We love to know our readers hang on to previous copies but when you move or find that they’re taking up too much space, drop them down to the recycling bins in the car park off the Esplanade. If you want to find out more about recycling, call 01534 448586. We put this on the green strip to look eco innit... That’s smart!

hen the millionaires and billionaires show off their latest purchases on Instagram or Twitter, how do we ensure that madness doesn’t ensue? Either plain jealousy or the stark reality that we’ll probably never be able to live the same lifestyle, unless vicariously through the drip fed digital evidence that pops up in our news feeds on an hourly basis. When it comes down to it, what do we really value and how do we put price tags on the most extravagant items of desire? Environment and circumstance dictates behaviour and many of you will be experiencing changes in your lives that will affect the way you “spend” Christmas this year. Some of you might be saving for a house or a new car in 2015 so budgets are strict; others may have had that pay rise you’ve been working hard for all year so it’ll be big gifts all round. Some of you may be cutting down on spending due to employment constraints or even loss of business. But the common factor we share is that we can work through all of these things in the safety and prosperous environment of our gorgeous Guernsey. However you choose to spend Christmas this year, ensure that it’s done with the important people in your lives, which doesn’t cost you one single penny.

TRAVEL
WORDS Grace Ryan, material girl ILLUSTRATION Hermione Benest
Once upon a time, Guernsey had an economy that remained afloat on a combination of tomato exports and beach holidays for British families who thought an exotic destination was one that involved getting on a boat. Our people weren’t wealthy, but we were happy with what we had – bean jar, a functional German vocabulary and skin cancer. Our Cinderella story came in the form of the finance industry, which transformed our humble Island virtually overnight into a glittering pumpkin of high society parties and ostentatious wealth. I’ve heard it said that it resembles something from The Great Gatsby, but I’ve had a permanent champagne hangover since 1986 so haven’t had a chance to get much reading done beyond back issues of Tatler. What I do know is that Guernsey’s realm of beautiful people can be a difficult place to live if you lack the means to provide yourself with the kind of lifestyle you know you deserve.
Tip #1: get a job, but not a real job
I’m ashamed to reveal that my parents were upper-middle class at best – if I hadn’t disowned them at 16 years old there was a chance I might have had to work for a living. Instead, to fulfil my dreams of becoming a society princess, I was forced to marry into money two or three times, but unfortunately girls and boys these days will discover that a good sugar daddy can be hard to find. A combination of watertight
Work? Shocking, I know. But before you recoil in horror, understand that I don’t mean anything as demeaning as doing any actual labour. It is important to remember that wealth is mostly about appearances, so the last thing you want to do is give the impression of actually needing to earn money for yourself. Your task is to create a convincing outward impression of success, so at best you should get a job that mostly involves looking glamorous and meeting wealthy people, like charity fundraiser or botox clinic receptionist. The graft element manifests itself whilst constructing an elaborate lifestyle for yourself that you can still afford (perhaps with the help of a credit card) but that will convince those wealthy people that you deserve to spend time in their radiant presence. A nice little job is a win-win, even if you don’t work your way into a billionaire’s hot tub. At the very least, you’ll have money to pay credit card interest and will fool other less-rich people into thinking you’re just a tiny bit above them, which is better than nothing.
10
prenuptial agreements and more efficient heart medicine has dramatically reduced your chances of becoming a merry widow in your late twenties. I have a shocking message for today’s aspiring gold diggers: If you want to squeeze your way into high society you’re going to need to do a bit more than wander around Beaucette Marina in Manolos and a miniskirt.
Tip #2: appearances are deceptive, darling
As I’ve said, wealth is mostly about surface detail. Rich people may appear to be very good at not noticing poor people, but in reality they are finely attuned to signals that might indicate you can’t afford to buy a round of drinks at Red. To stand a hope of blending in, you must camouflage yourself like sci-fi jungle hunter, The Predator. But tailor the look so it would appear that The Predator had an account card at Harrods. I wouldn’t actually waste money on real luxury clothes, as the same sweatshops that make them usually do a pretty nifty line of bootlegs available to anybody who knows how to surf the Internet in Chinese. A wiser investment in your future would involve a few hundred quid’s worth of costume jewellery, a wardrobe full of knock-off Chanel and so much plastic surgery and fake hair that you’re a fire hazard under strong lights.

“The upper classes have their own special form of scruffy, and are surprisingly adept at telling the difference between somebody who has dreadlocks because they’re taking a gap yah in India and somebody who only has them because they sell blankets at the Glastonbury festival” Tip #3: only high society can get away with slumming it
Never, ever think that you can get away with looking rough at the edges, even if you’ve spotted countless posh people who look like they haven’t bothered with nice clothes, a Mulberry handbag or even underarm deodorant. The upper classes have their own special form of scruffy, and are surprisingly adept at telling the difference between somebody who has dreadlocks because they’re taking a “gap yah” in India and somebody who only has them because they sell blankets at the Glastonbury festival. There are also rich people who are filthy simply because they are so rich that nobody dares tell them they smell like a wet Labrador. You could try and pull this off but you’ll need a mucky Land Rover, the ability to shout aggressively at random staff and celebrate (rather unashamedly) that you share the exact same political opinions of Prince Philip. A good place to start is to talk about poor people as if they are all lazy, dirty, work-shy parasites. The botox should help you keep a straight face.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
Tip #4: lifestyles of the poor and infamous
As wealth is about appearances, a fauxluxury lifestyle is about accessories. It’s tough to fake yachting around the Caribbean, but if you can blag hirepurchase on a nice car you can quite easily swan around Guernsey like you’re suffering through the downtime between Ascot and a Nepalese yoga retreat. Get a normal dog, shave its hair in a weird pattern and tell people it’s an expensive pedigree hybrid. For foodie credibility you can steal pictures of luxury meals from the internet and repost them on your Instagram account - if anybody challenges you when they spot you buying supermarket own brands just roll your eyes and report them for shoplifting as soon as they’re in the vegetable aisle. If you get questioned by a genuine rich person at any point in this campaign of deception, mutter something about a stoppage on your trust fund or a hold up in probate whilst some ghastly auntie with a nickname like ‘Toggy’, ‘Bimpy’ or ‘Elizabeth Bathory’ contests Grandfather’s will. As genuine rich people often have zero idea how money works they will probably believe you, and may even invite you to live in the pool house until you can afford a pool and/or house of your own.
Tip #5: the past is another country
The single most important thing to remember when penetrating high society is that you will need to be lubricated with a convincing backstory. Unlike Americans, most wealthy Europeans will not be impressed to hear that you climbed your way up from nothing. Feudalism has technically vanished but nonetheless, people who inherited massive wealth still subconsciously believe that they are a separate species, favoured by God, genetics or a combination of both. You need to have been born into it, or at least in the same hospital, so if you can’t muster any good anecdotes about boarding school you will need to invent a Dickensian tale of woe that sees you forced by cruel fate to squander your birthright and mingle with commoners. This will necessitate your new wealthy pals from never having to meet your family, co -workers or anybody who remembers you from nursery. I would advise that cover can be maintained by the aforementioned plastic surgery and perhaps a new name, but as with all these tips the most important part of living a lie is that you must first come to believe it yourself. Dump your friends and family; get a second credit card and a new passport with your post-surgery face. I’ll see you in the champagne lounge, but you’ll be picking up the bill, dahling.

JERSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE
Over the last couple of years the global economy has had so many ups and downs that the only secure investments have been in companies who produce doomy graphs and with whoever copyrighted the phrase “green shoots of recovery”. One minute your bungalow in St John is worth eight million pounds and you can plan to retire at 50, then suddenly you find your pension fund has invested in Virgin Galactic, your house is on top of a fracking operation and that you will probably need to spend your 70s working on a phone sex hotline. Even properly rich people are’t immune - their investment portfolios are tied up in so many complicated foreign structures that Vladimir Putin only has to frown and open an atlas to potentially wipe billions off their savings. As a result, it’s now very difficult to know whether you even count as wealthy or not. On a global scale, you could quite easily determine this by looking in the fridge (if you’ve got a fridge, food and electricity you’re doing better than most humans) but
sometimes it’s far more important to know how you compare to your immediate neighbours. We all want to keep up with the Joneses (or increasingly the Wangs and Popovs), so why not save a little money and skip visiting your financial advisor this month? Instead of checking the value of your investments, you can take our rigorous quiz to determine whether you’re wealthy enough to be in with the “haves”, the “have nots” or the “have yachts”.
1. Which one of these best describes what you do for a living?
3. Which statement best describes your usual mode of transport?
6. Which of these best describes the last holiday you took?
A: I work for somebody else, but I’ve never met them B: I work for somebody else, and I occasionally make eye contact with them in the stairwell before looking at my shoes C: I work for somebody else, but we play golf together once a month and he’s the godparent to my eldest child D: I think a lot of people work for me, but I employ somebody else to keep track of that kind of thing because people who have to work for a living make me uncomfortable. They remind me of ants.
A: I catch the bus, because we’re using the bicycle in our living room to generate electricity for heating B: I have a car, and only have to catch the bus when part of it falls off C: I own a four wheel drive that uses the same amount of fuel as a bus D: My Airbus ACJ380
A: I was signed off work sick, but fell asleep on the bus home from the GP and ended up in sunny St Peter B: I took the family to an all-in on the Costa Del Sol, nobody got salmonella this time C: Not counting any weekend city breaks, diving the barrier reef again was nice enough D: I took a holiday from sunbathing in a pool of caviar to answer these questions
2. Which one of these best describes your home? A: It’s got four walls and is ever so slightly warmer than being outside B: It’s got four bedrooms, but technically the bank owns three of them C: It’s got four wetrooms and a sauna D: The one I’m in today has a fourteen hole gold course, a private runway and a four storey wine cellar
4. Which statement best describes the times you take your partner out for a nice meal? A: Anywhere that does 2-for-1 coupons, has a ball pit for the children and doesn’t charge for still water B: A local bistro with a reasonably priced house wine C: Somewhere that has at least one Michelin star and requires three waiters just to set out the cutlery D: Secure, discreet, bodyguard-friendly. The possibility of eating another giant panda
5. What kind of gift would you get your child for her eighteenth birthday? A: a card congratulating her for working the night shift for the last three years B: an iPad to take to university C: a horsebox to take on holiday D: her own spot on the Sunday Times rich list
If you picked mostly As: You are pure of heart and rich in spirit, but unfortunately spirit is not an acceptable means of securing credit for a bank loan. On the bright side, you picked up a free copy of this magazine. When you’re done reading it for the second time the lovely thick paper can be used to temporarily repair a hole in your roof. If you picked mostly Bs: You are rich compared to most people
in the world, but are probably slightly horrified at the number of people you meet daily who picked Cs. Rest assured that they probably have secret emotional problems that cannot be helped by frequent skiing holidays and parties. Invest wisely, keep working and tell yourself they are just pretending to have fun.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
7. What do you consider a good investment? A: Scratchcards B: Premium bonds C: Gold bullion D: The oilfields, seaport and elections of a former Soviet republic
8. Do you ever actually meet any poor people? A: I know there are people poorer than me, but I can’t afford to leave Jersey and meet any of them B: I think so, but I don’t like to ask in case we’re both just in the reduced section of Iceland by pure chance C: Yes, there is a family at my child’s school who are only there on a scholarship. We thought about inviting them to play tennis once D: Anybody who says I’ve eaten any poor people will be hearing from my lawyers
If you picked mostly Cs: Congratulations, you’re rich. You aren’t rapper rich or Bill Gates rich, but you can definitely afford to fly to Geneva and get another facelift. You might even have to work for a living. If you picked mostly Ds: You’re extremely rich in every
conceivable way, but in the time you took to do this quiz an urchin has made off with your wallet.

Combine oodles of technology with lots of luxury and you have the Mercedes Benz S350 Bluetec. A new edition to the extravagant car market, it’s a frontrunner for those on the hunt for a seamlessly, effortless drive. MERCEDES BENZ S350 BLUETEC £62,650, 0-62MPH 6.8SECONDS

As always, the Bentley is boss and is guaranteed to make you king of the road. Who cares if it has a piggy nose? It’s so high on the list; we mentioned it twice.
Although the 640D Gran Coupe lacks credentials in this audience on paper, once behind the wheel, it’s an entirely different story. A flagship of engineering.

RESTAURANTS
When reservations disappear within minutes of being released and culinary connoisseurs somehow manage to persuade diners to part with oodles of hard earned cash for the likes of a fermented grasshopper…
Something Different
A Family Affair
Located in an old whaling warehouse, this restaurant relies solely on ingredients sourced from the land; it’s also the birthplace of ‘New Nordic’ cuisine. From foraged sea buckthorn to reindeer lichen, to dinner consisting of none other than a whole kohlrabi, crammed with fermented juice and bored with a straw. Feeling brave? Tempt your tastebuds with aebleskivers – a traditional Danish fritter - doused with a sauce made from fermented grasshopper. It may sound zany, but somehow the renowned chef Redzepi manages to make it all taste delightful. NOMA, COPENHAGEN COST OF A MEAL FOR TWO, WITHOUT WINE: £400
A Modern Marvel
Heston Blumenthal’s fascination with English culinary history has become something of an unexpected interest for us foodies. At his fashionable eatery in the Mandarin Oriental hotel, aptly named ‘Dinner’, you’ll find an abundance of modern-day marvels. DINNER, LONDON COST OF A MEAL FOR TWO, WITHOUT WINE: £150.

Avant Garde
Owned and run by three brothers in what may well be the most beautiful dining space in Europe, Celler de Can Roca encapsulates the tastes of various cuisines, using a Mediterranean twist. The most unique dish on the menu - a dessert entitled Messi’s Goal, which consists of a candied pitch, flying white chocolate balls, and a side of iPod – there to recreate the cheers from one of famous footballer’s goals.
Imagine avant-garding what was once the most avant-garde restaurant in the world and you’ll have a pretty clear picture of Alinea. It’s here they serve an 18 course tasting menu brandishing a series of plates with somewhat unusual names such as ‘Scallop Acting Like Agedashi Tofu’. Asides from housing cutlery that has been custommade for each course, many of the dishes are served directly onto the table.
CELLER DE CAN ROCA, GIRONA COST OF A MEAL FOR TWO, WITHOUT WINE: £240-300.

Successful Bright Tights day for Glategny Court MORE than £680 was raised by the four businesses that occupy Glategny Court in support of Bright Tights day. Staff from Collas Crill, the Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC), Investec and KPMG all supported the initiative by coming to work in their nuttiest nylons and organising various fundraising events to raise awareness of gynaecological cancers and raise funds for research into their causes and treatment. The fourth annual Bright Tights day saw many businesses across the island take part and involved various events organised by the charity itself, including a launch breakfast at Urban Kitchen.
The Guernsey Football Association secures new sponsorship for Academy LouvreFund has committed to a three-year sponsorship deal to support the Guernsey FA’s Development Academy for the island’s under-12 to under-16 year-old footballers. The High Performance Player Pathway scheme develops Guernsey’s promising players aged between 7 and 21 and the programme for 11–16 year-olds will be known as the Louvre Development Academy. The Louvre Development Academy aims to give the island’s young footballers the opportunity to be challenged at an appropriate level of competition in the under-12 to under-16 age groups. The coaching programme provides these youngsters with first-class training and competitive matches to allow them to maximise their all-round development as players and to generally improve themselves as individuals. The sponsorship provides the five year groups with kit and also contributes to travel to enable the teams to travel for offisland fixtures.

Business Benchmarking Three local businesses have provided new picnic benches in St Peter Port’s Sunken Garden at the top of Smith Street in a bid to enhance the facilities available in the area. The businesses, Heritage Insurance, Grant Thornton and Mourant Ozannes - each with offices close to the Sunken Garden - have sponsored a picnic bench. Richard Le Tocq, director at Heritage Insurance, was inspired to make a contribution following a TED X event organised by the Dandelion Project, which aims to make Guernsey the best place to live on earth by 2020. Mr Le Tocq said: “The idea was to make a contribution to improve our local area and make a difference to the community in which we live and work. I secured the support of three local businesses as we all appreciate that the Sunken Garden is a popular place for our staff to sit and get some fresh air during their breaks.” The benches are made from recycled plastic and were installed by the Community and Environmental Projects Team (CEPS), a project run by States Works that enables the unemployed and the long-term sick to participate in community projects. The installation took quite a lot longer than Mr Le Tocq first envisaged due to having to negotiate with many interested parties but the benches were eventually installed in August.
Airport Firefighters GO! Cycling the distance from Guernsey to Gatwick around the airport runway resulted in airport firefighters raising £5247 for Les Bourgs Hospice and Le Rondin School. The challenge was completed by three relay teams of five riders each. The teams took it in turns to complete four-mile laps of the runway overnight while the airport was closed. They completed the challenge of riding the 161 miles in eight hours, beginning at 9.30pm and finishing at 5.30am.
The Town Centre Partnership is looking to find sponsors for 16 Victorian benches situated along the Crown Pier as part of the organisation’s objective to work towards a better and brighter St Peter Port. The benches are one of a number of urban development projects undertaken by the Town Centre Partnership. There has already been a positive response to this initiative with five benches confirmed for sponsorship. Sponsors have the opportunity to include a small plaque on the bench, enabling them to leave a lasting message if they wish. There are 11 benches still available to sponsor, at £600 per bench. If you are interested in sponsoring one of the available benches, email Jack Honeybill at jackhoneybill@ hotmail.com

THE LUXURY OF HEALTH?
A local boy’s story K
erry Croxton realised there was a pregnancy problem during a regular 22 week scan at the Medical Specialist Group. Never seen before in Guernsey, early diagnosis prompted condition either being Campomelic Dysplasia (a narrowing of the chest with a slower growth rate than the internal organs resulting death in the womb) or Arthrogryprosis (a condition causing limb or skeletal deformity).
With terminations not being carried out in the UK after 24 weeks, Kerry and her partner Ian McMahon travelled to the Princess Anne’s fetal medicine unit in Southampton four times in two weeks for examination, diagnosis, prognosis with the hope of a management plan for treatment and care. Attending the last appointment Kerry and Ian were told that their unborn child could be born with severe mobility problems or may never walk. Both parents refused the option to terminate via an injection to the foetus’s heart, opting instead for an amniocentesis screening for Down Syndrome, Edwards Syndrome and Spina Bifida. Returning a negative result, they had to wait a further nine days for all pairs of chromosomes to be screened before knowing nothing else was in sight. It transpired that the results were negative again. Anthony Thomas McMahon was born on 10/10/2005 of natural birth at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital with his right foot at ninety degrees lying straight up against his leg and a shortened left leg. At ten days old, the family travelled to NHS Southampton General Hospital to meet with an orthopaedic team lead by Professor N Clarke who confirmed a congenital abnormality of Bi-Lateral Proximal Focal Femoral Dysplasia.
24
Anthony is a keen footballer
Even before twelve months, the words amputation and prosthesis were introduced as the only UK corrective solution addressing abnormality of the right leg. Lost in a wilderness of emotion, they contacted their Consultant Paediatrician, Dr Susan Eckhardt, at the MSG seeking a second opinion. A referral to Dr Hill at NHS Great Ormond Street Hospital in London left the parents fraught with despondency as he suggested bi-lateral amputation, cutting off both legs, with prosthesis. At the same time a world renowned Canadian orthopaedic surgeon in America, Dr Dror Paley, told Prof. Clarke that he could reconstruct Anthony’s right leg. Eight to nine months were then spent ensuring that a surgeon from America could operate on UK soil. The procedure was registered with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and Anthony had a Super Hip and Super Knee surgery carried out Dr Paley on 04 July 2008. A day the family now call and celebrate as “Anthony’s Independence Day.”

The day before surgery, DR Paley offered three possible surgical interventions that he could perform; a rotational plasty (rotating the femur 180 degrees using the ankle as a knee with the foot fitting into a prosthetic), a Symes amputation (removing the foot, knee fusion, hip fusion and prosthesis) or a super hip and super knee surgery (total knee reconstruction, limb realignment and hip stabilisation with movement). With Prof. Clarke assisting Dr Paley in theatre the parents were told that they would try and reconstruct the left hip at the same time. However, due to nine hours of surgery on the right leg it was not possible to attempt reconstruction of the left hip.

“In about a year, Dr Paley will return to the UK and we will repeat the surgery on Anthony’s left leg. Our aim is for his legs to be symmetrical, with normal hip and knee function”. Once that has been done, we will also be able to perform a limb lengthening procedure, so that he will hopefully be a good height. It is a long process, with several years of treatment, but the results should be worth it for Anthony. Anthony, a keen footballer and all round brilliant chap is still waiting while HSSD still deny his surgery quoting that it is experimental and unproven. THE PRICE OF
OPULENCE Words by Ruairi ONeill
I
’m sitting outside on a warm November afternoon. From my vantage point I can see twelve freighter ships waiting for docking approval in one of Africa’s busiest ports. Dar es Salaam (and Tanzania) is experiencing rapid economic growth, with vast sums of money being poured into the country in order to capitalise on its cheap labour forces and the untapped mineral fields littered all over the country.
26
Next to me, a table of South African businessmen discuss their import and export margins over a bottle of cheap red wine. They are walking that fine line between argument and conversation, whilst Blackberry’s and notepads are frantically tampered with to establish how much money can be made in the shortest amount of time. I’ve just finished my coffee and pay my friendly waiter, Rashid, the same amount for it as he receives in a day’s wages. A cheap labour force is key to making money anywhere, especially when that labour force are desperate to make as little as £1.86 a day. I recently received a document, distributed

by the Guernsey Finance Commission that showed in the third quarter of this year, the value of deposits held by banks in Guernsey grew by £3.5 billion (4.5%). Figures show that the value of bank deposits reached £80.9 billion at the end of September. This is still around £3 billion lower than the same time last year. A recent addition to the banking system is a South African fund, which has improved the result in the latter part of this year, adding those extra few billion to the results. Let me pretend that I’m writing this to someone who doesn’t live in my beloved Guernsey. Imagine your hometown slowly morphing into a glossy halls of residence for those finance workers; wouldn’t you want to know what the long term benefits are? The minimalist trends and the shared courtyards and the chrome-lined stairwells are a fleeting, fashionable fad that will age horrifically in a very short space of time. The developers for grand luxury apartments, in certain areas of St Peter Port, still can’t provide the poor souls who spooned out hilarious amounts of cash for their box room apartments, with clean drinking water, because the plumbing system is completely ruined. It’s like living in a developing country; except you’re provided with bottled water instead of having to walk to a well or bore hole. And don’t forget the beautiful view of our neighbouring islands. The ones that get sold off and shut down so we can’t use them anymore. Another fine example of opportunistic acquisition of wealth in the construction market – “this lot are good for it, they all work in finance! If we build it, they will come.” So what do we get in return for having our island turned into a savings cash cow for the ultra wealthy? What are the overall savings on the lifetime consumption of pints of milk, loaves of bread, alcohol and tobacco? The health implications of low cost alcohol and tobacco products can be seen every weekend in our capital city, specifically outside certain nightclubs. It’s relatively safe at night and glorious during the day, but I’m sure that has nothing to do with the amount of money being spent on housing or the budgets being cut for certain education programmes or healthcare. It’s safe because it’s an island and as hard as some people try, you’ll never get away with anything as long as you live in a community as small as ours. Unless, of course, it’s done behind closed doors and legal loopholes – then it’s a lot harder to police. What effect would a small percentage of this investment wealth have on the island? We know what would happen if somebody asked for a bit more.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
What effect would it have on the standard of teaching or the prevention of school closures or health provision for those in need? Or the reinforcement of support services who work insane hours to help people less fortunate than themselves? There are stories of little boys who desperately need new legs, and islanders who can’t afford life-altering medication because of budget cuts? A land that islanders have a stake in, by its existence alone, is the catalyst for the wealthy to save huge amounts of money. So surely, we shouldn’t have to ask for more? I wouldn’t be so crass as to suggest a pay-out or a briefcase full of pound notes, but there’s something to be said for supporting the hand that feeds you? I truly believe that Guernsey could be a huge Google office with all of the perks; for everyone involved. The finest healthcare supported by the greatest education system. A sustainable and forward thinking environment that the world could look at and say “those guys have the right idea”. Yes, there are some who commit their time and money to improving things on the island; the individuals who gift large sums of money to organisations that have been established to support those in need. Hats off to them, you know who you are! Those who raise money and invest time, with blood, sweat and mind boggling sacrifice are the ones our grand global businesses should look to for inspiration. There are some financial institutions that “do the same”. The ones who ask their own staff to volunteer (for free during their lunch hours) to help others. It’s never done quietly and there is always an eager press release, triple checked by the Human Resources department and which usually appears in some free glossy publication… Lifetime commitments to charity, healthcare and education for our island are what we need if the finance system isn’t going anywhere. It’s an opportunist scenario, similar to that in developing Africa, with the finance system on the island. How long will it last until the foreign teams (our banking staff are so eagerly training up) realise that their contracts will terminate due to a cheaper labour force, able to do the same admin, in an overseas jurisdiction?
The glory days are certainly over. Now that regulation and policy rule the day. And that is the exact reason we should question the Opulence of our finance bubble. Policy and regulation will always dictate when business needs to move somewhere else in order to prevent loss of profits. The stat guys (and gals) that enforce these systems with tender loving handshakes are merely doing their jobs after all. In a creative seminar last year, the islands boldest and brightest descended on the Duke of Richmond to thrash out the creative potential of the island and to celebrate its media stars. Our beloved Island FM politician was there, explaining how a recent trip to some faraway land could equip the island with the knowledge it needs to revamp and establish our small community as a pioneer in digital network services. And so were the teachers, who at the very end of the seminar explained how their media courses were being cancelled from the curriculum and students were being forced to stream internet resources via the teachers 3G network connected iPad – they shouldn’t complain, it’ll be 4G soon which we can all look forward to paying for. But why must we look to foreign lands for such ideas? Do the intellectual behemoths and wealthy businessmen and women who reside on our fair isle not have the technological and political know how to ensure that we could be world leading without looking at what others are doing? Or are they simply afraid to ask the people here, who actually could solve the problems if they were given the opportunity to? It seems that those in control of budgets are far happier paying vast sums of money to sharp suited consultants with endless buzz lingo to tongue them into bed with their forward thinking ideas. I say listen to organisations like the Dandelion Project. I say stop the monopoly on air and sea travel and ask us what we want. I say give the aging lodge members in the planning committee the boot and let the new generation of talented engineers, planners and business specialists make the decisions for the future of housing, business and education whilst shaving the banks for that little extra. It would go a long way! Speaking of which, I wonder how many overpriced apartments we could develop on the greenhouse plots…

HOME SWEET DRONE
Property Purchase is something that goes on everyday, people save up their entire lives to buy a house they can make a home. We are all well aware of the extravagant purchases going on in the world, mainly through the celebrity culture and their need to post endless selfies in front of their new million dollar purchases. However, the CEO of a gaming company took things to another level (no pun intended) by purchasing a virtual planet, called Calypso, on the online gaming platform ‘Entropia Universe’ for $6 million. This makes it the most expensive virtual purchase EVER! We know this is confusing, buying a virtual world in an online game, surely it was virtual money too. Nope, unfortunately not. Somebody did actually pay $6 million for a world they can’t visit, a house they can’t sleep in and to make things worse, they have to pay their monthly subscriptions to even have access to their gaming planet.

BIG BAD WOLF?
The film the Wolf of Wall Street is based on the life of debauchery of Jordan Belfort, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, that he carries out whilst scamming people out of money through the stock market. The real Jordan Belfort has said although the film is accurate he thinks his real life was probably worse, filled with more illegal indulgences and opulent binges. The real Jordan is still paying back the $110.4 million dollars he was ordered to pay after being imprisoned for 22 months for his criminal activities.
OH CHRISTMAS TREE!
The Emirates Palace Hotel in Dubai unveiled an $11.5 million Christmas Tree, making it the most expensive Christmas tree ever. The 40ft evergreen tree alone cost $10,000 but the real bulk of the price came from the lavish jewels it was decked in. With diamonds, pearls, emeralds, sapphires this tree made the original Frankincense and Myrrh look like the pair of sock you used to get off of your Grandma when you were 10. The jewels were loaned from a local jewelry gallery. If any local jewelers need a place to keep their diamonds this festive season just get in contact, I’m sure we will be more than happy to help you out. Tis’ the season of goodwill after all...

WEDDING BELLS, SLEIGH BELLS
With the end of November through to New Year’s Day making up 33% of all marriage proposals, it certainly says something about chivalry or perhaps the guys who are just egged on by too much eggnog. This means finding the perfect glacier to place upon her finger to guarantee a yes, because as we all know if you like it then you should put a ring on it… There’s nothing wrong with a grand gesture, in fact, we love them, but what about a 24.78-carat pink diamond ring worth $46 million. Yeah, we probably wouldn’t say no either. The ring was purchased at an auction in Geneva by London diamond dealer Laurence Graff, setting a World Record for the most expensive jewel ever sold at auction.

Fundraising continues to maintain the ward,

Christmas Fayre raised a combined total of over £20,000 for the charities taking part! This year, almost every kind of Christmas card and gift could be found at the Fayre, together with home baked cakes and mince pies, childrens books and games, bric-a-brac, and so much more. Hayley de Putron, trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation and founder of the De Putron
Challenge presented the winning teams with a special award. The winners of the Years 6 and 8 events will go on to compete in the inter-island final at St James Concert Hall on Monday 24th November against the winning Jersey teams: Victoria College in Year 6 and Beaulieu Convent in Year 8.

KARIBU HILI… AS THEY SAY IN SWA

ituated on the edge of the Ngorongoro crater forest, the castle is Tanzania’s newest and most exclusive safari lodge. So naturally we had someone from Gallery go check it out.
It’s an environmentally aware and ecofriendly accommodation and the lavish solarpowered retreat offers the discerning visitor the perfect combination of privacy, luxury and traditional hospitality. With only six king-sized rooms, tranquillity is guaranteed!
36
As the African sun rises, I am greeted by glorious birdsong of what seems like a hundred different species announcing a new dawn amidst the cool highland air. My view is a sprawling carpet of green reaching out to dense forest below, stretching as far as the eye can see. Wild Elephants have followed migratory paths for hundreds of years in close proximity to this unique African abode, and it is standard practice to notice these grand animals moving around the grounds of the castle. The cries of crested eagles (high above the castle) echo across the open valley that hedges the thick forest, and naughty bush pig trot across the lawn as I try to soak in the opulent beauty at my disposal.
The Safari castle is a unique concept in safari style. Built with sumptuous river stones and decorated with an array of rustic sandstone and terra cotta tiles, the lodge gracefully blends with the natural landscape. Native hardwood gothic doors compliment the interior and two thousand panes of glass, set meticulously into the castle walls, bathe the interior with warm natural light at all times of the day. Each guest room has an exquisite view of the Ngorongoro forest, which rolls majestically along the sides of the crater and extends for thousands of acres. Inside the castle there is ample room for guests to relax and unwind after a memorable day on safari. A

choice of two inviting living rooms and an additional upstairs library await you where you can put your feet up, light a fire or read a book. Should you prefer to sip a sundowner outdoors, dine al fresco or perhaps just recline and admire the scenery, a host of enticing nooks and crannies await you, including the elegant interior courtyard, the rooftop terrace or the wrap-around terra cotta patio. A large hardwood deck by the edge of the forest also provides the perfect spot to enjoy the sunshine and get closer to nature. The castle at Ngorongoro provides a perfect place to rest and recuperate from the hustle and bustle of city life or the stagnant familiarity of island life! Nearby safari parks include the Ngorongoro crater, the Serengeti and Lake Manyara but the wildlife and scenery in Tanzania is quite possibly the best in the world. The parks are teeming with animals, both large and small and the natural scenery of such wonders as Ngorongoro, Serengeti or Kilimanjaro are unrivalled. The people are a special attraction in Tanzania too. Many tribes populate the country and

some, such as the Masai or the Hadzabe still live by traditional rules and customs. These cheerful, welcoming people are an integral part of a safari experience and give a glimpse of African life and customs, which date back many generations. The native tribes dine on the sumptuous natural views and relish their place among the rich array of wildlife every day; a privilege which they wear visibly with great pride and happiness.  I was encouraged to relax during my time at the Safari castle and had originally decided to enjoy a stay of several nights. But it became apparent after the first day that I might require some extra time to ensure the best safari experience possible! I needed to allow a little more time to attune to the special environment and the natural beauty that surrounded me. At dusk, the red sun bows behind the African horizon to the crescendo of crickets and night sounds continue to reveal nature’s story. Hyena laugh, whilst male lions call out to the pride to commence hunting.
For guests who like to stay active there are guided walking tours available into the forest of Ngorongoro or village walks, to familiarise yourself with local people and ways of life. Cultural outings can be arranged by request or for the very fit, mountain biking can be offered and the area offers many beautiful hilly tracks to work out and get the blood pumping! The castle at Ngorongoro is located along the edge of the Ngorongoro forest a short drive from the nearby town of Karatu (20 mins drive). M
att Norman is a forty six year old craftsman living in Guernsey. First and foremost, Matt is an engineer, starting his professional career as an apprentice mechanical fitter after leaving school. After gaining essential knowledge and experience he moved on to production engineering and then worked and gained electrical and mechanical licenses in aircraft engineering.
42
He now works for himself, carrying out a wide range of projects and commissions that target bespoke creations for his clients to enjoy. For Matt, incorporating conceptual design, prototyping and finally production is the key to a successful and striking creation. He happily states that; “I become especially motivated when a customer is looking for something that doesn’t already exist.” It is the core element of what pushes Matt to develop new and exciting products. It is also an important aspect of his repair services and fixing broken items and replacing what is no longer serviceable.
The engineer admits that he has been developing and inventing for approximately forty years, which begs the question, how old was he when he first started? “First and foremost I am an engineer, after that anything goes really! If I had to put a date on when it all started, it was probably back in primary school, when I successfully rigged up a burglar alarm in my Year 6 school desk. I have been taking things apart and sometimes successfully putting them back together again for about 40 years now.” Apart from his butterfly mind (which he states “drives my wife crazy”), the most important tool that Matt Norman uses

is his computer, which provides him with the tools he needs to create a framework for the final product - a highly technical starting vision. ”I use digital prototyping to help visualise the concept which also gives the added bonus of achieving a high degree of accuracy and efficient use of materials.” Matt fuses his precision engineering with artistic flair – the perfect combination of imagination and science. His preferred materials to work with are metals, electronic components and wood. He confesses that the use of cheap materials or imitation products is never a good idea, as the time and effort poured into creating a piece is reflected in the products used and the final appearance; “I try to create products that are as close to locally made as possible. Quality being the main priority and most of the time I end up with a successful result!” When asked what his favourite project or furnishing to date is, Matt responds quickly and without hesitation. It’s clear that there is great joy in what he does, especially as he can recall his most beloved creation – a simple domed table lamp, which he tells us is due to its tactile attraction and uncomplicated design. This piece opens up another stream of interest, especially when asked what factors are important when constructing or creating an item of furniture or similar product. He explains, “My table lamps are a case in point. The shape came as a result of wanting to utilise low powered LED light sources.” It’s that simple. Working around design constraints to fulfill an objective, resulting in a piece that he cherishes because of its simplicity. Matt Norman likes to attack a problem from an engineering perspective. By injecting creative ideas into the design, where the form of the product comes first, he can then apply his wealth of experience to develop a truly spectacular product. His current project, a series of curved benches, is especially interesting because of the endless design possibilities and he is eager to show them off! BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

If you want to spend money on yourself, you may find greater happiness in switching from buying material objects (TVs or cars) to buying experiences (trips and special events). Psychologists have proved that creating and enjoying memorable experiences is more satisfying than owning material possessions
The Opulence of Having Less Words | Marc Winn
M
any people work long, hard hours to make more money - at the expense of spending time with family, getting a good night’s sleep, or being healthy and relaxed. But there comes a time when striving, earning or acquiring money becomes counterproductive – and when having more money doesn’t make us any happier!
Evidence suggests that the more money a person makes, the more their expectations and desires rise – and because they always want ‘more’, the happiness they crave is always out of reach. In the late 1990s, psychologist Michael Eysenck used the phrase ‘hedonic treadmill’ to compare the pursuit of happiness with running fast and working hard, while still staying in the same place. There is no increase in long-term happiness. Since money doesn’t buy happiness, why not free ourselves by making the most of what we have, and being happy now? Know your ‘minimum wealth’ point and your happiness set-point: work out the minimum sum you need to earn and the minimum possessions you need to have, to be happy. Time is money, and money can buy you time. Invest in either one, and you’ll get more of the other. This way, you can create a more enjoyable and meaningful life. Decide how you will invest money to free up your time. Pay people to do things for you (especially dull or time-consuming things), then invest that ’spare’ time on the things you really want to do.
44
The trick is to invest in services that give you more time, and to own fewer assets that consume your time. The bigger your house and the more cars you have, the greater the likelihood that they prevent you from achieving your goals. They tie you down, and their acquisition, ownership and maintenance takes away time and money! Look at the ‘opportunity costs’ of ownership. These are the sacrifices you make - the ‘cost’ of choosing one thing over another. Opportunity costs are not just financial, but include lost time, pleasure or other benefits. For example, the opportunity costs of owning a luxury car are: having the cash instead and the benefits from spending that money on other things (a holiday or a day off each week to spend with your family). Then count the time and resources it takes to maintain your car – the garage and cleaning costs. It all becomes a burden, rather than a delight. There are better ways to live, and enjoy the good things in life including luxuries. There’s no need to own things. You can rent or borrow almost anything these days. So, think about renting rather than buying. There is a short lifespan to enjoying new things, like the latest gadgets - the novelty soon wears off and we become acclimatised and ‘dull’ to the appeal. So why not enjoy the benefits in the short term, without the longterm cost and upkeep? Keep changing the item or the experience and keep the thrill and excitement fresh. Get more happiness for your money by practising ‘under-indulgence’. Savouring one, single chocolate can be more enjoyable than wolfing down a whole boxful. By denying yourself excess, you can better appreciate the finer things in life. Live in a small house and rent a huge, luxury pad occasionally. Drive a simple car, and hire a
top-of-the-range sports car sometimes, to really relish the experience. The cost is far, far less, yet the enjoyment is much greater. We can take such possessions for granted. Freeing up our cash instead of tying it to expensive assets means we can indulge in a wider range of luxuries and experiences! If you want to spend money on yourself, you may find greater happiness in switching from buying material objects (TVs or cars) to buying experiences (trips and special events). Psychologists have proved that creating and enjoying memorable experiences is more satisfying than owning material possessions. Don’t ignore your bucket list or delay taking action! In fact, for increased happiness, you are better off buying for other people. People who spend money on others rather than themselves are happier, rewarded by sharing and enriched with feelings of goodwill. In fact, giving someone your time or experience can be more powerful, and your happiness greater. Experiencing some quality time and giving your undivided attention to someone can mean far more to them than a beautifully wrapped gift. Although birthdays, anniversaries and Christmas may be the exception to that rule! Now, spending quality time on what you enjoy - that’s a luxury that has real value. Let’s make it an essential!

ucked away nicely in a former bank in Guernsey, Ray and Scott Jewellers has grown to one of the most respected diamond and watch merchants in the UK. Built on the passion of owners Martin Search and Jeff Fox, the company has flourished to such an extent they are now able to offer quality and service which rivals struggle to match.
Martin and Jeff have built up such a reputation within the industry they house the only Blancpain boutique within the UK, outside of Harrods and are able to secure limited edition timepieces from the likes of TAG Heuer before the worldwide launch. So what is it Ray & Scott offer that sets them apart from the rest?
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
the hour
“I wish I were a woman!” jokes Martin. “I just adore diamonds.” Martin has been involved with the company for 41 years, having been taken on as a trainee manager by Charles Ray, one of the former owners. He said, “I had a fantastic boss in Mr. Ray who was a great communicator. He gave me a lot of one on one training...I didn’t expect to own the shop but he believed in me and when I was 36, I took over the business”. Then 16 years ago Martin met Jeff Fox at Baselworld Watch and Jewellery Show in Switzerland. He liked him and decided to ‘woo him over’ to Guernsey; “He would come over to Guernsey every year. Ten years ago, I was at his wedding and I made my own business proposal to him”. Martin had the interest and history in diamonds, while Jeff brought with him knowledge and expertise in the watch field. Since the duo combined they have
expanded their product range, not only be securing the exclusive Blancpain tie up, but by also housing a TAG Heuer boutique, bespoke Omega area, wedding and diamond rooms. Jeff has a keen interest in high end, rare watches – many of them with ground breaking mechanisms, while Martin is the man who sources conflict-free diamonds from only trustworthy suppliers. In 2009 the pair made history when they completed the sale of a watch to a collector on Guernsey for $1,000,000. Martin adds “We like to differentiate ourselves from the average jeweller, and tend to focus on the bespoke and higher end of the market. “We are evolving as a business and don’t agree with resting on our laurels. Our enduring vision is to be one of the best shops within the south of the UK and Channel Islands, and to develop a ‘Bond Street’ ambience in the store”.

Bigger Studio for Dani Stevens
L
ast month saw Andy Priaulx cut the ribbon and invite the public to celebrate the opening of the newly finished studio of Dani Stevens Photography. Dani’s been supporting Andy’s charity, The Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation, since she opened her business - donating raffle prizes and raising money during Mother’s Day every year so it was a lovely thank you to see him cut the cord. Dani has been specialising in bump to baby photography of soon to be mums, newborns as young as 5 days old, babies as they’re learning to crawl and images showing adorable first expressions and the popular first birthday cake smash session. Dani’s been photographing newborns for over 5 years; training with UK, American and Australian photographers. As the business has grown it had become quite cramped in Dani’s old 400sq foot studio space. Her new space will see her facility double in size. Dani has extended to make more room for her office, a client gallery viewing area, a kitchen for cups of tea and plently of storage space. The renovation consisted of new floors, knocking down walls, refinishing the bathrooms, a new kitchen, painting walls and furniture, and a lot of other DIY. The event was a full house with face painter Joni very busy making beautiful designs on all the children's faces. Goodie bags with vouchers and information leaflets were distributed including bits and bobs from other baby affiliated companies. Elise from Angelic Bakes provided cupcakes for the event as well as yummy biscuits in the goodie bags.

A new mystery bar for St Peter Port...? We went and checked it out...
SPEAKEASY
G
uernsey obviously wasn’t affected by the prohibition era of 1920s America, being situated rather far away. But what if we did welcome dapper bootleggers touting moonshine onto our cobbled streets? Making a distinct break away from the plastic seating, cheap drinks and surgical bright lighting of many of the island’s night spots is a new speakeasy style bar, but its whereabouts is strictly for you to find out. In true speakeasy style the entrance to the loft top bar isn’t immediately obvious. There’s no neon signage begging all and sundry through the doors. I made my ascent through a midnight blue corridor and was welcomed into an opulent space, burnished with soft green leather seats and a long copper bar.
64
It was early evening yet small groups of elegant customers were already huddled in the dim corners revelling in the consumption of all things boozy to the sound of mellow music. Despite doing a good speakeasy imitation – the contents of its menu are far from bathtub gin. Neither does it include the saccharine shots nor sticky shooters that these days I only like to enjoy every once in a while, honest. I’m told by a sharp suited barman that the bar full of spirits has been carefully selected; you know they’re good when the bottles become conversational pieces in themselves. Take the shotgun shaped glass decanter and the “shrivelled head” – apparently full of dark rum. But the real skill is in knowing how to mix a good cocktail with your ingredients. Every cocktail I’ve ever made has ended up tasting like nail varnish remover no matter how hard I shake it. Taking a brief look at the

menu I was a bit intimidated – these sounded more like HBO series than drinks, but most of the other cocktails I’d tried, (Sex on The Beach, Bootylicious etc.) were more like MTV ones, so I figured I might just enjoy it. I ordered a ‘Portwalk Heist’ thinking “when in Rome” as I’d feel out of place in here if I wasn’t sipping something with Bourbon. Served up in a crystal glass the Maker’s Mark Bourbon was nicely set off with a hint of lemon and raspberry syrup which gave it the right amount of sweetness. The prices are – reassuring, but that hardly matters seeing as you don’t even know where it is yet.
WE’RE NOT AFRAID TO SHOW A LITTLE BOTTLE
That’s what makes Gallery different. It’s been great spending time with our forward thinking readers in 2014. We look forward to catching up with you again in February.
Drink and be merry Guernsey.
A few more clues though; with a view of St Peter Port’s beautiful lit up harbour and Castle Cornet in the distance, it’s less of a place for a once a year blow out celebration, more like somewhere to catch the attention of who’s hard to impress – at least every now and again.

THE PLANNING STARTED IN JULY THE DIET STARTS IN JANUARY
S E ASO N S EATI N GS
E
arlier this year, we were invited to a very special showcase in the heart of London. The award-winning Waitrose brand was exhibiting its vast array of new products for Christmas and beyond, with all manner of interesting and delicious alternatives to traditional Christmas foodstuffs and gift options. Year after year, the Waitrose team manage to raise the standard of consumer goods and the way we like to purchase. As many of us are aware, supporting local business is what makes Guernsey great and Waitrose continue to be mindful of this important aspect of our Island consumer market. Their unique style of marketing and consideration of local goods and produce is why we love their brand and its forward thinking approach. A whole host of new edible developments have transpired for Christmas 2014, as they yet again team up with food technician and culinary scientist, Heston Blumenthal. The world-renowned chef, best known for his spectacular food fusions and distinctive outlook on food crafting and preparation, was on hand to educate us on the unique products available this Christmas. Starting with the main event, the team were treated to a Christmas classic with a twist Christmas dinner has never been easier with the all-new Waitrose Turkey range. There’s the Turkey Cracker in buttered muslin with chestnut, bacon, cranberry and juniper stuffing or the two-bird turkey and duck easy carve with plum stuffing.
66
Turkey doesn’t have to play the starring role every year and we were encouraged by a deft Waitrose chef to sample the free-range traditional goose with pork, pear and gooseberry stuffing with a sliced apple glaze. Truly delicious! For the chocaholics amongst us, the sheer choice of sweet treats was almost overpowering. The Waitrose Select chocolate assortment is so good, you’ll have to hide them until after Christmas lunch! But setting the standard in Christmas confectionary is the Waitrose sweet cup range. With a variety of flavours including subtle fruit infusions, coffee truffles and hints of honeycomb, these delectable mini dishes are best served cold or at room temperature. Irresistible and utterly moreish, these will make a great gift or even just a selfish treat! For the kids, there is the Waitrose Milk Chocolate Reggie Robin - a light milk chocolate Reggie Robin is the perfect stocking filler for those eager present openers on Christmas morning. A light and creamy chocolate gift that’s fun, tasty and more importantly, perfectly priced. The highlight of the Christmas showcase was the Waitrose assurance that however big your hosting needs are this Christmas; there is something for everyone in the new Waitrose by Heston range. Having sampled all of the products on show, our taste buds were ignited by Heston Blumenthal’s delicious desserts. The Heston from Waitrose collection has your Christmas covered this year and new for 2014, are some stunning desserts to create the festive wow factor that Heston is famous for.

OPULENT EATERIES Sometimes you feel like pushing the boat out – perhaps even literally – for a special dining experience. Caroline Mauger recommends some eateries where a sumptuous feast is guaranteed – because you’re worth it.
LA FRÉGATE - GUERNSEY La Frégate is a beautifully refurbished boutique hotel and the restaurant is fresh and modern with amazing views over St Peter Port harbour. The food here is an opulent treat, and you never know quite what to expect as the à-la-carte menu changes monthly, making the most of local, seasonal produce. You know you’re in for a treat as soon as the bread basket comes around, with a choice that hopefully includes their wonderful walnut bread. Everything has interesting accompaniments, like the duck confit spring rolls with a kumquat reduction. And local fish might be served with a shellfish risotto, scallops and Champagne butter – delicious! You have to leave some room for the chef’s selection of desserts: share it if you must, or go for the smaller Assiette Gourmand, a trio of delights served with an espresso.
70
RED - GUERNSEY Although I’m a fish-loving white-wine drinker, there’s something about Red that makes me crave a tender steak and a smooth glass or two of red. The restaurant’s interior might just have something to do with it: rich crimson and lush, with cowhide booths and a custom-made table made from Bordeaux boxes, heaving with a huge variety of red wines. Dave Matheson knows (and loves) his wines and steaks, so do ask for advice; he sources wines from small artisan producers so why not try something different? The sides are to die for, especially the spinach, hazelnut and parmesan salad, which comes in a Kilner jar, and the truffled chips. If Porterhouse steak is on the specials board, go for that too. STOCKS SARK Stocks was the Dame of Sark’s favourite hotel, where she would often entertain royalty and heads of state. Stocks is even more luxurious these days, following an extensive refurbishment. For a truly lavish treat, stay the night - it doesn’t even matter if the weather is bad, as the old stable block now houses a spa, gym, small shop and an art and crafts room. The hotel’s website celebrates its local ‘food heroes’ so you can be sure of the provenance of the ever-changing menu. They bake their own breads, smoke their own fish and meats and even make their own wines, sloe gin and apple brandy. You really want opulence? Go for the six-
course tasting menu: it’s foodie heaven and each course is accompanied by a different wine. Go on, you won’t be driving! HÔTEL DE LA MARINE BARNEVILLE-CARTERET If you were really lavish, you’d hop in your gin palace and be in France for a spot of lunch. I’m not that well-to-do but my dad does have a Catamaran so every so often I’ll cadge a lift to get there in time for dinner. The most exclusive restaurant in Carteret has to be Michelin-starred La Marine. It serves amuse-bouches, so you know it’s posh! I’ll never forget the creamy foie gras concoction I was served in an espresso cup – you wanted more, but knew that, with something so rich, less was more. The ultimate set menu is 90€, but you definitely wouldn’t be slumming it if you went for the 50€ option. Every dish is a work of art and, as you’d expect, shellfish features heavily: from scallops with caviar, to oysters served three ways. As for the desserts, they almost look too good to eat; I must have admired mine for at least 10 seconds before tucking in. Food isn’t just about fuel for the body, when it’s prepared by skilled chefs it’s a sensory experience and one of life’s pleasures. So don’t deny yourself an opulent gastronomic adventure every once in a while!

EY welcomes its 2014 trainee associates to the firm
IoD Award for Eliza
EY in the Channel Islands has appointed 22 trainee associates who will begin developing and shaping their careers whilst studying for a professional qualification. During the first week the associates from Jersey and Guernsey joined together and attended an induction programme designed to deliver key messages and demonstrate how their role and EY’s business in the Channel Islands play a valuable part within the global firm. The week also included some fun and challenging team building activities as well as taking part in a corporate responsibility day.
Eliza Collenette from the Grammar School has won the 2014 Institute of Directors (IoD) Guernsey Management Shadowing Awards. The awards, sponsored by KPMG, were held at the Duke of Richmond Hotel and Eliza was one of ten finalists shortlisted from over 60 who completed the programme. Eliza shadowed Fiona Naftel at Les Cotils. Her winning presentation articulated what she had learnt about management during her shadowing experience, describing Fiona Naftel as the ‘captain of the ship’ – the glue that holds it all together. She learned how communication, teamwork and strong leadership were key management skills but success was dependent on everyone.

Smaller hire cars for visitors?
Carey Olsen ranked tier 1
Banking deposits grow in Q3
Carey Olsen’s work in the financial and corporate and investment funds areas in Guernsey and Jersey has been recognised by the legal industry in the 2015 International Financial Law Review 1000 (IFLR1000) guide. The new results come just after the firm gained tier 1 rankings across all of its Channel Island practice areas in The UK Legal 500. For the fifth consecutive year Carey Olsen has retained its top tier position in Guernsey for both categories. Carey Olsen Chairman, John Kelleher, said: “Our top tier status demonstrates the high level of our commercial advice and the impeccable service that we provide to our clients across the Channel Islands.”
The value of deposits held by banks in Guernsey grew by £3.5 billion (4.5%) during the third quarter of the year. Figures from the Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC) show that the value of bank deposits reached £80.9 billion at the end of September. This is still around £3 billion lower than the same time last year..
The States of Guernsey will be asked to approve The Motor Taxation (First Registration Duty) (Guernsey) Ordinance at its meeting on 10 December 2014. This will apply to new and used cars, which are imported and registered in Guernsey for the first time with effect from 1 January 2015. A surprising effect of the proposed new width tax would be on the availability of vehicles offered by local hire car companies to tourists. Due to the cost implications, TrustFord – the supplier of vehicles to Guernsey’s hire car companies – wouldn’t be able to supply family-sized vehicles. This could have a detrimental effect on the tourist industry for families and those requiring lots of luggage space.
GFSC fees up 1.33%
The Commission has confirmed that it will increase fees in 2015 for all sectors by an average of 1.33%. It will also continue with the implementation of the second year of a two-year approach to address certain anomalies in its fee structure. The blended rate of increase including all anomalies is just under 2%. The Commission has decided to reduce the planned increases for fiduciary licences (after objections) as follows - Personal licence application 2014 fee was £880; initial proposed fee £1,760, revised new fee £970. Full licence application 2014 fee was £1,986; initial proposed fee £6,030, revised new fee £2,205.
New programmes manager to focus on GTA University Centre’s legal and finance courses A SPECIALIST in tertiary education has joined the GTA University Centre to focus on the courses it offers the legal and financial services industries. Paula Williams moved to the island to be closer to her husband’s family after being affected by the Christchurch earthquakes. She has spent the last 18 months working in the finance industry but is now returning to education bringing with her 10 years’ experience in both the education sector and as a learning and development professional in the private sector.

Guernsey signs cooperation agreement with Beijing
FirstRand secures Guernsey banking licence
The Guernsey Government has signed a Statement of Cooperation with the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Financial Work. The agreement to cooperate in the promotion of common prosperity and development across both jurisdictions was signed in Beijing by Kevin Stewart, Guernsey’s Commerce and Employment Minister and SHEN Hong, Vice Counsel of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Financial Work. The Minister said: “This agreement demonstrates our continued commitment to not only China but Beijing specifically. It represents the next phase of our relationship to cooperate, exchange ideas and trade together more extensively in the future. We are looking forward to sharing in the mutual benefits of this partnership.”
The Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC) issued a deposit-taking licence to FirstRand Bank Limited Guernsey branch last month. The new banking operation will trade as FNB Channel Islands and will launch formally next year. The bank enhances FirstRand’s presence in Guernsey as it already provides a wide range of fiduciary services through FNB International Trustees Limited – the specialist international offshore service provider of the FirstRand Group. FirstRand is South Africa’s largest bank by market capitalisation and this new branch will bring the total number of licensed banks in Guernsey to 31.

Knowing exactly what career path you wish to take isn’t easy, especially when there are so many roles and industries to choose from. Embarking on an internship is a great way to kick start your profession. An internship gives you the opportunity to parade your existing skill base, embrace new experiences and meet key contacts. In fact, landing an internship can considerably increase your chances of landing your dream job. It’s also a fail-safe way to discover whether an occupation or organisation is right for you. Although a work placement may only last a short while, the skills learnt will last years to come! From refining and defining your career goals to gaining real world experience, an internship not only looks good on your cv, it’s a prospective springboard to a full time profession.
Plus some words from local Gradu8 recruits. Gallery speaks to recent graduates about their move to the working world, what motivates them and what advice they’d give to those that are new to Jersey’s top companies. We also caught up with a recruitment consultant to hear about their advice for graduates.
EY CHANNEL ISLANDS SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
This year, EY launched its Summer Internship in the Channel Islands – a four-week programme that gave 14 undergraduates an invaluable insight into the world of business. The students came from different universities, studying a wide range of degrees including English literature, history, archaeology and physics, but they all had a common goal and that was to learn more about accountancy. The Summer Internship began in Jersey with interns from both islands joining together for a four-day induction that included a corporate responsibility day at Durrell, an interactive day of bookkeeping and presentations on EY and its values. The remaining three weeks combined on-thejob learning, through work experience and job shadowing, with informative workshops and presentations. “During the first week induction we had talks and workshops hosted by various people at EY. I learned a lot about the firm: its history, its values, and long-term career prospects. One of the best things about the induction was the emphasis on developing the interns’ soft skills and promoting our business awareness,” said George Thompson. The goal of the internship is to allow students to learn about the firm’s work and culture while also developing the soft skills required to build a successful career. It is tailored to suit individual needs and provides enough time for the interns to begin to assess which practice area and career path suits them best. “We were straight in at the deep end – casting financial statements, building up lead sheets and sifting through general
ledger statements,” said Nathan Pinel. “I worked across three different audits and by the end my knowledge of how audits are conducted and the structure of EY grew. It was a great opportunity to improve my knowledge of auditing as well as my soft skills, which are so important if you are to work well in a team environment,” said Callum Rabet. “Each week workshops were given on topics such as interview, presentation, and networking skills. These soft skills are vital in anyone’s career so the opportunity for guided development in these areas was extremely beneficial,” said Kate Wakeham. Along with training in both hard and soft skills, interns are also given the chance to experience EY’s corporate sustainability programme and social initiatives; “The sports and social club at EY is very active and we were made to feel welcome from day one. We were invited to the sustainability day at Durrell, work drinks, beach rugby and the EY summer event. EY also has a great health and wellbeing initiative where we sampled some healthy smoothies,” said Maelle Smith EY’s internship has many benefits for anyone looking to gain the experience and skills necessary to jump-start a successful career or discover the right path for them.
“EY offers what I can promise is a month of experience that will be sure to settle your nerves regarding those big career decisions. I didn’t take accountancy as a degree and wasn’t sure where I would be heading, but I knew that I had an interest in financial services, travelling and communication. Being a big, global and exciting firm, EY offers all of these opportunities and much more. What’s more the internship can set you up for a brilliant job opportunity after university.” Alex Casalis de Pury “Before joining I was not aware of the extent of career paths and travel opportunities available with EY. Through organised talks with various employees, each of whom had different experiences to share with us, I now know the wide range of options available as a graduate,” said Kate Wakeham. The final two days saw the interns join together in Guernsey for informal team building activities, presentations on tasks set throughout the internship and a screening of the summer internship video soon to be launched on the EY Channel Islands Careers Facebook page. The video was another exciting part to the programme and a memorable end to the internship.

FIRST YEAR AT KPMG
K
PMG Channel Islands Limited is a leading accountancy firm which offers around 10 training contracts each year. Students are given the opportunity to move between the three service lines of Audit, Tax and Advisory, exposing them to all areas of the business to consolidate the knowledge gained through their professional studies. In August 2013 nine students started the journey towards professional qualifications with KPMG in the Channel Islands. We caught up with them after 15 months to find out what their experience in a professional services firm has been like. The group varies in age from 19 to 27, some having joined KPMG after completing A-Levels or degrees, while others had travelled or had already experienced the working world before embarking on a professional qualification. When they were much younger, the group had various careers in mind, including a wrestler, a vet, a teacher, a fireman and an architect! Whilst none of them had harboured long-term dreams of accountancy, they are all confident that they have made the right career decision.
Kathryn Angliss came to KPMG with a BA (Hons) in Sociology. She has completed nine of the 15 ICAEW exams since August 2013 and her main piece of advice for anyone contemplating a career in accountancy is to ask lots of questions. “Making the right choice is tough. I sought advice from people I knew who had careers in accountancy and asked many questions during the interview process. Being armed with so much information gave me the confidence that I knew what I was getting into.”
Jonty Erridge’s advice for any new students is to focus on maintaining a healthy balance between the commitments of work deadlines, study and your private life. “Passing exams whilst working and maintaining an active social life is tough, but KPMG put a strong emphasis on everyone maintaining a healthy work/life balance. One of my favourite activities has been joining the football team. I studied Sport and Exercise Science at university and being able to keep active is invaluable to me.”
Sam Corbet joined the audit department of KPMG after deciding to change careers from an algorithmic trading company which traded in FX markets. “I was looking for a career that would offer a wealth of opportunity. Once I become ICAEW qualified my goal is to go on secondment to South America.” Sam has been able to take advantage of the opportunities that KPMG’s flexible culture provides by spending three months in the tax department. “I really appreciated the opportunity to learn about an area of the industry which is directly applicable to my daily work and my professional studies. The fact that the firm accommodated my move helped confirm to me that I have definitely made the right choice”
Debbie Smith, HR Executive Director, says, “We recognise that our staff members have aspirations outside of their professional lives and support them as much as possible. We operate a flexible working policy and are able to offer staff of all levels periods out of the office to meet their travel or sporting aspirations.”

VICKI
DICK-CLELAND 27 ASSURANCE MANAGER AT PwC
What made you choose the company you work for? Before going into my final year I started considering my options. I knew I wanted something with a professional qualification, clear career progression and the opportunity to travel. I looked at the Times Top Graduate Employer list and PwC were number 1, so it seemed an obvious choice. I had interviews with other large accountancy firms, but what I liked best about PwC were the people. Everyone I came across during the interview stage was friendly, approachable and professional. What sort of professional training do you take? I am ACA qualified with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW). There are 15 exams including a final case study which is geared to put everything you’ve learnt into one exam. At PwC you sign up to a three-year training contract with a peer group of around 15 people so there is lots of support and camaraderie to get you through the process. The exams are tough, but very rewarding. Qualifying as an accountant gives you a huge sense of accomplishment and is also financially beneficial.
Uni attended? University of Edinburgh Course undertaken? English Literature What did you want to be where you were 8? Marine Biologist Favourite way to relax? Chilling at home listening to my record collection Given an unlimited budget, what’s the first thing you’d buy? A holiday with family and friends to help me decide what to do with the money.
What do you do on an average day? My days are extremely varied which is why I enjoy my job. Every day is different and there is no set format. For example, at the time of writing, I’m in Zurich getting ready for a client meeting, but tomorrow I have a meeting about recruitment and will be reviewing the planning for an upcoming audit. I’m also just back from a summer secondment in New York working on an anti-money laundering remediation project, so no day is “average.”
best advice I got was to treat an interview as a two-way process; of course you want to be successful, but at the interview ask yourself; could I see myself working here? Do I like the atmosphere? The people? The opportunities? Think of what is important to you and make sure the company you are interviewing for can deliver on those things.
What is your next step? Many companies prepare accounts to 31 December. January to April is when the audits for these take place, so that will be a fairly busy time. Medium-term, I’d like to complete a longer secondment somewhere. PwC is a global network and has offices all over the world, so the opportunities really are endless. There are opportunities for short-term (months) or two-year secondments. New York, London, Singapore, Australia, Canada, Boston - take your pick. What advice would you give to yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now? Think about your career choices early and do your research as it’s a big decision. The

FINNERTY 22 ASSOCIATE AT EY
Uni attended? University of York Course undertaken? Economics BSc What did you want to be when you were 8? Footballer Favourite way to relax? Sports / new TV series. Favourite place to eat in Guernsey? China Red. What’s your favourite possession? My laptop or my phone as both holds my iTunes collection.
What made you choose the company you work for? I wanted to develop my understanding of the business world whilst gaining a respected qualification, and starting my career in accountancy is a great way to achieve both those goals. During my first year at university I approached EY to see if I could gain some work experience. They responded quickly and were flexible with dates which made the process straightforward. EY’s work experience programme reinforced that it was the right career for me. I applied soon afterwards which took away the stress of applying for jobs in my final year of university which meant that I could focus on my studies and still had time for socialising! What sort of professional training do you take? I am studying for a professional qualification, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (known as ICAS), which is celebrating its 160th anniversary this year. The qualification takes three years to complete and provides you with a broad business knowledge – as well as focussing on accounting, tax, auditing and financial reporting, we study organisational structures, marketing, business strategy, business law and much more. ICAS also review the syllabus annually to ensure that it is up-to-date with current issues. Once I become a qualified accountant I will have so many career options and the added bonus is that ICAS is a globally recognised qualification.
would be a fantastic way to gain more technical and client exposure and experience working life in a big city. One of our audit executives recently transferred to EY New York which has shown me it can be a reality and something I can aim for. What advice would you give to yourself as a graduate considering the experience you have now? My advice would be to maximise on the opportunities, explore different career options at university and participate in as many campus activities and events as possible. Spend time researching firms; find out if their values and the opportunities on offer match what you are looking for. Plan ahead, early applications for work experience, internships and trainee positions will take away the pressure. Finally be opened minded and explore different career options, many students believe that a degree in accountancy or a business-related subject is necessary to apply for a graduate trainee position in audit. At EY, they’re more focussed on you as an individual and what skills you can bring to the team. If you want to find out more about EY and our training or work experience programmes, or just some career guidance, please approach us as we are always happy to have an informal chat.
What do you do on an average day? There really is not an average day at EY! Despite the myth, it isn’t number crunching at your desk all day - from day one there has been a huge variety in my work. For example I could be in the office or at a client’s site, and occasionally that could be off-island. One of the parts of my role I enjoy the most is working in diverse teams with very different clients as I’m meeting new people all the time. Everyone brings their unique background and experiences to the team. EY’s strong teaming culture has really helped with my personal development. What is your next step? My next steps are to finish my ICAS exams and become a qualified accountant and also to gain more experience and take on a more senior role within the audit teams. In the future I would be interested in a secondment to another EY office, perhaps London or New York. This

PWC CHANNEL ISLANDS HAS WELCOMED A HOST OF NEW FACES TO ITS OFFICES IN JERSEY AND GUERNSEY.
A
s part of this year’s ‘Class of 2014’, the Jersey and Guernsey offices of PwC have welcomed a total of 18 new recruits in Guernsey and 19 in Jersey. The new faces, who are all now embarking on a three year training programme to gain professional qualifications, reflect a wealth of home-grown talent, including school leavers who excelled at A-Levels and local graduates with strong degrees. Also amongst the new intake is a number of high quality undergraduates on industry placements and graduates from the UK, Bulgaria, Prague and Pakistan, further enhancing the diversity of the Channel Islands firm. In Guernsey, of the 18 new recruits, ten are local individuals: Alex Masterton, who was educated at Guernsey Grammar School and graduated from Bath University in Economics this year; Amelia Ingrouille, educated at The Ladies’ College, who recently graduated from Sussex University also in Economics; Callum McCutcheon, who was educated at Elizabeth College, studied at Robinson College in Cambridge, graduating in Accounting & Finance

this year; Another Elizabethan, Callum Wrench, who studied at Exeter University, graduating in Economics in 2011 and has since worked as a Business Development Manager at Hanson Wade in London; Chester Homan, who was educated at Oundle School in Peterborough, studied at Nottingham University, graduating in Biology this year; Emma-Louise Sarre, who completed A-Levels in English Literature, History, Maths and RE at The Ladies’ College this year; Lauren Ogier, also of The Ladies College, who recently took A-Levels in Maths, English Literature, Psychology and Biology; Lucy Morris, also educated at The Ladies’ College, who studied at Durham University graduating in Geography this year; Sean Brehaut, who completed A-Levels in Maths, Business Studies, Economics and Philosophy & Ethics at Guernsey Grammar School this year and Tristan Brown, another Grammarian, who graduated from King’s College London in Maths last year. A further eight individuals move to Guernsey: Ahlea Page from Manchester, a Management graduate from the University of Warwick; Ben Davis from Bridgend, who studied Accounting & Finance at Swansea University; Londoner Giles Dean, who is on a placement year in the tax team and is currently studying Economics and Finance
at Newcastle University; Gus Baryah from Bristol, who graduated in Accounting & Finance from Warwick University this year; Janine Scholfield, originally from Chester, who studied at Bangor University, graduating in Accounting & Finance this year; Jordan Steel, from Dagenham, who studied at the University of York, graduating in Economics this year; Rositsa Marinova, a graduate from Sofia University in European Studies in 2013 and Will Greer, from Swindon, who attended Swansea University, graduating in Economics this year. So, lots of new arrivals to celebrate, complemented by the fact that earlier this year, PwC nationally was included in the Sunday Times ‘Best Big Companies to Work For’ survey and the only ‘Big Four’ firm to be ranked in the top 25. It is also a record-breaking eleventh year that PwC has been ranked number one in the Times ‘Top 100 Graduate Employer of the Year’ list, as well as retaining the Times ‘Graduate Employer of Choice in Accounting’ for a 15th consecutive year, continuing its run as the only employer ever to win this award.

T
he words “I should have worked harder at school” kept ringing in my ears as I depressed the large ‘D’ button on the dashboard, putting the car into drive. I’d driven a Vantage before, but this was no ordinary Aston Martin - this was the N430! An incredible vehicle that packs a 4.7 litre V8 engine and will propel you from 0-62 in a sharp 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 190mph!

Noting that the car was equipped with the Clubsport graphics pack and what seemed like a very low front carbon fibre splitter and diffuser, I approached some threatening looking speed humps at the back of Admiral Park at very low speed. Having not caused any excessive damage to the car, we were off. THE RIDE To begin with, I decided to drive the car in automatic to get a feel for its gear ratios. I tucked myself snuggly into the race inspired Kevlar® seats, gently nudging the accelerator with my suede driving loafers, which were chosen especially for the occasion. 0-25 was instantaneous and reminded me to check the brakes. I took comfort that the car had ventilated grooved disc brakes, anti-lock braking system (ABS), Dynamic stability control (DSC), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), emergency brake assist (EBA) and traction control (TC), all of which are designed to slow you down safely – and they work extremely well. It is fair to say that I didn’t push the Aston Martin N430 to its limits through Saturday morning traffic along Les Banques, but even at low speed it was a spectacular drive. The handling was crisp and responsive, giving a very direct ride which one would expect from such a marque. In automatic mode, the accelerator takes some getting used to – it demands your attention and I was assured that Aston Martin driving courses (offered by Gaydon HQ) educate budding track drivers on how to best feather the accelerator to achieve best performance. The stiff chassis and low
race-like driving position adds to the feeling of precision when taking a corner. This car forces you to engage with it on multiple levels. At high revs, the sports exhaust produced some (dare I say it) ‘Ferrari-esque’ notes coming from the rear emitter, ensuring that the driver is immersed in the experience. My favourite thing about the N430 was the noise it produced – the engineers clearly had paid a lot of attention to its proposed demographic. The Aston Martin Vantage sounds like a sports car and isn’t afraid to show off its beautiful voice. The car feels aggressive yet suitably tailored; like a gentrified Mike Tyson, or the roaring MGM lion dressed head to toe in an Armani suit. THE LOOK The designers at Aston face a similar challenge to those at Porsche (with the 911), not wanting to upset their loyal customer base by changing the fundamental styling of the vehicle but wanting to take it forward. To make it more distinguishable as a Clubsport Coupe, the unique ‘ClubSport Graphics Pack’ is a matter of taste. For example, the grille surround, mirror caps, rear diffuser blade and ‘cant rails’ (rooflines) can be painted in the options of green/yellow, blue/red, black/ silver, white/red and silver/white, suggesting that the designers had run out of ideas on how to jazz up the current model. On the model driven, the aforementioned options are painted in black and silver which works well with the additional carbon fibre specifications - giving strong hints that this car would be comfortable on a track with the carbon fibre
weight benefits contributing to a 20kg overall load saving compared to a V8 Vantage. The interior is luxurious yet sporty and the Aston Martin square key in the centre console remains a positive novelty. A minor criticism of the older Astons was that the Satellite Navigation system was temperamental at best; this time the unit is powered by Garmin to ensure that you find your way from home to that great Indian at L’Eree and back. This car competes in the same space as the 911 Carrera S, BMW M6 and Audi R8 providing a very attractive quandary for the discerning customer. As you would expect, Aston Martin offer a wide range of personalisation options, which are carefully prepared by hand to your specification. This model of heritage, refinement and raw power can be yours for £93,812, available at Jacksons. My advice? Work hard at school kids.

THE SUPER-RICH DO THINGS BETTER THAN THE REST OF US. 5-STAR HOTELS, SPEED BOATS AND BANK STATEMENTS THAT REQUIRE MORE PAGES THAN A DISSERTATION. UNDERSTANDABLY THEN, THIS MONTH’S LIST OF THE MOST OPULENT GADGETS ON THE MARKET WILL MAKE THE COMMON MAN SHAKE WITH AN INCREDIBLY BITTER MIX OF JEALOUSY AND SELF-DEPRECATION. However, don’t be discouraged by this list of dream items, and simply remember that they serve only as an inspiration to do better in your professional life. I mean, who wouldn’t want to own a camera that only takes back and white photos? It’s a worrying comment on the state of our society today that people are willing to pay £50,000 on a CD player, when a Walkman can be found online for about £30. In this Americanised culture where outward signs of wealth are
more important than good old English repression, not only would we find Freud rolling in his grave, but we’ve also seen the growth of a market filled with gadgets made specifically for those with about as much budgeting sense as Tony Abbott. For some reason, major companies are now seeing fit to charge what can only be called house prices for things like turntables and USB typewriters, and yet these now useless items are becoming popular.
Regardless of the necessity/practicality of these products, we can’t deny that they exist, as do the people that are willing to buy them, and thus it seems fitting to write about them. So, this month, in more of an exposé than a review, we celebrate and denounce the insanity of the opulent members of society, and their ridiculous wants and false needs.
USB TYPEWRITER
The amount of coding that goes into the software of a tablet is, to the normal, non-engineer or programmer, unbelievable. Simply the keypad, something we take for granted when typing an email or browsing the sites of the internet that only a tablet can do justice, takes months of work. For many, evidently, the greatest way to honour this amount of work is to fork out hundreds of pounds on something that completely negates it. The USB Typewriter is, according to its creator, “a groundbreaking advancement”, although I am loath to call this an advancement, given the first typewriter was created in 1868. Personally, I will never understand the obsession with vintage, however it seems that Jack Zylkin, the mastermind behind this revolutionary product, has found a way to milk every single penny he can out of the hipsters that will undoubtedly find a way of ironically claiming to “hate” modern technology whilst plugging their gleaming iPads into these machines. This ‘groundbreaking’ technology isn’t available in shops yet, but go online to the imaginatively named www. usbtypewriter.com to find them. This product made its way into the list for this month partly because of its representation of a culture that will throw money at anything that makes them seem slightly affluent, but also partly because of its ridiculous price tag. At £510 ($799), the question of value is quickly raised in the mind of any person that realizes this technology is not only pointless, but obsolete. In any case, there’s joy in the fact that the unaffordable price means all of your alternative friends won’t be boasting about the fact he can write “old-school” every time you mention writing an essay.

STEALTH ARCADE TABLE
Now for the one gadget on this list I actually like. This table, despite looking like an avant-garde architect’s wet dream, is the perfect example of the rich living undeniably better lives than the rest of us. Whilst some of us sit around shouting and screaming at the TV, questioning whether life is really worth living when Danny Webber of Accrington Stanley puts a 90th minute goal past you on FIFA, those with money to burn sit at home and quietly enjoy the 60 classic arcade games that are pre-installed on this, although it is probably quite difficult to enjoy Pacman when you’ve drunk so much Veuve Clicquot that you can’t see. The social, competitive element is most likely wasted on a society where every other sentence is gossip, although that may improve the passive-aggressive competition. The Stealth Arcade Table is a steal £2,000, and can be ordered online from many major retailers.

OOHH, AAHH, SPECTACULAR! See in the new year with a bang!
There is nothing like a firework display to top off a joyous celebration. Everyone has a classic favourite, whether it’s the whirling catherine wheel, the banshee with its ear-splitting screech or a gorgeous shimmer of golden rain and it is not humanly possible to write your name in the air with a sparkler and not love it. Starburst Fireworks’ James Bevis has a bevy of fireworks at his disposal and can personalise displays and even choreograph a fireworks to music. James has extensive experience in the firework industry, working with everyone from the Opera House to the British Army, and it’s always a good idea to call in the pros so that you can be super-sure that the display will go off without a hitch.
LEICA M MONOCHROME
What is the point of buying a camera? You want to take pictures of the things that mean something to you, whether they are touching family moments or just semi-blurred pictures of trees that you can put on facebook in order to claim a photography career. There is concurrent theme amongst cameras that have been produced since the mid 1800s, and that is that they can take colour pictures. Colour is one of the main tools the artist (as they call themselves) has in their arsenal, evoking senses and imagery with a simple contrast. However, nowadays it seems that everyone that has a spare £30 can buy a cheap digital camera, change the settings to black and white and throw around phrases like “it captures the darkness of our society” with reckless abandon. Honestly, it’s no wonder so many people are diagnosed as depressed when our world is so often depicted without colour by these fools that feel they need to ‘express’ themselves by removing one of the prominent methods of expression in photography. But I digress. Leica, the company probably most famous for having one of their cameras feature heavily in the teen film Euro Trip, have decided to jump on the dark and brooding bandwagon, and have cut out the overly-strenuous task of changing the settings on your camera by creating a product that only takes black and white photographs, ironically probably cutting out half their target demographic simultaneously given the price of the thing. Who but a person banding money around in order to compensate for a lack of something else would throw $8,000 (£5,000) at something that performs quite literally 1% of the actions any other modern digital camera is capable of? I will end this glowing review with the undying words of Stephen Porges: “Still, I bet this camera is probably fantastic at bringing out the pathos in us all”.

Champagne Supernova, 80 shot barrage, £79.99 Starting with a crackling strobe to triple starbursts, then screeming comets and huge silver palms. This stunning display has that wow-factor that your guests will love. 2. Atom Smasher, multi shot barrage £99.99 61 huge shots of multi coloured units with whistle effects to get you in the spirit for celebrating. The sky will be lit up with colour raining down. This is a truly spectacular display. 3. Big Ben Countdown, 37 shot barrage, £49.99 Designed with NYE specifically in mind this firework crackles and shimmers and razzledazzles its way through the countdown as you locate your lucky partner to share a midnight kiss. 4. Celebration, 55 shot barrage, £89.99 A dazzling NYE barrage designed to impress! Light the fuse, step back and enjoy your own professional display. Showcasing massive starbursts of blues, greens and glitter, beautiful palms, brocades and more starbursts stretching across the night sky. Ends on an intense awe inspiring finale of titanium crackle.
CD PLAYER 069
I’ll keep this one short and sweet. Instead of having this basic CD player, you could have 10 Nissan Versas at $10,000 each, which could, if you felt like it, play 10 CDs at the same time; and it’s rare you see a CD player making the school run.
5. Countdown Finale, 200 shot barrage, £125.00 A big firework with 200 comets in multicolours, with crackle, whistles and ending on a finale of silver comets with time rain. Watch people’s jaws drop to the floor!

I’d encourage people to try MMA not just because of the physical aspect but also because it teaches discipline, honour, respect, loyalty and it helped me channel my own aggression – that’s my own spiritual journey.

or years, the misperception of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) was one of cage fighting with no rules. Times have changed and the sport has evolved with clear rules, weight classes, anti-doping regulations and clear athletic commission policies. MMA is now the fastest growing sport in the world with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) as the world’s biggest franchise being broadcast in over 145 countries to over 800 million TV households worldwide in 28 different languages! For one Guernseyman, the professional MMA dream is coming true. Josh Ozanne has embarked on a journey that has taken him 7,000 miles to the beautiful island of Honolulu in Hawaii where he honed his fight skills with some of the best trainers in the world at the UFC BJ Penn Gym. This trip led to an offer to become a full time professional athlete. Some might expect a stereotypical fighter to be menacing and scary but Josh cuts an unassuming yet steely-eyed figure that talks with passion for his love of MMA.
First off, can you tell us about Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), what it is and how did you get into it? MMA is a full contact sport that allows both striking and grappling, it uses techniques from all of the martial arts and was initially a competition held in the US, which has since developed into a sport. I had seen it on TV and wanted to fight but was not attracted to the traditional arts although I am attracted to their values. Tell us about your journey so far, why Hawaii & how did that trip come about? I’ve started with local shows run by Full Boar Motor Cycle Club in Guernsey & trained with Chris Goldsbrough, Dan Maree and Lee Grant who are a big help. I went to Hawaii with some friends for a holiday; I’d researched the local MMA gyms out there and found the UFC BJ Penn Gym. Rather than enjoying Hawaii’s beaches I hit the gym for eleven days of hard training.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
What has been your favourite fight & why? My last fight against Diego (Granda) at the last ‘Lock-In’ competition. Because I started to show the progression of my skills and for the first time I really relaxed and enjoyed it. What would you say your biggest strengths are, and what’s the thing you need to work on the most? Strengths – power, heart, determination and striking. Weaknesses – I need to work on my grappling.
What are your ultimate goals in MMA and what’s next on your journey? I’ll be heading back to Hawaii and I’m looking forward to further training with some of the best trainers in the world. Following that, fights in the US, then a title! How to you see MMA and combat sports developing in Guernsey and why would you encourage people to try MMA? Mainly through my club Blackrock MMA; which I started to give MMA a base in Guernsey and a way to further my career. I’d encourage people to try MMA not just because of the physical aspect but also because it teaches discipline, honour, respect, loyalty and it helped me channel my own aggression – that’s my own spiritual journey. How do you balance your own training with training others? To be honest, not as well as I’d like! It’s a tough balance and I’m looking to develop a strong Blackrock team. We have some really good youngsters coming through, Tom Schmeidhuber is one to watch and there are plenty of women who are making really good progress and have fights coming up in Jersey.
What’s your favourite strike / submission to use in fight? The roundhouse kick or my left hook! Who is your biggest inspiration and do you have any heroes? Mohammad Ali, Anderson Silva (MMA Fighter – Ultimate Fighting Championship) and currently Conor McGregor (MMA Fighter – Ultimate Fighting Championship). MMA aside, is there anyone you’d like to mention? Yes definitely. Mark Woodard is an MMA Referee and hall of famer. He’s given me a lot of support, guidance and encouragement. Chris Goldsbrough has been a big help with my Jiu-jitsu and my brothers at Full Boar MC. What does it mean to you to be a fighter? It’s about bettering myself as a person, pushing the boundaries and the limits of my body and mind, always testing myself. Tell us something that might surprise us? I used to hate the world and now I love it. Interested in trying MMA or improving your fitness? email: josh@blackrockmma.co.uk www.blackrockmma.co.uk

ast month we were listening to Radio 2 in the office and almost fell off our chairs. The tune dropped on Jo Whiley’s playlist was light years ahead of the other tracks she was showcasing and its name was Shibuya, by an artist called Mura Masa. The track was as intricate as the crossing in Tokyo from which it takes its name (but without the Starbucks). We fell in love immediately and realised something about this special artist to watch in 2015. He comes from Guernsey…
The Vazon-dweller in question also goes by the name Alex Crossan. We were amazed how far he’s come in such a short space of time. Named after a 15th Century Swordsmith, the razorsharp sounds from this composer will definitely leave lifelong scars on your music gland. He’s been sprinting so hard on the sonic treadmill that his musical talent is propelling him into the mainstream music scene – listeners are tripping over themselves to hear the newest sounds from our local boy, amassing an incredible

Soundcloud following of over 30,000 listeners and 10,000+ likes on his Facebook page. So what’s it all about and how is he building such a solid foundation in music? His remixing prowess and ear for a dirty sample is evident in every track (some of which are free for download – go get ‘em) and the Mura Masa sound flicks between chilled out vocals to dirty grind. There are elements of jump-up dancehall and underground bass-shake, all composed to electrify the ears with deft breaks, sublime basslines and a host of noticeable influences that run throughout all of his original tracks. He confesses that Kendrick Lemar, Biggie Smalls and more recent artists such as Jamie Woon have contributed to his style and there is no doubt the effect they have on the final product.
With the digital platforms covered, we’re promised that his live shows are equally as special, incorporating multiinstrumentalism, aggressive sub bass and dance inducing hooks. It’s eclectic, progressive and thoroughly exciting. In fact, it makes me want to go flat out in a dirty basement club with large speakers. Go check Mura Masa now on Facebook and Soundcloud. Show some love by liking the page and you’ll get access to download the Mosh Pit remix and a filthy bass ridden Travi$ Scott Upper Echelon remix for free. You’d be mad foolish if you didn’t!
His forthcoming album, Soundtrack to a Death, is set for a 2015 release and if the existing online material is anything to go by, this young producer is going to be the hottest slice of inspired material in a long time. It seems no genre is safe from Mura Masa, sampling beats and snaps from hiphop, classical and electro. Now, his talent is finally starting to be recognised, having been invited to talk to Huw Stephens on his BBC Radio 1 show last month and paving the way for (we’re sure) a string of radio hits and high profile collaborations in the new year. ones to watch in
2015 With 2014 being a massive year for tunes, 2015 is set to be one helluva year for music and live shows too. Sharing is caring and we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 artists to check out next year. Because we’re kind like that! Brawlers – Made up of members of Castrovalva, Dinosaur Pile-Up, Leftover Crack and Old Romantic Killer Band, Brawlers is a growling beast of a band. It’s high octane pop-driven punk and it’s sure to prick your ears over the next 12 months. Meanwhile – Hailed by the Guardian as the ‘new Prince’, composer Tom Andrews is currently touring Europe with La Roux. If you like multi-instrumental pop-funk with attitude then this is definitely someone to watch.
Raury – With collaborations with the likes of SBTRKT and The Neighbourhood already under his belt and a support slot with Outkast, the new boy on the Hip-Hop block is sure to rock the rap boat in 2015. Ryn Weaver – The 21-year-old singer put her debut single ‘OctaHate’ online back in July of this year and she managed 1.3 million hits in just a month. With Charli XCX and Michael Angelakos (Passion Pit) pulling the studio strings, and Jessie Ware singing her praises, it’s no surprise her sound is going to be big next year. They’ve been growing from strength to strength for a while now, having had some serious radio attention over the past few months. Their electro-pop belters are sure to dominate the festival circuit next summer and will
surely reap the rewards of the BBC Sound of 2015 too! Tove Lo – A powerful Swedish pop persona, Tove Lo has already started world domination in Europe and the US with her brash alt-pop sounds. Her debut album ‘Queen Of The Clouds’ is set for a UK release in 2015. Watch this space! Wolf Alice – If you’ve been lucky enough to see them perform in 2014 you’ll know that their fusion of grunge, indie, pop and folk is about to blow up with their impending 2015 album release. It’s going to be good, you know it is! Joey Bada$$ - His mega mixtapes have been flooding the internet for some time now, but the heavy hip-hop merchant has an imminent album release and everyone is waiting to hear what he’s bringing to the table. Polish
off the throne, this guy might be the new King in town. Heyrocco – They’ve got cool names (literally) and an infectious sound that fuses the likes of The Cure, Weezer, Mudhoney with a pinch of Broken Social Scene. Famed for their wild live shows, these guys might be a festival gem to remember. Blood Diamonds – He’s mastered the remix release for the likes of Chvrches, Kiesza, Ellie Goulding and Kendrick Lamar and next year he’s going to surely build on his collection. Having already produced tracks for Grimes, this guy will no doubt have a big presence on the airwaves in 2015. Check out all of the artists featured on Soundcloud.com or follow the links on their band websites!
