back-smackingly manly welcome back to all our familiar faces and any new readers. You hold in your hands the latest, and greatest, offering from the Gallery staff: the Homme edition. In this edition we’ll be celebrating all things male.

What makes a real man, you ask? Well, you’ll find our thoughts on that subject within, along with male beauty features and fragrance guides, stag-do planners and write-ups on gadgetry and boys toys. We’ve tried (as always) to provide a refreshing mixture of comedy, information, and awesomeness, and of course we haven’t neglected our focus on local life. If you’re curious what men get up to in the channel, or want to read about the Guernsey marathon, jump right in. A final word of caution: this tome contains testosterone. There’s every chance that, as you peruse our guide to the modern man, you’ll be overcome by the powerful pheromones of our contributors and, like a Spartan rising from the past, be transformed into a myth like figure of male beauty. CONTRIBUTORS THIS MONTH WE ASKED OUR CONTRIBUTORES A THEMED QUESTION... If you could be any male in history who would it be and why?

JASON SHAMBROOK I would like to be the man who was sitting in the pub with Bill Gates when he said, “I am thinking of designing some computer software stuff, what do you think?” I would say, “Your wasting your time Bill, do you fancy another pint?” How we would laugh in years to come!

great ability to find humour in every situation. He worked as an actor in his early years, which I always wanted to do, and became a successful author – another ambition of mine. If his writing is anything to go by, he had a lot of fun and made some great friends along the way. I can’t think of any life I’d rather have. NICK MOLLET I would be God - I could control my own destiny and that of everyone else and turn back the clock and prevent the unnecessary suffering of all those who have not deserved it throughout history!

TONY BRASSELL Neil Armstrong - to walk on the moon must have been an unbelievably awesome experience. To look back at Earth and fully appreciate how small we really are in the great scheme of things - just amazing.

THEO LEWORTHY Maybe Jesus of Nazareth. He could do awesome party tricks and liked a drink, so I reckon it would be a lot of fun. Also, he hung around with the guys all the time and mixed with women of ill repute. He came back from the dead, and zombies are cool. Plus, he was a carpenter, and I’ve never been very handy around the house; it would be cool to be able to put up my own shelves and stuff. And if anybody gave me any sh*t, I could just tell my dad on them.

CAROLINE MAUGER I’m not sure I’d like to be male at all but I’d have to say one of the disciples - any except Judas! because it must have been fascinating to spend time with Jesus. KAY WORTHINGTON I would have been Charles Dickens. Although his childhood was far from idyllic, his life experiences were all used as material for his books. He was such an inspirational writer; as a journalist he was able to expose some of the more terrible social injustices to a much wider audience. My crowning moment as Charles Dickens, would have been to give public readings. (Apparently he expended so much energy in these reading that this could have hastened his death – imagine being in the audience, listening to the famous “death of Nancy” recitation…..) I wish I was able to write like him!

RICHARD BROMLEY Gene Kelly. He is one of the greatest dancers this world has seen, revolutionised the way dance was filmed in movies and had the most amazing work ethic being known as a perfectionist. He starred in and choreographed over 45 musical movies, and managed to make dancing and musicals masculine! Legend. NICOLE BROMLEY I would have to be Frank Sinatra because he was a true entertainer in his day and still is now. How exciting would it be to see what really went on during The Rat Pack days in Vegas! I love that genre of music and even danced to ‘Love &

EMMA FAWSON If I had the chance, I’d love to be Jerome K. Jerome (2 May 1859 – 14 June 1927), author of Three Men in A Boat . He was a man with the

KATE LISTER Sir Tim Berners-Lee “the quiet guru” who invented the world wide web. Sir Tim is perhaps the man who changed the world more than anyone else in the last 100 years. His invention has impacted our lives in virtually every way and, despite this, he remains modest and idealistic. He has not cashed in on his invention but continues to support it in various ways. In 2009 he founded the World Wide Web Foundation, its mission is “to advance One Web that is free and open”, “to expand the Web’s capability and robustness” and “to extend the Web’s benefits to all people on the planet”. Pretty ambitious, I think you’ll agree! FOO PEARSON I would be Keith Floyd as he lived (and died) doing what he loved, travelling the world and cooking up a storm! Also (like me), he enjoyed the occasional tipple. Hic. DANIELLE STONEBRIDGE David Attenborough. He bought the wild to all of us, he made us aware of the rest of the world and its native wildlife, gorillas, wolfs, insects! His life is so rich with incredible experiences and he remains humble about it.

WHAT IN THE SEVEN HELLS HAPPENED TO MASCULINITY? I REMEMBER A TIME NOT TOO LONG AGO WHEN MEN WERE MEN. LOOK AT THE ICONS OF YESTERYEAR: SEAN CONNERY, TOM SELLECK, CHUCK NORRIS, CLARK GABLE. LANTERN JAWED MEN THAT SPOKE IN BARITONES AND HAD BODY HAIR; MEN WHO EITHER SHAVED OR GREW A BEARD; MEN WHO SWEAT PURE TESTOSTERONE, USUALLY AFTER EATING STEAK, HITTING SOMETHING EVIL, AND MAKING PASSIONATE LOVE TO A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. CONTRAST THAT WITH TODAYS IMAGE OF MASCULINITY: JUSTIN BEIBER.

hat the hell? When did Justin Beiber become a better male icon than Tom Selleck? Who do I write to about this? Who’s in charge? The sad answer to these questions is: no-one. There is no-one to complain to about the unsightly pressures of back waxing, or being reprimanded for a deep booming voice. There’s an unquestionable gender-crises going on at the moment. And I have my own (poorly researched and oversimplified) theories as to why.

One of which is to make women less attracted to the masculine men that have been sought out as mates in our past, and more attracted to feminine men who seem like caring providers. There’s nothing inherently wrong with this, of course. But it could provide a very straightforward explanation for the softening jawlines, waxed chests, and coquettish smirks that seem to be appearing on the deluge of nameless boybands my friend’s daughters are obsessed by.

Men have been slow to fit into a changing world. There was a time when being manly was measured in how much whisky you drank by lunch time, how many men you’d knocked out by dinner time, and how many women you’d bedded by bed time. Today, however, the cultural lens has shifted, and if you tried to live like that you’d be getting lectures about liver disease and STD’s in your prison cell.

So there you go. It’s womens’ fault. I also think that, if social pressure exists on women to look good, a similar pressure has always been tied to men in the area of being capable. A successful woman was pretty and quiet. A successful man was wealthy and capable. But today, very few men are the sole breadwinners in their family. In fact, it’s incredibly difficult now for one wage to support a family. Additionally, practicality, and practical vocations, are sadly underemphasised in the modern education system. We have a generation now coming to adulthood that is more adept with spreadsheets than saws.

I’m not sure masculinity ever had anything to do with that stuff anyway. I think there was more boozing and fighting in less enlightened times because, well, they were less enlightened. But the sex thing, well there’s something in that. Certainly one of the things that is integral to masculinity is a sexual interest in femininity (I’m not saying homosexuals can’t be manly… I’m just painting in very broad strokes here… it’s a short article). So, I wonder how women’s changing preferences have influenced the girlification of manliness? The biggest thing, I think, is the widespread popularity of the pill. The contraceptive pill is a wonderful drug that has given many women new levels of social freedom. It’s the most popular prescription BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

There’s nothing wrong with this move in identity away from traditional, practical, stereotypes. Except for the fact that we haven’t really replaced them with anything. Women have done a far better job of redefining their gender identity in the modern world than men have. Subsequently, many men hold on to an archaic stereotype of masculinity that they do not fulfil. I have compensated by growing a beard and drinking a lot.

GUERNSEY STATIC AIR DISPLAY WEDNESDAY 12TH SEPTEMBER Meet the Pilots is a great opportunity for the members of the public to get up close to some of the participating aircraft and to speak to the pilots first hand. The event was held at the Guernsey Airport on Wednesday 12th September and gave guests a great opportunity to get up close to some of the aircraft taking part in the main display program. The Guernsey Static air display is part of the Royal Air Forces Association’s air display event, which includes the Red arrow display which took place on Thursday 13th September over the east coast of the island. There has been an air display in the island since the late 1960’s and once again in 2012 the RAFA (Guernsey) Branch was responsible for organizing the annual display.

OAKLEY SPIN 2012 SUNDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER The Oakley Waterman Caravan Foundation provides respite accommodation on two Haven campsites in England for children suffering from life threatening illnesses to have quality time with their families. The annual upkeep of the caravans is £10,000 and so continued support and fundraising is vital to enable to good work of the foundation to continue. There was a phenomenal turn out to the Oakley Waterman spin on Sunday 16th September starting at 2pm at Salerie Car Park. All bikes, trikes, quads and scooters were welcome. The event was organised by FULL BOAR MC and kindly marshaled by HOG and SARNIANS MCC. This event helped to collect over £2,000 pounds towards this fantastic cause, thanks for all those who attended and donated.

The selected works come from the diverse art courses delivered across the island’s further education establishments. Spanning a wide range of arts disciplines from clay work to woodwork and sculpture, images of New York City in acrylic paint on canvas to charcoal on wood, the process offers Guernsey students a chance to display their work to a different audience and experience being involved in an exhibition, many for the first time outside the confines of their schools. The exhibition runs from Thursday 20th September at the greenhouse, with free admittance and is a chance for everyone to find out what the students’ inspirations were and what they are planning to do with their talents in the future.

FOR A CHARITY THAT WAS ONLY FOUNDED EARLIER THIS YEAR, MALE UPRISING GUERNSEY, (MUG) HAS GOT OFF TO A GREAT START. MUG WAS SET UP TO INCREASE AWARENESS ABOUT MALE CANCERS AND RAISE MONEY TO HELP SUPPORT THOSE IN NEED. THEY’VE ALREADY RAISED OVER £50,000.00 AND HAVE SET THEMSELVES THE TARGET OF RAISING £250, 000.00 OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS.

“37,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed each year in the UK,” explains MUG founder, Trevor Kelham.“ Prostate cancer is our primary focus for 2012 with bowel and testicular following in 2013 and 2014 respectively.” The charity has been quick to put their aims into action. Working with Prostate Cancer Guernsey they have recently helped Guernsey’s Urology Department at The Medical Specialist Group buy vital scanning equipment so they can offer state of the art care for patients having keyhole surgery for prostate cancer. The MUG team works closely with the health service and has been lucky to get great support from many of the island’s businesses. Anyone keen to help support the charity can get involved with some of the events planned for 2012 “In October we have The Dominion Fund Management MUG Bike Ride; next month we’ll be celebrating Mugvember and we’ve got an amazing collection of sports memorabilia to auction as well in November.” says Trevor.

PROSTATE CANCER - WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR

Owen Cole, Consultant Urologist explains some of the warning signs for prostate cancer and what to do if you are worried. 3 Needing to urinate more often than normal, especially at night. 3 Delayed or slowed start when needing to urinate. 3 Having an unusually weak stream of urine. 3 Straining when urinating. 3 Having difficulty emptying your bladder. 3 Pain when ejaculating or urinating. 3 Pain or lump in the back passage (like you have sat on a golf ball) 3 Pain or stiffness in your lower back or hips.

HOW CAN YOU GET CHECKED?

ut it’s not just about money, the charity is dedicated to raising awareness of the three main male cancers – testicular, prostate and bowel cancers and the good news is that with early detection and advances in treatment, the prognosis is good for those diagnosed. Mr Owen Cole, Guernsey’s Consultant Urologist comments: “Early detection and improved treatment means that whilst incidence of prostate cancer is increasing, survival rates are improving.” Almost 43, 000 men in the UK are diagnosed with male-specific cancers each year with prostate cancer being the most common. One of the big hurdles to overcome is mens’ reluctance to get a niggling worry checked out by the doctor. It’s all too easy to ignore signs like blood in the urine or a dull ache in the groin and that’s what MUG wants to change. From ‘running’ the Guernsey Marathon dressed as large blue mugs, to performing a unique version of Swan Lake, the charity’s supporters are not shy when it comes to spreading the message about male cancers. Guernsey FC has even got involved, the whole team got themselves checked and proudly wore MUG t-shirts in a pre-match warm-up earlier in the year.

If you have any symptoms or concerns speak with your doctor. Your doctor may carry out a digital rectal examination to feel your prostate and organise a blood test. The blood test is checking for your level of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in your blood, your doctor will explain this to you and what it means.

Dan Collins, one of the charity’s trustees knows from first-hand experience how important it is to see a doctor if you’re worried. “Early detection of testicular cancer probably saved my life,” explains Dan whose cancer is in remission, “I blamed the swelling I found on rugby but thankfully my wife nagged me to visit the doctor and a diagnosis quickly followed. I was lucky, my doctor is confident of a complete recovery but if I had waited before seeing the doctor it would have been a very different story. I now know that testicular cancer affects younger men, typically between their teens and mid-forties, so it’s even more important that we check

Million pound lottery tickets now available as part of impromptu syndicates

Luna Bar and Fusion Nightclub staff has chosen the Guernsey ADHD Support Group as their charity partner for 2012/13.

The nightclub’s first fundraising project for the group is already underway. Staff will be selling Fusion wrist bands for £1 on the door of the club over the next few weekends with all proceeds going to the ADHD Support Group.

Islanders can now participate in the Les Bourgs Hospice Million Pound Lottery by becoming part of an impromptu syndicate. The lottery, which is aiming to raise the last £400,000 of the Les Bourgs Hospice’s Redevelopment Appeal target of £4 million, has just over 3,000 tickets left to sell ahead of the October draw. “Sales haven’t gone as well as we had hoped and so we are looking at ways in which we can open up the chance of winning to everyone,” said chairman of the Friends of Les Bourgs Jack Honeybill. The tickets, which cost £300, have been available to syndicates but until now, it has been the responsibility of one of the syndicate to collate the members and purchase the ticket. It is now possible to become part of an impromptu syndicate with others and win up to £100,000. ‘We are conscious that not all islanders are able to afford the cost of a ticket individually and may not have had opportunity to join a syndicate. This new approach will provide members of the public with the chance to participate in this exciting draw by joining with other islanders to form impromptu syndicates. With just 5,000 tickets being sold, the odds of winning a life changing sum of money are very good,’ said Mr Honeybill. ‘All of the profits will go to the hospice, which we know is something loved by everyone in the Bailiwick, and so it will be simply amazing to reach the Redevelopment Appeal target and make some islanders very rich at the same time.’ To make tickets more accessible to islanders, they will now be on sale at Les Bourgs Hospice on Sundays from 10am until 1pm and parking will be available from Rue du Tertre. Tickets will continue to be sold at NatWest in High Street between 10am and 2pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, at Les Bourgs shop on the Bridge from 10am until 2pm on Mondays and Thursdays and until 4.30pm every other day and at Le Friquet Garden Centre from 10am until 2pm on Saturdays. ‘We are extremely grateful to the many volunteers who have kindly given up their time to sell tickets. This wouldn’t be possible without their generosity and without the continued support of islanders,’ said Mr Honeybill.

The nightclub and bar staff, and owner Adam Burroughs, launched the search for a charity partner in June and 18 local charities applied. After a presentation evening where four short-listed charities spoke to the staff about their work, staff decided the ADHD Support Group would benefit the most from the partnership. The ADHD Support Group is a small local charity which supports local families affected by ADHD. The group helps to raise awareness of the condition, provides resources, information and emotional support for families and regularly organises for specialist guest speakers from the UK to visit the island to give advice. ADHD Support Group chairman, Karen Garnham, said: “We are over the moon that staff at Luna and Fusion has chosen the ADHD Support Group as its charity partner. “There is a big job to do in helping families living with ADHD and providing resources, information and experts for those families as well as working with schools and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health teams to ensure we are helping these children realise their full potential. Fusion’s involvement, both in terms of helping us to fund-raise and raise awareness is going to be invaluable and we’re looking forward to working with their team of motivated staff to achieve our goals.” Mr Burroughs said: “So many worthwhile causes applied for the partnership and it was really difficult to whittle them down to a short-list. I wanted to make sure that staff had the final decision about the chosen charity partner as it was so important for them to be fully engaged and enthusiastic about the chosen cause.” “It was a unanimous decision that the ADHD Support Group should be our charity partner for the next year as staff felt they could add real value to the charity through raising funds and organising events for the group.” “The business will work to raise funds as well as donate money to the group and Luna and Fusion staff will also be given

LOCAL CHARITY BENEFITS FROM ERNST & YOUNG CYCLE CHALLENGE A 900 mile cycle challenge from St Malo to Nice via Geneva, has raised £2,800 for the Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society (Sands) Guernsey Branch. The team of four from Ernst & Young’s Guernsey office covered around 200 miles per day in the first leg from St Malo to Geneva with the remaining 300 mile journey to Nice climbing over mountain passes that regularly appear in the Tour de France, including the Col du Telegraph and Col du Galibier. The route took the cyclists across the highest paved road in Europe (Cime de la Bonette) before finishing in Nice in the south of France. The Guernsey team were Transactions Manager Chris Bold, Assurance Manager Tim Nicolle, Tax Consultant Iain Pinnock and Audit Executive David Mosley. Chris Bold said. ‘It was a punishing ride, but the pain and effort was worth it. In the end we raised a total of £2,800. It is now going to a much-needed local cause which has provided invaluable support to friends of Ernst & Young’s colleagues and is therefore very close to our hearts.’ Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death) Guernsey is part of a nation-wide network of groups which exist to provide support and care throughout individual and group sessions for those who have suffered the devastating loss of a baby within the first 28 days of its life. Tania Shires, co-ordinator of the Guernsey Sands branch said; ‘The money received from Ernst & Young will greatly assist us in running regular meetings where people can meet others who have suffered similar experiences, within a supportive environment. It is also hoped that we will soon be able to set up a dedicated phone number that people can call if they want to talk to a Sands befriender in Guernsey. Some may call him a special effects expert rather than a film director, and the same may also say that he can only get the emotional range of a wooden chair out of his actors, but the facts remain that, love him or hate him, he is undoubtedly the king of mega-budget special effect driven Hollywood blockbusters. He is the man behind big-budget action films like Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, Pearl Harbour and most recently the Transformers series. Bay's interest in action films came to him at an early age. As a boy he taped some firecrackers onto a toy train and filmed the explosion with his parents 8mm camera, which unsurprisingly drew the attention of the local fire department. His first taste of professional film making came when he was 15 when he became an intern for George Lucas on Raiders of the Lost Ark, where he filled in Storyboard art. Soon after he decided he wanted to become a film director, and after graduating from Wesleyan University he started directing commercials and music videos for Propaganda Films. While there he directed commercials for Coca-Cola as well as the infamous campaign of 'Got Milk?' advertisements. During this time he also directed music videos for stars such as Tina Turner, Donny Osmond, Lionel Ritchie and Meat Loaf. It was a music video for the latter, 'I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)', which turned producer Jerry Bruckheimer's head who then selected Bay to direct his first feature in 1995, Bad Boys. Since then Michael Bay has become the industry standard on big-budget film making with his films grossing a combined total of more than three billion dollars worldwide. Love him or hate him, he is one of the most commercially successful directors of the 21st century.

Frankenweenie

Sequel to the 2008 hit film from French producer Luc Besson, comes another slice of Euro-American action. While on a trip to Istanbul, Bryan Mills (Neeson), an ex-CIA operative, has a happy reunion with his ex-wife Lenore (Janssen) and daughter Kim (Grace). That is until a vengeful gangster kidnaps Lenore in retaliation for his son's murder in the first film. Bryan is once again forced to put his 'particular set of skills' to good use and rescue his ex-wife, leaving a bloody wake in his path. The original was a hit with audiences and critics alike and Taken 2 is sure to meet expectations.

Tim Burton's newest animated feature, Frankenweenie is a black and white stopmotion animation film about a young scientist named Victor Frankenstein (Tahan) who brings his recently deceased pet dog, Sparky (Welker) back to life. Victor tries to hide his creation, but Sparky escapes and unintentionally causes havoc. Based upon Burton's own 1982 short film Vincent, this is Burton's return to animation after 2005's The Corpse Bride, and carries on his animated background which includes films such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and 9. Certain to be filled with Burton's trademark gothic and goofy style.

The latest instalment of the computer animated franchise from DreamWorks animation, the Madagascar series has been going on a bit of a world tour with Madgascar 4 expect to be based in South America. The whole gang returns but on their way back to New York find themselves stranded in Europe. Pursued by fanatical Animal Control officers, the gang join a group of circus animals on their bid to get home, making some friends, and enemies, along the way to save the town from a curse which has blighted his home.

Daniel Craig returns as James Bond in the 23rd instalment of the series, which sees Bond in trouble after a disastrous operation in Istanbul. After MI6 agents' identities are leaked on the internet, M dispatches Bond to track down Raoul Silva (Bardem) the dangerous villian lniked with both of the attacks. Rumoured to be Judi Dench's last appearance as M, and with Raoul Silva touted to become as infamous as Gold Finger or Scaramanga, Skyfall is being hailed as one of the most memorable and thrilling Bond instalments of recent years.

Rocky

The fourth and latest instalment of the Rambo franchise, John Rambo returns after a 20 year absence to rescue a group of Christian missionaries after they are captured by the military regime in Burma. More bloodthirsty and violent than ever, Rambo has more deaths than the first three films combined. Rambo himself manages to dispatch a whopping 113 bad guys! A particularly gruesome scene that comes to mind is when Rambo tears out a man's throat with his bare hands, and the climactic battle when he slaughters dozens of Burmese soldiers with a mounted .50 calibre machine gun. Violent and gruesome, but awesome.

This psychological thriller garnered mixed reviews upon release, but after strong DVD sales has since become a cult favourite. Edward Norton plays the unnamed everyman narrator who befriends Tyler Durden (Pitt), who, out of frustration from their consumerist lifestyles, form a an underground fight club. Things get out of hand as fight clubs are founded across the country and become an anarchistic revolutionary group dubbed "Project Mayhem" under Durden's leadership. With a truly surprising twist, this gritty thriller is intelligent but entertaining all the same.

The film which turned Sylvester Stallone into a star and arguably one the best sports film of all time. Rocky Balboa (Stallone), a part-time loan shark enforcer and failing boxer, gets a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship held by Apollo Creed (Weathers), who was partly inspired by boxing legend Muhammad Ali. Rocky's quest to 'go the distance' with Creed is paralleled with his blossoming but awkward romance with Adrian (Shire). Inspirational, gripping, at points sentimental but all the while enthralling, Rocky is a rags-to-riches story which delivers on all fronts, becoming a cultural phenomenon and iconic in its own right.

BOOK CORNER Somehow I didn’t feel comfortable about recommending Books For Men, as the whole point of literature is that it can take us to different places and times as well as – perhaps most importantly – into the psyche of other people. It can be enlightening to see the world through the eyes of someone who isn’t just a fictional version of ourselves. So the team has chosen some great books with memorable male characters – to be enjoyed by both hommes and femmes. words | Caroline Mauger

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger Holden Caulfield isn’t what you’d call a male role model, but he’s certainly an unforgettable character. A 17-yearold dropout who has just been kicked out of his fourth school, Holden’s disaffected by everything and everyone he considers ‘phony’, like the headmaster impressed by parents’ wealth and the roommate who pretends to be something he isn’t to score with girls. I read this book as a teenager and again as an adult, and Holden affected me in different ways. Salinger captures the essence of the teenage feeling of isolation, and more recently I just wanted to take care of the boy who, for all his cynicism, is desperately lonely in an uncaring world. The Dice Man

by Luke Rhinehart This controversial cult classic was first published in 1971 but still has relevance today. Written by George Cockcroft under the guise of his alter ego, Luke Rhinehart, the book poses as a work of non-fiction, apparently written as an autobiographical insight by a successful New York psychoanalyst. Rhinehart rolls a die to decide which course of action he should take. Little by little, he hands his life over to decisions made by roll of the die. The result is a hilarious, amoral rampage as he infects others with his ideas and injects a pattern of chaos into the order of his urbane, successful world. (Melissa Mitchell, PR/Marketing)

A Life by Claire Tomalin Charles Dickens is very much an ‘homme’ of the moment. Claire Tomalin’s biography goes further than any other in examining life events which shaped Dickens’ experiences and knowledge. Dickens had a difficult youth and this perhaps inspired his life-long interest in the deserving underdog and matters of social reform. However, despite having ten children there was much trouble in the Dickens household: he risked scandal by his long and secret association with a young actress, and his bitter separation from his wife. Dickens triumphed over adversity by achieving multinational literary acclaim and wealth from very poor beginnings and a curtailed education. Further inspiration to us all? (John Hollis, Finance)

A Wanted Man by Lee Child Cool headed Jack Reacher has an uncanny ability to know what time it is without consulting a clock, drinks copious amounts of coffee and often fails to answer questions. ‘Reacher said nothing’ is a recurring line in the series, of which A Wanted Man is the 17th, all bestsellers worldwide. Reacher finds himself in Virginia thanks to the intriguing voice of a woman he’s only spoken to on the phone. He’s picked up by three strangers and within minutes it becomes clear they’re all lying—about everything—and then they run into a police roadblock. There’s been an incident, and the cops are looking for the bad guys. You’ll have to read it to discover how Reacher gets out of this one! (Alpha Wearing, The Press Book Shop)

UPDATE The second Guernsey Literary Festival is over, and what a fantastic event it was. We had a really packed programme and tried hard to make sure there was something to appeal for everyone. The big names – Michael Morpurgo, Roger McGough, Carol Ann Duffy, Marina Lewycka and Louis de Bernières – were every bit as engaging as we hoped. It was wonderful to hear the background behind their books and to hear them read their own work. This year we had a business breakfast with financial journalist Hamish McRae, and a number of events which looked into the future of publishing as technology continues to change the way we buy and read books. Workshops were an amazing opportunity for budding writers to get advice and feedback. Matthew Hall advised on structuring crime fiction and William Ryan on historical fiction, whilst Chuma Nwokolo focused on short stories. It was also great to hear from emerging talents like Rosa RankinGee, Jeff Norton and Colin Grant. I hope that, like me, you got a lot out of the Festival and now have a lovely collection of signed books to get stuck into! Thanks to everyone who attended the events, it couldn’t have happened without your support and enthusiasm. We’ll be back in May 2014, but in the meantime Book Corner will continue, thanks to the fantastic feedback we’ve had from so many of you bookworms.

I want to talk about men. Not man, not mankind, but men. We men, we are tribal. As individuals we may be lucky enough to be surrounded by our tribal kinsfolk, or be forced to stand alone amidst a sea of other tribes, but our tribes are our breeds. We are breeds of men.

It is the bastardised child of two particular breeds I want to discuss. Two fathers; one a real historically authentic creature, and the other, a mutated character, a sub-breed that has evolved out of the modern world.

There has always been the Geezer, a man inherently drawn towards contact sports involving a ball of some shape or other, gallons of lager, late-night curries, chips and kebabs, whose taste in literature does not often delve intellectually any further than The Sun or one of its equally vapid compatriots. These are men in the way that we have always thought men to be; builder’s cracks, flatulence, drunken rowdiness, and a lacking of interest in fashion, style, gastronomy, culture and anything that isn’t based in sport. In a camp almost opposite in every way is a recent breed of man that we lovingly call the Metrosexual; in basic terms an effeminate male that has somehow managed to be born heterosexual. The world is a very confusing place for the Metrosexual with his love of style, good food and high culture. And to make things worse for him he is determined to coiffure his hair, and has the audacity to parade as a straight man while committing such offences as using moisturising cream, even makeup. But all that is in the past, and now, well now it would seem that things have changed. From out of nowhere at all these two breeds of men, tribes at war, have metaphysically procreated and given birth to a beautiful baby boy; left to BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

grow and fend for itself while its paternal entities retreat into a messy divorce, continuing to sling defamations regarding the masculinity and intellect of each other. That child is grown now, nurtured by popular media, raised by programs like the X-Factor and encouraged by glossy magazines. And what is this creature born out of opposing forces, this brand spanking new breed of man? Its fathers were in such a rush to remove themselves from the embarrassing product of their drunken fumble in the dark, they neglected to give the child a name, so in deference to those that have cultivated him from birth, I shall call him Pop-Lad. Pop-Lad cannot be reviled by the Geezer because he is able to represent all that is masculine; he works out in the gym and is bulging with muscle, he wears cologne, manly cologne. He loves football, and curries, and his mates. He wears clothes that show off his masculinity, and he marks himself with tattoos that cover large areas of his body. And the Metrosexual too is proud of his progeny because Pop-Lad looks and smells good. Time is spent sculpting his hair and shaping his nails. He shaves his chest to better show off the shape of his body, and he is styled to within an inch of

his life in well-fitting designer clothing. His tattoos are precise, and multi-coloured; they are works of art. Pop-Lad takes care of his skin, and uses fake tan and makeup to make the best of his features. But it goes much deeper than appearance, for he has an understanding of the opposite sex, and of his own sexuality; he is educated, and has an appreciation for food, and wine, and music. Who could ever have imagined that two extremities of man could come together to produce something so perfect, not only in their own eyes, but in the eyes of all the breeds of man? And where does that leave the rest of us; we that combined make up the majority? Well of course all we can do is stare in awe, attempt to emulate, and hope that we will be granted asylum in Pop-Lad’s tribe. Or we can do the opposite, which is often more empowering, and deride this creature that seems so perfect, because we have our own breeds to protect from the media’s attempt to plasticise us all and turn us into Pop-Lads; walking, talking, singing and dancing television-friendly dolls. We are not just men; we are breeds of men.

JACK DE LA MARE Jack De La Mare is a Guernsey-born filmmaker, currently based between Guernsey and the University of Bournemouth where he is currently studying Film Production. He has done several films shot in Guernsey, and will soon be releasing his latest piece of work ‘4:48’.

‘…I was studying alongside musicians, dancers, managers, sound technicians, stage technicians, designers; a huge spectrum of people. I also did music there, voice over recordings for sound technicians and live sound for technicians where I would be on stage doing a monologue and they would be putting effects in to create a world. So you know, I got active and I did a lot of things; that inter-disciplinary experience is what I got out of it, aside from acting. UNDER SURVEILLANCE As part of the planning process for the newly renovated Rona Cole Gallery, the Guernsey Museum has commissioned the artist and Guernsey Arts Commissioner, Eric Snell to create a site-specific art work specifically for this gallery space. Eric Snell has, over the years, exhibited in many museums and art galleries around the world and has work in many public and private collections, but what is so special about this particular project, is that this new permanent installation. makes reference to both global as well as local issues. Set high up in the gallery roof space of the Rona Cole Gallery, Snell explores the use of closed-circuit television (CCTV) as an artistic medium. The cameras and screens co-exist in the same space making the gallery visitor both the observer as well as the observed. Snell is obviously making reference to the increasing paranoia and use of surveillance cameras post 9/11, but at the same time is making reference on a more personal note. He is also talking about his own childhood growing up in Guernsey in the 50's and 60's when everybody knew what everyone else was doing – when even without today’s technology, the island was “under surveillance.” There are many other connections to be made - but come and see the work for yourself. Under Surveillance is opened to the public as from Friday 5 October in the Rona Cole Gallery, Guernsey Museum Candie Gardens.

ERIC SNELL BORN IN GUERNSEY, ERIC SNELL LEFT THE ISLAND IN 1972 TO DO AN ART FOUNDATION COURSE AT BIRMINGHAM POLYTECHNIC. A YEAR LATER HE MOVED TO LONDON TO STUDY FINE ART AT HORNSEY COLLEGE OF ART. ON COMPLETING HIS STUDIES, SNELL SET UP HIS FIRST STUDIO IN THE EAST END OF LONDON. IN 1984 HE WAS INVITED TO REPRESENT BRITAIN AT THE JOAN MIRÓ FOUNDATION IN BARCELONA AND LATER THAT YEAR HE MOVED, WITH HIS WIFE JOANNA LITTLEJOHNS, TO BERLIN AS ‘ARTIST IN RESIDENCE’ ON THE PRESTIGIOUS DAAD INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME. With numerous exhibitions in Europe, Japan, Scandinavia and North America, when Snell returned to Guernsey in the early 90’s, he was invited by the Education Department to set up the first school of art in the island. Based at Grange House and part of the Guernsey College of Further Education he went on, together with Joanna Littlejohns, to establish the first artist in residence initiative in the island. Designer of the Liberation Monument in 1994 and recipient of an Arts Council of England International Research Fellowship in 2004 Eric Snell, with ‘View through to the other side of the World’, dug a ‘virtual’ hole through to the Museum of Modern Art in Brisbane, Australia. As a Commissioner on the Guernsey Arts Commission and Founding Director of the Art and Islands Foundation, Eric Snell believes that Guernsey and the other islands in the Bailiwick, are perfectly positioned to play a major role in shaping and defining a new direction in art that will help enrich the quality and texture of island life, while placing the Bailiwick firmly on the cultural map. Our journey has now taken us from Russia into Mongolia, a land of nomadic people whose present way of life remains rooted deeply in the traditions of the past. An immense wilderness of unspoilt grassy steppe, clear lakes, meandering rivers, rugged mountains and windswept desert, where horses outnumber people 13 to 1 in the least-densely populated country on the planet. The vast majority of Mongolia is inaccessible to the average tourist; a lack of paved roads, changeable weather and isolated locations mean travel here is not for the fainthearted. For us this presents a fantastic, if challenging, opportunity with our vehicle to explore wild areas, which see very few foreign visitors, and experience first hand this ancient and fascinating lifestyle. Historically, Mongolia has been a powerful player in development of the modern world, forming the largest continental empire under Genghis Khan. Nearly 800 years after Genghis Khan conquered most of the known world, the people erected a statue in his honour. This 40m high silver statue was listed as the worlds 8th worst monument but when standing at the base and seeing the fierce-looking emperor atop his horse, shining in the bright sun and surrounded by the rolling grassland hills, you cannot help but be impressed. Despite his frequently ruthless tactics- he is rumoured to have played polo with his enemies severed heads- Mongolians retain an immense pride in their founder, who brought peace by encouraging religious tolerance between Buddhist, Christian, Jewish and Islamic faiths. In recent centuries, Mongolia has suffered from the power struggle between its heavyweight neighbours, Russia and China, both vying for control over the region. The effects of a suffocating Soviet rule were shockingly evident as we visited several Buddhist monastery sites. In 1937 27,000 people were executed, 17,000 of whom were monks, as Stalin sought to purge Mongolia of it’s religious and

cultural heritage. At Gandan Khiid, the counties largest Monastery located in the capital, only a few of the original 100 temples have survived. A magnificent 26m high copper and gold statue of the Buddha of compassion stands defiantly in the main temple; the original statue was melted down and rumoured to be made into bullets for the Russian army. It was only as recently as 1990 that Buddhism was again openly practised here. Similarly, the temples of Erdene Zuu Khiid were savagely destroyed and only 3 of the original 100 remain; monks were killed, sent to Siberian Gulags or forced to join the Russian army. To sit amongst the monks during their morning ceremonial chantings, it is difficult to imagine how such brutality could be inflicted against something so peaceful and non-threatening and even more sobering to think how only recently things had changed. Throughout history, the Mongolian people have suffered pressure from outside influence to change; Stalin forced them away from their nomadic lifestyle to live in fixed settlements, forming a more ‘civilised’ population. Although the withdrawal of Russia led to economic disaster for Mongolia, their independence and freedom was regained and they chose to return to their nomadic roots. In recent years, Mongolia has seen a rapid economic growth and increased prosperity; wandering around the capital, Ulaanbaatar, we saw traditionally dressed families in their colourful, gilt-trimmed Dels alongside fashionably western-style dressed young people sipping cocktails at swanky bars. In the city backstreets, goods are carried to the black market by ox and cart, whilst brand new shiny Lexus jostle for position on the crowded main street. Today, the prevalence and strength of the Nomadic lifestyle is evident within minutes of leaving the city; small settlements of a few Gers (white, circular, felt tents) dot the verdant hillsides and valleys GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

and herds of animals are grazing in every direction. Large numbers of goats and sheep amble across the dusty vehicle tracks and men on horseback (or motorbike) herd cows and horses back towards the camp during late afternoon. As we travel west through mountainous regions, yak replace cows, their imposing horns and shaggy coats a striking image against snowy peaks and dark, cloudy skies. In Mongolia, hospitality is more of a necessity than a social requirement; travelling huge distances between any kind of town or village and the small temporary Gers become a lifeline and as such have an open door policy. During a heavy downpour whilst camped on the banks of the White Lake, a motorbike pulled up outside our awning and a Mongolian couple and their 3 year old son hurried inside to take shelter. An hour, several cups of tea, biscuits and communication involving gestures, photos and drawings later and they clambered back onto their wet bike and drove away. Bemused by our roof tent, locals from Ger camps have come over and invited us to eat and sleep in their Gers. This generosity and warmth to strangers is such a basic act of humanity but it is difficult to imagine walking up to someone’s house in Guernsey during heavy rain and expecting dinner and possibly a bed for the night. Mongolians retain an enormous respect for the land, recognising and living accordingly to the balance and harmony of nature. Scattered around the countryside are ‘ovoo’, piles of stones; people stop, add a stone and circumambulate several times clockwise to give thanks to earthly spirits. Traditionally, food has been heavily red meat-based with the addition of dairy products and flour. This diet still prevails today and we have been able to sample Buuz beef dumplings, Khushuur fried mutton pancakes, Yak noodle stir-fry and even an entire sheep’s head washed down with fermented mares milk. Far from being out-dated or obsolete, Mongolians bring their nomadic way of life and its associated customs and traditions proudly into the 21st century and it is these which will hopefully see their country prosper and embrace the new whilst maintaining the solid foundations of the old. es, I admit it - when it comes to traveling I commit the ultimate backpacker crime. I am a shameless planner addict. Turning up in a country with no plan is, I suppose, romantic...at least in theory. In reality I suspect that it consists of endless stints in internet cafes, a wall of fully booked accommodation and inflated last minute prices.

THE SCHEME SAVED US AT LEAST £1000, WE STAYED IN FANTASTIC ACCOMMODATION, ATE LIKE KINGS AND MET REAL LIFE LOCALS.

For these reasons, amongst others, I had planned almost every aspect of my boyfriend and I’s six week trip up Australia’s east coast. Six weeks is not long to cover over 1,700 miles so we wanted to make the most of every minute. Life is, however, always full of surprises. Although most of the surprises Australia had to offer were pleasant, one of them was most definitely not: cost. This annoying little fact is the bane of the life of most British travelers Down Under. Both a single course meal or a night in a Sydney hostel dorm might set you back around $25-30. My savings account wasn’t prepared for this. Luckily, however, though inadvertently, I was. Three months prior to our arrival in Oz I had set up a profile on www.helpx. net. Once I had paid the £15 two year membership fee I was able to browse through the profiles of various hosts living in Australia. Whilst every host offered something different, they all shared one common aim: to provide free food and accommodation to travelers. There is, of course, a catch. HelpX stands for Help Exchange and in exchange travelers must offer to help around the property for a set period of time, generally a few hours a day. After sending around some emails we had managed to secure three week-long stays with three different hosts: a ‘Pom’ couple near Brisbane, a Flemish lady near Noosa and a couple who manage holiday rentals in Palm Cove. Each host had written a short description about themselves, their property and what they were looking for in helpers. Some hosts also provided photographs and, crucially, other helpers had left reviews of their own stay. To stay on the safe side we only contacted hosts with four or five star reviews.

Whilst many people were rather skeptical when I announced that we were traveling around Australia and staying with strangers, the risk paid off. Not only did the scheme save us at least around £1000, we stayed in fantastic accommodation, ate like kings and met real life locals. With the hosts near Brisbane we stayed in a large and modern cabin, complete with a huge double bed, television, bathroom and kitchen. When near Noosa we stayed in a fullykitted out flat built underneath the host’s traditional Queenslander home. The traveler’s jackpot in terms of accommodation, however, was found whilst staying with the third couple. We stayed in a five star hotel apartment suite. For free. We had a hot tub on our balcony that opened up onto a rainforest pool. For free. Next to Palm Cove beach. For free. Beats an eight-bed hostel room any day. Now whilst a five star hotel has its many draws, we preferred our stays with the other two couples. In Palm Cove our busy host paid for our groceries and we then prepared our own meals in our luxury suite- a hard life. However with the other hosts we were given food to prepare ourselves for breakfast and lunch and then were treated to lavish home-cooked dinners every night. Seafood, steaks, roast meat, stews, apple tarts, homemade ice-cream, homemade beer, wine...you name it, we ate it. Compared to the simple meals

we had been preparing in simple hostel kitchens, this was five star cuisine. Even compared to home cooked meals with our families back in the U.K. this was a luxury. And whats more when it came to dinner time we were no longer helpers but guests. Once we had completed our set period for helping for the day we were totally off the hook and free to relax. There is of course no denying that we did have to do a fair bit of hard work. Well, hard-ish. The first two properties in which we stayed were in real rural settings with huge gardens that demanded a lot of attention. Whilst staying near Brisbane we weeded, lopped, pruned, mulched, carried and dropped until I felt my total novice gardener status upgrade to that of semiprofessional. Our exchange required twenty hours of helping which we were able to complete at our leisure. Not only did we both learn some new skills, but I also became somewhat more immune to the sight of toads and spiders, of which there were many. No snakes spotted (it was their winter), but there were a few scorpions in their place. With the hosts in Noosa and in Palm Cove we did even less work- only about fifteen hours and we would have been happy to have done more. Whilst near Noosa my boyfriend was wielding a chain saw and carrying thick bamboo trunks, I made a cake and did some vacuuming- not so far removed from my own home life. Then in Palm Cove it was back to the weeding and mulching. None of the work was particularly difficult, just time consuming. In a country like Australia where the minimum wage for the over twenties is $15.59 an hour- why not draft in a couple of travelers to chop back a few hedges? For a lot of young people going away, traveling equates itself with slaving away at a monotonous job at home for months on end. Not only is traveling in a country such as Australia expensive in the first place, but charity volunteering schemes are becoming increasingly unaffordable and difficult to come by if you have limited time on your hands. But in working for families we not only saved money but learnt new skills and made new friends. We also certainly saw sides of Australia that we never would have had we spent all of our time in hostels. Furthermore, this is not a scheme that limits itself to young gap-year types. Whilst the majority of helpers are in their early twenties, there are also plenty of older people who volunteer, especially if they have useful skills. Some even bring their children along, particularly if the hosts have children too. Helpx is not the only scheme that offers this type of exchange. To my knowledge there is also Workaway and WWOOF or, if you are looking for just a plain old crash pad, you could choose CouchSurfing. But whichever scheme you choose I expect the same rule applies: the more you give the more you get. So I urge you, fellow travelers, take a risk, save some cash, meet the locals and make some memories.

I awoke craving a breakfast of baked brie and Cherry Coke, vowed to purchase some cows and begin brewing my own sugary toothrot, or die trying. You’ll pry my bottle of Irn Bru from my cold dead hands!

You can use any old sugar, although different types of sugar make different tastes. I use caster sugar, brown sugar, honey and molasses depending on what I’m brewing up. If I had more money I’d try agave syrup and maple syrup too, because my ever-expanding colony of yeasts will eat anything sweet. You can use fruit juices too, although not pineapple as it’s a buzzkill for yeasts. No bootleg Lilt, I’m afraid.

It turns out that brewing your own fizzy drinks isn’t even that hard, providing you’re happy with something that’s more along the lines of the fancier fizzes you get from Waitrose. Posh drinks like Fentiman’s tend to be tastier anyway, and I suppose if you really want something that tastes like Panda Pops you could always just slosh in some random e numbers and a shot of drain cleaner. The important thing to understand is that you can easily fiddle around with the timings and turn posh, home-made cocktail mixer into posh, home-made alcopops. It’s basically prison hooch for middle-class foodies.

Yeast: the plant of wonders The key ingredients for the soda homebrewer are yeast, flavourings and a skipload of sugar. I’ll go into detail about those shortly, but you’ll also need something to brew it in, something to filter out the yeast gunk from the finished product, empty plastic bottles for storage and powdered citric or tartaric acid to provide bite and counteract any chlorine in your water. I use 2 litre kilner jars to brew and jam straining bags to filter out the yeast, although I suppose that a brewer’s demijohn might actually work better as it’s designed for the job. You can get citric acid from chemists, and tartaric acid is in cream of tartar. Once you’ve acquired those, you’ll need a yeast of some kind. You can do a perfectly decent job with brewer’s yeast or even bread yeast added to warm water, but I’d recommend purchasing a weird oddity named ‘ginger beer plant’ over the internet. It isn’t really a plant, so you’ll just receive a sachet with what looks like translucent jelly in it - this is actually a tiny colony of yeasts and other bacteria that likes nothing more than turning sugar water into delicious fizzy drink for you.

This might take another four days, and means it is carbonated, although you can always let off some pressure, add more sugar and keep brewing. Transfer this to a fridge for another three days to stop the yeast working, and then its ready to store or drink. At this point, it could be anywhere between 1 and 5% alcohol. Like a North Korean rocket scientist, you’ll need to experiment. Ginger beer, cola and coke To make the best ginger beer you’ve ever tasted, juice (or grate and mash through a sieve) three inches of root ginger and add to the above lemony brew with a half teaspoon of cayenne pepper. I also add some cloves, cardamom, lemongrass or lime juice - the possibilities are endless. It also tastes boss if you brew up a mixture of cold sweet tea (of any kind) - you quickly work out that anything that tastes okay sugary and cold will eventually brew into something wonderful.

Caffeine is not actually a flavouring Now, the most important part is flavour. You should probably start with cloudy lemonade or ginger beer, because these are the easiest, and you’ll be so impressed with the results that you’ll be emboldened to try new stuff and won’t get discouraged when you inevitably muff up trying to make cola. Who knew that cola requires at least seven essential oils? I’d always assumed it was just caffeine, sugar and road tar.

So, what’s in cola? I suggest you google the recipe for ‘OpenCola’. This surprisingly Coke-y fizz contains essential oils of lavender, lime, orange, cassia, lemon, nutmeg, coriander and neroli. You can churn that lot up with some gum arabic binder and add it to sugar water to get a basic cola, and then add in whatever you want. In the interests of health and safety, Gallery’s lawyers instruct me to add that powdered caffeine is actually highly poisonous, and although Coca-Cola used to contain it, cocaine is illegal, dangerous and may turn you into moustachioed eighties funkster Rick James. My tip is to stick to dark rum and lime juice. Next month, I’m going to show you how to make your own cheese, yoghurt and other milky treats. Milky Milky.

The base of most sodas is something sugary combined with something sharp. You can make a perfectly good one by adding lemon juice and sugar into 2 litres of warmish water until it tastes too sweet to drink. Put in a quarter teaspoon of tartar or citric and then add your yeast. If you’re using Ginger Beer Plant, you simply add a few tablespoons of the plant and loosely cover the jar for between three and seven days, tasting periodically to check the yeast hasn’t eaten all of the sugar. If it’s not sweet, add more. Providing there’s enough yeast-food you’ll soon notice a fizz begin, which is caused by the yeast pooping out carbon dioxide. This is why you don’t seal the jar, unless you want sugary explosions in your house. Once it tastes slightly too sweet to drink, strain out the yeast to save for another brew and funnel the liquid into an empty plastic

Throughout September Laska’s has been collating entries to the prestigious ‘Shake Off’ Cocktail competition. Entrants from all over Guernsey have been inventing cocktails with a Guernsey theme in a bid to win FREE Cocktails for a whole year for themselves and 5 lucky friends. 6 lucky finalists have been chosen from a whole host of entries. These budding mixologists will be spending a session behind the bar with our guys at Laska’s, mixing and perfecting their cocktails before the big “Shake Off” night on Thursday 18th October 2012, when the finalists will mix their drinks for the judges and the winner will be announced.

Laska and Gallery have appointed 4 local judges to sample the delights of the contestants assisted by Kevin Metcalf, Laska Manager. We invited the four judges along to a Cocktail Masterclass here at Laska in order to sharpen them up on their cocktail knowledge and get acquainted. The feeling amongst them seems to be one of excitement and anticipation for what promises to be fantastic night. ISLAND ADDITION words | Jeff Le Messurier MY CLIENTS CAME INTO OUR FOREST ROAD SHOWROOM AND ASKED IF I COULD COME UP WITH A DESIGN FOR A KITCHEN AND UTILITY. THEY WERE IN THE PROCESS OF EXTENDING THEIR PROPERTY.

hen they arrived at the showroom they were feeling quite overwhelmed by all the choices available to them and didn’t know where to begin. I was able to guide them through all the options to ensure they ended up with a space that they could use and felt comfortable in. Kitchens are often designed to fit a space and do not take into account the client’s needs however at CIC we like to take a more personal approach by talking to the client about their lifestyle and how they want the kitchen to work for them. For some the kitchen is just a space for preparing food, for others it is the heart of the family home. Over a relaxing cup of coffee in the showroom I got to know Mr & Mrs Sarnia. I discovered that Mrs Sarnia was by all accounts an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining the family. Mr Sarnia enjoyed the results of Mrs Sarnia’s passion for cooking! As the room did not actually exist at the time, I worked off the supplied architects drawings. I went through the various scenarios of how the rooms would be used, and took into account existing furniture that Mr & Mrs Sarnia wanted to keep. This influenced both the design and the colour palettes. We started by putting together a concept design using a traditional manufacturer. We quickly realised that whilst my clients wanted the traditional look they also wanted more modern features such as incorporating ergonomic drawer mechanisms and an easy to clean finish. After reviewing the available options we agreed that a Mobalpa kitchen was the best for them. Mobalpa are based in France and produce high quality, high spec kitchens at a very reasonable cost. My clients chose a traditional style door and handles which incorporated the modern

features they wanted including slow closing drawers & doors. As an added bonus they also come preassembled for a quicker and more solid fit. Mr & Mrs Sarnia decided an island would be a fantastic addition to their kitchen. I designed one which incorporated a ceramic Villeroy & Boch sink & Hansgrohe tap. I incorporated a Neff series 5 dishwasher, which is very quiet. This design forms part of the Mobalpa Living Concept enabling you to use your kitchen from the start of your food preparation to chatting over drinks with your friends at the end of an enjoyable evening. A storage and display area in the rear completed the look. In the main kitchen I included a Neff microwave combination oven, 2 Neff fully integrated fridge/freezers, and a Liebherr wine cooler with dual temperature control. The clients also wanted additional freezer space in the utility room which we supplied in the same style but with slightly simpler lines. As my clients love both cooking and entertaining, they wanted a cooker which would allow them to indulge in their passion. This request turned out to be perfect timing as we were putting on our first cooking demonstration the following week showcasing La Canche, our main supplier of Range

Cookers. La Canche are a French manufacturer of high quality appliances, but particularly cookers. They boast a customer base spread across the world; including several well known celebrity chefs. Their appliances have also featured in many cookery programmes. During the presentation the chef prepared a mouth-watering array of dishes, using the best Guernsey produce, giving a first-hand demonstration of how simple the Range was to use. Mr & Mrs Sarnia were extremely impressed and immediately ordered a Savigny Range. One of the great features of La Canche Ranges is that clients are able to customise them to their own personal preference. Personalisation can be as simple as choosing the colour and trim, or as complex as changing the oven and hob specification. A bespoke cooker surround was the final touch to making the Range the centrepiece of my client’s kitchen. The entertainment area of the kitchen features a large archway through to the conservatory. I added countertop glass-fronted display cabinets, and a wine cooler. Tall storage units, including internal larder drawers, cater for bulkier storage needs. Lighting is extremely important for any room in the house, but especially in a room that’s being used for multiple functions. All the cabinets come with fully integrated LED’s as standard and we also added in additional mood lighting under the plinths. Throughout the project we worked closely with our CIC fitting team – they kept us fully up to date with the installation. As we have our own granite and stone workshops, it gave the client’s the chance to view the stone and choose which slabs they wanted. They opted for a beautiful Galaxy Black polished granite with fully rounded edges. The granite used for the Island had an extra thick decorative moulded edge. Overall the project became a very successful one that I hope the clients enjoy for many years to come.

Chris Parrott, trust manager at Ardel Trust Company, has been named in the 2012 Private Client Practitioner Top 35 Under 35 list, published this week. Separated into categories for men and women, the lists identify the rising stars under 35 years old working in the private wealth management industry across the UK and Crown Dependencies. Guernsey-based Chris was made a manager earlier this year and has specific responsibility for the management of a client relationship team in Guernsey that specialises in employee benefit and retirement benefit schemes. He joined Ardel in September 2010 and has worked for almost ten years in the local trust sector. Holding a degree in Finance and Management Science, Chris is a qualified Chartered Certified Accountant and a Chartered Company Secretary. In his spare time, he is a keen sportsman, captains one of the local cricket sides and plays football, golf and hockey. The annual Top 35 Under 35 lists are produced by the publishers of E-Private Client magazine, one of the leading titles in the international private wealth management industry, and are designed to recognise and promote the rising stars of the private client practitioner community. Nominations were open to all corners of the industry, including advisors, lawyers, accountants, trustees or professional intermediaries, with the final lists being decided by the Private Client Practitioner panel. Earlier this year, Ardel was named in the Private Client Practitioner Top 25 Trust Companies 2012 list for the third consecutive year. Mr Lainé is a former deputy and is currently the Guernsey island manager for Channel Island’s IT consultancy C5 Alliance. The sub group is one of ten which make up the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce Council and was formed earlier this year with membership from the IT, finance and other sectors. Mr Lainé will lead the team in advising the Chamber Council on the issues and opportunities facing the island that relate to information and communications technology. The sub group’s full membership will be finalised in September and meetings will be held on a monthly basis. Mr Lainé has a strong background in both politics and business, with much of his experience within the telecoms and technology sectors. From 1994 to 2002 he owned and managed ATLAS Telecom before selling the business in 2002 to Jersey Telecom and taking on a series of managerial and consultancy roles. Since 2010, he has worked for Channel Island’s IT consultancy C5 Alliance and been involved in the implementation of a broad range of solutions for local businesses. “There has been a growing trend in recent years for businesses to invest in ICT and look for bespoke solutions. The Commerce & Employment department have recognised the importance of this with the new ICT strategy. “The ICT sub group will help steer this in the right direction ensuring Guernsey is in a position to fully exploit the value technology can have for local businesses and the island as a whole,” said Mr Lainé. Rupert Dorey, president of the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce said: “Forming the ICT sub group is an important step for Chamber. As an organisation we have a long history of supporting local businesses, and it is important we continue to position ourselves at the forefront of growing industry sectors. Based in PwC’s Guernsey office, Joanne Peacegood joined PwC in Guernsey as a trainee accountant in 1999, and undertook a secondment to the Toronto office of PwC Canada in 2005, returning to Guernsey in 2007. She works across a range of financial services clients, with a specific focus on alternative investment funds including structured products, private equity structures and litigation funds, whilst she also has experience of listings on the Main London Stock Exchange. Joanne sits on the Guernsey International Funds Association education subcommittee. Born in Bristol, Joanne is married to Adrian, with whom she has two daughters. In her spare time, she enjoys keeping fit, playing hockey and running. She is currently training for the ‘3 Peaks Challenge’ to raise funds for local and overseas charities. Lisa McClure originally joined PwC in Guernsey. In 2008, following a secondment in Sydney with PwC Australia, she returned to the Channel Islands, basing herself in Jersey. Working with clients in a broad range of industries including real estate, shipping, banking and insurance, Lisa has specialist expertise in the real estate industry and in her new senior role will take over the lead role in the PwC CI Real Estate practice. A regular presenter at various forums including Jersey Funds Association and client seminars, Lisa sits on the technical committee of the Jersey Society of Chartered Certified Accountants. Educated in Northern Ireland, Lisa is married to Scott and welcomed their son Ethan into their family in January this year. Outside work, Lisa enjoys spending time with her family and travelling. James de Veulle supports a wide variety of assurance and advisory services in Jersey and further afield. He joined PwC’s legacy firm Coopers & Lybrand in London as a trainee accountant, becoming part of PwC UK’s London Banking & Capital Markets group for nearly a decade, before returning to Jersey in 2007, spending four years at KPMG in the Channel Islands. He rejoined PwC in 2011, supporting clients across a range of financial services sectors, predominantly in private equity and alternative funds. James has been working on an international Anti-Money Laundering assignment in Poland and the United States this year and is an active member of the Jersey Funds Association committee.

THROUGHOUT SEPTEMBER, SIGNIFICANT MEASURES BY BOTH THE US AND EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANKS HAVE ENCOURAGED INVESTORS AROUND THE GLOBE, HOWEVER WE ARE NOT OUT OF THE WOODS YET. There could still certainly be an economic slowdown in the US in 2013 if certain laws governing spending cuts and tax increases, jointly known as the ‘fiscal cliff’, are not prevented through action by the Obama administration. Despite the November elections in the US, any new president will not be inaugurated until January. Assuming a deal can be done, the impending double-dip recession could then be avoided but such a deal is unlikely to be reached until after the election on November 6th, which does not give much time before the year-end deadline. The Fed’s latest monetary policy measures have sent market indices to test previous highs. They launched an open-ended program to purchase $40 Billion per month of predominantly mortgage-backed securities to help their objectives of price stability and increasing employment levels. US unemployment has been above 8% for over 3 years and has caused concern for both the Fed and Congress. Price stability relates mainly to the rate of inflation; the Fed’s target benchmark for which is 2%, the same as in the UK. Presently, their headline rate is running at 1.7%, although the recent increases in crude oil and food prices, could potentially send it above the target level over the next few readings. In addition, the Federal Open Market Committee has also recently announced a pledge to keep interest rates at low levels until mid-2015. This combination of QE3 and almost zero interest rates are aggressive steps to promote growth and wealth, which could lead to higher prices in equities, commodities and other risk assets. The World Bank has recently warned of the potential for food crises in poorer countries after crop outputs dropped globally due to the effects of dry weather and drought. Higher inflation, driven by these increasing food costs and the effect of oil prices, which contribute to food prices through transportation costs, will be an unwelcome development while the central banks try to contend with weak economic activity. A need to contain inflation through tighter policy would undermine efforts to support economic recovery. Overall we think the outlook continues to remain mixed although slightly more positive.

GUERNSEY POST ACHIEVES INVESTORS IN PEOPLE – GOLD STANDARD ACCREDITATION GUERNSEY POST IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT, FOLLOWING A RECENT ASSESSMENT, IT HAS ACHIEVED INVESTORS IN PEOPLE (IIP) GOLD STANDARD ACCREDITATION. It is the only utility in Guernsey to achieve IIP endorsement and is one of just a small number of businesses within the Channel Islands to be awarded IIP Gold. The consultancy’s ‘Love Sweet Potatoes’ campaign for Scott Farms International, the UK’s largest importer of the vegetable, was one of three campaigns shortlisted in the ‘Integrated Communications’ category in the Chartered Institute of Public Relations PRide Awards in the Wessex and Channel Islands region. Liquid’s CEO Lis Lewis-Jones and account manager Gemma Long were presented with the silver award at an awards ceremony in Southampton on Wednesday. Liquid managing director Jason MacKenzie said being awarded silver was an achievement for the whole of the Liquid team. ‘The Integrated Communications award recognises excellence in combining disciplines such as marketing, advertising, digital and public relations to generate business results ’ he said.

BROADWAY MUSICAL RAISES £12,000 FOR YOUNG PEOPLE GUERNSEY YOUNG PEOPLE GUERNSEY WILL RECEIVE £12,000 THANKS TO A CHARITY FUNDRAISER SPONSORED BY INVESTEC SPECIALIST BANK. The evening event took place at the Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts on Friday 21 September with a performance of “Back to Broadway”, which has been described as the spectacular musical of musicals. YPG is a Guernsey charity established in 2010 to identify and respond to the needs of young people in the Bailiwick, particularly those in need and ultimately those at risk. Earlier this year YPG commissioned the UK’s leading children’s charity Barnardo’s to provide an information, advice and listening service for young people in the island.

‘Liquid has extensive experience of executing integrated campaigns through marketing, design, media relations and online, so to have that independently recognised by judges with many years in the industry is something we are very proud of.’

‘As a local charity we continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of people in the island and the Back to Broadway fundraiser was no exception. It was an incredible evening with hugely generous donations and bids at a time when people are still cutting back due to the economic climate. The Love Sweet Potatoes campaign, which was worked on by members of Liquid’s teams in Guernsey, Jersey and Birmingham, set out to educate the consumer of both the nutritional benefits of the sweet potato and how to cook and eat it. Since it was launched in 2011, the campaign has gained national exposure and the business has increased its market share.

The new Barnardo’s service is provided at The Hub, located in Le Bordage, St Peter Port, which was officially launched on 7 September 2012 and provides young people aged between 11 and 16 years old with advice, information and help. The money raised will go towards the running costs of the facility, which includes wages and training, at about £25,000 a quarter.

o be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect from this challenge. Not being in the prime of my physical fitness, mainly due to curry and lager, I found the squash challenge particularly challenging and always knew that boxing had the potential to be that little bit harder! I also didn’t want to get hurt as I do have my good looks to worry about and I am not really accustomed to getting beaten up. In fact, the last time I had anything battered, it was a sausage at Beatons Chip Shop.

Today we are in the ring with Guernsey born James Woolnough who has so far notched up just short of 50 bouts at the young age of 22. He used to play football as a youngster at North, but now lists keeping fit for his boxing as his main pastime. Most of his training is at the Amalgamated Boys Club in St. Martins, which has been around since the 1950’s and has produced many great fighters over the years through the dedication of many, but mainly through the tireless efforts of Graham Guilbert who currently has over 25 carded boxers licenced to fight. As James went through a warm up, Graham tightened my gloves and fitted my headgear. The rules for this challenge were simple, I had to last two, two-minute rounds, I could hit James if I could and he couldn’t hit me back. Easy! After round one I thought that I was going to pass out, we even had to delay the beginning of round two by 5 minutes! One minute into round two and I was gasping for breath and we had to finish early. It was by far the hardest of these challenges physically that I have undertaken, and I defy anyone to step into the ring like that with no real training. Boxing then, what’s it all a….bout? (Sorry about that pun) Who was the first person to look at a cow and say, ‘I think I’ll squeeze these dangly things and drink whatever comes out’? My mate Wesley Enticott, that’s the sort of thing he does! What car do you drive and what would you swop it for? I drive a Suzuki Jeep and would swop it for a Ferrari Convertible thank you. How did you first get into Boxing? My Grandfather used to box and I really wanted to get into it after looking at some old photo’s when he was boxing in the Navy. I was about 11 years old at the time and I went along to the club. Describe the feelings that you get just before a fight and how you deal with them? I always get nerves and you might not know anything about the guy you are fighting, but when the bell goes it gives you a rush and the adrenaline starts. I love the feeling you get, and it is still the same after 47 bouts. If you could name one fight that sticks out in your memory what would it be? Well actually I would have to say there are two. Firstly beating Boyd Munroe from Jersey for the CI Light Middleweight Championships, which was the same title and division that my Grandfather had won fifty years previously and secondly, when I beat the British Four Nations Gold Medalist Zack Burton at Beau Sejour. I used to box under the name Kid Candle, one blow and I was out! Have you got a boxing nickname and if not what would it be?

Not officially but some of the boys call me “The Hook” although James, “The Wild One” Woolnough would work! How would you describe your Boxing style? I like getting into a bit of a tear-up but I can box on the back foot if I need to. Someone once asked me in the gym if they could borrow my boxing gloves, I said, “Sure, knock your self out” What’s the secret to a good punch? Basically power equals speed and strength, and if you can possess range, timing and accuracy you are on your way. I once went to a local boxing match and Dave “The Wallpaper” Watson was fighting. He got a good pasting and after the fight his coach hung him out to dry. Over your short career, which opponent has got the better of you more than others? He might not have got the better of me on more than one occasion but I was quite disappointed with my fight against Liam Conroy, which was a full on brawl but the decision went to him. I once went Shadow Boxing; Hank Marvin is much tougher than he looks. Who has been your toughest opponent to date and what made him stand out from the rest? Probably my last fight against David Still from Liverpool at the Track, he was a strong guy and kept coming at me despite me putting him down. I said to my friend, “I am staying in tonight to watch Fight Club”. He said, “Oh what, with Brad Pitt”? I said, “Nah, just by myself mate” When you watch a professional bout on television, what are you looking for in the fighters? I would be looking for entertainment, plenty of punches being thrown, how they move and the technique they use. What plans are there for you in the future? I will be competing in the ABA this season starting in October. If I can win the regional title then I would qualify to represent the Western Counties, which would give me a pathway through to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, 2014. What young Boxers in Guernsey should we be looking out for in the next few years? Mason Smale, Casey De La Mare and Emily Gallienne will be worth looking out for. The good thing about being a balloon artist is that the pay always increases with inflation. What’s the best thing about being a Boxer? Because you are always training it make you keep your fitness levels up, and makes you look and feel great. Here is your question form last months Palet player, Ken Laine Have you ever got into the ring with someone you really didn’t want to get into the ring with? I fought this guy called Tommy McGuckin from Barrow who was nicknamed the Warhorse when I was 17 and he was 34. At the weigh in I was told that he was as hard as nails and I didn’t really want to get into the ring. I did though and ended up beating him on points. And a question please for next months Clay Pigeon Shooter? What would possess you to shoot a poor Pigeon? GUERNSEY MARATHON

TRAINING FOR A MARATHON SO, YOU ARE GOING TO RUN THE 2013 GUERNSEY MARATHON...

WELL, TRAINING FOR A MARATHON IS NOT AN EXACT SCIENCE, BUT AN EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT TRAINING PROGRAMME DOES REQUIRE A NUMBER OF ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS. HERE ARE THE ONES THAT UNDERPIN THE TRAINING SCHEDULES. Surprise, surprise, the first one is REST. There is no doubt about it, you are going to put your body through a lot over the coming weeks. And, to help your body cope with this added workload, rest is going to be as important a part of your training schedule as is the running. Listen to your body and take heed of any warning signs. If you feel tired, even before you run a step, find yourself thinking up excuses not to run, or start suffering a series of minor injuries, you probably need more time off. Taking enough rest allows physical and mental recovery and gives your body the time to adapt to your workload. Remember, on rest days, that’s exactly what you should be doing. Training for a marathon requires your body to work harder than it ever has done. To see improvement without breaking down, you’ll need some RECOVERY RUNS. These should be nice and easy and you should feel relaxed. You should be breathing easily and able to hold a conversation throughout the run. This will mean running at about 65% of your Working Heart Rate (WHR) – and should be no more than 45 minutes duration. This allows your body to adapt to the training workload and therefore improve. It also helps with the removal of waste products that accumulate in your muscles after harder efforts. After the long endurance runs, THRESHOLD RUNS are probably your most valuable workouts. You will find them slightly uncomfortable and they’ll require concentration, but they are well worth the effort. They are run at a controlled brisk pace, about 85% of your WHR and you’ll only be able to say a couple of words!! Threshold runs improve your lactate threshold levels – that’s the speed above which

your body struggles to cope with the lactic acid created by burning energy without oxygen. They also improve your running efficiency and aerobic capacity (your body’s ability to utilise oxygen). All this helps to improve your marathon performance. LONG RUNS are vital – after all, a marathon is a very long run. At first, we will concentrate on increasing the time on your feet rather than worrying about distance. We will start by running for at least an hour at 65% WHR. Gradually, towards the end of the schedule, this will build to 75% WHR as you start to practise periods of marathon pace (MP). These runs improve your muscular endurance and condition your body to burn fat as its primary fuel source. They also prepare you physically and mentally for the task ahead. KENYAN HILL runs develop strength in your muscles and tendons without putting them under the type of stress they are exposed to during faster runs. We will run up a 10% gradient for about two minutes at a steady pace. Turn immediately at the top and jog down, then turn and repeat with no recovery. This type of session is used extensively by elite Kenyan athletes, and are one of their main conditioning sessions. Like a tempo, a hill session is not the time for witty social chat, as you will be running at about 80% WHR. FARTLEK is a Swedish term that means ‘speed play’. It involves a number of bursts of effort over a variety of distances with a variable recovery. So, for instance, running hard between lampposts, then recovery between the next two – then hard again between the next two, recovery to the next and then hard again to the next. In a typical 3 to 4 mile session you should manage 8 to 12 hard stages of between one and five minutes. IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING, AND REMEMBER, WE NEVER REALLY KNOW OUR LIMITS UNTIL WE EXCEED THEM.

Q&A’s So, another Guernsey Marathon down, were you happy with how it went and do you think it was a success? Yes we were in all aspects. The races and atmosphere, weather and crowds that supported at Footes Lane and along the route were incredible. What has the feedback been like from the runners and people who took part in the Guernsey Marathon this year? The feedback has been very positive with the majority of runners saying that they will be back for 2013. The marshals and helpers have all expressed desire to help again next year. The marathon has become even more of an international event this year; did you have many runners travelling from far and wide to take part? The majority of our runners were from overseas, spread across over 5 continents as far apart as Australia and Canada! There were various course features in place such as drinks stations, gradual inclines, countdown markers and the finishing line in the stadium. Does the course stay relatively the same each year, or do you have any plans to alter it for 2013? The course is our selling point! The Guernsey Marathon offers one of the most scenic marathon routes in the World! For 2013 we shall change the venue of the Guernsey Marathon and bring it in to town. This will mean the route will change slightly and will now run from town through St Martins to join the original route along Forest Road. Who in your eyes was the shining star in this year’s marathon, in your opinion are there any ‘ones to watch’ in the coming years? Shona Crombie-Hicks for us stood out, coming 1st in the ladies marathon and beating the course record by over 4 minutes. Ones to watch would be all 3 podium winners of the ladies race who will all be back next year to compete.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

The marathon helps to raise funds for some very worthy charities; can you give us some details of who these charities are and how the funds help them? For 2012 we adopted the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation. In 2011 we raised £11,000 for PPBF and so we are hoping we have beaten that for them this year. We await confirmation of final amount raised. Money raised is for the neonatal ward. We have to of course mention the family fun day; it is more than just a marathon event but a community event that you put on. How was this received by the public? Our goal is to offer an event the whole of Guernsey gets behind. Creating a fun day out attracts children and their families. 2012 was the start of introducing this element and it was received extremely well. 2013’s Fun Day Out will be much bigger and better, with many more activities. Why do you neglect yourself in this way? Your body is broken – fix it! The value people put on their own bodies is alarmingly low. If your body fat percentage is way too high – fix it; if you are always knackered and moody – fix it; if you are wheezing like an amateur bag-piper each time you walk up the stairs – fix it. No matter your age, gender or how much knowledge you have, don’t give me any excuses; your body has phenomenal powers of repair so stop abusing your body today! Personal possessions are way more important to some people and I will never understand this mentality. If you are driving along the road one day and you hear a slight change of noise from the engine; suddenly you panic and pull up the bonnet and stare at it hoping the longer you stare at it, the better it will become. You check the oil even though you know you filled the oil tank only last week. Then you jump back in and turn the radio up just in case the noise you don’t recognise is still there, only this time it’s accompanied by another sound you are not familiar with. Ok that’s it! You cannot take this any more; panicking you take the car to the garage with great concern, pay an extortionate bill and drive home. Your

recognised the problem, panicked and then fixed it. Why would you value anything more than your own body? Why don’t you see the problem or why do you choose to ignore it like it’s not important? It’s your body, so show it some respect and treat it with the same care and attention like you would your relatively irrelevant possessions. Get your priorities sorted out. Ditch the car and buy a bicycle and address the beer belly, skinny leg problem that almost is becoming an epidemic amongst men of all ages. It’s not cool on any level and it’s a mind shift that’s required. The value of the human body is priceless and when I see and hear overweight people preaching how happy they are being cheerful and chubby, it really doesn’t wash with me. If you are genuinely a cheery chubby and you are happy to be fat and unhealthy, just imagine being strong, lean and healthy. I promise you that you will be bloody ecstatic! Stop kidding yourself and get creating a caloric deficit, get moving and ignite your metabolism. Eating properly can go a long way to triggering your metabolic rates but the easiest and best way is to introduce good old fashioned exercise. It’s time to show yourselves some respect. I’m not going to discuss the potential dangers of being overweight for long periods of time. Everyone knows the basics. Belly fat is one thing, and you can see and recognise that, but visceral fat is another and you should be even more concerned if your visceral fat levels are too high. This is the inner fat which surrounds our vital organs; the higher the belly fat, chances are your visceral fat is also alarmingly high – change it!

I’m going to give you some tips to chew over: 1. Ditch the junk food, reduce sugar and saturated fats; empty the cupboards of all temptations and should you need to snack, choose dried fruit or nuts. 2. Stay hydrated. Do not mistake hunger for thirst. Personally I go for around four litres daily and I’m never without water to hand at all times. 3. Don’t be fooled by healthy fruit juice; it’s usually laden with sugar – see previous point. 4. Carb cycle – see last month’s “Gallery” for instructions on how this should be done. Make sure they are low GI carbs such as fruits and veg. Slow release carbs are also favourable such as sweet potatoes; brown rice and various pulses. If bread is eaten, make sure its granary or whole meal. Just be mindful, too many carbs can bump up your insulin levels which can slow down your metabolic rate! 5. Become a caveman. Don’t beat your woman with a club if she disagrees with you. I mean eat like one; quality proteins and fats. If it doesn’t fly, swim, walk or grow, then don’t eat it. 6. Stop comfort eating. Cut out the sneaky fridge visits like a night porter checking the prison cells. The trouble with late night snacking is usually you go straight to bed and this causes your sugar levels to rocket and you don’t burn many calories whilst you sleep, turning to fat faster than you can say “oh dear I’ve accidentally eaten another doughnut”. Like late night snacking, it’s usually connected to an emotional problem somewhere in the background. Recognise this and fix it! 7. Need I say avoid alcohol?! If you are committed to social events, choose your drinks wisely. Clear drinks would be the best way to go. If you are slugging pints like a sailor on foreign shores where the drink is free and the ladies are aplenty, just be aware alcohol generally has very little nutritional value and all calories consumed will be stored as fat. 8. Get doing HIIT. Do high intensity work when it comes to doing cardio. For every four sessions high intensity, make sure you throw in one steady state cardio session so your body is still burning fat from both energy sources. 9. Do your own research on food types that are going to help spark up your metabolism such as chilli. Do your homework and educate yourself so your choices are more intelligent. The number of people that still ask me how they should be eating is baffling. Educate yourselves – it’s a no brainer! 10. Stop making excuses. I can’t because…..; I would but…..; I was going to but……; I forgot; couldn’t find time – blah, blah, blah. Prioritise the most important thing in your life – your health!

When it comes down to resistance training, and you should certainly be including some on your journey to a leaner more muscular physique, I would suggest you keep your rest periods very low or even non existent between working sets on the same body part to get your lactic acid levels high. When you feel the “burn”, don’t give up. That’s the feeling you are looking for so accept it and learn to love it. “Yeah buddy” high lactic acid will indicate the release of “Growth Hormone” which is very beneficial when the name of the game is fat burning and muscle development. Compound moves such as squats, dead-lifts, bench presses are also very beneficial for fat loss, but, most importantly, do them with proper form and appropriate load. Also recognise you are looking for volume anywhere between 6-10 sets at ten repetitions with a slow negative and 30 seconds rest between sets should ignite muscle growth and the more metabolic lean muscle you build, the more fat you strip. Do resistance training 3 days a week with volume and perhaps rotate these with a bootcamp. I’d suggest you visit “Storm Force Fitness” as those guys can strip fat from a supermodel with an eating disorder. Also guys, if you can try to manipulate your testosterone levels whilst in the gym, this has been shown to affect your metabolism positively. Studies show after 15 minutes of intense training your testosterone levels rise and roughly 45 minutes into intensive training those levels drop off. Be mindful of this so you are not doing far too much work with the “more the merrier” attitude. Get in, work hard, get out!

Here are a few ways you can manipulate your testosterone levels: 1. Get your big movers going: legs, back, and multi-joint exercises. Avoid isolation movement. 2. Go heavy. Short reps around 5-7 at about 80% to 90% of your one repetition max. 3. When training heavy, 2-3 minutes rest between working sets. 4. If you are working with a lighter weight keep your reps higher and your rest no more than 30 seconds between sets. 5. Introduce isometric pauses. The most powerful fibres are the high threshold increase intramuscular tension and elevate insulin growth factor! Here are some ideas you can start to implement into your daily routines but basically it all boils down to good old fashioned hard graft and that’s the reality. No magic pills or fancy diet are going to make you train hard; that’s entirely your responsibility just like your body is your most prized possession, so start taking care and placing value on it like you do your prized possessions. Become the best ever version of yourself and witness all the other aspects of your life improve. If your lifestyle is poor – change it!

MAZDA RX-3 GALLERY WERE APPROACHED BY DALE FROM FOREST ROAD GARAGE... “IN YOUR NEXT EDITION DO YOU FANCY TAKING MY OLDSCHOOL RX3 OUT FOR A SPIN,” PERFECT WE SAID AS THE NEXT EDITION IS HOMME. A RARE JAPANESE CLASSIC When all is said and done, there are not too many classic and collectable Japanese cars from the early 1970’s. But there is one exception, and that is for anything that came standard with a Rotary engine. The good folks at Mazda have proven to be rather adept at manufacturing extraordinarily exciting cars - todays RX8 and MX5 both being brilliant cars to drive while remaining relatively affordable. And back in 1972 the affordable pocket rockets were undoubtedly the Mazda RX2 and RX3. The RX3 was first released to the Japanese domestic market in March that year, and was initially powered by the 10A Rotary engine, while a higher spec GT came with the 12A engine and 5

speed manual. This engine, taken from the RX2, was fitted to all RX3’s sold outside of Japan and Australia. The 1972 RX-3 was powered by the 10A in Japan, Australia, and Europe, while other markets got the larger 12A from the RX-2. The 1972 RX-3 was the first rotary-powered station wagon. 10A Engine output was 105 hp and 100 lb•ft (135 Nm). 0-60 mph time was 10.8 seconds, and the car ran a 17.6 second quarter-mile (400m). The RX-3 was finally dropped in 1978 to make room for the new Mazda RX-7. Of all the pre-RX-7 rotary vehicles Mazda built (930,000 in total), the RX-3 was by far the most popular. Of all the RX-3’s built, the coupe exceeded 50 percent of total sale - all facts which influenced the design profile of the RX-7.

I don’t know whether it is the human desire to have slaves and hold power over other beings that can do work for us, or the obsession with creating life in our own image out of nothing and being able to call ourselves gods; but it seems that we have always had a fixation on the idea of humanoid automatons with the capacity to imitate logical thought. These robots litter our popular culture, but can all be seen working here in the 21st century in one form or another, and can be categorised into five distinct classes:

The Servant

The Killer

The Companion

The Factory

Of all the servant-type androids in science fiction, the most notable is probably C-3PO from the Star Wars franchise. A shiny humanoid robot that is both pompous and sycophantic, and is every inch the archetypal English butler or civil servant. As we speak there are robotic creatures of this type being devised for use once the technology becomes financially accessible. There are already many other slave-type robots out there, including programmable vacuuming robots that have hummed onto the market, and in Germany there is an electric wheelchair which can be programmed to make planned movements and to carry out physical tasks using its robotic arm and many different sensors.

There are subtle differences between the servant and the companion, as the robot is still programmed to serve, only now as a friend. In the childrens’ television series of the early 80s ‘Metal Mickey’, the title character was a huge cumbersome beast of a robot that served as friend and catalyst to adventure. Although the US and Japan are both developing man-size robots that can interact and play, there are many toys which can perform both physical and audio responses as a result of being subjected to sound, voice command, movement or programming, and would be regarded as robots.

Robots are not always good and in James Cameron’s classic ‘The Terminator’ an android in the shape of Arnold Schwarzenegger is sent from the future to kill a would-be revolutionary leader before having even been born. Although the idea of a robotic version of Nietzsche’s Master Race as an army of invincible, or disposable, supermen seems farfetched, robots are now being used to detonate mines and explosive devices. There are even unmanned flying drone bombers, known as UAVs which can destroy life without risk of harm to the operator, while dehumanising the act of killing and lessening the impact of guilt and responsibility.

Less robot and more intelligent machine, Bertha, a children’s puppet animation from the 90s was the complete factory robot. Enter a few commands into her keyboard and off she would start, and before you knew it there would be all manner of manufactured gems rolling out on her conveyor belt. Although real factories do not work in this way, so many factory lines now, especially in areas like car manufacture, have dispensed with the need for hundreds of human workers in preference for banks of robotic arms who complete their task the same way each time and do not need wages, or breaks, or pensions.

Bionics

The Borg from Star Trek Next Generation and Voyager must rate as one of the meanest but most incredible baddies ever to be presented on television. The Borg can be likened to a nest of ants made up of humanoid species that have been ‘assimilated’ into the ‘collective’ and have been improved technologically with non-organic parts, making them bionic, or cyborg, beings. There are prosthetic legs now used by athletes which cannot be used in able-bodied competitions because they give too great an advantage, and there are prosthetic arms which can be controlled by the brain through interfacing with the nervous system. There are even robotic operating theatres controlled by surgeons who are thousands of miles away.

Like it or not, robots, androids, and cyborgs, real and virtual, have captured our imaginations. Look around and you will see that we are surrounded; be it in the real world or in films, television, animation, games and the toys our children play with. We have created speech that universally represents the robots, and we have created dance and mime to imitate this thing that we created initially in fiction. It may be that we will need to draw up an international charter on robotic ethics pretty soon as such things are already being discussed, even though these sentient manufactured creatures have not yet had their first Frankenstein spark of life.

A CONCEPT CAR FOR THE ROAD

ALL-NEW MAZDA6 WHEN THE ALL-NEW MAZDA6 IS LAUNCHED AT FOREST ROAD GARAGE IN JANUARY, MOTORISTS IN GUERNSEY WILL SEE THERE IS A TREND EMERGING FROM MAZDA, WITH ITS NEW PRODUCTION CARS LOOKING JUST LIKE ITS EXCITING CONCEPTS. When the all-new Mazda6 saloon and tourer were first shown together at the Paris Motor Show, their design and style was incredibly well received, and much of this overwhelmingly positive response was due to their striking similarity to the earlier Takeri design concept. “With our ‘KODO - Soul of Motion’ design ethos, we are taking our concept cars and driving them off the show stand and onto the road,” says Peter Birtwhistle, Mazda’s European Chief Designer. “You only have to look at our recent design studies to realise just how closely our production models resemble our concept cars.” Offering a choice of 20 saloon and 16 tourer models, priced from £16,495, the allnew Mazda6 range is eagerly anticipated by staff and customers at Forest Road Garage’s showroom.

“Much like the Mazda CX-5 compact SUV mirrored the proportions, stance and detailing of the Minagi concept car unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Show, so the Takeri was the unmistakable inspiration for the new Mazda6,” comments Dale Crowsley, Dealer Principal at Forest Road Garage. “If you view the new Mazda6 and Takeri next to each other it is easy to see just how the proportions and stance are almost exactly the same. Most observers would be hard pressed to tell one from the other.”

Japanese brand to show concepts closer to production vehicles – hence Minagi and Takeri. “When you see the new Mazda6 on the road in its natural street scene environment, its similarity with Takeri is even more pronounced with its dramatic proportions, muscular stance and tactile detailing. Which is really what it is,” concludes Dale.

JT has announced that its fibre-to-thehome programme, Gigabit Jersey, has passed the significant milestone of 1000 homes now connected to its new fibre services. This figure exceeds expectations and proves demand among Islanders who are keen to take advantage of the benefits of fibre broadband. Of the 1000 homes now connected, one percent have chosen JT’s Gigabit (1042 Mb) fibre service and become amongst the first to experience the world’s fastest fibre broadband. Meanwhile, three percent of fibre customers have chosen 100Mb services, which means they too are now experiencing superfast broadband and benefitting from the advantages this presents. JT’s Gigabit Jersey programme is progressing on schedule as the company is installing the cabling and equipment to connect properties around the Island to its new fibre network. To me this highlight’s a new way of making music, doing it all, predominantly yourself, through social media and developing a deep relationship with fans and, while Ginger’s campaign may be an extreme example, this could be the reinvigoration indie music needs to reignite the a true DIY spirit. GINGER WILDHEART AND PLEDGEMUSIC.COM Last summer Ginger Wildheart, frontman of The Wildhearts and prolific solo artist, launched a campaign through the pledgemusic website to fund the recording of a three CD set gathering new material, and a few lost tracks, and rather than raising 100% of his target, Ginger and the site raised 555% of it! Now, a year later, he has launched a new campaign to fund two new records, the double set Mutation and the single disc Hey-Hello, which promise to combine the heaviest material of Ginger’s career with some of his popiest (ABBA meets Sex Pistols sounds like a great idea to me). This new pledge campaign has continued the mix of social media communication and traditional studio work with Twitter interaction and regular ‘making of’ updates including great footage of The

TANTALE – THE KNOWN ELEMENTS

A couple of years ago Tantale appeared in Guernsey with a sound slightly different from anyone else. They showcased their unique and interesting sound winning the 2010 Battle of the Bands, earning a slot at the 2011 Vale Earth Fair and recording an EP. Now Tantale are releasing their full-length debut, which saw them head over to the UK and produce a very professional sounding album. Across 11 tracks we get a flavour of what has seen this band rise so fast with great musicianship on display, however, despite their obvious talent, there seems to be something missing from this album that made their EP so exciting. On the album, Tantale have taken their schizophrenic indie-grunge elements and sanded down and polished up the raw edges to such a degree that the sense of innovation behind their sound has been lost somewhere in transition. This makes for an album that, while it had my head nodding, at no point made me sit up with that air of excitement that I love in a new record. While Tantale’s debut album sounds good, and certainly shows that this band are no slouches on their instruments, it lacks that spark that I had been hoping for. TOM

WHERE DID IT ALL GO WRONG POP MUSIC. Has there ever been a more ambiguous title? What began in the 1950’s as a form of “rock’n’roll” has somehow developed into dub-step. Granted, it has taken over sixty years, but to go from hipshaking blues based guitar music to this grotesque glorified wobble board emulating tripe, that isn’t nearly long enough. The question is how could the masses be so fickle? How could things have gotten this bad? Todays definition paints a bleak picture - ‘Music of general appeal to teenagers; a bland watereddown version of rock ‘n’ roll with more harmony and emphasis’. An honest reflection on todays charts that, in my opinion, could even be too kind. Some processed beats, auto-tune (imperative) with a dodgy synth riff that sounds like you are starting up your GameBoy Advance and you are well on your way to a number one hit. It feels like we are a world away from the glory days of pop music. Though some would say similarly contrived (it is pop music after all) record labels like Motown and their entourage of superbly talented songwriters really had it sussed. It was manufactured, produced and ‘crafted with an ear for pop’. Strict guidelines were set such as: prominent electric bass lines, distinctive melodic chord structures and call-and-response singing styles originated in gospel music. It was all similar to how labels run today but it was actually good. REALLY GOOD. Obviously this couldn’t have lasted forever. Music moves with the times and you’re probably thinking that is the answer to this question. What’s wrong with pop music is the people listening to it. But I disagree. The problem is the record labels who are audacious enough to think they know what the public want. A handful of fat businessmen sitting around a table who claim they know exactly what you want to listen to. And what do they give us? Justin Beiber and One Direction. Motown produced poetic and emotive music; their songwriters struggle to construct one working sentence without an ‘ooh’ or an ‘ahhh’. The fact of the matter is they have no idea what the public want and neither do we. There is no possible way of knowing, and that is the beauty of it. The best movements were always totally unexpected and that’s what we need right now. No more committees, just people going with their hearts and what feels right. So fingers crossed, sooner rather than later, an exciting new wave of bands and artists will emerge to give the general public their integrity back. If not, we’ll have to call on Rolf Harris to give these guys a lesson with a wobble board. TYLER

J:Mad places…the madder the spot the weirder to play, the best sort of place would be quite small with a huge sound system. A mad place was at Bestival in Isle of Wight last year, the Arcadia Stage, 200ft metal spider; it was like playing in a suspended dustbin, filled with female flame throwers.

G: Is there any new music you are listening to right now? J: This afternoon I have been listening to Jamiroquai’s new album, first time of listening today, I just scrolled down and hit it and I would give it an 8 out of 10

G: What do you think of Fusion as a venue here in Guernsey? J: Really good, I had a good time, I liked Guernsey

G: Describe your typical weekend… J: Busy! I have been Djing in Ibiza every Friday at Space, I have the residency in the Main Room, I leave UK at 7am on a Friday, arrive Ibiza 5pm, start set at 3am, back to Ibiza Airport at 8am, arrive UK afternoon, caught Ferry to Portsmouth straight away to DJ at Isle of Wight Festival at Midnight then back to London Sunday to produce mix for Radio1. The maddest one I was in Thailand one day, Bangkok the next, Singapore the next day, followed by Sol, Cambodia, Edinburgh, New York, Los Angeles, Oxford, Tokyo then Osaka!

G: What do you feel is your biggest achievement of your career so far? J: I am really happy with my Radio 1 Slot

JAKE BUGG AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 18, FOLK SINGER/ SONGWRITER JAKE BUGG HAS HIT THE MUSIC SCENE. AFTER BEING SPOTTED BY RADIO 1, JAKE LANDED HIS FIRST BIG DEBUT AT GLASTONBURY IN 2011 AND IS NOW SET TO SUPPORT MAJOR ACTS INCLUDING SNOW PATROL AND NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS AS WELL AS RELEASING HIS NEW ALBUM ‘JAKE BUGG’ ON OCTOBER 15TH. ON FIRST IMPRESSIONS JAKE APPEARED RESERVED BUT HIS RELAXED PERSONALITY LED TO AN INTERESTING INTERVIEW WITH NO INDICATIONS THAT HE HAD LET FAME GO TO HIS HEAD - EVEN IF WE DID INTERRUPT HIS GAME OF PING PONG WITH NINA.

We already know you are a skilled guitarist but do you have any other hidden or unusual talents? I like playing Football and Ping-Pong, but it’s not a talent as such - more of a hobby. Which musicians would you say have most inspired your own music? That’s a tough one. I think the best band is the Beatles, it goes without saying, but if I had to pick a few at random it would be Nick Drake, Donovan, Don McLean and John Martin, but its hard to pick the top ones. You have quite an ‘Oasis’ style about you would you say they have been an inspiration? Yeah definitely! I am booked to tour with Noel Gallagher in October. We met at a gig in Belfast and I met him in London. I got to see him do an acoustic set which was great at a really small gig. Do you prefer a more intimate gig or a big crowd? Ideally I would prefer the big crowd but it’s nice to keep the gigs intimate. How has the music experience been so far? Has it been all parties or a lot of hard work? I like to say ‘a lot of hard work with a lot of great perks’ so a bit of both really. What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far? That’s tough one. I supported the Stone Roses the other week that was insane, T in the park felt like a stepping-stone in my career with the crowd getting behind it and a great atmosphere. This year in general has been amazing. How many gigs have you played this year roughly? It could be hitting the 100 mark, I’m not sure. That’s a huge amount of gigs; do you ever just get time to yourself? No not really I just find it hard.

Nottingham has anything but a glowing reputation, once described as the UK’s ‘gun capital’, how did you find it growing up there? I used to live on what was the biggest council estate in Europe so it was like 30,000 people in an area half the size of Jersey. But yeah, it had its good and bad parts like any other place, but it was kind of cool. Would you consider Nottingham to have a big music scene? Yeah, it’s big and good. It’s got better over the last few years especially, it was good because I got used to playing in front of a crowd and got to develop my talents. It was there I started to play small gigs when I was around 15/16 until I got signed and the hard work started.

Lastly, we have been looking up your videos and think they are really well made, who comes up with the ideas and how do you go about making them? Ones like ‘Trouble Town’ or ‘Lightning Bolt’ is just a guy with a camera going round my estate or Amsterdam. I am not a big fan of doing performance shots where you have to walk in the street and I’m not very good at miming so I have to sing it but I find it looks better that way. Out of today’s acts, who have you most enjoyed working with? I don’t actually know many of them personally, but I know a lot of their music, I think it’s really cool! I will be going to watch Jake Bugg later because I think he’s great, also Noel Gallagher he’s great too, and Bwani Junction a band from Edinburgh, we chatted today but we are playing at the same time unfortunately, so I can’t see them.

If you could collaborate with any of them who would it be? Well of course I would like to do something with Noel Gallagher, not that it would ever happen! To finish up, on stage what would you say is the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you? Its not that embarrassing just a bit cringe worthy, at my headline gig in London I was singing ‘The Apple Tree’ the song that everyone knows and everyone was singing along and I started singing the wrong words and everyone was like ‘what you are singing is wrong’ and I thought ‘yeah and it is my song!’. I do that a lot just get lost in the moment and sing the wrong words.

Sheeran in Edinburgh and I asked him about how to be a singer songwriter and if he had any advice, he asked me to play him a song, so I did and he invited me on tour. I went around UK and Europe with him and then Example saw my cover of Stay Awake on YouTube and invited me on tour with him. I started releasing EP’s independently and having little headline tours and I guess it started growing. BBC Introducing and Radio 1 got behind it and in April I came to release ‘The Apple Tree’ which again was an independent release. Everything escalated from there, on ITunes it got to top 10 which was not what I was expecting; it peaked at number 6, got charted on the radio and made everything grow to getting signed. I decided to wait before getting signed because I wanted to do it my own way. I am signing a label in June so I can make my album that is due to come out next year around March/ April and I am releasing my single ‘BOY’ (available now!). You have already clocked amazing gigs alongside some big names, who would you say is your favourite person that you have played with? Ed and Example have been really great to me, taking me on tour, I really appreciate it. I have toured a lot with Ed and we are really close friends; we just get on really well and he gives me lots of advice. We have gone through a similar thing with starting independently and he was working away behind the scenes before he got really commercial. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

THE VALENTINES ARE A BAND OF FIVE BASED IN BRIGHTON WITH LEAD SINGER, JEGARD, ORIGINATING FROM JERSEY. THEIR UNIQUE AND FUN-LOVING PERSONALITIES CREATE AN ORIGINAL SOUND APPEALING TO THE MAJORITY. MIXING POP AND PUNK WITH A SPRINKLING OF GLITTER THEY WERE QUICKLY PICKED UP AND HAVE ALREADY PLAYED ALONGSIDE SOME PRETTY IMPRESSIVE NAMES. Choosing a name must be a difficult stage when forming a band, how did ‘The Valentines’ come about? I wanted a name that was.. well because I like doo-wop.. like the Heartbreakers and the Moonglows, I thought it was quite a romantic name, but I thought that I thought of that, but it turned out that at our very first gig we still didn’t have a name and it was Valentines Day and it was my mum actually who suggested it. When was your first gig? We have had about a million line-up changes but our very first was in Jersey at the Live Lounge in 2005. How close are your links to Jersey? I grew up here (Jersey) and my parents live here but I spent a lot of time in France growing up then I moved to London aged 18 (I am 28 now). I lived there for a bit then moved to Brighton and just advanced on from there. Did you take a lot of influence from that era? Yeah man definitely. Like 2005 I loved it man it was so cool like the Libertines were still in full flow and stuff and what was the best thing was I remember watching the ‘Libs’ on telly on Friday night with Jonathan Ross and well loved them and really hoped

yeah and it was pretty embarrassing well it would have been if I hadn’t been so damn good looking up there. We need to know but what is the tape around your leg and shoe for? I thought my, well my jeans ripped yesterday, and my heel came off my boot so I ducked taped those up and then my jeans ripped so I taped them as well seeing as I am going for the duct tape thing I put one around my wrist as like a little flourish. Some people ask why I have a tie around my wrist as well and because I ever want to flaunt convention I thought I would wear a tie anywhere but around my neck. Sometimes its around my wrist, sometimes its around my waist and sometimes its around my leg and sometimes I put it on my shoe but then it will just get messed up really. I do wear different ties; I’m not a lunatic! Are you releasing anything soon? Yeah we have an album coming out with ‘End of the Trail’ records in October/November and we kind of hope, well we have a session coming up with XFM and we kind of hope that sells the record a bit but if it doesn’t we are going to be breaking up in October and I am going to be forming a new band called ‘Medicine’. I was going to do it anyway but we are going to see how well the album does, if the album does well I am going to stay with the Valentines, if it doesn’t do as I expect then I am just going to form a new band.

I could meet them and then we ended up supporting them and hanging out with them and stuff. You know that app ‘Words with Friends’ I am playing that with Pete Doherty at the moment and I am beating him. Yeah yeah check it out *shows us phone*. I got to go stay at his house because we have the same management and our manager was like I think we should have a writing holiday you know like write some new songs, so Pete was away in Paris and he let me go stay in his house in Brookshire and it was this big massive country thing and his cats were everywhere and stuff and yeah it was great. I have one more cool story about the Libertines this is my favourite claim to fame but I er.. I actually got off with Amy Winehouse. We were supporting the Libertines at their comeback gig in Kentish Town she comes past and we go ‘hey Winehouse, alright?’ and she ignored us completely with all her minders around her - blanked us completely. Two hours later she’s off her face and we were in the hallway and I go ‘hey look there’s Winehouse again’ and go ‘you alright?’ and she says ‘hello lovely’ and just gives me a big snog. I wasn’t expecting that - her mouth was huge! Bigger than her [naughty word] head, it was like Pac Man you know. Oh! I am talking very ill of the dead here aren’t I? [Yes Jegard – yes you are] You have had a couple of performances at the festival so far, how would you say they went? It went really well we played yesterday on the SoBe stage and played the main stage today and it was really good we had a really good time. There was a bit of crowd even though it was Sunday and it was 1 o’clock and everyone there was hanging but obviously our point was to get everyone pumped up and I think we did it - but I went mental. I absolutely stacked it on the floor

Who would you say is your current fan base? It’s really polarized at the moment its like old guys who like punk music, and like woman in their 40’s who like the Ramones from the 70’s and like really young kids who like things that are really like fun and catchy. How did you go about getting your music out there? It was mainly social media we were going to put out an EP a few of years ago but we had a single ready to go and we were played on XFM, Radio 1 and stuff but the label we were in unfolded and we couldn’t ever do it so we have a bunch of recordings with nothing to do with them so we are going to record some more songs and this is what the album is going to be. Who would you say has most inspired you? I would say I have three. The first would be Suede, er maybe the Strobes and Dion Dimucci and the Belmonts. Mostly doo-wop bands; I love doo-wop. Finally, you have a very unique fashion sense but who would you say is your major fashion influence? I would say the darker end of Britpop, the way Suede used to dress, quite vampire-like, we dress kinda in black a bit. We are not dark, we are quite fun but not gothic and we are also quite punkish. I think one of coolest looking bands ever was the Ramones; jeans, converse all stars, tatty leather jackets and bowl cuts. They just looked the business. I just dress like an idiot really to be honest I mean who would wear a [naughty word] tie around their wrist.
