner”. The event demonstrated how much alcohol impairs your judgement. The campaign teamed up with Liberation Group, who once again offered free soft drinks to designated drivers over the Christmas period.

Depending on the publisher this sandwich of verbal gristle and congealed opinions might be about table tennis or quantum theory, but whatever the subject you can bet it will be last year’s meat, whacked in the microwave and warmed up. An old fallback is to rabbit on about your hastilyadopted new year’s resolutions, broken up with trite reflections about the event highlights of the previous annus bloggabillis. This ritual was designed to cope with a godawful NYE hangover that renders the first week of January a creative write-off for most scribblers, and the high possibility that we’ve used up all of our best material trying to blag promotional freebies in December.

This year I’m going to have to break with that tradition. Not because I’ve belatedly developed any creative integrity, but because I thoroughly convinced myself that 2013 would usher in a hideous end-cycle of war, plagues and planet-shaking natural disasters, and so spent the latter end of 2012 reinforcing a survival bunker and stocking up on tinned foods. I’m therefore running a little short of opinion pieces about the Olympics, Gangnam Style and the Diamond Jubilee, but am positively overflowing with advice about storing shotgun ammo and constructing home-made booby traps.

Some readers will be lucky enough to enter the new year with the time and resources to do something really spectacular with their homes. Extensions, stables, swimming pools; there’s a lot you can do if you’ve got funds and planning permission, but just because you’re pinching pennies after a
hearty Christmas it doesn’t mean you can’t use a bit of imagination and some elbow grease to give your home a little sparkle. We’ve all got a bit of space about the place we’re not using very well, whether it be a few shelves in the lounge, a garage full of boxes or a corner of the garden that’s turned into the amazon jungle. It’s a fab new year’s project to spritz up that space, so here’s a few suggestions to get you started: * Box up everything in your shed and garage, and spend a day working out when it last got used. If it’s longer than a year, get rid of it. You’ll wonder where all that space came from!

LUSTY, BUSTY AND BROAD IN THE BEAM LET’S FACE IT GIRLS, 9 OUT OF 10 REAL WOMEN CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT CAKE. THE OTHER ONE WAS LYING.
S
o I can only wonder at the “real” men who prefer the affections of strangely angular and androgynous women with few curves and precious little sense of humour, (or so it seems to me at least) to the cuddles of a well-built, grown up woman with an extra bouncy chest and a squishy tum. Or perhaps it is just that I also possess those particular qualities, and having never been stick-thin, cannot comment on love with a bony person! Which leads us nicely into this month’s specialist subject lust? It is said that when man looks upon a woman with a lustful eye, he is committing adultery in his mind. This was in the Bible apparently. Blimey. What about women and their lustful daydreams perchance?. Are they all committing adultery albeit by mysterious ways? (I mean to say, why would they even dream when their very own missing link, sorry, beloved husband/partner/boyfriend is at home, having just returned from a smashing game of Euchre with “the boys”, and demanding an overfull kebab and another beer?). For some women it is OK to cast their lustful eyes over men in uniform. No, not around the Scout Hut, that’s simply not on. No, I mean proper men with proper jobs all those helmets, hoses and big welly boots for example. Although I have never noticed a group of women hanging around outside the Arsenal Fire station checking out the boys and hoping that a blaze will occur have you? The police don’t seem to have the same following do they? Or do they? Perhaps they do or perhaps it is just that, like the old adage, the police of today seem to be getting younger and younger (as I myself get older and older)… Maybe the ladies enjoy the idea of an armoured vehicle rattling around the lanes of Torteval rather than the young PC behind the wheel. Then there are some ladies who get all swoony over army/navy/airforce types. You have to feel sorry on Liberation Day when the “Meet and Greet the Brylcream Boys Get Together” on Crown Pier is overrun with women of a certain age, asking jokingly (or not, who knows) how they can sign up and can they be taken on their own private tour… I suspect these poor heroes have had easier tours of duty in Afghanistan, than

brave the brigades of heavily made up, middle aged women with a penchant for scratchy baize material wanting our gallant lads to take them up for a special flying lesson! Sadly though some uniform-wearing men never get a lustful look from our Guernsey sisterhood however, and this is a sad indictment on our “celebrity” enhanced society. Members of the Salvation Army (although they do do marvellous work and I am only taking the mick). Jurats, striding through town once a year, sashaying down Smith Street, hoping upon hope that they don’t slip on their purple regalia (careful now…). The Guernsey Morris Men. Enough said. Or the Supervisors on the buses, with their clip boards and peaked hats. Nope, does nothing for me either. One can only imagine the situation if a woman’s lustful daydreams about men became reality. What would occur? Possibly nothing, but I am not sure. Personally, I prefer to keep my daydreams to just that – reality could be too much of a let-down. How many handsome men who have women drooling after them all the time, and think they are the bees knees are actually completely dull, boring and have the personality of a lettuce leaf? Can they make you laugh or look after you if you are ill? Are they proficient in the chocolate buying department, and are they man enough to enter Boots and purchase some Tampax for you? If the answer is “no” then, are you with the right person? Or are you lusting after someone who is Adonis on the outside but Stone de Croze on the inside? One thing is sure, when one is tired of lusting after something, whether it is men, uniforms, cake and/or food in general, women, knowledge or power, then one is tired of life. This is when the spark is finally extinguished and all life seeps away. I have nursed men who still had a twinkle in their eyes shortly before they left behind their earthly shell, and it was charming to see, the spark didn’t fade, even at the end. If you are like me then, busty, and rather broad in the beam fear not it is said that most men like something to hold onto, as opposed to having bones digging into their flesh. Lust on fellow Guernsey women for whatever takes your fancy this Valentine’s Day. And may all your men be grateful.

ANNEKA Breed: Human Age: 26 Likes: Rugby, Surfing - anything outdoors and pole dancing. Dislikes: Bryn when he persistently tries to hump my feet. If you were an animal what would you be?: I would be a Sea Turtle because they are mellow and in Hawaiian symbolise happiness. I have one tattooed on my back. Most like to do in life?: I would like to be Ray Mears and live in the wilderness. Interesting fact: I have had a few rabbits who have had unusual friends. I used to have another Dutch Blue called Pebble who was in love with my pet Bantam Speckle Chicken... seriously, they adored each other and spent every waking minute together.
BRYN Breed: Dutch Blue Age: Unknown Likes: His sheep evidently! He loves our bedroom, and likes to sit on my fiancées pillow because he knows he is not supposed to. Using our house as a racetrack. If you were a human what would you be?: A very active one. Probably one that would get in trouble a lot and be a bit risqué I would imagine! Bryn's hobbies: Sleeping, eating, nibbling the sheep doorstop. Exploring behind the sofa, although he does frequently get stuck. Interesting fact: Bryn was found up at Pleinmont in a garden and had no home, so he came to live with us. He was obviously domesticated as he was happy to be picked up and cuddled. He was originally called Kevin but was renamed by my fiancées welsh army friend and the name stuck.

PURPLE PINKIE DAY ROTARY’S CAMPAIGN TO RID THE WORLD OF THE LIFE THREATENING AND CRIPPLING POLIO VIRUS JUST 40 PENCE SAVES A LIFE The two Rotary Clubs in Guernsey continue to help raise awareness and funds to support the worldwide campaign by Rotary International to eradicate polio worldwide. Your assistance again in promoting the Purple Pinkie Day in Guernsey would be much appreciated. 2012 saw the World Health Assembly declare the completion of poliovirus eradication a programmatic emergency for global public health. The Global Polio Emergency Action Plan was launched in support of national emergency action plans against poliomyelitis from the three remaining countries in which the disease is endemic, namely: Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Rotary International started this global campaign in 1985 and continues to be a spearhead partner in the fight against polio, a life threatening and disabling virus that can literally strike overnight and which mainly affects children under 5yrs. When we started over 1,000 children daily were affected in over 125 countries. We are still waiting for final figures to come in for 2012 but we are hoping that the number of cases of Polio will be less than 300 for the entire year and polio is now endemic in just 3 countries. 2012 has also been a difficult year, particularly in Pakistan where there have been killings of people involved in the polio vaccine programme. Rotary and its partners are determined that this will not stop the eradication of polio in this country because as long as polio exists anywhere in the world it is still a threat to us all. Polio is literally just a plane ride away.

GOAL50 PRESS RELEASE SATURDAY CAFÉ Goal50 was boosted by £500 as a result of a Saturday Café held at Zion Christian Fellowship in St Saviours. Amongst other things, home made crafts, jewellery and cakes were sold and people enjoyed coffee and cakes. A children’s corner provided activities and face painting. Organiser, Sue Seabrook said, ‘We wanted to help the people in the Cape Flats area of Cape Town who live in very difficult circumstances.’ Goal50 is raising funds to build an orphanage at the Great Commission United soccer academy in Heideveld. Goal50 founder, Nigel Pascoe, commented, ‘I am very grateful for every initiative being made and the Saturday Café has further helped our funding.’ Mr Pascoe is due to visit Cape Town again in January.

The GFA affiliation allows the GDFC to compete and travel as a FA club and compete with other FA clubs and enter FA tournaments for disabled footballers. GDFC has played against the likes of Everton, Arsenal and Southampton. The club trains once a week at the old St Sampson’s School (now College of FE) on Mondays from 6 – 7:30pm. The club are always looking for news players from age 12. Head coach Marc Le Page said: “ “We’ve wanted to get a kit to use when we compete as the GDFC team for a while and when we told Fusion what we needed, and how a new kit would benefit the team, they offered their support. “The new kit seems to have brought a new lease of life and pride out in our athletes. “Our A team won their competition in Jersey with our B team finishing second. The Northern Ireland trip saw a role reversal with our B team winning their competition and our A team finishing second. Since having our new kit the teams have won a total of thirteen games, drawn five and lost only twice scoring 48 goals in the process. “As a team we would like to thank the Fusion Nightclub and Luna Bar staff and Adam for their generosity and we look forward to the on-going charity partnership,” he said.

A VOLUNTARY ORGANISATION THAT HAS BEEN SERVING THE BAILIWICK FOR MORE THAN 60 YEARS HAS RECEIVED A DONATION FROM THE LLOYDS TSB FOUNDATION FOR THE CHANNEL ISLANDS The Guernsey Voluntary Services (GVS) - formerly the WRVS or Women’s Royal Voluntary Service - relies on over 500 volunteers to deliver such essential services as Meals on Wheels, the Island Emergency Team and assisting with the Blood Donor Service. Although it receives an annual grant from the States of Guernsey, the GVS has to meet its own running expenses from modest charges for services and fundraising initiatives. Notwithstanding the merits of such important work for the community, the donation of £11,215 will be put towards the day-to-day running costs of the Jubilee Day Centre. The GVS Manager, Clare Burton, said they were very grateful to the foundation as the Jubilee Day Centre was pivotal in the charity’s work with the older members of the community. ‘It is a delicate balance between keeping our charges to our clients as low as we can, whilst still providing a nice day out for them, so continuing support towards our running costs from the Lloyds TSB Foundation helps us do that,’ she said. In addition to the Jubilee Day Centre, the GVS runs a second day centre, The Russels, in St Peter Port. Both operate to provide a comfortable meeting place for the older members of the community, where they can take pleasure in the company of others, enjoy good food and benefit from the facilities that the centres have to offer. The Lloyds TSB Foundation for the Channel Islands has donated in excess of £10 million to charities in the Channel Islands, the UK and overseas since it’s inception in 1985. It is a grant-making trust that decides on and makes donations to charities in both bailiwicks. Its mission is to support and work in partnership with charitable organisations which help people, especially those who are disadvantaged or disabled, to play a fuller role in communities throughout the Channel Islands. The Foundations are legally independent of the Lloyds TSB Group and independent boards of trustees determine their policies. The Chairman of the local foundation is Jurat Stephen Jones and the Executive Director is John Hutchins. Mr Hutchins said: ‘We are delighted to have been able to assist the GVS during 2012 and also in previous years. It is a very well run charity and critical to Guernsey.

SAFFERY CHAMPNESS HOSTS CHARITY “50 SHADES OF EARL GREY” PAMPERING TEA PARTY TAKING ITS CUE FROM THE INDULGENCE IN THE BOOK THAT HAS TAKEN THE WORLD BY STORM, SAFFERY CHAMPNESS STAFF HAVE ORGANISED A “50 SHADES OF EARL GREY” PAMPERING TEA PARTY TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CLIC SARGENT. Saffery Champness partners the local branch of CLIC Sargent to help with its fundraising as well as trying to raise the profile and awareness of the charity and the support it can offer local families. “50 Shades of Earl Grey” promises to be one of its biggest fund-raising events of the year for the charity. The event is run in association with CLIC’s “Great Mums Get Together”, a national initiative which gives women the chance to get together for a cup of tea, some cake and ultimately to raise money for children and young people with cancer, and their families. “Our Guernsey ‘50 Shades of Earl Grey’ fund raising event is open to everyone though, not just mums,” said Lisa Vizia, a director of Saffery Champness.

We have also been overwhelmed by the tremendous amount of support we have received from other businesses and individuals who have given up their valuable spare time to help raise as much money as possible for this extremely worthy cause,” said Ms Vizia. The tickets cost £20 and will entitle each person to afternoon tea with a glass of bubbly – the total of the ticket sales and raffle will be donated to CLIC. The charity will also receive a proportion of all sales from the stalls in the Area of Indulgence. “We are underwriting all the event costs so that every penny raised can go to CLIC,” said Ms Vizia. Belinda Netherton, CLIC Sargent Guernsey Chair said: “We have held an annual tea party for some time now but never before has it been at such a grand scale. This is thanks to the wonderful team at Saffery Champness who have gone to great efforts to make this afternoon not only one of indulgence but one which will hopefully raise a significant amount of money for our charity. I have been overwhelmed by Saffery staff’s energy and enthusiasm. We are delighted that our Chair of Trustees will be attending.”

The course, which supports people with a brain injury, has already proved successful. ‘It’s been extremely effective and those users who have been through the course have reported back to us on the positive impact it has had on their lives,’ said Orla-Marie Manning from Headway Guernsey. The course enables participants to understand more about brain injury and then focuses on memory groups and confidence. ‘We deal with a wide range of brain injuries including aneurysms, meningitis, stroke and accidents. Each person will be affected differently, depending on who they are and the injury and so we look at their needs and then identify which modules will be of greatest benefit,’ said Mrs Manning. ‘A brain injury affects every area of a person’s being, their family environment, work environment and social life and so our aim is help our users accept the modified version of themselves and learn to live their lives to the full.’ Headway Guernsey receives no financial support from the States of Guernsey and each year needs to find sufficient funds to cover wages, rent and course material. ‘We rely so much on the generosity of other people to fund the work we do. It’s important that people who support us understand how vital that support is and so we’re delighted that members of the Sure Community Foundation have taken the time to join one of our group sessions,’ said Mrs Manning. ‘Without the generous financial support of companies, organisations and individuals, we simply wouldn’t be able to offer the services we do.’ Karen Jagger from the Sure Community Foundation said it was privilege to be invited to see the work being undertaken by Headway. ‘It’s very easy to write a cheque but one of the core aims of the Sure Community Foundation is to support charities and organisations which really make a difference and so we are taking the time to understand the work they are doing and the impact it has,’ she said. ‘It was fascinating for us to spend time with the group at Headway, learn more about the problems they encounter on a daily basis and how this course is helping them.’ Mrs Jagger added that the Sure Community Foundation has also recently organised for nine hampers containing food donated by staff to be distributed by Wigwam to families it supports and donated money to Every Child Our Future to purchase packs for primary schools aimed at improving child literacy. ‘We are always very keen to hear from charities and organisations who require financial or physical support. Sure employs more than 200 people in the island and so as well we having funds to donate, we also have staff who are willing to help charities and organisations,’ said Mrs Jagger.

Greater gender equality will also be achieved as the girls who typically spend hours collecting water will be able to attend school instead. All of the children will learn about economically and environmentally sustainable rainwater harvesting, water filtration, sanitation and agricultural practices while at school.
Uaso Nyiro Primary School in the Laikipia East district of Kenya, was jointly funded by the Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission and the Zeitz Foundation, with Guernsey-based charity, the Ellen Jane Rihoy Trust, facilitating the project and acting as financial administrator. Liz Rihoy, who works for Zeitz Foundation and her brother Gavin, managing director of Rihoy & Son, together with their brother Jeremy and mother Jane, set up the Ellen Jane Rihoy Trust in memory of their father John. Dr Rihoy and Gavin attended the opening ceremony on behalf of the organisations involved and the people of Guernsey. ‘We have been sent regular updates on the progress of the school but it was fantastic to see it finished and to meet some of the teachers and students and learn just how much this one building will change the lives of so many people,’ said Mr Rihoy. ‘It was an honour and a privilege for me to be there on behalf of the Ellen Jane Rihoy Trust and the people of Guernsey. The extraordinary levels of gratitude sent from the community was more than I could have imagined.’ The school, which will educate 700 children, includes four classrooms, teachers’ rooms, vegetable gardens, a courtyard theatre, workshop and community space, which will be used for health projects and other local initiatives that strengthen the school and local community. The school, which is an area with just 600mm of rainfall a year, has also been designed to ease water shortages by using an innovative system to collect, store and filter rainwater. The unique Waterbank design by American non-profit company PITCHAfrica will see the school’s 600sq.m. roof catchment area collecting more than 350,000 litres of water each year.
‘As the school is the first of its kind, comprehensive monitoring and evaluation will be essential, not only to identify ways in which this school can improve but also as a blueprint for future schools based on a similar design of combining education with a way of easing water shortages,’ said Dr Rihoy. ‘The Ellen Jane Rihoy Trust has agreed to cover the cost of a monitoring and evaluation programme and so the links between the Usao Nyiro Primary School and Guernsey will continue even though the building has been completed.’ Mike O’Hara, chairman of the Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission said it had worked with the Ellen Jane Rihoy Trust previously. ‘The Ellen Jane Rihoy Trust has facilitated some life-changing projects and always acts in a highly professional manner. Guernsey Overseas Aid Commission has been delighted to work with them on projects in South Africa, Kenya and Malawi and we are currently considering a further application from them for Endana Secondary School in Kenya,’ said Deputy O’Hara. The Zeitz Foundation is encouraging islanders to provide an educational bursary for students in their last year of education at Usao Nyiro Primary School to enable them to go on to secondary education. The recipients, who are chosen by a panel, are offered a place in a boarding school to enable them to maximise the time they have to study. The cost of a bursary is US$515 a year and sponsors will be sent regular updates and letters from the student.

This month’s director of the month was quite a challenge as any director or filmmaker who is consistently associated with “Lust” can more often than not be primarily found in the Adult section. With this in mind I went for something a bit different and instead chose Wally Pfister, a cinematographer. Cinematographers aren’t usually the most famous of film personnel, but his partnership with director Christopher Nolan means you will have definitely seen his films, The Dark Knight trilogy, ‘Inception’ and ‘Moneyball’ to name a few. The reason I have chosen Pfister is that before he became the most sought after cinematographer in Hollywood, he learnt his trade lighting and shooting erotic drama in the 1990s. Before The Dark Knight Trilogy, there was the Inside Out Trilogy, a PlayBoy production. Twenty years before picking up his Oscar for ‘Inception’, Pfister was filming ‘Lower Level’ and ‘Secret Games’. All very suggestive titles with (from what I read) equally suggestive material. I think the fact that Pfister has used the technical skills that he picked up in the industry to become an industry giant is worthy of a mention in itself. Direct-to-DVD bargain basement to Hollywood blockbusters grossing over $2 billion worldwide, not bad right?

An adaption of the classic horror story originally written by Bram Stoker in 1895 might not be the first film to come to mind when envisioning ‘lust’, but in many ways love and seduction is a vital element in the Dracula myth. Dracula becomes a vampire after he curses himself when he loses his wife, the drive of the story is that he seeks to be reunited with her, believing the wife (Ryder) of Jonathan Harker (Reeves) to be the reincarnation of her. His portrayal as a macabre –romantic elaborates this concept, his murder scenes look better suited to romance than death. Dracula conveys a more traditional theme of vampyric and supernatural lust and love than many modern day counter parts.

This is director Robert Zemeckis first live action film since 2000, when ‘Cast Away’ and ‘What Lies Beneath’ were both released. In the interim Zemeckis concentrated on motion capture animation, making films such as Beowulf and The Polar Express. His return has been met with some critical praise being nominated for two Oscars including Best Actor for Denzel Washington.

After a six year break, the fifth instalment of the Die Hard franchise sees Bruce Willis returning as John McClane. McClane travels to Russia to help out his seemingly wayward son, Jack, only to discover that Jack is a CIA operative working to prevent a nuclearweapons heist by terrorists, causing father and son to team up against the Russian criminal underworld. Director John Moore has a relatively checkered career so far, having helmed flops such as the video game adaptation Max Payne and the 2006 remake of The Omen. Die hard fans of the Die Hard franchise are hoping he can turn his fortunes around.

BOOK CORNER words | Caroline Mauger 2012 was all about erotic fiction – namely Fifty Shades of Grey and its two sequels by E.L James. Its success has led to the publication of a host of parodies as well as jumping-on-the-bandwagon novels such as Eighty Days Yellow. The thing is, I found Fifty Shades more laughable than sexy and found myself immune to Christian Grey’s so-called charms. I challenged the Committee to tell me what books got their pulses racing. Many of these are written or set in the past, when people in love necessarily had to wait before being able to give in to their lustful impulses. It’s all about the slow burn!
Precious Bane by Mary Webb A classic of historical literature by comparatively unknown author Mary Webb, set in rural Shropshire in the 19th century. Prudence is a wild, passionate girl who is born with a hare lip (her ‘precious bane’) and cursed for it by the superstitious people amongst whom she lives. The story follows a brother lusting for wealth and status and his sister Prue’s own love for a local man, with twists and turns showing the destructive consumption of lust. A heart-rending love story, endorsed by the then Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin (1928) who was moved to write an introduction to the book. (Rebecca Booth, Sponsorship)
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer If you haven’t heard of this one you must have been living on another planet - it spawned the hugely successful film franchise of the same name, fans of which have been dubbed Twihards. Perhaps I’m old enough to know better but I loved the whole saga. Twilight is undoubtedly my favourite book of the four: when it comes to stories of love and lust, to travel is better than to arrive. You can keep Christian Grey and his inability to retain his trousers when Anastasia bites her bottom lip; a love story is always better with plenty of obstacles along the way and losing control could have dire consequences for Bella, what with Edward being a vampire. On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan More of a novella than a novel, this is the story of the wedding night of two twentysomethings, Edward and Florence. Set before the sexual revolution really got going later in the 60s, both newlyweds are inexperienced and unsure, both of themselves and of what to expect from each other. McEwan masterfully conveys the tension between the characters as he describes the scene that unfolds in the honeymoon suite of a hotel on the Dorset coast. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. Compared to the work of Miyazaki, this Irish fable manages to mix humour and adventure to great effect and is guaranteed to enchant children while also offering something fresh and dynamic for adults to enjoy.

Charlotte Barnes ARTIST PROFILE
Tell us a bit about yourself, your work and how you ended up making the transition from Manchester to Guernsey? I have a Degree in Editorial Photography and an MA in Media Arts. While studying for my MA I started to explore the world of Community Arts. I then worked as a Community Artist, Project Manager for 8 years in Greater Manchester. I engaged with many communities and worked for a variety of organisations. This has given me such valuable experience but I was ready for a change and wanted to work within a new community. Have you always worked in a community based job? Most of my career has been working with communities, but I did work at a Design Agency for two years, creating artwork for print. Were you creative as a child or is this something that has grown from working within the arts industry? I have always been creative. As a child I would gather my friends together to make up short plays and then perform them to family and friends. The big motivation for me, to build a career in the arts, was when I was given my first SLR camera. I instantly couldn’t put the camera down and I spent many a happy hour in the university library looking through photography books. How does the local community differ from your previous positions? I haven’t been on the Island long enough to get to know the community yet. One early impression is that the field of community arts is very different here, it is less established. What is your drive, what keeps it interesting for you? I am very passionate about using the Arts to support social change. A key element of working in the field of Community Arts is problem solving,

for example: How can we change social perception through using the arts? How do we engage specific communities through the arts? I have worked with many different communities and sometimes, through the arts, you are given a very unique insight into their lives. What is your preferred medium for your own work and where does your inspiration come from? My preferred medium is photography but recently I have started painting with acrylics. The Artist Richard Billingham has been a big inspiration for me. His piece of work ‘Ray’s a Laugh’ was the trigger for me to explore the relationship between the photographer and their subject. I was fascinated by the fact he chose to photographically document his life with his alcoholic father and chaotic family and exhibit those images. I naturally questioned if I could document and exhibit such personal moments of my life. This led me to start developing and delivering projects using photography to explore people’s lives. I am not interested in being the person photographing another person’s life, I prefer to equip and support the individual to photographically document their own lives. I hear your Grandfather designed the nose for the Concord, has he been an inspiration to you? Did he take you under his wing? Sorry. My Granddad was involved in the design of Concorde nose and the interior. I am immensely proud of his achievement and he is a great inspiration. He started working for British Aerospace straight from school, worked his way up the organisation and was at Director level when he retired. I have very special memories of my Granddad taking me to Heathrow Airport to watch Corcorde, he was very proud of the plane.
Where do you see your self in the future, do you think that Guernsey will become your home or do you have the desire to move onto new challenges? I have a five year contract as the Community Arts Development Manager for Guernsey Arts Commission. I now see Guernsey as my home, after the five years…we will have to wait and see!
‘TONY & GEORGE’ Photographs This piece of work was created in 2003 leading up to the decision to go war in Iraq. I engaged with the general public on the streets of Leeds and Manchester asking them to put on the mask of Tony Blair and George Bush. The work explores the potential impact the decision to go to war could have on everyone’s lives. I continued this piece of work when the war actually started but I had a very different response from the general public. People were more suspicious of the project and they didn’t want to be photographed with the masks on.

CYCLING AROUND THE WORLD
Pete and Mary are cycling around the world. Last time we caught up with them they were in Istanbul. Now they’ve got as far as Vietnam and had some time to answer a few questions about their epic ride. Tell us about your projects in Istanbul Our time in Istanbul was amazing. We spent four months living amongst artists, filmmakers, musicians, chefs etc. in the hectic neighbour hood of Cihangir. Having made contact with Studio 9, a gallery in a chic area of Istanbul, we were invited to take part in an exhibition. We took inspiration from the contrasts of the city; a tourist destination with beautiful ornate religious buildings but also home to the very different kind of beauty of ruinous buildings and more shambolic areas. We included references from patterns and Islamic architecture, the maze of streets and steps, the food and the culture. The exhibition consisted of three large scale drawings, drawing machines (Mary), and two platforms of landscapes created using a local commodity, the potato.(Pete). marythompson.co.uk and www.peterroot.com. Is there a community of other cyclists travelling too? We’ve met loads of other people; cyclists, motor-cyclists, people in 4WD trucks etc… and a few we have met time and time again. Our first experience was a with a Swiss couple who were headed for the Turkmenistan border at the same time as us and we decided to ride together through ‘the Turkmen Dash’. It was fun, so much so that we continued our riding with Tobias and Marianne on and off for two months. When escaping our scary experience in Khorog we left as a group of ten cyclists as it’s bottleneck on the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan where you’re guaranteed to meet other travellers. Some of the people we travelled with from Khorog we’d met as far back as Turkey and Iran. How do you deal with injuries on the road? Apart from a few bumps and scratches, occasionally spending more time on the loo than we’d like and me having to clean my undies more often than is ideal, we’ve been lucky to not get sick or injured. Maybe I should have been a nurse, a couple of days ago I syringed my ears, successfully! How have your bodies changed after over a year of cycling? Mary looks more athletic and beautiful than ever before. I’ve grown about a foot taller and now have muscles on my toes.
You’ve probably encountered some scary situations? In July we got stuck in Khorog, in the Pamir mountains. We were woken by the sound of machineguns and, with twenty other guests, were trapped in the hotel for forty eight hours whilst hundreds of military troops engaged in gunfire with armed ‘rebels’. We couldn’t contact the British embassy because the government had shut down all media and communications. When we finally made our escape we cycled through a battlefield of burnt-out cars and blood stains on the road; a harrowing experience. More recently we were following the Yangtze when the road just disappeared into the river. Turns out, sections of it had been flooded due to the construction of the enormous Three Gorges dam. We managed to take a detour road but terrifyingly this was being peppered with landslides and falling rocks due to highway construction above. They were using ‘controlled’ explosions to blast away the rock which was, in turn, raining down on us. Although the road took us through breathtaking scenery it was one of the most terrifying experiences of our lives. We always avoid cycling at night, but on this occasion were left with no choice and had to make an eighteeen-hour dash for it.

Survival skills and essential rituals? When we started camping at times we’d be so knackered we’d not bother cooking and just collapse after eating junk food from a petrol station.
We always thought we could trust each other with our lives, now we know we can. We’ve learnt that it’s important to make time for rituals like cooking food. Having found a spot Mary will convert the tent into home, whilst I boil water for coffee (that mini cafetiere we picked up in Istanbul is great!). If we’re camping somewhere cold then we boil a bit extra so we can have warm water to wash. Clean and relaxed, we stick on some music or a podcast and make some grub. Dinner is something like noodles, eggs and vegetables bought in a village that day. How do you see yourself looking back to the start of your trip?
An impossibly reductive summary of a life-changing trip We’d never class ourselves as shy but we’ve grown in confidence, both independently and with each other. We always thought we could trust each other with our lives, now we know we can. We focus more on the basics of life: good sleep, good food and other people. A smile and a wave from a stranger can make you feel fantastic all day long, a good dinner in your tent can be better than a night in an extravagant hotel. When you strip it down to the simple things in life we don’t feel like we are missing much. Still planning to cycle around the world? Absolutely! There’s still so much to see and this type of traveling is so rewarding. But we might settle in New Zealand for a while to replenish cash, do art projects and meet up with family again! “No matter that a two hour treatment set my back 350 Euros, this chocolate massage impressed my ladyfriend no end. Since we got back to Jersey, we’ve been recreating the experience all the time, using melted Mint Aeros, Twixes and Stork, but it’s nowhere near as good as the real thing.”
Luckily, for those looking to enjoy a citybreak but a soggy hop over the Channel Jet2 offer direct flights from Jersey to destinations including Belfast and Leeds Bradford. You won’t have to turn up at the airport three days early and push to the front of the queue to get half decent seats as you would with a certain predominantly orange low-cost airline but will still benefit from their ‘friendly low fares’ and 22kg baggage allowance. With the Yorkshire Dales on its doorstep, Leeds Bradford has much more to offer than just the vibrant city life of Leeds with its art galleries, theatres, boutiques and nightclubs but also the vast outside life that Yorkshire has to offer. If you’re into Medieval history be sure to pass by York to admire the York Minster and York Castle. If they’ve been good enough for Kings of ages gone by, they’re certainly good enough for you, Duck. If slightly more modern history is more your thing, then why not try Belfast instead? Streets lined with Edwardian architecture and 18th century saloons pale into insignificance in stark contrast to ‘The Titanic Belfast’, a futuristic structure built on the very site where the Titaic was built. Much like the Titanic, its vast, bold elevations project into the sky like the bow of a boat faced entirely in reflective glass panels, which I should think would work a treat at melting any surrounding ice. Or your face, so don’t forget your sunglasses, a hat and some factor 40. Of course, there’s plenty of picturesque countryside to roam outside of the city itself too, so choose wisely. T
he world of celebrity spins faster every day, and the only way to stay onboard and avoid being shot off into planet D-list is to stay on trend and outdo your competition. The essential celeb accessory was tattoos one minute, novelty-named babies the next, but both of those are kind of permanent, and permanent is so not cool right now. Instead, there’s a trend with staying-power that still manages to stay fresh and new every day. Sniff it up; I’m talking about celebrity fragrance. At some point, we’ve all wanted to smell a bit like Britney Spears. I don’t mean literally like Britney Spears, who I am reliably informed smells like Doritos and rehab, but like the fantasy Britney Spears dancing forever in our MTV dreams. This hidden desire is why Ms Spears now makes far more money from her range of perfume than from squeezing her bronzed buttocks into a stolen school uniform. J Lo has several smells, Gwen Stefani has several more, and even Lady Gaga’s jumped on the bandwagon and released her own scent, which has a whiff of Kermit with an undercurrent of meat dress and second-hand Madonna records.

The celeb fragrance was born with Elizabeth Taylor’s White Diamonds, which was as essential to the fashionable eighties lady as shoulder pads, Peruvian snowflake and a muscled pool boy named Paco. Erupting from its bottle like a blast of screeching dubstep, the debut scent from the nation’s favourite daytime radio bimbo evokes both ferns and cotton, with powerful base notes of champagne and the drain that your licence fee is being poured down. It’s young, it’s funky, Hashtag Amazesmell! is guaranteed to irritate the senses of anybody with an IQ over room temperature. Strangely enough, BBC marketing went first with this one instead of scents formulated to smell like Chris Moyles (chips, both edible and on shoulders), Tim Westwood (old man bling; Deep Heat; white bread) or Thought For The Day (flannels; mortality).
Airports, chemists and branches of Toys R Us are expecting to do big business on the debut spray from anthropomorphic TV rodent Rastamouse. Many beauty brands are created by marketers and men in lab coats, but for every faceless brand on sale you’ll also find a range created with love by someone on the beauty front-line. Hairdressers who really do understand the trials of bad hair days, beauty therapists who calm flare-ups and smooth away wrinkles and nail techs who polish the talons of top models during London Fashion Week. Much of that talent is now available, bottled-up and on sale. Gallery talked to some of our modern beauty icons and got the low-down on their favourite beauty creations.

A KICK ABOUT WITH MESSI, KARAOKE WITH TOM JONES OR MAYBE EVEN BREAKFAST IN BED WITH MARCO PIERRE WHITE IS YOUR CUP OF TEA AND TOAST. I HAVE A LUST FOR GOOD SMELLS, SO I WENT TO THE UK TO SAMPLE THE MOST EXPENSIVE PERFUME IN THE WORLD. The window of Clive Christian’s flagship store gives a glimpse into the lives of the serially chic. His flair for quality and aesthetics has earned him cult status in the world of home interiors. Whilst renovating his Nantwich premises, Clive (OBE) uncovered an old perfume bottle that dated back to the Crown Perfumery. Years later, in 2000 he bought the brand and the original London shop. Perfume aficionados will appreciate the prominence of this heritage; it began life in 1840 as a bespoke corset business for ladies to “whom nature had not endowed with ample fullness”. To soothe fainting bouts brought on by the restrictive nature of the under-garments, the owner concocted lavender based smelling salts which evolved over the years into fine perfumes. His faithful clients included none other than Queen Victoria. Since the acquisition Clive has continued the quest for luxury fragrance and, with the help of revered alchemist Roja Dove, created his own bespoke collection.
‘1872’ was inspired by Victoria
and Albert and respects the original formulae. The woman’s version contains lavender, patchouli and rose de Mai which can only be harvested for three weeks of the year in the south of France (climate change permitting). You need 170 flower heads to produce one drop and is six times more expensive than gold. You can feel the density of the flowers; it’s opulent and blooming yet clean, like a Piña Bausch stage-set. The male version has the same drama yet the cedar and herbs give it a mossy masculine kick. Emperor Nero used the same clary sage to energise his soldiers.

‘X’ was inspired by Cleopatra,
with whom Marc Anthony fell in love ‘at first sniff’; she had doused her ships sails with Egyptian jasmine - the aphrodisiac that can only be collected at dusk from the banks of the Nile. It swirls honey and vanilla into a deliciously smooth veil. Goldie Hawn wears it and it is apparently prescribed to newly single women. The male alternative is dark using oris; (which takes seven years to dry out). Historically burnt in large bowls to signify the arrival of the King; it’s is a truly commanding peppery aroma with a schizophrenic heat about it and an irresistible undercurrent of cough mixture.

The Clive Christian haute couture perfume experience did not disappoint; the fragrances are of the finest quality drawing together the most precious ingredients from all over the world in distinctive formulae to create scents that are quintessentially English but never antiquated. The travel set, which consists of a 10ml bottle each of
In December I went to Selfridges, for a personal introduction to the scents. Amanda Lindsay’s passion shone as she detailed the history surrounding the brand. “We should invest in perfume like we do with good winter boots” she insisted. The elite collections of pure perfumes are presented in neat wooden cases, draped in a silk scarf (used to dab and wipe clean the bottle to avoid contamination with skin molecules). The elixir is decanted into a handmade crystal flacon with a 24 carat gold-plated band adorned with a single white diamond around its neck. Priced at just shy of £3000, this is seriously decadent stuff. I tested the six more modestly priced definitive and private collections, each with a male and female counterpart; not gender exclusive but rather designed to complement or combine.
‘No. 1’ contains Indian
sandalwood which carries a preservation order, in fact the ingredients are so rare that the batches have subtle differences in their bouquet; there are only 500 bottles in existence. The female variant is enveloping like sinking into a hot tub. The men’s is much sharper but equally opulent. This pair was chosen in a blind test by Tom Cruise and Katy Holmes for their wedding day; let’s hope it’s not a bad omen for William and Kate who followed suit. There are also 250 bottles in existence of a ‘No. 1 Imperial Jubilee’ edition. The Queen has bottle 60.

‘C’ (Clive) contains tuberose, Oudh, pepper and is powdery, sparkling in violet bursts. The men’s is deliciously leathery and far eastern. In my testing session I found it impossible to extract a favourite as, with each new waft, I was freshly smitten. I chose ‘V’, named after Clive’s daughter and brand ambassador Victoria. The female half was reassuringly classic but somehow novel. Very clean, it fuses frankincense with carnations in a sensual haze. But it was the ‘V’ for men that I spritzed onto my scarf for keeps, with its heavy church incense combining citrus with amber wood.

No offence to my fellow brewers, but lust is about the last thing that springs to mind. I’ve been signed up on a one-day apprenticeship at the Liberation Brewery with fellow novice Jo Reed, whose day-job is marketing for Liberation Group. Both of us have been on our fair share of brewery tours before, but have never previously rolled our sleeves up and donned our wellies. Jo’s sizefive boots are rejected because they still have Jersey Live mud on them, so she gets a replacement pair of size-nines, and we’re good to go. Ready, steady, brew! We’re not helping brewer Pat Dean with any old ale, but a batch of Liberation Rouge that is to be submitted for the biennial Brewing Industry International Awards. Liberation won two gold and a silver last time around, in 2011, and hopes are high for further success. No pressure then… Many breweries are automated these days, including the larger of Liberation’s two

plants, but Pat’s ‘office’ is a more bijou affair, and that means being hands-on, whether or not your wellies fit. We kick off by heaving half a dozen 50kilo bags of malted barley into an outsize (4-foot-high) saucepan, known as a mash tun, and adding hot water to give a big batch of porridge. After an hour or so the liquid part of the mix, known as ‘wort’, is drained off. The solids are shovelled out into dustbins by yours truly to be sold off as animal feed – their journey across the Island will be chronicled in a future issue of Gallery, although I’m washing my hair that day. The wort is transferred to a copper kettle, twice the height of the mash tun, and boiled with hops, which are the main source of flavour for beer. As with the barley, there’s a specific recipe of different amounts of various hops for each different beer. Hops can cost as much as £17 per kilo, and are sourced from around the globe, with England, New Zealand and the USA being major growers.

Further hop flavour is imparted in another vessel, known as a hop back, after which the wort is transferred into a fermenting vessel. It has been as high as 70C during the process, but now is down to about 20C, a suitable mark to pour in a couple of gallons of gloopy light-brown yeast, which will start to work on the sugars in the wort and, by turning them into alcohol and carbon dioxide, making wort into a more appetising four-letter word – beer! Once the yeast is added, which would typically be around seven or eight hours after getting started, it’s necessary to sit back and wait. Fermentation times vary, but this batch of Rouge – about 300 gallons in all – will be ready in about four days, by which time thirst levels, and perhaps even lust levels, will be at bursting point. Jo and I are thanked for our hard work by Pat, even though we are setting off without helping him finish off the clearing-up. We pledge to come back for another brew on another day, although if ‘our’ beer wins an award, we may get signed up by a Premier League brewer on a mega-bucks deal. Who knows, it might even involve a lucrative Wellington boot endorsement clause – if that’s not something to lust after, then what is?

WINE AND THE ART OF SEDUCTION
A
s you’ve probably gathered by now, the theme for the February issue is “Lust”. I could have written about a wine with this very name on the label, (it’s one of the “Seven Deadly Zins” (Zinfandel) – geddit?), but I thought it more appropriate to talk about wine to share with that someone special. Wine has played a major role in the art of seduction for thousands of years. So, what have we learned, and how can we make sure our romantic date on Valentine’s Day, or indeed any other day of the year, will be a success? Well, unless Magaluff-like shots or bucket loads of spirits Thailandstyle are your idea of a perfect seduction technique, you need to remember that quality over quantity wins every time! A well-chosen bottle of wine (or better still, Champagne) will make a special occasion memorable; getting plastered will invariably result in a disastrous night out, followed by a not-too-pleasant day after. Wine and lust, in fact, make pretty good soul mates. Many a great relationship has been sparked by a drink or two. And pubs, clubs and wine bars will always remain a popular venue for meeting a new partner. Yet, it’s still a bit of a minefield in choosing the right wine for the romantic occasion – how do you know what to bring to the table? What if you get it wrong? Are there any no-no’s? Firstly, remember that choosing wine for someone is very much like selecting a perfume or buying them a painting: There’s no right or

wrong, because it all depends on their personal preference! That’s right, what YOU enjoy might not be their taste and visa versa. Neither is wrong; it’s simply that everyone’s different. Secondly, finding a partner with some similar tastes (but not necessarily identical) is a good start. If you enjoy fine wines and vintage Champagne, for example, it will be more difficult to enjoy a romantic relationship with someone who prefers the cheapest plonk they can lay their hands upon. So, for the purposes of seduction, I think it’s important to remember that it’s all about making the event special in whichever way your partner will appreciate. The ever-popular Champagne is a great start to making an occasion feel special, but if your partner prefers something else then be prepared to let him/her know that their wishes are important to you and find them something different, no matter how quirky. For a special date, just remember that a little wine acts as an aphrodisiac but too much has the opposite effect. Things can seem great after a glass or two but after four or five it’s an entirely different story. Do some research and find out their favourite tipple. Maybe paired up with their favourite food as a surprise? If your culinary skills aren’t up to scratch, book a table at their favourite restaurant. Keep a surprise or two up your sleeve that you know they enjoy, and they’ll wear a smile on their face that lets you and the rest of the world know that your night of romance was a big success in every possible way!

allery visited the luxurious, prestigious Leopard Bar & Restaurant within the Duke of Richmond Hotel and our first words were WOW followed by another WOW. The exquisite and stately décor oozed affluence with a modern chic twist. You would expect with such an aristocratic and opulent look that the menu would be colossal in price, Gallery were surprised to discover the exact opposite! Their menu is casual offering pasta, curries, homemade burgers, and a Half Rotisserie Chicken with Salad and Chips for £12.50! Prices reflect very good value for money which is what Management want to get across. It is their intention to keep a modest priced menu and they wish for people to feel pampered and well looked after whilst receiving value for money. The balance is just perfect. This is without a doubt one of St Peter Port’s best kept secrets. It is very welcoming with an alluring yet friendly atmosphere that welcomes families with children. David was very proud to share with us that when customers dine with a child/children, within 3 minutes they have found out the child’s name and have their name printed on the child’s menu. This makes the little one feel so special and it costs nothing. We caught up with the Executive Restaurant Manager David Legoupil whose focus is on establishing the restaurant as a first choice venue. Sunday lunch offers 3 courses for just £18.50. The menu changes weekly and includes Roast Beef, Rotisserie Chicken and fish. Vegetables are offered on the table for that relaxed feel of helping yourself to make your dining experience less invasive. There is a choice of 3 desserts and the Specials board is changed daily. Summer will bring a new A La Carte Menu and BBQs on the 70 seat Terrace with jazz music and saxophones.

David, tell me a little about yourself and how you came to head up the restaurant? I moved to Guernsey 6 years ago, after spending 5 years in France. I started catering in 1983 and, after spending time in the UK, the South Pacific, the Alps and Switzerland, I worked from Miami for 7 years on a Cruise ship. I went back to France but didn’t like it. Over the years I have developed strong Sommelier skills with a good knowledge of spirits and wine and when Red Carnation Hotels approached me for the position I was delighted. What attracted you to invest your time and energy into the Duke of Richmond? Every 6-9 months I was changing cruise ships tasked with opening new restaurants. I always like the challenge of opening new places, It’s hard work but when finished there is a fantastic sense of reward. My mission is to create the vibe that in 6 months time when people dine here it will be as if it has been running for the last 10 years. What is your lust for the restaurant trade? To achieve... There is nothing better than working in a successful restaurant and being busy. My aim is to be successful and achieve an excellent reputation, good self esteem for me and my team. Overall lust is Reputation built on good wine, good staff, good food and good service. What dish on the menu are you both most proud to recommend? Half Rotisserie-Chicken our delicious signature dish. Every menu is submitted, approved and signed off by Mrs Tollman the owner, originally from South Africa. What did you do before Medical Aesthetic Skincare? I have 20 years experience working as a Dental Hygienist. Having the anatomical and physiologist knowledge and experience of the face, head and neck and 2 decades of experience administering facial injections has obviously been invaluable in allowing me to deliver an extremely high standard of hygiene, care, skill and expertise in aesthetic procedures. My client’s interests are of paramount and foremost importance. What lessons have you taken from your last job to help with your new venture? As I say with over 2 decades of experience
working with patients in a dental practice environment I am only too well aware of how important it is that the client /patient feels at ease. From the moment I meet my clients I aim to do this in a relaxed, nonintimidating atmosphere. I talk everything through and ensure clients are well informed about any of the procedures they maybe considering, and that the treatment I am giving is perfectly suited to their individual needs. It is important that my clients have complete piece of mind before, during and after treatment. What’s been the biggest difficulty? I am being 100% honest here when I say I am stumped on this one! Sitting on the Senior Management Team, Peter Zunino comes into the business with a long track record of marketing in a variety of business sectors. GUERNSEY’S FOUNDATIONS LEGISLATION NOW IN FORCE
The Guernsey foundations law came into effect today. The legislation, which was approved by the Privy Council in mid-December and registered in Guernsey’s Royal Court yesterday, is now in force and the Guernsey Registry will be accepting applications from tomorrow [9 January]. Fiona Le Poidevin, Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance, said: “It’s extremely pleasing to see that Guernsey’s foundations legislation has been approved and the law has now come into force. Commencement of the law allows our fiduciary professionals to consider the use of a foundation as well as a trust when adopting wealth structures for their clients. Foundations may be particularly attractive to those based in civil law jurisdictions in Europe and further afield in the emerging markets of China, Russia and Latin America where the foundation concept is more familiar. “We’ve been hearing from a number of industry practitioners over the past few months that there has been a great deal of interest in the Guernsey foundation. DISTINCTION FOR ETHICS STUDY AT ORCHARD PR Channel Island’s PR consultancy Orchard is celebrating staff development again as account executive Harriet Black has gained the Chartered Institute of Public Relations PR Diploma. Ms Black gained a distinction for her project which focused on ethics in public relations. She already holds a degree in public and media relations from the University of Swansea and the post graduate level diploma enabled her to take her skills and knowledge even higher.
BUTTERFIELD ANNOUNCES ISLAND GAMES BURSARY RECIPIENTS BUTTERFIELD Bank has announced the recipients of its Island Games bursaries. Luke Winberg for triathlon, Courtney Butcher for swimming, Sam Wallbridge for 400m hurdles, Zoe Fitch for javelin and Andy Bridgman and Johanna Asplund from the sailing team have all received funding to help them attend the 2013 Island Games in Bermuda. Originally two bursaries were on offer but as so many young sportsmen and sportswomen applied, Butterfield decided to increase the number of bursaries to help a team and four individuals have the opportunity of being able to participate in the games next year. Miss Butcher, who attends St Sampson’s High, will be 15 years old and undertaking her GCSEs when she attends the Island Games next year. She will compete in the 50, 100 and 200 meters freestyle and 50, 100 and 200 meters backstroke and possibly more events at the games. “I’m currently training 11 hours a week at Beau Sejour in preparation for the games. I’ve competed in UK swimming competitions and recently attended championships in Hampshire but the Island Games in Bermuda will be the biggest event I’ve competed in so far. I’m really excited to attend and the bursary award will really help with the cost of travel and accommodation,” she said. Mr Winberg, who attends Grammar School Sixth Form Centre, is currently training 15 hours a week in preparation for competing in the Triathlon. “I’m trying to balance out my training between the three sports. At the moment it’s quite swimming heavy so I’m working to find a suitable balance. I don’t train in a specific triathlon team, I run with runners and cycle with cyclists, which works well. “This is my second Island Games as I competed last time for the swimming team and I’m still waiting to hear whether I’ll be competing for swimming as well as triathlon next year. The Bermuda Games will be the furthest I’ve travelled to compete in a sporting event and the bursary will be extremely helpful, especially for the cost of taking my bike and the rest of my kit with me.” Jon Marley, Guernsey Island Games Association Games Liaison Director, said, “The Butterfield bursary will be invaluable to the six chosen recipients in helping them with the costs of attending the games next year. The Guernsey Island Games Association is taking close to 200 competitors and officials to the games next year which requires huge commitment and organisation.” John Robinson, Managing Director of Butterfield in Guernsey was pleased to offer the funding to the chosen competitors: “I’m thrilled that through the bursaries Butterfield Bank has been able to support these young sportsmen and women to attend and compete at the Island Games next year. The six recipients are so passionate about their chosen sports and their level of commitment to training is outstanding. POLITICS, CENTRAL BANKS OR THE ECONOMY? PLEASE TAKE YOUR PICK! 2012 ENDED ON A POSITIVE NOTE WITH THE US CONGRESS AGREEING ON A PLAN TO INCREASE TAXES BUT BY NOWHERE NEAR AS MUCH AS THE WORST CASE SCENARIO WHICH WOULD HAVE COME ABOUT IF NO AGREEMENT HAD BEEN REACHED AND THE US HAD HEADED OVER THE SO-CALLED “FISCAL CLIFF”.
O
ver the next couple of months, we can expect wrangling over spending cuts and the US debt ceiling to resurface but overall the political noise has been nothing but an unwelcome distraction to what has been a pretty good year for investment returns. This is because the big picture has been dominated by the Central Banks which have maintained very low interest rates and abundant levels of liquidity via differing quantitative easing programmes. For now this has trumped everything. Politics has forced its way into investors’ thinking but the reality has been that sentiment has been steadily improving all year and this has led to quite an improvement in valuations. Since the Summer, there has been a growing perception that the worst of the Eurozone problems are now behind us. A good example of this has been Greece. At the start of 2012, nobody expected Greece to remain in the Euro but that is precisely what has happened and Greek bonds have returned 79%. Mario Draghi can take a lot of credit for this but the job is not yet done. Economic activity across the Eurozone needs to pick up this year to take the pressure off the ECB and the key question remains how likely this is. Given the export dependency of the leading Eurozone economies, much will depend on the rest of the world, led by the US seeing growth return at a rate of 2.5% or better. Our feeling is that the best of the US recovery is probably behind us and that much overdue fiscal tightening will mean that US growth will struggle to exceed 2% during 2013. Now the mistake that was easy to make in 2012 was to confuse economic performance with stock market returns. For example, there has been a strong historical relationship between the performance of the German stock market and expectations regarding the German economy. In 2012 expectations of GDP growth in Germany have steadily come down and have recently fallen below 1% and yet the DAX index finished the year with a gain of nearly 30%. Clearly the DAX index has been more sensitive to monetary policy and has largely ignored the deteriorating economic picture, preferring to look through the current period of slower economic activity. So should we expect the coming year to closely resemble 2012? Looking around the world, the investment environment can hardly be described as the best in living memory but at the same time there are opportunities, provided you appreciate the risks and keep a shortish time horizon. There will be political wrangling in Washington over the size of the US fiscal deficit. There will be elections in two of Europe’s leading economies, Italy and Germany. All the time the Central Banks can be expected to keep interest rates low and liquidity in abundance. So while there will be political uncertainty, there is no particular reason to expect this to feed through into asset price instability. A feature of the last 12 months has been an environment where risks appear to have been high but volatility has been quite low. This has meant that for those who have embraced risk, the markets have been kind and the ride towards pretty good overall returns has not been particularly bumpy. In the last quarter, correlations, which have been historically very high, have at last started to fall. Basically it has not mattered so much which stocks you have been in but this has started to change. Equally it has become more important which sectors and countries you are in. Some argue that we are entering the start of a whole new phase of the bull market but we are less convinced and will monitor signs that on the contrary, the rally is nearing another short term peak.

Deutsche Bank’s Summer Internship Program looks to offer a structured, comprehensive introduction to working for a global institution. Depth, focus and support are the key to a successful internship – so candidates are given the opportunity to spend ten weeks with a particular Deutsche Bank team and all are assigned a personal mentor. The Bank looks to recruit bright, enthusiastic and ambitious people for the Program and last summer welcomed three such people, all working in different areas of the business. Today, two of last year’s interns share their experiences with us. Elliot Bourge, 20, is currently studying Economics at Edinburgh University and Emma Boden-Heaume, also 20, is in her final year of study for a BA in Advertising and Marketing at Lincoln University.
Genuine responsibility To get the most out of the experience, the scheme’s participants are encouraged to take on certain responsibilities, and manage individual tasks throughout the ten weeks. Last year’s intake had the opportunity to get involved in projects that were of real importance to Deutsche Bank. As Emma Boden-Heaume who joined Global Trust Solutions recalls, “I was responsible for a large project during my time there. This involved analysing the potential time saving practices, which I am proud to say is now likely to form the basis of a significant business proposal!”

Where possible, the internship is adapted to encourage specific skills and interests. This involves building on skills and experiences both in and out of the office. Elliot, who was placed in the Custodian Trustee Services team comments: “I certainly learnt new skills - by the end of my time there, terms such as “NAV pack checking” and “retrospective cash monitoring” were no longer foreign concepts!” Lincoln University student, Emma adds: “Client Accounting mainly requires numerical and problemsolving skills, my capacity in these areas has improved dramatically and through working with other departments, my team working ability has also developed, which will prove a valuable tool in my future pursuits.” Beyond time in the office, the interns embraced Deutsche Bank’s social responsibility programme, volunteering to serve lunch to carers at the Guernsey Alzheimer’s Association for whom they also organised a fundraising cake sale. The interns also participated in various team building and social activities including Deutsche Bank’s 5-a-side football team and the Guernsey Marathon.

THIS MONTHS SPORTING ENCOUNTER PITCHES ME AGAINST 18 YEAR-OLD MATT HUDSON FROM FENCING.
A
s well as his dedication to Fencing, Matt lists Target Rifle Shooting as his other main pastime and has represented Guernsey in international competitions in the UK. He played various other sports as a youngster but got involved with the Sarnia Fencing Club at the tender age of 10 after going along with a friend and it quickly developed into his number one sport. This is an interesting sporting challenge for me and when I think of Fencing I think of the scene in Die Another Day where James Bond duels with Gustav Graves swinging through the air and jumping tables. My motto has always been, “Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don’t”. Add that to the fact that I have nearly finished writing my book on how to become a master at fencing. I just need to add the final touchés. To be honest, I had a fencing lesson last Saturday, never try to sell a stolen television outside a police station. I know what you are saying, enough of the poor fencing jokes, just get on with it! Even though Matt is still very young he has already packed plenty into his Fencing career. In 2008 he competed in Penang, Malaysia with his team picking up the Bronze Medal in the Junior World Championships. Locally he has been the Guernsey and CI Junior Sabre Champion for two years running and has been part of the Elizabeth College team that has won the Public School Championships five years running. After thirty minutes of tuition on movement skills and the art of lunging it was time for us to settle our differences with the sword. I slipped on the safety equipment paying particular attention to ensure that my good looks were fully covered. On Guard! First to 15 points and to be honest I didn’t get anywhere near him. As much as I lunged and retreated he had a strong base to strike from and quick feet. I lost 15-0, which was the only time in the thirteen challenges I have undertaken, where I didn’t at least score a point or even compete. The next time I am invited to play James Bond I will be leaving out the Fencing scene! What great fun though and I would thoroughly recommend people to try it out. Lets talk about Matt Hudson and Fencing. What inspired you to get into the sport of Fencing? I like the fact it is not just a physical sport, there is also the mental side of things involved in outwitting your opponent. It’s like playing Chess whilst doing a 100m sprint!
My wife Jane told me that she is leaving me due to my obsession with the Olympic Games. I told her I am sure we’ll overcome this hurdle together and get our marriage back on track. How much training would an elite Fencer in the Olympics expect to do and how does that compare to your training? An elite Fencer would be doing around eight hours per day of technical training, endurance work and strength and conditioning training. We train every day, sometimes it’s half an hour and other days it can be two hours. I’ve been bored recently so I’ve decided to take up fencing. The neighbours dog escaped and they say they will call the police unless I put it back. Now you have taken up Fencing, what aspirations and goals are you focusing on? I want to be selected as part of the Great Britain U21 team by 2014 and would love to Fence in a World Championship. In my sport Cricket, to become a successful player you need to be good technically but perhaps more importantly, have control mentally when things are not going your way. How important is controlling emotions in Fencing? It’s extremely important, if you let it slip you dull your senses and don’t react as quickly. You have to control yourself and stay in the present How would someone get into Fencing in Guernsey? If you wanted to get involved then it’s pretty easy. There is a pathway scheme run by the Guernsey Fencing Academy that targets people from 8-13. The Sarnia Sword Club also runs adult courses for beginners. Is it still possible to pick up any injury through the protective clothing? It is possible but the Kevlar safety equipment is so well made these days that you don’t really feel any impact and everything is covered. I have picked up the odd bruise and occasionally been rapped on the knuckles but that’s about it. Give us the names of two talented local Fencers who we should be looking out for in the Guernsey Press and what makes them special? I would have to go for Fraser Ward who is agile, able to keep a clear head and always plans ahead. My second choice would be James Aldous-Granby. He is committed to the sport and very quick. What is the hardest thing to learn and the most difficult part of Fencing? The hardest thing to learn is the manipulation of the distance between the fighters and the most difficult part is staying focused between bouts. At a tournament you might have an hours wait before your next bout.

S
he’s done really well this year becoming the first British lady to win a WTA Tour Title for 24 year. Now she has got to where she is, she has given herself a chance to play the top players and gain a few big scalps. She’s a great athlete and fantastic competitor with very good skills. I see her improving again this coming year. If you had not been the successful tennis player that you are what career path do you think you would have taken? An Aussie rules football player. I am a big fan of the Hawks and try to watch as many of their matches as I can What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given? “Theres no right and no wrong” I’m working very hard on being non judgmental - it’s tough to be this way when you are a tennis commentator and writer, so I like to think of myself as an observational commentator as opposed to being a critic! Who do you look up to? Not sure about looking up to anyone as such as that would indicate they are higher or better than me and I don’t feel anyone can claim to be a better person than anyone else. I respect anyone who has managed to find true happiness and a balance of work rest and play. As far as skills go I’m an admirer of the guitar and there are many talented musicians out there whom I admire. What is your guilty pleasure? Chips or as you guys call them crisps - plain salted How do you celebrate after a win? My last win was in the over 45s at Wimbledon with Mark Woodforde, we had a dinner with friends with some champagne but we didn’t even finish the bottle as we were too tired after 2 weeks of Wimbledon madness! What’s your next big goal in life? To continue in self improvement. I am creating tennis centres around the world. We started in the Caribbean 18 months ago. I’m in the early stages of creating a charity providing workshops to young hopeful athletes, I believe they need some guidance and support considering how much they are being asked to do at a young age. What’s your biggest achievement? Raising 4 happy, healthy and very cool kids although this achievement goes greatly unnoticed. My Wimbledon or Davis Cup wins for Australia are the more high profile achievements Being an Aussie you must love your beer? What’s your favorite brand? I’m not much of a drinker but I do like light beers Heineken, Corona or even Modelo Negro - a dark ale from Mexico. What’s the freakiest dream you have ever had? Well there were these 3 bikini clad super models and me all by myself ........ha ha, actually I cant remember many dreams but the ones where family members die are pretty shocking.

OCULUS RIFT
Demoed recently at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Oculus Rift has been getting gamers and tech bloggers in something of a tizz, and is expected to be one of the biggest-selling new gadgets on the market in 2013. A virtual reality headset and one of three items on this list that were paid for by crowd-funding, in this case via the crowd-funding site Kickstarter. After raising $2.4million to develop the hardware, the Rift is now on the market and offers a 110 degree field of vision, more than double that of any competing devices. Uniquely, it tracks the wearer’s head movements, allowing them to turn their head 360 degrees and creating a world to get completely lost in. Slated for release in October 2013 (although perhaps later in the UK while licensing deals with British TV channels are negotiated), the iTV sees Apple finally make its move into the television market. If it’s able to revolutionise the industry in the way that it has for telecommunications, this could be truly huge. Integrating Mac systems with your regular television features, an added bonus of owning one of these could be the ability to use your iPhone as a remote control, as well as voice and facial recognition capabilities. Another product making a splash at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in the US is the Spirit One. GUERNSEY WAS INVADED BY ANTS MORE THAN THREE DECADES AGO. And about 80 of them collapsed with painted white stripes across their faces. One can be forgiven for thinking such an experience is pure fantasy and living in cloud cuckoo land but if one turns the clock back they will actually discover the unlikely phenomenon to be true. It occurred on the night of Sunday 8 June 1981 in the Sir John Loveridge Hall at Beau Sejour leisure centre as about 2,200 people gathered for an Adam and the Ants concert. It was reputedly the biggest standing audience to attend a rock concert in Guernsey up to that time in the island’s history. Many were New Romantics and had their faces painted with stripes, like the Dandy Highwayman who led the band, and some wore their Harrington jackets, adorned with badges and patches acquired from The Black Hole in the Arcade and other town-based music outlets. About a dozen voluntary St John Ambulance staff were kept busy as about 80 young people collapsed or fainted from over-excitement or the intense heat in the hall as fans crammed like sardines to get to near the front of the stage. Squash courts and a first aid room were required as cooling off posts. The band were cult figures at the time and about 100 fans gathered at Guernsey Airport to welcome them. They included Gary Young, aka

Dyrk, who followed them around the UK after moving to Leeds from Guernsey, and he was pictured on the front page of the Guernsey Press speaking to Adam Ant. Ticket demand was unprecedented in Guernsey - the billets originally cost £4.50 but sources suggested they were changing hands for £30 on the night for the 75-minute band’s show, which included two encores. Younger fans were allowed to view proceedings from the sports hall’s balcony. Police reported no problems on the night and the band’s management reported that the act enjoyed the crowd reaction. Initially, when the concert was announced, islanders staged an all-night vigil in heavy rain to grab tickets, with queues back to the tennis courts. There were 1,100 tickets available for Beau Sejour members and the 600 for non-members were snapped up rapidly. The centre’s management successfully applied to the Royal Court to increase the number of tickets by 500. Yvonne Le Pelley was there at the concert as Salle Publique Inspector for Building Control and her job was to monitor safety and fire precautions and ensure Beau Sejour stuck to the regulated number of people. ‘I remember all the youngsters with the painted streaks on their faces and a couple of girls fainting,’ she recalled.
GALLERY MAGAZINE MANAGED TO TRACK DOWN SOME OF THE VICTIMS, 30-PLUS YEARS ON. ‘I was one of the girls that fainted due to putting white boot polish stripes on my face and the fumes knocked me out,’ said Ann Mahy, who was aged 14 then. ‘I was made to wash off the boot polish by St John Ambulance staff but I put it back on and got carried out again,’ she laughed. Guernsey girl Juliette Le Lievre said: ‘I was there - my cousin fainted and I lost my voice from screaming so much.’ ‘I was there and right at the front and yes I fainted as well,’ said Sharon Bettles. Beau Sejour recreation assistant Liz Darling said: ‘All I remember about Adam Ant was how handsome he was - I saw him just after he had done his make-up.’ ‘We were very busy that night with loads of people fainting. I think at one point we had people in all three squash courts attended by St John Ambulance staff.’ Another recreation assistant Graham Chester recollects security being tight. ‘I was on the viewing gallery when the concert was on so could see all the kids getting shipped out because they had fainted.’

He remembered many people making excuses to try and get in. ‘The best one though was one dad had dressed his son up, who was about fiveyears-old, as Adam Ant. In fairness he’d made a good job of it but unfortunately he didn’t have a ticket, so there was no way in for him, much to his chagrin,’ said Mr Chester. ‘During the concert itself it got really hot in the hall and there were a number of people fainting, due to either dehydration, heat exhaustion or even overcome with emotion, or a mix of all three. We had to open the outer doors to the sports hall to let some air in but this in itself caused even more problems because there were loads of ticketless people stood outside the hall listening to the concert. When the doors got opened there was a surge, not necessarily to get in but to be able to see the stage. I’m sure there were some that got in but in the interest of safety, there wasn’t much else we could do.’ A youthful John Gollop, who went on to become a politician, remembers the band’s visit well. He was about 17 at the time and recalls them being the most fashionable act on the planet. ‘Yes, Rock snobs looked down on them and their fan base as Adam Ant was not trendy lefty intellectually and had no radical social message like The Jam or punk rockers and was not a great songwriter or metalman. Adam Ant’s core fan base was female teenyboppers and weenyboppers, children really for the most part and he may have had a gay following too, although I was not aware of that issue at the time,’ he claimed. ‘Adam was a forerunner and trendsetter of globally conscious eclectic ethnically flavoured ethnic music, make-up for guys, overt superstar egos and dressing up as camp androgynous modern romantics and new men.’ ‘Adam and the Ants attracted a huge, young, mostly female crowd, which were excited but not overly swoony or troublesome. The sight of twin drummers set on high with the curious sound influenced by Native American and African tribal drumming made a huge impact with the sound and charisma and rhythm ultimately being more important than real tuneful music or political street credibility,’ he said. ‘I found it a positive experience, prior to a period away at Uni, as it reminded us living on Guernsey as a young person did not necessarily mean we were provincial or outside the UK national music trends or fashion, and were were part of something big, just as the previous generation had lapped up Shirley Bassey, the Rolling Stones and The Beatles at Candie.’ He recalled record sales being huge locally at outlets like Teleskill, Boots, Woolworths, Fuzzeys and Number 19. ‘In contrast, except for some inspiring local live acts, it is a rather depressing scene of steady decline and marginalisation. Excepting Jersey Live and Sark Folk we are losing the opportunity to see big current acts,’ he claimed. Katina Jones recalled seeing Adam Ant before the gig at the top of town. ‘As he was coming out of the OGH he nearly fell over my pushchair silly man. I did not realise it was him for a bit as he had no make-up on,’ she said. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

It’s not every day that a Guernsey band gets to support one of the world’s biggest acts but that is exactly what happened to Rock Lobster, named after a song by the B52s. They comprised Tim Bran on guitar and vocals, his brother Chris on drums, Tim Hollingsworth on guitar and Roger Le Tissier on bass, playing original songs interspersed with tunes by The Clash, The Jam, The Buzzcocks and The Undertones. ‘I will never forget the gig that we did supporting Adam and the Ants,’ said Tim Bran. They were at number one in the UK music charts with Stand and Deliver the week they played in Guernsey. ‘Antmania was at its peak. I had been playing their albums pretty much on repeat since they came out. It was such a unique sound - thundering tribal drums, twangy guitars and Adam’s yelps and whoops to top it all off,’ he said. ‘It was definitely the biggest gig we ever played. Before that we played to small crowds of maybe up to 100 but never in front of thousands.’ ‘I remember we had to set up all our equipment in front of their two drum kits so that the changeover would be simple. Seeing the iconic dual drum kits and the Ant logo above them was awe inspiring at the time. I watched Marco Pirroni’s guitar roadie change the strings on his guitar during sound check and then the roadie gave me Marco’s guitar picks to keep,’ said Mr Bran. ‘The gig was a blur of excitement and nerves. We stood at the side of the stage when Adam and his ants played all their hits to the cheering crowds. It’s still in my top 5 gigs.’ Tim Hollingsworth remembers the crew turning up with two lorry loads of equipment and doing a sound check in the afternoon with a big mixing desk in the middle of the hall. ‘While things were being set up I spoke to Merrick, who was one of the drummers and a really nice guy. Then Adam came over. I am not a tall chap, but he was smaller than me and I was just amazed how tiny he was,’ he said. ‘The wonderful thing about the concert was not only achieving the contract, but also the atmosphere. It was an amazing experience and to have 2,000 people cheering you on just made the whole thing for me. After the gig all of Rock Lobster were covered in sweat and totally on a high and to see all those people with white stripes across their faces was a delight.’ ‘On stage you can’t really see further than the first two rows as the lights are too bright but to hear the applause and the fun people were having made everything worthwhile,’ said Mr Hollingsworth. ‘The whole band were lovely people, real gentlemen, and just a complete pleasure to talk to, no egos, just skilled at what they did, which is why it was such a pleasure to be their warmup band.’ Guernseyman Ian Duquemin and his friend Gary Young were two of Adam and the Ants’ biggest fans. He recalls them being one of the original London punk bands of the mid to late 70s, and although not as outrageous as the Sex Pistols, they were something different and very special. Although they had released only a few singles and an album during that time and starred in the

movie Jubilee, they had their own fan base that even reached Guernsey before they hit the big time, he said. He said Gary was a fan from the beginning but when the Kings of the Wild Frontier album was released everything changed. ‘They became the biggest band in the world overnight and went from punk to pop superstars instantly,’ said Mr Duquemin. ‘But to the original punks this was still a great album and band - the new Ant music just happened to appeal to every kid and mum, whereas the first album ‘Dirk wears white socks’ was unheard of outside of the punk movement.’ Ian moved to Leeds in 1980, where he met Gary, and he worked in a punk club called the F Club. They had met Adam a couple of times and when they heard the band was playing in Guernsey, they headed to the island and the airport. Adam noticed Gary when he got off the plane and the pair were put on the guest list and given passes to the after-party. ‘The island was buzzing on the night of the concert - not only did we have the biggest band in the world on the island but everyone was there - mums, dads, children and two rather pissed off punks watching on as the manic crowd with plasters on their noses sang out to the now famous hits of one of our bands,’ said Mr Duquemin. ‘When the Ants were on stage, it was something to be excited about, not only because of the main man himself, but Marco on lead guitar and of course two drummers.’ ‘Adam always was the showman - his energy was electric and in his swashbuckling costume he whipped the crowd into a frenzy, with hit after hit. This really was a massive event that we were all privileged to have attended, and one that brought a whole Island together,’ he said. Adam Ant was born Stuart Goddard and he had 16 hits and sold 15 million records in his glampunk heyday. He also had bi-polar syndrome and related mental health issues, which saw him sectioned in 2010. If you did not get the chance to see Adam and the Ants last time around you will get the opportunity to see the lead singer again in the island later this year. And judging from the reviews I have heard from friends in Leeds on the comeback tour, he is now better than ever, not only performing the hits that gave him the title of the number one frontman of the 80s, but adding the early songs for his original fans,’ said Mr Duquemin. ‘I already have my ticket - and can’t wait to see the Dandy Highwayman back on stage in 2013.’ Gallery magazine will be offering readers the chance to win tickets to the gig in a future issue watch this space!

VR: What format will you be releasing it on? iTunes? TTT: iTunes. SoundCloud. Amazon. CD’s, DVD’s, Blu Ray! VR: Vinyl? TTT: Oh yeah, Vinyl. We’re going to call people up and sing it down the phone… VR: It’s going to be mad!
After reading that their mission is to be “an adrenaline shot to liven up” (the sometimes mundane and monotonous) music scene, I was looking forward to hearing what these young lads had to say; and the Keep Music Live event at The Fermain Tavern was the perfect opportunity to catch them for a chat. The band started off proceedings by lightheartedly informing me that local celebrity John Gollop almost permanently re-named them as Ten Ton Trouble, after making an error on a Facebook update to his several thousand friends.
TTT: Come round to their house and play… VR: So what was your first gig experience together? TTT: As a band? Chaos Festival last year. That was the first one. We opened up the beer tent on the Saturday, on the main stage which was marvellous.
TTT: Nine pound problem? We’ll see if that [name] picks up.
VR: A bit Barry White? TTT: Just chuck it on while you do your thing. It has horrible lyrics and sincere songs. VR: When can people expect to get their hands on it?

TTT: Yeah, they just don’t stop. Well to be honest there’s no one ever there to distract us. Don’t put that in. Hahaha. VR: Do you find it scarier playing your own songs? Like you’re naked in front of the crowd? TTT: Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it’s a bit like… They don’t actually know how the song goes, so if you screw up it’s kind of okay. But it’s like. What if they just don’t like the song. There’s a certain kind of audience that won’t care whether you’re good or bad as long as they know the song. So if you play like s***, they’ll still love it.
VR: Is there anything else you want to say to round it all up? VR: Opening up is always interesting because you always have a few stragglers about, a few eager beavers… TTT: Yeah, yeah, there was a mixture. It started on the Friday, so a lot of people were still drunk. Our two biggest fans were these two eight year old kids who were rocking out at the front of the stage. VR: So do you get many groupies running after you getting all excited? TTT: Ah yeah. Don’t even start. I had to get a restraining order put in. VR: Did you actually?

VR: I suppose, getting bras in your face and all up in your hair…
I think we are going to see what we can do with the recording and just take it from there.
VR: Are you recording on the island then? Is it an “in your attic” kind of job?
TTT: *Whistles* Music, Love, Romance. It’s great music to make love to.
TTT: Throwing their knickers. That gets a bit annoying.
TTT: Ever and ever. Probably stick together.
TTT: It’s a work in progress. We’ve got all our recording done, but have bits to re-record it all and do the final touches.
VR: Right so, what should people expect from the album which is on the way?
VR: Ohh….well that ruined it for me. Does anybody ever distract you in the crowd, like if they do a particular thing?
VR: So where do you guys see yourselves going? Are you going to be together forever?
VR: So I hear you’re currently working on your album?
TTT: Yeah. At [Elliott] Mariess’ studio. He’s up and coming, so we’re his practise run.
TTT: No, hahahaha.
TTT: I’d like to thank my mum and… VR: Well hopefully we can get people knowing that your name isn’t TEN Ton Trouble… TTT: Ahahaha. That’s how we should end it. We are Twelve Ton Trouble. Not Ten Ton Trouble. Don’t get us mixed up. This band have a sound which is as raw as sushi, and as inviting as a pint of Rocquettes on a boiling day.
