We’ve had quite a few changes at Gallery for 2014. A new team of local professionals rearing to go, a new ratecard and new packages for clients. We’re raising the game within our defined editorial sections and have added new business distribution by mail and door. By embracing local talent and doing things the right way, G allery is set to affirm its position as Guernsey’s premium periodical. Cut through the media clutter with Guernsey’s most style consicous marketing platform. Gallery was established in the Channel Islands in 2004. The Channel Islands media landscape had, at that point, never been progressive and Gallery sought to create a magazine that was both visually and editorially engaging to entertain a forward thinking readership. We’ve always had a bit of a thing against the term ‘lifestyle magazine’. In 2011 Gallery expanded beyond origins in Jersey to the Isle of Man and then arrived in Guernsey in 2011. Initially operated under franchise, Gallery was officially established in November 2013. In recent years it seems everyone with a printer and some sales banter has a lifestyle magazine. Big expensive ones, small cheaper ones, some that are schizophrenic. Gallery is different, our focus is on quality and going an extra mile. Now one of the longest established independent media title in the Islands, Gallery strives to asume the role as media of choice for style conscious and forward thinking consumers and the brands that wish to reach them. Gallery is A4, with market leading production and we’re far from square. It is the essential companion for the discerning Island resident. We’re more about mindset than age and we find gallery is consumed by readers of all ages, with a core between 18 to 50. Gallery runs as an organised and categorised magazine that caters to specific sectors in defined editorial environments. Although we are advertising funded, we are also never more than one quarter full with advertising or advertorial. Each month Gallery is themed and is full of cultural and lifestyle features that include a fashion shoot using local fashion, models and stylists, beauty product and treatment reviews, home and property features and profiles, restaurant reviews and food features, local culture and music events, reviews and listings, test drives and motoring pages, and a tri-annual recruitment special. learn more overleaf.
For 2014 we’ll also be expanding our coverage of the Channel Island business market with our new Agenda section.

It’s hard to be all things to all people but by maintaining a fresh editorial tone of voice through specialist, organised sections, Gallery tries harder than most. Our mission is to provide engaging content for culture vultures, fashionistas, gadget freaks, petrolheads, style icons, movers and shakers alike. By creating a magazine that people actually look forward to, Gallery flies out of our hundreds of distribution outlets from the 1st of each month.

Some magazines place advertising willy nilly with three or four discrepant ads on the same page aganist irrelevant editorial. Premium preening next to bargain butchers doesn’t work in our book. Gallery is the only locai magazine with specialist sections in each edition. Each section has a strong editorial lead and offers our clients the most appropriate environment for their marketing.

Who is Gallery’s target audience?

Gallery’s mission to ‘educate, amuse and entertain’ isn’t exclusive or prejudice. We don’t believe age or income should dictate enjoyment. Whether you’re 18 or 80, if you have a sense of humour and an interest in popular culture, we hope you’ll find something you like in Gallery. Our pull distribution means our readership are ‘opt in’ readers. Our readers choose Gallery because they love it, and that’s why we love them. From CEOs to OAPs, VIPs to MIAs, Gallery appeals across the board. When you communicate with a gallery reader, you do so in a magazine they have chosen over others, creating the best environment for effective marketing messages. 9
Advertising Media Rates INCLUSION RATES We’ve dropped our media rates for 2014. We realise it sounds like an odd thing to do. The reason that the prices had been set high by the company that previously operated Gallery under franchise was due to the nature of the Guernsey advertising market to price up and knock down. It’s just like those people that sell hammocks on the beach in Thailand or rugs in Marrakesh. You know the scenario; you’re approached by a charming gentlemen who tells you his hammock/rug is £50. You realise that, let’s face it, you’re not going to use it and don’t want it, but you’re encouraged to heckle, banter and negotiate. Before you know it you’ve walked away having spent £20 on a rug, not sure whether you’ve got a good deal of whether it’s really just something you didn’t really want. We’d rather buy a quality rug for £50. We don’t have enough trees for a hammock. Very few businesses can afford to slash their rates to a fraction of the official cost. Not unless you’re that guy with odd hair that sells UPVC windows on TV. Imagine adopting that strategy with your business. You may be able to make a margin, if you sold 1000 items. In truth, you’d have to cut costs to lower your prices and lower your standard of service. That’s what happened to the advertising market in Guernsey. We’d rather produce a quality product. The reason we’ve adjusted our ratecard is that we have faith in our fees. We structure our pricing to allow for independent features to be generated for our clients, usually in the same ratio as the amount of space purchased as part of a campaign. Selling something half price just means there’s no space for that and a magazine becomes slapdash, ad heavy and a little bit rubbish. That’s not what we want for Gallery, not on our watch.

2014 issue themes and dates Each issue of Gallery is presented on a theme that allows us to create a structured and engaging issue each month . We have outlined the issue themes and relevant deadlines below.
We like our magazine to be out at the beginning of the month. In order to make that happen we have an editorial deadline on or before the 15th of the previous month. If clients are sending in finished artwork they are able to do so until the 22nd.

delivery & distribution When it comes to distribution, we make a stand. Our wide stand based distribution caters to a island wide audience, coupled with business distribution to 1000 key business locations using a specialist distribution firm and direct through the mail to key decision makers.
Whilst other magazines employ a ‘push’ distribution strategy, Gallery opt for reader pull. Our readers hunt for Gallery each month. WHERE? By carefully selecting shops, department stores, boutiques, cafes, restaurants and offices we make sure Gallery is put in places where our target audience can find it. Distribution is a bit of a passion for Gallery. We get our magazines out on the 1st of the month and take pleasure in dropping thousands of magazines off to our audience with a full month of reading ahead of them. HOW MANY? A successful advertising medium doesn’t need to be shoved up people’s noses to be effective. Whilst other people door drop and claim to print gazzilions of copies, we try and get it just right. We’ve carried our research on varying our volume and with a target audience of 18,000 and a read-on rate of 2-3, 6,000 is the golden number. Sure, we could print more to cater to schoolchildren and pensioners but they’re not our audience. Our key 20-50 demographic with buy up from teens and buy up from style conscious silver surfers creates the perfect volume. We hate waste and to throw away a magazine that has cost us £3.00 to produce would break our hearts! Instead, we print the perfect amount, place them in the best places and let people look forward to picking us up. We’ll be initiating our very own recycling awareness initiative in 2014 too. NEW! POSTAL DISTRIBUTION ON THE AGENDA We do understand that targeted distribution is key so, for 2014, we’re also adding a key decision maker mailing list to our agenda supplement issues, adding 500 editions that will go right into the hands of the island’s business leaders.
