Now for those of you who are happily involved in long term relationships please pay attention. A new ironing board cover is not acceptable as a Valentine’s present, even though your husband might need one! Remember you’re never too old to tell someone that you love them or, better still, show them with a gift or surprise that tells them just how much you care.

Contribution Director Jodie Sheppard DD : 739854 M : 07911 766633 jodie@gallery.gg

As the saying goes, faint heart never won fair lady, so if you want to tell that someone special just how you feel about them, make a wild romantic gesture or just choose a gift to show someone how much you love them. Don’t delay any further - we have some great ideas for you in this issue.

ope you have all been looking forward to the first edition of Gallery in 2012. I know we have. With Valentine’s Day this month we are feeling all warm and fuzzy here at Gallery and have put together a special ‘flowers and chocolates’ sort of edition for you all to enjoy. In this issue we explore the origins of love and why being in love (“whatever in love means” as a famous Prince once said) is such a key factor in all of our lives from the first moment we develop feelings.

Gallery is published eleven times a year as a fresh yet discerning guide to all that happens on the Island and beyond. With quality and style in mind, our tone is not too superior or too serious, written by the people of Guernsey for people everywhere.

As for me, I have my Valentine’s Day almost sorted. I have booked a romantic candlelit table for two, a beautiful room for the night with a four poster bed followed by a champagne breakfast in the morning – not too early of course! Now how do I tell her I have spent all that money? Wish me luck. Have a fabulous Valentine’s Day from all at the loved up Gallery – WE LOVE YOU X ED

Lovesickness

The page where we share all of the things that we’ve found this month that don’t have a home anywhere else in the magazine

Saucy Sale This retailer in Japan should have done a little bit of research into the specific meanings of certain Western words before launching their latest 20% sale.

I sesame seed what you’re getting at there... A South African branch of the fast food chain Wimpy seriously made us smile when we heard them promoting their new braille menus, after watching their ad we then found out that they hand made 15 burgers with special sesame seed messages on the bun and then sent them out to the three biggest blind institutions.

Only in America...

Lovesickness describes the informal syndrome of rejected or unrequited love and covers physical as well as mental symptoms. It is not to be confused with the condition of being lovestruck. Almost all humans suffer from lovesickness one or more times in their live Puppy Love: Puppy love (also known as a crush or calf love or even "kitten love") is an informal term for feelings of love, romance, or infatuation felt by young people during their childhood and even adolescence, so-called for its resemblance to the adoring, worshipful affection that may be felt by a puppy. Obsessive Love: Obsessive love is a state in which one person feels an overwhelming obsessive desire to possess another person toward whom they feel a strong sexual attraction, with an inability to accept failure or rejection

Dante Autullo of Chicago had what he initially thought was a close shave this January as he built a shed in his garden. Firing his trusty nail gun above his head, he slipped and thought that the nail had simply grazed by his head and the gun itself given him a bit of a wallop.

When the doctor presented an x-ray, Mr Autullo asked ‘is this some kind of doctor joke you just pulled from your doctor’s joke drawer?’ to which the doctor simply replied ‘no man, that’s in your head’ according to reports from The Telegraph.

Being lovestruck is a non-medical term used to describe mental and physical symptoms associated with falling in love: 'love-struck. It means to be hit by love...you are hit in your heart by the emotion of love. Lovesick:

Sack the f**kin’ copywriter, we say...

After having a friend clean out the small puncture wound with peroxide, finishing the shed and shovelling a bit of snow for good measure he went for a nap. Waking to feel a little nauseous the next day his wife suggested they go to the hospital.

Lovestruck:

Narcissistic personality disorder: Rushing him to another hospital, surgeons successfully managed to remove the 3.75 inch nail and all of his speech and motor function has been preserved. Fancy that, missing all of the important areas of his star-spangled grey matter - what a stroke of luck. We shouldn’t be too hard on the poor bloke though, as the brain itself doesn’t contain any nerve endings so he’d not have felt the nail once it had penetrated the skull membrane. Amusing, and informative!

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder in which the individual is described as being excessively preoccupied with issues of personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity Hypopituitarism: Some individuals who claim never to have felt romantic love suffer from hypopituitarism, a rare disease that doesn’t allow a person to feel the rapture of love.

More talking dawgs.. Here at Gallery we love most 4 legged furry creatures (and certainly don’t discriminate about those blessed with less) - one resides with us most days in the office. Wouldn’t it be ideal if we could chat to them or have them talk to us sometimes? If you feel the same way about this very serious topic, then you need to meet Mishka...

Positive results for Guernsey Foster Care campaign Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society It has been confirmed that the film version of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society WILL be filmed in Guernsey and will star Kate Winslet. Renowned actor-director Kenneth Branagh was in the island at the start of the year to scout for locations. Up to five weeks of filming will take place in the island - mainly exterior scenes, with the rest shot in London. The film, likely to be called simply, ‘Guernsey’, is based on the best-selling book by author Mary Ann Schaffer. Kate would play the lead role of a writer who travels to the island and writes letters to her publisher about the members of the Potato Peel Pie book club, which was set up during the Occupation - and wasn’t quite what it seemed. The decision to film part of the production in Guernsey follows efforts by the island’s head of tourism, Jason Moriarty, who broke off part of his holiday in America last year to visit film producers in Hollywood to argue the case.

The Teenage Cancer Trust The Teenage Cancer Trust raised a total of £135,000 last year, an amazing £35,000 over their initial target of £100,000! A spokesperson said, “We could not have done this without the generosity and support of our lovely Guernsey people and we cannot thank them enough. We are thrilled that work can now start on developing the new Teenage Cancer Ward in Southampton and we are hopeful the ward will be up and running by the end of this year!” The Teenage Cancer Trust will continue their fundraising in 2012 and beyond as money is still needed to ensure the ward is complete, to maintain the ward and fund

The Family Placement Service has had an extremely encouraging response from the public following its high profile Guernsey Foster Care campaign. Sponsored by De Putron Fund Management, the campaign’s aim was to raise awareness about foster caring in Guernsey and to recruit at least 10 to 12 urgently needed foster carers, as well as fill seven residential care posts. The campaign lasted just over three months and was launched in October 2011 when 26 children were in foster care placements even though the island had a total of 69 children under the team’s care. As a result of the campaign, the Family Placement Service has now received 46 enquiries from people interested in becoming foster carers and of these, 3 have been from Alderney. The team has also received over 20 applications for 7 residential care home vacancies, 3 of which have been filled. In response to the number of initial enquiries and success of the campaign, Julie Barnes, service manager for fostering and adoption said: “This is a fantastic outcome but we are still keen to hear from people who want to help shape a child’s future by giving them a safe and secure home.” Research in the UK shows that only 10% of enquiries result in approved foster carers. “What we are doing is spending time talking to these people and if they are interested in taking their enquiry any further, we are beginning to go through the approval process to hopefully ensure that we can convert them into long and short term foster carers,” she said. All of these people have received information packs, some have had their first home visit, and 6 couples have also been booked onto the team’s “Skills 2 Foster” course later on this month with a second course arranged for March. “By increasing the number of carers this will enable us to match the needs of the child to the right carer – a luxury that has been rather sparse on the island over recent years. “I anticipate that we will have more initial visit requests once people have read the information and have had a little more time to consider becoming a foster carer,” said Mrs Barnes. If you are interested in becoming a foster carer or would like to have an informal talk with one of the team, contact 713230 or email change@guernseyfostercare.com. For further information, please visit www.guernseyfostercare.com.

Sports Personality of the Year The Sportingbet Sports Personality of the Year Awards celebrates excellence in sport and is back this year being hosted in Jersey at the Hotel de France on the 26th January. Jeremy Frith, Thomas Greechan, Serena Guthrie, Alison Merrien and Lee Merrien all feature, and the event will recognize young sports stars, coaches and teams from both islands. Watch out for the nominee profiles which will be showcased on Channel Report in the run up to the event. There are a few places left for the black tie gala dinner, at which British tennis star Tim Henman will be the guest speaker.

Arts Sunday returns to St Peter Port The Guernsey Arts Commission is set for another busy year in 2012 and one of the highlights will be the second Arts Sunday on St Peter Port Seafront on Sunday 17th June. In 2011 Arts Sunday showcased a range of arts from performance and music to painting and poetry and this year we want to make it even bigger. “To do that we are offering local artists and arts organisations a chance to have a table in the Arts Market to let people know what they do and where they do it, or sell their work. We are also looking for anyone interested in running a workshop on the day, in any artistic discipline, or performing on one of three stages highlighting the breadth of performing arts taking place on the island”. Arts Sunday is once again being organised by the Guernsey Arts Commission’s Music and Performing Arts Sub-Committees. Hannah Beacom, who chairs the Performing Arts Sub-Committee, says: “We are keen to build on the success of last year’s Arts Sunday. We would like to hear from any organisation or company working within the Arts. We are keen to showcase the best Guernsey has to offer. “There will be performance spaces, workshop areas and an Arts Market. This will give organisations the chance to showcase their skills, promote themselves or sell arts related products.” If you want a place in the Arts Market, or if you are interested in performing or running a workshop, please contact Russ Fossey, Chair of the Music Sub-Committee on russ@arts.gg

Well, this is awkward. It is actually quite uncommon and you might want to have that checked out. Don’t be shy, it really doesn’t happen to a lot of people.

Aquarius January 20 -February 18

Pisces February 19 -March 20

You are a serial kitten-killer and one day you will do time for your crimes: every time you tell a lie, a kitten dies.

Happy Valentine’s Day words | Theo Leworthy Illustration | Helina Mathews

Well, it’s that time of year again. The single among us are divided into two categories: pathetic and dangerous. Will you be sitting at home this Valentine’s Day, sobbing into a cold tin of baked beans, your mournful wail informing the neighbourhood of your status as an emotional and sexual failure? Or will you be exercising your desperation in an altogether more sinister manner? Stalking the bars, frantically offering to buy members of the opposite sex vodka and cokes in what can only be described as borderline sexual harassment? It’s not just single people that suffer on Valentine’s Day. Perhaps you’re in a new relationship, the flowers of young love blossoming gently about your teenage brow. Remember, you will be judged on your performance today. Which would be fine if you knew how you were expected to perform, but you don’t. You have only your intuition to guide you in deciding upon two very important things: first, what does love mean to this person? And second, how can I express to them that I feel the same? There is an overwhelming chance that you will get both of the answers wrong. Even those of us who have been with their partners for years must beware the temptation to feel safe. No one is safe from St Valentine. Buy a card but don’t write profound expressions of love in it, and you’re callous and commercial. Buy a card and do write profound expressions of love in it, and it will make your partner cringe. You must decide whether you want your next sexual encounter to be tinged with pity or hatred. Through the chain texts, proclaiming with eerie certainty that your ‘wun troo luv’ will surprise you with a kiss (unless you don’t forward it, in which case the wolves of loneliness will feast upon your sexless corpse), the Jeremy Kyle ‘Who’s your daddy?’ Valentine specials, and the constant bombardment from the TV reminding us that love can be measured in presents alone, only the most unshakably innocent romantics aren’t left questioning the honesty of that seemingly sacred emotion. So, does love exist? I think it does. But is Valentine’s Day a celebration of it? I would have to say no. I don’t know much about St Valentine, but going on Valentine’s Day, I have to assume he was the Joker to Casanova’s Batman, a figure as caring and erotic as a half brick with the words ‘Eunuch Maker’ written upon it.

Scientists have discovered that men’s and women’s brains actually function somewhat differently. When focused on a task, men tend to use only one side of their brain at a time, devoting all of their attention and concentration to the task at hand. Women, on the other hand, tend to use both sides of the brain at the same time, making them more adept at “multi-tasking.”

CUPID’S ARROW

Cupid’s Arrow words | Tony Brassell

W

e all know the symbolism but how do we associate love with an arrow through the heart from some airborne assassin? Let’s set the scene first. In Roman mythology Cupid was the son of Venus (the Goddess of Love) and Mars (the God of War). Depicted as a winged nude, armed with a bow and a quiver full of Golden arrows, the story goes that he was sent by a jealous Venus to shoot the beautiful Psyche with a Golden Arrow to make her fall in love with something horrible. This was a punishment for being so lovely that her people adored her more than the Goddess of Love herself. Nice eh! Anyway stupid Cupid cut himself with one of his own arrows and became besotted with Psyche and then ran away. To cut a long story short, after a long search for Cupid, during which Psyche was made immortal to give her more time to find him, they married and she was granted Goddess status and they lived happily ever after – well, something like that. In Latin Cupid is called Amor and strangely Amo, to love, is one of

24

only two Latin verbs I recall from several years of study. Bello, to war, is the other! So there they are again, Love and War. We know that “all is fair in Love and War” and, to emphasise that, in some stories Cupid was also armed with steel tipped arrows as well as his gold tipped versions to kill as well as infatuate. But what about these golden arrows? Well they, it seems, are meant to represent the human emotions of love and desire. By piercing the heart of his target with a golden arrow he makes them fall in love. Of course if a real love arrow were to hit you in the heart, you would be pretty angry and blood red would be the colour of your love and that love would probably be fatal. And there is that odd link again. Red is the colour of love, we give red roses and cards with red hearts but red is also the colour of danger, blood, sin and rage. How often do we hear how close the gap is between love and hate. Scientists from the University of London apparently have actually proved that

the same bit of the brain is used for both love and hate, which probably explains how both emotions can lead to such odd behaviour. It would also explain why so many people end up in court after fighting over a loved one. Let’s hope that this Valentine’s Day brings more love than hate to your heart and if you are feeling a bit low remember that one overriding motto given to us by the Roman Poet Virgil, Omnia Vincit Amor Love Conquers All.

“BY PIERCING THE HEART OF HIS TARGET WITH A GOLDEN ARROW HE MAKES THEM FALL IN LOVE”. GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

I

n this generation where women are competing in what would have previously been a man’s world, they are constantly juggling jobs and juveniles, whilst also placating stressed partners or husbands, in the vain hope of maintaining a calm & relatively peaceful household! Life is not always easy for us overworked, underpaid, often undervalued and over stretched women! We may have read about, or indeed remembered, the great female revolt where bras were burned and rallies organised in the name of equality, but I defy any women who would turn their back on a little romance from time to time! An affectionate word, an act of kindness or a moment of passion is often all it takes to keep us happy! But as we delve through the history books, it is clear that men did not always treat their ladies with the love and respect they

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

English soldiers drafted from their regiments were garrisoned in Castle Cornet. By the 18th century there was a dire need for better accommodation within the fortress, and the upper and lower barracks were built around this time. Soldiers’ wives were able to apply to be part of six official families, eligible to accompany their husbands to the castle, in order to maintain a family life. Thinking they had won a lottery, the women were not always prepared for the harsh conditions they found themselves in. Records show that some were abused, some were beaten and others abandoned. Many found themselves taken into the Workhouse (now the Police Station) alone, frightened and without the means to get back to their homes in England. Camp Followers were women who were attracted by the presence of a garrison. They were often ladies of ill repute, who were happy to offer entertainment to the soldiers who were alone and without their wives! Conversely, those soldiers who were not offered accommodation in Castle Cornet, were more than happy to live en famille in Cornet Street or Cliff Street, where many of the buildings in that vicinity were boarding houses, public houses or brothels! Manning the fifteen Loop Holed towers built to defend the shores against Napolean in 1778 was a pretty thankless task! The job often fell to the volunteer Guernsey militia men who, understandably, would have preferred to have been bringing in the crops or sailing the high seas! But it has been suggested

that the Guernsey soldiers could exercise a loop hole in the law (although that is not where the name comes from, but rather from the regular slits all around the tower from which the muskets would have been fired). It was possible to recruit a replacement to cover his shift in the tower, and who did he suggest? His wife of course! Divorce was unheard of during the time we were under feudal laws. During the medieval period women certainly had few rights, especially if they were in an unhappy marriage. However, it has been said that women could excise one very important “Relationship Right” if she felt there was no other way to rid herself of her cruel or errant husband! The woman could formerly state that her husband was not performing adequately! She would have to be prepared to swear, under oath, that her husband was not adhering to her every whim in the boudoir! The poor man would have to attend court, where, it was alleged, he was publically stripped and “vigorously examined by 13 chosen women, to ascertain if the allegations were true” Whilst some men reading this would be grinning innately at the thought of being examined by a group of more than a dozen women, one has to be aware that the poor wife had to ensure she won her case. Therefore, she was able to choose the 13 women who would examine her husband! Rest assured they were old, fat, toothless and far from worrying about tending to their personal hygiene! Men, you have been warned! Annette Henry organises guided tours throughout the year, details of which can be found on her web site - www.annettehenrytours.gg

FACEBOOK: FRIEND OR FOE? LOVE OR WOE?

words | Nick Mollet

Friend or Foe? Love or Woe?

T

he Guernsey Grapevine is rife on Facebook. FB is portrayed as a godsend and lifesaver to some islanders. Guernsey gossip is notorious and if you want to know what Torteval resident Ethel Torode ate last night or what Daphne Le Patourel from Vale thinks of her neighbours then FB is a forum that will provide answers. But is the social utility with more than 800 million active users, really safe or dangerous to use, especially in a small community like Guernsey, where if you don’t know somebody you will know someone who does? Some Guerns merely deem it a glorified gossip monsters’ site and a magnet for ridicule and hatred. ‘Just remember to never post anything you would not say on News at 10,’ warns one Guernsey donkey. ‘I personally love FB. As a single parent, I actually think it has saved my life. Once my daughter is in bed there is no-one to talk to. I am a very sociable person but I suffer with anxiety and depression, including panic attacks,’ says one Guernsey mother, who has used dating site Zoosk. ‘The beauty of FB is there is always someone there, anytime, day or night. We all have busy lives and phone conversations are a thing of the past. It’s like anything; there are risks and dangers. Any dating website has these. You just have to have your wits about you and stay safe. I only ever told people my first name, never gave them my phone number and never became their friend on FB unless I had actually met them.’ Her main concerns are photos’ privacy, her daughter’s safety and potential future bullying.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

‘I have personally only had a problem with a handful of people ‘ganging up on me’ online but I just blocked the leader and all is fine now. I prefer to praise in public and criticise in private but clearly not everyone was brought up like me. I think FB is great. I’ve even sold and bought some great items on there too. Everything comes with a risk, just be safe and if you are unsure, don’t do it.’ FB is helpful if you want to find out what’s occurring in your backyard, how Guernsey FC are faring in the UK or you’re looking to discover if a friend has survived a tsunami abroad. There are definitely Guerns with FAD (Facebook Addiction Disorder) – and unfortunately some feel no shame in poking fun at neighbours, enemies, expartners or using it as a front for criminal activity. Reputedly more than 60% of men and women have used it to stalk their ex and US studies cite it as being responsible for 1 in 5 divorces. But is FB dating and flirting good, bad or sad? It has made chatting up and meeting people easier and some islanders have found love and marriage. But as quick as one can be walking down the aisle one minute, an innocuously posted photo of a drunken night out can lead to a divorce court trip. ‘The world has become a smaller place now since Twitter, FB and all other social networks started,’ says one prominent local DJ. ‘Facebook is great for a commercial campaign or for winding your friends up about things. It goes too far when people start posting real-life situations and photos of their dinner onto their page. I believe these people are addicted to FB. It should be used as a virtual platform, not a way of life.’ One Guernsey woman, who has MS, says: ‘I spend a lot of my time on FB – it keeps me occupied, so for the disabled I would say it is a godsend. We have friends all over the world – it is good for me.’

mother criticises a tool which has become such a public domain that some people use it to cause distress, especially by untimely posts. Luckily, she managed to contact a close relative in America before an RIP tribute to her son went on FB. ‘Imagine how soul destroying that would have been if she’d read it. This is where FB lets us down – we have no protection whatsoever,’ she says. ‘The public also trust that people couldn’t be so thoughtless, but it’s human nature to be first for anything.’ ‘I use FB all the time to spread the word of what I’m doing. Also if I need any help for the charity a request on FB normally means people leap to help,’ says one local charities’ founder. Another regular local female FB user believes getting rid of the ‘status update’ text box and the ‘wall’ text box would help so any conversations are all private. ‘Quite often you see people’s statuses that are aimed to hurt people and humiliate them, make them feel low. It can cause arguments and have disastrous effects,’ she warns. ‘People can feel bullied and intimidated and people use it to boast and attention seek. FB can cause a lot of problems within relationships with people flirting. The ‘poke’ button is just ridiculous. Careless statuses or being tagged in pictures can cause problems in families and in workplaces.’ Why do so many Guerns want to broadcast they are single and who cares if they have just completed a 4.25 mile jog, lost 2lbs on a New Year’s diet, they are skint or their kidneys are drying out? Love it or loathe it – Facebook is here to stay. Big Brother is watching you all and if you want the rest of Guernsey to know your or other peoples’ business you know where to go and also what not to do!

Some islanders feel comfort and believe it is therapeutic when RIP tributes to a loved one are posted, but one Guernsey 27

LOVE HURTS

LOVE

HURTS

words | Caroline Mauger

UPFRONT

WE’RE LED TO BELIEVE THAT LOVE EQUATES TO HAPPINESS, BUT THROUGHOUT MY LIFE I’VE EXPERIENCED DIFFERENT KINDS OF LOVE AND, FOR THE MOST PART, THEY MADE ME FEEL PRETTY LOUSY.

>> The Celebrity Crush I say ‘crush’, but for many a young teen this is Real Love. You formulate a plan for capturing the attention and heart of your beloved, and finding out that he or she is in a relationship is wounding. The object of my obsession was Adam Ant (showing my age there) and my bedroom walls and ceiling were plastered with every poster and magazine cutting I could get my hands on. After reading in Smash Hits that Adam enjoyed visiting the Science Museum, I persuaded my parents to take the family to London and clutched my autograph book as I trailed around the dinosaur exhibit, looking out for my crush. He wasn’t there that day – perhaps otherwise engaged with a woman not clad in a training bra and pedal pushers. I’m still partial to a mild celeb crush – for the duration of a film, or when Matthew Macfadyen’s velvety voice urges me to ‘dine in for two’.

>> Unrequited Love Eliciting similar feelings to the Celebrity Crush, this time it’s worse because it’s personal. And if you still love someone who dumped you, the pain is physical, like a punch in the stomach. Compared to bereavement it’s ‘grief lite’ but at its worst it is a form of mourning: your loved one may be living and breathing but they are out of your life, and if they’re parading your replacement around Town it’s humiliating too. I’ve had my heart broken twice: my Mum gave me avocadoes and tomatoes because that’s all I could face eating; I just wanted to hibernate until it didn’t hurt so much. I’m thankful this was before texting and Facebook, as technology increases the likelihood of making a fool of yourself. A little dignity goes a long way: try to keep yours. That was the advice my Dad gave me when he found me jumping on a framed gold disc prized by a cheating ex. Once we’d cleaned up the broken glass I agreed he was right, though I can’t honestly say I regret it.

>> Married Love

>> Parental Love As I held my newborn daughter in my arms the realisation dawned that this tiny scrap of humanity held the key to my future happiness. The first time I took her out in her pram, I was scared someone would try to steal her – the world became a much scarier place. Love for your children is visceral, unconditional and terrifying: they need you but you need them to be OK. Whoever said ‘You’re only as happy as your saddest child’ was right. Parenthood is impossible to get right all the time, so it’s also a recipe for feeling like a failure. Why do I find myself yelling at my children to ‘Stop SHOUTing!’ when I’d hoped to be the sort of mother who suggests doing crafts together and kicking leaves in the park? Luckily all the worry and nagging is outweighed by bursts of pride and joy: you just have to acquire the knack of noticing, and celebrating, every little reminder that having children is the best thing you’ll ever do.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

Married love: so good I did it twice. I’ll gloss over the first as it ended badly (not least for the gold disc). Second time around it has brought stability, acceptance and a sense of peace into my life. This is a positive thing but if The Happy Marriage were made into a film – spiced up with minor arguments about ‘your mother’ and some toenail clippings left on the carpet - you wouldn’t be queuing up to watch it. Why do you think so many married women love The Twilight Saga? It’s not because we care about the tension between vampires and werewolves or fancy our chances with Robert Pattinson. It’s just so gloriously romantic: the yearning, the anticipation, the slow burn. The fear that a kiss could result in ‘losing control’. The date on which your love serenades you on the piano before whisking you up a fir tree. If your marriage is like this, you probably married a vampire after all – good for you.

I recently read Delirium by Lauren Oliver, in which love was considered to be a disease and a cure was found. Needless to say, the society which evolved was no utopia. Love is not all hearts and flowers and it makes the strongest of us vulnerable. Yet to experience life’s highs you have to risk the lows. Each knock-back, each day when you feel your world is falling apart – it’ll make you more resilient, more compassionate and more appreciative of true love when it comes along. Love is worth the fall.

ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE AND WAR!

1. Have dinner ready.

Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they get home and the prospect of a good meal is part of the warm welcome needed.

2. Prepare yourself.

Take 15 minutes to rest so you’ll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of workweary people.

3. Clear away the clutter.

Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives. Run a dustcloth over the tables.

4. Minimize all noise.

At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Encourage the children to be quiet.

5. Prepare the children.

words | Lauran Vohmann

Once upon a time, there were certain ways a woman was expected to treat her man, even in the 1950’s, after the women had done all the hard graft during the war. Here’s a few vintage wife tips:

Take a few minutes to wash the children’s hands and faces if they are small, comb their hair, and if necessary, change their clothes. They are little treasures and he would like to see them playing the part.

6. Listen to him.

You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first - remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours.

7. Don’t greet him with complaints.

Don’t complain if he’s late for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through at work.

8. Make him comfortable.

Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or lie him down in the bedroom. Have a cool or warm drink ready for him.

9. Don’t ask him questions.

Remember, he is the master of the house and as such will always exercise his will with fairness and truthfulness. You have no right to question him.

10 Make the evening his.

Never complain if he does not take you out to dinner or to other places of entertainment; instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure, his need to be home and relax.

The goal: Try to make your home a place of

QUIRKY GIFTS OF LOVE

Quirky Gifts of Love words | Mercedes Black

I give you the moon

You can look at this Valentine’s gift for the rest of your life! This ultimate romantic gift package includes two acres, which are side-byside, in the Moon’s unique Lake of Dreams or Lacus Somniorum .(The Latin name was given to this feature by Ricciol an Italian astronomer). It is allegedly one of the most sought after locations on Earth’s nearest celestial neighbour. Your property ownership gift package includes a beautifully engraved and personalized parchment deed, a satellite photograph of the property and an information sheet detailing the geography of your region.

A rose by any other name

Send her a rose that lasts a lifetime. A real rose preserved and plated in platinum. Regular roses fade in days but these platinum dipped roses will last and be treasured by her forever. Each rose is preserved under the metal so it will last for years and is also made stiff and strong by the process so it is not too fragile to touch or hold. Order a platinum rose delivered to her doorstep with your personalized message on a card in a nice gift box.

Crystalised iPhone 4/4S Do you love anyone enough? Giving away your last Rolo is a clear declaration of undying love in anyone’s book. For this reason the silver ‘My Last Rolo’ really is the ultimate romantic present. The exact replica of the chocolate caramel cup comes in a lovely presentation box making it a great keepsake.

Though iPhone 4/4S have already got their due share of ‘bling’ versions, Crystal Rocked now offer a full iPhone luxury package which instantly turns your iPhone into an eye catching gadget. This is a 24ct Gold or Chrome plated back plate which replaces the existing one to turn the phone instantly into a scintillating piece of art. Available from Harrods - bring on the bling.

For star crossed lovers. This is the gift with a stellar quality which will always be remembered.

Private Island Life

My personal favourite (hint hint )… This Valentine’s Day forget about chocolates and flowers, gadgets, moon and stars and give your special someone what they really want and deserve, an amazing trip to Jumby Bay, a Rosewood Resort on a private island in the Caribbean. This is the ideal gift to give this Valentine’s Day. Love is meant to be cherished and celebrated so what are you waiting for? Jumby Bay is waiting for you! Divine!

There is such a thing as Twitter Addiction. It’s official. There are symptoms…

Is the @ key on your laptop or smartphone starting to fade? Do you feel that newsworthy events haven’t really happened if they aren’t on Twitter? Do you secretly still think that adding ‘tw’ to words to ‘twitterise’ them is clever? Have you tweeted a photograph of your food before eating it, at least once? Do you ask people what their Twitter name is within minutes of meeting them? Do you tweet on holiday? Does the fail whale make you anxious? Have you ever googled ‘Twitterholics Anonymous’? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you could be at risk of becoming a twitterholic. But why do people love Twitter so much? It could be that it isn’t just for the tech-savvy. It is uncomplicated and accessible, allowing a huge range of people to participate. This makes Twitter a fascinating, voyeuristic, information and entertainment-rich forum. Everyone’s experience of Twitter is different because you tailor it to suit your needs by only following people who interest you. In a world where we are over-stimulated with electronic information, tweeting is short and straight to the point. There is no room for waffle.

Celebrities

Derren Brown (@DerrenBrown) eccentric illusionist, mentalist and writer, also known for being a prolific blogger and painter.

Davina McCall (@ThisisDavina) much loved British television presenter, best known for hosting Big Brother in the UK until its move to Channel 5.

Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) American actor, producer, former model and comedian, currently starring in Two and a Half Men.

Phillip Schofield (@Schofe) British television personality, best known for presenting This Morning, Dancing on Ice and popular game show, The Cube.

With that in mind, this month’s Gallery twitterati focuses on people who are compelled to share the Twitter love. A lot.

TOP TIPS

for getting more Twitter followers TWEET PHOTOS - sometimes a picture will say more than 140 characters ever can. #FF – get on the Follow Friday bandwagon, recommend other Twitter users to your followers.

Oscar Puffin (@oscarpuffin)

HASH TAG – use existing hash tags or invent new ones to help potential followers find you.

although fairly new to Twitter, Oscar seems to have taken to it like a duck (or puffin) to water.

RT – retweet things you find interesting (it’s a nice compliment to the original tweeter and might earn you a follow).

PR guru, chairman of many things and eloquent tweetist.

TWEET OFTEN – your followers will thank you and encourage others to follow you.

ou probably wont meet a more positive person than Lenny. Which is why when he says he is going to do something he doesn’t let much stand in his way. His eternal optimism, wonder and general exuberance can indeed border on the annoying when on a Monday morning, staring into the bleak abyss of the coming week, Lenny seems like he is on drugs. He has an unending child-like wonder about the world around him. Everything has a story and everything should be explored. It makes it hard to imagine him suffering the same

kind of crippling inertia and feelings of existential pointlessness as normal people (That is normal right??). It’s this wonder that led him to the MakeA-Day project where he made one object or realised a concept everyday for 180 days. It all started with those projects where people take a picture of themselves everyday. He wanted to do something similar but couldn’t really bear to look at his face that much. With a propensity to tinker, craft and make things regardless, it seemed like a natural step to extend this into a bigger project. Over that time he has made all sorts of things; iphone

I’d like to think there’s a time in everyone’s life when they’ve found themselves hopelessly wrapped up in something a film, a book, making a spider’s web out of spun sugar.

Learning stuff is always the biggest success. The next biggest success is remembering all the stuff you learned

Tips for your own Make-A-Day project 1) Start today. You know all those things you’ve been meaning to do? This will make you do them. In fact it’ll make you wish you had more things you meant to do. 2) Embrace the internet – it is your friend and will tell you anything you might need to know, even if it is a little hard to understand sometimes. 3) Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, and if you hate making mistakes, then this is the therapy you need. 4) Set yourself some reasonable goals - don’t promise yourself the moon, it’ll take too long to make (although I heard about this guy who made the earth in under a week). 36

chargers, stick boats, drawings, sand sculptures, model spaceships, light paintings, the list goes on. When an idea struck, Lenny got making (and he has a lot of ideas so there’s never a creative block to get in the way). Electronics was one of the more complicated subjects as he had to master both the practical and theoretical elements. One really cool project was how to make printed circuit boards. Apparently you can do this by ironing a laser printed image of a circuit onto a small, copper clad sheet of fiberglass, then dipping the board in acid. The toner from the laser print masks areas of the copper and the rest is etched away. The copper that remains are your wires and you just need to drill holes in the board at the right junctions and solder on components. Once mastered, he continued making boards; improving, experimenting and expanding on ideas with each new board. For Lenny, the best thing about Make-a-Day is the total immersion. ‘I’d like to think there’s a time in everyone’s life when they’ve found themselves hopelessly wrapped up in something – a film, a book, making a spider’s web out of spun sugar. Forcing yourself into this state always pays massive dividends. If you haven’t had that feeling for a long time, you can really miss it. It can seem like the last time you remember laughing uncontrollably’. As you can imagine it wasn’t all plain sailing and on day 100 after a week of struggling every day to get something finished but overcome with the realisation that the next milestone was long way off he picked up some dice, thinking he could just about manage to devise a game. After half an hour he had nothing, so arrived at a compromise and the game he made was this, ‘If I throw a six, I’ll stay up really late and make something huge’. He rolled a three, vowed never to be so rubbish again and went to bed.

Each month members of the Guernsey Literary Festival committee will be recommending some of our favourite reads. This month: love stories. words | Caroline Mauger youngest daughter, has been forbidden to marry, condemned by Mexican tradition to care for her mother until she dies. The History of Love by Nicole Krauss

Leo Gursky is just about surviving life in America, tapping his radiator to let his upstairs neighbour know he’s still alive, drawing attention to himself at the milk counter of Starbucks. But life wasn’t always like this: sixty years ago in the Polish village where he was born, Leo fell in love with a young girl called Alma and wrote a book in honour of his love. And although he doesn’t know it, that book also survived: it crossed oceans and generations, and changed lives. The History of Love is a captivating story of the power of love, of loneliness and of survival, with plenty of earthy humour and sadness to take you on an enchanting and emotional journey from war-time Poland to present day New York. (Catriona Stares – Festival Director)

The second novel from the author of the Richard-and-Judy-recommended Sister. A school is on fire and Grace sees the smoke and runs into the burning building: she knows her teenage daughter Jenny is inside. Narrated by Grace, talking to her husband while her body lies in a coma, this novel is a twist on a ‘whodunnit’ as Grace tries to find the identity of the arsonist and protect her family from the person who’s still intent on destroying them. She must fight the limits of her physical strength and discover the limitlessness of love. A beautiful exploration of the mother-child relationship. (Wendy Fothergill – Festival Volunteer)

Guernsey Photography Festival 2012 Put these dates in your diary: the third Guernsey Photography Festival will be taking place from 24 May–22 June 2012. This year’s Festival is centred around the theme of ‘Journey’ and, just like last year, you can expect a fascinating variety of indoor and outdoor photography exhibitions throughout St Peter Port as well as a month-long programme packed full of talks, workshops, film screenings and competitions, including the hugely popular Photomarathon. Watch this space for the latest news on the world-renowned photographers who will be exhibiting in 2012 – many of whom will be visiting the island to discuss their work. The Festival Committee can reveal that an emerging talent who will definitely be coming to Guernsey is Kiana Hayeri, the winner of the 2011 Festival Competition. Kiana’s winning entry, ‘May God be with you, my daughter’, explores the emotional journeys of Iranian teenage girls as they leave their home country in hope of a better future. You’ll be able to see this exhibition as well as the Journey project she was commissioned to undertake. Kiana moved to Canada in 2005 but is currently in Iran working on this; if you take a peek at her website you’ll see some other work she’s just produced. ‘City of Contrasts’ is a striking portrayal of present-day Iran, and shows the complexity of a rapidly changing society. This valentines day why not light the candles, slip into something more comfortable, and reach for one of our Gallery Classics! words | Mercedes Black

It was a classic Love Story... There she was left alone holding The Notebook on a street in Casablanca. Her thoughts and feelings were written on each page. The page torn out had already Gone with the Wind. As irretrievable as the past few weeks, the memories floated down the street like a Ghost. His words haunted her. “It’s Complicated” he had said. It had been an Affair to Remember. She could still remember his Body Heat from the night before. She wanted to be Closer to him again. Now he was Out of Sight. It had been a Crazy, Stupid, Love. He had made A Perfect Getaway before she had woken. The note he left had one word, “Ciao”. As The Reader of this note, she silently sobbed, her Basic Instinct under these cruel circumstances. She had been New in Town. The relationship had started with a Blind Date and she had been Enchanted by him. She had felt that it had been Love Actually, although he disagreed at the end. He was What Women Want, a single, financially independent and attractive man and she was a Pretty Woman. “The Perfect Man”, she had thought. He was An Officer and a Gentleman of the Royal Guard. Of the 50 First Dates that she had experienced she had believed that this one would last at least until Valentine’s Day! It had lasted 9 1/2 weeks only. Now it was Twilight. She had been walking aimlessly all day. It was A Walk to Remember. There would not be The Proposal she had hoped for like most of her friends who had Just Married. No Wedding Planner? The Wedding Date she had toyed with in her head would never happen. No Bridesmaids. The Ugly Truth was that it had been their Last Night together, The Last Kiss they would share. He had been a Heartbreaker, just like her friends had warned her. “He’s Not That Into You”, they had said. Was this As Good As it Gets? What is The Thing called Love? She felt a Titanic sense of loss. Sadly she turned to face the flight home alone back to Washington. She would be Sleepless in Seattle.

Casablanca – 1942

Casablanca has it all - adventure, patriotism, suspense, witty dialogue, a terrific ensemble cast, and a passionate romance.

Dirty Dancing – 1987

Guilty pleasure: Fluffy, schmaltzy and predictable, this coming of age tale, set at a turning point of American culture, is extremely enjoyable due to erotic dancing and Oscar-winning tunes.

Pretty Woman - 1990 Takes the Disney Princess and puts her in the real world, creating a chick flick with a little bit of edge, a whole lot of heart and even more chemistry between the film’s two leads.

Titanic – 1997

Extravagant, exhilarating, devastating, poetic, romantic and totally unforgettable, Titanic is an extraordinary achievement in film making, where technology astounds, yet the human story shines even brighter.

Love Actually – 2003

Despite its naivety, this is one of the most beautiful and heart warming movies to come around in years...

“P.S. I Love You”, she whispered, “Remember Me”. Love Story 1970, The Notebook, Casablanca 1942, Gone with the Wind 1939, Ghost 1990, It’s Complicated 2009, An Affair to Remember 1957, Body Heat 1981, Closer 2004, Out of Sight 1998, Crazy, Stupid Love 2011, A Perfect Getaway 2009, Ciao 2008, The Reader 2008, Basic Instinct 1992, New in Town 2009, Blind Date 1987, Enchanted 2007, Love Actually 2003, What Women Want 2000, Pretty Woman 1990, The Perfect Man 2005, An Officer and a Gentleman 1982, 50 First Dates 2004, Valentine’s Day 2010, 9 ½ weeks 1986, Twilight 2008, A Walk to Remember 2006, The Proposal 2009, Just Married 2003, Bridesmaids 2011, Wedding Planner 2001, The Wedding Date 2005, The Ugly Truth 2009, Last Night 2010, The Last Kiss 2006, Heartbreaker 2010, He’s Not That Into You 2009, As Good as it Gets 1997, The Thing called Love 1993, Titanic 1997, Sleepless in Seattle 1993, P.S. I Love You 2007, Remember Me 2010.

The love of travel goes hand in hand with the joy of escapism, and like all heady cravings, is potentially addictive. Those feel-good chemicals powered by the anticipation of a trip are deliciously intoxicating. Hands down, it’s been my guilty pleasure since I began to walk. One of my earliest memories is of lying on the lawn one Summer’s day gazing at the jet trails far above and dreaming of being aboard the plane.

Our wonderful planet is teeming with bucket-list-type destinations and opportunities: tropical islands, snowy cabins with log fires, sleigh rides pulled by huskies, champagne hot-air balloon flights, weekends in cities, swimming with dolphins, whale watching, the flickering of fireflies in the night air, river cruising, snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef, hiking in a tropical rainforest, 4 x 4ing in the desert, off-piste skiing, walking the crater of a volcano and so on … and I’ve ticked them off over the years yet I’m still not satisfied. The urge to roam usually gets in the way of regular life though and few people understand the compulsion to jump on a boat/plane/train/bus with rarely a plan once you’ve arrived. Sometimes the mundanities of life become claustrophobic - or there’s a 24-hour ticket sale to Timbuktu - and the need to “get away” suddenly overwhelms. It takes a special type of partner to appreciate the spontaneity that afflicts nomads and the Sagittarian-influenced.

44

Most “normal” folk consider us irresponsible or crazy. Few husbands would be happy, for example, if their wives booked three months off to bum around India Alone! The travel bug has bitten me so hard that even while I’m at an exotic location: It’s simply not enough. I’m compelled to visit travel agencies to view potential side-trips and always get chatting to the locals to find out where they like to go. This has led to some unusual adventures and to places tourists rarely get to see. I’ve even been to places based merely on the sound of the name (rather like buying a bottle of wine because you fancy the label). Like Candidasa in Bali, and Kandy in Sri Lanka, both worth the gamble as it happened. And when I lived in New Orleans, I loved showing visitors the hidden gems where musicians like Keanu Reeves would jam unadvertised. With no fixed itinerary, it’s easy to be flexible. Yet, I never rule out package tours completely, as it often means a cheaper airfare, free transfers and a hotel, even if you stay just the first night. You may wind up finding an apartment and staying a couple of years … like I once did on a package holiday from New York to Malaga! Travel doesn’t need to be crippling expensive either (unless, of course, you refuse to stay in lower than 5* hotels). You can subscribe to myriad websites and airlines offering fantastic deals and last minute seat sales. And instead of a bumnumbing 23 hour-flight to Sydney, for a

GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

There are places I’ve stayed in that are so much more interesting BECAUSE they don’t have star ratings, but it’s also possible to find some deluxe bargains if the timing is right. For example, after the Bali bombings, my two-year-old daughter and I were given the honeymoon suites in 5* hotels for as little as $20 a night, often as the only guests and as cheap as the backpacker’s “losmen”. My yearning for adventure has occasionally got me into trouble, although I’ve been pretty lucky this far. I remember sheltering from rebel aircraft being shot down in Sri Lanka, escaping a rogue taxi driver in Mumbai, a randy motorbike rider in Rajasthan, a Singapore stopover when the SARS epidemic broke out, etc. but the positive experiences so far outweigh the negative. I’ve experienced temperatures ranging from -35C to plus 53C, dust storms and 100% relative humidity, and never tire of the variety. Travelling as a couple isn’t fool-proof either. My former husband and I were stuck in a roadblock in Jamaica and forced to divert over rough ground towards Montego Bay Airport. So convinced we’d be stopped by guerrillas, I took off my engagement ring and hid it

in my mouth for safe keeping. When we hit a pothole I almost swallowed it! One time we were holidaying in Phuket when a local fisherman took us to the tiny island I’d noticed offshore. It was the clichéd desert island paradise. I spotted a couple of huts on stilts amongst the palm trees and persuaded my husband it would be romantic to return for an overnight stay. By dusk the problems began… there were more mosquitoes per square inch than anywhere else on the planet and Citronella had no effect on the critters. The cacophony of birdsong gave way to raucous jungle noises. Then we heard scampering as rodents started climbing into the hut.. After a completely sleepless night we were relieved to return to our airconditioned hotel room on the mainland.

There are places I’ve stayed in that are so much more interesting BECAUSE they don’t have star ratings

similar price try breaking the journey with a round-the-world ticket (reducing the jetlag too!).

One of my most romantic memories was arriving at sunset in the Maldives. Sailing off on a wooden Dhoni as the sun slipped below the horizon was absolutely mesmerising. As the boatman steered over the mirror-flat water towards the honeymoon island, I thought it was absolutely stunning. It was just a shame I was on my own.

LOVE IS MANY A SPLENDID THING

words | Ella Pritchard

Love is many a splendid thing

W

ith love diffusing through the February air we know it must be the month for Valentine’s.

Traditionally a day where lovers express their feelings for each other through the Hallmark medium of cards, it can also be a day to celebrate the love and affection between companions. Be it a friend, lover, brother, or mother, February 14th is the day for doting. I’m a great believer in the hand crafted, home-made gift. But we might not all have nimble creative fingers so some of us may turn to our purchasing power to find the perfect present for our loved one.

Love, Lust and Lingerie Yes it may be a massive commercial holiday but nonetheless it is a good reason to remind your sweetheart how special they are to you. For those romantics among us, the most intimate gift to give would be lingerie. This can be a very personal present though and should be chosen wisely. Also, it might not necessarily be the underwear itself that’s important. You could always compliment her wardrobe with nightwear pieces from slips and chemises to draped kimonos and silky dressing gowns.

The month we saw Red Valentine’s Day invokes thoughts of love hearts, sweethearts, dates and secret admirers. But, most importantly, the Valentines wardrobe trend is about the colour red. ‘Look at me!’ red shouts, as rose and pink dillydally. The primary pillar box red is bold and confident but it could be worn as a colour highlight instead of a full blown outfit.

With plenty of online stores offering beautiful pieces, from Princesse Tam Tam and Eberjey to Anthropologie and the Fleur of England, the selection is huge. Or we could stay on the beaten cobbled track and duck into Gwyneth and Grey in St Peter Port for some nightwear ideas. You could take personal element a step further with Gilda And Pearl as they provide a tailored garment service. Choose your own styles, fabrics and even initials for your perfect pieces. As long as the Chantilly lace is delicate, the ribbons are tied and you’ve a good card to match she will know that she is the apple of your eye.

If you do dare to wear rouge, select a hue which suits you. Alternatively we could move on from red and look to it’s sister shades. Hot pinks, punchy cerises and even delicate corals have connotations of warmth and passion as well. Or we might want to imitate the deep jewel colour palette from Valentino and clothe ourselves in berry purples. If you did opt for the ladybird shade maybe team it with a secondary colour to tone the outfit down, like a sandy jacket or charcoal shoes. The current dress silhouettes have nipped in waists, skater style hems and short sleeves have been added for a demure, spring look. Fluttering bird prints cover a Miu Miu gown but do not distract from the red base colour. Maybe you could dress up your jeans with a pretty bird patter blouse or invest in a botanical red floral print dress.

LOVE IS MANY A SPLENDID THING

FASHION

For those of us dressing to the nines we might want to paint the town pink with a delicate layered dress, or maybe just drape a dusty pink pash over our goose pimpled shoulders. I Heart You. This pop culture symbol of romantic love is widespread up and down the high-street. The heart can be found embroidered on jumpers, printed on t-shirts and sprinkled on hosiery. A few stores are offering hearts in a monochrome repeat print on dresses or clustered on scarves. The heart is the perfect symbol of love that can literally be worn on your sleeve.

‘Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as wool’ The arrows of Eros may have struck and you could now be anticipating the mandatory dining experience with your girl. If you are newly acquainted and it is your first outing, just be comfortable in what you wear. Opt for pieces that you know suit your style and frame and that are tried and tested for an evening out.

To replicate the feel of this nonchalant look you could invest in a smart wool pea or duffle coat as a staple piece for the cold. Maybe opt for a checked shirt under this, with slate grey jeans and desert boots. To humour the Valentine theme, burgundy is a good shade to compliment dark jeans. Percival do a slim fit jumper style with a front pocket detail that would look hot with some dark cords. Mango have set the wardrobe style stakes high though. Dusty blue brogues are being worn with skinny beige trousers, denim shirts and statement tees. They’ve also introduced chunky knit cardigans under checked jackets with leather hold-all bags.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

Take note of layers too, the more the better. If you are a true gent remember that you might be declothing to keep your date warm. 51

New Year, New look as The White Room launches G: So Tania what’s The White Room? T: We are a hairdressing salon – The White Room takes over the space previously known as Brady. My aim is for our team to provide our customers with unrivaled professional service. G: Why is the salon called The White Room? T: The salon takes its new name from its award winning minimalistic, stylish, white interior – it benefits from a spacious hairdressing area and a comfortable waiting area with great views of Herm. G: How many clients do you think you’ve styled over the years? T: Wow….thousands probably, but each client is totally different and the key to good hairdressing is understanding that, I spent 5 years working at Sassoon in London which helped me build the foundations of how I want to style hair. I’ve also been working locally now for over ten years. G: So it’s 2012, I’m looking for a new stylist and a new look, what can I expect from The White Room team? T: We are passionate about hair; we know our guests need to trust their stylists and we work hard to build relationships with them to ensure we deliver quality hairdressing. Each stylist stays with their guest throughout their visit to ensure that they receive the highest levels of attention. It’s quite simply about ensuring that every guest who walks through our doors enjoys the experience and leaves looking and feeling amazing. G: Who else features in The White Room team? SMELLS LIKE KEEN SPIRIT

Smells Like Keen Spirit A Lovers Buying Guide

words | Vanessa Mae

L

et’s come clean upfront; buying fragrance for a loved one is a headache at the best of times, let alone for Valentine’s Day. The dizzying fug of tester spritzes is enough to send even the most hapless of romantics flocking to the florist (or sock shop). And even once you’ve scaled the bottle mountain, there’s a choice you need to make, a lifestyle to buy into, an identity to assume. There’s not necessarily any correlation between the aroma and the name either; so even though you might find Pure Poison (Dior) the most seductive scent on the planet, she might take umbrage. The same applies for Brut. Get it right and it could be your lucky day, but get it wrong and it won’t be forgotten. There is a safe option; infiltrate bathroom cabinet, scrutinise contents paying strict attention to depleted bottles, copy and paste. The thing is, this doesn’t take much imagination and everyone knows it’s the thought that counts with romance. If Chanel No. 5 is her signature scent there’s not much out there to turn her head (or nose), so go for their sumptuous bath oil or body lotion instead. Likewise, if he hasn’t worn anything other than Cool Water (Davidoff) since 1998 then update his collection with their lighter, fresher Cool Water Ice Fresh or treat him to Green Irish Tweed (Creed); the more sophisticated forerunner. There are also tons of websites out there that are to fragrance what iTunes and Myspace are to music; they will crossmatch constituent ingredients and base-notes, offering forums and reviews. According to fragrantica.com, those who love Jimmy Choo for Women may also like Flowerbomb (Viktor & Rolf); worth a dalliance. The high risk/high return option requires you to select something new that at least one of you will enjoy. This takes a little pluck and a lot of luck, so to help you I have come up with three golden rules: 1. USE YOUR NOSE – Resist the natural urge to be seduced by the name, bottle design and associated marketing promises (see the D&G Light Blue TV advert). 2. QUALITY NOT QUANTITY – With perfume you generally pay for what you get so it’s worth splashing out. Avoid gift sets; you will come across as lazy and thrifty. 3. FINISHING TOUCHES – I’m sure there is scientific data out there somewhere to back up the direct correlation between the quality of the wrapping (paper, bows, ribbons, tissue paper, rose petals) and the amount of gratitude you will receive regardless of the gift inside.

Men

HOT PICKS FOR A COOL CRUSH Women Miss Dior Cherie (Dior) is fresh and flirty like juicy strawberry lip-balm for girls that kiss the boys. Men Beneath the bling packaging One Million (Paco Rabanne) is sweet and sensual; worn in moderation it has finesse for a first date. FOR YOUR BIT OF CRUMPET Women Molecule 01 (Escentric Molecules) is a seductive woody fragrance and totally unique in that it responds to the wearer’s body chemistry; so it smells differently on everybody. Men The new fragrance Kokorico (Jean Paul Gaultier) is rip-roaringly sexy, primal and just irresistible; should really come with a warning. FOR THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE Women Guerlain have updated their classic in Shalimar Parfum Initial creating a delicate, sweet caramel fragrance. Mysterious yet alluring; you will fall hopelessly in love. Men: Roadster (Cartier) smells sublime. It is fresh but earthy, minty but warm; prepare for attention and compliments. FOR YOUR SOUL MATE Women: Tuberose Gardenia (Estee Lauder) smells like an exquisute lilac and jasmine blossom bouquet; a luxurious and lasting fragrance. Men: Aventus (Creed) is a sophisticated and timeless classic. Not dissimilar to Bleu (Channel) it is nostalgic and hearty; a forever fragrance. A MILLION DOLLARS Women The striking Baiser Vole Extrait de Parfum (Cartier), which is based on lilies and green leaves, is presented in a gold flacon. Men £375 will buy your beau a special edition 250ml vat of Jardin d’Amalfi (Creed). Aside from being a sculptural centrepiece for any bathroom it will evoke zesty Mediterranean summers.

Karma Beauty K

arma beauty is a year old! There is a lovely story behind how Karma beauty began which is perhaps what makes it such an inviting salon. Ross Philippe was part of the Beau Sejour syndicate that won the Channel Island Christmas lottery and he put the money towards opening a salon in October 2010 for his girlfriend, Fallon Curtiss. The salon is based at The Mallard Complex and is a fantastic location, peaceful, relaxed with plenty of parking! Fallon has 8 years of experience and has quickly gained many clients, Karma Beauty first started with Fallon and one full-time therapist and as the business expanded they have been able to take on 7 more staff that consists of full and parttime positions.

right oils for you, you then pick the most appealing scent and it’s into the treatment room. The rooms are pure luxury, beautifully decorated and positioned on heated beds with therapeutic music it took all my strength not to nod off as soon as I took my position!

A year later they have accompanied the salon with the launch of their online store where professional beauty products can be purchased at the click of a button.

This hero treatment releases tension held in every part of the body leaving you feeling deeply relaxed and re-charged. Carefully applied pressures stimulate the nervous system, Swedish & neuromuscular techniques relieve muscular tension and lymphatic drainage helps encourage a healthy circulation and stresses and strains are dissolved away. The whole treatment is performed in sync with your partner and it is a truly relaxing experience.

Gallery Magazine gets pampered Two of us lucky ladies at Gallery Magazine were invited to Karma Beauty to trial the lovely couples massage and here’s our verdict! We indulged in the Ultimate Aromatherapy massage, which is enjoyed in the double treatment room (this can be with your partner or friend). The perfect Partners massage is 90min long and is £120 for 2 people (usually £150) As you enter the waiting room the therapist performs a thorough questionnaire with you to ascertain the BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

If you book this treatment in February you can receive a free little heart to share which includes a revive evening bath and shower oil that contains Geranium, Patchouli, Ylang Ylang and Sandlewood. This oil is recommended for people that need pampering, lifting tired spirits and boosting confidence.

Also for February and March only, you can buy any 2 Aromatherapy Associates retail products online and receive a free little heart! Would usually be £12! www.karmabeautyci.com

here is no other treatment as versatile as massage. Whether you want to beat the 4 o’ clock slump, ease tight muscles or induce a good night’s sleep, booking a massage session should answer your prayers. The right massage (and therapist) will send you on your way to better body alignment, lower stress levels and increased energy.

Massage isn’t something to be dismissed as a self-indulgent luxury. It is one of the oldest and simplest forms of medical care. We instinctively rub ourselves after a bump or fall and historically treatment of this kind can be traced back to ancient Ayurvedic practice in India and is even referenced in the Bible. Consequently there are so many variations and techniques used by therapists that it can be confusing to choose what is right for you. Fallon Curtiss, founder of Karma Beauty agrees: “Massage should be a regular treatment as it relieves stress, encourages relaxation, improves your posture and lowers blood pressure. As we age our joints tend to tighten restricting our range of motion. Massage helps keep joints more fluid, making you more flexible and less prone to injury.” With over 80 massage therapies around it’s best to seek the advice of a good therapist who will help guide you towards the best treatment. “Before you decide which massage style is best for you, you need to ask yourself a few questions. Do you simply want a massage for relaxation or stress control? Or do you need symptom relief or help with a certain health condition?” explains Hannah Adam, Head Therapist, Salvation Spa. Many modern day maladies can be eased through massage

therapy. Stress and muscle tension are typically best soothed by Swedish and Aromatherapy massage treatments. Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish physiotherapist is credited with developing a set of movements that have become widely used in western techniques and Swedish massage is an ideal first treatment for a massage novice. For added benefits, aromatherapy treatments incorporate essential oils and can improve both your psychological and physiological wellbeing. Depending on the oils chosen the masseuse can help you relax, lift your mood or improve your immune system. Other, more specialist massage treatments on offer include Acupressure which is a Chinese system where pressure points are stimulated using fingers or thumbs to improve the flow of energy or ‘chi’. Digestive problems, tiredness or headaches can all be improved by an experienced practitioner. Shiatsu works in a similar way, but is carried out on a floor mat and the patient remains fully clothed. The therapist may use her knees or elbows to stimulate pressure points and will incorporate stretching movements to help body alignment. If this sounds less relaxing, don’t be fooled, devotees of Shiatsu say they feel calm yet alert and focused after treatment. Massage’s benefits are not just limited to easing muscle tension or stress. Skin conditions such as congestion or acne or a poor immune system can benefit from manual lymphatic drainage which works to rid the body of toxins. The gentle and rhythmical movements help the body to eliminate toxins more efficiently.

You don’t have to be a trained therapist to get in on the act. Offering your partner or a friend a quick head massage will always be gratefully received!

TOUCH ME

Sports massage and deep tissue massage are often perceived to mean pain and discomfort, but treatment doesn’t have to be painful to be effective. “Massage doesn’t necessarily hurt; it just depends on the tension of the muscles and how much pressure is needed to release that tension. You want to be able to feel something is being done while still be reasonably relaxed,” explains Fallon. The deeper layers of muscles are targeted during treatment, releasing tension and helping the body to heal itself. Sports massage can be used before exercise to help warm up the muscles or can be used as part of an injury rehabilitation programme. Serious athletes will work regularly with a sports massage therapist as part of the training to aid post exercise recovery and improve performance. You don’t have to be a trained therapist to get in on the act. Offering your partner or a friend a quick head massage will always be gratefully received! Typically, Indian head massages last for around 15 minutes and can quickly soothe tension, relieve headaches and revive energy levels.

ANDY CLARKE You’ve been awarded “The Best Dining Pub” in the Channel Islands by the Good Food Guide, how does it feel for Le Fleur to be recognized in this way? I want to get some more accolades here and get the place back to what it used to be like as there is so much potential here, it is such a lovely setting. I have only been here for a short period of time but I want to make sure I make my own stamp on the place too. I want to build up a great reputation for Le Fleur with great feedback, and customer service. I want people to come here go wow and talk about the place once they leave. I hope that the reputation will develop over time and we will be renowned for our good food, customer service, and ambience. You’re well known for using local produce, who are your favourite suppliers? I can’t tell you! They have become friends and I have a lot of great suppliers on hand, I have a butcher that makes to my recipes which is fantastic. I think close relations with suppliers that know what I intend to make, and also using the produce that is around in Guernsey is essential to maintaining great flavour in my dishes. Guernsey is only a small island but we have to make use of what we have, I always use local produce as much as I can and on a small island like this you have to be good to survive and work hard to maintain a consistent standard. What’s your favourite local ingredient? Scallops, we’re right on the West Coast where you have scallops, bass and great fishing readily available. We have lots of boys that come in with Lobster and crab and I have a guy that is literally two fields down and he brings me his potatoes. We did the soup kitchen not that long ago and made the soup out of the garlic, rosemary and bay leaves that are here in the garden, mixed with the potatoes from the field down the road. It’s a nice touch and it’s lovely to see it all come together from local produce. I love cooking with fish and it’s great that it is so readily available on the island; I originally got into fish when I was living in Cornwall and used to work in Mulster’s Arms. It was close to the seaside and there was lots of great seafood available there also. What’s your favourite dish on your menu? Mmm… I’m always playing around with dishes so there isn’t one particular thing, but I do love fresh fish mixed with a bit of Oriental and it’s really crisp cut flavors, there’s a lot of Thai and French influences in my cooking also. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

APPETITE

I like using fresh ingredients and anything that will pop out, the crab dish on the menu at the moment is probably my favourite. It’s crab meat bound with crème fraiche, lime and chili, coriander and then sauté off chorizo in sambuca and put that next to it and when you fire off the chorizo the oil comes out, the sambuca flames it up and it goes all sticky, then you’ve got the sweetness with the chili and the sourness of the lime and the contrast is just beautiful – it’s a very popular dish. Who would be your perfect dinner date? Anyone in the world? I would have to say my girlfriend but if she wasn’t available it would have to be Jennifer Aniston! What would you recommend for Valentine’s Day dinner? Something light so you still have energy for later! Nothing too heavy, you want to enjoy the evening – and nothing with garlic! What’s your recipe for love? Time and patience and a lot of trust What’s the strangest food combination you’ve had requested? I have actually had a guy up here who had scampi tails with peppercorn sauce… couldn’t imagine that would taste that nice! Who’s your favourite celebrity chef? Simon Hopkinson, he’s a great chef and food critic! I read a lot of books focusing on all different continents and regions; I keep as up to date as possible with all food trends and like to try as many techniques as possible. I like to take different parts from what I read and influence from people I work with to put something together that suits the clientele that I work with here. Biggest kitchen disaster…. I have seen loads… the biggest was one that didn’t personally happen to me, it was a friend of mine. The head chef was cooking for the International Wine and Food Society and they did an Italian night and he ran into the walking fridge and cleared a whole stack of Zabaglione (Italian Mousse)… so that was the desert completely gone. It needs to be left to set, so you can imagine the mess of the kitchen! What would you have for your last supper? That’s a tough one; it’s got to be chicken noodle soup definitely homemade. Actually, saying that Roast chicken dinner, with all the trimmings and a Yorkshire pudding! What do you do on your days off? Days off!? I put a little bit more effort into more menus, read, take my girlfriend out, I like to go for walks as we are right on the coast and now and then I go bowling but that’s about it! I spend a lot of time in the kitchen and meeting all the reps to source the best local produce. When I get a chance I also enjoy a bit of me time, chilling out and enjoying the surroundings. What are your future plans for Le Fleur? I want to keep building on the reputation and moving forward, keeping up to date with the seasons and bringing new and exciting dishes to the table. I always like to try specials to see how well they work and introduce new dishes to the menu; I change the menu about once a month. I enjoy playing with the menus; we have function, canapé, and party menus. I have all these different menus and the receptionists love coming to me with their budget and requests and I can tailor this menu to suit. We have some great function rooms and outdoor spaces so I really like to try and make the most of the menus and keep people happy to keep them coming back!

ARCHITECTURE / DIY CATHEDRALS

I

ARCHITECTURE DIY CATHEDRALS

I me.

’ll be honest, I’ve struggled with this. Trying to combine the topics of architecture and love almost defeated

I Googled ‘Love + Architecture’, ‘Love OF Architecture’, ‘Love IN Architecture’, ‘Love AN Architect’, ‘Love IN AN Architect’ (?!): (Love in an Elevator? Elevators are architectural and there’s an Aerosmith link which is always good!) ‘Architecture IN Love’ searching mostly unsuccessfully. ‘I Love Architecture’ was more successful, revealing that Brad Pitt ‘loves Architecture’ so much that Angelina Jolie has bought him a plot of land replete with waterfall so Brad can take time out from the day job to emulate Frank Lloyd Wright’s seminal ‘Falling Water’ project. Pitt explains “acting is my career, architecture is my passion”. He’s not the only surprising Architectural apasionado. This also caught my eye: ‘Ice Cube Reveals Love For Architecture In New Documentary’. That’s Ice Cube of NWA 1980’s hip-hop notoriety revealing his love and, watching the documentary, knowledge of architecture: scaryideas. com/ content/26737. Before voicing his views on the US Police Force, Ice Cube trained as a draftsman; he hasn’t picked up a set square since but has remained passionate about the subject. Another lover of Architecture is Jack White of the White Stripes. The White Stripes have always had an obvious link

74

to architecture and design, in their album art, music videos and lyrics. Wikipedia is on strike so I can’t check but I believe White Stripe’s first album was ‘De Stijl’ after the Dutch arts movement which had a massive influence on modernism, and architects like Mies Van de Rohe in particular. In a 6 Music interview I listened to recently Jack White explained that if he’d had the funding he’d have trained as an architect. (Mr White: on the off chance you happen upon a copy of this groovy and splendidly free magazine – I’d be delighted to design a house for you, my email is below.) “I would love to have been an Architect” is a comment we’re privileged often to hear in the profession. Some have a passion for architecture as others do for football, cars, food, shopping, it inspires many and most people have at least been on holiday outings to admire architectural masterpieces. Before stumbling on the celebrity examples above I considered examining architectural symbols of love, architectural follies (or maybe even ’Les Folies D’Amor’ – certainly love connotations aplenty there, although architecturally dubious). I considered ‘monuments to love’ such as the ‘Taj Mahal’ (built as a mausoleum for a dead princess) and began analysing the word ‘love’ (dangerous as I’m dyslexic and prone to over analysis; anyway Plato, Freud and other clever people have already had a go so I doubt I’d be able to add much!).

Luckily, once I began thinking about the word ‘Love’ I came to ‘Love = Passion’ (as evidenced above). Passion led me to Religion. Religion and Architecture - now that’s easy! There are libraries of information; it’s basically the origin of architecture. Historically – Religion, always linked to The State, The State, only people with lots of money, Power, repress/impress the masses, please the gods etc. etc. Suddenly I remembered an inspiring story of one man’s religious (thus loving) architectural endeavour which fits the bill perfectly. His name is Don Justo Gallego Martinez and here’s his story in brief. No-one paid attention for the first 40 years to the site in a town on the outskirts of Madrid where, since the late 1940s, a mountain of construction rubble had grown. Then gradually from the junk, began to emerge something rather special. Like the Phoenix rising from the fire (although a lot slower) a cathedral appeared, gradually it attracted local people’s, and, eventually, the world’s attention. The ‘Cathedral for Our Lady of the Pillar’, as it’s named, is made entirely of recycled bits’n’bobs, leftovers from other building sites, materials which have been dumped or donated. Since day one it’s been designed and built by one man, the ultimate self-builder, now 87, and he’s on a serious mission. At current rate of progress the cathedral is still 15-20 years from completion, but this hasn’t deterred Don Justo.

GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

I

Don Justo, born 1925, began building in 1961, after years collecting supplies. A bullfighter as a young man, Don Justo felt God’s calling in his early 20’s and joined a Benedictine monastery. After 8 devout years he caught Tuberculosis. His zealous worship, involving excessive fasting had caused concern over his mental health, as such his illness caused him to be expelled. Rejection by the Catholic establishment combined with a full recovery galvanized him to begin building on land he’d inherited as a way of thanking The Lady of the Pillar to whom he had prayed for recovery.

design or construction and no regard for formal structural design or planning permissions. He began his project during General Franco’s dictatorship so it’s unsurprising that many of the materials used are no longer considered safe. The foundations, structure, reinforcing, roofs are questionable and defy logic. The town council tolerates the illicit structure, which lures a trickle of visitors to the nondescript suburb but some fear the chaotic construction will predecease its creator. The cathedral is un-consecrated and

be demolished. The value of the land and the danger of the construction conspire against this feat of devotion. Yet the cathedral is now known in Spain and internationally, and Don Justo has become a national treasure. Nobody wants to shatter the dream “the entire country would condemn them” says Father Rueda. Architecturally and artistically the Cathedral is admirable. I love its mishmash aesthetic. Detailed construction involves recycled buckets, pieces of wood, plastic tubes, columns made of barrels of concrete piled on top of each other. Worryingly (and completely erroneously) ‘strength is ensured by increasing amounts of cement in the concrete mix’.

The Cathedral’s architectural style is loosely Romanesque (Gothic was too complicated and Baroque was rejected as: “it does not please me”). The locals know Don Justo as ’El Loco della Iglesia’ - ‘the nutter of the church’ but he’s impressive. Currently the cathedral stands 40m tall. A staggering 8000sq/m, including the main cruciform cathedral building topped with a (as yet un-clad) domed roof, apparently based on St Peter’s Basilica, 2 towers, spires, cloisters, offices, lodgings, a library and beneath a large crypt, hand dug by Don Justo of course.

unrecognised by the Catholic Church, despite Don Justo bequeathing it to them, no planning approvals have been sought and no professional (engineer or architect) is willing to endorse it. “It’s difficult to get a licence now,” says Pablo Queralto, an Architect with Marjorada Council. “The bricks don’t meet minimum standards, either in themselves or the way they’ve been laid.” Yet he described the eccentric edifice as an icon unlikely to be torn down (BBC).

Gaudi, Wren, Palladio and many other famous Architects throughout history have claimed religious devotion to inspire their architecture. I think Don Justo, the DIY Supremo, takes the biscuit! When asked why he does it he responds only: “I do it for faith. That’s clear, no?”

With only occasional help from nephews and volunteers Don Justo has built it all. He has no training in

Local priest, Father Rueda, has promised to conduct Don Justo’s funeral there, but believes the cathedral could then

custodian trustee services Tony Leach said Mrs Le Normand’s financial experience had been an enormous help.

Mrs Le Normand is the latest winner of the award, which is decided by points given by employers who rate their temps on a weekly basis. Of all the temps currently working for Source, Mrs Le Normand received the highest number of points from her employer at Deutsche Bank.

This is a relatively new venture for Deutsche Bank and the team has been putting together the structure of the service and growing the business. Jackie has relevant fund administration experience and it has been really useful to be able to draw on that,’ he said.

‘I had a phone call to say that I had won, which was a really nice surprise before Christmas. There were some really nice prizes on offer but I’d been thinking about getting an iPad for a while so this seemed like perfect timing,’ she said. Mrs Le Normand began working for Deutsche Bank 15 months ago and was initially employed on a six week contract which has been extended ever since. ‘I’d been in New Zealand for three years and when I returned last year, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go back into finance and so temping was the perfect solution while I looked for a permanent job and 15 months later, I’m still here and enjoying it and there is a real chance the appointment could become a permanent one!,’ she said. ou may have already realised that the theme of this issue of Gallery is ‘love’.

To paraphrase CS Lewis “To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one”. This is certainly good advice when it comes to managing assets. Emotions, whilst everything in love, should be put to one side when it comes to investing as they can be an enemy of longterm portfolio success. It is with this in mind that love is an alien concept to include in a piece on investment, so we will come as close to the emotion as possible in this column and discuss sentiment and intimate knowledge.

Investec and Amherst Get Crafty Children from Amherst Primary School have been demonstrating their artistic skills with help from Investec. Last December, Investec Specialist Private Bank and Investec Asset Management announced a new charitable partnership with the school after their five year association with the Dyslexia Day Centre came to a natural end. Over the last year, Investec staff have given up their time to help with after school clubs, listened to children read, joined a camp in Lihou and spent a weekend redecorating outdoor furniture and play equipment. Now as the school gets ready for Christmas, staff will be going into school during its craft week. ‘We have two craft weeks – one for the younger children and one for the older. During the week, the pupils make a range of things including cards and calendars which are then displayed in classrooms for parents and guests to see,’ said Amherst Primary School head teacher Tracey Moore. ‘We’re delighted to have the extra help from the Investec staff and they will certainly be busy. They will be working with our younger children who need the extra supervision and help with cuttings, sticking and colouring in and as it’s so close to Christmas then I have no doubt that there will be a vast amount of glitter involved.’

In the short-term, sentiment is one of the most significant factors driving stock markets and can have a profound impact. The fear of being broke and out on the street, or losing your retirement fund evokes an emotional response. Since 2008, we have seen markets moving with amplified volatility as investors did the risk on-risk off Hokey Cokey, driven largely by sentiment. It didn’t matter whether the rhythm behind the dance was based upon real occurrence or rumour. Fear and greed have been drivers throughout investment history, whether it was the tulip frenzy that swept Holland in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries where bulbs reached astronomical prices, the South Sea bubble or more recently the Dotcom era that had speculators paying premiums for shares in companies that had no profits and more often than not, no sales. Equally, you or your investment manager should have ‘intimate knowledge’ of the investments in the portfolio. As stewards of clients’ assets, a manager’s intimate knowledge of each holding in a portfolio should be a requirement; reliance upon the continuation of previous performance is not enough. If a detailed examination is conducted, would the manager be able to explain the reasoning behind holdings and how the portfolio is positioned to understand the overall risk aspects based upon the portfolio’s construction? Recent investment failures include countries such as Greece, Portugal, Ireland; companies such as La Senza and Blacks and the investment houses of Merrill Lynch, Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers. So, avoid the crushes that create initial attraction but then wear off. The kind of portfolio manager you should marry is one that offers consistent long-term performance, never getting too high or low and avoiding the emotional roller coaster that comes with wild swings.

Michelle Le Clerc from Investec said, ‘We had a fantastic first year with Amherst and are looking forward to seeing how we can help and support them during 2012.’ Mrs Moore said the support from Investec over the last year had been invaluable. ‘We couldn’t believe it when we were told that Investec wanted to link up with us and we have seen enormous benefits over the last year. All of the staff are genuinely interested in the children and their progress and we can’t thank them enough for the difference they are making,’ she said

ABOUT THE BUSINESS:

Ben Le Prevost, Chocolatier was started around 4 years ago. Ben has a regular stand at the Farmers Market and regularly supplies a number of local restaurants. He also sells though his website and many people would have received gifts at Christmas or on special occasions crafted by Ben. He also produces Liberation Chocolate bars and through word of mouth has regular customers who crave his products. Valentines Day is a special time for a Chocolatier as his creations are regularly given to loved ones as tokens of love. A quick look at his website at www. benleprevostchocolatier.com will highlight the diverse range of his creations with colour and flavour being the essence of his art. Flavours such as Pea, Raspberry and Stinging Nettle, Basil, Marmite and Honey Roasted Parsnip are testimony to the adventurous nature of this master of his craft. The beauty and artistry of the finished products make them look too good to eat; but that never happens. Ben’s products include no artificial flavourings or preservatives as he firmly believes in using only natural ingredients. Ben Le Prevost Chocolatier is based at the Bella Luce Hotel.

So, tell us what inspired you to start your business? I was unhappy in my work and decided to resign from my job at Christmas time and take a holiday to decide what to do next. I met some people who told me how their son had dreamed of becoming an animator for big films, he took a job as a runner on a film set and ended up as an animator on the Harry Potter films. Dreams can come true. Their advice was that if I really wanted be a Chocolatier I should go for it; and here I am. What did you do prior to starting the business? I was a pastry Chef at the Fermain Valley Hotel. Did that teach you any lessons that helped you succeed? I was there for fifteen years and did a lot of training. In particular I did courses in Germany and Florida on things like chocolate making and chocolate sculpting. It was this experience that led me towards being a Chocolatier. What’s the toughest lesson you’ve learnt since starting out in business? I have always been lucky in that I have always had friends and family I could talk to if I ever had any decisions to make which I was unsure about. What I have found difficult is getting shops to stock my chocolates because of their short shelf life.

The issue centres around taste. The longer the shelf life of chocolate the more you lose in taste. Decisions on what to sacrifice are very difficult to make. Do you have any funny stories? I once made a smoked chocolate cake (strange but true). I smoked it with dried orange peel and cinnamon. When the sponge cake was cooked I took it out of the smoker and left it to rest. Sometime later I tried it hoping to have a sponge with a smokey taste but it wasn’t that strong so I put it in the refrigerator and went home. The next day when I opened the refrigerator all I could smell was the smoke from the sponge and it now tasted smokey but so did the lemon tart, the fresh strawberries everything! Oops! What are your plans for the future? I plan to carry on making chocolate and extend the product range. What advice would you give to would-be entrepreneurs? If you get the chance to enter a competition, have a go. I entered the Schroders Bright Ideas Competition which proved really beneficial. Also look for help wherever you can. The Potting Shed has been a great help for me as has another friend who prefers to be nameless. Most of all, if you want to start a business just go for it. You’ll always regret it if you never try. It all started with their Dad originally being a member of staff who worked there for years for the previous owners. “About 13 years ago the previous owners were retiring and the opportunity for our Dad to buy the business arose and he took it.” Steve started about 9 to 10 years ago and Andy has been involved for the past four years in a full time capacity. Andy’s little boy is the perfect heir to what would be a third generation business if he followed his dad’s and grandfather’s footsteps. A recently engaged Steve is yet to add to the list of heirs but would equally love to hand the business down to his kids if they are interested in it. As Andy pointed out, it’s a great business and provides security, not to mention the appeal of not having to work for someone else!

Capelles is one of the most recognised and well respected names in the building trade and with future plans aplenty and offspring ready to take the helm, Gallery is pleased to report that the Capelles dynasty will be around for a long time yet.

What’s the toughest lesson you’ve learnt since starting out in business?

Pop into their showroom to meet the friendly team and view their fantastic range of products, or visit their website for further details and ideas for your rennovations. http://www.capelles.co.uk/

Steve – Good staff are essential and we are lucky to have such a great team working for us.

So, tell us what you did prior to working at Capelles? Andy – I was an accountant, although I did go travelling and then live in England before coming back and settling in Guernsey. Steve – After leaving HSBC, I went travelling and then started at Capelles after that. Are there any particular lessons in life that have helped you succeed? Andy – To always treat people as you expect to be treated. Steve – To be considerate to peoples’ needs.

Andy – Sometimes you get burned in business unfortunately, it’s normally due to trusting the wrong people.

Do you have any funny stories? Well it wasn’t us, but years ago when our Dad first worked at Capelles they accidentally fitted a fireplace in the wrong house........they had put it in next door!! They let him keep the fireplace free of charge. What are your plans for the future? To extend our product ranges, and continue with great customer service. What advice would you give to would-be entrepreneurs? Work hard! You have to be prepared to put the hours in. You get out what you put in and there is no secret except hard work and elbow grease.

CHESS: FRED HAMPERL

Chess: Fred Hamperl words | Shambles Rambles

Chess is one of the world’s most popular board games and is played by millions of people across the globe. The object of the game is to checkmate your opponent’s King by placing it under threat of capture to which it cannot escape. Players may also resign their position in the game if they are under attack without the pieces left to defend the King. The game requires an awful lot of concentration and the ability to think what your opponent might do to counteract any move that you might make. The first modern Chess Tournament was held in London in 1851 with the game originating somewhere around the 10th century. I think it might be here to stay!

I

t’s my pleasure to introduce Fred Hamperl, the first Guernsey player to win the Channel Islands title outright for thirty years, a feat he has achieved twice.

Fred achieved the international chess title of FIDE Master, the third highest title after Grandmaster and International Master at the Torino, 37th world chess Olympiad in 2006. He plays in International Open tournaments all over Europe every year, and his best performance so far is a near 2300 Elo rating which is the international Chess rating system, with his current rating being over 2100. Just by talking to him you can tell that Fred is a keen sportsman and lists Cricket, Football, Hockey and Tennis as the main sports he has played over the years. One thing that is certain, his passion for Chess is second to none and the more we talked the more I became fascinated with exactly what the game is all about, especially that eight or so of the top local players work regularly with coaches from off-Island. Last month’s incredible 18th hole tie with Island Golfer, Mick Marley has really set me up for this challenge, after all I was the Goldings Middle School Class 3G Chess Champion. Fred set the board up and offered me the white set. I moved the Pawn to K4 and pushed the clock – now it’s Fred’s go! I played a few basic tactical errors of which Fred later explained to me and managed to keep the game going for an hour, but I was never really at races. Checkmate came with my King trying its best to leg it whilst being pursued by two Queens. Oh well, I am sure I picked up some Elo ratings! I asked Fred some pretty thought provoking questions over a pint of Guernsey Bitter. When your pet bird sees you reading the newspaper, does he wonder why you’re just sitting there, staring at the carpet? These are the kind of questions I used to get in job interviews, where they supposedly want to see if you can think outside the box. I always found them horribly patronising but had to button my lip because I needed the job. That feeling hasn’t gone away but for humour’s sake let’s say: maybe I have the Times puzzle of the immortal chess game woven into my bedroom carpet, you should see my bedroom carpet. I was having dinner with Garry Kasparov at my house the other day – the problem was, we had a chequered tablecloth and it took him two hours to pass me the salt. Do you have a chequered tablecloth or are they banned in your household? Well I’ve got a chequered history that’s probably enough. I was in the Peninsula Hotel the other day when you had your tournament on, and a group of Chess players had checked in and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament

88

victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. “Why”, they said as they moved off. “Because”, he said, “I can’t stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer”. Would you have allowed them to stay there? Yes, it takes one to know one. When you go shopping and push the trolley up to the checkout, I bet you know the exact amount the items come to having worked it out in your brain on the way round. How far ahead do Chess players calculate their moves? It depends on the stage of the game. In the opening we often prepare lines 20 moves deep. Although that is calculation the work wasn’t done over the board under the time constraints of the game. I think what you are referring to is the work done at the board in the middlegame and that depends on the complexity of the position, but if you can make quite forcing moves (like checks for instance) then often your opponent’s replies are quite limited and one might go 10 moves or so down a line involving a King hunt, until you can inflict checkmate at the end. The endgame is a whole other ballgame. When there are just Kings and Pawns on the board you may have to calculate 20 move lines with Pawns Queening for both sides. This can be very draining, especially nearing the end of a 6 hour game. Everyone gets taught how to play chess by their Grandad, usually in a caravan whilst it’s raining on a family trip to Minehead. How did you first get into the game? My Dad taught me, he used to play in the London leagues. I played with my older sisters; the youngest tipped the board over and then the oldest one refused to play me and then I beat my Dad. The computer programme, Deep Blue, was the first machine player to overcome a reigning World Chess Champion when it defeated Garry Kasparov in 1997. Come on, answer that age-old question, are computers better than humans at Chess? Well firstly we need to address your premise that you take as fact now, but Kasparov is still disputing this match. The Deep Blue machine allegedly had ongoing programming happening to it while the match was in progress and top Grandmasters were allowed into the programming room while the match was being played. I think Kasparov’s argument may have some foundation, however that is all fairly academic now because several of the top computer programs can beat the world elite players even running on a laptop now. So of course the answer to your question is now “Yes”, but remember chess is a puzzle to the question with White to play first with perfect play should White win or draw? One day I guess a computer will solve that question, and will that kill the game? I don’t think so because humans will still find the game just as demanding as they ever have done. I noticed on the Internet that recent research indicates that

factors other than practice are important in finding champion... Chess players. It suggested that stronger players start playing chess earlier, that they are more likely to be left-handed, and that obviously the game is very strategic, can you describe the typical strategies used during the game without boring us too much! The game of Chess involves many tactics and strategies. Strategies are usually quite general long term goals and you may have several on the go at one time. Your choice of opening may involve creating a Kingside attack on your opponent or to gain more space and make your opponent’s defence very cramped and awkward so he can’t co-ordinate his pieces with any good affect. However it is often tactics that decide a game; a vicious sacrifice when your opponent was not prepared can be devastating for him, often they create a lot of added time pressure for him as he has to spend more time navigating the minefields of tricks. There are lots of tactical motifs in Chess, and they are really good fun to learn. These short-term tactical patterns are key tools to Chess players. The Pawn is possibly the most boring item ever to be introduced into a board game. At least the Horse can jump things and the Rook can zoom happily from end to end. I am in fact thinking of applying to the World Chess Federation to have it banned. How important are the pawns during the game in the overall strategy of the match? Well firstly remember the pawn can become any piece it wants to if it gets to the other side of the board in the enemy camp. In terms of strategy, your Pawns are like the defensive wall of your Castle in the game. The Pawns tell your pieces what to do, depending on the colours of the squares they occupy and which piece might compliment that or how advanced they are. If your Pawns get very advanced and are supported they can squash your opponent. In local Cricket most of our teams play against the same player week in, week out. This of course breeds familiarity where they do not have to think about ways of getting someone out, they already have a game plan for certain players. When they compete against players off-island it becomes much more difficult. After playing locally against the same opposition every week, do you find it hampers the way you play in terms of how you approach games against foreign opposition? Yes this is difficult because there is a great camaraderie between the players and we play as a Guernsey team as well. We tend to know our strengths and weaknesses and our familiarity in certain positions so it is hard to achieve the element of surprise. I play more international games than I do domestic ones so it doesn’t hamper me so much but I think for some of the other players it might because they never get to use any of the opening ideas locally as most club players adopt quite quirky systems, often just as a one-off for that particular game. Playing the same people in the Guernsey leagues can become a bit monotonous. I think the record might be the late John Bisson against Tim Knight, they played over 150 league games over a 50 year period. John had never won one until the very last game before John passed away. I reckon John’s still smiling about that. I read an article on the internet about a couple of people who have been playing correspondence chess over the internet for seven years, apparently they email it back and forth. If a Tennis game goes to the wire and you have to battle over 5 sets but then

90

lose in a tie-break then it must be soul destroying. Imagine losing a game after seven years of playing! What’s the longest chess game you have played in? I play with a fairly aggressive style so my games only tend to average about 50 moves. My longest game in terms of moves was a very recent one against Peter Rowe. It was 124 moves; we got to a Rook and Bishop versus rook ending which with perfect play should be drawn, but after 6 hours it is hard to defend perfectly and I managed to win that. It was 1am in the morning when we had to pack up all the club equipment and leave in the dark. My longest games in terms of time tend to be in big tournaments where they have a longer time control. Our Guernsey festival has a long time control and you often see 2 or 3 Guernsey players sat at a board as the last in the large playing hall at the end of each day fighting doggedly on their home soil. Overseas players are often caught unawares of the donkey’s persistence and stamina. And the question from Mick Marley, last month’s Golfer is: Do Chess players need a Poker Face (to hide emotion)? And if so, why don’t Poker players need a Chess Face? Well Mick would need to ask a Poker player the answer to his second question! However the first question is definitely yes and no. Emotion, expressions and body language play a part in the game. Obviously seeing your opponent is suffering helps you know you’re doing well, but for strong players you have to be very careful how you read these signs. A player may actually be struggling 10 moves down a line of calculation where he is trying to find the final move to mate you when he can already see how to win a piece, and is definitely actually doing really well and it would be a mistake to read that the agony on his face is that he thinks he’s doing badly. Also there is a lot of bluff that goes in, maybe just after setting a trap. One key example is hiding opening preparation. With modern computer databases of historically played games it is possible to prepare long opening ideas against a particular opponent’s style, especially with an experienced international player as your coach/captain to help you. In the game you’re faced with the dilemma do you bash-out those moves and save a lot of time on your clock or do you play them slowly and make a few facial expressions and sighs to try and fool your opponent into thinking you haven’t had that exact position on a Chess board in front of you maybe as recently as only 10 minutes before the game. Well I do a bit of both. The problem with Chess is, if you don’t finish your opponent off from this advantage in the opening they will always have a chance to equalise or even get you later in the game. At amateur level there are often 2 or 3 swings in which player has the advantage in the game. I definitely use a Poker face when I play and I show as little emotion as possible. Next month’s question for a Darts player please? How easy is it for you to get 3 in a bed? The Guernsey Chess Federation are about to start a brand new initiative that will bring the game into local schools. If you’re interested in taking up Chess as a teacher within school, an interested parent or you want to play in the local leagues then get in touch with Fred on 07911 139088 or visit the Guernsey Chess Federation website: www.guernseychessclub.org.gg

Guernsey Kart and Motor club was formed in 1960, with an official motocross track being built in the 1980’s. Motocross is a popular sport in Guernsey and appeals to a wide audience with young, old, male and female riding and supporting motocross. When and why did you start motocross? I first started riding a bike when I was 4. I started on sand racing, then Frankie Brouard, another racer encouraged me to go up to motocross. I’d say he was my local inspiration because he got me into the sport. Do you do any other types of racing? I compete in sand racing and trials too. In sand racing I use the same bike but we have to change parts on it. For trials I use a lowslung bike, which has no seat so I have to stand up all the time, this is for jumps and agility. What has been your worst crash, and would injuries ever make you think about stopping MX? I’ve lost count of all the crashes I’ve had! The worst was probably about two years ago, when I went over a jump and got knocked off by another bike. They stopped the racing for the rest of the day, and I had to go to A&E. I had two fractured ribs and bruised kidneys! The injuries don’t bother me though. How popular do you think motocross is in Guernsey and how would you like to get other people involved? Very popular, but it could do with more publicity. I would like to get more people involved; we definitely need some beginners and younger riders. What tips would you give to beginners? Remember to stand-up when you go over a jump. Where you can, stand up on the straights, sit down on the corners. What do you think of the change of tracks? It’s all right, but I don’t really like it as much. It doesn’t flow, and I can’t get as much speed anymore. All of the jumps were made for and tested by adults, so I don’t think the younger riders enjoy it as much any more.

Who are your motocross idols and inspirations? I don’t really watch motocross on TV, I find it boring, and I prefer to ride! How far do you want to go with your motocross career? I’d like to carry the sport on, as I get older. The only thing that might stop me is Carpal Tunnel in my wrists, if that got really bad I’d have to think about stopping.

QUICKFIRE ROUND

I’d like to see a track for younger competitors and some practice space to learn before they race. In Jersey they have another track that you can use at any time, we don’t have that here.

What would your ideal racetrack be? I wouldn’t have concrete starts; I would have long straights, big jumps and lots of dips! Have you ever raced abroad, and how did that go? I have been over to Jersey, but that’s it so far. I’d like to do a practice day in France and then do a race once I know what the track is like. Is it an expensive sport? Yes, I join two different clubs and then you’ve got fuel and engine fees. I pay for half of my bike, and my dad pays the other half – I am very lucky my dad spends a lot of time doing up my bikes! If you had the chance where would you most like to race in the world? Mmm… somewhere in the USA would be great! If you could have a song playing whilst you’re racing, what would it be? I don’t know, but I definitely wouldn’t have my dad giving me instructions over the radio! How did you do last season, and how are you doing this season? Last year I got 3rd but I was riding a 65cc bike. I had my first win this year on my 85cc bike. I’ve won the sand racing 4 times in my class. This season started quite slowly because I was on my new bike, but towards the end of the season I was beating 150CC 4 stroke bikes with big wheels, which have a lot of power and speed. I’ve also won the boot trophy from 1964; it was originally someone’s racing boot, it is awarded for the most outstanding and up-and-coming rider of the season. The club presidents and last year’s winner make the decision. Do you think you’ll get into any other racing events? I’d love to do the hill climb but I’m not old enough yet, that’s something to look forward to in the future!

Born and bred > Guernsey When I’m older I want to be > I’m not sure yet… Favourite meal > Pizza with loads of cheese on! Favourite TV show > Mythbusters, because of all the experiments they do, and it’s funny. If you could meet a celebrity who would you choose and why > Travis Pastrana, he did the first double backflip at the X-games. What Bike do you ride > A Suzuki small wheel 85cc. What’s your racing number > 8, my dad got it for me, because it’s our house number and the Chinese lucky number. Who Sponsors you > Ted Hughes at Rock Solid. Do you have any nicknames > JJ.

THE ISLAND GAMES: BERMUDA 2013

G

allery popped down to catch up with Guernsey Island Games Association Chairman (Hell of a title!), David Inglis to get up to speed on what the plan for Bermuda 2013 is. Just in case you’ve been asleep for the last 26 years, (which is how long the Games has been running), then you may not know that Guernsey is fast becoming one of the most successful islands at the games. With a medal in every one of the 13 sports entered and over 100 medals brought home last year we are an island to be reckoned with when it comes to sport!

Tell us a bit about what the plan is for Bermuda? Well there are 14 events and we have teams available for 13 of those, everything except Gymnastics. However with costs etc it is sometimes not possible to represent in all areas. Bermuda is the most expensive of games that we have entered, in terms of travel and accommodation. We have budgeted for £2000 per athlete, however Isle of White for the last games was nowhere near that, so it levels out. With Jersey in 2015 we take the view that it’s one expensive games sandwiched by two more affordable games. We recognise that it is hard times, but if broken down and fund raising starts now then a more manageable view is £25 a week saved will cover it.

Is there any sponsorship in place to cover the costs? Every athlete as far as I know will be paying for themselves, Generali are on board as the main sponsor and their financial input is vast and very generous however it does not cover everything. It is the Natwest Island Games as they always sponsor the host island however each island has its own headline sponsor which for us is Generali. Each individual sport then has the scope to encourage their own sponsor to help out, or in fact to contact me directly and we will help to match them with a team. A main job for us is to ease the financial burden and with a very professional committee team in charge of 94

the individual sports, we hope to get separate sponsorship in place for each team/athlete.

What is the criteria for a candidate? The only rule really is that they have to be born in Guernsey and they have to have lived here for a year before the games start. The issues arising are not necessarily getting the candidates for the sports but to accommodate them when we arrive. Barrack style sleeping is not ideal as 10% of our team are under 18, and our alternative is home sharing, however the ethos of team travel is that we want the team to be together so again not ideal. Team spirit is a huge part of the games and there are a few things we are strict on to maintain that spirit. It is important that we have a uniformed front for the opening ceremony and medal presentation, which is where the main sponsors money helps. We have a set tracksuit for the whole squad, they have their separate kits for competing. This is where individual sponsorship can help to ease the burden of getting equipped for the competition. We try to bring on board a number of sponsors that can help in whatever capacity they feel they can. We are not necessarily looking for huge amounts although that would be nice! We would like to hear from anyone that would like to help and that doesn’t necessarily mean a financial commitment. Athletes can be away for nine days, and some are taking this as holiday or not earning for this period, so employers could perhaps show some support in this area, I know lots do but it would be great if we knew all athletes had this backing if possible.

What size squad will be going to Bermuda? It isn’t just the teams as we have to take into consideration, medical and coaching staff as well as committee and supporters. It is a 200 strong team all in and that is without the supporters! We are hoping to boat to Bournemouth and fly direct, but the logistics are difficult. We aren’t sure of Jerseys plans yet, but we will put aside the rivalry if it means cheaper travel... but only once we have more golds than them!

What is the importance of the Games for Guernsey Sports?

your island before you go on to bigger events. Also we had some fantastic 4ths at the last games that we know can improve to a medal so, although we had a fantastic Games, there is scope to improve. I have a tenure of 2 games as Chairman, and have seen my first one through so this will be my last as Chairman so it would be great to improve on the medal table from last year, saying that its not all about the medals. The camaraderie of the team and representing your island is whats important. The friendships that can be formed at these events can last a lifetime and also help with future aspirations like Commenwealth or even Olympic Games.

Do you work closely with the Sports Commission to help local talent? We have recently started to develop that relationship and we are noticing the standard rising because of it which is great for Guernsey. People had mentioned at the last games their surprise at the success of Guernsey, and I can honestly say that it is because of the partnerships that are now in place to help nurture rising talent. The Games was originally started to give locals a chance to compete at a higher level but now with air travel and communications in place a lot of teams are experiencing off island competitions, and this with the aid of us and the sports commission means Guernsey is producing some fantastic talent and more importantly it is being guided correctly. In a final chat with David about the games he made a very valid point, “Not everyone can take part in the Island Games, it is a unique club, and we as Guernsey people are lucky enough to be invited”. If you are reading this and feel as patriotic as I do right now... speak to David about how we can ensure a full team goes to Bermuda and represents the island we are lucky enough to live on. It would be a horrible shame to think we are not entering certain areas just because of cash-flow, when we have two years to sort it out! Get behind the Guerns Gallery Glitterati and dig deep! (We’ll even throw in some free pom poms!)

Its a real must have on the C.V for a local sports person trying to better themselves and what better than to have a medal representing GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

Finally released outside the UK after a month-long period of exclusivity, Motorola claim that the RAZR XT910 is ‘impossibly thin’, which is quite a statement I’m sure you’ll agree. Featuring sculpted Gorilla glass, a kevlar back and diamond-cut aluminium accents it’s definitely a bit of a looker, and is splash proof too so you don’t have to be precious

The MotoCast app enables you to stream media from your home PC securely and effortlessly, meaning you don’t have to fill your phone to bursting point with all of your playlists and videos. Zero motion blur video playback and 1080p high definition recording from its 8MP camera should help you to remember those moments that your brain doesn’t quite manage in crisp, replayable quality.

BlackBerry Bold 9790 Available on all business plans, with fantastic deals at Airtel-Vodafone. For all of you die-hard BlackBerry fans, here is a new and improved handset to give you even more reason to be backing the berry. The new model is thinner, sleeker and also includes a touch screen for ease of use. With enough power to blast through tasks all day long, and still have battery to spare come bedtime, its new levels of stamina will really stand out against others in its family.

What will 4G LTE mean to you? The next generation of mobile broadband – called 4G or LTE (long-term evolution) – is only a nano heartbeat away. Trials in the UK are well advanced and handset manufacturers are jockeying for position. In Jersey, networks are mostly 4G-ready. So what will internet on-the-move bring us? Currently commanding speeds of 87Mbps* on the streets of London, O2’s trial brings 4G to laptops, smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices, IP telephony, online gaming and streamed multimedia. Airtel-Vodafone’s network in the Channel Islands is run by Nokia. It’s ready for its 4G-upgrade - probably at the end of this year or early next year - whenever the regulator makes the all-important licences available. But timing is also dependent on devices coming to market too. Currently, only a handful of handsets in the UK support 4G. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus was released at the end of 2011, though some were put off filling their Christmas stockings since it was only available in the 16GB model to start with. core processor, new Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS, 1GB of RAM and so on, Samsung is set to launch in white (16GB) and in 32GB (silver) any day now. Snapping at Galaxy Nexus’s heels is the LG Spectrum, which has already wowed the masses with its even more impressive specs. At the time of going to press, network operators Verizon had set a launch date of 19th January. Incorporating a 4.5-inch True HD IPS display, the screen benefits from what is known as “Real Strip” sub-pixel arrangement. This means it gives a far sharper display than the traditional “Pen Tile” of other smartphones. Running Android’s 2.3 OS, the new Spectrum packs a massive 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor, 1.3 megapixel front camera and 8MP rear camera. The other smartphone for UK 4G-ers brings two famous brand names together. The Motorola Droid RAZR hasn’t been out very long and like most new smartphones comes with a few teething problems. The rumour mill over at Droid-life talks about an update, although this will be a bug-fix only... Android 4.0 and the Ice Cream Sandwich may still be four to six months away, they say.

Mobile phones and extreme sports rarely tend to mix but the Samsung Galaxy Xcover breaks this unwritten rule by laughing in the face of danger. The Xcover’s shock, water and dust resistant status defies convention and understates the reality. Not only does it take a lot more than a few knocks and still keeps working but you can actually submerge the phone in water and it comes out unscathed. Cover it in mud or use it in a dusty wilderness, this phone can withstand virtually anything that the environment can throw at it. Xcover’s rugged nature doesn’t stop it being a smartphone. It runs Android Gingerbread and comes with all the features you need to stay in touch in this connected world: Twitter and Facebook are built in as is 3G mobile broadband and Bluetooth connectivity, a 3.15 megapixel photo and video camera, MP3 player, FM radio and 150Mb of built-in memory with capacity for a 32Gb MicroSD card. If your idea of fun is to throw yourself around, whether it’s on the ski slopes, in the water or from a plane, then the Xcover is without doubt, the ‘indestructi-phone’ you need and the best thing is it comes free with a £25 per month Smart200 subscription from Sure.

The ‘instant on’ feature of its sleep mode will also see it waking up in just 2 seconds. Unlike a conventional PC, you can choose from a range of input methods to suit your requirements, from a wireless keyboard to a digitizer pen or touchscreen so the 700T can adapt to your surroundings making it perfect for people on the move. There are Windows 7 touch apps pre-installed and regularly updated and an impressive battery life that can provide up to 6.1 hours of computing on just one charge. T&T BOOM

A personal head to head review of music each month with Tom & Tyler

This month we have had a good listen to Asylum Seekas new album - Recorded Delivery. A Guernsey based hip hop collective that have been on the scene for over a decade.

Tom Girard, BBC Introducing Guernsey and Guernsey Arts Commission Music Sub-Committee

S

o I’m going to start this out by admitting that my knowledge of hip hop is not as extensive as it could be and certainly not as extensive as my knowledge of rock ‘n’ roll. That said I hope I can at least demonstrate an appreciation for the evident talents of Guernsey’s only major live hip hop group, Asylum Seekas. With a history going back almost 10 years in one way or another chances are if you’ve seen some live hip hop in Guernsey it was them as they have played pretty much everywhere over the years. From the Vale Earth Fair and Guernsey Festival to Fermain Tavern and Funk Da Rock, when it was down at the Half Moon. Their new album, Recorded Delivery, shows why they have made such an impression and become such a fixture of live music in Guernsey.

The first thing that struck me about the record, as my brain tried to find its way into the complex rhymes and beats, was how sonically satisfying the album is. Unlike some local recordings everything about this album is tight and complete from the beats and samples to the scratching and rhymes all laid together with absolute precision and clarity to make the desired point. And making a point seems to be a lot of what Asylum Seekas are about as they run the gamut of social issues across the album as seen from street level including subjects as diverse as the effect of social networking sites on society, drugs and sexism alongside a few more personal points of view.

The first thing that struck me about the record, as my brain tried to find its way into the complex rhymes and beats, was how sonically satisfying the album is.

MUSIC

Alongside the serious points comes as many (if not more) elements where the group have their collective tongue firmly in their cheek. Often this is worked in amongst the tracks but comes into its own on the ‘skits’ and aside moments within the tracks themselves. This is an element of their work which has also come into its own on the Yesterday’s News videos recently posted to YouTube which come across like Have I Got News For You run through a Guernsey based hip hop filter.

Another highlight of the album comes from the range of musical styles adopted by the group, being rather naive in the world of hip-hop I was pleasantly surprised to find that the music spans a vast range of sounds from elements of funk to dancehall and reggae styles and live acoustic elements all mixed up with perfectly selected samples and well chosen guest appearances. The guest appearances are also a welcome element as they all serve to add something extra to the mix and develop the group’s sound excellently whether it’s additional voices in the mix with the rhymes or the use of melodic female vocalists to counterpoint the sometimes harsh sound of the Seekas themselves. While I don’t have many criticisms of the record as a big fan of Ozzy Osbourne’s Crazy Train, Asylum Seekas version doesn’t work for me, but I understand that really no track is sacred (despite my protestations about some) and at least here something interesting is being done with it and not just an X-Factor cover that misses the point. In the end, while I came away from Recorded Delivery still not having gained that appreciation of hip hop that seems instinctive to me in terms of rock ‘n’ roll, and not necessarily agreeing with everything these guys have to say, this remains a great album and its mix of musical sounds and styles really does make for a very deep musical experience that shows why four guys from Guernsey and one from London really are capable of making a mark on the world of music. Tyler Edmonds, Singer, songwriter and guitarist Last of the Light Brigade

N

ot too sure where to start with this one, Getting my head around one or two hip hop tunes is difficult enough, let alone 17. But here we go.

90% of the time local artists seem to struggle most with the production side of things, but with ‘Recorded delivery’ that definitely isn’t the case. From beginning to end this album sounds as professional as they come. In fact I wouldn’t have flinched hearing it on Radio 1, which is a very rare occurrence for any local act and after checking out other local hip hop artists, it seems especially rare for that genre. So now for the songs. I’m particularly in favour of the more comical aspects of the album so ‘Networking’ and ‘Blame’ Really work for me. Both songs (like most on the album) really tap into a controversial and dark humour, which is right up my street. If placed in the hands of one with a more tetchy disposition than myself this album could even be classed as offensive but don’t think for a minute that wasn’t intended. It’s conveyed with a good measure of wit and intelligence and producing anything that makes people laugh, well that’s possibly the hardest thing to achieve.

Highlighting only the facetious side of the album however would be an injustice. As Tom rightly said they also tackle more serious issues, and do so well. The group definitely have something to say, you would presume everybody releasing music does but unfortunately nowadays that is not the case. In songs such as ‘skit’ (Blatant spoof of the Match.com advert) they were very smart to incorporate such a well known tune and twist it to their desire. It was instantly recognizable to me and this helps include first time hip hop listeners like myself. The problem with this, and many others on the album is how current they are, so much so that I feel them almost instantly dating. If it’s one thing that has struck me about this type of music, it’s how present it is. Hence probably why it’s so popular with the youth of today but how long will it last? Certain records seem timeless, unfortunately this one doesn’t.

I must admit I also know little about the genre. My knowledge extends as far as John Barnes World Cup rap for ‘World in Motion’, so that’s not saying much. I have however been unfortunate enough to have stumbled across plenty of local ‘MC’s’ scattered across the internet and I’m glad to inform you that The Asylum Seekas are in a different league.

90% of the time local artists seem to struggle. 17 songs is also a bit excessive. Whenever I sit down to listen to an album and discover there are more than

12 I get rather perturbed. It’s almost impossible to resist the temptation of the skip button half way through every song just to get to the end. Contrary to Toms ‘welcomed’ guest appearances I am even more inclined to avoid those. There is nothing more annoying for me than when bands fill albums with guest singers, musicians or the majority of the time somebody playing the bongo drums. There are already 5 in the band and its hard enough remembering who they are let alone a host of guests which no one has ever heard of or quite frankly cares about. Though I find myself getting a little negative. As a selfconfessed hip hop know nothing I am impressed with ‘Recorded Delivery’ and even though I still wouldn’t choose to listen to the majority of it I would recommend you do and at least give it a chance. If anything it’s comforting to know that The Asylum Seekas are doing Guernsey proud on that front. So in the words of my favourite rapper John Barnes - they aint no Hooligans, these aint no football songs! Tyler

Jonny Lives! Debut album Get Steady (which featured members of The Strokes and Fountains of Wayne) landed the band appearances on Late Night W/ Conan O’brien, The CBS Early Show, Extra, Good Day Live and just about every major rock and alternative morning radio show in the U.S.A. Shows with Stevie Wonder, The Killers, The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s, Everclear, Patti Smith, Sonic Youth and Meatloaf certainly helped to introduce what The NME Magazine called “Pant-droppingly brilliant” 60’s influenced melodies and growl which earned them Single Of The Week nods in the press and regular rotation on BBC1 radio. Their 2nd album “Revolution For Free” was voted “Best New Music of 2011” alongside The Rolling Stones, The Red Hot Chile 106

Peppers, Jane’s Addiction, Coldplay, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, and The Smithereens by NYC’s #1 rock station Q104.3. “Revolution For Free” will be out in the UK in the Spring of 2012 and several songs are available for free download at www.jonnylives.com.
