elcome back avid Gallery-goers, and to any new attendees: a very warm hello. As usual, we’ve got a fantastic line up to pique your interests this month. What’s that I hear you ask? The theme? Well, this month, it’s Vintage. Yes, vintage as in old. Vintage as in time tested. Vintage as in brilliant. Just what should be revived from our halcyon years? Well, you’ll find that question posed and pondered throughout this entire issue. Whether it’s fashion, motors, films, or even old skool video games (surely I’m not the only one who remembers Street Fighter 1?) that you want to read about, you’ll find it here. Join us in reviewing the history of the Volkswagen Beetle. Take a stroll down memory lane and see if you agree with our take on what fashions should be revived from yesteryear. Whatever conclusions you draw, there’s bound to be something in this hallowed tome that you feel passionate about. And of course, as well as our themed content, you’ll find all our regular local content: the Hill Climb, cookery lessons at the Farmhouse, profiles of local artists, Literary Festival countdowns, even a Laska’s cocktails master-class. But enough about what you’ll find within, let’s talk, for a minute, about what vintage means to the human being. For me, wine is the perfect analogy: I’m becoming fuller bodied, and I’m certainly an acquired taste. Primarily (and like most of you, I’m sure) I’m getting better with age. Something I constantly need to remind myself of in a culture increasingly obsessed with youth and short-lived fads. So, buck the trend to constantly seek the new, and prepare yourself for a nostalgic feast of what has gone before. Both the best and the not-sobest will be found within, and it’s up to you, dear readers, to make sense of it all.

[ACTION]
TYLER EDMONDS Victorian Times to fulfill my dreams of being a chimney sweep.
JASON SHAMBROOK It would have to be the 1967 Grand National at Aintree which was won by Foinavon at odds of 100/1. I would have had £5,000 to win with Trevor Gallienne which would have annoyed him!
NAOMI BISHOP The 1960s - to go and see all that amazing music!
THEO LEWORTHY Right now, probably medieval Europe. I recently read George RR Martin’s ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series (which is awesome) and it’s inspired me to be a knight, or the devotee of some weird religious mystery cult. This is unfortunate, as knighthood and weird cults aren’t quite the romantic adventure stuff they used to be. Now they’re just boring or insane. Oh well.
TONY BRASSELL If I could go back to any point in History I think I would like to be in London on the 8th May 1945 to hear that the war in Europe had ended and experience the joy and relief that the announcement must have brought. It must have been absolutely fantastic for everyone who was there.

MARTINE ELLIS Whilst I don’t really think of myself as a ‘bra burning’ feminist, I am prepared to stand up for what I believe in, and I think I would have made a pretty good suffragette! So I’d go back to the early 1900s (ideally skipping the First World War some how). I’d chain myself to the Houses of Parliament and fight to get women the right to vote.
Also, in reality, if I had lived in medieval Europe, rather than being a knight or a mystic I almost certainly would have been a peasant, whose lot in life was probably mud-farming or something equally mind-numbing, and whose daily diet consisted of scummy turnips left over by my rich masters. Even so, the political manoeuvring and awesome visions and battles of G R R Martins fantasy epic leave me no room for misgivings: medieval Europe it is.

HOROSCOPES
YOUR MONTHLY HOROSCOPES words | Sharon Ward
illustration | Helina Matthews
ARIES March 21 -April 19
Mars in Scorpio brings passion and heat into your life this month. Your energy is strong and it’s up to you whether you use it for good or bad. Focus upon your desires and anything you want between the 1st and the 6th September is yours for the taking. Take care not to burn yourself in your pursuit of pleasure though.
TAURUS April 20 -May 20
Venus into Leo on the 6th brings strength and optimism. This month love begets love and what you give will be reflected back within close relationships. Selfish actions from others may drive you to distraction be the peacekeeper and you’ll reap the rewards for your patience and tolerance.
GEMINI May 21 -June 20
Mercury will give you plenty to think about this month. You’ll be presented with some tricky issues by some equally tricky people. Luckily you’re clever enough to work out what you need to act on and what you need to leave well alone. This ability to make the right choice is a sign of real wisdom.
CANCER June 21 -July 22
Venus moving out of your Sun sign this month means that you might have to give into others gracefully. You are still as charming and loving as ever – it’s just that you might not get your own way as much as you have been recently. Look at this as a time to rebalance – to give back some of what you’ve received.
LEO July 23 -August 22
Recently money matters may not have gone quite the way you thought they should. Right now the more you believe in yourself the more you’ll gain. Don’t waste time with petty details – a more relaxed approach will work wonders for your self esteem and perhaps will even help your bank balance.
VIRGO August 23 -September 22
The Sun in Virgo until the 22nd allows for you to shine as you truly should. Make sure that others know just how much work you’ve put in recently – this is not the time to hide your light under a bushel. Mercury in Libra from the 16th will allow you to do this tactfully without causing waves.
LIBRA September 23 -October 22
Life has been a little bit too serious for your liking recently. That’s all about to change, but first you have to face your responsibilities and deal with issues that you’ve been avoiding. Once that’s done, then next month will be nice and relaxing – just the way you like it.
SCORPIO October 23 -November 21
Influences this month bring strength and the desire for progress. As you firmly grip the steering wheel of life, take some time to look out of the window, or you might miss the beautiful view. Life is the journey, not just the destination. From the 18th you’ll be able to exercise your personal power effectively.
SAGITTARIUS November 22 -December 21
Why do you keep asking so many questions – the answer is staring you in the face? Perhaps the obvious answer maybe seems too easy. You don’t have to overcomplicate everything and what is simple is best right now. If you can’t work it out on your own - from the 16th you’ll find friends will step in to help.
CAPRICORN December 22 -January 19
Life has been a little frustrating recently and you may have found moving forwards more than a little tough. You’ve made more progress than you think though. From the 18th you’ll open up to the world and it will respond to your positive mood and everything will once again begin to make sense.
AQUARIUS January 20 -February 18
You want peace and quiet and yet life seems to be more than a bit up and down. Have you considered that you might be bringing it upon yourself? Stop making waves for the sake of it and look at reaching peaceful conclusions in warlike situations. From the 10th to the 16th mend bridges so that you can move on.
PISCES February 19 -March 20
There’s an important decision that needs to be made this month. You may well be torn between two choices and neither seems to be quite what you want. Don’t stress, the answer will come to you from somewhere very unexpected. The less you worry the more clearly you’ll see the resolution.

NOW THAT’S VINTAGE! In 2010, the oldest bottle of champagne was found at the bottom of the Baltic Sea. 200ft underwater, a case of Veuve Clicquot was discovered by divers inside an undiscovered wreckage from the 1780s. Divers said the 200 year old bubbly was ‘sweet, tobacco and oak-tasting’. It must have been good as each bottle sold for around £27,000 at auction!

104 YEARS OLD AND PARAGLIDING?!?!?!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GSrWGYwdTU 104-year-old Peggy McAlpine is the oldest female to paraglide off a mountain. On April 14 this year, the Scottish woman jumped off a 2,400ft peak in order to claim the Guinness Book of World Records for the oldest person to ever go paragliding. This, however, was not her first jump. In 2007 she made the jump to claim the title at 100 years of age. This was stolen from her by a 101-year-old woman last year and so she set out to successfully retrieve her title.

THE UKALADEEZ AT CREASEYS
THE UKULADEEZ AT CREASEYS The all-girl ukulele group recently entertained shoppers at a Creaseys charity event organised by Soroptimist International. The evening was held in order to raise funds for Guernsey Cheshire Home and Maison St Pierre on the 26th July. Emily, Jo and Mimi had lots of fun serenading onlookers with their covers of country blues, traditionals and Disney songs. Without the usual constrictions of a stage and microphones the girls took advantage of the slightly obscure venue and wondered about like fluttering troubadours. They played with a rather reluctant mannequin in the shop window, in the lifts (turns out the Creaseys lift is pretty small and so can only fit an audience of one, very exclusive) and where they obviously felt most at home being girls: in the make-up department.
Elliott Mariess was up to his old tricks of making lovely films of the local music scene and recorded the gig which you can check out at guernseygigs.com. To see more of the girls and when they are playing visit their Facebook page facebook.com/ukuladeez

CARL HESTER RETURNS TO SARK Carl Hester returned home to a warm welcome and was greeted by many adoring fans in Sark! Carl Hester won a gold medal at the London Olympics along with fellow riders Charlotte and Laura in the team dressage event. Carl grew up in Sark and was passionate about horses from an early age. He learnt to ride on a donkey and left Sark at the age of 19 to work at a riding school in Hampshire. Although Carl has won 51 titles in his career, this is his first Olympic medal after competing in three previous Games. All around the UK the Royal Mail have been celebrating every gold medal win by painting a post box gold in each winner’s hometown and Guernsey Post decided to honour Carl’s win in the same way.

WHEN VINTAGE WAS OLD
words | Kay Worthington
get this straight. So, ”Vintage” is just recycled “old”? OK, now I get it. Problem is that I am now so old that I remember shabby chic, when it was just shabby. I lived “the dream” – in fact, I am still living it! Whilst friends and passing strangers are now done up to the nines, living in fancy architecturally designed houses, with equally attractive GAP attired children in tow, my personal pleasure is finding a tshirt in the cupboard with less than one hole in the arm and only a tiny speck of food on the collar. This sort of holey appearance is apparently fashionably distressed, but if we are truly honest, it is, in fact, like me, just distressed! This surely is the world gone mad. Old pieces of furniture scrubbed down with sandpaper to present a scruffy looking exterior, only to be painted up again, and marketed as “vintage”. How can things which are, dare I mention it, old – now be so well thought of? When did this happen? When was it fashionable to wear your mother’s old curtains redesigned as a rather snazzy matching two piece? This is the problem that women of a certain age and disposition are now finding themselves trying to overcome. What is vintage for one person, is simply old tat for another. I fully remember the thrill of buying my first ra ra skirt. I had wondered into Number 19, swooning over that lovely young man George Michael, knowing that he would make a wonderful husband….. (sorry, I was green as grass in those days), before hobbling over to Etam in my springy pixie boots and checking out the new styles in swingy skirts. I duly sashayed into Barbarellas wearing my new red striped dress and I thought I was the bee’s knees. I recall that I was with a tall friend Sandra, who delighted in wearing a sequinned boob tube. I never managed to stay in one of those, (chest ledge issues you see), so I don’t have the embarrassing memories of some drunk old bloke pulling the tube down to have a bit of a thrill seek. But this is the funny thing – I definitely saw a ra-ra skirt on sale in town recently – some thirty years or more since the first outing – and boob tubes albeit under a different name. These were under the banner of “Vintage items.” Nothing like making you feel old! I find it funny to see such clothes being sold in St Peter Port. Even funnier to see your daughters wearing the same things you did many years previously, which you got rid of to Oxfam when flares and platforms went the way of Spacehoppers and Smash instant potato. But it has to be said that Vintage is a friendly sort of word – the sort you feel all warm and cuddly porridgy about. It conjours up dozing
20 VINTAGE.indb 20
Labradors in front of a roaring fire and old pootle-along cars with poop poop horns driven by elderly men with pipes. What is doesn’t conjour up for me at least is the idea that anything over five years old is now automatically termed “vintage style”. I like a glass of the vino as much as the next middle aged woman trying to come to terms with a particularly perplexing knitting pattern problem, but I won’t be found buying a bottle of Vintage Petrus, the price of which, if left undiscovered until the checkout, will make you have a coronary. Magazines, especially in this Jubilee Year have gone overboard with the idea that everyone loves cupcakes served on vintage plates. This is not a bad thing, I love cake with or without a glass cake stand to rest them on in-between bites – so I can completely understand that idea. Lovely old china, pre-loved, (not termed secondhand please), sold at great prices in our Mansell Street Acorn Antique Shops. A mismatched array of tea cups is now the chic thing to have in your home. Cor la, that’s lucky eh? – with a family like mine who have never really been able to maintain one complete set of crockery, it seems we might just be “in” at last! Vintage items I suppose, are just another way of recycling – and in that regard, it is good news for the environment and fantastic news for savvy shop owners. We see vintage items all around the place, not only in terms of fashion, household equipment, cars or decorating, but in food stuffs too. I mean to say, when did ham hocks become popular again? How about pigs trotters and corned beef hash? These were family favourites back in the day, but are now being touted as vintage favourites and not being sold at vintage i.e. old prices – they costs quite a pretty penny in some upmarket restaurants. I just hope they don’t “rehash” nouvelle cuisine, which had to be the biggest con of the century. Two baby carrots and a smidgeon of pigeon on a plate can hardly be described as a feast, but we were paying huge sums of money to be conned by some of the best chefs in town! I do fear that the idea may be making a resurgence however – sadly the usage of “foam” on a plate, now seems to be pretty trendy. What’s that all about? Foam? Purlease….!!! However, I suppose the whole idea of anything vintage is just another reminder of how nothing in life is really new; and that when you start recognising things in antique shop windows as being the height of fashion when you were a small child, you realise just how Vintage you really are.

GOOD OLD DAYS
A NOSTALGIC VIEW AT THINGS FROM THE GOOD OLD DAYS, AND A COUPLE WHICH SHOULD JUST STAY THERE
W
ith the revival of fads such as the Batman, Spiderman, Avengers, Lennon-glasses, Madonna crosses (consult ‘Like A Prayer’) and my personal favourite, The Spice Girls, albeit for 5 minutes of the Olympic closing ceremony, it could be fair to state that our culture has swallowed an overdue spoonful of the good old days. With that in mind, we are reminded of a few things which should revived from the golden past, and consequently the things that should stay there. For instance, a friend of mine at university who too is surviving on Sainsbury’s value teabags and noodles, spent the past year only buying her clothes from charity shops. Amongst the vast amounts of paisley we had to wade through, she ended up with a surprising amount of amazing designer clothing and an incredibly individual one-off wardrobe. Oxfam 1: Topshop 0. The2 Clangers, and their entire ethos. Not only are they recycling whizzes, environmentally efficient and promote a simple life of peace and harmony, but they are the epitome of ‘vintage’. Whilst being classified as ‘vintage’ themselves (no one else really knows what they can be classified as) they spend their days reviving things, even finding the time to make the Iron Chicken out of collected scrap metal. Something which is only really seen in black and white films by my generation is Old School Romance. Call me cynical, but nowadays courting involves random, randy young men sneaking up behind in a club and attempting to ‘bump nd grind’ with, ie/ thrust against your leg (Charming as it sounds) as opposed to take you out dancing, send you a text as opposed to flowers and, be chatted up in a “you dropped your hanky” manner as opposed to “Crackin’ rack sunshine”. A girl wants to have her chair pulled out for her in a restaurant BEFORE she attempts to sit down, not after, and be worshipped by Stevie Wonder’s ‘Isn’t she lovely’, rather than commanded to “Take A Dirty Picture” by Taio Cruz. Bring back Barry, Marvin and Smokey please. Tom Brown’s Schooldays-esque fights in the playground. Have

a problem, have a punch up, get some bruises and then pick yourself up, brush yourself down and carry on with your day. Far more efficient than ambiguous, drawn out and extremely public Facebook disputes. While we are at it, what on earth happened to Disney Films? Just the other day a friend’s and my own film of choice was Dumbo, accompanied by hot chocolate and marshmallows. My 10 year old sister opted for the Camp Rock, a modern Disney film fuelled with teenage angst and the Jonas Brothers. Whilst I still, and shamelessly, get excited by awkward looking birds singing ‘When I see an elephant fly’, she was humming along to what sounded like a tormented auto tune machine. That all said, not all things from ‘the good old days’ were good. Curtain fringes (think Byker Grove) and Conical Bras are something to be heard of, and never seen. Ever. Unless on Lady Gaga, who resembles someone who has had the misfortune of falling into a giant toy box whilst covered in glue. On the subject of bizarre fashion trends, let us take the opportunity to make one thing clear. Boys: wearing your jeans below your skinny bottom does not make you look remotely gangster. No one wants to see your skanky pants. Invest in a belt. Being born in the early 90’s, I am one part of my generation who is baffled by the enormous mobile phones that preceded us. These days, we do just about everything on our phones, from calls/ texts/media messaging to social networking, taking photos, making calendars and reading the paper. I cannot fathom how much more stuff people had to carry around before the iPhone/ blackberry…not that they would have any room on their person due to the colossal black bricks complete with awkwardly lanky antenna that would take up the space in ones bag. Did they make larger pockets 20 years ago, or did everyone have a bowling bag to hand? Like with every fashion trend, and appallingly cringe worthy photo, things from the past have a habit of coming back to haunt us. I figure ‘if it aint broke, don’t fix it’…but if it is ‘broke’, quickly bury it in the past and pretend that it never happened.

The Guernsey lifeboat station is one of only four in the Channel Islands. Operating for over 200 years, the crews of the Guernsey lifeboats have been honoured with several awards for gallantry. The first Lifeboat Station on Guernsey was established at St Sampsons in 1803 following representation to the then States of Guernsey by the Douzaine (local parish council) of St Peter Port. The Station was taken over by the RNLI in 1861 and subsequently moved to St Peter Port, where it is presently based, in 1881. The Station has seen a variety of lifeboats over the years and the current lifeboat is the Severn class ‘Spirit of Guernsey’. The Island has always been proud to support the Lifeboat Station and crews; in 1973 a special appeal raised a considerable sum towards the cost of the Arun Class “Sir William Arnold”. Twenty years later an appeal was launched to raise £1 million to support the building of “Spirit of Guernsey”. Thanks to the generosity of friends in Guernsey, Sark, Herm and further afield, the target was achieved within one year.

The demand for the service was so great that Chad began recruiting volunteers to help him run the service and from there, Samaritans has grown over the last 50 years to Samaritans as it is today. Chad’s belief was the same as those of Samaritans today: that by listening to someone’s problems and offering them the time and space to work things through, they may be able to find the strength to find a way forward.
BRITISH RED CROSS SOCIETY BAILIWICK OF GUERNSEY BRANCH RED CROSS HOUSE, ROHAIS, ST. PETER PORT, GY1 1YW 01481 723 088
The British Red Cross was founded in 1870 to give neutral help to sick and wounded soldiers. The British Red Cross now helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. It is part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. It enables vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, helps them to recover and move on with their lives. The Guernsey Branch is currently recruiting volunteers for the shop, emergency response work including driving in support of the States of Guernsey Civil Emergencies Plan. The branch raises funds through: British Red Cross charity shop, Rohais, St. Peter Port - telephone 723088, a fete held at Government House in July, Red Cross Appeal week held in May and other fund raising events throughout the year.
The RNLI relies entirely on voluntary donations. Records show that the Guernsey Lifeboats have been launched over 1,330 times and saved almost 600 lives. Guernsey can be extremely proud of the many Coxswains and crew who have accumulated a most impressive number of RNLI gallantry awards with no less than 2 Gold Medals, 8 Silver Medals and 15 Bronze Medals being awarded since 1861. There were also 6 Silver Medals awarded before the RNLI took over the Station. In addition, the bravery and skill of local crews have been recognised by several foreign Governments with awards from France, Norway, Greece and Liberia. This show of bravery is almost unparalleled by any other RNLI Station in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.

SAMARITANS GUERNSEY
St. Peter Port has a Church and Community Centre at Clifton Hall which provides groups for the elderly, a luncheon club, parent and toddler groups, after-school clubs, and children’s activities. It also provides lunch on Christmas Day for the lonely.
The Samaritans was set up in 1953 by Chad Varah, a vicar working in central London at the time. He wanted to provide an emergency service that people could contact when they were feeling despairing and suicidal. Chad’s inspiration came from an experience he had in his own parish. He had carried out a funeral for a young girl of 15 who had taken her own life because she feared she had contracted an STD. In reality she was menstruating.
St. Sampson’s has a Community Centre in Nocq Road, which provides a charity shop and café, community based actisvities and a luncheon club. OUR COMMUNITY FREE MICRO CHIPPING
the first night of the series. Despite the very low levels of wind on Tuesday’s race, Stuart Bloese, Architectural Assistant at Create, won on the first night in his RS500 boat sailing with his wife Carol in the fast-fleet class, on a race route that ran from Terres Point and back twice. The other boats racing in the fast class are RS800, and Hobie Tigers (catamarans), RS100 and RS700. The s low fleets match the Olymp Stephen Wray won the slowfleet race in the first week in his GP14.
Shelter Staff at the GSPCA were on hand to chip cats and dogs and to chat about responsible pet ownership. No appointment was necessary and it was the first ever Welfare Road Show the GSPCA has organized, yielding a pleasing turn out. There was no charge for the microchip; all that the GSPCA asked was for a small donation. On average 2 in 3 dogs and cats that come into the Shelter as a stray aren’t chipped but this weekend another 20 dogs and cats were chipped and a wonderful £80 donated by the generous public that attended. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said, “The weather was on our side and we got to meet some wonderful cats and dogs! From October we are looking to run a series of these events at other estates. Micro chipping is still only £4.99 at the Shelter and we can also engrave tags too so anyone needing it done please pop in any day except Sunday between 9am and 4.30pm”. For more details please contact the Animal Shelter on 01481 257261

FUNDRAISING FOR AUTISM
Autism for three years from 2012 – 2014 and has set a group fundraising target of £50,000. All money raised in Guernsey will be donated to the Guernsey branch of the National Autistic Society, as part of JT’s three year commitment to the charity.
TEENAGE CANCER TRUST BALL GROWS IN SIZE TO MEET DEMAND This year’s Teenage Cancer Trust annual ball has grown to meet demand following its success in 2011. Last year the event, sponsored by Investec Specialist Bank, raised £45,000 and took the charity past its target of £100,000. This year five extra tables have been added to meet demand. The Teenage Cancer Trust Crystal Ball, which takes place on Saturday 6th October, will be the largest event at the Duke of Richmond Hotel since its refurbishment. The evening will be a gala dinner with entertainment, music and dancing.
JT’s staff around the world joined together to cycle a total of 1327.5 miles in 24 hours, smashing their target mileage of 1,000 miles and raising almost £3,000 for global Autism charities. During their annual Charity Day on Friday 27th July, around 160 JT employees took part in an ‘Olympic’ Challenge, a 24 hour, 1,000 mile cycle challenge which started in Melbourne, handed over to Oslo, London and the Channel Islands and finished up in Boston. Almost 100 staff signed up for a 30 minute slot on one of the static bikes, which were set up in all JT offices. In addition, some staff took to their own bikes to cycle to and from work and the total mileage was matched by JT with a £1 donation for each mile. Further funds were raised through a raffle, global cake bake-off, a sports themed sweepstake, and other in office activities. Paul D Taylor, Managing Director of JT (Guernsey), said: “We are absolutely delighted that our Charity Day was so successful and our staff excelled themselves in raising a significant amount of money in just one day. The cycle challenge was a fantastic example of just how successful we can be when we join together.” The totals for each office were Melbourne 142 miles; Oslo 27 miles; London 29 miles; Guernsey 170.5 miles; Jersey road miles 309; Jersey static bike miles 572.85; and Boston 76.7 miles. The JT Group has committed to supporting the developmental disorder
“We are delighted to be sponsoring this fantastic event for a second year and we hope to be able to help Teenage Cancer Trust’s Guernsey committee raise even more money in 2012 to help fund the build and running of the unit for teenagers and young adults with cancer at Southampton General Hospital,” said Stephen Henry, head of Investec Bank Limited. Islanders will have the opportunity to see some of the entertainers for themselves from 2.30pm in Market Square on the afternoon of the ball, where they will be performing to help raise awareness of Teenage Cancer Trust’s Guernsey Appeal. “This year we wanted to provide members of the public with an opportunity to see some of the fantastic talent we are able to bring over for the ball as a thank you to islanders for their continued support of the charity,” said Mr Henry. In July, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust approved the cancer unit designed by Teenage Cancer Trust. Enabling work has now begun with the main construction starting in October and a completion date set for summer 2013. Once open, the Southampton Teenage Cancer Trust unit will complement the 21 other specialist units the charity has built in NHS hospitals across the UK since 1990. “With Investec’s help and the generosity of many islanders we were able to exceed our £100,000 target for last year. This year fundraising has once again been so successful and support locally has been incredible,” said Teenage Cancer Trust Guernsey chairman, Jay Aylmer. GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

FILM REVIEW
FILM REVIEW
UP&COMING
DIRECTOR OF THE MONTH
‘The Master of Suspense’, Sir Alfred Hitchcock is quite rightly one of the most celebrated filmmakers of all time. Starting his career in the 1920’s making silent films, Hitchcock made his name during the ‘Golden Age of Hollywood’, with films such as The 39 Steps, Rope, Dial M for Murder, North by Northwest, Vertigo, Psycho and The Birds. Hitchcock was a pioneer of ‘voyeur’ filmmaking, in which the audience is placed in the shoes of the protagonist, only seeing what he or she sees. He mastered editing and camera techniques in order to create high amounts of suspense, tension, thrills, and in some cases horror. For example, the shower scene in Psycho includes 77 different camera angles in as many cuts, many of them extreme close ups, only glimpsing the tip of the knife or the victims eye. This was intended to disorientate and also horrify the viewer. Hitchcock said himself that he used this technique to “transfer the menace from the screen into the mind of the audience”. Without Hitchcock’s masterful use of camera and editing that scene could lose nearly all of its power. Hitchcock also liked to explore the psychology of his characters, for example the paranoia of L.B Jefferies in ‘Rear Window’, or the psychopathic schizophrenia of Norman Bates to create interesting character studies which explored the human mind. Through his remarkable films and his pioneering of cinematic techniques, Alfred Hitchcock has not only become one of the all time great directors, but also a cultural icon in his own right.
DREDD 3D
A prohibition era Western Gangster film, Lawless follows three bootlegging brothers (Hardy, LaBeouf & Clarke) whose operation is under attack by corrupt Virginian officials who want a cut of the profits. Based upon a short story by Matt Bondurant, who himself wrote the story based upon the experiences of his own grandfather and great-grandfather in the prohibition era of America. The film was a forerunner for the 2012 Palme d’Or award, so expect good things.
An unrelated reboot of the 1995 film which starred Sylvester Stallone, this comic book adaptation follows Dredd (Urban), a futuristic police officer who acts as Judge, Jury and Executioner in a dystopian future where crimes rules the city. The first of a planned trilogy, ‘Dredd 3D’ has already received high praise from film critics and fans of the comic book alike.

The fight takes her from Washington to Tokyo as she struggles to survive in a world on the brink of oblivion.
STAGECOACH
CASABLANCA
REAR WINDOW
The film which gave John Wayne his breakthrough role and which also established John Ford as one of the most influential Hollywood directors of the age. Outlaw The Ringo Kid (Wayne) and a rag tag group of undesirables travel through dangerous Apache territory, where they must learn to work together in order to survive. Ford’s sweeping visuals of Monument Valley create a stunning backdrop for the narrative, and the exhilarating action sequences and dangerous stunts make it visually enthralling. Stagecoach united Ford and Wayne in a partnership which would come to define the Western genre.
Perhaps the defining film of ‘The Golden Era’ and one of the most famous films of all time, Casablanca is a masterpiece of the Hollywood system. Set against the backdrop of unoccupied Africa in World War Two, nightclub owner Rick Blaine (Bogart) encounters an old lover and her husband, a resistance leader against the Nazi’s, and must choose between love and virtue. Upon release it was widely believed to be little out of the ordinary, just one of the many hundreds of films that Hollywood studios produced each year. It went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture and has since become widely nominated as one of the best films of all time.
Thought to be one of Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest films, which coming from a filmography which includes Psycho, North by North West and Vertigo, is high praise indeed. Photographer L.B Jefferies (Stewart) has broken his leg during a dangerous assignment, and is confined to a wheel chair in his apartment. He amuses himself by observing his neighbours in his apartment complex, and becomes convinced he has witnessed a murder. The film also stars Grace Kelley as Jefferies socialite girlfriend, one of her last and arguably best roles. Full of his trademark suspense and tension, the film is a stunning piece of Hitchcockian cinema.

BOOK CORNER I STILL REMEMBER A POSTER I SAW IN A SCHOOL WHICH PROCLAIMED ‘ YOU’RE HISTORY!’ AND IT’S TRUE THAT WHO WE ARE – AS A SOCIETY AND AS INDIVIDUALS – IS PARTLY SHAPED BY THE PAST. I’VE ALWAYS LEARNED MORE ABOUT HISTORY FROM NOVELS THAN FROM TEXTBOOKS: WHEN YOU GET STUCK INTO A STORY IT DOESN’T FEEL LIKE LEARNING, IT JUST HAPPENS. THIS MONTH WE HAVE EXCELLENT REVIEWS FROM ALPHA WEARING FROM THE PRESS BOOK SHOP AND ED JEWELL FROM GUILLE-ALLÈS LIBRARY, BOTH OF WHOM ARE GREAT SUPPORTERS OF THE GUERNSEY LITERARY FESTIVAL.

BRING UP THE BODIES by Hilary Mantel This is the second part of Hilary Mantel’s Tudor trilogy, following on from Man Booker Prize winner Wolf Hall. The story follows the actions of Henry VIII’s political fixer, Thomas Cromwell, as he clears the way for Henry to marry Jane Seymour, at the expense of Anne Boleyn’s head. Mantel succeeds in making the amoral Cromwell a sympathetic character. Acute characterisation, coupled with an intensely evocative writing style, breathes fresh life into doublets that have been worn to the point of cliché. While Bring Up the Bodies can be enjoyed without having read Wolf Hall, the first book does add depth to the second. (Ed Jewell, Customer Services Librarian, Guille- Allès Library)
THE SONG OF ACHILLES by Madeline Miller Madeline Miller's debut novel won the 2012 Orange Prize for Fiction. It mixes polished historical fiction with Greek holiday locations, and a scholar's attention to classical sources with a generous dash of m/m romance, for a sparkling read. The rich world of Homer's Iliad is revealed through the eyes of Patroclus, a surprisingly modern young man, at odds with an age of mythical heroes. Golden boy Achilles, every step mapped out for him by his royal inheritance, his bitchy sea goddess mother, and his tragic destiny as the greatest warrior of his time, makes an unexpected choice and takes Patroclus as his companion. Together, they will face the onslaught of the Trojan War. (Livia Bluecher, Film, Poetry & Prose Sub-Committee, GAC) BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

THE TENTH GIFT
by Jane Johnson Given an antique embroidery book as a parting gift by her married lover, Julia notices some notations in the margins written by a young woman, Cat, who lived in 17th-century Cornwall. Learning that Cat and the whole congregation of a church were brutally kidnapped by Barbary Pirates and taken to Morocco, Julia decides to visit Morocco to investigate Cat's history and finds her own adventure. Before reading this novel, I was unaware that Barbary Pirates routinely raided the shores of Devon and Cornwall and abducted men, women and children to sell as slaves. Alternating between the 17th century and today, this is a gripping page-turner. (Alpha Wearing, The Press Book Shop)
GUERNICA by Dave Boling After seeing Picasso’s famous painting ‘Guernica’, I was intrigued to find out more about this Basque town which was destroyed by the German Luftwaffe during the Spanish Civil War. Miguel Navarro finds himself in conflict with the Spanish Civil Guard and flees his Basque fishing village to make a new start in Guernica, where he meets and falls in love with Miren. The region and the Basque way of life are beautifully portrayed and the Red Baron and even Picasso make an appearance. By the time the town is bombed, you have become so familiar with the families who live there that their tragedy and pain is heartbreaking. (Caroline Mauger, PR/Marketing)
UPDATE If you like dressing up in vintage clothes, the twenties is an era which is bound to inspire you. 1920s dress is encouraged at a Murder Mystery evening in the atmospheric setting of Castle Cornet on Friday 14 September, 7-9pm. ‘Death at Downturn Abbey’ will be performed by The Murder Maestros, a group of professional actors and writers. Amongst them are Mel Giedroyc, well known as a comedienne and TV presenter, and Jacqui Szlachetko, who grew up in Guernsey and has over 16 years’ experience in writing, directing and acting in community projects in West London. You can expect to see some largerthan-life country house characters and a murder fairly early on in the evening. Cross-examinations by the quick-witted detective will reveal devious secrets in the family. The style is slightly-saucy humour rather than horror - so it's a fun, light-hearted evening. Audience participation is encouraged: can you untangle the web of lies and sordid secrets? Perhaps you will be the super sleuth to win the prize? To book tickets for ‘Death at Downturn Abbey’ – as well as all other events – just go to www.arts.gg and click on ‘Guernsey Literary Festival’. We’re counting down the days – the Festival is almost here!

Tina McCallan
Tim Bowditch
Tina McCallan is a Guernsey-born artist, currently based between London, Guernsey and Turkey. She has done several pieces of work in Guernsey in the past – most of which are community based.‘…I am concerned with bringing together diverse groups of people to make copies or re-creations of wellknown paintings. The idea comes from several sources. Having researched painting practices in the 15th century, to my surprise, I discovered Old Masters did not actually paint all of their pictures but instead employed anonymous assistants to paint sections for them...’
Tim Bowditch is a Guernsey-born artist, currently based in London. His work focusses on photography and film, and he recently curated the greenhouse exhibition ‘Forwards, backwards and forwards again’.

‘…I would say that when I was at University I was interested in ideas of Nationality and Community and most of my work was made around that, and that spilled over into the project that I made for Guernsey. But now I would say that if there was a theme in my work, it would be the fact that I don’t work on my own anymore…’
As with all funding bodies, we have a criteria based on certain priorities including Accessibility and Communication, Audience Engagement and Art in Public Places; you can find out about these in detail at www.arts. gg under ‘Funding’. Should your project or event match any or all of the criteria listed on the website, it will have a much better chance of receiving funding from the Guernsey Arts Commission - though we appreciate that not every aspect of the criteria may apply. This opportunity is for you, the artist, so get informed and get applying! We’re here to support you! The next Funding Application deadline is Tuesday 11 September. ART IN ISLANDS
INTERESTED IN ART? WE’D LOVE TO TALK TO YOU… INTERESTED IN ART? WE’D LOVE TO TALK TO YOU… The Guernsey Arts Commission is always on the lookout for people with a passion for the arts who would like to get involved with some of the interesting and varied projects that we run. Our main focus for all our volunteers is on community projects, ranging from weekly workshops, sessions at the prison and visits to, for example, Les Genats and St Martins estates. We also always need help with the delivery of our very successful annual events such as Art on the Beach and Arts Sunday. The more people we have who are willing to volunteer and work with us on a basis to suit their own days and time, then the further the GAC programmes can stretch and we hope we can make them into something more that can offer unique opportunities to the people of Guernsey whatever their age and situation.
TO GET INVOLVED, CONTACT SARAH BY EMAILING SARAH@ARTS.GG OR CALLING 01480 709747 WHY I VOLUNTEER WITH THE GUERNSEY ARTS COMMISSION COMMUNITY ARTS PROGRAMME… Pete: My name is Pete and I have been volunteering with the Community Arts program at Les Genats Estate since December 2011. I work alongside roughly five other great people on the project. Every member of the team is passionate about working with young people, appreciating the potential that each child there has and thriving in the challenging environment. Most recently, a few of us have been leading sessions using rolls of wallpaper and an assortment of 2D and 3D materials to create collective works in the form of murals. Covering the table with the wallpaper, we have encouraged the children to explore colour and form, assisting with drawing techniques and most importantly exercising their imaginations; leading to the creation of eclectic group works. In addition to the above, another temporary addition to the team, who has introduced music and dance into Les Genats estate. Leading workshops where he teaches the young people hip hop/ break dance inspired moves, these ultimately culminate in choreographed routines. This followed on from a previous project which tapped into the children’s enthusiasm for street art, where young people supervised by myself and others would practice their calligraphy with spray paint to create works of art on wooden boards. Every member of the team is encouraged to bring new ideas to the program. I encourage everyone with a passion for the arts to get involved, whether that may be music, dance, visual arts, drama, photography, spoken word and so on! BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

CULTURE
IN THIS SHOW AT THE GREENHOUSE, THE GUERNSEY ARTS COMMISSION IS TAKING A LOOK AT 6 OF THE BEST ARTWORKS FROM GUERNSEY SCHOOLS’ 2012 FINAL YEAR SHOWS. THE SELECTED WORKS COME FROM THE DIVERSE ART COURSES DELIVERED ACROSS THE ISLAND’S FURTHER EDUCATION ESTABLISHMENTS. 6 OF THE BEST is an exhibition of local students’ work which showcases the best of the Grammar School, Elizabeth College, Ladies’ College, and the College of Further Education end of year shows. These include works by Flo Le Couteur, Joel Lewis, Harry Martel, Joshua Moore, Harry Stephens and Brad Sumner. Spanning a wide range of arts disciplines from clay work to woodwork and sculpture, images of New York City in acrylic paint on canvas to charcoal on wood the process offers Guernsey students a chance to display their work to a different audience and experience being involved in an exhibition, many for the first time outside the confines of their schools. The content of the exhibition involved going to as many of the Final Year Shows, through June and July 2012, as possible. In the pursuit of fairness the selection process took into consideration the quality of the work, the presentation, and the development shown from each student’s supporting material. For the students, this exhibition is an opportunity to develop their understanding about how what they create ‘fits’ with the rest of the world around them, and how displaying a piece in a different context could have a dramatic effect on it's meaning. All of the six selected have shown a good understanding of their chosen medium, after viewing all the work, narrowing it down to just 6 students made the decision very hard! The exhibition runs from Thursday 20th September at the greenhouse and is a chance for everyone to find out what the students’ inspirations were and what they are planning to do with their talents in the future.
OPENING HOURS: MON TO SAT 9am – 5pm SUN 9am – 1pm FROM THE 1ST OCTOBER: MON TO FRI 9am – 5pm SAT 9am – 1pm SUNDAY CLOSED Exhibition runs until Saturday 17th November 2012

EVERYONE'S GETTING THE BUG
words | Rick Bromley
EVERYONE’S GETTING
I
t was a wise man that once said “Keep it simple”. Much the same could be said about the humble old Volkswagen Beetle. Regardless of the much publicised claims that the VW Beetle was the brainchild of Hitler, it is now understood that neither Hitler nor Ferdinand Porsche came up with the concept at all. Historians are now uncovering evidence that the concept of the bestselling car of all time was in fact based on ideas and designs by the Jewish engineer, Josef Ganz. It is also claimed that Hitler then had this humble Jewish engineer written out of History. Three years before Hitler described ‘his idea’ to Mr Porsche in a Berlin hotel, Mr Ganz was driving a car he had designed called the Maikaefer, or May Bug. This vehicle bore stunning resemblance to the Volkswagen Beetle of which we have all come to know, and most to love.

Whilst this story and the new claims are indeed very intriguing, I am not here to give you a definitive history lesson on where the Volkswagen Beetle came from, but to fill you in on what people have done with the loveable little car since. The Volkswagen Beetle is loved the world over by millions of enthusiasts, there are a few reasons it has become the bestselling car of all time, most of which are easy to spot. The simple aircooled, flat four engine was built for reliability and longevity. The design of this engine was far ahead of its time. Fast forward 30 odd years and this brings me on to a certain group of young Americans from California during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Sick of all the big American “Muscle Cars” dominating the roads and the race tracks during this period they relished the challenge of transforming this humble little German sedan and turning it in to a dragon slayer
at the drag strip. Considered by many to be the “Godfather” of VW performance tuning, Dean Lowry of Riverside California revolutionised the performance of this little car when he joined forces with Joe Vittone at European Motor Products, Inc (EMPI) in 1963. In 1964 there was a new VW club formed in Orange County, California, that would go by the name of “Der Kleiner Panzers” (translated to English means “The Small Tank”). This club took on the task to build, race and enjoy the souped up little cars. Over time the engineering became more daring and the humble little Beetles of this club were developing larger capacity and ultimately faster engines. One of the highlights of this time was a car owned by Mike Mahaffey. It was a 1951 split window Beetle, which from the outside looked pretty much like a completely bog standard model. But little did the guys in the muscle cars realise was that this goofy looking German car was harboring a 2180cc tuned motor pushing out 198bhp and capable of covering the quarter mile GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

...THE BUG! drag strip in the mid to low 13’s. To those not in the know, that’s modern Ferrari and Porsche territory. Remember this was over 40 years ago! Needless to say as time went on the stories of these dragon slaying VW Beetles became legend and the Muscle car owners soon learnt not to mess with “Der Kleiner Panzers” crew.
featured the white 1963 Beetle built by Greg Aronson and owned by Jim Holmes, both legendary names in the 60’s and 70’s VW scene. From this point on the world was aware of these cars being built in California. This was the start of a long and interesting career for the Beetle as a customised automobile.
By the time the 1970’s arrived “Der Kleiner Panzers” VW club were laying the foundations for what is known the world over by the VW scene as the “California Look”. Put simply the Beetle was stripped of its chrome trim, bumpers replaced by what’s known as T-Bars and the front suspension was lowered to a more meaningful and harder looking stance. Of course you would have to have a nice hot motor hanging out back if you wanted it to be a genuine “California Look”. It took the media a few years to cotton on to the concept of the California Look, but when they did they lapped it up. Most famously was the iconic cover of the February 1975 issue of the publication Hot VW’s. This
Two examples of modern customised VW Beetles are resident right here on Guernsey, and owned by 3 committee members of the local VW club, Guernsey Dub Collective. The 1954 Oval Window Beetle of Rick Ozanne and the 1971 Beetle of Lisa Ruskin and Chris Tielles both are full of subtle and unique twists that demand a closer look to fully appreciate the workmanship and talent that is required to put together cars of this caliber. Both run engines that are far from standard VW design, and echo the hay day of “Der Kleiner Panzer” crew cars way back in the 60’s and 70’s. The enthusiasts like Rick, Lisa and Chris are the kind that keep the VW scene more than alive and certainly create a great future for it. So just remember, next time you pull up to that funny little Beetle at the traffic lights, don’t be fooled in to believing everything is as it seems. THE UKULADEEZ “WE’RE THE UKULADEEZ, THE QUEENS OF THE MUSIC HALL, WE’RE THE UKULADEEZ AND WE HOPE YOU LOVE US ALL” The Ukuladeez are ladies who play ukuleles. There’s Polly on the mic and Jo riding her bike and lady Emily who puts the world to rights. Mimi’s getting steamy because she’s had too much to drink and Fay who loves it all, does not know quite what to think. Ellie’s operatic she really is dramatic, every girl takes their turn they are so democratic. They got together last year (with a slightly amended line up) in a rather disorganised fashion to play Vale Earth Fair. It turned out to be a perfect arrangement to play songs they loved without being too serious about it (how can you take a ukulele seriously? Seriously.).
This summer they’ve been practising, gigging and drinking quite a lot, playing at the Sark Folk Festival, Chaos, Castle Nights, Creaseys (!), Roquaine Regatta, Small Town Blues at the De La Rue and Vale Earth Fair once again. They tend to play country, folk, blues and the odd Disney song but their set is developing all the time and they have started to write their own material. The girls look forward to serenading you with their soothing souls soon and hope you like their new stuff. To quote a crow man, “We are the Ukuladeez and we think you’ll love us all”. THE VINTAGE TREND IS ONE THAT WILL NEVER DIE. IT IS THE MOST EXCITING OF SHOPPING EXPERIENCES, WHETHER DIRECTLY FROM CHARITY SHOPS OR BY COMPANIES WHO HAVE ALREADY FOUND THE BEST OF VINTAGE, RESTORED IT, AND OFTEN MADE IT THAT LITTLE BIT BETTER. THEN AGAIN, YOU COULD ALWAYS DO IT YOURSELF - WHO SAYS YOU NEED SOMEONE ELSE TO GIVE NEW LIFE TO YOUR OLD CLOTHES? THE WONDERFUL THING ABOUT TRUE VINTAGE FASHION IS THAT GUARANTEED THERE WILL BE NO ONE ELSE ROCKING THE SAME DISHEVELLED RUCKSACK OR RIPPED T-SHIRT AS YOU.
BEYOND RETRO
Beyond Retro brings in used, recycled and charitydonated clothing to not only be restored but to give new www.beyondretro.com life. With the knowledge of how much is thrown away every year, Beyond Retro are determined to reduce the amount of waste we continuously create. This rucksack is a gorgeous vintage must-have. With it’s worn tan leather and brass buckles, it is the ultimate accessory for this season. <<< It’s all about the pattern! These colourful stirrup trousers and eyesore of a shirt are the best of vintage - just don’t go wearing them together.
VINTAGE FLORAL OPULENCE
Florals are back again for fall, only this time they've been given a breath of fresh air and come with a tougher edge. Now, they're dark and rich, mixed with velvet and jewels. Accessorise this luxurious look with bold jewellery but keep the hair sleek. Start the trend off with this velvet dress from Miss Selfridge, or these hot pants and wedges, both from River Island.
VINTAGE AMERICANA
ASOS MARKETPLACE
A look to 1950s USA has been an on-going trend this year, where plenty of the everdaring ‘double denim’ has been seen. All you need to do is look to Levi’s Autumn/ Winter lookbook to see how to work the rock trend. If you’re more femininely inclined, then opt for a ‘50s inspired frock like this one from Joy. If you’re more of a rock chick then start by grabbing this denim shirt with plaid shoulder patches from New Look.
www. marketplace.asos.com/women If you’re hunting for a great vintage buy without the often unafforable price tag, Asos Marketplace has thousands of pages to search through. It is a site where people who love fashion sell fashion, all over the world. Indie labels, vintage sellers, and multi-brand boutiques make-up the online store, each with one off pieces ready to buy.

VINTAGE DOES NOT HAVE TO MEAN TRAIPSING THROUGH RAILS AND RAILS IN DOZENS OF CHARITY STORES. NOR CAN IT ONLY BE FOUND IN SHOPS PURELY DEDICATED TO VINTAGE (,WHICH WE SEEM TO BE LACKING ON OUR LITTLE ISLAND). VINTAGE-LOOKING GARMENTS CAN
BE FOUND ALMOST ANYWHERE ON THE HIGH STREET OR ONLINE, HOWEVER, THESE WILL OBVIOUSLY NOT BE 'ONE-OFFS'.
TWEED
Joining plaid this fall is the return of tweed. Traditional tailored jackets worn over a white shirt, coordinated with matching trousers work best for a smarter look. Pairing with jeans is ideal for a more laid back feel. You can find this blazer at Burton on the high street or at www.burton. co.uk. This Polo Ralph Lauren cap is a great accessory this season and can be bought at www.asos.com.
VINTAGE AMERICANA
Re-create the look of the 1950s, maybe by doubling up the denim from New Look or buffing up some Burton Loake brogues. George at Asda's khaki hooded jacket with elbow patches gives off an instant vintage vibe, especially if it's worn with a T-shirt and this pair of braces from Vivienne Westwood.

SUITS YOU SIR
Suits you sir E
ver dreamed of owning a perfect cut suit that makes you stand out from the crowd and will stay with you a life time? Marquis & Farncombe can offer you just that, they are a locally based tailoring company which has been providing bespoke tailoring in Guernsey since 2011. To coincide with the launch of the personal tailoring range Patrick Farncombe came in to Gallery HQ to take us through the process. The personal tailoring range is a made to measure service as individual as the person who commissions it. It offers hundreds of options ensuring that not only do you get a suit that fits but also a one off piece of clothing tailored to your own specifications. “Personalised tailoring is just that – it gives the customers the freedom to choose exactly what they want their suit to look like” says Patrick. A choice of hundreds of fabrics, dozens of linings, different types of pockets and stitching details, together with numerous finishes all add up to a completely unique garment made by individuals for individuals. Although the business is new, Patrick is no stranger to tailoring having learnt his craft in the hallowed grounds of Savile Row, working as a cutter for Royal Tailors, Norton & Sons. “I left Norton’s and came back to Guernsey with my wife in 2000, where I’ve been tailoring for family and friends ever since but it was only last year that we made the decision to formally establish the business and offer fine quality tailoring to a wider market”. So how does it all happen? Firstly make the appointment. Patrick will visit you at home or in the office, day or evening, any day of the week. “A lot of our customers are busy people. We try and work around them as much as possible. It makes life simpler”, Patrick explains.
Second is the serious business of style, in keeping with the Vintage theme Gallery commissioned a suit that draws its inspiration from 60’s London and the mod scene. Peter decided on a close fitted 3 button (buttons covered of course) jacket with a narrow lapel and natural shoulder. The trousers are flat fronted, slim and plain finished on the ankle. Now comes the tricky part, selecting a cloth – not an easy task with hundreds to choose from but relax, Patrick is on hand to guide you through. “A lot of the choice of styling and fabric can be dictated by use. A twenty ounce double breasted three piece might be just the thing for Christmas in Moscow but it’s going to be a bit warm for Monaco. Likewise if you travel a lot you’ll probably want something which doesn’t crease as soon as you look at it”. Peter chose a medium weight mid grey pick and pick, (think Sean Connery in “Dr No.”). The cloth is a classic from the 60’s more commonly known by its American name, Sharkskin. In fact the fabric mill where the cloth comes from has been weaving this pattern since the late 50’s. Pockets are on the slant with a ticket pocket on the outside right. Peter wanted a more fitted chest so Patrick cut down the bulk by dispensing with buttons and tabs on the inside chest pockets, they’re also cut deeper so whatever is in them sits lower and into the waist, making sure the line of the suit isn’t broken (also quite handy for a boarding card). The lining is where a lot of people have some fun. Whether you want acid pink or something to tone with the cloth, the options are vast. Peter went for a grey bemberg to match, with a black piping. The trousers are low on the waist (like jeans) flat fronted and cut narrow to produce a long stylish line. Belt loops or side adjusters? Loops with a hip pocket left and right please! Now that the decisions have been made it’s just a matter of waiting. Six weeks later and the suit is ready for delivery. The verdict? WE LOVE IT!!!! Two piece suit prices start from £550. For further information or to schedule an appointment you can call Marquis & Farncombe on 249046, or visit their website at www.mandftailoring.com

allery’s own Jorja and Jodie took to the charity shops of Guernsey to find some chic vintage and wardrobe gems! We got held up for hours in each thrift store ogling the treasures and ‘umming’ and ‘arring’ about how much stuff going into this feature we would eventually end up buying!! HAVE A FLUTTER
HAVE A FLUTTER BACK IN 1917, CAKE MASCARA WAS THE BIG BEAUTY BREAKTHROUGH AND WIDELY THOUGHT TO BE THE FIRST MODERN DAY EYE MAKE-UP PRODUCT. IT WASN’T UNTIL THE 1960’S THAT THE FIRST ‘AUTOMATIC’ MASCARA WAS LAUNCHED AND SINCE THEN INNOVATIONS HAVE COME THICK AND FAST. GALLERY MAGAZINE ROAD TESTED FIVE MASCARAS… GO ON, HAVE A FLUTTER.
BENEFIT THEY’RE REAL!
WHAT THEY SAY: The UK’s No. 1 best selling mascara. Lengthens, curls, volumises, lifts and separates. Our jet black, long-wearing formula won’t smudge or dry out. ROAD TEST RESULTS: This makes big promises, but I have to say it does live up to the hype. I loved the way the mascara went on with no clogging at all. One coat was fine for day, but it does build up for a more dramatic look. The wand has been designed so you can coat even the smaller lashes and it doesn’t hold too much product, making it easier to apply without clumps. It defined and thickened my rather paltry lashes but I can’t say I noticed the promised ‘base-to-tip curl’. I was impressed by how long-wearing it was, no smudging, even after a run. But the downside is that it’s harder to remove and despite my best efforts I did notice some undereye smudging in the morning. I’ll be using this one again. FLUTTER FACTOR: 8/10 - £18.50 www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk
BOBBI BROWN INTENSIFYING LONG-WEAR MASCARA
ROAD TEST RESULTS: I needed to be a little careful with this one to avoid clumps but I’m impressed that an organic formula can be as good as this. If you’re worried about what goes into your make-up this formula is free of parabens and artificial colours and contains natural mineral pigments, vitamin E, Beeswax and Sunflower Oil to nourish and condition lashes. My only gripe is that the mascara did smudge a little under the eye. Flutter factor: 6/10 - £14.95 www.greenpeople.co.uk
MAYBELLINE GREAT LASH MASCARA
WHAT THEY SAY: Conditions as it thickens. No Clumps, no globs. ROAD TEST RESULTS: This is a real cult beauty product that is good value but I found the formula quite ‘wet’ which makes lashes look a little spidery rather than natural and watch out for smudging on your eye-lid. A comb through definitely helps, but I am not sure the hassle is worth it. Gives lashes definition and thickens but there’s no noticeable lengthening effect.
WHAT THEY SAY: Bobbi Brown’s longest-lasting mascara not only delivers lush, thick lashes but can stand up to elements (and even a few tears) for up to 16 hours.
Flutter factor: 5/10 - £4.50 www.boots.co.uk
ROAD TEST RESULTS: Goes on well and stays put until you’re ready to take it off. I didn’t get any clumping and whilst the formula easily coats all the lashes and thickens well it doesn’t particularly lengthen or curl the lash which is fine for the school run but doesn’t give much impact for evening. Despite the long-lasting formula it’s easy to remove. In my quest to find an every-day mascara that’s natural looking and won’t smudge, Bobbi Brown Long-Wear mascara has become a real favourite.
WHAT THEY SAY: Lash extensions in a tube. The silicone formula coats each lash with a fibrewrap, giving the wearer dramatically longer and completely smudge free flutter.
Flutter factor: 9/10 - £18.00 www.bobbibrown.co.uk
GREEN PEOPLE VOLUMIZING MASCARA
WHAT THEY SAY: With natural and organic ingredients to add volume and length whilst also nourishing and conditioning lashes, from root to tip, promoting fabulously fuller, healthier lashes.
64 VINTAGE.indb 64
DREAMWEAVE
ROAD TEST RESULTS: I was pleasantly surprised by this celebrity favourite mascara, the packaging isn’t up to much, but don’t let that put you off. The formula didn’t clump and did produce longer and beautifully defined lashes. There was no smudging but it was easy to remove. I didn’t see any kind of curl from this formula, but that’s what eyelash curlers are for - Shu Uemura’s eyelash curler is still the best one available. SCENTIMENTAL
BEAUTY BEAUTY
words | Vanessa Mee
T
hese days ‘doing vintage’ can encompass anything from the long anticipated inheritance of a pedigree handbag to finding something gimmicky in a box marked ‘BURN’ round the back of the charity shop bins. We all ‘do’ vintage; because we’re a younger sibling proudly swathed in floppy hand-me-downs, because we’re a green goddess committed to the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ mantra of the modern age, because we worship fashion and recognise a timeless piece when we see it, because we loathe fashion victimisation and cold-shoulder sweat-shop copies, because we are bargain crazed auction site addicts, or maybe it’s just because we hanker after a bygone age of glamour, decadence and expert craftsmanship. Either way, wearing vintage is a thrilling statement and every ensemble needs a decent perfume to complete the look... Or at least mask the whiff of Miss Haversham’s mothy tears. Vintage scents are not for the meek though; championing intoxicating ingredients such as animal anal glands, they were bold, challenging and rather masculine. Original, unopened perfume is rather collectible and may set you back a pretty penny, for example, a pristine bottle of Lancôme ‘Climat’ from 1967 would cost in excess of £1400. (What I would pay to get my hands on just 10 ml of Laura Biogotti’s ‘Venezia’?) Early perfumes were made using much different (and unfortunately unethical) methods and many of the substances such as oakmoss are now banned making way for synthetic materials. However, don’t let this put you off, there are many vintage-style perfumes out there that still capture a certain sepia magic without compromising your conscience or your budget. For those purists amongst you, I recommend these three fine pedigrees ringed in pink...
CHANEL NO19
by CHANEL (1970) is indulgently glamourous without having to shout too loudly. More subtle and interesting than No.5 the eau de toilette is soft yet crispy fresh with top notes of iris and the complex depths of galbanum. This could easily become a signature scent for life. WEAR WITH: A vintage LBD and diamonds. (Creaseys - EDT £41.50 for 50ml)
And for those of you who would prefer something of more recent conception without compromising on classicism, try one of these future masterpieces ringed in grey...
IRIS NOBILE
by ACQUA DI PARMA (2004) is a fail safe gift for any woman who enjoys life’s luxuries (especially the bath gel). It is another clean iris scent evoking those fine qualities of the classics complemented with vanilla and amber. An incredibly warm, summery fragrance it totally encapsulates Italian decadence. WITH A white cheesecloth maxi-dress and WEAR WITH: oversized sunglasses. (John Lewis - EDP £66 for 50ml)
GERANIUM
by MILLER HARRIS (2005) excites me more than any other mainstream perfume has in a long time. At first sniff you will probably doubt it as the geranium is disarmingly heady, give it time though and the rosiness shines through transforming it into something young, sexy, expensive and addictive. WEAR WITH: A battered but buttery biker jacket and denim shorts. (Evie & Me Interiors - £54 for 50ml)
MITSOUKO by GUERLAIN (1919) hits you like an expensive chandelier falling into an opulent ballroom. It is spicy yet creamy and reeks of eccentric elegance. There is definitely something hedonistic about the woody base notes underneath all of that rose and peach. Great for evening wear. WEAR WITH WITH: A bejewelled flapper dress and red lipstick. (Au Caprice - £43.55 for 50ml)
ARPEGE
by LANVIN (1927) is very sophisticated and lady-like and is instantly recognisable as one of the old-school classics. There are sparkling top-notes of bergamot and neroli followed by a floral bouquet of rose, iris, jasmine and lily of the valley which is very feminine. Coriander gives it a twist before the warm depths of patchouli, vetiver, sandalwood and vanilla that give you the overall rich and cosy feel. WEAR WITH: Cashmere, tweed and pearls. (Au Caprice - EDP £42 for 50ml) BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
VINTAGE.indb 65
WHITE MUSK by THE BODY SHOP has to feature in this article somewhere. My friends and I drenched ourselves in it throughout the early nineties and even now the earthy tones stir up a wealth of teenage memories. It has definitely stood the test of time and deconstructing the ingredients (galbanum, jasmine, rose, lily, iris, amber, amber, patchouli, vetiver, peach, oakmoss and vanilla) reveals a startlingly close connection with some of the heavyweights mentioned above. White Musk is a lovely wearable fragrance for every day. WEAR WITH: Velvet, tie-dye, dark lipstick and a choker. (The Body Shop - EDP £12 for 30ml)
The best thing about vintage is feeling different, original and unique; evoking a feeling, mood or personality. So whether it’s for frugality, eco-consciousness or pure unadulterated nostalgia, sniff out what suits you best and make sure it’s you that wears the vintage and not the other way around.

COOKERY MASTERCLASS
A COOKING MASTER CLASS WITH ALEX MACKAY AT THE FARM HOUSE Keiran Wyatt-Nicolle from Gallery Magazine and Laura Clayton news reader at Island Fm went along to The Farmhouse Hotel to experience a cook along with the Master Chef that is Alex Mackay … protégé of Ramond Blanc and former Celebrity Chef on Ready Steady Cook. THE BEGINNING
Alex’s culinary career happened completely by chance after being asked to leave school in New Zealand at the age of 15 for a poor attendance record. His debut in the kitchen was that of dishes technician where he studied the fine art of cleaning dishes for a whole year before being invited to join an apprenticeship. No sooner had Alex’s apprenticeship finished and he was jetting his way on a one way ticket France bound. Alex spent nearly three years working in the kitchens of two starred Michelin restaurants in Burgundy, Tours and Courchevel. Next on Alex’s culinary journey to becoming a master of his trade was a residency with his great friend and mentor, Raymond Blanc. After 6 months he was promoted to Sous Chef. After 1.5 years under the wing of Ramond Blanc Alex left he left to get a little rest in Bermuda, where at the age of 23 he was runner up in Bermuda’s Chef of the Year Awards. It was then that Raymond Blanc called to ask Alex to come back to Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons and run his Cookery School.
FROM PUPIL TO MASTER
In 1999 Alex opened his own culinary school in Le Baou d’Infer, Provence. The school soon earned top accolades as being placed in the world top ten by the Sunday Times and Conde Nast Traveler as well as being voted one of the ‘Worlds Finest’ by House and Garden Travel. The cookery school ran for five years with phenomenal success. Alex’s first and extremely successful book ‘Cooking in Provence’ won the Gourmand World Cookbook award for ‘Best Book on French Cuisine in English’ and was in a short list of 3 for ‘Best First Book’. Our cookery class focused on Alex’s second book ‘Alex Mackay’s Cookbook for Everybody Everyday’. Here he demonstrated to us the ease of creating restaurant quality food using a simple base of ingredients that can be manipulated into multiple dishes. Using core ingredients from ‘The Magic Fridge’ he shows us how to turn a great meal into something truly irresistible within minutes. set alight with flavor using additions added from ‘The Magic Fridge™’. If you are interested in taking part in future events with Alex Mackay at The Farmhouse Hotel, please vivist their website at www.thefarmhouse.gg and sign up for their newsletter to be the first to receive dates and details of Alex’s next visit to Guernsey.
“Alex Mackay is, first and foremost, a brilliant chef. Yet at the same time he is much more than that. He has a rare and special gift which goes beyond simply creating beautiful dishes.” Delia Smith
TAPENADE
Prep/cooking 10–15 mins - Active time 10–15 mins AT LEAST 8 servings Prep ahead Keeps in the fridge for at least 6 months I first tasted tapenade over twenty years ago in Wellington. I was working at an idyllic restaurant called Giverny and my chef Martin Bosley would use it to stuff salmon. I was hooked from the first fingerful on my teenage lips, because tapenade is something that grabs you, that gives you a salty thirst from its oily, black and beautiful depths. I was a long way from Provence, but I already had a taste for her classics. In Provence, tapenade always appears at aperitif time, on croutons, with crudites or with eggs. There are notable exceptions. At Le Grain de Sel in Cogolin, chef Philippe Audibert serves warm roast peppers with tapenade in perfect simplicity, while further along the coast in Monte Carlo, Alain Ducasse spreads tapenade on red mullet, the dish that inspired my sardines. 1. Put all of the ingredients into a blender. Now blend together for as long or as little as you like, depending on whether you prefer a chunky or smooth texture. 2. Spoon the tapenade into jars. Cover the top completely with a thin layer of extra virgin olive oil. Seal the jars with lids. Storage - Use small sterilised jars or clean plastic containers. The key to storage is keeping air away from the tapenade. Tap the bottoms of the jars to ensure there are no air bubbles and leave 1cm at the top of the jar for a good layer of olive oil. Pour the olive oil over the top of the tapenade to seal it. Cover the jars first with cling film, then with a lid. Store in the fridge. If you use some but not all of the tapenade, it’s best to put the rest in a smaller jar. If you don’t have one, clean around the exposed sides of the jar with kitchen paper. Cover the remaining tapenade with a fresh layer of oil. Unopened jars will keep for at least 6 months. Once a jar is opened, it will still keep well in the fridge for several weeks.
• 230–270g black olives, stones removed (about200g stoned weight) • 1 tbsp small salted capers, rinsed • 2 salted anchovy fillets • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 4–6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus extra to cover
“I have watched Alex grow with great pride from a fine chef into a fine teacher and listened with pleasure to the many guests who have enjoyed his free style of teaching. The sadness I feel as he leaves is overwhelmed by the joy of seeing a pupil become a master.” Raymond Blanc

Rib-eye steak with tapenade, red pepper & broad beans
Roast chestnut, squash & kale penne with tapenade
Meaty, sweet, succulent and salty, this combination catches fire when the orange picks up the steak’s caramelised juice in the pan. This beefy juice moistens the tapenade in turn to make it more than just a sauce – it comes closer to the steak, becomes part of the meat. To get the best of this meal, eat a bit of everything in every mouthful. I’m still salivating at the memory of this steak that stunned me into silence.
This penne is rich, gently sweet and receptive to tapenade. I roast the squash and chestnuts, then use some of them to make a puree to flavour, coat and caress the pasta.
Prep/cooking 30 mins - Active time 25–30 mins - Se rve s 2
For younger kids, I find cooking steaks medium rare then resting them to medium is best, because the meat is tender and juicy but not at all bloody. Slice it thinly and against the grain. Chop the zest very finely to mix in with the tapenade, then serve it on the side for them to add if they like. Chop the pepper and onion more finely and peel the skins from the broad beans. Good to puree or chop and freeze for babies and toddlers. 1. Start with the red pepper and onion. Get a medium-sized shallow pan. Add the red pepper, onion, a pinch of salt, 1 tbsp of the extra virgin olive oil and the 3 tbsp of water. Cover and sweat the pepper and onion over a medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until soft. Add the pine nuts. Turn up the heat. Fry for 2 minutes until the vegetables and nuts start to go brown around the edges. Take the pan off the heat. 2. Put this mixture, the orange juice, a resting rack on top of a plate and a bowl for hot fat next to your cooker. 3. Get a medium-large frying pan. Add the vegetable oil and get it really hot. Add the steaks; they should really sizzle, if not take them back out and get the pan hotter. Fry the steaks over a high heat for 2 minutes each side for medium rare; fry over a medium heat for 3 minutes each side for medium or 4 minutes for well done. Put the steaks onto the resting rack to rest while you finish everything else. 4. Drain half the fat into your bowl. Add the orange juice to the pan and boil it until only 2 tbsp remains. Add the beef stock and boil until it reduces by half. Take the pan off the heat. Stir in the remaining 1 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil, the tapenade, orange zest and basil. Season to taste with salt, sugar and cayenne. 5. Add the broad beans to the pepper and pine nut mixture and warm it through. Season to taste. 6. Put the steaks on plates and brush them vigorously with their resting juices. Spread the tapenade mixture over the top of the steaks. Spoon the vegetables alongside.
• 1 medium red pepper, halved, deseeded and cut into 2cm dice • 1 medium red onion, peeled and cut into 2cm dice • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 3 tbsp water • 3 tbsp pine nuts • 2 tsp vegetable oil • 2 rib-eye steaks, about • 200–250g each • Zested or grated zest and juice of 1 orange (120ml) • 100ml beef stock • 2 tbsp tapenade (page 145) • 2 tbsp sliced basil • 300g broad beans, shelled (150g podded weight), boiled and refreshed • Salt, sugar and cayenne pepper

I serve the tapenade and half the ricotta on top because I love the way it looks, then I mixit all together as I eat. You can replace butternut squash with sweet potato or pumpkin, and the kale with spinach. This is an ideal dish for kids as the squash and chestnuts are slightly sweet. For younger kids, slice the kale very thinly and cook it thoroughly. Let them mix in their own tapenade and ricotta. No good to puree, but can be chopped and frozen for toddlers. 1. Preheat your oven to 220°C/Gas 7, position upper middle shelf. 2. Start with the squash. Peel it with a speed peeler. Cut the flesh into 3cm dice. Get a baking tray. Put the squash on it. Spoon on the oil and toss the squash until it is well coated. Season with salt, sugar and cumin. Roast for 20 minutes, turning the squash halfway through. Add the chestnuts. Roast for another 5 minutes or until the squash is soft. Turn the oven off. 3. While the squash roasts, get a medium-sized saucepan. Add the onion, garlic, cumin and 4 tbsp of hot water. Cover and sweat over a medium heat for 5 minutes. Stir in the tomato puree. Pour on the vegetable stock and bring to the boil. 4. Add the penne, bring back to the boil and boil for 1 minute. Cover and turn the heat to low. Simmer for 16 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add more water from the kettle if the penne begins to dry out; it should always be a little soupy. Take the lid off. Simmer and stir for 3 minutes. Taste to see if the penne is cooked. Turn off the heat. Cover and leave to sit for 2 minutes. 5. While the penne simmers, boil your kettle. Get a medium-sized saucepan. Fill it with boiling water from the kettle. Add salt, cover and bring to the boil. Put a colander in your sink. Boil the kale for 3–4 minutes or until tender. Drain in the colander. 6. Take the squash and chestnuts out of the oven. Put one-third of each (using any broken chestnut pieces) into a blender. Add half the ricotta and 4 tbsp of hot water. Blend until it is completely smooth and the consistency of yoghurt. If you need to, add more hot water. 7. Stir the puree into the penne. Fold in the kale, chestnuts and squash. Season to taste. Spoon into bowls or deep plates. Dot with the tapenade and remaining ricotta. Cook extra To use the whole squash, double up the recipe to the point where you add the tapenade and the rest of the ricotta, and freeze half.
• 1/2 large butternut squash (about 500g), use the top half • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 100g cooked and peeled • chestnuts (page 21) • 1 medium onion, peeled and finely diced • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped • 1/2 tsp ground cumin • 8 tbsp hot water • 1 heaped tbsp tomato puree • 500ml vegetable stock • 200g penne • 100g kale • 125g ricotta • 3 tbsp tapenade (page 145) • Salt, sugar and ground cumin

POSH CURRY
SPICED ELEGANCE AT THE OGH
D
o you ponder between going for a curry or heading out for something that bit more swish? Do you love a good curry but worry that your date will not consider you suave enough and a tad unromantic? Panic no longer ... in the epic words of Bob Dylan “The Times They Are a-Changin”... Two of the team from Gallery went along to sample for themselves the new alternative to dinning on curry at the OGH. From the minute we arrived we were treated to a swish 5 * service, the type where they carry your drinks to the table, lay your napkin, nothing is too much trouble, you never have to fill up your glass but don’t feel interrupted and the maitre d says hello for a chat. The Colonial decor works amazingly to compliment the opulence of the service and fine dinning curry experience whilst still creating a relaxed atmosphere. £25 for three courses plus poppadoms and homemade dips, marinated carrot slices were sweet and punchy with the coriander seeds complimenting them. The Mixed tandoori starter was excellent, a spicy lamb chop without chilli heat, a herby king prawn and a tandoori chicken filet all beautifully presented with edible flowers and a tamarind stripe on the long plate. They don’t rush you at all and ask if you want a gap between courses, we went for the option where you get a glass of wine recommended for each dish: 3 in total for an extra £18 was good value considering the quality of the wine. Next we had the fish fillet which was excellent and the buttery pilau rice was the best ever! The second main was to be the butter chicken that was perfectly served medium hot. The desserts were sooo good ... a course that we would never usually eat in a curry house rounded the meal off beautifully. The tamarind sorbet with tiny sugar crunchy bits was a totally new sweet tangy flavour, the mango parfait was smooth and creamy and the coconut jelly squares were fun. A Very good meal! It’s definitely a date night or posh night out .... Great for curry lovers and Totally unique! 8.5/10.

Upon finishing Catering School Ankur joined the Hyatt Regency Hotel where he became part of the first team to work in the newly opened La Piazza Restaurant. After three years as a Commis Chef, Ankur moved to the Hilton California. Catering for banquets of up to fourteen hundred people, Ankur gained valuable experience over the next two years, advancing from Commis Chef to Chef de Partie. Ankur’s travels then brought him to London, working in Millennium and Copthorne Hotels in the city as Senior Chef de Partie, and further widening his experience with both fine dining and conference and banqueting. In 2003, Ankur came to Guernsey to work for a season in the Cobo Bay Hotel as Sous Chef, before moving back to Delhi to work for Intercontinental Hotels, running both their Fine Dining and their Thai Restaurant. After a year, Ankur moved on to Canada to work for the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge. During his time there, he was contacted by the owners of the Cobo Bay Hotel and asked to return to Guernsey to head up the newly refurbished Farmhouse Hotel. During his five years at the Farmhouse, Ankur saw the hotel gain a Four Star rating and an AA Rosette. Ankur joined Red Carnation Hotels in October 2010 as Head Chef for the Old Government House Hotel. He has seen the hotel gain its coveted Five Star rating, and Best Overall Business at the 2010 Guernsey Awards for Achievement, as well as spending some time at The OGH’s sister hotel in South Africa, The Oyster Box.

LASKA COCKTAIL MASTERCLASS
As a bit of fun, or as the start of a career as a budding mixologist, a cocktail masterclass at Laska is a great way to spend a night, whether there are 5 or 50 of you.
COCKTAIL M AST E R C L ASS
GALLERY TEAMED UP WITH LASKA AND INVITED SOME SPECIAL GUESTS TO THE COCKTAIL BAR TO SAMPLE THE LATEST IN EXCITING OFFERINGS “A COCKTAIL MASTER CLASS”. Gallery were excitied to discover the new offering over at Laska’s, so much so that we were straight on the phone to our friends to organise our own education in the mystic art of making our favourite weekend tipples. They say that there is no better way to learn than by having fun and this experience certainly did just that. Using the finest ingredients available, the informative and fun Bar Tenders of Laska talked us through the history behind every cocktail that we chose to make. This was followed by a demonstration and a tasting of how the cocktail is made and should taste. Once briefed, it was time to get behind the bar and and shake our stuff under the continued guidence of our personal expert bar tender. The results were stunning and we were all soon enjoying the fruits of our labour before moving onto the next cocktail on our chosen list.

CASK ALE WEEK 2012
ONLY IN BRITAIN ONLY IN PUBS CASK ALE WEEK 2012 {28th September - 7th October} IT’S ALWAYS NICE TO BE OFFERED A BEER. IF IT’S THE BREWERY DOING IT, ALL THE BETTER. THAT’S WHAT YOU CAN EXPERIENCE LATER THIS MONTH AS PART OF CASK ALE WEEK. THIS YEAR’S EVENT WILL BE FOLLOWING THE ‘TRY BEFORE YOU BUY’ THEME. WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE EH? IT HAS A NEW STRAPLINE TOO – ONLY IN BRITAIN, ONLY IN PUBS! BY BRITAIN THEY MEAN GUERNSEY TOO, CLEARLY. The Liberation Pubs and Bucktrouts are getting on board in a big way. Not only are they embracing the ‘Try Before you Buy’ ethos in their pubs during Cask Ale Week, but they’ve planned a whole host of culinary delights, special events and promotional offers in their pubs and eateries to make it all the more cause for celebration. In the words of Paul Nunny, Director of Cask Marque, which is steering this year’s event, ‘Cask Ale Week is dedicated to raising the profile of cask conditioned beer, getting people to sample local brews, plugging that gap in knowledge and enticing drinkers back through the doors of their locals.’ The
“
theme and the strap line Only in Britain, Only in Pubs are aimed to do just that, with the initiative supported by the lovely people at both CAMRA and the IFBB (Independent Family Brewers of Britain). Where does one go to bask in the glory of Cask Ale Week? Think ‘Liberation’ – You can sample this lovely local brew in selected Liberation pubs across the Island, Deerhound, Houmet, Albion, White Hart and Thomas de la Rue. Or, if you fancy something a little ‘further afield’- the brewery is preparing a brew of IPA especially for Cask Ale Week (back by popular demand). For those of you who aren’t well acquainted with the lovely IPA (India Pale Ale), this was originally brewed for the UK ale lovers and featured at last year’s Jersey Beer Festival (amongst others) proving extremely popular with the locals alike. Head Brewer Paul Hurley has been inundated with requests for this brew on his charity tours of Liberation
Brewery, so it’s back by popular demand at Deerhound, Houmet, Albion and White Hart. People can also get Liberation Ale battered Fish ‘n’ Chips, we have added a Liberation Ale logo to the menu to promote awareness of cooking with beer at many of our pubs, bars and eateries in the Channel islands A Ladies guide to Ale and Brewery brochures will be available in the pubs and at Bucktrouts in Guernsey so that people can learn about beautiful beer. People can visit www.liberationgroup.com for more info.
Pork Pie & Pint of Liberation Ale Only £4.95, Friday 28th September - 7th October inclusive
IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN THE FUTURE OF LOCAL COMMUNITIES, YOU SHOULD BE INTERESTED IN THE FUTURE OF PUBS, AND IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN THE FUTURE OF PUBS, YOU SHOULD BE INTERESTED IN THE FUTURE OF BEER: MAKING YOU LOOK AT CASK ALE.

GALLERY TOOK A SNEAK PREVIEW OF ALEX AND ARABELLA FULLER’S HOUSE, STYLISHLY INTERIOR DESIGNED BY THEM AND DECORATED WITH VARIOUS BONSAI SUPPLIED PRODUCTS INCLUDING ANNIE SLOAN PAINTS. WE CAUGHT UP WITH ANNIE SLOAN TO FIND OUT A BIT MORE ABOUT THIS GLORIOUS RANGE OF PRODUCTS! Can you tell us a bit about your paints, did you set out to create a paint that does exactly what chalk paint does or was it a happy accident? The paint was started with the idea that it would be somewhere between the feel of an artist’s casein paint which came in small jars and was soft and pliable but very expensive with the ease of household paints coupled with good colours. I wanted to be able to use it to do washes and to use it thickly and I wanted it to be able to absorb wax or lacquer. I’ve been using it now for over 20 years and I regularly find new qualities, it has exceeded all expectations! Your products are well suited to vintage application; do you think this is why they are so popular? I think this is one of the reasons because vintage decoration is really popular, but the great thing about my paints and colours is that they can be used in so many different design styles. Vintage can be shabby chic florals, distressed French chateau style, washed out Swedish, 1950’s rock’n’roll, urban warehouse or even Hollywood regency. People can discover their own creativity with my paint. I offer a lot of help with colour on my blog, web site and I love all the social media, so I am on Facebook daily responding to people’s posts. My paint ticks all the boxes, of course financially too, and there’s the thrill of the chase of looking for old furniture in skips, boot sales, auctions, and junk shops. What drives your interest in design? Initially it’s my desire to have interesting, beautiful and challenging things to look at in my home. This is extended to others and I am inspired

by new ways of looking at the world and seeing the world. Good design does not have to cost a lot. Developing an eye for decoration is free and so easy these days with the internet. How would you describe your style? From Boho Chic to Modern and Chateau grandeur are the areas I feel very comfortable with. What is the strangest enquiry you have been asked for regarding your paint? Someone asked me once at a book signing if he could paint his skateboard with it. Mmm. You also run workshops, which Bonsai is hoping to host in the near future, how have these worked for you and what is the general reception? People love the workshops! From the moment you tell them there is no sanding or priming to showing them the colour book then starting to do the samples. They love it and always go away inspired. Many of my stockists also run colour workshops, ‘Bring a chair” workshops, (where they upholster a drop in seat properly and paint the chair), paint metal lamps and make a lampshade using our fabrics of course. What are your plans for the future? I’m really excited about the Workbook coming out in November which is a spiral bound sketch book with some pockets in it for fabric swatches and scraps, and lots of little hints in it for people about my paint and about colour. I hope people will work on it with my paints and then share the images on Pinterest. I am also doing another book and there are lots of product plans but I can’t tell you about them yet! What advice would you have for people who are also trying to follow their dream and launch a new product? Go for it of course!! GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

EARTHBOEN PAINT
EARTHBORN PAINT
BETTER FOR YOU, YOUR HOME AND OUR PLANET Earthborn paints are kinder by design… kinder to the environment and kinder to your health.
People are very environment conscious these days, always thinking about recycling, reducing their carbon footprint and making the world a greener place. However, now it seems people are turning their attention to home interiors and beginning to think more about what they put on their walls and the effect this may have on the environment. Earthborn paints not only reduce the impact on the environment, but they also alleviate asthma and allergic reactions that people may have had from traditional paints. Many people are also unaware that most modern chemical paints continue to give off potentially harmful gases years after application.
Earthborn paints are kinder by design…kinder to the environment and to your health Earthborn paints are high performance, designer paints equally suitable for DIY or commercial projects. They utilize advanced
formulations and are modern paints with a traditional feel, ensuring that they are manufactured in accordance with their strict ecological principles. Earthborn is the UK’s leading brand of eco paint and is licensed to carry the EU Ecolablem, they were the first paint brand to be awarded an EU Ecolabel flower by the Department for the Environment.
Celebrity Fans
Earthborn paints have been championed by leading eco names such as TV's Oliver Heath and more recently they have been the paint choice of Hugh Fernley Whittingstall. The latest request has come from nature presenter Kate Humble for her new Humble by Nature farm project. The brand was also recently selected by interior designer Russell Sage for the BBC Avebury Manor refurbishment project and featured in the program heavily - make sure you catch up on this on iPlayer now!!
The Earthborn product range
Whether you are looking for green paint, breathable paint, healthy paint, environmentally friendly paint, eco paint or natural paint without compromising the high performance you expect from a paint or varnish product, or an alternative to limewash, lime paint or distemper, then Earthborn has a product for you.
Interior Wall Paint
Earthborn supplies a variety of paints suitable for interior walls and ceilings. Our Claypaint and Emulsion have differing textures and appearance. In most cases, selection is a question of personal preference rather than performance.
Wood finishes
Wood Stain is not designed for use on floorboards or kitchen surfaces. There are two types of Wood Stain, one for interior use and one for exterior use. Wood Stain is ideal for exteriors, providing a breathable, water
repellent, UV resistant surface. Eggshell can be used on external wood surfaces
Exterior wall paint
Earthborn Ecopro Silicate Masonry Paint is probably the most durable paint available for exterior masonry. It makes a chemical bond with the mineral surface. We know of examples of buildings painted in silicate paint more than 80 years ago, which are still in excellent condition. As with all paints, proper preparation is essential.
Other products
Our Casein Filler has excellent adhesive qualities and is the ideal product to use internally or externally, before applying Earthborn paints. Earthborn is available from one of Guernsey’s leading interior design shops, Bonsai.
Bonsai now stock the exciting Earthborn paints range. Better for you, your home and our planet. www.earthbornpaints.co.uk

A VINTAGE AFFAIR
A VINTAGE words | Kate Lister
H
ave you ever looked at an old or battered object, and wondered if you could make it into something else? This is exactly what Katie Le Tissier does. Katie launched VintageFayre.co.uk, an online shop selling vintage and up-cycled furniture, art and fashion, in April 2011 as a hobby, but has now developed quite a following and regularly gets local commissions. Katie, a 24 year old design graduate who works in the Creative department at Specsavers, is a fan of restoring and re-purposing pre-loved items. “For me it is about using quality materials that have a history and making them into something original and individual.” Upcycling has become trendy since the recession has made it mainstream but people have been upcycling for centuries – reusing stones from old buildings to build new ones, for example - but what exactly does upcycling mean? The first recorded use of the term upcycling was in 1994 by Reiner Pilz of Pilz GmbH during an interview. “Recycling” said Pilz, “I call it downcycling. They smash bricks, they smash everything. What we need is upcycling where old products are given more value not less.” At very basic level this means that upcycling is reusing something in a new way without degrading the material it is made from, as opposed to recycling which involves breaking down the original item and making it into something else, using more energy. While this might sound very dull and (possibly) worthy, the process of upcycling something can be a voyage of discovery. Isabel Wolff perhaps said it best in her novel, A Vintage Affair “What I really love about them... is the fact that they contain someone’s personal history...I find myself wondering about their lives. I can never look at a garment... without thinking about the woman who owned it. How old was she? Did she work? Was she married? Was she happy?... I look at these exquisite shoes, and I imagine the woman who owned them rising out of them or kissing someone...I look at a little hat like this, I lift up the veil, and I try to imagine the face beneath it... When you buy a piece of vintage clothing you’re not just buying the fabric and thread - you’re buying a piece of someone’s past.” When I spoke to Katie she too referred to the history of the objects she restores and the fact that she is giving something a new life. “It is all about the quality of the object, the thought that goes into it, the individuality, giving someone a piece that has a story, a story that is continuing…” Katie, like many others who upcycle, understands the quandary that people have. They have little money, so buy furniture cheaply, but, unfortunately cheap items don’t have the same quality – nor are they as environmentally friendly - and so are often later thrown away because they have fallen apart or degraded in some way.

Upcycled and vintage items may seem expensive at first, but you are buying investment pieces that you can continue to keep and reimagine for years to come! While one of her more recent projects was a fairly traditional piece of upcycling – an old chair which she found in a local charity shop for £5, which she painted white and reupholstered with vintage material - Katie also thinks beyond the original purpose of the objects and gets creative. Some of my favourite pieces of upcycling of Katie’s are her light bulb vases and tea cup candles. Katie may be a design graduate, but you don’t necessarily have to be artistically gifted to upcycle something yourself. Guernsey has many hidden gems where you can find pieces that have been discarded in favour of something else. Charity shops, auction rooms and the local press are good places to start but sometimes you don’t have to look any further than what you have in your own house, shed or back garden. For example, an old scarf that might be headed for the charity shop itself could be reimagined as a cushion or an old tin bath that is gathering dust in the shed could become a planter for the garden. However, if you don’t want to do it yourself you can, of course buy something from someone who has done the hard work for you! Following on from the last issue of Gallery magazine, Action, I too support and champion local businesses and applaud the campaign currently being promoted by “The Best Of Guernsey” which is encouraging you to get vocal about local and “ Buy local”. As a result if your interest is piqued, I suggest that you get in touch with Katie, visit the local charity shops and auction houses and go vintiquing! (Apologies, it is a horrible Americanism, and slightly offends my writer’s conscience but apparently it is a new thing in America and I had to shoe-horn it in somewhere!!!). However, as a digital fanatic I feel that I also have to champion the online market too! The marketplace for buying upcycled and vintage items online has grown massively. For example the number of products tagged with the word “upcycled” on Etsy.com - an e-commerce site focused on selling handmade or vintage items from independent sellers rather than larger companies - reportedly increased from almost 7,900 items at the beginning of 2010 to nearly 30,000 the following year - an increase of 275% - and 9 months later 167,000 items a further increase of 450%! Etsy is a great place to browse - it is a veritable Aladdin’s Cave – and you can be assured that the items are vintage because the site stipulates that all items must be at least 20 years old – so take a peek and you might find that perfect piece that brings everything together! Another site that is worth a look is upcycled. co.uk. Here artists, designers, shops and students submit their upcycled products so anyone visit can see what they have available. It is largely oriented to people who have a Facebook account, and can be slightly hit and miss, but if you delve deeper there are some gems to be found. So get out there! Rummage in your sheds and cupboards and get creative or contact one of the many budding entrepreneurs, like Katie, who are quietly making the world more green by upcyling your old vintage furniture! GUERNSEY ENTREPRENEURS ON THE SOFA
ANDY, NICK, GARY SARNIA POOLS
So tell us, what inspired you to start Sarnia Pools? Andy & Gary: After running two other successful businesses we were chomping at the bit to try something new and completely different. We also recognised a gap in the market for bringing a unique and greener alternative to traditional methods of swimming pool construction and renovation. What did you do prior to starting Sarnia Pools? Andy & Gary: We ran and continue to run Sarnian Roofing Ltd and Edge Protection Systems. Nick: I was a swimming pool technician. Have your other roles taught you any lessons that helped you to succeed? Andy: Make sure that you know your market. I’ve also learnt that if I get a feel about something that I should follow my instincts and go for it. Gary: Yes plenty, but mainly to always be honest with everyone. Nick: Good client relations are paramount and to keep prices competitive. What’s the most important thing you’ve learnt since starting Sarnia Pools? Andy: To work hard and to not become complacent. Gary: Again, be honest, work hard and make sure you’re always on top of things. Nick: Not to think that you can do it all by yourself; it is important to ask the right people for advice and assistance when it’s needed. Do you have any funny stories from your business experiences that you can share with us? Andy: Yes, with Sarnian Roofing, we sent one of our operatives to a site but he managed to hold the plans the wrong way around which resulting in him stripping off the wrong roof – the neighbour’s roof! And we didn’t even get paid for it! Gary: Yes, but there are too many to list – when I retire I will write a book on all the daft things I have seen! What are your plans for the future? Andy: To have another successful business after establishing Sarnia Pools… if I get any time left in the day.
84 VINTAGE.indb 84
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs? Andy: To work hard and, given these turbulent times, ensure you have the knowledge and experience that will enable you to be successful in whatever you pursue. Gary: Be strong minded and if you have a good idea then go for it. Nick: Do your research, keep good records and have faith in yourself. ABOUT THE BUSINESS Set up: Sarnia Pools was set up in April 2012. Company ethos: We treat everyone the way we would like to be treated. ANDY Born: School: First Job: Car: Book: Music:

90% SAY STATES OWNERSHIP OF AURIGNY MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER
GUERNSEY SALON FINALIST FOR SALON OF THE YEAR 2 AWARD
NINETY PER CENT OF PEOPLE POLLED IN A RECENT SURVEY BELIEVE THAT THE STATES OWNERSHIP OF AURIGNY IS IMPORTANT AND SHOULD CONTINUE – THAT’S UP FROM 58% IN 2004.
ST PETER PORT’S SUCCESSFUL HAIRDRESSING SALON IS ONE OF ONLY SEVEN FINALISTS IN THE 2012 BRITISH HAIRDRESSING BUSINESS AWARDS, SALON OF THE YEAR 2 CATEGORY, SPONSORED BY CLYNOL SALON EXCLUSIVE.
The fifth, independently researched survey, undertaken biennially since 2004, features a range of questions about the airline and its main competitors – Flybe and Blue Islands (the latter having been included in the survey since 2010). “Regularly undertaking these surveys has generated very valuable trend data over the last eight years, which continues to show positive findings for our airline,” said Malcolm Hart, managing director of Aurigny. “This year we were delighted to see that the vast majority of islanders view States ownership as a real positive for the island, particularly to ensure security of lifeline air links with London Gatwick. In 2012, 90% considered it ‘very important’ or ‘important’ for the States to retain ownership, this compares with 83% in 2010 and 80% in 2008 and 58% in 2004.” The survey, conducted by Island Analysis, also looked at islanders’ perception of other areas including: ticket price, punctuality, in-flight service, check-in facility, website userfriendliness, online check-in, ticket change costs and overall value for money. In each of these areas Aurigny ranked higher than both of its competitors or on a par with one of their competitors where applicable. “The difficulties facing the airline industry in the current economic climate have been well-documented, which is why I’m particularly proud of my staff across the islands for this latest set of positive results,” said Mr Hart. One of the key areas of improvement was the airline’s punctuality record with 72% rating Aurigny’s punctuality as ‘good’ or ‘very good’ as compared to 64% in 2010, 57% in 2008 and 45% in 2004. “We are particularly pleased that our punctuality stats have improved. As an airline we work hard to offer an efficient service for our passengers but also have a policy of ensuring we don’t cancel flights unless absolutely necessary. This means we can get people home even if it means some of our flights have been delayed due to bad weather etc,” added Mr Hart. The next survey will be undertaken in 2014 BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

Mr Le Bargy is grateful to all the staff who have contributed to the success of the business. “That so many staff opt to stay with us more than a decade is a testament to the way that we do business. We strongly believe that our staff are our greatest resource so we are committed to supporting them, especially through specialist training,” he said. Mr Francis is still enjoying the job after 30 years. “I’ve come a long way since I started in the cleaning department. It has been fascinating to work in so many areas of the business, growing my knowledge and expertise,” he said.

IT IS NOW JUST OVER FIVE YEARS SINCE THE CREDIT CRISIS BEGAN AND INVESTORS ARE STILL CONCERNED WITH A RETURN OF THEIR CAPITAL FAR MORE THAN A RETURN ON THEIR CAPITAL. DESPITE THE LOW INTEREST RATES, YOU CAN’T JUST KEEP YOUR MONEY IN THE BANK EARNING NOTHING AS IT WILL BE QUICKLY ERODED BY INFLATION. The Euro crisis has gone quiet for now but may be reignited given the lack of any detailed substance to the latest round of rescue package talks where the ECB President vowed to do ‘whatever it takes’ to save the Euro. Monetary union has held together thus far but moves toward closer fiscal integration have been very slow. The Bank of England is debating whether we need another rate reduction or more Quantitative easing, even though the current programme will not complete its asset purchases until November. Bonds and Equity markets never perform similarly, as seen recently, for more than fairly short periods of time, however. The bond markets are currently suggesting that the stimulus will not come until next year, perhaps when the ‘fiscal cliff’ of tax increases and spending reductions loom large in the US. Had investors ‘sold in May and gone away’ this year, they would have missed out on the solid rally in equities over the summer months. The markets have rallied because they think that central banks will effectively flush the system with more money at some point. That said, the aforementioned fiscal cliff and eurozone crisis could easily cool this recent run in stockmarket returns and it may be prudent to take profits or add some insurance to portfolios. Volatility is at its lowest since before the credit crisis began which suggests optimism for markets, but could this be the calm before the storm? While it may only be a passing shower, it may dilute gains made over July and August. Last month’s column suggested that Germany will encounter higher levels of debt and a deteriorating economy. As Europe returns from its August holiday, Germany will find itself verging on the edge of recession, which, no doubt, it will be able to handle. The more significant issues will be for its neighbours who will be exporting fewer goods to German consumers and further contraction will ensue in France and Italy, particularly. Without a solution, this will pull Germany down further and could mark the start of the break-up of the eurozone. Threats and opportunities will abound.

AIRTEL-VODAFONE STOPS ROAMING CHARGES FROM WRECKING HOLIDAYS AIRTEL-VODAFONE HAS FORMED A NEW BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP THAT WILL END ‘BILL SHOCK’ FOR PEOPLE USING THEIR PHONE – PARTICULARLY TO DOWNLOAD DATA – WHEN THEY TRAVEL OUTSIDE THE CHANNEL ISLANDS. The deal with global Wi-Fi services provider Boingo gives users access to more than 500,000 Wi-Fi hotspots around the world at a fixed monthly price and number of minutes with uncapped data download. Connecting to the internet in this way rather than roaming on foreign 3G networks, gives users access to faster speeds and, importantly, no nasty bill surprises.
It’s about... being sociabl e
Ian Campbell, vice-president of Airtel-Vodafone, said, “This year, Britons will pay out an estimated £1.36 billion when they take their phones abroad. In most cases, these charges will unfortunately come as a complete surprise. I’m delighted that Airtel-Vodafone has been able to negotiate access to Boingo’s worldwide network and offer our customers a way of avoiding bill shock, which can easily run into hundreds of pounds. Boingo has more than half a million Wi-Fi hotspots around the world and Islanders may already be familiar with their locations in UK airports, hotels, restaurants, stadiums and coffee shops,” said Mr Campbell. Under the terms of the arrangement, Airtel-Vodafone customers pay a fixed price of £34 per month to access the Boingo network through up to four mobile devices, such as a laptop, smartphone, tablet, games console, camera or MP3 player. As part of the package, they will also gain access to the BT Wi-Fi network, formerly known as BTOpenworld. “If customers take up the deal and use Skype or a VoIP handset then they won’t even have to worry about call charges when traveling,” said Mr Campbell.
NEW LOOK AND NEW SPONSOR FOR ANTI DRINK DRIVE CAMPAIGN THE 2012 ANTI DRINK DRIVE CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN LAUNCHED WITH A NEW LOOK AND A NEW SPONSOR. THE JOINT INITIATIVE BETWEEN GUERNSEY POLICE AND THE DRUG AND ALCOHOL STRATEGY WILL BE SPONSORED BY LAGAN CONSTRUCTION, THE MAIN CONTRACTOR ON GUERNSEY AIRPORT. “The anti drink drive campaign is an important part of the island’s overall approach to improving road safety. Lagan has an excellent reputation for its policy on the health and safety of not only its drivers but also all other road users and so they make an ideal sponsorship partner,” said John Tostevin, Guernsey Police traffic sergeant.
It’s antisocial, criminal and irresponsible. Drink driving, it’s a crime Campaign kindly sponsored by:
Encouraging responsible road use
In association with:
“It’s those people who often just have “one more” because they live “just down the road” but it doesn’t matter how far you have to travel, if you are over the limit and get into your car then the risk of injuring yourself or others are still there. With the Bank Holiday approaching, this is an ideal time to remind people of the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol.” Edwin Ryan from Lagan Construction Group said the 2012 anti drink drive campaign was an ideal one for the company to support. “We invest significant time and budget into ensuring all of our drivers receive the highest level of training. We worked very closely with Guernsey Police before we started the Guernsey Airport project and continue to liaise with them on a regular basis. We want to do all we can to improve the safety of road users and so we were more than happy to support Guernsey Police and the Drug & Alcohol Strategy and sponsor this extremely important campaign.”
ACQUISITION OF CABLE & WIRELESS WORLDWIDE IS GOOD NEWS FOR CI CUSTOMERS
“The whole campaign has been given a new look by Hamilton Brooke who have given their creative time for free and we want to thank all of our other partners who have provided us with locations in which we can promote the 2012 anti drink drive campaign. By everyone working together, we can remind people that drink driving has serious consequences, make them rethink their decision to drive and in turn keep all road users safe.”
AIRTEL-VODAFONE VICE-PRESIDENT IAN CAMPBELL WELCOMES VODAFONE’S ACQUISITION OF TELECOMS GROUP CABLE & WIRELESS WORLDWIDE (CWW). THE DEAL WAS WORTH JUST OVER £1 BILLION AND TOOK EFFECT ON THE 30TH JULY.
The new campaign focuses on the consequences of drink driving including the level of fines and length of a driving ban. It will appear on the back of police vans and some island buses and be on posters and coasters in pubs, bars, restaurants and nightclubs around Guernsey.
Mr Campbell said, “The acquisition of Cable & Wireless Worldwide is a good move for Vodafone. It comes at a time when there’s an increasing need for the mobile industry to own the infrastructure that links countries and continents together. The deal can also reasonably be expected to bring benefits to AirtelVodafone’s customers in the Channel Islands – possibly quite rapidly – since the bigger, global entity will be able to offer lower prices with regards international voice and data roaming.”
“The campaign focuses on the “average” drink driver,” said Andrea Nightingale, the Drug and Alcohol Strategy co-ordinator.

FRENCH PALET
FRENCH PALETWITH KEN LAINÉ words | Shambles Rambles
PALET IS A TRADITIONAL FRENCH GAME, MECHANICALLY VERY SIMILAR TO THE WELL-KNOWN BOULES, BUT REQUIRING SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER DEXTERITY TO PLAY WELL. CAST IRON, SLIGHTLY CONVEX DISKS ARE THROWN ONTO A SOFT WOODEN BOARD CALLED LA PLANCHE FROM A DISTANCE OF 5 METRES. PLAYERS ATTEMPT TO THROW THEIR PALETS CLOSEST TO THE MASTER PALET ALSO KNOWN AS THE JACK. EACH PALET A PLAYER LANDS NEARER TO THE JACK THAN THEIR OPPONENT’S PALETS COUNTS ONE POINT. FIRST PLAYER TO REACH 12 POINTS WINS THE GAME. THE MORE YOU PLAY PALET, THE MORE THE BOARD CUTS UP WITH DENTS AND DIVOTS. It’s hardly something that would be in the top 100 things you want to know but I will tell you anyway. This year’s individual championships are on 27 October 2012 in Jallais, France with Régis Redureau the individual Brass Champion in 2010 defending his title again in 2012. He also won in 2008 so it sounds like he can throw a mean Palet! In the Coupe De France Palet Championships last year over 800 people took part in the doubles competition, which is almost as many adults that play cricket in Guernsey. Thousands of Frenchmen have stood facing La Planche in the past and now it’s my turn. Happily for the Palets novice, tradition among the players of this convivial game is that the winners buy drinks for the losers! Now this is a first for me as I hate losing but if you do there are benefits to be had! I had to apologise to Ken as I put super glue on his Palet. He went on and on about it and wouldn’t let it go! Enough of the rubbish jokes, it’s time for the challenge, first to 12 and may the best man win. Ken threw first and quickly raced into an 11-0 lead before I had time to blink. I steadied myself and pulled back a point before he settled the match winning 12-1. I was standing there playing Palet wondering why the closer the Puck gets the bigger it seems and then it hit me....It’s not an easy game to play but it was obvious Ken had played a fair bit and his skills were way better than mine. It was time to drink some French Cidre and chat about remote controls and Palet. Why do people press harder on the remote control button when they know the battery is dead? I will pass on that one! I suppose that the number one question has to be how, when and why did you get into Palet? The when was about twenty years ago in Guernsey and the why was the challenge to try and master the game. The how was an afternoon BBQ at Len Dorey’s house and a guy called Rob Waterman turned up with a Board and some Palets. The rest is history. Apparently I noticed on the Internet that the French game of Petanque has had an alcohol ban lifted during World Competition Play by the World Anti-Doping Agency. How does this relate to Palet or shall I put this can of Cidre away? There is always lots of food available at the games alongside a well stocked bar. It is a very social game. A friend of mine is half man and half horse, he is always the centaur of attention. Which player is the centre of attention and what separates them from the rest?
92 VINTAGE.indb 92
The best player is usually the guy who drinks water! And that’s no joke because as the day goes on and the wine flows it becomes more difficult. Plating Palets is like playing most games, you improve with experience, you would have to practice pretty hard to play in a tournament in France as they wouldn’t put up with novices. How many players play the game locally? At the moment there are not many of us left, there were over twenty playing about ten years ago. Do you attend any competitions in France? Apparently all you have to do is pay a registration fee and several hours later could walk away the champion! What you say is right, I often play over in the village championships in France and you turn up on the day, pay your entry fee and away you go. I usually get into the prize money and the winner can get anything upward of 30 euro’s. Do you think that Palet could become a televised sport like Darts? Don’t see why not In the old days, who was the David Beckham of the Guernsey Palet world? You know – snappy dresser, the cars, the girls, the holidays etc? Rob Waterman introduced the game but I can’t link him with any of the above! There is pressure in every competitive environment. Describe the how you cope with pressure during a game? There is always pressure as in any sport but I don’t get upset with myself if I lose. 90% of the game is in your head not in the skill, which again is the same as all sport. Chad Ochocinco, the American Footballer, changed his name to Chad Javon Johnson. If you had to change your name for Palet what would it be? Ken Red – As in red wine This is your question from last month’s interviewee Kart Driver, Kasey Watson. If you could throw your metal disc at anyone who would it be? The barman when he calls, “Time gentleman please”. And a question for next month please, it’s going to be a Boxer. Have you ever got into the ring with someone you really didn’t want to get into the ring with? What a great game Palet is and it is much more difficult than it looks. The next time you are in France, visit the centre of town as they are bound to be playing somewhere and check it out.

POCKET ROCQUETTE
POCKET POCKET ROCQUETTE ROCQUETTE GALLERY HAD A CHAT WITH JEZ MANN ABOUT HIS CRAZY OBSESSION OF RACING VINTAGE SCOOTERS UP A HILL.
A
few friends were talking about making something to race over a few beers and I remembered I had the bones of a scooter in the back of a shed from years before. A group of us spent the winter on it, which became Team Jezspeed (Peter, Nick, Tim and I), Peter then introduced James from Rocquette Cider and it seemed to fit. It really was designed in the pub and built in a shed. Much of it has been handmade one off, including engine and frame parts and it has evolved constantly, and is built to a particular specification of racing scooter class. The scooter itself, is (or was) a Lambretta GP150 which was designed and produced in the 1960s and pretty much unchanged until the 1990s, this one was produced in the 70’s and would have had a power output of around 6bhp and a top speed of almost 50 mph. Its now 250cc and weighs around 135 lbs, delivering around 30bhp through 4 widely spread gears. It continues to evolve with most of the effort spent trying to retain reliability. The Val des Terres Hill Climb Guernsey Its one of the oldest forms of motorsport, basically a time trial against the clock over a set course and sets a challenge for both rider and machine, the winner being the fastest time. Over time the machine can be enhanced and the rider skill developed, whilst the course remains the same. The Val des Terres is one of several channel island courses and one of two on Guernsey. It has been used for competition since 1946 and is a venue for the British Hillclimb Championship, and was originally a longer course but shortened in 1971. How long have you been racing on vintage lambretta scooters? I first started sprinting at Santa Pod in 1990, and locally in 1992. I won national scooter “Run-wot-yer-brung” in 1993 and 2001. Why would you want to go up the hill at XX miles an hour on a scooter that was originally designed in the 40’s for ladies to sit side saddle and pootle down to the shops on? Its home built and goes much faster than it was ever intended so pound for pound considerably more fun, and what’s more its different. I’d much rather that than try not to scratch an expensive superbike that is difficult to get near its limit. Outside Guernsey its a lot more popular than you would think. When you won the class record your time was quicker than riders of Yamaha RDs and R6 motorbikes. What do you think these riders thought of you? The comparison is a little unfair as they are different classes although its still a thin veil, but I’m sure the celebratory Rocquette Cider helped! My best is 41.38 which if in 1971 when the scooter was current would have been the faster than any of the motorcycles that year.

WHAT’S UP?
WHAT’S UP?
words | Gary Hooks
I SPOKE EXTENSIVELY ABOUT THE BENEFITS AND NECESSITY FOR NUTRITION AND RECOVERY LAST MONTH, THE PROS AND CONS SURROUNDING MEAL FREQUENCY FOR OPTIMAL RECOVERY. THESE PAST FEW WEEKS I HAVE BEEN EMAILING PEOPLE GIVING THEM AN INSIGHT ON REDUCING BODY FAT RAPIDLY. THE OVERWHELMING DEMAND FOR THIS INFORMATION CONVINCED ME TO INCLUDE IT IN THIS MONTH’S “GALLERY”.
O
K before we get rolling lets address the numero uno mistake which most people make when it comes to “cardio” training! You are convinced you are going to burn body fat? You are – slowly. Everyday I see people making valiant efforts doing all types of “steady state cardio” with a heck of a lot of regularity and physically never changing month on month! Reason? Like every other form of exercise, the stimulus needs to be changed, in this case the “intensity”. Always do what you’ve always done and you are going to get what you always got. The monotony of “SSC” ensures one thing: You are making a bee-line for a place I often refer to as nowhere fast! To respond and adapt, you must offer your body a different stimulus and get the hell out of your “comfort zone”. Also know you will burn calories for the duration of the exercise being performed unlike High Intensity Interval Training (“HIIT”) which fires up your metabolism furnace for hours after you finish training. Great news for someone attempting to ditch the bulge when Thermogenesis or fat burning is the name of the game! Ask a competent instructor to explain the logic of “HIIT” to you and aim for 3-4 sessions weekly and also include a “SSC” session just to make sure your body is still burning fat and utilising both energy sources. When I advise my clients on where to being with “HIIT”, I will always give them something attainable; for example, 8 minutes although that doesn’t sound much and even less when you consider that includes warm up and cool down. Trust me when done properly, it’s plenty! Include this twice daily and you’re going to be in a great place for fat loss. You can also tailor your sessions by reducing rest periods or increasing work periods or both if you’re really brave. There are many “HIIT” variables! You must begin to take control of your body fat! You needn’t be paying through the teeth for personal training or cutting edge information that simply motivated you. Take control and don’t

allow anyone or anything take control of your destiny. I care not for excuses because I’ve heard and refuted them all. An excuse is not a reason for being unable to take control of your health and fitness wellbeing. Get up, go outside and suck in some of the world freshest air and get moving to create a caloric deficit whether it be jogging, cycling or simply power walking. It matters not – just get moving. If you are going to look after a muscle, make sure it’s the heart! Now I fully understand the confusion with the bombardment of information you guys are drip fed daily and realistically it all boils down to everyone trying to sell you their own “unique” product. Truthfully the only “unique” quality is the way it’s marketed. Lots of fitness professionals attempt to make you believe that there is only one way for you to progress and they tap in to your lack of knowledge so let’s address this. You guys are often being misinformed on what you need to be doing to create a thermogenic state – a fat burning state. You are paying good money to eat less, move more and include “fasting days”. Did you hear what I just told you? You are paying good money o do the obvious; this is not rocket science yet you pay time and time again to be told this. What’s going on here? Fasting – always a hot topic and everyone has an opinion. Bear in mind, fasting is an extreme measure and unless you really need to boil down to make a fight weight or model cover shoot and provided your diet is clean and nutritious then why go to such extremes? Keep in mind every single one of us fast daily hence the term breakfast. No matter what experts tell you, be mindful of the fact there is no definitive answer one way or the other on the effects long term of starving yourself on a regular basis. If you are healthy, in a relatively detoxed state and have a low body fat percentage then just question it first. Also be aware that fasting is absolutely disastrous if your goal is building muscle. That said if your diet sucks and you overindulge, then a day of

giving your digestive tract a rest is not a bad thing. My advice would be detox once a month, eat clean and whole foods; and also check your “current settings” before making decisions! Is there a more effective way; an easier way; is there something you could be implementing straight away? Well yes, and again its not rocket science but something many trainers and diet experts don’t tell you because quite simply they haven’t done their homework – sad but true. Ok I’m presuming your diet is clean; no junk; no fizzy nonsense; no alcohol or overindulgence; minimal dairy; good variety of protein and healthy fats; no sugar; yet you are still having trouble shifting that bad boy around your midriff right? TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR GLYCOGEN LEVELS! Ok no geek made theories – it will send you to sleep although sleep does promote thermogenesis. I’m going to tell you how you can take control of burning fat by taking control of your “glycogen levels” which is basically the carbohydrates within your muscles. Firstly carbs are immediately available for energy upon consumption and secondly unless you burn them off they do NOT go anywhere; they remain inside your body. Everyone has a store of glycogen and if you are continually eating carbs of any type then you are going to fill up that store and the remainder of consumed carbs are going to result in fat spill over. Store is full and you don’t burn them off, then it can only accumulate into one thing – fat. Look at it like this: A car is useless without fuel – you visit the pump; fill up the tank by pressing the lever; make the journey; run out of fuel; visit the pump and get distracted whilst pressing the lever – you overfill the tank. Now there is fuel all over the forecourt; you’re still distracted until the attendant yells in your face “what the hell are you doing?” (don’t do this folks – it’s a metaphor) You won’t lose fat upsetting pump attendants! You get the point – once your glycogen store is full, it’s full! You do not need any more glycogen when your store is full. Unless you are making the journey to burn them off, your stores will remain full. Use carbs for fuel – nothing else. So the big mistake people are making once they have accumulated way too much fat is they go in completely the opposite direction and go “no carbs” or low carbs because the carbs got them fat so cards are bad. Right? Wrong? Eh? This is where the confusion lies because 5-6 days of no carbs and guess what, your metabolism and T3/T4 leptin hormones have gone to sleep – not good news for the belly. So you need to stimulate these fat burning hormones and keep your metabolism happy so it continually goes to body fat and not food & calories consumed, as your go to energy source. Pretty simple carb cycling in a nutshell.

Reload; deplete; reload; deplete; keep glycogen in check and use fat for fuel. To begin you can go for 3 days (cardio) low carbs for your first meal only, then 3 days involving 3 carb meals – first meal, 3 hours prior to training (resistence) and then a large carb meal one hour after training. On a non training rest day, consume carbs every meal to reload that glycogen store. This protocol will ensure muscle maintenance plus fat reduction provided the carbs are quality and your hydration is optimal. Also take fruit on cardio days! DOESN’T MATTER HOW YOU ROTATE THESE DAYS CARDIO DAYS: MEAL ONE CARBS (OATS) – REST OF DAY; PROTEINS & FATS RESISTENCE TRAINING DAYS: 3 CARB MEALS – AM; PRE & POST WORKOUT DAY OFF: ALL MEALS WITH CARBS TO REPLENISH GLYCOGEN Keep hydration good with plenty of water and green tea. Consume only quality carbs – no bread or pasta if you can help it! 3-4 different fruit on cardio days. This is an effective approach to “rapid” fat loss and again I state it is only another option to accompany your training. Nothing stimulates your metabolism like exercise so get out there and get after it. Get your plan in place and remove any temptations that may distract you; don’t just wing it for a few days and hope for the best – make it happen! GALLERY TEST DRIVES THE NEW MAZDA CX-5 AND DISCOVERS SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY We headed off to the West Coast in the CX-5 on a very close, sunny Friday afternoon – thank goodness for air conditioning, it wasn’t long before the interior was cooling down nicely and we were cruising along. The first thing you notice when you put your foot down is the acceleration - this model is the 2.2 4WD Sport Nav Auto Diesel and for a 1620 Kg - or if you prefer 1.78 ton - diesel vehicle it shifts! It drives and handles like a car but with the sure footing of a 4 wheel drive... So far we were very impressed. The auto box has the option of manual gear changing which I like a lot; automatics are great for long distances but not so good if you want to have fun... The brochure says it has a new lockup clutch which provides linear acceleration which sounds good on paper but when driving, it really does feel more direct and smooth. This model is black metallic and looks smart with the 19 inch alloys and low profile tyres, the interior is tidy with black leather seats and a leather trimmed steering wheel. Its high tech and feature rich with all the latest satellite navigation and sound system systems, this model has the uprated Bose surround sound 9 speaker system which really does make your choice of music sound amazing.
All this is controlled by the Multimedia Commander which is located between the driver and the passenger, which allows easy control of a range of on-board features. Having an older car myself I still find the keyless entry and push button start and stop a little Buzz Lightyear but its easy and less hassle than the old style key ignition. The CX-5 has been designed from the ground up using Skyactiv Technology which looks at every detail of the vehicle and looks at ways to better it. What the brochure says... At Mazda, every idea begins with a challenge - to look at how things are done and see how we can do them differently. To go beyond the expected. To defy convention. And to find the ideal balance of driving pleasure, ingenuity and efficiency. This is how we set about creating the sensational Mazda CX5, the first new generation car adopting our ground - breaking SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY - an innovative new way to improve fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions, whilst simultaneously enhancing performance and driving dynamics. The all new Mazda CX-5, for drivers who don’t believe in compromises. With such a great car and so many enhancements features and benefits to accompany it, I would highly recommend visiting Forest Road Garage to find out more! Telephone 01481 235753

RETRO VIDEO GAMES
Insert coin: retro video games by WIll lAkemAn illustration by mATTheW le mAIsTre smITh
One of the only pleasures of getting older, fatter and less relevant is that you can take revenge on the young and beautiful by lecturing any kids you spot enjoying something about how much better it was when you were their age. It doesn’t matter whether that something is cars, music or the power of antibiotics, there’s nothing that makes up for the embarrassment of being too old to attend a nightclub like the satisfaction of knowing that nobody there is enjoying the music as much as you did before you knew what an overdraft was.
I
f you’re really lucky, you might even find that some of these impressionable youngsters start to agree with you, because apparently nothing is hipper these days than old stuff. I know very little about clothes, sunglasses and bicycles, but if there’s one area of retro fascination I do know about it’s video games. As an overgrown schoolboy I still buy every console that comes out, but deep in my faltering heart I know that exploding virtual prostitutes in high-definition 3D will never approach the simple joy of battling endless waves of ninjas or the compulsive monochrome mania that is Gameboy Tetris. Kids today, their arms probably aren’t even strong enough to lift the original Gameboy, so there’s no way they would understand why you’d stay up all night playing Zelda on a device that’s less powerful than the display on the front of a car stereo. They’ve probably never even been to an arcade, and therefore wouldn’t see the point of blowing a week’s paper round wages on completing Double Dragon, not when they can sit at home all day with Xbox games so realistic that they forget to go to the toilet for twelve hours and end up with deep vein thrombosis.
102 VINTAGE.indb 102
King of Kong Old games may not be as flashy, might lack the multi-million dollar budgets of Call of Duty, but any ageing arcade loiterer will tell you they’re every bit as compulsive and enjoyable. I’ve been hopelessly addicted to Pac-Man since the Atari 2600, and still periodically abandon my PS3 to haul out the Super Nintendo and play through the delightful Super Mario World with my creaking, arthritic fingers. Many of these games are as good today as they were when they first arrived in my stinking teenage bedroom, which probably explains why Nintendo has successfully tricked me into buying new versions of Castlevania and Donkey Kong for every new piece of hardware they bring out.
Retro games can also be much easier to pick up and play than modern titles, many of which are completely inaccessible to people without the time or inclination to memorise the functions of ten buttons and three joysticks before they even start playing. Compared to something like Grand Theft Auto, learning to play Space Invaders or Galaga is a doddle - you don’t even need to speak English to work out that the stick moves your ship from left to right and the only button is there to shoot at things. In fact, the existence of English text was more often a hindrance than anything else, as the days when most games came from Japan were notable for the abundance of confusing instructions concerning power-ups and your girlfriend being kidnapped by ninjas.

RETRO VIDEO GAMES
HARDWARE
Can the iPhone play Operation Wolf? The growing complexity of console and PC games might explain why the largest growth in the gaming market has been on friendly, accessible platforms like Nintendo’s Wii and Apple’s iOS devices. Every gamer knows (and frequently despises) people who consider you a pitiable, malnourished nerd if you admit to enjoying the likes of Halo or World of Warcraft, yet these same individuals are often happy to spend untold hours of
their own lives fiddling with Angry Birds or flailing wildly at Wii Sports. These so-called ‘casual’ games are so successful because they tap into the same accessible, yet addictive, play that early video games needed to attract a sceptical public to the arcade or console in the first place. Never mind that the likes of Arkanoid and Defender were so difficult that 20p would last you approximately
fifteen seconds, the games dragged you in because they were flashy, noisy and simple enough that anybody felt like they could participate, unlike most of today’s console blockbusters. Hardcore gamers may get snobbish about titles that sell to Grandma, but spend half an hour trying to get a nongamer to control Final Fantasy and you’ll quickly understand why the makers of super accessible guff like Farmville or Just Dance are richer than Scrooge McDuck.
How to get your retro game fix Arcades may be pretty much dead, but that doesn’t mean that the games themselves have gone to silicon heaven. The Sega Megadrive is gathering dust, but if you’re still interested in a game of Bomberman or FIFA 96 you’re in luck, because it’s probably gathering dust in somebody’s discount eBay store. I picked up a spare Megadrive and three Sonic cartridges from the Hospice shop in St Ouen for less than the cost of a new Xbox game, and even if you don’t have the room for cheap vintage hardware you can play most old games through the magic of emulation - the cunning idea of tricking a high-powered computer or console into behaving like a device that would have struggled to display more than 32 colours.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
VINTAGE.indb 103
Nintendo are more than happy to take your money to allow you to play blocky, flickering but still awesome versions of Bubble Bobble, Contra and Gradius on your Wii or 3DS, so put down your plastic golf club and head to their ‘virtual console’ shop with a bag full of shiny electronic gold. The Xbox and Playstation stores also have a large selection of retro titles, as well as a range of downloadable games that pay tribute to the classic titles that people enjoyed before everything was in 3D and confusing. You can even play many of the old classics for free on your computer, in many cases direct from your internet browser or by Googling ‘console emulation,’ queuing a few downloads and plugging in a decent joystick.
If arcade games are more your thing, you owe it to yourself to track down a copy of MAME (Multi Arcade Machine Emulator) - a free program for PC or Mac that will allow you to enjoy everything from Ghosts N Goblins to Mortal Kombat 3 after a bit of fiddling, assuming that your computer is slightly more recent than the games themselves. People with far more time and DIY talent than me have even gone as far as re-housing their computers in replica arcade cabinets made from plywood, but although I’m coordinated enough to finish Marble Madness, I’m rubbish with a hammer, so I’m holding out for the joyous day when somebody surprises me with one of those coffee table arcade machines, a box of Wham bars and enough raspberry Slush Puppy to keep me awake and playing Gauntlet for the next six months.

MY CAMERA COLLECTION words | Danielle Stonebridge
D
o you remember how exciting it was waiting for your holiday photos to be developed when digital was a little known thing? Well the novelty never wore off for me, in fact the opposite happened, whilst everyone else moved forward with technology I moved back. I got my first vintage camera, a Praktica Super TL, on my 16th birthday when I first expressed an interest in photography, unfortunately, a lack of experience in the art of vintage photography and a dodgy light meter slowed my interest until my 18th birthday when I received a box of four more cameras, by this time I was half way through A level photography and addicted to the darkroom. I didnt look back, my collection and enthusiasm have done nothing but grow. In my spare time I am a freelance photographer and around 60% of my work is film, (examples of my work can be seen at www.bridgesphotography.co.uk) most of which I process in my own darkroom built by my amazing Dad, definitely one of the greatest influences in my love of the intricate and well made, although I have provoked him to roll his eyes on a few occasions when returning with some of my ‘larger’ vintage finds! Including a huge oak desk which we had to dismantle completely to get in the house.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
VINTAGE.indb 105
Charity shops and auction rooms are where I tend to find my quarry although at times they prove to be very elusive. Half of the cameras in my collection are un-usable, the film they take is no longer produced. The other 50% however I use on a regular basis, the photos they produce are beautiful, each camera different to the next, there is so much variety, and I love that, with each new camera, I have to learn a new set of controls, there is no way to cheat, my pet hate is people with SLR’s permanently set to auto! My favorite camera (and the most valuable) is my Nikon FM2, I received it from my family for my 21st birthday after spending quite some time longing for one. It is also the youngest in my vintage collection, the oldest being a folding pocket Kodak produced between 1903 and 1915. The oldest vintage items I own are a photo album with a hand written date of 1882 and a beautiful singer sewing machine from my closest friends, also dated in the 1800’s. My collection also boasts a large array of teacups and, possibly my favorite vintage item, a stereoscopic 3D viewer, by far the hardest and the most expensive vintage item I have personally gone after!

TOM AND TYLER’S MUSIC PAGES
KING OF THE WAVES I was lucky enough to catch Nottingham’s finest power trio Little Barrie headlining the centre circle stage at the Guernsey festival. Though the turnout was less than inspiring, considering Macy Gray was loafing around the mainstage, a small crowd always seemed inevitable. Nevertheless the band didn’t let this detract from their performance and put on a marvelous show for all that weren’t totally dim witted dwelling under the big top. With a set list mainly consisting of songs from their latest album and the odd few jewels from the past, they put on a staggering rock ‘n’ roll show with elements of R&B/Soul/Funk/Blues and Garage (Traditional R&B standing for Rhythm and Blues not the modern bastardization) and was plenty for everybody to get their teeth into. It’s also nice to see frontman Barrie Calogan coming out of his shell, in fact almost unrecognizable from the shy and polite Barrie when not on stage. I bought King of the waves shortly after, only furthering my faith in the band consisting of 3 of the nicest guys I have ever met in the music industry - Sincere, honest and passionate about their music. With such a fantastic ethos combined with superb songwriting, it almost seems too good to be true. Make sure you give this band a chance and if you like what you hear, buy the album. After all, bands like Little Barrie are becoming an endangered species... TYLER
SPEAKEASY
VALE EARTH FAIR Once again the Vale Earth Fair collective pulled out all the stops for their big day of the year and fought rain and wind to get things going on time and with some great music. For me the day was, as it often is, a bit of a game of two halves with the afternoon and the evening both having a very different feel. The relaxed atmosphere of the afternoon was served some great music on the main stage with SugarSlam and Last of the Light Brigade being particular highlights. The evening was ushered in by a great set from mod-supergroup Speakeasy before things got heavy on the outside stage with Teaspoonriverneck and Stan Smith providing a dual burst of panChannel Island hard rock and metal. While I didn’t really catch the mainstage headliners - Top Buzzer did a great job of rounding off my night on the ‘Stage Against The Machine’ stage, blasting through a set that teetered on the edge of collapse but was held together with aplomb by these pop-punk heroes. Another great year in the end from the Vale Earth Fair then, and, for me at least, the more rock-y outside stage was a major improvement... TOM
But this is something of a minor quibble as the album sounds great (thanks to Danny Joyce’s production work) and is a solid entry in the genre of heavy hard rock. Musically, this is the best that I have heard from Dead Wing and it really serves to demonstrate that their originals are actually very good songs.
DEAD WING
For a couple of years Dead Wing have been making their mark on Guernsey’s music scene with their combination of hard rock and grunge, particularly via covers of the likes of Black Sabbath, Nirvana and Jimi Hendrix. They’ve now released their debut album, containing seven original tracks that pretty much stick to the blueprint laid out by their choice of live covers. From the start, the album sounds like something a bit different from many albums made over here in that this could come from anywhere and doesn’t have the sound of a ‘Guernsey record’.
108 VINTAGE.indb 108
All in all Dead Wing’s debut is a solid bit of heavy hard rock that sets them out as one of the better bands making this kind of noise in Guernsey and has a universal sound that could have the potential to carry the band onto bigger things... TOM

LIGHT OF THE NIGHT TOUR words | Jack Fletcher
F
or September 2012, Future Shock Music Promotions have scheduled a tour across the country seeing bands Nightworkers, Last of the Light Brigade and Of Empires play London, Brighton and Southampton with shows culminating in Guernsey and Jersey. The Guernsey date is the penultimate show in this ambitious programme. The tour is to get Guernsey bands Last of the Light Brigade and Of Empires out to a wider audience, gain some exposure and most importantly, rock the UK. Joining the two bands on the tour are Brighton Indie band Nightworkers with their unique blend of electronically pulsing, guitar driven hypnotic rock to add to the already varied stylings of rock ‘n’ roll seen from the other two bands on the tour. Future Shock Promoter and Lead Vocalist of Of Empires says “The great thing about this tour is the eclectic mix of different genres of Rock. Each band is totally unique, bringing something different to the show but at the same time complementing each other perfectly. The tour, I think, will bring back the vibe of how rock music used to be in the 60’s and 70’s, raw, energetic and honest.”
OF EMPIRES
“Born as a result of the all-inspiring state that is intoxication, like the spawn of an accident that happened one fateful night but one you’ll never regret. Of Empires have only just entered the world and their declaration: To embark on a stripped down, no bullshit rock ‘n’ roll. Reminiscent in places of the hard rock sounds of the 1970s, a genuine and authentic sound driving the pure fundamentals of that rock ‘n’ roll tradition which we all believe in.” ~ Of
Empires
“With their new take on the hard rock sounds of the 1970s, debut single I Am The Night certainly hints this is a band worth watching.” ~ Tommy Girard The Guernsey leg of the tour takes place on Friday 28th September 2012 @ The Fermain Tav. 7.30 till midnight. Entry is £5. Line up Nightworkers, Last Of The Light Brigade, Of Empires + support TBC.
NIGHTWORKERS
“Nightworkers have emerged from the insomnia of a town that never sleeps. Taking influence from rock ‘n’ roll’s finest craftsmen including Primal Scream, Rolling Stones and Brian Jonestown Massacre, their unique blend of electronically pulsing, guitar driven hypnotic rock creates a stampede of sonic ecstasy. They have kept close to them the identity and beliefs of great guitar bands that modern music has lost along the way. Nightworkers not only demonstrate a brave, solid sound but visually seduce you through the intensity of their performance and the strength and belief behind their songs.” ~ Sarah Wade, Disorder magazine “Last of the Light Brigade formed in 2010 and following the amicable departure of guitarist Joshua Moore settled on the more angry three-piece set up for which they are best known. Having recorded the album The Ones You Left Behind at the analogue Gizzard Studios in London, their own distinctive brand of British rock has seen them carve out a niche in Guernsey’s music scene and earn acclaim from Radio 2’s Janice Long and local luminaries The Risk. In 2010 they supported Paul Weller at the Jersey Live festival, and last year shared the stage with Ocean Colour Scene at the inaugural Guernsey Festival of Performing Arts.” ~ Dominic Laine BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

If you see something you like, give them a call and tell them you saw them in Gallery! We’ll love you forever...
