e hope you are well and applying healthy amounts of sunscreen in what looks to be one of the best summer seasons our gorgeous little Island has ever experienced. The team at Gallery are also basking in the warmth of the amazing feedback we’ve had over the past month. It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since our team took on Gallery. It takes a lot of hard work to be the best we can be and the support from Guernsey has been overwhelming. Your messages, cards, answerphone feedback and positive comments have all been greatly appreciated and help us to build and improve. Other publications have changed their strategy and become schizophrenic as they attempt to emulate Gallery. Good for them, we’re happy to continue in the role of bar-raiser and imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, after all. Having stripped out the Chaff, Gallery is now more wheaty; has the walk, and a small but honest team to do the talk. We know that this behaviour is something to which Guernsey residents are entitled and appreciate. It’s a small part of the planet, but nowhere is more worthy. We’re small too, but we have the skills and we pay our bills. This month we focus on all things Compact. We asked some major Guernsey figures to contribute and asked them why they thought our Compact Island is so great. Our fashion shoot proves yet again that we’re the best there is at what we do – unparalleled skill and artistic flair courtesy of our talented Glam Squad, which showcases some of Guernsey’s hottest fashion items and styling tips just for you. We’ve teamed up with world famous chef Jamie Oliver and Gallery fan DJ BBQ along with B&Q to give readers a chance of winning some very special BBQ kit in our big summer giveaway. What can I say... < FREEDOM Compact dogs fit into handbags and your compact wardrobe should probably only contain a maximum of two variations on the leather mini skirt - even though everyone knows you need at least three. It seems that for some, even our lives should be tightly packed. Ensure we entertain Yoga class during our lunchtimes and maintain the vegetable patch on our balcony. But at the same time, we seek to live our lives ‘without limits’. Do you have to pack your lives full of targets and deadlines in order to somehow be free? This is the sort of question I ask myself frequently in the manner of someone trying to remember some of what they learnt in their first year university Philosophy course.

So I’ve reached a crossroads and been thinking lately whether or not choice is making our modern lives a bit difficult. The happiest I’ve ever been was when I used to work at (and steal jelly beans from) Woolworths aged 14. If only nobody filled my head with silly ambition, and if only the chain didn’t go bust (which was most probably not because of the bean theft), I could still be riding that polyester-clad sugar high, instead of searching for a career path that will give me some tailored idea of intellectual gratification and material gain. But money makes the world go round. With money you can buy all the soda streams and pot plants your heart desires. One theory goes that it’s more moral to restrict yourself and your generosity in

life down to nil, until you have made a substantial fortune. Then, if you so wished, you would be in a position to donate a greater amount than you might have done with a lifetime of smaller donations. Living the compact life means simultaneously setting yourself targets and limits, as there’s only so much you can cram into a lifetime. Another supporting theory for setting yourself targets and establishing limits is so that you don’t end up being a completely useless waste of space and a burden to your friends and relatives. If this sounds like I’m giving you life-tips based on any degree of success in this area, trust me I’m not. I realised recently though that I work to deadlines every

day. I don’t keep on top of daily tasks like eyebrow plucking, paying parking tickets or emptying out the ashtray because I am a thrill seeker who loves knowing I’m going to have to sort my life out in a matter of seconds if someone happens to knock on the door.

Honestly, all I want to do is live in a lighthouse with my many cats, but all of a sudden I’m wondering whether I’d regret it if I never studied archaeology or bought a boat or had some babies as well. People are opting out of marrying young and sticking in the same jobs, all of their lives. A world of opportunity is leading a

Switching up jobs and friendship circles and netball teams just so you can have a pop at everything on offer might seem like a strange way to do it for some, but for lots that’s what life is all about; packing up your leather mini skirt and rolling with the punches.

What makes our compact Island so great? We handpicked a select group of Guernsey’s more noticeable figures and asked them to tell us why they love our compact isle so much. We start with one of Guernsey’s loudest and proudest, the man behind the mouth - Jon Ozanne from BBC Radio Guernsey.

explore the stand at The Track and imagine a time back in 1951 when some 12,000 crowded the grounds to see Guernsey win the Muratti Vase. The detail that you find while out and about gathering stories always amazes me. From children that stare out at you with small packed suitcases in pictures at the Occupation Museum, parish abreuvoirs that remind us of cattle and farming as an island activity, to wooden beams in old St Peter Port shops that are made from ships’ masts. This history and identity all make Guernsey seem so much bigger. On Saturdays I sometimes treat Guernsey’s south coast as part of an island playground. One where I will break the elusive four miles an hour walking pace along the entire cliff.

Just after university I tried my luck at stand up comedy. My set included a piece on the size of Guernsey. ‘It’s small, like very small, like eight by five miles small. That’s small. The airport is almost two miles long, we didn’t have a school bell but would change lessons when flights took off. It made for a long double science if it was foggy’. Whizz forward several years and I’m here on the rock loving it; genuinely loving it. It’s still the same size but I’m lucky enough to have a job that gets me to almost every nook and cranny. Just last week I got to

terrific and a chat over a kiosk tea, or cream tea soon calms any aching joints. Cycling in Guernsey is always fun. I used to race everywhere but now I gently take it all in. Sorry if you’ve been stuck behind me on Les Val Des Terres, I do have a couple of pull in points so be patient. I think Guernsey actually changes as you grow up. As a child it was adventures of a tropical bamboo wilderness in Saumarez Park, an empty Vale Castle that I filled with knights and sword fights, or the neverending supply of beaches and bays that I swam a bit further in each visit. And now as an adult? Well that’s Guernsey’s trick, at one point it’s a field in Pleinmont, then it’s a music festival. The Vale Castle sees knights once more, on stage this time, though the Shakespearian variety are far less noble than I had imagined. And the beach I used play on has become an outdoor kitchen for my signature marinated monkfish BBQ. So what does Guernsey hold for me in the future? I’m not actually sure, I know getting out there is the key to enjoying it and I don’t want that to slow down as time goes on. Yesterday I saw an older gent on a bike getting a better speed up La Charroterie than what I can muster. It was only when he got nearer I realised he was on an electric bike. So that’s the answer - being out and about no matter what your age, my compact, enormous playground continues to be there for the taking.

I am not sure whether it is because of Guernsey’s long and more recent painful history of overcoming extreme adversity, or the relative isolation of such a small and condensed island, but I have not experienced the strength of feeling and pride, and sense of belonging to a nation that I have in Guernsey.

‘A small island with a big history’, is how we recently described our heritage rich island in our marketing materials promoting the 2014 ‘Guernsey Heritage Festival’, and having lived on the island now for nearly six years I have been continually amazed by the amount of remarkable and fascinating things I discover on a daily basis about the beautiful islands of the Bailiwick. The extent of this really struck home to me during my holiday this year to another beautiful island; Mauritius. During our taxi drive from the airport to our hotel, our ebullient driver enthused about his wonderful home. He proudly boasted about its long history, striking interior and stunning coastline, the islands rich supply of local produce and seafood, its famous hospitality and its happy and eclectic mix of cultures, inhabitants and languages, concluding, “and all of this all contained within an island that is only 65 miles by 30 miles!’ “Wow” I said “sounds fabulous.”, however quietly thinking to myself, “We can beat that.” We come from a small island that is only eight miles by five miles, and we pack so much more in to our compact and beautifully formed island.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

Our history and heritage can be traced back for thousands of years, not just five or six hundred years. Any visitor to Guernsey can experience the ethereal nature of the Dolman interiors, dating back to 4500 BC, through to the solid fortifications and many Loophole and Martello towers, dotted along our coastline, which traces Guernsey’s history back to the 14th century, and then there are the more recent relics of the First and Second World War. Agreed Mauritius has a stunning coastline of coral reefs and palm tree lined beaches, but where else can you experience in one day the variety of our breath taking views over to our neighbouring islands from our ocean battered cliffs, to the silky fine and brilliant white sandy beaches of Herm and our west coast. A favourite spot in Mauritius is Cap Malheureux, with its famous red topped Catholic Church which adorns many of its postcards and sits facing its neighbouring islands. Again wonderful, but whilst wondering down the adjoining beach, our majestic Little Chapel, and the magnificent view from Fermain Bay, or from Castle Cornet over to Herm and Sark immediately entered my mind, “More than a match.” I thought.

Where else can you sit down to a succulent freshly cooked lobster salad for £15, definitely not in Mauritius, try six times that price! And lastly the people and the warmth of welcome of any place is what really makes or breaks the experience. I have to say the Mauritians were wonderful, as it was clear to see that they were immensely proud of their island, and were keen for us to enjoy every minute of our stay. However I am not sure whether it is because of Guernsey’s long and more recent painful history of overcoming extreme adversity, or the relative isolation of such a small and condensed island, but I have not experienced the strength of feeling and pride, and sense of belonging to a nation that I have in Guernsey. It is clear to anyone who visits the island that it’s the people that make the Guernsey experience special.

The French influence is clear to see and hear in Mauritius. French is the prevailing language, introduced in the seventeenth century during French rule, and place and road names follow suite. Guernsey French

embrace community life without relying on the local government to provide solutions. The Dandelion Project, for instance, and all the individual local charities which form the backbone of support for islanders, are motivated and committed. For those who were told “you can’t” - they are proof that ‘you certainly can’ if you request and seek change openly enough. When I co-founded the local charity YPG (Young People Guernsey) we were questioned by many as to what the need was. Since opening The Hub we have offered advice and guidance to hundreds of local children when they needed it most by bringing the incredible, professional services of Barnardos to Guernsey. If we had sat back and expected others to provide this service for us, chances are, it may never have happened.

SIMON TORODE I AM GUERNSEY

I was born on the rock we call Guernsey 37 years ago. I believe there’s always something that intrinsically links you to where you were born but to ‘a true Guern’ it is far more than just being islandborn. Every little piece of Guernsey’s panorama has a relevance to me and my family whether it be a piece of land, a shop, a house, a road or somewhere where something previously stood like the Odeon cinema on St. Julian’s Avenue where I watched my first film with my late Gran. I don’t think you can take for granted just how magical it is to live here. Of course Guernsey has its faults as everywhere does. Is it too compact? There have been times where I can honestly say I have felt claustrophobic and escaped, but that flight home to Guernsey, from far flung locations, always gives me an elated feeling of coming home. How many people around the world can say that about where they grew up? Those that know me will know that I enjoy history, but embrace change, which is a hard task in an island that often creates barriers at the sheer mention of ‘doing something differently.’ I don’t take well to negativity. I never have. Perhaps my biggest bugbear of island life, where everyone has a voice to be heard, is

that often that voice is negative. I do what I do to ignore negativity where there is no sound reason and I try to have a more positive outlook on life. There is a great George Bernard Shaw quote: “Progress is impossible without change and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”

...times are changing and it appears that others are joining together to form a more dynamic and challenging community and I, for one, can see exciting times ahead.

In June of this year, a good friend (John Hibbs) and I launched a competition to all islanders called ‘I am Guernsey.’ I am Guernsey is the epitome of a positive mind set – focussing on how we can make our island even better; it’s a platform for people to express personal designed ideas for Guernsey without concern for policy or red tape. I am Guernsey aims to spark the imaginations of everyone in Guernsey with a passion for the island in which we live. I am Guernsey is more than a concept; we hope that the ideas generated in this competition will form part of planning for the future for Guernsey. If there is anything I have learnt about this compact little rock, it is about taking responsibility and hopefully creating positive change without reading any prehistoric instruction manuals about how island life should be. CO-FOUNDER, THE DANDELION PROJECT To me, Guernsey’s greatest asset is its size. It has taken me a long time to admit that, I must say. As a kid growing up here, its smallness used to drive me mad, especially when exposed to all the exciting goings on elsewhere in the world. Back then, to me, small equalled dull and backward. Now, I think the opposite. Small equals unlimited opportunity. To me, Guernsey as a nation has infinite potential, and its compact size is at the very heart of that potential. I just don’t see it the way most people do. I could quite easily go on about Guernsey being a beautiful gem in the English Channel with more sunshine hours than its neighbours... etc, but that would be ignoring the real problem ­and consequently the huge opportunity w ­ e have. Underneath this small but beautifully formed exterior lies the same human tragedy as many other places in the world. Guernsey is a microcosm of the Western condition. We have created many of the same problems suffered by everyone else in the west:

We have an education system that educates us to get exam results, rather than to be happy.

We have an ‘illness system,’ rather than a health system.

We are doing jobs we don’t love, to pay for things that we don’t need.

We have to work harder, because the more we work, the more we earn, the more house prices and living costs rise­ and the harder we need to work to pay for them.

We have a staggeringly high mental health problem.

We have up to 10,000 people (out of 65,000) who live in relative poverty.

We import the overwhelming majority of what we eat, although we used to be a food exporter.

We have an oil fired power station and import nuclear energy, while we have an abundance of natural resources all around us.

We have a political system designed in antiquity, in which no one takes charge and doesn’t get the best out of those that work it.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

We are engulfed by news media that focuses on negativity, against the best interests of the community.

We worship heroes from foreign lands on screen and in magazines ­and yet the real heroes within our community remain largely unsupported. 
And here lays the wonder of being small. We live in one of the few places in the world where we can actually solve these problems. Guernsey is the size of a town, yet is also a fully operational country. It just happens that you can have a coffee with everyone who works in the system, because they only live within a few miles of you. 
And that means change can happen. 
 Bureaucracy is the biggest barrier to global progress ­and we have one of the smallest national bureaucracies in the world. When we realise that the same mechanisms that created our successful finance industry can be used to change the world, then we will start to live our true potential. 
 There are many beautiful places to live in the world, but Guernsey has something that few places have. It has the opportunity to lead the world in reinventing society. It can make a contribution to improving the world that no other country has yet achieved. Its compact size is the key to making that happen. 
That is why I love it here. That is why I live here. That is why I feel we can all make a difference here. 
And in this way, small is definitely beautiful.

This year’s annual Rocquaine Regatta will begin at 9.30am and will run through the day until 6.00pm. An event with a long distinguished reputation, the regatta is a full day of free activities and entertainment for those of all ages. There will be the usual beach and stage events, sandcastles, inshore swimming and sailing, as well as raft races, 5-a-side football and volleyball and even a mini-macho contest. The GSPCA brings you this inaugural Pie & Mash Bingo Bash on Wednesday 6th August 2014 at 7.00pm. If well attended they hope to make this a regular event. The venue is the Market Bistro inside the Market Building in St Peter Port. There will be a choice of pies to have with your mash: Either chicken, steak and ale, or vegetarian. The bingo will have cash prizes and there will also be a raffle, with all proceeds going to the GSPCA Animal Shelter to help fund the care of animals in Guernsey.

THE SOUTH SHOW 08/08/14 – 09/08/14 The South Show returns with entertainment and community activities. Increased recycling at Guernsey Airport leads to more bins Pirates in the making!

Local businesses keep young sailors afloat Sponsorship from local businesses has made it possible for the Guernsey Sailing Trust to begin renewing its dinghy fleet. The Trust has recently replaced six of its ‘Laser Picos’ - a single handed dinghy that is very suitable for intermediate junior sailors. “Each year almost a thousand young people come to the Trust to receive sailing tuition,” said Trust principal Adam Reed. “As a charity we rely on the support of local businesses and fundraising to help us keep our fleet up to date and up to code so that we can provide those young people with a safe and fun environment where they can learn to sail. “Each Pico will be very well used and we are very grateful to our sponsors for their help.” The new dinghies are sponsored by Butterfield, Intersurgical, BWCI, F Watson and Sons, Creaseys (M&S) and by a private donor.

Two more dedicated recycling stations are being installed at Guernsey Airport to cope with increasing amounts of recyclables. In 2012, AFM donated four purpose built bins, which were put in different positions around the terminal. Each bin had segregated containers for paper and magazines, plastic bottles and also general waste. The volume of recyclables collected means AFM has now given two more. ‘Guernsey Airport has been recycling newspapers, magazines and bottles since 2007 and with 900,000 passengers using the terminal each year as well as thousands more islanders passing through as they say goodbye to family and friends or collect people, we have diverted many tonnes of recyclable waste away from Mont Cuet,’ said airport director Colin Le Ray.

Islanders are being asked to donate old sports kit to raise funds for children in South Africa by local charity Goal50 and Public Services. The charity has launched the campaign during Waste Awareness Week as ‘Project500’ and arranged a drop off point at Intersport, where people will be able to donate their old kit. This will then be sold on the Project500 Facebook page and all proceeds will go to The Great Commission Soccer Academy in the Cape Flats, Cape Town. Any unsold kit will be sent to South Africa. Nigel Pascoe formed Goal50 in 2010 with South African charity Great Commission United, which aims to use football to help Cape Town’s street children develop the necessary skills to move forward in life.

Autism charities across the islands are set to benefit from the efforts of JT’s staff during their annual Global Charity Day, which was held on the 20th June 2014 and raised a total of £4,685. For the third consecutive year, JT has supported Autism charities and the annual Global Charity Day focuses the efforts of staff across its offices in Guernsey, Jersey, London, Boston and Melbourne to have some fun and raise funds for a shared cause at the same time. Activities during the day included an ‘annual leave’ raffle, cake sales and office games; while staff in the islands literally ‘jumped’ for autism by taking part in Jumping fitness sessions outside the JT stores in both St. Peter Port and St. Helier.

Local architectural design practice PF+A, in association with Home Start Guernsey, is calling all golfers to take part in a charity “Drive to St Andrews” challenge. The charity golf drive will be held on Sunday 24th August and is challenging teams of golfers to hit a combined distance of 1,000km (621 miles) the equivalent distance from Guernsey to the famous home of golf in St Andrews, Scotland. The event is the brainchild of John Hibbs, director of strategy at PF+A, and will be held at the driving range of the Royal Guernsey Golf Club. “Drive to St Andrews” will start at 6am and finish at 8pm on the August Bank Holiday Sunday and PF+A would like to encourage as many regular golfers as possible, whatever their ability to form a team.

Garenne group get on their bikes to raise £15,000

Louvre Mountain Biker Louvre Fund has announced that of one of Guernsey’s brightest young mountain bike stars, Hannah English, has been awarded a new, annual sports grant. Hannah was selected for British Cycling’s Olympic Talent Programme for 2014 and is a regular podium finisher in the National and Southern Regional MTB Championships. Louvre’s commitment to sport in Guernsey will see them roll out a series of grants and sponsorship packages during 2014 and beyond. Louvre Group has eight top Guernsey sportspeople working as part of their team.

Kids: Stay Active this Summer for £1! The Guernsey Sports Commission is encouraging young people to stay active this summer by taking part in their Quids in Sports Programme due to run during the School Holidays. The Ray Lowe Sporting Foundation and Liberation Management Limited have sponsored the programme for the duration of 2014 and their continued support ensures that we can offer all of these opportunities to young people for only £1! A TEAM from Garenne Group which took part in the London to Brighton bike ride has beaten its fundraising target of £10,000. The 20-strong team took part in the 54-mile long bike ride, which is said to be Europe’s biggest fundraising cycle ride and attracted 28,000 riders. The Garenne team aimed to raise £5,000 for the event’s main charity, the British Heart Foundation with Garenne Group pledging to match the amount and donate it to Guernsey Chest and Heart. ‘The support we have had from family, friends and clients has been amazing and we had already beaten our fundraising target before we set off. We have now raised at least £7,500 for the British Heart Foundation and Garenne Group has agreed to match that for Guernsey Chest and Heart,’ said Garenne Group chief executive officer Andy Hall.

‘I’m in’ Islanders are being asked to show their support for efforts to reduce waste by signing up to some simple changes that can help make a big difference. The new ‘One More Thing’ pledge campaign is looking to highlight the strong community involvement in recycling and other waste reduction initiatives. Public Services hopes thousands of islanders will sign up to show their support. Everyone is therefore being invited to consider one more thing they can do to reduce their own waste, and help the island reach its recycling targets.

Looking ahead to the Jersey 2015 Island Games, The Guernsey Island Games Association has announced the recipients of the 2014 Generali Worldwide sports bursaries. GIGA’s sponsor, Generali Worldwide provides financial support to Island Games sports on an annual basis and this year six sports will receive a bursary. Triathlon, tennis, table tennis, golf, archery and badminton will all receive grants with funds going to help the development of the sport on the island. ‘The Island Games is a competitive highlight for many athletes. The Generali Worldwide bursary scheme was created to help the teams with their Games preparation but also to support the on-going health of that sport in Guernsey, which is one of GIGA’s objectives,’ says Brian Allen, GIGA Chairman.

Our top young golfers are getting behind Male Uprising Guernsey with a special fundraising activity. A sponsored golf marathon will see members of the 22-man Guernsey Golf Development Squad, sponsored by ABN AMRO, play as many holes as possible in one day. The players, who will be wearing MUG branded kit provided by the male cancer charity, will rotate throughout the day playing at La Grande Mare, St Pierre Park and Sausmarez Manor Short Course. It’s our compact edition and we thought we’d address the issue of compact people and correct classification. So, what makes a midget a midget and a dwarf a dwarf? Well... A dwarf is an extremely short adult who is less than 58 inches tall. Dwarfism is a condition of short stature. It is defined by the advocacy group Little People of America (LPA) as an adult height of 4ft 10 inches or under, as a result of a medical or genetic condition. The word midget is considered derogatory and offensive. Both words describe a short person, but refer to different physical characteristics and genetic conditions. "Midget" refers to a person who is very short, but normally proportioned. The term midget is now rarely used. But its usage was very common until the end of the twentieth century. It has given way to "short person" or "little person". With reference to legends or folklore, a dwarf is considered a legendary creature resembling a tiny old man, who lives in the depths of the earth and guards buried treasure. Quite a responsibility.

Our very own Channel Islands is home to the smallest prison in the World! It may not be in our island of Guernsey, but it is very close to home. Sark Prison (believe it or not, in Sark) was built in 1856 and only has one room fit for two prisoners at a time. With only 600 people living on Sark and no cars, we’re guessing it isn’t used too often. Ideal for when somebody is caught drink riding their horse home from the pub.

This miniscule fur ball is in fact the World’s smallest teddy bear. Created by German artist Bettina Kaminski, this teddy bear is only 5mm tall. We wouldn’t recommend falling asleep with this little guy, he’ll have left you all alone by the morning.

SHORT OF FAMOUS One of our staff thought that Pharrell Williams could have been in the category to the left. It turns out he is 5”9’, not THAT short but short enough to warrant a crazy hat, all the time. So the question is... who are the shortest celebrities? To make it fair, I only looked at celebrities under 5”5’. Starting with the shortest of the short females, it appears that ‘Pitch Perfect’ star Anna Kendrick is first at only 5’0” along with Kourtney Kardashian and Jada Pinkett Smith. Personally I thought Anna Kendrick didn’t look that small in Pitch Perfect but then again maybe all of her co-stars were small too. Next up on the female list are Ellen Page, Kristen Bell and.. Lady Gaga?! All three of these stars are only just above the height of Kendrick and measure to be 5”1’. So yes, while you thought that Lady Gaga looked tall in her iconic meat dress, when put next to Cher in that same evening, she looks way smaller. To be fair, Cher’s hair adds a few inches to her height. At my height, 5”2’ are Kim Kardashian, Sharon Osbourne, Reese Witherspoon and Eva Longoria. It’s nice to know that being 5”2’ means that you’re the same height as some of the most iconic celebrities of the modern day. Coming first for the shortest male celebrity, known for his part in ‘Matilda’ and ‘Deck the Halls’, is Danny Devito Jr who is just out of the Dwarf stakes at 5ft. I don’t want this to seem as though I find short people funny for their height, I’m short too, but this comical actor’s height adds to the comedy of the parts he plays. Shooting straight up to 5”4’ are Seth Green, Michael J. Fox and Emilio Estevez. This means that in reality, some of the greatest celebrities are short, which gives us short people hope.

SMALLEST ISLAND BUILDING

This towering structure in the middle of the sea is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s smallest island with a building on it, Bishop Rock, Isles of Scilly, only has room for its lighthouse. We’re guessing they don’t have Gallery Magazine there, and that’s enough to make anyone want to stay away.

Don’t let the phone booth-y appearance fool you into thinking this isn’t a crime busting institute. This Police station in Carrabelle, Florida keeps the world a much safer place (apparently).

Last month Guernsey celebrated the centenary of the Victor Hugo statue unveiling. The statue was originally publicly unveiled in a ceremony on the 7th July 1914. A party of French dignitaries were brought from Cherbourg on the ‘Vera’ for the occasion which was also attended by Guernsey officials and thousands of islanders. There was a delegation of guests from France including

descendants of Victor Hugo’s family and the Conseil Générale of La Manche. There was music from local bands and performers including the Les Miserables singers, Boys Brigade band and the Scout band. After the speeches and unveiling of the statue, Guernsey Concert Brass played on the terrace before the delegates moved on to attend a Vin d’Honneur at Hauteville House.

Sark Folk Festival is now in its fifth successful year. At the beginning of July the tiny island played host to everything from sea shanty male choirs to all girl ukulele bands. Festival go-ers were treated to three days of acts, and there wasn’t just music on offer.Crafts and food stalls were all part of the entertainment spread across several stages dotted around the island. Highlights included acts like

The Recks, Buffalo Huddleston and The Barley Dogs who brought the house down with the more energetic folk sounds. Fans of acoustic had countless chilled out sets to witness throughout the weekend. Despite the relentless downpour, in all, hundreds of revellers enjoyed local and national acts; ate, drank and were very merry.

As part of the the summer town carnival festivities, a 4-piece steel drum band entertained islanders (and tourists) during their sunny strolls around the main town of St Peter Port. Onlookers beamed and clapped along to the huge repertoire of traditional

and contemporary covers produced by the talented steel drummers, and the more confident and sun-drunk danced away their lunch hours to the carnival sounds.

After the success of last year’s event, the Town Centre Partnership repeated its black tie classical fundraising dinner. The limitedticket event was held on the 23 July – in the middle of Town Carnival week – at the Duke of Richmond Hotel.

To complement the events musical theme, guests were entertained throughout the evening by a number of visiting musicians including opera duet ImaginJack, string quartet Classy Cool and quintet Vitae Brass as well as local musician Ashleigh GardenerWheeler.

The Heritage Insurance Institute of Directors’ monthly lunch series continued its infrastructure theme last month with guest speaker, Public Services Department minister, Deputy Paul Luxon. Deputy Luxon looked at Guernsey’s 20-year infrastructure plan. This is in contrast to the States of

Guernsey Capital Prioritisation Plan, which spans a four-year time frame. He focussed on the expected needs and issues over the next two decades for his department. There was particular reference made to the Guernsey Harbours’ 10-year business plan.

Diversity in the boardroom was the hot topic at a recent Women’s Development Forum (WDF) meeting sponsored by EY. The event, hosted by WDF founder Michelle Johansen, attracted more than 60 local businesswomen to the Duke of Richmond Hotel and featured presentations from Lisa Buckingham OBE,

the Institute of Directors’ diversity strategist and Wendy Martin, EY’s Channel Islands Tax Executive Director. The discussions highlighted, among other issues, the need for research at a local level to explore the number of senior women in board positions and how this is developing.

COMPACT CREATURES THAT PACK A PUNCH words | Derrick Mainswiggans

The collective term “The Big Five” was originally used to describe Africa’s five most difficult and dangerous animals to hunt, namely: lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and buffalos (hippos, largely considered the most dangerous African animal, don’t make the cut). But what about “The Little Five”? A term derived from nothing other than my own experiences meandering through the vast African continent. The Little Five is the term I have given to five tiny little creatures that pack a punch much bigger than their size might suggest. In some cases, they are even more deadly than their much larger “Big Five” counterparts. A Hippo complains at not being one of the ‘Big 5’

5. The Camel Spider Strictly speaking, this ugly fella isn’t tiny (compared to the others on this list) – in fact for a spider, he’s quite the monster. But it’s for this reason he makes the list. In truth, the camel spider is not a spider – nor is it a camel. It actually belongs to the same family as spiders and scorpions but is neither. It’s fearsome reputation stems largely from a photo that went viral back in the early noughties (above). The pic shows two particularly large specimens so entangled in either love or war that it looked like the mother of all spiders. The accompanying (largely fabricated) story that went with the photo didn’t help the little fella’s reputation at all. “It can eat camels alive and is super-aggressive”.

flesh. The more you back away, the more they come towards you. They are not poisonous, but their disproportionately large fangs look like they could do some damage. Getting bitten by one of them in the desert, far from medical aid, wasn’t something I wanted to endure. Countless camel spiders popped out from under my groundsheet as I rolled it up in the morning only to meet their untimely end courtesy of my flip-flops. 4. Chigger Mites

From the countless run-ins I had with these little dudes in Morocco, Mauritania, Mali and Sudan I can tell you that they are ugly, they are disconcertingly big and fast, and they are aggressive when disturbed. The idea of them chasing after you is somewhat true but, I’m told that, as desert-dwellers, they want the shade you offer, not your

I had never heard of these guys until long after I had a problem with them. There were several nights when we were travelling through Gabon and with little infrastructure around we made do with whatever we could as a campsite. One particular evening we ended up camping in the graveyard of a long-abandoned church. The grass was very long but the air was too stifling to sleep in our tents so most of us opted to sleep under the stars. The next morning came with little to report but as the day progressed, we started seeing small red welts appearing all over our bodies. Within 48 hours we were

somewhat anxious; covered in head to toe in what could have been mistaken for a measle or meningitis rash. By dusk on the second evening, I was on the brink of insanity as every part of my body itched with an intensity that I have never experienced before. I lost two or three nights’ sleep before the itching finally subsided and as soon as I could get on the internet, I researched what the issue might have been. Known scientifically as Trombiculidae, the microscopic larvae of these pests tend to lay in wait in long grass and attach themselves to the first animal that passes by. Like their relative, the tick, they then feed on your skin, injecting digestive enzymes into you to make their job a bit easier. Intense itching and accompanying scratching often causes secondary infection and if the Internet is to be believed, there have been several cases of suicide due to the insanity-inducing itchiness. It sounds trivial now, but the itching was a true test of my mettle.

Completely unrelated to the similar named mites, the jigger or “chigoe” flea has to be one of my most unpleasant African experiences. I’d not long gotten over my encounter with the chigger mites when I started to feel a nagging, occasionally sharp pain in my foot. I spent most of my time either barefoot or in flip-flops so was used to getting the odd thorn, bit of gravel or even glass in my foot. On this occasion I cleaned my foot, scoured it for any sign of a good splinter but the tweezers remained unused.

I’d learnt about Schistosomiasis in Geography lessons back in school. Often referred to as Bilharzia, Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by a parasitic worm that spends the first part of its life living in water snails before being released into the water where it waits for larger hosts e.g. humans. It usually enters the skin of any bare foot it is exposed to and eventually finds its way into your veins before reaching major organs (lungs, then liver, then kidneys) before settling in your bladder where any eggs then get released back into water via urination and the whole cycle starts again.

Be it South-East Asia, South America or Africa, anybody who’s done the usual backpacker trail will know this little guy. In fact, it’s fair to say, most people will have experienced this incessant pest at one point or another. Even here, in our very own Guerntown, hot summers can often lead to nights jumping around the room, swatting in vain with the nearest newspaper. Apart from the intense itching and that nightmare-inducing hum you often hear when you are about to catch some rest, mosquitos pose a much more sinister threat…

As a major health concern in developing countries, I had done my homework on Schistosomiasis and was very aware of its symptoms…so when I went to relieve myself in white sand dunes of the Sudanese desert, I was somewhat taken aback when my expelled liquid was pure blood. I was only two months from home by this point and, rather than forking out on a dodgy doc in the middle of nowhere, I chose to risk waiting to sort it until I got home. My GP hadn’t seen a case of it in 18 years and the local path-lab could barely contain their excitement when I took in all my “samples”.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) malaria alone was responsible for over 660,000 deaths in 2010 (out of 219 million cases). Despite taking the requisite anti-malarial every time I go to affected areas, I’ve had it twice in all my travels… I can tell you, the mosquito is not to be taken lightly. Use your repellents, take your pills, and cover up!

The pain kept getting worse and I distinctly remember being sat around the fire at a bush camp in Angola and retiring to my tent early armed with headtorch, tweezers, a needle and my trusty Leatherman; determined to carve out the source of my grief. Within minutes, I’d pinpointed the pressure point with the needle and was ready to do some minor surgery. I gave the area another inquisitive prod with the needle and what happened next was straight out of Ridley’s Scott’s Alien: A yellowy white puss-ball wormed it’s way out from the ball of my foot. At first I thought it was a worm, but later learned it was in fact a pea-sized egg-sack filled with hundreds of Chigoe flea eggs left behind by a mother who had been happy to leave her kids alone to feed on my flesh. If left untreated, the inflammatory skin disease they cause (known as “tungiasis”) can cause abscesses, gangrene, loss of limbs and even death. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

Around 700 million people worldwide live in areas where the disease is common. It affects almost 210 million people and an estimated 12,000 to 200,000 people die from it annually. A further 20 million have severe consequences from the disease. Among human parasitic diseases, Schistosomiasis ranks second behind malaria in terms of socio-economic and public health importance in tropical and subtropical areas.

avid Paul Gilliver is a master of COMPACT photography. The Scottish born artist has been honing his skills on our fair island for over a decade and amateurs and professionals respect his body of work globally. Gallery Magazine sat down with David to find out what makes him click… How long have you been practising photography? I was lucky enough to go to a school (The Glasgow Academy) that had a dark room and this allowed me to create a series of black & white photographic prints that eventually helped me gain acceptance to study Fine Art Photography at the Glasgow School of Art (1997-2001). What was the first camera you ever owned? A Pentax P30T was the first camera that

I properly used and I still own my Pentax film camera. I now also own a Canon 550D, 2 x 5D Mark II and a small compact Nikon camera that I take away on holidays! Most important piece of your equipment? For night photography, that would be my Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens. For my macro work, it’s my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens. Do you have a desired item you would love to add to your collection? I am very keen on upgrading my camera soon from the Canon 5D Mark II to the 5D Mark III. How did you get into this/these styles of photography? The American Artist and Photographer David Levinthal inspired me during my years spent studying Fine Art Photography. I studied his work for a couple of years, and I started using miniature figurines in my own art work back in 1998 during my BA (Hons) degree.

I remember being told off by my tutors at Art School for using Star Wars figures in my work (as they felt it hindered any real meaningfulness being derived from the work), so I ended up focusing more on photographing old toys that my Mother used to play with as a child (e.g. an old farmyard set of animals and props that were all made from lead). This is where my fascination with photographing toys began. I think I now own around 400-500 miniature figurines, and my collection is continually expanding! In addition to my macro photography, several years ago I decided to dedicate some time to creating art work within the Guernsey landscape in an attempt to capture this beautiful Island in my own unique style – this is when I became slightly obsessed with long exposure photography which led to my fascination with Light Painting. It was back in 2009 when I spun around my first set of LEDs in the dark and I have been hooked ever since. I teach fairly regular Light Painting Workshops, which are great fun, and it is such a lovely feeling watching others discover this fascinating form of photography. GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, I PLACE THE FIGURES IN SCENARIOS WHERE THEY HAVE A GARGANTUAN TASK TO COMPLETE WHICH SOMETIMES INVOKES A SENSE OF SYMPATHY INSIDE OF ME FOR THEM. I AM A HARD TASKMASTER! What factors are important to you when building your images? Normally I will try to create a scenario that involves an element of humour. It is actually quite tricky to make the scenario feel convincing, and so a lot of thought goes into the placement of the figures and the props, and the nature of the scenario itself. I think by using every-day objects people can relate the images more easily as they already have an air of familiarity to them. Because the figures are only approximately 2 centimetres tall, it is important to keep every scene as compact as possible. What inspires you to create such scenes? The little people fascinate me. I enjoy finding new figures frozen in a particular pose - it almost feels like I have to help them find a task to complete or be involved in, somehow helping them fulfil their purpose. More often than not, I place the figures in scenarios where they have a gargantuan task to complete which sometimes invokes a sense of sympathy inside of me for them. I am a hard taskmaster!

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

I get a lot of enjoyment out of seeing the final shot, especially if I find it particularly amusing and particularly if it was difficult to set up. In your opinion, what is the most essential factor in creating a brilliant image? I think for any image to be considered brilliant, it is going to need to have a pretty significant impact on those who view it. This can be achieved in all sorts of manners and ways I guess, depending on what kind of photography we are talking about. For my macro work, it definitely helps if the scenario being depicted in the photograph resonates somehow with the viewer. The thought process is however completely different when I am out creating my light paintings. They seem to have a wow factor that is entirely different to anything I have ever created before, and the composition is incredibly important, as are the colours. Do you have a favourite image? My favourite image depicting the little people is an image titled Game of Candy Crush anyone? Partly because of the title,

and also because of how colourful it is and the general sense of moment and purpose contained within the image. My favourite Light Painting photograph is Where Rainbows Sleep. I love the colours and the free-flowing movement of the ribbon. As I mentioned previously, I am a huge fan of David Levinthal’s work. I especially love his Wild West photograph, mainly because of the incredible sense of movement he has been able to capture. What advice would you give amateur photographers that are considering embarking on a career in photography? Work hard at achieving your goals and don’t be afraid of making mistakes – mistakes are what will ultimately make you a better photographer. I am not a ‘professional’ photographer as I currently work in Finance during the day. This can be a bit of a juggling act at times, but I have become quite used to how that feels over the past few years. For me, the balance between a desk job and something a lot more creative feels right for now at least.

Do you have any events/shows coming up? I think the most significant thing that has happened for me recently was the release of my E-book on Light Painting. Last year I decided to put some serious hours into writing a book on this subject, as I feel it will help a lot of people out there avoid a lot of the pitfalls and mistakes that I made in my early days of experimenting with Light Painting. I wholeheartedly agree with TWLOHA’s message of hope and recovery, so much so that I wanted to create a body of work that I felt portrayed this message visually. By adding light to darkness (in my Light Painting photography), I feel these images convey a sense of hope and positivity.

Some individuals will associate the night time with negativity as natural light has faded and darkness obscures their outlook. However, my photography reveals at the end of each long exposure, an element of natural light is present proving that it is never truly dark. See, with a little planning and some clever packing, you’re all set to look gorgeous in your holiday snaps.

How would you describe your style? I keep things simple, less is always more. Personally I’m not a fan of bold print or branding so skinny jeans, t-shirts and a leather jacket always have my vote. I like to live by the motto “Look like you’re going somewhere, not like you’ve been somewhere.” You help people look their best, what do you do differently? In an ever changing industry it’s important for me to keep up with current trends. It’s my job as a stylist to inspire people, giving them options and ideas they may not have considered before. A good chat with a client about what they expect, normally guides me in the right direction. What do you enjoy most about your work? Being able to create on a daily basis is an amazing part of my job. The fact that you can take every day inspiration from your surroundings, be it in the salon or outside of it, gives me total satisfaction. What is the most important advice to keep your hair in check? Condition! It’s so important, and so easy to do, a good treatment and homecare regime will keep hair at its best. I always tell clients to treat hair like skin; you wouldn’t go in the sun without sunscreen on so think about your hair more and give it the love it deserves.

What other styles get your attention? There are so many, I use Instagram a lot and follow a fair few stylists. Errol Douglas, who I have had the chance to work with many times, is a huge inspiration to me as well as fashion designer Kristian Aadnevik who designed some of the most beautiful ready to wear dresses I’ve seen. My team also get my admiration as they all produce wonderful work every day. If you could have worked with any person dead or alive, who would it be? Kate Moss, without a doubt! If you had to wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life it would be…. My sheepskin coat

To fit with this month’s compact theme, I set out to find the best value make-up palette with a good selection of products, all in one place. The clear winner was the Balm cosmetics ‘Balm Voyage!’ palette with an impressive 16 colours to choose from, plus 3 versatile lipstick shades. The pigment in the eye shadows is strong for bold colour and the selection has something to suit everyone. A must-have in your make-up bag, suitcase or a great present!

Summer Siren The palette has the perfect collection of gold and bronze shades for a golden smokey eye. Highlight under the eye with the bright yellow to widen and add the darker brown in the lid crease for a sultry depth. Small circular motions with a blending brush will keep the look soft but start with the lighter shades. Finish with a little lip balm.

Mer-magic Inspired by the princess of the sea, blend together the aqua shades with the silver for a look that works both day and night. Add a sharp silver line under the eye but don’t be too neat with the silver in the socket for some ethereal magic.

Wet look Wetting your brush before applying the shadows will give you stronger colours. Do the same with the ‘B3’ brown colour for filling and defining eyebrows. Wear this with the coral ‘first officer’ lipstick for some serious style this summer.

Smokin’ hot For an easy dark smokey eye, sweep the black all over the eyelid, then wet a smaller brush to give an eyeliner effect. Blend in a gold shades into the eyelid crease and the lower inner socket for a seasonal twist. Add the red ‘second officer’ lipstick to really turn up the glam.

Multi-use! Use the lighter shades to highlight the top of the cheekbone and under the eyebrow arch and the matt brown shades to contour the face (remember to really blend) and you’ve got the ultimate holiday palette.

The hardest part is choosing what to cook. We’ve got twenty-five different flavoured sausages (including Marmalade and cheese with baked bean), twelve flavoured burgers, Ribs, Grillsticks, Kebabs and our very special twenty-eight day hung Aberdeen Angus steak burger. It’s gluten free with red onions, chives, sea-salts and cracked black pepper. The texture is completely different and very coarse. It’s a great burger but we’ve sold out…” Of course they have.

S AV I N G S PAC E There can be something very appealing about shedding the years of accumulated stuff and living a more compact home life. Whether you are down-sizing, buying your first home or renting, there is often a need to consider how best to use a smaller space. There are also particular challenges with living in a more compact environment. Over the years Livingroom has accrued a wealth of knowledge about how to make the most out of your home. Founding director Simon Torode imparts some of his wisdom about how to make small beautiful.

Now is the perfect time to consider how we best use our living environment to maximise quality of life. We can take clues from popular culture as to how best to solve space issues. Home magazines and TV programmes have tried to get people to de-clutter for years but that's hard when you don't have the right type of storage. I have recently embraced Pinterest, a free online website where you can be inspired by others then create online scrap books - it's brilliant and bang up to date. Pinterest is a great way to look at other peoples solutions to everyday problems. When living in a compact environment, bespoke fitted storage is key. Whether you are staying in your home, or planning to move on one day, I can guarantee that it will help your sale if others can see well-planned living space. Flexible-use furniture can also provide storage but dedicated built-in storage is the most sensible way to invest in your home. If you take all the storage with you when you leave your home you haven't actually added anything. Staircases carry great untapped potential if designed with a bit of thought. As most houses are plagued with kids’ plastic toys stairs can be a great space to hide them away. Wine lover? An under-stair cellar is another good example of how to personalise your home to suit your requirements. Enjoy a good read? A well planned staircase can also double as a bookcase. Bored of seeing shoes littering the floor? This is an ideal spot to build easily-accessible racks, hidden from view. Rarely used guest bedrooms often make better reception or study space but can still be used for visitors with the inclusion of BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

sofa beds or 'pull-down' beds which can free up floor space for everyday use. The use of light can be subjective - some people prefer cosy darker spaces and others prefer high levels of light. Whatever your preference, there are ways to use light to help create a feeling of space. Reflecting light in surfaces can be an art form. A great tip for an older property is to use both floor-standing and wall mounted mirrors. They can also be positioned to echo lamps on the other side of the room, duplicate a view from a window or enhance character features that make your home unique. In complete contrast, a contemporary home is perfectly suited to lacquered/glazed surfaces and polished floor tiles. Each option can be well-placed to reflect light. Paint can be used to great effect. By keeping your scheme simple for a small room you can create the illusion of space. Avoid dark ceilings and accentuating features. Painted or wallpapered feature walls rarely work but using the same neutral colour for walls, ceiling and woodwork will help. Don't be afraid of using white as you can add colour later in your furnishings and artwork which will allow you to update more freely as and when you fancy a change. Window mounted Roman or roller blinds can also retain the recess during the evening, where curtains can create a visual wall. Bathrooms have seen great evolution over the past few years with corner and wallhung toilets, space-saver baths or showers and clever under-basin storage. You really don't need a great deal of square feet to create an en-suite and I have seen some brilliantly planned solutions in recent years. It is safe to say that everyone loves an en-suite bathroom that you don't have to share with your kids or guests.

Ceiling height is a missed opportunity. For those that have false ceilings with attic voids, expose that space, in particular to create mezzanine levels or raised beds. This idea works brilliantly in childrens bedrooms. You can raise the bed and have great study/social areas underneath which will ensure your child never grows out of their bedroom. Take your storage space into the garden. Guernsey planning laws have seen some changes in recent years which allow for some innovation. A garden shed measuring no more than six square metres in footprint and not exceeding three metres in height, is now exempt from a planning application providing that it is positioned to meet further planning guidelines (although this does not apply to protected buildings). By building a garden room or shed you can clear the attic and still keep your belongings dry and secure. Then your roof space could also open up the possibility of an attic conversion and, yet again, add valuable living space to your property and therefore, add intrinsic value. An average 10x6 garden shed costs around £400. If you consider how much more valuable your attic space could be – it’s a no brainer. It's also good to see what you have been accumulating and nine times out of ten you don't need it! The danger of attic storage is just how much you can hoard. Compact living doesn't mean sacrificing on style or taste. It takes some ingenuity and forward planning but sometimes good things really do come in well planned small spaces.

More and more companies are redesigning their products to make life easier for us consumers. It is more common for both partners to work nowadays and we have less time to clean and care for our homes. Our lives are getting busier and busier, we do not want spend so much time cleaning or to be replacing or updating our bathroom and kitchens quite so often. As a consumer myself, I am looking for timeless design and a quality that will lasts and look good. After 14 years of working for Channel Island Ceramics and having lived and used the products we supply on a daily basis. I can honestly say that those little details in the products we sell make a lot of difference to my housekeeping routine.

love design that is innovative, practical and most importantly looks good. From a designer’s point of view, aesthetics with function is everything. Hansgrohe is an innovative company designing for a broad range of people with a wider assortment of needs. Every little detail in the design is determined by the way the customer uses Hansgrohe’s products and it is of the upmost important to them to understand their customer’s needs. As an example of their innovative design includes a coating of silver in their shower hoses to inhibit the production of bacteria and mould in the water. ALAN TURING HONOURED BY C5

C5 Alliance, Guernsey, hosted a ceremony on 25 June to officially rename its headquarters. The former Itex House is now known as Turing House. The new name was chosen in honour and recognition of Alan Turing – the individual cited as the father of modern computer science – whose code breaking skills helped crack the famous enigma cipher, shortening World War II significantly.

At the beginning of July, family owned and run Le Mont Saint Garage unveiled its larger, totally refurbished premises following eight months of building work, which have resulted in an improved Sales display area and expanded Service Department. The expansion was driven by the need to increase capacity in both departments, and the facilities on offer. Following the work, the Service Department can accommodate four cars at any one time which will help to speed up the already smooth running process, and the Showroom now has an improved and larger floor area, and boasts better seating, a TV for clients to watch if they are waiting, plus new toilets. The facilities are shared by the two departments.

The choice of domicile for ILS transactions was among the hot topics discussed by leading industry players at a Guernsey Finance-hosted thought leadership event in the reinsurance centre of Zurich on Wednesday. The event attracted 80 delegates from around the world, including Japan, Hong Kong, France, the UK and Switzerland and from across the asset management, wealth management and reinsurance and adviser communities.

THE Channel Islands Co-operative Society will be donating thousands of pounds to environmental projects across the Channel Islands again this year. The EcoFund was launched in 2008 when the Society led the way in recycling, by levying a 5p charge on one-trip carrier bags in an attempt to reduce the number used. In the first year alone bag consumption was cut by an astonishing 90%. The ongoing funds raised each year since from bag sales are distributed on an annual basis to worthy environmental initiatives. The Society’s Chief Commercial Officer, Jim Plumley, said as a major local employer The Channel Islands Co-operative Society was dedicated to the communities in which it operates. The fund is now in its 7th year and since its inception The Channel Islands Co-operative Society has paid out over £280,000 to assist environmental causes in the islands.

Having won numerous Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and industry awards in recent years for campaigns for such clients as Jersey Heritage and Longueville Manor, Mr Clarke is widely considered to be the most talented Creative Director in the Channel Islands with vast creative and digital expertise. “Ben is unique in the Channel Islands when it comes to his position, expertise and experience. His career has seen him working at a leading London branding agency, across some of the Channel Islands’ leading creative agencies, to most recently developing advanced website, app and digital marketing campaigns,” said Mr Grange. In fact Oi believes he is the only Creative Director in the Channel Islands who can develop an integrated advertising campaign and build an advanced web application from start to finish!

Mr Grange said Mr Clarke’s traditional advertising knowledge and in-depth digital expertise is exactly what he was looking for in finding the suitable person to drive Oi’s creative and digital output forward. “Lots of agencies talk about integration and digital, but they don’t really get it or have the

experience from the top down. We’re about getting on with it - and have a proven track-record of developing, implementing, evaluating and evolving integrated marketing campaigns locally, nationally and internationally,” added Mr Grange. After graduating from The Arts Institute in Bournemouth with a degree in Graphic Design and Typography, Mr Clarke moved to London where he worked on projects for Film4 and The British Library before returning to his homeland Jersey. There he spent six years working for leading Channel Island agencies before setting up Arcade Creative in 2010. Arcade won an impressive eight awards at the Jersey CIM Awards between 2010 and 2013, as well as being internationally recognised by ‘The Web Designer’s Idea Book’ for clean, functional web design. “It’s great to be joining Oi and working with some good friends and very talented people,” said Mr Clarke. “I admire what Oi have achieved, the work they do, clients they work for, and their progressive attitude. One of the greatest challenges facing any manager lies in recruiting the right people to play in your team. Sports is a fantastic (and in no way over-used) business metaphor, because running a successful organisation demands the exact same qualities necessary to lead a team to World Cup glory - you need to make sure nobody is caught biting people, taking bribes or bulldozing shanty towns if you don’t want to end up leaving the competition early or being beaten by the Germans.

You might think I’m taking the football metaphor a bit far, but you’d be wrong. Although I prefer to play golf myself, without doubt I am the Alex Ferguson of the motivational business speech, and anyone who disagrees is David Beckham crying because he got hit in the face with a flying boot. Yes, there may have been a few times when I’ve needed to “persuade” the ref after a particularly dirty tackle, but if you take some advice from me, you can assemble your own dream team and I promise you’ll be bringing home the silverware in no time.

reward your star players… To steer a team through the knockout phase and into the final you need to pick the top talent, keep them happy and motivate them to follow your attacking formation at all times. Never underestimate the importance of climbing the corporate league table, either for yourself or for those star players (executives) who are the backbone of your squad. Treat boardroom recruits like floating prospects on the international transfer market - bring them on quickly, give them a new Ferrari and set up their wages so they pay less tax than the people who hoover the staff canteen. If they stop scoring, just use all the cash you made from replica strips to bring in a replacement before they break a leg and you pension them off to a league that only plays on Sundays.

… but keep everybody else hungry In my father’s day, people used to believe that a job was for life, like a puppy or herpes simplex. In the 21st century things are very different, and not only because people like my father fired most of their employees and replaced them with Bangladeshi call-centre workers who are lucky if their contracts are as high as zero hours. No, today we profit from what I tell our HR people to describe as “a dynamic and flexible workforce”. You wouldn’t expect to pay Gary Lineker or George Best the big money to be kicking balls around at their age, so I don’t know why you’d expect a corporation to do the same thing when we can hire a graduate at half your salary. Aside from my star executives, my team wins trophies thanks to the little people who work extremely hard because we’ve just employed them and they’re still on their probation period, or because they got into the pension plan and don’t want to have their job out sourced to our offices in Dhaka.

don’t confuse the team with the manager I’m fond of telling staff that there’s no I in TEAM, but I always follow up by reminding them that’s there’s no U in BOSS. I always get a good laugh from that one, but I’m making a serious point here - everybody should know their place in the organisation, especially if that place is below director level and therefore disposable. knowing that you will reward top scorers, but will happily transfer the sick and the lame to the corporate equivalent of Grimsby FC, really motivates your players to stay on the field. Making sure everybody is incentivised to give 110% (24/7) keeps our organisation running at maximum efficiency, give or take the occasional red card (nervous breakdown and/or sexual harassment lawsuit). Whatever happens I’m always there, stood at the sideline, wearing a sheepskin coat and swearing at you. There’s a reason they got me that “Boss of the year” mug, and it’s not just because I made my secretary drop a lot of hints before I signed off on any bonus payments.

I’m not one to blow my own vuvuzela, but I didn’t end up in the Director’s Box by scoring own goals. I keep the pressure on my opponent at all times, and only hire people who can do the same. To be a business success you need to be bold and confident, a risk taker who still knows when to fall into formation and shred incriminating documents before the police turn up. This is hard to identify at the selection stage, which is why I pursue an exclusive policy of only employing males who went to the same school as me. The only exception is when I pick up a CV and find that somebody is confident enough to describe themselves as a “rock star” or a “ninja”. Who wouldn’t want to hire a compliance ninja, or an accounts receivable rock star? It doesn’t just mean you’re great at your job, it means you understand that business wisdom can only be communicated by either made-up anecdotes, obtuse buzzwords or an inappropriate metaphor that makes your job sound far more important than it really is.

In business, like in football, there is no second place. Ask yourself why you’re reading this. Maybe you’re a middle manager and need to up your game. Perhaps you’re on a probation period yourself, and you think you’ve got what it takes to scale the greasy pole and receive your own boss mug one day. I admire ambition (unless you work for me), and am happy to steer you in the direction of success (at another company, of course). The secret is to focus on where you want to be, and who you need to defeat in order to get there. Think of the “boss of the year“ mug like the World Cup, or perhaps the golden goblet in that Indiana Jones film with the Nazis - hidden and dangerous, but with the power to make Sean Connery recover from being shot. In either case, the winner gets the glory and the loser gets a dangerous box that melts people’s faces if you open it at the wrong time - by which I mean the executive toilet after an especially tense penalty shoot out. GOOALLLLLLL!

bend the rules, distract the ref

We all know that regulations and laws are there for a reason, but it’s equally true that it’s not a fair game if only one team is prepared to follow the rules. If you know your opponent is willing to take a dive, then the best way to keep the upper hand is to make sure somebody is always in position to put the boot in when he goes down, preferably crushing a few sensitive bits when they do it. Always try and have a distraction on hand to make the ref look the other way (i.e. a team of lawyers), and when you know the opposition will try to do the same there’s nothing wrong with taking care of any potential disagreements before it even gets to that stage. A little corporate hospitality will always lead to favourable decisions, as all those footballing fanatics in the boozefree, underpopulated desert of Qatar will happily tell you during the next World Cup.

CICRA AWARDS SECOND BURSARY TO LOCAL STUDENT Ladies’ College A-level student, Christina Hodgson, has been awarded a bursary by the Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities (CICRA). This is the second bursary awarded by CICRA to Guernsey students with the aim to build up a level of competition law and utility regulatory knowledge in the islands. Miss Hodgson hopes to read Law at the University of Dundee this coming Autumn. Interim chief executive of CICRA, Michael Byrne, said; “Christina’s application was extremely impressive. It’s encouraging to see all the work experience she has undertaken in order to further her career in law.

mmediate praise to Porsche for creating something a lot easier on the eye, drifting away from the traditional Boxster look; presenting consumers with beautifully refined styling internally and externally. A dedicated shift in design aesthetic allied with updated engineering makes this car a desirable, trackready indulgence.

It has a tail! Unlike previous Porsche Boxster styling this car is equally slick from the front, rear and side, with sharp aero-grooving and pronounced rear detailing that shows off the powerful hind legs of the newest Boxster S. The car keeps its heaviest components in its well-defined midsection; ensuring weight distribution is evened out. There has been an overall weight loss and this reduction, combined with tweaks to its transmission and suspension guarantee a sufficiently exhilarating drive. The 3.4L engine throws out a whopping 315 bhp and can achieve 0-60 in approximately 5 seconds. It’s not a 200mph+ supercar but it is very fast with a surprising movement and responsiveness on the road even with its 265 LBS of torque. It sticks to the road like glue.

Speed track references aside, this machine could get you to the Bridge and back casually, quickly or downright dangerously. Not that we’d recommend the latter, obviously.

There has been a dramatic increase in the level of drive comfort. The convertible model has had stability issues in the past, but the rigid framing and improvements to the integrated traction control and suspension, remove all bounce and shudder from the drive. The roof can be lowered and raised at speeds of up to 30mph (perfect for the island) and a smooth yet powerful ride is achieved on the bumpiest of Guernsey roads. It has sublime responsiveness in its most exciting of drive settings. The option to switch the car into Sports Plus mode, tunes the engine to switch gears as late as possible. Slight interference from human fingers is promoted in this drive mode as the pitch of the Boxster S exhaust is incredibly loud even at the 25mph speed limit. Most likely to be engaged whilst driving along the front of St Peter Port in order to ensure maximum attention and head-turning from pedestrians. Its relatively low weight (1350kilos light) also translates into a mild difference with your fuel economics depending on how you drive it. The standard drive system (and by far the most efficient) lazily switches gears but expect the fuel gauge to drop dramatically as you cycle through Sports and Sports Plus modes; the latter of which keeps you in first gear up to 35 mph before switching to second. Unfortunately there was nowhere safe for me to test the vehicles 172mph top speed. But those willing to take the Porsche to a track day or even a local sprint can push this high performance car to its limits. The Porsche also caters for those of us who prefer a slower, more relaxed drive. Although gloriously powerful, the storage capacity in this compact sports car must be mentioned. Don’t expect enough room for all the shopping and the baby seat, but do expect enough

for ample baggage and sports gear. What they’ve created in free space in both the front and rear boot areas contribute to the overall performance and handling of the car, carving out respectable portions for your driving consumption and day-to-day use. Maximising space in the cockpit with hidden storage compartments also benefits the daily driver. The steering wheel is devoid of the usual array of buttons that most lux-sport cars come with as standard. A nifty LED display either side of the centre section does highlight which sport mode the driver has selected – an unnecessary inclusion as the speed and sound of the vehicle is enough to highlight the driving mode that has been selected. Satellite navigation can be viewed on multiple cockpit screens and with a flick of a switch (mounted to the side of the steering column) various information can be replaced for your viewing pleasure. Car diagnostics and media systems can all be displayed and interacted with from the centre console at any time. There is a range of internal design packages to choose from which can be chosen online from start to finish. Porsche will literally create the desired vehicle to your specifications; but expect the price to increase dramatically with each add-on. Overall, the 2014 Porsche Boxster S is a brilliant compact sports car with lashings of style and flair. It’s immensely fun to drive and at £50,000 on the road, a bargain compared to its Porsche 911 brethren. This month I’ll be delving into the weird and wonderful world of compact gadgets. From the beautifully formed through to the thoroughly ridiculous, there will almost certainly be something here that grabs your attention.

tempted to buy one myself if it wasn’t for that ridiculous name. What does it even mean? A prime case of product marketing gone mad.

The beauty of this device is its simplicity and its potential applications reach far beyond your living room. For example you could take it to work and watch movies in the boardroom (if there aren’t any meetings going on course). Alternatively you could plug it into the back of one of the big screens at a One Direction concert and stream live footage of the House of Commons to the crowd. This would certainly be more entertaining than watching the band scamper about the stage bleating into their microphones.

The Nest Thermostat has had a lot of publicity recently, mainly due to it becoming part of the sprawling Google Empire. It is a fantastic piece of modern technology, designed to help you reduce your heating bills. To start with it looks beautiful; a huge departure from the lifeless, beige thermostats that you normally see tucked behind the kitchen door. If you had this device in your house you would want it to take centre stage so that you can impress your guests when they come round for dinner.

Google’s Chromecast is a tiny device that plugs straight into the HDMI port on the back of your TV. From there all you need to do is install an app and you will be able to stream all of your favourite online shows, movie, music and more straight to your TV from your smartphone, tablet or laptop.

Even if you’re not into technology the chances are you have heard of the amazing mini-computer, the Raspberry Pi. The size of a credit card, it is a fully functional, Linux based computer that can be (and has been) used for a huge array of applications from weather balloons through to hamster cams. The most interesting and noble of these applications is in education. Due to the low price of the device schools all over the globe have embraced it in an attempt to get more kids into software development. I have owned one for a couple of years now. In true, excited nerd fashion I purchased one, booted it up once and proceeded to never use it again. One day I’ll use it to take over the world.

Secondly its functionality is pure genius; Nest actually programs itself by learning your behaviour patterns and desired temperatures for certain days and times during the week. It then builds a schedule for your heating, air conditioning and even your dehumidifier if you have one.

This wearable camera will help you to become a ‘life blogger’ i.e. someone who feels the need to document and share every movement of their life. It takes a 5MP photo every 30 seconds, can hold up to 6000 photos and will last for a good couple of days before needing to be recharged. Take it to orgies, festivals, Ayahuasca gettogethers or childrens’ birthday parties and share your experiences with your friends and family. A brilliant piece of creative technology, I believe this is the start of something massive. With the looming release of technologies such as Google Glass, life blogging is going to become a huge phenomenon. It will however be inevitably hit with all of the usual privacy related moans and groans, but if we can get over these it will be one of the defining technologies of the decade.

How long does it take to get from Russia to Guernsey? Well, it takes the Galaxy S5 Mini a little over a month, which to my mind is too long. I like Russia. Good clubs. Vodka. But also that was where Samsung started their international rollout of the new Galaxy S5 Mini. That was the start of July, and it’s only arriving in Guernsey now. In August - too long for something so hot. Okay, so I haven’t actually picked one up, but I’ve been reading and – being a techie – as soon as I get the call I’ll be around to AirtelVodafone to have a look. It looks like a smaller version of its bigger sibling, and even has the S5’s sensors (think fingerprint scanner, heart rate monitor etc). That fingerprint scanner is PayPal certified, which means this could be the start of paying literally at the touch of a button, which is very exciting. While there are fewer specs compared to the S5, there are some very exciting bits that it has: as well as being waterresistant for up to one metre and 30 minutes (which is important), the S5 Mini’s camera has got built-in geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR and panorama. Also, being smaller makes it handier on the go. I will be waiting for AirtelVodafone to let me know it’s here – until then, what’s the Russian for hurry up?

he 2014 racing season has proven to be one of the most successful to date for the Guernsey Powerboat Association. Not only have a number of the club’s experienced racers invested in craft capable of competing in the locally hosted 3A & 3B UIM World Championships in September, but also the club has warmly welcomed various new racers to the fleet, at whatever level they wish to compete.

Newcomers, Gareth Keast and navigator Sue Cosgrave have made a brave move by starting to race with the least horsepower on the circuit in their Yamaha 90 Blue Print motor powering a lightweight Backdraft 22. The newcomers have provided fierce competition for their fellow ‘A/B’ Class racers, who have more power at their disposal. In the more powerful ‘C’ Class, Arctech

Racing (another Backdraft 22 but this time powered by a Mercury 200XS) is crewed by Niall Bougourd and Ivan Lancaster and they have proven themselves as ones to watch. Even whilst the team familiarised themselves with the new combination, they kept a number of their experienced colleagues on their toes for the first few races upon their debut this year. In the same class, two Phantoms have also made an appearance; firstly, Hollie Woodhouse and navigator Bill Gladstone have worked tirelessly to prepare a Mercury XR2 powered Phantom 21, giving them sufficient time to test various props whilst gaining valuable experience. Secondly, Richard Le Feuvre and UK based navigator Barry Culver have made quite an entrance in their limited edition Mercury striped Phantom 20, again propelled by XR2 power. These latest arrivals have made for some highly competitive racing in this class, with regulars to the circuit such as Nosferatu, The Boat With No Name, RG Racing and Stonetech Racing, all fighting to secure the chequered flag.

Having raced consistently for a number of years in their Phantom 25 until this season, the club were pleased to welcome back Martyn Roberts and navigator Tim Abbott. The highly experienced pair has bought another V24 boat to the island (V-3 It Wasn’t Us), now racing in ‘DV’ Class against the formidable Dave Corbet and Kerry Le Patourel. With almost identical boats racing against one another, their success could depend solely on the ability of the crews to gain a competitive edge. The action in the Guernsey Championship continues on the weekend of 2nd & 3rd August. Having competed internationally in 2013, Corbet and Le Patourel will again be representing Guernsey in V-8 Diablo Racing when fighting it out in Sweden at the European V24 Championships. Having gained so much experience in Guernsey’s often unpredictable weather conditions, the pair has a good chance of lifting the trophy. It is safe to say that all crews are excited about the return of the UIM 3A & 3B World Championships later this year between the 9th – 14th September, to the extent that a substantial number of locals have either GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

adapted their existing boats, or bought completely new rigs to enable them to compete in the prestigious event. As things stand, it is estimated that as many as six or seven local racers will be on the start line. This includes the 2011 champion, John Richardson who is back and prepared to fight to regain the title, along with his new navigator for this season, Scott Hicks. As for John’s previous navigator, Tom Sauvarin, a very exciting development is taking place for him and Diogo De Freitas, with the imminent launch of a brand new Guernsey designed boat for Class 3 racing. Developed by the Sauvarins themselves, the design of this boat includes many specialised racing features aided by numerous years of powerboat racing experience. With such a fine pedigree, this boat is expected to be at the forefront of powerboat design for this class of racing. Other locals expected to do well, also adopting Evinrude 115HO power, will

be Paul Etasse and Chris Stonebridge in their Bernico F2 Extreme, along with Jacques and Pierre Vermeulen in a similar, but slightly smaller Bernico F3. Olly Duquemin and Clint Roberts will be racing their Phantom 19XL, whilst Frank Le Tissier and Callum James will be using the same variety of motor to power their Ocke Mannerfelt B-19, which has only recently made its debut locally. Competitors from a number of locations from around the world will be racing in the World Championships. With various boats of different shapes and sizes being prepared, the club should see a highly interesting line-up come September. With the majority of racers opting for either Evinrude 115HO or Mercury Pro XS 115 motors like our locals, the competition couldn’t be more fierce, making driver training and practice often the only determinant of success. With the satisfaction of racers, spectators and

volunteers in mind, the courses will be geared in a manner that enables testing, yet safe racing for all competitors. Taking full advantage of some of Guernsey’s most iconic landmarks, whilst maintaining a large proportion of inshore stretches to keep spectators and safety officials in the heart of the action, will make this seasons racing easily accessible to the viewing public. The continued success of Guernsey Powerboat racing depends on a great deal of planning and organisation for which great thanks must go to the army of dedicated volunteers, helpers and guard-boat crews, in particular, the professionalism and commitment of the GPA’s President and his team of race officials. From the eclectic echoes of Ellie Goulding to the bohemian beats of the Bombay Bicycle Club, this year’s Jersey Live promises an enviable roster of first-rate talent. It’s the atmosphere and vibrant, receptive crowd that makes Jersey Live an unmissable experience. Standing as the Channel Islands’ biggest live music event to date (often a sell out, with 20,000 attending over the festival weekend) needless to say, numerous individuals are involved in making the entire affair a triumphant one. Far from festival elves waving their supernatural tools, whizzing and zapping this 2-day music, dance and DJ celebration together (which we’d all like to believe) – a huge amount of time and effort goes into Jersey Live’ intricate creation. From the Artist Liaison Team, who work comprehensively alongside a team of

dedicated assistants in the three months running up to the event (collating artists, ensuring talent requirements and coordinating and maintaining the wellbeing of all areas) to the UK and Local Security Teams (who warrant the smooth management of crowd control and local licensing issues) it’s difficult to pinpoint one particular person that makes Jersey Live a success. This year’s event promises a diverse and eclectic mix of talent, showcasing the likes of 2014’s BRIT Award winning (Best British Female) Ellie Goulding, who will headline the Main Stage on Saturday Night performing a series of eclectic melodies – to double BRIT Award winner Ben Howard (one of Britain’s biggest music talents to date) who will arrive surfing a wave of momentum onto Sunday’s Main Stage – variety is key here and there’s something to suit all. Other acts on the horizon include the London-based four-piece ‘the Bombay Bicycle Club’ and the velvet-voiced ‘John Newman’.

Of course, with talent comes the organisation of the visiting transfers, comprising time scaling and scheduling down to the very last minute – ensuring pick-ups and drop-offs run smoothly. Being on site at the right time and on the right stage is imperative – especially when crowds of expectant fans are awaiting a specific performance to begin. Getting the artists off site – through the throng of devoted admirers – is another story! Especially when you’re dealing with an act as large as London-based collective and acclaimed dance troupe Diversity. The event organisers also use the services of a UK Events Management Team. It’s the Event Controller’s job to liaise with all blue light services, ensuring the safety of the entire event. Luckily for Jersey Live, Glastonbury’s Festival Security Director is on hand to keep an eye on the likes of this year’s must-visit Full Flow Tent, which will be showcasing the best of current local DJ’s and of course, 2014’s Silent Disco, which will take place in another of the festival’s pop-up venues.

Site Managers arrive eight days prior to the festival kick off date, working alongside both UK and local teams to safeguard the secure set-up of the site and also, to guarantee it goes up on time! This year’s Par 4 area will feature an interactive installation comprising a trapeze artist, a fairground and various food and drink stalls. And the list goes on, proving that Jersey Live would be by no means possible without a team of amazing individuals. From the UK Press Liaison Manager (there to coordinate on site interviews, photo opportunities and post event content) to the Area Stage Manager (who certifies the appearances of all weird and wonderful acts taking place at this year’s exiting event) through to the Event Directors (the all rounder’s) – who work throughout the year up until the delivery date – planning the fundamentals from start to finish. ‘Everyone, all across the board, plays an important part in delivering the best event we can in a safe and harmonious way.
