EDITO

Here’s our number, call us baby

edito W

elcome weary traveller to your latest destination: the wanderlust edition of Gallery magazine. Inside you’ll find all manner of interesting adventures to, and beyond, the horizons of local life. We have film and fashion reviews, travel photography and reveries, travel guides for all ages, book reviews, and short stories. So step forth into this barely mapped literary continent of cultural delights and explore. But, before you embark on your journey of a month-time, we should make sure you’re adequately prepared. And what better way to prepare for the wanderlust edition than with an examination of that feeling. The word wanderlust comes from the German wandern (to hike) and lust (desire), and roughly translated means an enjoyment of ‘strolling, roaming about or wandering’ according to Wikipedia. It entered into the English language in 1902, a reflection of the journeyman (apprenticeship) tradition of German Romanticism. However, when we think of wanderlust today, we only occasionally think of young, lederhosen clad, workmen strolling from hill to hill. Instead it denotes a kind of passion, a desire for the new, both geographically and culturally. When we speak of someone consumed by wanderlust, we picture seasoned travellers addicted to the thrill of finding a new home, however temporarily. So, with that cleared up we assume you know what you’re getting yourself into. Without further ado, pick up your rucksack and tie back your dreadlocks, it’s time to set off on the long road to next month. And remember, the journey is every bit as important as the destination.

CONTRIBUTORS

THIS MONTH WE ASKED OUR CONTRIBUTORS A THEMED QUESTION... If money was no object and you could go to ANY destination, where would it be and why?

JASON SHAMBROOK

I would go to the centre of the earth to see exactly what the film was all about and possibly meet up with Professor Lidenbrock. CAROLINE MAUGER

This year I was lucky enough to go to India, which I’d wanted to visit for years. Next on my wish list would be Australia and New Zealand: I’d like to spend a few months there, five star all the way please. So kind of Gallery to offer this to the writers! KAY WORTHINGTON

I would go to Neverland and pick up the marbles I lost some time ago. However, if there was too much fog and I couldn’t negotiate my way past the second star to the right and straight on till morning, I might like to visit Monument Valley in Utah, and become a cowgirl. Yippeeyio!!

be awesome, and as a billionaire I would buy a house in any little place I came to that took my fancy. But eventually, my life of leisure would have to end. I have no doubt that travelling the world in such a manner, I would encounter any number of injustices. I’d probably also learn lots of awesome ninja skills and stuff because, well, why not. And so, eventually, I’m sure that my mind would turn to what I, as a highly skilled billionaire with a strong sense of justice, could do to make things better. Of course, it would be dress as a bat and hunt the vermin that prays on the weak. So, my glorious world tour would end, as I have no doubt that I would eventually become Batman. Just for the record, by the way, I am not currently Batman.

FOO PEARSON

LOIS MANSFIELD

MARTINE ELLIS

Zihuatanejo, Mexico... it’s a little place right on the Pacific. The Mexicans say that the Pacific has no memory and that’s where I’d like to be, a warm place with no memory, for a time.

EMMA FAWSON

If money was no object, I’d like to go to Finland at Christmas. I’d stay in a log cabin with a roaring fire and go on a husky sled. I love the snow; it’s so much more festive than the rain we usually get.

KATE LISTER

There are too many places in the world that I would love to visit, so, if money was really no object, I’d get myself a private jet and go wander the world. At the moment though, I would love to see the Northern Lights and go whale watching in Alaska. I’ve been whale watching twice and did not seen any whales on either trip so hopefully I’d be successful this time!

THEO LEWORTHY

If money was no object, and I could do whatever I liked, I’d probably do a world tour. I’d spend two or maybe three years just travelling from place to place drinking in different local bars around the world, or occasionally on a beach or the top of a mountain or something like that. It would

If I were made of money, I would hot-foot it right over to Richard Branson’s little piece of paradise, Necker Island. Aside from the fact that it is super secluded and private, nothing would make me more chipper than soaking up the sunshine in the lap of luxury, with golden sands and the ocean right on the doorstep, having spa treatments on tap, and all whilst being waited on hand and foot. Sigh... VIV PALLOT

I’d love to spend the rest of my life travelling in comfortl! No single destination, just lots of round-the-world trips would keep me happy! But I’d also help out a few folk along the way…. When I left education I went straight into work, while some of my friends went travelling. It wasn’t for me at the time, I am not really a back-packing/hostel sort of a girl. However, if money were no object, then I’d definitely want to ‘go travelling’ for a year, at least, but I’d do it in style. I’d stay in the finest hotels and travel in the most comfortable, luxurious way possible. I think the seven wonders of the world would be a good starting point (minus the pyramids, I’ve seen those).

artwright looked out of the observatory window. Mars was red and barren beyond the confines of the Dome, humanity’s first space colony. It had taken almost twenty years to construct, a joint effort undertaken by all developed countries on Earth. At the time, Cartwright knew, it had been sold as the first glimpse of a new future: a future of cooperation between nations and a return of the pioneer spirit. The truth, however, was that Earth was quickly becoming inhospitable. In 2042, when Cartwright had been a young man embarking upon the first of his many adventures, the science officer of the United Nations had privately addressed the leaders of the world. They had found irrefutable proof that pollution levels had reached critical mass. Climate change was not only undeniable, it was irreversible, and the swathes of natural disasters overcoming the globe were thought to be a direct result. Earth was five years away from an energy crisis. Natural, sustainable power had failed to fill the void left by fossil fuels, and Earth’s coal, gas and oil were all but gone. At the time, of course, Cartwright had been as oblivious to the danger as anyone else. In 2042 he was documenting what he (erroneously) believed to be the extra terrestrial origins of the Amahuaca people of the southeastern Amazon basin in Peru and Brazil. A wry smile passed his lips for an instant as he recalled a mountain top duel with the nefarious Professor Gault, his intellectual adversary and nemesis. Unbidden, the cybernetic ring finger of his left hand twitched, recalling it’s former life as an appendage of flesh and blood. Cartwright stood, and paced to the other end of his spacious apartment. The news of the Great Space Exploration hit upon his return to London in the same year. Brooding from his failure in the Amazon, Cartwright had been fascinated by the concept of space travel and interstellar adventure. Virgin territories lay nestled in the night sky waiting for him to unlock their secrets. A few years later, in 2045, Cartwright had been given the opportunity to experience space travel himself. Having finally solved the riddle of the Sphinx, he singlehandedly brought the Cult of Set,

a bizarre group of occult inspired terrorists in Egypt, to justice. And in doing so, came to the attention of the CIA. The first bio-dome, the Moon project, had failed cataclysmically. Despite early optimism, it had become quickly apparent that too much debris from Earth was circling the asteroid. Three attempts (and 57 lives) later, the project was abandoned, and work on Mars began. But Cartwright had never expected to be a part of it. 2070. His 50th birthday. Sir Gerald W Cartwright, PHD: adventurer, intellectual, gentleman; son of the infamous 20th century detective Sir Barnabas Cartwright. And he was spending it here, on this god forsaken red rock, in exile. 5 years ago, Cartwright had been discovered with his pants down (literally and figuratively) in the same room as the Prime ministers wife and daughter. It had not been his finest hour. So now he was confined to Mars, the British ambassador to the Dome, humanity’s new home. It had been exciting at first, but the terraforming project was slow moving, and there was only so much to see inside the Dome. Cartwright longed to be trekking in the Himachal Pradesh, wondering through the amazon, sitting in a Bedouin tent in the Sahara drinking bitter coffee. He missed the myriad sights and smells of Earth. He missed Jamaican rum on the beaches. He missed the run down smoke filled bars in New Africa. Most of all, he missed the women: all colours, accents and ages. The Dome did a poor job of replicating Earths cultural diversity. It had it’s own drab colours and smells. It was no place for a traveller. No place for an adventurer. But it was all that was left. Cartwright picked up a large glass of the Martian whisky he kept by his bedside and downed it in one. It was a poor copy of its ancestors, uncertain whether it was trying to be scotch or bourbon and failing at both. It’s synthetic flavour lingered in his nostrils as he looked out into space. He thought he could see it, a tiny speck glowing in the distance. All that was left after last year’s disaster. The dead rock he’d once called home.

HOROSCOPES

YOUR MONTHLY HOROSCOPES words | Sharon Ward

illustration | Helina Matthews

ARIES March 21 -April 19

LIBRA September 23 -October 22

Slow but steady is the way forward this month. Mars going into Capricorn mid month will bring you focus and discipline, just don’t expect anything to happen in an instant. Sets your sights as high as you like though, nothing can stop you . You can climb any mountain right now.

Life will be fun and frolics until the 22nd. Your charm and grace will get you places that before you’ve only dreamed of. From this date, money matters will come to the fore. However, you’ll soon realise that there’s more to life than money and that some life lessons really are good for the soul

TAURUS April 20 -May 20

You’re charming and graceful up until the 22nd then it all changes. Venus into Scorpio means that anyone who treads on you is going to get stung. Go easy on your enemies though – next month you may need their help. The end of the month brings an opportunity for reconciliation.

GEMINI May 21 -June 20

You can certainly see through everyone at the moment. Your mind is razor sharp and you’re ready to take on the world. Words are your weapon, but they also open up opportunities, so be a little careful before you speak without thinking – you could do more harm than good.

CANCER June 21 -July 22

The eclipse on the 13th gives you the opportunity to begin again. You’re much more powerful than you realise. If you’re not happy with the way things are, then its time to change. Work backwards – think about where you’d really like to be in your life and then make the changes that will get you there.

LEO July 23 -August 22

Time to get on with all of those plans you keep talking about. From the middle of the month, there will be the opportunity to clear out the past and move on properly. It might not be easy, but its time to put some things in the bin once and for all. Then you’ll be free to make your dreams reality

VIRGO August 23 -September 22

Mercury is changing direction on the 6th and so recent ideas and plans will need a review. If you don’t recheck everything now, then later you could find that you’ve missed some of the finer details. You’re on the right path; you just have to make sure that all of the bricks are safely cemented in

SCORPIO October 23 -November 21

The Sun in Scorpio will bring energy and vitality to you. It’s about time as of late you may have felt as though the world has been sitting on your shoulders. The eclipse on the 13th will bring an opportunity for better understanding of what you need from life. Don’t be afraid to stand tall and demand what you know is rightfully yours.

SAGITTARIUS November 22 -December 21

You have the ability to accomplish a great deal this month. Use your loving warmth and charm to get others to do some of the work for you while you concentrate on bigger plans. Have faith in what you want to do and it will come easily to you - stride forward with confidence you’ll shine as the star you truly are.

CAPRICORN December 22 -January 19

Deep feelings bubbling under the surface will come out this month. Anything that’s been hidden will come out into the world and no-one can keep a secret from you. If you listen carefully and make good use of what you hear, you’ll know exactly what to do next.

AQUARIUS January 20 -February 18

Life is about to change and you’ll get the opportunity to prove to everyone that you’re on the right track. You’ll soon see clearly where you want to go and you’ll be set on heading straight there. Just make sure that you let others in on your plans so that you have some company on the way

PISCES February 19 -March 20

You can go towards the unknown with faith right now. Tread where others are afraid to and you’ll soon realise that there’s nothing is to fear. The more you stand up to others, the more you’ll realise that they’re not anywhere near as strong or as powerful as you thought they were.

In a scene familiar to anyone who has ever hosted a house party, only to be stuck with cleaning up the mess left behind, members of the Red Bull crew, which sponsored the deathdefying stunt, were settled with the responsibility to recover Baumgartner’s capsule and pack up the balloon that deposited the apparatus on terra firma.

MAYAN CALENDAR

UPFRONT

IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT

T

he Mayan Calendar predicts the end of the world in 21/12/2012... Much of what was discussed revolves around a time period, not a specific date. The time period is the 6 month period between the Spring and Fall equinoxes. After that period comes the Winter Solstice on December 21 2012. The Maya had numerous calendars with which they tracked the movements of the planets (Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter) and the rotation of the Earth around the Sun. Two of these Mayan calendars are those which draw our attention to 12/21/2012. The Maya Tzolkin Calendar and the Maya Long Count Calendar, both contain references many today believe point to the year 2012. So is it time to rush to the supermarket and bulk buy tins of beans?

EHECATONATIUM (Sun of the Wind) “Second Epoch, at the end of which humanity was destroyed by strong winds the Gods transformed human beings into apes, in order that they might cling better and not be carried away by the hurricanes, thus originating the similarity between the Human Race and the Simians…” This was because large forests had been found razed by tornados.

QUIAUHTONATIUM (Sun of Fire Rain) “Third Cosmogonic Epoch, in which everthing was extinguished by the rain of lava and fire. Men were transformed at this time into birds thus saving themselves from the slaughter ….” They justified this belief due to the many signs of volcanic activities in our territory and also on account of the discovery of huts and skeletons under layers of lava and ashes.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

OCELOTONATIUM (Sun of Jaguar) was the first and most remote of the four Cosmogonic Epochs, in which the giants who had been created by gods, lived. They did not till the soil and lived in caves, ate wild fruits and roots and were finally attacked and devoured by the Jaguars….” The basic Epoch of the Aztecs goes back to the Quaternary, since they discovered bones of pre-diluvian animals buried in deep gullies below desne lythospheric layers.

ATONATIUM (Sun of Water)”means the fourth Epoch, at the end of which everything perished because of terrific storms and torrential rains that covered the earth. Reaching the peaks of the highest mountains the gods changed men into fishes to save them from this universal deluge…” The discovery of different fossilized species of marine fauna on the top of the mountains created the basis of this belief.

HIMBY

HIMBY* words | Kay Worthington

I AM A BIT OF A HIMBY – I AM *HAPPY IN MY BACK YARD, AND COMFY IN MY LITTLE NEST, SURROUNDED BY FAMILY, AND DEVOID OF THE NEED TO DISCOVER ANCIENT RUINS IN FAR FLUNG PLACES, I REMAIN - PRETTY ISLAND FOCUSSED AND WITHOUT ANY WANDERLUST WHATSOEVER. I sometimes fret at folks who desire nothing better than escape from what they perceive to be a humdrum Guernsey existence, and try their hand at visiting some exotic place other than our small islands and even considering moving away completely. You know what I mean, there you are, sipping your Pina Colada whilst watching the sun set over a beautiful seascape in the South of France, and you think, for one split second, what it would be like to move, lock, stock and kitchen sink to a new place. You don’t really think about the downside at this point; how you would fit in, given that the only language you speak is garbled English when shouting at the kids, and moderately rude, when greeting bad drivers on a country lane. You don’t think about the beaurocratic nightmare that is getting a new National Insurance number when no one in certain parts of the UK has ever heard of Guernsey. And you do not think that you would ever, ever, ever miss Guernsey! There is, for example a large community of Guernsey ex-pats living in New Zealand. It could be called Sarnia-on-Sea – given the seemingly close proximity of the other Guerns who similarly moved away from this Island to be, well, close to other islanders! It is such a long way to go to get a feeling of community. I understand that the average honeymoon period for expats lasts for approximately 18 months. This is touch and go time for people – when the inevitable “should I stay, or should I go” feeling descends on you. Are you just homesick, or simply sick of the place you now call home and have spent hundreds of pounds relocating to? I experience a feeling of déjà vu, when you listen to someone else saying that they have had enough of Guernsey’s bright lights and are upsticking and going to live in Bognor Regis or some other exotic destination. Yes, they have cheap housing there and plentiful jobs (if you really want to work in McLow Expectation that is). But for me, there is a feeling of “been there, done that”. When I was young, there was no coolness about living in Guernsey. I couldn’t see the quaintness of our island paradise, and I couldn’t wait to go and visit the Smoke and spread my wings. Of course the reality is a bit different to your dreams. I certainly felt like a little country mouse once I had stepped off the Tube; everyone knew where they were going, and boy were they unfriendly!. Talk about green around the gills. The taxi driver told me in no uncertain terms to put away my jewellery I was wearing as I was likely to be mugged. Mugged? Gosh. That’s a term not used normally in Guernsey! Eventually, I found my feet in the City – loved the night

20

clubs and all the excitement therein. I loved the fact that you could shop until dawn if you really wanted to. But there was something missing. For me, it was the sound of the sea! I missed it terribly, along with my family and the certainty that if I was to walk into Town there would be half a dozen people I knew. In a big City you are definitely anonymous, and at first I loved this. I could be whoever I wanted to be and no one knew you as “the girl Cadman” or who you went to school with or who knew your past. But after a while this sense of anonymity felt more like homesickness – and I missed waving to the window cleaner I saw every day walking into Town, and I missed the paper shop person knowing exactly what I would be looking at first in the Guernsey Press (like all Guerns, the Hatches, Matches and Despatches!!). So I came home and stayed for a while, until the feeling of Wanderlust overcame me again. This is the funny thing. Wanderlust can envelop you at any moment. You don’t have to be young to want to trek up Machu Picchu. There’s a whole market out there specialising in over 60’s white water rafting in outer Mongolia for example or holidays entitled Mid Life Crisis Management in Minorca for Men. But I do think that TV has a lot to answer for of course. You can be sitting there on your sofa, eating a Twix and minding your own business, when someone appears on the screen urging you to take up canoeing in Cambodia, or getting to know grizzly bears and whale watching in Canada. Suddenly, the flood gates are reopened. Your ears prick up and you start to tingle with excitement. Holidays! My two day spree camping on Herm and watching puffins has somehow been eclipsed by reports of a new adventure 12 night luxury cruise down the Nile. Looking out for the pyramids suddenly seems a lot more interesting. But then…..I remember the hours waiting at Gatwick or Heathrow for a flight out to far flung places. I think of sitting in a car and driving for six hours to get to somewhere unimportant in France. I remember Florida in the height of summer. Sweltering and getting rather hot under the collar having done the theme parks in quick succession – being so hot and irritable that the entire family went around “the World” in Epcot in under an hour!! My thoughts then skip to a fish and chip supper, eaten whilst watching the floaty boaties coming in and out of the harbour in St Peter Port and the golden moon shining on the water. I was behaving like my parents who would take a flask of tea to enjoy near the Model Yacht Pond. My goodness – I am not only turning into my parents, I have already become them! It is of course natural to want to travel and see the sights of the world. I want my children to see as much of the world as they can; to realise that Guernsey is a very small dot on a map and there is a whole adventure just waiting out there for them. But, even after a short holiday to France, there is nothing quite like coming home – finding that nothing has changed in our little world and Guernsey is still Guernsey. I am a HIMBY and proud of it!

24 PEAK CHALLENGE

24 PEAK CHALLENGE WEATHER FORCES GARENNE TEAM TO ABANDON 24 PEAKS CHALLENGE

‘Obviously we were disappointed not to have completed the challenge but the decision was out of our hands and the organisers had to put safety first. We are now looking at what else we could do to try and reach our fundraising total of £24,024 as we want to do all we can to raise the money we said we would for two very deserving charities.’ The team, which was made up of John Waterman, Russell Bailey, Danielle Hanley, Paul Salazar, James Travers, David Stuart, Richard Kalvis, Richard Breban, Deb Thompson, Nathan Crabb, Richard Moore, Adam Dorey and Monika Markowska, visited Guernsey Cheshire Home before they flew to the UK ‘It was a privilege for us to meet the residents and staff at Guernsey Cheshire Home. The Cheshire Homes in both islands are superb organisations that provide a unique and invaluable service to islanders. We are very fortunate that we have these facilities to support families at a time when they need it the most. It was also very inspiring for us to gain a better understanding of the challenge the management teams constantly face in raising the money needed to cover the running costs,’ said Mr Hall. All of the money raised will be split between the Guernsey and Jersey Cheshire Homes, which provide care for people with serious physical disabilities in as close to a family atmosphere as possible. The charities provide support for adults living with disabilities such as multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, stroke and spinal injury and provides them with the right to live a life of their choosing. The Cheshire Homes in both islands also offer a very important lifeline for disabled people who require day care or short stay care and provides a respite for those who care for them.

B

ad weather forced the team from Garenne Group to abandon its 24 Peaks Challenge last weekend.

The 14 strong team from Guernsey and Jersey aimed to climb 24 peaks in the Lake District, each over 2,400 feet, within the 24 hour time limit to raise money for the Guernsey and Jersey Cheshire Homes. The challenge, which includes the well-known peaks of Red Pike, Scafell Pike and Helvellyn, is regarded as one of the most demanding endurance events available as a charity challenge. ‘I don’t think any of us really appreciated what the weekend had in store for us but we had all done plenty of training and so we were as prepared as we could have been. We knew it was going to be tough but the fact that we had already raised more £10,000 for the Guernsey and Jersey Cheshire Homes was a huge incentive for us,’ said Garenne Group chief executive officer Andy Hall, who travelled with the team as support.

The Guernsey Cheshire Home requires £1m. a year to provide the care it does and in Jersey the running costs are between £4. and £5m. Neither facility receives direct funding from the States of Guernsey or States of Jersey or from the Leonard Cheshire Disability. Although in Jersey, there is a charge for services, both homes rely heavily on the generosity of islands to raise the money needed each year. Anyone wanting to sponsor the team can go to www.justgiving. com/garenne24peak or send a cheque made out to Garenne Construction Ltd and posted to Garenne House, Rue de la Cache, St Sampson’s, GY2 4AF. Further information on the challenge can be found at www.garenne.gg/24peak

Day one saw the team complete 13 peaks, one more than they had originally planned, and climb a total of more than 10,000 feet in less than 12 hours. On the Saturday night, the team was warned that the weather forecast looked uncertain for the next day’s climbs. ‘On Sunday morning, we were all ready to go when the guides informed us that the 70mph winds, heavy rain and low visibility meant it was too dangerous for the challenge to continue. We were keen to at least try and complete the miles and so hiked for another four hours lower down but eventually had to accept that the weather was against us,’ said Mark Palfrey, joint managing director of RG Falla, who was part of the team.

OUR COMMUNITY ISLAND’S BIGGEST EVER FUNDRAISING APPEAL REACHES £4 MILLION TOTAL LES BOURGS HOSPICE HAS COMPLETED ITS REDEVELOPMENT APPEAL AND RAISED £4 MILLION At the start of 2010, Les Bourgs launched Guernsey’s biggest ever fundraising appeal to demolish the old building and develop a hospice facility fit for the 21st century. With a target of £4 million, chairman of the board of governors Mike Tanguy called upon the generosity of islanders to help them achieve it. ‘It’s taken us three years but I am absolutely delighted to announce that the Les Bourgs Hospice Redevelopment Appeal is now closed. It is extremely humbling for me to make that announcement as we couldn’t have done it without the fantastic support of islanders who have taken this appeal to their hearts and helped us raise more money for one charitable project than has ever been raised in Guernsey before,’ he said. ‘From everyone involved with the hospice, the board of governors, the staff, the Friends and the volunteers, we have to thank every person, whether they gave £1 or thousands. They have ensured that islanders with life-limiting illnesses have use of what is a truly fabulous facility.’ In June, the Friends of Les Bourgs Hospice launched its third Million Pound Lottery and it had been hoped to raise the remaining £400,000 from the profit of ticket sales. At Saturday’s draw, it was announced that around 200 tickets had not been sold and so the full amount had not been raised. ‘Despite that, our accountant has today confirmed that because we have received donations over the last few months, the outstanding amount had been reduced already. So, thanks to the hard work of Jack Honeybill and the Friends of Les Bourgs Hospice, we have been able to use the profits from the lottery to cover the outstanding amount and still have money left which will go towards the £700,000 annual running costs,’ said Mr Tanguy. ‘I want to personally thank Jack and his team for their tireless

26

commitment and energy. They give up literally thousands of hours each year to help raise the money needed for the running costs and have been instrumental in helping us reach the Redevelopment Appeal total.’

GUERNSEY BEREAVEMENT SERVICE HAS AN IT UPGRADE THANKS TO 2E2

SUPPORT GIVEN TO YOUNG PEOPLE GUERNSEY BY THE SURE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION IS ALREADY HELPING LOCAL YOUNGSTERS.

THE GUERNSEY BEREAVEMENT SERVICE HAS RECEIVED A FREE IT UPGRADE THANKS TO IT SERVICE PROVIDERS 2E2.

The foundation, which aims to help local charities using money donated by the company and by staff through their salary, has supplied YPG’s new centre, The Hub, with a computer, printer, mobile phones and broadband. It also covered the costs of offices desks and chairs as well as other pieces of furniture in a donation totalling £5,000. ‘As the island’s largest telecommunications company, we are delighted that we can use our expertise to help YPG create a centre that meets the needs of its staff and its users,’ said Sure chief executive Eddie Saints.

The Service has been provided with a fully configured brand new laptop for use with training courses, a new PC to replace an old one for the office, a backup solution for their data and a new wireless router to improve their internet performance.

‘We are delighted to hear that within the first month of opening that the technology we have supplied and installed is already bringing benefits.’ Chair of YPG Jane St Pier said the support from Sure was invaluable.

Maura Stacey from the Guernsey Bereavement Service said: “Loss and grief is something that everyone will experience and we see on average 150 people a year. Since teaming up with 2e2, our team of volunteers can concentrate on the service without having to worry about their IT needs. We are very grateful to 2e2 for their efficiency and their willingness to help us so that we can improve our service.”

‘Our two staff, Charlie Cox and Josh Smale, are out and about all of the time and so it was vital that they could be contacted whenever someone needed our services. To have the mobile phones supplied to us means that we don’t have to worry about that cost and can use the money elsewhere,’ she said. Mrs St Pier said the computer and printer, which had been donated by Sure, were available for users of The Hub and she was surprised by demand.

This is not the first time 2e2 have supported the Guernsey Bereavement Society as 2e2’s Service Delivery Manager James Pinnock explains: ‘We’ve been supporting the Service since 2009 during which time we have looked after all their IT needs. As Maura said, bereavement will affect us all at some time and by taking care of all their IT needs, Maura and her team of volunteers are free to concentrate on offering the very best care and support to those who need it.’

SURE SUPPORT ALREADY REAPING BENEFITS AT THE HUB

‘We tend to think that everyone has access to the internet these days but that’s not the case. We have already had some teenage girls coming in to use the computer to look for part-time jobs and youngsters using it to research for their homework,’ she said. The business has the largest pool of telecommunications expertise available and delivers mobile, broadband, fixed line, data centre and enterprise solutions to a diverse customer base including consumers, private and public sector clients. We are also specialists in off shore connectivity, enabling those companies that operate in the islands to reliably and efficiently connect and transact with their global partners.

Danny Boyle

words | Jonathon Holloway

DIRECTOR OF THE MONTH

Danny Boyle can undoubtedly be described as a travelling film maker. His films have taken us from the drugs dens of Scotland to the Slums of Mumbai, from the deserted streets of London to the canyons of Utah, even stopping for a trip to the sun along the way. Born and raised in Lancashire, from an early age Boyle had a taste for the dramatic and forged his early career directing theatre productions for the Royal Court Theatre and even several productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He honed his screen craft working for BBC Northern Ireland where he worked on television programmes such as Inspector Morse. His breakthrough onto the silver screen came with his film directorial debut “Shallow Grave” in 1994, which became the most successful British film of that year. His big break into the mainstream came with his follow-up film, “Trainspotting”, now a cultural icon of British cinema. Boyle’s stylised film making techniques soon grabbed the attention of audiences and critics and his following films gained steady critical praise and commercial success. This climaxed in 2008 when Boyle released “Slumdog Millionaire”, which won 8 Academy Awards including Best Director for himself and grossed over $300 million worldwide. Boyle can also be noted with his focus on the characters in his films, many suiting the bill of a “Character Study”. This meaning that the film focuses on a character in an uncontrollable world, discover the character’s own emotions and motives, rather than focusing on the events happening around the character. This technique allowed Boyle to satisfy his adventurous taste and set his films in all manner of locations. Allowing him to uncover the true nature of the character in any location, from the zombie infested streets of London in “28 Days Later”, to Aron Ralston’s tale of survival in the canyons of Utah, turning even the mundane into the exotic.

VINTAGE

À Bout De Soufflé

PG 1960 Starring:Jean-Paul Belmondo & Jean Seberg The directorial debut of film critic Jean-Luc Godard, À Bout De Soufflé is his first in a line of films which helped found the film movement of “La Nouvelle Vogue” with other fellow French film makers during the 1960s. Petty criminal Michel (Belmondo) kills a policeman after stealing a car and hides out with his American girlfriend Patricia (Seberg) in Paris, triying to convince her to run away with him to Italy. Godard was fascinated by Hollywood and as such the film is rife with references to Classical Hollywood, and in particular the work of Humphrey Bogart and that of American Noir. The structure can be disjointed at times but it remains as a classic of French cinema.

28

Argo

15 Dir. Ben Affleck Starring: Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston & Alan Arkin. Ten years ago you wouldn’t be mistaken to say that Ben Affleck’s career had gone down the toilet, however in recent years his career has once again sky-rocketed. After achieving critical and commercial acclaim with ‘Gone Baby Gone’ in 2006 and the magnificent ‘The Town’ in 2009, Affleck returns to his third directorial feature with ‘Argo’. During the Iranian Revolution of 1979, CIA agent Tony Mendez (Affleck) has to rescue six American embassy staff who escaped from violent revolutionaries. Mendez comes up with a plan to fake the production of a movie called “Argo” in Iran so they can mount the rescue.

The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn part 2 12A Dir. Bill Condon Starring: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart & Taylor Lautner.

The fifth and final instalment of the hit vampire series which has so far made over $2.5 billion worldwide is sure to have legions of teenage girls (and some boys) screaming. Based upon ‘Breaking Dawn’, the final book written by author Stephanie Meyer, this last and conclusive instalment sees Bella (Stewart) enjoying her new life as a vampire with Edward’s (Pattinson) vampire clan after the birth of their vampire son. That is until an all powerful clan of vampires decide to take action and launch an attack on Bella and her new family.

End of Watch

Here Comes The Boom

Taking its name from a term used by American police officers used to describe someone who has been killed in the line of duty, the film follows recently celebrated L.A.P.D cops Brian Taylor (Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Pena) who are marked for death by a drug cartel after they seize and confiscate a small cache of arms and money. Even though the film was made on a minuscule budget it has taken big bucks in America and been popular with audiences and critics alike.

The latest comedy featuring American star Kevin James, features James playing Scott Voss, a bored high school teacher turned UFC fighter. When Voss discovers his school is in financial trouble, threatening his colleagues' jobs and his students' futures, he turns to the world of Mixed Martial Arts after tutoring one of his failing students. With the hope of being paid to lose, Voss tries to raise enough money to save his school.

15 Dir. David Ayer Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal & Michael Pena.

12A Dir. Frank Coraci Starring: Kevin James & Salma Hayek.

Hero

Spirited Away

Set in the Warring States Period of ancient China, a “Nameless” local policeman (Li) visits the King of Qin, claiming he has killed three wanted assassins, Sky (Yen), Flying Snow (Cheung) and Broken Sword (Leung). The film is structured in a flashback as Nameless recalls his story of how he killed the assassins. The fight scenes are wonderfully choreographed with the acrobatic and artful stylisation characteristic of Chinese cinema. This combined with the stunning camera work make this a visually epic and stunning looking film. The beauty of the film, as well as the enthralling plot full of twists and turns leaves little surprise that at the time of release this was the most expensive and highest grossing in Chinese film history.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar winning anime film is one of the most successful Japanese, let alone animation, films of all time. Shy young girl Chihiro (Hiiragi) is moving and becomes trapped in an alternate world filled with spirits and monsters when her parents are changed into pigs by a mysterious witch (Natsuki). Chihiro strives to save her parents while also freeing the spirit world from the tyrannical witch. The animation is detailed yet charming, the distinctive Japanese anime style lending a great sense of character to the films spirit world. It is fantastical and sometimes strange, featuring magic, monsters and ghosts, the story and characters are grounded in humanity which makes the film moving and wonderful to watch.

12A 2002 Starring: Jet Li, Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung & Donnie Yen

PG 2001 Starring: Rumi Hiiragi, Miyu Irino & Mari Natsuki

BOOK CORNER

CULTURE

BOOK CORNER Literature is full of all sorts of journeys, from straightforward travel writing to more metaphorical voyages. Whilst many who travel are driven by wanderlust, others find themselves taking a journey reluctantly, due to circumstances beyond their control. Whilst we all share anecdotes of fog-bound, connection-missing travel frustration, what we seek in books is what is learned along the way and how life will never be the same again once the journey has come to an end. words | Caroline Mauger

Albotain’s Treasure by Sharon Ward As you might expect from Gallery’s astrologer, Sharon Ward is a highly spiritual person and this shines through her debut novel. Ed, a young man lacking in hope and direction, comes to Guernsey to sort out the possessions hoarded in his late uncle’s house. As Ed and Bert, the gardener, catalogue the artefacts together, Ed is taken on a journey which teaches him about the consequences of living a life dominated by greed, the importance of being open to the existence of other worlds and how to change his own destiny. Written with a light, humorous touch, Sharon’s story is one of love, spiritual awakening and the triumph of good over evil. You’ll definitely learn a thing or two about astrology along the way!

Life of Pi by Yann Martel This classic Man Booker Prize winner was recommended to me years ago but I kept putting off reading it as the synopsis didn’t grab me: a cargo ship sinks and one lifeboat remains afloat containing the only survivors - a 16-year-old boy named Pi, a hyena, a zebra with a broken leg, an orangutan.. and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger. I eventually decided to try it and was instantly hooked. Despite the implausible scenario, this book is beautifully written, funny and amazingly gripping. I loved its quirkiness and the stories of Piscine Molitor Patel (for Pi is named after a Parisian swimming pool) and his family growing up in India. Pi’s voyage has a fable-like quality but you never know, it could just be true.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

The Story of Beautiful Girl by Rachel Simon It is Pennsylvania in 1968 and Martha, a retired schoolteacher, answers a knock on her door. She finds Lynnie and Homan, who have fled the School for the Incurable and Feebleminded with their newborn baby. Homan escapes before the authorities arrive but as the young mother, bound and tied, is taken back to the School she utters two words which will change Martha’s life: ‘Hide her.’ And so begins the 40-year epic journey of Lynnie, Homan, Martha, and baby Julia - lives divided by seemingly insurmountable obstacles, yet drawn together by a secret pact and extraordinary love. This novel does a good job of highlighting the enforced institutionalisation of society’s most vulnerable members in the sixties. It’s one of Richard and Judy’s picks for 2012 – a little saccharine in parts but a pretty good read.

The Road Home by Rose Tremain Lev takes his journey reluctantly. He is 43 and from a small village in Eastern Europe; recently widowed and the sawmill that employed him having closed, he travels to London to seek work, leaving behind daughter Maya, his mother and his outlandish friend Rudi. Lev’s English is basic and London is inhospitable. We follow his agonising progress through exploitation, random kindness, infatuation and continuing grief at the loss of his young wife. Rose Tremain compassionately highlights the difficulties of being poor and exiled; it is impossible not to root for Lev and to empathise with his longing for the home and family he has had to leave. Lev is brave but flawed and his tale is a reminder that every migrant worker has left behind a community in which he or she is not an outsider.

UPDATE The second Guernsey Literary Festival is over, and what a fantastic event it was. We had a really packed programme and tried hard to make sure there was something to appeal for everyone. The big names – Michael Morpurgo, Roger McGough, Carol Ann Duffy, Marina Lewycka and Louis de Bernières – were every bit as engaging as we hoped. It was wonderful to hear the background behind their books and to hear them read their own work. This year we had a business breakfast with financial journalist Hamish McRae, and a number of events which looked into the future of publishing as technology continues to change the way we buy and read books. Workshops were an amazing opportunity for budding writers to get advice and feedback. Matthew Hall advised on structuring crime fiction and William Ryan on historical fiction, whilst Chuma Nwokolo focused on short stories. It was also great to hear from emerging talents like Rosa RankinGee, Jeff Norton and Colin Grant. I hope that, like me, you got a lot out of the Festival and now have a lovely collection of signed books to get stuck into! Thanks to everyone who attended the events, it couldn’t have happened without your support and enthusiasm. We’ll be back in May 2014, but in the meantime Book Corner will continue, thanks to the fantastic feedback we’ve had from so many of you bookworms.

Tell us a bit about yourself and “The Worlds End” From a young age, I have always been interested in fine art and creative pursuits. I started working locally as a Tattoo Artist six years ago and this year the opportunity arose for me to set up my own tattoo shop. When it came to naming my business, it seemed fitting to call it “The Worlds End” given that the Mayan calendar predicts that the world will come to an end this year. Some have interpreted this prediction to mean that 2012 will bring the start of a new era so I thought it would be interesting to set up my shop under this name and see what happens.

Why did you choose to be a tattoo artist? I’ve always been passionate about drawing and sketching so moving into tattoo art was a natural progression. I wanted to do something with my artwork as a profession and being a tattoo artist allows me to do this. It took 2 years to train; I started out part-time working two jobs until I had established a substantial client base and gained enough experience that I could do this job full-time.

Is it challenging to get creative when clients request designs that do not appeal to your favourite style? I love tattooing people so regardless of the design that a client wants, I will find it enjoyable to work on their tattoo. The most fulfilling tattoos are the ones I have designed myself after discussing with the client what they want.

Every artist has his own style, how would you describe yours? Do you take your inspiration from other tattoo artists or from other mediums? There isn’t a formal title for my style; I work on so many different types of tattoos that officially labelling my style is difficult. I like black and grey realist tattoo work and any designs that are really complex, intricate and detailed – those are the pieces that I enjoy working on the most as they allow me to be really creative. Inspiration can come from anywhere at anytime. Tattoo Artists such as Jeff Gogue, Shige and Carlos Torres are the artists I aspire to most.

How does it feel to watch people’s reactions when you see them checking out their new tattoo in the mirror? I’ve seen a range of reactions from my clients over the years, some people get so excited when they see their finished tattoo and for others, having a tattoo isn’t a big deal for them. It is always rewarding to have personally designed a tattoo with my own artwork and then to see the client really pleased with the result.

Where do you see your future? Assuming the world doesn’t come to a halt at the end of 2012, I am looking forward to building on my new business and seeing where that takes me. The joy of being a Tattoo Artist is that it is a job you can do anywhere in the world so I am not dependant on staying in Guernsey for the rest of my career. No-one knows what the future has in store for them but I am really pleased to have been able to start up my own shop here and want to build on my existing client base.

In recent years, the trend has definitely changed from a minority with tattoos to a fast growing tattoo culture. What do you think has brought about this change? I think a number of factors have caused this. One of the biggest influences has been the rise in reality TV shows like Miami Ink. Tattoos are something that we frequently see in the media, with many high profile celebrities getting inked and publicising their new ink. The technology behind the tattoo equipment has evolved too, even down to the range of colours and the types of ink available that have greater longevity than the ink that was used 20 years ago. As it becomes more and more acceptable to have a tattoo, irrespective of your gender or profession, people are more exposed to seeing all sorts of tattoo designs on people from all walks of life, which in turn leads to more people signing up for a tattoo of their own.

In a place like Guernsey with such a small population, the percentage of people that you have tattooed here must be pretty high! How many tattoos have you done locally? Thousands and thousands! I cannot give you an exact number – there have literally been thousands of them. If you could tattoo anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? William Shatner

Ellie Spafford is a Guernsey-born artist, currently based on-island. Her focus is visual arts, and she can often be found with the GAC’s Community Arts Team covered in paint! ‘…I immediately committed to several group shows, and curated an exhibition for international graduates in Guernsey. However, like many graduates, I found myself missing the huge group studio where we would all bounce ideas off each other, and it was hard to produce much work in the first few months. IN THIS SHOW AT THE GREENHOUSE, THE GUERNSEY ARTS COMMISSION IS TAKING A LOOK AT 6 OF THE BEST ARTWORKS FROM GUERNSEY SCHOOLS’ 2012 FINAL YEAR SHOWS. THE SELECTED WORKS COME FROM THE DIVERSE ART COURSES DELIVERED ACROSS THE ISLAND’S FURTHER EDUCATION ESTABLISHMENTS. 6 OF THE BEST is an exhibition of local students’ work which showcases the best of the Grammar School, Elizabeth College, Ladies’ College, and the College of Further Education end of year shows. These include works by Flo Le Couteur, Joel Lewis, Harry Martel, Joshua Moore, Harry Stephens and Brad Sumner. Spanning a wide range of arts disciplines from clay work to woodwork and sculpture, images of New York City in acrylic paint on canvas to charcoal on wood the process offers Guernsey students a chance to display their work to a different audience and experience being involved in an exhibition, many for the first time outside the confines of their schools. The content of the exhibition involved going to as many of the Final Year Shows, through June and July 2012, as possible. In the pursuit of fairness the selection process took into consideration the quality of the work, the presentation, and the development shown from each student’s supporting material. For the students, this exhibition is an opportunity to develop their understanding about how what they create ‘fits’ with the rest of the world around them, and how displaying a piece in a different context could have a dramatic effect on it's meaning. All of the six selected have shown a good understanding of their chosen medium, after viewing all the work, narrowing it down to just 6 students made the decision very hard! The exhibition runs from Thursday 20th September at the greenhouse and is a chance for everyone to find out what the students’ inspirations were and what they are planning to do with their talents in the future.

OPENING HOURS: MON TO SAT 9am – 5pm SUN 9am – 1pm FROM THE 1ST OCTOBER: MON TO FRI 9am – 5pm SAT 9am – 1pm SUNDAY CLOSED Exhibition runs until Saturday 17th November 2012

YELLOWISM

THE OBSCURE MOVEMENT BEHIND THE TATE ROTHKO ATTACK

Y

ellowism is not art, and Yellowism isn't anti-art, it's an element of contemporary visual culture. It's not an artistic movement. It's not art, it's not reality, it's just Yellowism. The main difference between Yellowism and art is that in art you have freedom of interpretation, in Yellowism you don't, everything is about Yellowism.

If the founders of Yellowism - Russianborn Umanets and his partner Marcin Łodyga display an object or work of art in a “yellowism” exhibition or tag it with the movement’s name, they believe it becomes part of the movement. No matter what. Its significance as anything beyond a work of “yellowism” is summarily erased. While Duchamp appropriated a urinal and, with his signature, created a work of art, Umanets believes any existing work of art can be transformed into a work of Yellowism by adding his own signature. In Yellowism, all the possible interpretations are reduced to one — are equalized, flattened to yellow. The movement supposedly began on November 15, 2010 in Giza, Egypt, where the duo unveiled their first exhibition, “Flattened to Yellow.” Little is known about the venue except its address: 15 Damascus Street. Photos of the exhibition show a yellow room with the words “Jamon Jamon” painted on one wall (the name of a sexy early Penelope Cruz movie) and a large wooden panel painted yellow and red, identified as “First Yellowistic Form (North Africa Version).” In May of last year, they organized their third exhibition, “No One Lives Forever,” at a former brewery in London. The show

advertised work by YBA Damien Hirst, Polish artist Mirosław Bałka, and designer Neville Brody, according to its website. A YouTube video associated with the exhibition shows Umanets and Lodyga signing their names on a projector screen, which would later present Balka’s film “B”- presumably claiming the work for Yellowism. According to the text accompanying the video, “Bałka's film 'B' in this particular case for the first time was considered as a pure expression of a yellow colour only." The Rothko defacement notwithstanding, the reality of Yellowism seems a bit more mundane than its heavy-handed rhetoric would suggest. One YouTube video on the group’s channel captures Umanets and his partner installing a run-of-themill art exhibition in a yellow room. (In order to be subsumed into Yellowism, artworks must either be displayed in a yellowistic chamber - a non-traditional gallery space painted yellow - or signed by a Yellowist.) Another video, titled “ H u n g r y yellowists,” features the two men eating at McDonald’s. In general, their movement shows an adolescent obsession with vandalism and attractive women - at least one of their videos is simply an appropriated slow-mo clip of Russian swimsuit models. (The first Yellowist exhibition in Giza was subtitled "Natalia Vodianova Yellowistic Chamber," referring to a famous Russian beauty; "No One Lives Forever" was subtitled "Carmen Kass Yellowistic Chamber," referring to an Estonian beauty model.)

TRENCH DEEP, PLATEAU HIGH RICK JONES

T

he urge to hot-foot it to somewhere other than where you started is nothing new. The oldest tales in history or even religious faux-history all seem to centre around travel. Likewise many treasures, songs and works of art all seem to have that much more gravitas if they come from somewhere far, far away. Mass exoduses, diasporas and wanderings are the the stuff of stories from the bible to beowulf, from The Grapes of Wrath to Gulliver’s...well, Travels. It stands to reason that this would inspire adventurous or entrepreneurial young minds to seek out the furthest flung corners of the world, but the presence of strangers in strange lands tends to bring a whole set of new woes to the lands in question. It’s not long before ‘alien’ diseases and invasive hitch-hiker animal species - rats being the classic example - start to come along for the ride, themselves afflicted with a wanderlust and possessing a dangerousto-the-environment adaptability much like our own. Inevitably, before long what seemed like a paradise is just another tourist spot, or worse - somewhere to exploit and sometimes literally ‘strip-mine’ for resources. Paradoxically, when somewhere is prized for its natural beauty, it tends to get overrun by visitors and loaded up with commercial businesses. As the truly natural spots get progressively rarer, more people visit them... And so the cycle continues. Think on this... Less than 10% of the world’s land is more than 48 hours from the nearest city. Honestly, and we’re talking land travel only. Trains, cars or donkeys. Scary huh? No

18 36

matter where you go, civilisation is only two days away. Given the above information, it means that ‘remote’ is becoming a thing of the past, and critically, we are only probably a couple of days away from screwing up any remaining pristine natural areas. The Amazon Rainforest is pretty well connected - rivers help - and most deserts have a road network these days.

It happens to be surrounded by massive mountain ranges, and the only ‘rain’ is hailstones, but there are some redeeming features. The Tibetan Plateau contains the world’s third-largest store of ice, after the polar regions. Perfect for that sneaky pear cider... If climate change doesn’t thoughtfully create a giant rooftop swimming pool before you get there!

All this leads me to wondering, what next? Technology is leaping ahead of where most of us could have ever imagined, so, just where will the age-old and inherent human ‘wanderlust’ and urge to visit the unknown take us, when we have been, known and in turn influenced ‘everywhere’?

Outer Space The final frontier? Well, supposedly, space is infinite... that doesn’t strike me as very final, having no end and all. But still, space flight is becoming ever more viable, and there’s about every kind of possibility ‘out there’.

Here’s a few ideas that seem to be in the pipeline already! ‘Challenger Deep’ - The Mariana Trench Situated at the very bottom of the western Pacific Ocean, to the east of the Mariana Islands, the Mariana Trench is a narrow but almost unimaginably - if not unfathomably - deep ‘slot’ in the seabed. With an average width of a suggestive 69 kilometres, it’s already sounding slightly wrong by my description... Sure to attract the 18-30’s crowd then. But, be warned, its not quite Ibiza... The very deepest part is known as ‘Challenger Deep’ and is dark, wet and under massive pressure, which kind of sounds like the Welsh valleys during January. So if technology allows, we could create a modern Atlantis for future generations to visit. Twinned with Pontypridd, naturally. The Tibetan Plateau (Qingzang) In complete contrast to the aforementioned Mariana Trench, this 2.5million kilometre elevated land mass is often called ‘the roof of the world’. Roof parties are often the stuff of legend, so why haven’t the hedonists headed to the hills quite yet, you ask?

Sun worshipper? Guess what, you could actually ‘go there’. It would seem popular, as no traveller would ever return home. I’ve heard that said about Jersey in the 1990’s though. Just saying. Winter break? Mars, Mercury and Neptune are all frozen gas planets. Get’cya ski on, cosmic style - it’s time to buy that North Face parka that you figured you’d never be cold enough to need! Even colder, and with a name and nature that suggest ‘where the sun don’t shine’, we have the seventh planet, Uranus. I’d like to avoid the tasteless jokes, but it does, according to my research, have a complicated planetary ring system. I guess if there was a divine creator, he liked it, and took Beyonce’s advice. If it’s good enough for a deity who can go wherever he pleases, then perhaps we should see if we can go there. Unfortunately, with humans track record of planetary responsibility it’s highly likely that we’ll f**k it anyway.

THE TIME WE WALKED UP THE VOLCANO

Words | Martine Ellis

SHARING THE WANDERLUST Once upon a time, not that long ago, one of the most important items on a traveller’s packing list would have been a camera, along with rolls, and rolls, of camera film. Back then using a camera to document your travels was a risky business. What if you didn’t get any decent shots? What if you lost a roll of film? Those precious travel memories could so easily be destroyed. How times have changed. Today it’s easy to document and share your travel experience with anyone you choose. In fact, you don’t even need a camera…

GREAT PHONEOGRAPHY WEBSITES

Phoneography, or the Apple version, iPhoneography, is the art of shooting, processing and sharing photographs with a mobile phone. The image quality and resolution achievable with a camera phone has improved dramatically and this, combined with the availability of hundreds of photography applications (known as ‘apps’), has seen the phoneography trend grow rapidly. Even professional photographers, who generally weren’t early adopters of phoneography, appear to be embracing it’s potential. Phoneography has a number of advantages over regular photography, particularly for travellers. A mobile phone takes up considerably less room than a DSLR camera, lenses, tripod and other photography equipment. Also, photographs can be shared at the touch of a button with social networks, including photography-specific websites such as Flickr and Photobucket. Photography apps enable users to edit their photographs extensively and apply a wide variety of filters and frames. So your travel snaps aren’t just easy to share; they look good too!

Die-hard photography fans might argue that phoneography, in particular, apps such as Instagram, are the death of real photography. I disagree. Phoneography and apps are just additional tools for the hobbyist, and professional, photographer. What is the point of taking a beautiful photograph, capturing everything that was special about your travel experience, if nobody else sees it? Through phoneography, apps and social media, you can share your travel experience, in real-time, with whomever you like.

SILK ROAD

TRAVEL

Words | Nathan White The Silk Road is becoming vastly more popular among western travellers through the growing availability of books and even because of its history alone. Contrary to its name it is not a road, nor is it made of silk. It is rather an across land route used for trading goods. The trade route is an inhospitable region of land which separates China from Europe and western Asia. A large section of this arid land is in Xinjiang above Tibet forming the Taklimakan desert. The Taklimakan is renowned for its land moving sands and is noted by the infamous Marco Polo stating that it is filled with daemons and strange nocturnal noises. The trading route was in use as far back as 200 B.C and more than likely even older than that. There was a plethora of products to barter for that changed depending on the country connection point along the trading route. The European connection would have items such as wine, salt, woven goods and cultured metal work. The west Asian connection would bring materials like Jade, lapis lazuli and crystal. You could even buy a camel or a dog and a horse if you’re lucky. The Asian connection brought some of the most sought after items such as gold or silver and the item which all of the richest men were looking for, the silk. From being obsolete and in isolation for centuries, interest from the west has sparked enthusiasm for people to embark on a Marco Polo type travelling experience. To qualify yourself for this type of travelling you will need to be highly resolute and attain a level of imprudence if you are going through some of the Middle Eastern countries. These are the countries notorious for armed intervention from the west and so your time here will be laid low and quick. Normally the journey would start in China and end shortly before Xinjiang as this area is known for nuclear weapons testing. There have been accounts of westerners doing the whole route through Afghanistan to Syria where there was a marine connection to Europe but this brings you a bit too close to Iraq for comfort. This route has only been taken by some of the most judicious of travellers either journalists or academics. They will also be accompanied by local translators where they then have access to the local people and their language. Here they will be able to use cunning and trade commodities for a guide who will show them the most secure passage far from any conflict.

on at the BBC office. On reaching the office he realised that one of the reporters was interviewing one of the local war lords as a war had recently broken out in exactly the place he wanted to go. “Well we’re having a bit of a confrontation with Atan Ahamed”, his rival, “we’re negotiating for peace but he’s not being very helpful” said General Abdulla Astum, the local warlord, and meanwhile in the back ground you could hear machine gun fire as he was talking. Almost one hour later a dialog was opened with Atan Ahmad to ask how thing were going with General Astum. “Well General Astum is being a little bit difficult...”and still in the background the faint sound of gun fire. Colin had to delay his expedition for a year due to conflict in this area. He originally started his travels on the first part of the Silk Road through the Middle East in 2003 and had to delay until 2004. As of 1970 the Chinese government have realised that capital can be generated from tourism and have largely tried to excavate large portions of the key connections on the old Silk Road. Just before Xinjiang you will be able to visit the Astana tombs. This is where the people of the city of Gaochang were buried and significant findings have been made to show what it was like to live on the road back in the day. Following the road west and arriving at the Taklimakan desert is where some of the most diverse things are found, like the thirteen different races of people. Some of the ancient grottos and cities from the road can send you back in time to how it must have been to live with a system of bartering and grandiose journeys. If you have an interest in archaeology then this is the place to be. If you can find yourself to the mysterious city of Kashgar they still use the system of bartering at the Sunday markets which maintain much of the roads spirit. Here you will find some exotic spices and woven wool, livestock or silver knives. Defined over generations of great dynasties this road was in use supplying china with products up until six to seven hundred years ago. This road enabled man and cultures to spread far beyond the boundaries of each of the continents. It brought political relations and grew economies. It marked the development of civilisation itself and could never have happened without the Great Road.

Colin Thubron’s account before his decent into Afghanistan was that he went to Tashkent the capitol of Uzbekistan to see what was going

While you’re in Paris,

SILENCIO

HAVE A DRINK AND A DANCE IN DAVID LYNCH’S NIGHTCLUB

Silencio is the first ever nightspot to be opened by Twin Peaks, Eraserhead and Blue Velvet director David Lynch. Those familiar with his career will be aware that Mr. Lynch has long had a penchant for doing the last thing expected of him (see the ‘David Lynch Weather Report’ webisodes or his 2011 cinematic surf guitar-cum-electronica album Crazy Clown Time), and who would have expected him to open up a club in the heart of artists’ mecca Rue Montmartre? Named after the club in Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, Silencio features a maze of intimate rooms, including a bar, restaurant, art gallery, 24seat cinema and concert room. For the full experience you’ll have to part with a €1,000 membership fee, but the club is open to all after midnight. The décor, the music and the general ambience combine to produce an experience not unlike, one imagines, having a party inside David Lynch’s brain; who wouldn’t want to try that?

PARISIAN CATACOMBS GOING UNDERGROUND…

One of the unique things about Paris is its huge network of underground tunnels, sewers and caves – 180 miles of them to be precise. Throughout the middle ages, Paris’ cemeteries suffered atrocious overcrowding, until the skeletal remains of 6 million Parisians were transferred to tunnels originally dug as gypsum quarries. What now exists is a beautifully macabre tribute to the dead, femurs and skulls lining the tunnel walls and ceilings. Throughout the 20th Century especially, there has been a culture of ‘catephiles’; artists, hedonists and supposed sects who have illegally entered parts of these subterranean crypts to hold parties and exhibitions – in 2004, a mysterious fully-equipped cinema was discovered there. There are legitimate ways to explore the tunnels though, namely through the Catacombs Museum. Thoroughly recommended.

PARIS FLEA MARKET SHOPPING IN ST OUEN?

Located at Porte de Cligancourt is Paris’ most famous flea market, Les Puces de Saint-Ouen. Covering seven hectares, comprised of 2,000 shops and attracting 120,000 – 180,000 visitors per weekend, it’s in fact the world’s biggest antiques market, but shoppers can find anything from toys to

vintage clothing, obscure books to trinkets, kitchenware to furniture. You name it, one market trader or another will have it, and will be willing to haggle over a price. The history of the market dates back 200 years, when ‘crochetuers’ (‘pickers’) – rag & bone men to you and I – would sell junk found in Paris bins from pop-up stalls set up within the Paris walls. The market has come a long way since; even France’s most famous designer Phillipe Starck is in on the act, having last month opened a restaurant and stall there.

CLOS MONTMARTRE SUBURBAN VINEYARD

Yes, we’re back in Montmartre again. When you think of French vineyards, Bordeaux and Burgundy tend to be the first names that spring to mind. However, nestled in the hilly Parisian bohemia that is Montmartre is Paris’ last remaining vineyard. The area was once covered in vineyards, but the increasing urbanisation destroyed all but this one of them. Bordered by the public Musee de Montmartre and the famous Lapin Agile cabaret club – once frequented by Renoir and Picasso – Close Montmartre is closed to the public except for during the annual Fete des Jardins. The festival is one of only three ways to purchase wine from the vineyard; the other two are by either buying a mini bottle from the Montmartre tourism office or from occasional charity wine auctions, which are invite only. RED LIGHT DISTRICT TOUR THE CIVILISED WAY TO LEARN ABOUT BROTHELS, PIMPS AND PROSTITUTES

As one of the only cities in Europe that allows legally licensed prostitution, Amsterdam has had a long history of visitors flocking to see its famous Red Light District. One of the most lasting images for any visitor to the area is that of rows of windows displaying active sex workers available for business. In 1994 the Prostitution Information Centre was set up to educate workers and public and to improve the working conditions of prostitutes in the city. The Information Centre runs the De Wallenwinkel Red Light District Store, which operates tours around the area twice a week. Led by a former prostitute, the tours give an insight into the history of the area and a glimpse at the many brothels, peep shows, strip clubs and sex shops in the area. Not a trip for the prudish, that’s for sure.

SEX MUSEUM

A FRUITY WAY TO LEARN ABOUT THE BIRDS AND THE BEES

They say sex sells, and don’t the owners of the “Venustempel” know it, the museum attracting around 500,000 visitors per year. Opened in 1985, the museum is a shrine to all things erotic, with artefacts, paintings and photography depicting sexual attitudes

throughout the ages, from the randy Ancient Greeks to the joyless priests of the Middle Ages. An impressive range of exhibits from all over the globe, from ancient phallic stone statuettes to Victorian paintings of mucky business, demonstrate that a fascination with carnal activities is most definitely not just a modern phenomoneon.

HASH MUSEUM

ROLL UP FOR THE MYSTERY TOUR

Located at the Oudezijds Achterburgwal, a canal of the Red Light District, the Hash, Marijuana and Hemp Museum is actually two small museums for the price of one, set within walking distance of one another. With artefacts and literature illustrating the history of hemp as a plant used by man for textiles over thousands of years, and more modern exhibits such as vaporisers and bongs, as well as a live cannabis garden, displaying man’s love affair with getting completely stoned out of its head, the museum offers a broad look at a plant which has had a bearing on history in more ways than one. Educational and informative, and my mate swears blind he went in there fine and walked out zonked from the fumes.

Amsterdam Tattoo Museum is a celebration of an art form which has a tendency to divide opinion, but which has made an indelible mark (yes, pun intended, many thanks) on human history. With displays of primitive and modern tattooing techniques and implements – including the gruesome but often weirdly beautiful scarification and branding practices – as well as live gigs and exhibitions from guests artists, the museum is both informative and a lot of fun. You can even get a tattoo from Henk there – and sign up to donate your inked skin to the museum when you die. If that’s not selfsufficient museumery, what is?

HEINEKEN EXPERIENCE

LIKE WILLY WONKA’S CHOCOLATE FACTORY, BUT FOR GROWN MEN

Like Heineken? Like experiences? Then you’ll ruddy love the Heineken Experience, set in the company’s 1867-built brewery, now converted into a visitor’s centre. See the historic brew room, sit back and enjoy the frankly bizarre ‘Brew U’ 4D simulator (which lets guests experience the sensation of being brewed and bottled), get your own personalised Heineken, enjoy interactive shows, crush barley and get generally excited about Heineken. If you missed out on going to a theme park as a kid and feel you might have missed the boat, then perhaps the Heineken Experience is just the catharsis you need.

THE TIME WE WALKED UP THE VOLCANO

words | Foo Pearson

I WAS ONLY TWENTY WHEN I CAUGHT THE BUG. IT WAS THE EARLY 90S AND EVERYONE WAS DOING IT, SO AFTER JUST TWO YEARS OF GROWN UP FULL TIME EMPLOYMENT IN A BANK, I QUIT MY JOB AND TOOK OFF TRAVELLING FOR SIX MONTHS. I spent my 21st birthday on a beach in Goa and then spent the next six years contract working in Guernsey for the summer and flying away for the winter. The trip that sticks most in my mind was my last jaunt - to Bali – mainly because my memory ain’t what it was, but also because I realised I quite liked luxury, and after all the years of bumming about, I was finally ready to come home and hang up my rucksack for a while. Our Balinese adventure began with my buddy Linzi and I kicking back on Kuta beach, soaking up the sunshine and scouting surf shops for cool threads. Next we moved onto a magical Monkey Forest in Ubud and shared our balcony with a bunch of brazen Macaca monkeys. One night, whilst relaxing in a restaurant, we were approached by a rotund little dude named Bello, who swaggered over and waxed lyrical to us about how he did tours and such.

42

Before we knew it, we had signed up for a sunrise trek of Mount Batur Volcano, and were to be collected from our digs at 3am the next morning. We hot-footed it home at once for some shut eye. A few hours later, we found ourselves at the foot of this mountain and we began our ascent to the summit. We’d been moving for approximately an hour when I was suddenly overwhelmed with nausea and my vision became impaired by big black spots before my eyes. “It must be the altitude” I spluttered, hanging onto a sparse tree branch, as Linzi clambered over to comfort me, stifling her sniggers at my situation. Thankfully the moment passed pretty quickly and we carried on climbing. It took about another two hours to get there, but when we did… WOW. The views quite took our breath away. On a total high in every sense of the word, we congratulated each other on our achievement and then breakfasted like kings on hot tea and eggs which were boiled in the volcanic steam. All too soon it was time to leave, so as sure-footed as feral goats, we made our way back down to base - very eager to get home and horizontal for an impressively long snooze. I’d recommend to anyone to wander with lust - anywhere in the world, and for any time at all, because to quote Don Juan (and being a Bohemian back then, I often did): “You must assume responsibility for being here, in this marvellous world, in this marvellous desert, in this marvellous time. You must learn to make every act count, since you are going to be here for only a short while, in fact, too short for witnessing all the marvels of it.”

M I L L E N N I U M T VÅ AND SWEDEN’S ICEHOTEL Between 1999 and 2000 I lived in Uppsala, Sweden. I was there studying literature at Uppsala Universitet through an exchange programme with Glendon College in Toronto. I actually applied to England’s Keele University, but the exchange programmers asked if I would go to Sweden instead since I had already lived in England and no one had signed up for Sweden. I said, why not. A bit of history on Uppsala. It’s actually quite an interesting city, with a storied past. Uppsala is the fourth-largest city in Sweden, with a population of approximately 150,000. Located 40 minutes outside Stockholm, it has been the ecclesiastical centre of Sweden since 1164 (before this, it was the pagan centre of Sweden) and is the seat of the Archbishop of the Church of Sweden. When I lived there, over 80% of the Swedish population belonged to the Church of Sweden, which is Lutheran. But Swedes are not an overly-religious people. The Swedish mentality on pretty much any subject is medel: not too much, not too little. They love the middle ground, and dislike rocking the boat. Gamla Uppsala or Old Uppsala is the original location of the city of Uppsala, just a bit north from where the modern centre sits now. In the well-documented Days of Yore, the Kings of Sweden were based in Gamla Uppsala. It is an archeologically-rich area, with Norse burial mounds and an important role in Scandinavian history. Uppsala Universitet, founded in 1477 and considered the “Oxford of Northern Europe,” is the oldest university in Scandinavia. When the time came for me to end my exchange, I had to go to the Stockholm-Arlanda Airport to pick up my ticket home. I brought with me a small backpack containing a toque, camera, The Rough Guide to Sweden, and sleeve of crackers – more than enough to survive the train ride to Sweden’s capital city. However, I didn’t exactly come back as directly as I arrived. My flight to Canada was in two days, and I felt like I wanted to see some more of Sweden before I left. So, after I picked up my ticket from the Air Canada booth, I checked the Scandanavian Airlines listing for their next inter-Sweden flights. SAS offered special fares for students travelling within the country; around $40 for a one-way flight anywhere in the country. I wanted to go see the Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, and the next flight to Gällivare (as close as you could fly to the hotel) wasn’t for another four hours. So I figured I could jump on a short-haul flight and get back to Stockholm-Arlanda in time for the Gällivare flight. The next plane out was headed to the island of Gotland, south-east of Stockholm in the Baltic Sea. I thought, why not, and booked myself a ticket. Gotland’s tätort or locality of Visby is a former Viking site, and one of the best preserved Medieval cities in Scandinavia. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this walled city was the main centre of the Hanseatic League from the 12th to 14th Centuries. After wandering around the city for 45 minutes (enough time BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

to see it, trust me), I switched planes back at Stockholm-Arlanda and boarded the Gällivare-bound SAS flight. Luckily I had my Rough Guide, because the crackers were almost gone, and the toque was definitely not going to give me any direction. I found the Youth Hostel listings and got myself a dorm bed in a cabin near the Vassara River. By the time I arrived the sun had set. Well, that was expected considering the winter sun set at 3pm in Uppsala and I was now above the Arctic Circle. I hopped in a cab and gave him the address of the Hostel. As we drove past snowy fields and woods, my cabbie pointed out a dull green glow on the horizon, insisting it was the Northern Lights. He also insisted that I must know NHL legend Mats Sundin since I was from Toronto. Finally we arrived at the Youth Hostel, which in the dark appeared to be in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, and was completely deserted. My key was left in the office mailbox, and I had to convince the driver that it was okay for him to abandon me. He was quite concerned for the welfare of a Canadian 21-yr-old potential girlfriend of Sweden’s national hockey hero. Before I went to bed, I stepped outside into the middle-of-nowhere snow, looked up at the clear sky with its full moon, and listened to the eerie howl of wolves in the distance. Surreal.

Not as scary in the daylight. And the hostel wasn’t actually in the middle of nowhere, but just behind the train station. So I walked into town and took a train further north to Kiruna, past endless snowy fields and forests with no trace of humanity in sight. And from Kiruna I took a bus to Jukkasjärvi, the town in which the Icehotel is found. Erected anew each year in December, Sweden’s Icehotel opened in 1990. It’s basically a giant igloo made out of snow and ice blocks taken from the nearby Torne River, and features a bar, chapel, main hall, reception area, and suites for over 100 guests. The beds are made of ice, as are the tables and chairs, chapel pews, and even the glasses used in the Absolut Icebar. For those not brave enough to weather the -5°C temperature, heated cabins are available outside the igloo as well. I only had time to spend a couple hours inside the hotel, sipping some chilled Absolut out of an ice glass, chat with the staff (who were mainly backpacking students from other countries), imagine what I’d wear if I got married in the icy chapel (lots of Sami fur), and hop on the bus back to Kiruna. Then I took another bus to the Kallax airport in Luleå for my flight back to Stockholm, as I had to head home to Toronto the next day. While I was in Sweden, I also ushered in the dawn of the 21st Century with a great outdoor fest (party) in Stockholm, hosted by the King and Queen. And at midnight on December 31st 1999, retro rock band Europe performed “The Final Countdown.” Millenium Två!

MY CRUSH IS LIKE A SQUASHED PEACH ON SUN BAKED TARMAC, ALL SQUISHY AND EXPOSED. MY DAYDREAMS ARE ALL LILAC SKIES AND LOST HIGHWAYS. MY THOUGHTS ARE ALL OPEN ROAD. ALL OF MY SUMMER DRESSES ARE LINED UP WITH THEIR BACKS TO THE WARDROBE. I SLEEP IN MY SUITCASE, MY ARMS AND LEGS ARE FOLDED, READY, WAITING. I CLOSE MY EYES AND A WORLD UNRAVELS. THE HOUSE LIFTS UP, ROTATES AND SPINS AWAY FROM THE GROUND FALLING DEEP INTO A PASSING CYCLONE AND I AM GONE. I AM FALLING LIKE A PEACH AND I HIT THE ROAD. I AM ON THE ROAD, A KIND OF CLEMENTINE BRICK ROAD AND ALL I CAN HEAR AROUND THE BLURRED EDGES OF THIS SCENE IS ‘GYSPY’ BY FLEETWOOD MAC. If time is like a Möbius strip then maybe an album can be a place and a country singer can be a colour. There are no hard limits in dreams. All of your heart’s desires are laid bare, like a dream within a dream. I tumble down a well. I fall deep into a long night out of time, all out of kilter with what is real and what is waiting to happen. I wake up behind the wheel of my 1967 Chevy Impala, sprayed Johnny Cash Black, all leopard print interior. The engine sounds like the opening chords of Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ when you start her up. Hitched to the back bar is my 1964 Bambi Airstream Wanderer. We roll out. We ride along the highway, taking in still blue skies and desert air. We don’t know where we are, we don’t know where we’re going but we know that we’re on vacation, this feels like a long weekend. All sense of time and reason fall behind us, we adjust the rearview mirror so that we can see the weight of our ties to reality disappear. When the Chevy goes over 60mph she’s all ‘Kashmir’ chords and rifts below the bonnet, it’s soothing and we unwind, the car and I, we are on the road. A kind of dusty orange road, and all I can hear is ‘Whole Lotta Love’ coming out of the radio or the engine, or both. We drop anchor at Beth Orton’s ‘Trailer Park’. I think the trailer park is haunted so we will only stay one night. I lie on the roof of the Bambi

46

and watch the Perseids fall through the night sky, diving through the Northern lights, casting wishes on all of the pretty shooting stars. After the meteorite show and the air has cooled, I find my soapy scented bathwater crumpled ten year old copy of Tolstoy’s ‘Anna Karenina’ and make snow angels across the pages before sleep. The sun surprises my eyelids open. The car and the trailer are parked in a garage, somewhere in another town somewhere I have never been. I drove all night and my limbs are heavy. What moves me out of the room and into the waking, working world is the memory of being on the road, away from all of this, absent, lost and gone along an unknown highway. All of my summer dresses are waiting to be taken, I know they feel the same. I have a crush on abandoning all off this and taking off, with a kitsch and vintage trailer in tow. I will leave town one day and this is how I’ll go. This is what keeps me awake at work. However squished and squashed the waking world throws this, this dream is all that I know.

PUT YOUR BEST FACE FORWARD An hour to get ready in the morning? The bathroom all to yourself so you can take your time? Most of us don’t have the luxury of time so a multi-step skin care routine is not a morning option, but the new multi-tasking moisturisers from award-winning skincare brand, Dermalogica, offers the perfect solution. Most of us wouldn’t leave the house without moisturiser, but sunscreen is a different matter, unless we’re on holiday or the rain actually stops and the sun comes out. Dermalogica, however, believes that daily sun protection is essential every day of the year and by combining SPF with targeted moisturisers it has ensured that you will have the protection you need without adding time to your morning routine. Oil Free Matte SPF30, Ultra Sensitive Tint SPF30 and Super Sensitive Shield SPF30 all contain UV smart booster technology. Research shows that antioxidant vitamins are as important as sunscreens when defending the skin from damaging UV rays and free radicals. What distinguishes Dermalogica from other skin care ranges is the recognition that your skin is as individual as you are. Dermalogica products use highly active ingredients, are not animal tested - and they work.

ROM THE CHIC PHARMACIES OF FRANCE TO THE ICONIC AMERICAN DEPARTMENT STORES, CHECKING OUT LOCAL BRANDS IS HALF THE FUN OF TRAVELLING FOR THE COMMITTED BEAUTY HOUND. THERE ARE NEW, CULT PRODUCTS TO BE DISCOVERED AND COVETABLE MAKE-UP TO TREASURE. LUCKILY, LOCAL BOUTIQUES AND ONLINE EMPORIUMS ARE BRINGING BEAUTY HOME AND MANY OF THESE INTERNATIONAL BRANDS ARE NOW AVAILABLE IN THE UK. HERE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE BEST BEAUTY NAMES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Australia

Australia has a wealth of home-grown brands including the multitasking Lucas Paw Paw ointment and Jurlique which grows its own organic ingredients on a biodynamic farm in South Australia. Another plant-based collection is Aesop, we love the pared down aesthetic and simple but effective natural formulations. Try the Parsley Seed range which is packed with potent antioxidants to slow down the signs of ageing. You’d expect the Aussies to know a thing or two about sun protection and Invisible Zinc has gathered many plaudits since its launch in the UK last year. Lightweight but highly protective zinc-based sunscreens sound good to us, any time of the year.

South Africa

Environ was one of the first cosmeceutical skincare brands to bring the anti-ageing benefits of vitamin A to a wider audience. Created by a South African plastic surgeon, it can now be found in skincare clinics all over the world.

Dubai

Meaning ‘healing’ in Arabic, Shiffa is Dubai’s best-selling skin and body care brand. Created within a male dominated business world by Dr Lamees Hamden, she harnessed exotic ingredients such as South East Asian tamanu and Indian amber to create a luxurious yet natural skincare collection.

France

Head straight to Sephora for their brilliant own-label skincare as well as long list of brand names that are full of the promise of a more gorgeous future; we love their mini-sizes for travelling too. Another favourite is perfume brand Lostmarc’h which is named after the last beach in continental Europe. Their scents are evocative of the Brittany countryside; try Din Dan with head notes of lemon and verbena and a heart and base of mint and peach.

Korea

Eborian draws upon traditional Korean herbal medicine to stimulate the microcirculation of the skin. Korean Red Ginseng, Yuza, Ginger, Chestnut extract, Green Plum, Liquorice extract and Ginko Biloba can all be found in their serums, elixirs and cleansers. Their signature ingredient can also be found in the BB Cream which has stayed true to the original blemish balm concept of combining treatment ingredients with skin perfecting make-up.

Japan

Shinso mean ‘deeper layer’ in Japanese and this three-product lineup promises to go to work in the deeper dermal layers of the skin to rejuvenate and restore a youthful glow. With 70 Japanese herbs and botanical ingredients, two Noble Prize-winning discoveries and a host of celebrity fans, the Shinso Essence promises to leave your skin peachy. If you find yourself in the land of the rising sun, Japanese drugstores will provide rich-pickings, from oil-free blotting papers to facial exercise masks and nose straightening gadgets.

America

Most of America’s big beauty names make it across the pond but there are still enough exclusives and niche brands to get globehopping shoppers excited. Edward Bess started out his career as a model but in a moment of inspiration he decided to create a line of lipsticks that would suit all women. Eyeshadows, foundations and cheek colours followed and now his range sells in Bergdorff Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Sephora.

United Kingdom

Mōa or The Green Balm is like a first aid kit in one tiny pot. Cuts, bruises, shave rash, spots, dry skin, eczema, dry cuticles, mosquito bites...rub a little of this all-natural herbal ointment into sore spots and you’ll soon feel a whole lot better.

A TIME FOR CHANGE

A Time For Change We meet up with Tony Leck and check out the all new ‘The Pavilion Restaurant at St Pierre Park Hotel

WORD ON THE STREET WAS THAT THE PAVILION HAD UPPED STICKS FROM MIDDLE EARTH AND HEADED DOWN TO JOIN THE FINE FOLKS AT ST PIERRE PARK. GALLERY WERE INTRIGUED TO SEE IF THE FINE STANDARDS SET BY TONY HAD BEEN SUSTAINED IN THE MOVE. First impressions were impressive as we entered the swanky new “Londonesk” restaurant … it’s fair to say that the attention to detail was thorough and no expense had been spared. From the designer floorboards to the gigantic lamp shades everything was working in perfect harmony. On arrival we were invited to partake in a pre-dinner drink in the comfortable and chic bar area. The selection of drinks on offer were varied and we eventually settled for a Kia Royale whilst salivating over the dessert display that sits pride of place in the corner of the bar alike a trophy cabinet (poignant as Tony began his career as a Pastry Chef at the St Pierre Hotel). Next stop was our table – on taking our seats we noted that the tables were well spaced and your privacy and comfort had not been compromised by the number of covers. The attentive waiting staff were quick to offer us the wine list and menus. Whilst we chose from the menu we were presented with a miniature loaf of homemade bread each accompanied by Guernsey Butter, which was more than ample and took away the need to ask for further bread.

68

THE FOOD... For the Starters Camembert Fritter with Salad & Raspberry Dressing (V) This was absolutely divine. The Camembert was neatly contained within a perfectly sized parcel and the Raspberry Coulis cut through with a great twist with sweet and sharp tastes. Three Pátés; Pavilion, Porky’s & Mrs Fisken’s Oink oink … if you love pate then this is a great starter for you. Sample some of Guernsey’s finest Pate including the Pavilions very own excellent smooth variety. Our preference would have been for more toast (although the generous serving of table bread saved the day). The Main event Meadow Court Farm Reared Steak ‘n’ ‘Liberation Ale’ Pie with Creamy Mash Despite being made from Guernsey’s finest beef the portion was incredibly generous. The beef was tender as if it had been braised for several hours and the rich liquor was intense with deep flavour from the Liberation Ale. Oh so often dishes like this are only served with a lid but I was pleasantly surprised to find a base to the pie.

Sea Bass with King Prawn & Garlic Butter, French Fries

Wine

Outstanding, simple yet scrumptious. The bass was cooked perfectly and set alight by the prawn and garlic butter that generously adorned the dish. We opted for fries with this dish that made for the compliment and being served in a separate cast iron dish made for great theatre and prevented them becoming soggy from the abundance of garlic butter and prawns.

The wine list was excellent with a wide variety of world wines suited to all budgets. We opted for the Malbec and the Pinot Grigio, both under £20 and excellent value for money. We would not hesitate in making this choice again.

Pudding Traditional Gáche Mélée of Wind fallen Apples with Guernsey Cream Tony’s roots as pastry chef shone through as he delivered a fantastic version of this Guernsey classic. The addition of cinnamon worked amazingly with the local Guernsey Cream.

If you are looking for a real taste of Guernsey and want to feel pampered in doing so then you simply have to head down to The Pavilion and visit Tony and his excellent team.

Why not try your hand at some of Tony’s dishes for yourself and purchase a copy of ‘Pavilion On A Plate Fresh Flavours from Guernsey’ available at The Guernsey Press Shop @ £20.00 or at Amazon.co.uk

Warm Dark Cherry Tart with Hechet Farm Ice Cream This tart was simply luxurious, it was rammed full of flavorsome dark cherries encased in frangipane on a delicious sweet pastry base. The ice cream made for the ultimate partner in calorie crime … nom nom!

Home from home Beautiful and Boutique

Mr and Mrs Le Page find out you don’t have to go too far to get away from it all. There’s a whole other world waiting through the gates of Guernsey’s The Farmhouse Hotel.

scape the day to day normality and step into a life of boutique elegance that only The Farmhouse hotel in Guernsey can offer. This elegant bolt hold in the picturesque parish of St Saviours ticks all the boxes and leaves you feeling refreshed & pampered. Attention to detail: Nothing is overlooked at The Farmhouse, from the moment we arrived all the staff did their utmost to ensure our stay was one to remember. Courteous reception staff welcomed us to the hotel and checked us in quickly and without hassle and the porters whipped our bags off to our room. We had decided to sample the lunch menu and being suitably attired we left our bags in the good hands of the porters and headed to the bar for a pre-dinner drink. Our dedicated waitress showed us to the bar where we were greeted by the knowledgable bar chap who introduced us to the extensive aray of drinks that were on offer. Deciding what to have was a tough choice as many of our favourite brands were stocked. Being a hot day myself (Mr Le Page) opted for the locally produced Roquettes Cider (on recommendation of the barman) and Mrs Le Page endulged in a cold glass of Chablis. We decided to take our drinks into the garden whilst we waited. Within minutes we were both feeling right at home and perfectly relaxed.

70

The gardens were stunning and full of magical things for children to discover. There were also circular dining huts that would easily double up as a secret hideaway when playing in the sun. With this in mind Mrs Le Page jested that the bronze statues of animals would either make for great hunting or adorable pets dependant on the child involved. No sooner had we concluded our drinks, we were shown to the dining room for lunch. I must admit I was a little disappointed to be leaving the sunshine behind at first but low and behold our table was positioned right next to the sliding doors opening on to the varander so we had the best of both worlds. Just when we thought this could not get much better Mrs Le Page, quick to pick up the food menu noted that our chef for the day was no less than celebrity chef Alax Mackay from Ready Steady Cook. Apparently the Managing Director at the Farmhouse knew Alex and his family well and decided to bring Alex over for a 3 day residency whilst his family enjoyed the hotel. The menu was stunning and we decided to order dishes that we both enjoyed so we could share in what was to be a culinary experience that was flawless and certainly did not disappoint on any level. Our waitress called the Sommelier who took real delight in suggesting some fabulous wines to accompany GUERNSEY’S STYLE MAGAZINE

Dinner arrived in true Farmhouse style with decadent china and silverware. Again the food far from disapointed. What followed was an excellent nights sleep in an extremely comfortable bed. We awoke to the morning sun streaming through the windows and a comfortable silence only broken by the occasional bird song. At 8am on the dot there was a tap on the door and I opened it to find a waiter carrying a tray of delectable breakfast. Again the quality of delivery had not faultered and the breakfast was on par with the finest we had ever tasted and very plentiful. Due to other commitments we had to check out at 9am so our story ends there ... but to anyone looking to find a retreat in Guernsey then The Farmhouse is ‘the’ hotel for you.

need to know The Farmhouse is a beautiful 14 bedroom, boutique hotel nestling in the heart of picturesque St Saviours Parish, Guernsey. Surrounded by lawns, trees and flower gardens, The Farmhouse has an idyllic setting, and a great location to enjoy the wonderful island of Guernsey. the food we ordered. The food at lunch was simply divine and perfectly set on the Villeroy and Boch dinner service. The service was attentive, informative and totally non intrusive with a fine dining experience in a relaxed environment ... just the way myself and Mrs Le Page like it to be. Maybe it was the experience to date or sheer inquisitiveness but myself and Mrs Le Page could not wait to discover what was instore behind the door to our room. Our room was stunning and again the team had not failed to go the extra mile with the attention to detail. Champagne chilling next to the complimentary fruit basket was a great touch ... but the decanter of port was a complete surprise. A luxurious double bed took pride of place in the room with bed linen of an exceptional standard. The furniture had been tastefully chosen, you could tell immediately that these were one off pieces and it gave the impression that the room was unique and made the stay that bit more personal. A massive 42 inch TV was perfectly positioned on the wall. The sun was blazing down onto the balcony so we decided to enjoy our complimentary champagne and take in the view over the rural aspects of Guernsey. The next hour that passed was pure bliss as we soaked up the sun and BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

relished in the tranquility of doing nothing and generally feeling pampered and content from an excellent lunch. The temptation of the crystal blue waters of the pool was too much so we decided to head down to the sunloungers to take a swim and enjoy the last of the days sun. Whilst at the pool the staff continued to be attentive and waited on us serving coffee and an ice cold Gin & Tonic. As the sun went down we put on our robes and headed over the the garden area to play Giant Jenga and discuss how we were going to spend the evening relaxing. Heading back to the room we decided to shower before dinner (which we had served in the room under recommendation from one of the staff). The bathroom was prestine and exquisite, the shower was like nothing I have ever experienced with a calming colored light show that chilled the senses and made one feel incredibly relaxed. The Bathroom suit was Villeroy and Boch which echoed the quality of the decor throughout. After selecting yet more tantalizing treats off the menu we settled down to watch the closing ceremony of the Olympics on the TV. I can honestly say that this was to be one of the most relaxing experiences we have ever had in a hotel suite.

L’Escalier Maison Bar & Grill, Owner – Dean How long has your establishment been trading? 11 Years What country were you born in? Basingstoke, UK What made you come to Guernsey? It wasn’t planned I just woke up here! What are your signature dishes? My menu constantly changes so I don’t have one particular signature dish. All our steaks are cooked on BBQ coals using smokeless coal so in theory they are cooked on an open fire. One dish Dean I very proud of is his Reconstructed Roast Beef Dinner: Hot Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding Roulade with Red Cabbage & Port Puree this is accompanied by a Spoonful of Greens, Butter Roasted Carrot and a Roast Potato Fritter What ingredient could you not live without? Louis my Commis Chef and Ginger my new Front of House girl aka Becca Dean’s Chef Louis has previously worked with Gary Rhodes and is very energetic in his cooking style, this is reflected in this year’s Tennerfest that the restaurant has participated in. Dean said each year I try and play around with the menu and make it interesting for the customer as my biggest fear is the menu becoming static. Dean reinvented a traditional English main dish the Reconstructed Roast Beef but served it as a starter, it has proven to be so popular Dean is adding it to his A la Carte menu as a main course. Another English favourite is Shepherds Pie, Dean and Louis looked at the ingredients, considered tastes and textures and added colours and flavours to re-invent this popular dish. L’Escalier Maison Bar & Grill are trying to achieve bringing back Nouvelle cuisine but in gluttonous portions. L’Escalier Maison Bar & Grill host Pie Night on a Wednesday evening. The menu is £12.50 for 3 courses so if you are a lover of traditional British food, this is a must!

Was working in London and current boss moved to Guernsey to set up Dragon, she recommended it and I relocated. What are your signature dishes? • Deep Fried Chicken with Marmite Sauce • Fillet Steak with creamy Black Pepper Sauce • Kong Po Sauce – very popular for diners who enjoy spicy hot food What ingredient could you not live without? Garlic and Lemon Sauce As soon as you walk through the entrance you are instantly catapulted from the Bridge, St Sampsons into an oriental palace, this beautifully decorated restaurant’s ambience is set off perfectly with its dim lighting, sparkling cutlery and the surroundings are so shiny! The restaurant is family run by a Father and Daughter with 2 Chefs and waiting staff. Dragon offers a takeaway service but why would you want to when this Malaysian restaurant is so welcoming? The whole team at Gallery were fortunately invited to dine at Dragon last weekend and the service was attentive, the food was tasty and served in perfect portions. HISTORICAL HEAVEN

HISTORICAL HEAVEN

words | Louise Gabriel

W

hen the owners of Le Hurel house wanted to extend their family’s living space – they briefed architects at Create to design a new extension, which crucially had to be in line with the decorative, country style of this traditional farmhouse. Although a beautiful house, it had an impractical layout for today’s modern living and was a slightly tired property. Rather than place a modern glazed box extension on the property, they needed something a little more in keeping. The new extension replaces the existing Guernsey lean-to vinehouse and a small older kitchen conservatory style extension and now provides an impressive timber-framed family room combining the kitchen and dining area. The way the design incorporates a handsome oak frame harks back to traditional building techniques which were prevalent at the time when the original farmhouse was constructed. A little remodelling of the flow of rooms was also required to provide access to improve on the standard Guernsey farmhouse layout, where the study was only accessed through another room. The architects

82

James Barker and Ricky Mahy, wanted to avoid the appearance of a long thin extension punctuated with door and window openings resembling a ‘railway carriage’. To avoid this, they envisioned a series of double height spaces formed with the oak framework, creating a complete contrast to the low ceilings within the main farmhouse. The answer came about in the ecclesiastical-looking windows and glazed doors, with the design being inspired by original gothic windows to the gable end of the main house. Large windows and a roof light were put into the new extension to allow light into the back of the existing rather dark farmhouse. Overall, the heavenly feeling of light and space that everyone wants has been created – this time with traditional styling.

PROPERTY SPECIALISTS MAWSON COLLINS LAUNCH IN GUERNSEY “In this process, knowing how to work with tenants is crucial. We can even undertake potentially disruptive improvements such as refurbishing ceilings, kitchens, hot water systems and other parts of the building’s infrastructure without losing income,” he said.

KPMG SEMINAR SEES POSITIVITY IN M&A MARKET ACTIVITY IN THE LOCAL MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS (M&A) MARKET IS ON THE RISE, ACCORDING TO A RECENT SEMINAR HELD BY KPMG IN THE CHANNEL ISLANDS. Activity in the local mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market is on the rise, according to a recent seminar held by KPMG in the Channel Islands.

PROPERTY SPECIALISTS HOWARD MAWSON AND MIKE COLLINS HAVE LAUNCHED A NEW PROPERTY AGENCY, VALUATION AND MANAGEMENT BUSINESS IN GUERNSEY. Recognised by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) as regulated agents, Mawson Collins provides a wide range of specialised services covering commercial investment sales, purchases and lettings, residential leasing, property management, rent and service charge administration and refurbishment project monitoring. Mr Collins and Mr Mawson have over 20 years’ combined experience in the Channel Islands’ property sector and in that time have garnered detailed local knowledge and built strong relationships with a broad range of clients, ranging from Government departments to high street banks, private investors and large UK property companies. Prior to moving to the island, Mr Mawson lived in the UK and worked for one of the world’s leading property consultants, Jones Lang LaSalle, first in the West End before running the Retail property team from its Leeds office. “Our breadth of experience means we cover a wide range of technical property skills, from acting as Red Book valuers and property agents for buyers, sellers and lenders, to undertaking rent reviews and arbitration work for landlords and tenants, or property management for trusts and wealth managers,” he said. Mr Collins has over a decade of property management expertise, prior to which he was an electrical contracts manager and as a result, he brings a strong knowledge of building services and structural matters to the business. “Property management involves oversight of all contracts linked to a building, such as the leases and other crucial documents like the insurance policy or maintenance contracts for fire alarms, electrical or gas services. “It is essential to manage the technical side of the building and how this interacts with the leases and the needs of the tenants, especially when managing service charges and running costs,” he said. In addition Mr Collins said that renovation was a particular area of expertise for the firm. “We specialise in taking tired or end of lease properties and by refurbishing them in phases, we can add value whilst preserving as much of the rent flow as possible. This often involves restructuring leases to keep the sitting tenants in place.

More than 60 delegates attended KPMG’s seminar exploring the M&A market at Les Cotils and were addressed by an expert panel comprising KPMG Advisory Senior Manager Gavin Niven, Nick Evans of RBSI and Ian Moore of Close Brothers Private Equity Capital. Mr Niven outlined the importance of M&A activity in achieving growth in the current climate, while acknowledging the key trends in this market. “A recent KPMG survey showed that 30% of senior executives are looking to exploit growth opportunities through successful transactions. Businesses that are serious about their growth agenda really need to be looking towards M&A activity to achieve this. “There is an increase in confidence and businesses are acknowledging that factors such as regulatory pressure can actually create opportunities,” he said. A rise in the number of strategic alliances and joint ventures was one of the notable trends. “This type of deal is a powerful way to penetrate emerging markets, another popular focus at the moment, and is usually lower cost with minimised risk but still has the benefit of access to new markets, customers and expertise,” he said. The key drivers underlying mergers and acquisitions in the Channel Islands were identified as being succession planning, capital and solvency ratios, wealth growth in the Far East and the ‘Wall of debt’. The two guest panellists each provided their views on the current market. Mr Evans discussed the raising of transaction finance and Mr Moore provided an investors’ opinion on what made investment in the sector attractive from the private equity persepctive. The guest speakers also highlighted the importance of preparation as well as the use of an experienced advisor in executing a successful transaction. “There is a lot of interest coming from private equity and generally a positive outlook in the market. Successful deals need to be built on preparation. This includes pre-marketing: it’s about getting out there and talking about your business,” said Mr Moore. “We’re looking to invest in trust and fund administration much more, particularly in jurisdictions such as Guernsey. Mr Evans noted that the ‘Wall of debt’ was a considerable driver in prompting these transactions. “Many of the deals are driven by the need to sell or re-finance leveraged assets but this is two-pronged as distressed assets, once re-financed, can drive successful growth.” Ashley Paxton, Head of Advisory for KPMG in the Channel Islands, said there was cause for optimism. “There really is positive interest in the market, particularly from private equity, and its great to see some green shoots after the recent doom and gloom.”

Mr Stevenson has been with the company for more than 12 years and will continue with his operations manager duties as well as sitting on the board. Mr Whitmore is a qualified civil engineer and is responsible for looking after some of Geomarine’s more technical contracts, including marine work. Garenne Group chief executive Andy Hall said the new board of directors would take forward what has been one of the island’s most successful engineering companies.

SAFFERY CONTINUES SWIMMING SUCCESS SAFFERY CHAMPNESS HAS ONCE AGAIN BEEN NAMED THE FIRM THAT RAISED THE MOST AMOUNT OF MONEY AT THIS YEAR’S SKIPTON SWIMARATHON.

‘The new board with its blend of experience, youth and enthusiasm will continue to offer customers an excellent service covering all aspects of civil engineering contracting. Earlier this year, Geomarine completed its 2,000th contract and I am confident that the company will continue to grow under the leadership of the new directors,’ he said.

The firm entered two teams, made up of a mixture of 18 staff members and their children, for the 36th Skipton Swimarathon. At the awards evening on 18 October the Bailiff, Richard Collas, presented the team with the RG Falla Cup for the most funds raised overall, as well as for the second year running, the Lloyds TSB Black Horse Cup for the most raised in the financial services category The firm managed 132 laps raising an impressive £1,123.28. Last year’s mammoth total of £41,000 has already seen affect with Young People Guernsey opening the Hub and the new extreme sports park at the Beau Sejour centre which is set to open next March.

RED GRILL HOUSE & COCKTAIL BAR IN 2013 MICHELIN GUIDE Red Grill House & Cocktail Bar is proud to announce their inclusion in the 2013 Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland. The restaurant has achieved the highly coveted two ‘fork and spoon’ status after only 6 months of trading, and is the only new entry into this category in Guernsey this year. The ‘fork and spoon’ status is used by Michelin to reflect the overall comfort and quality of the restaurant. Red Grill House & Cocktail Bar opened in May of this year and specialises in high quality meat sourced from UK farms only. The team is lead by proprietor David Matheson, who is fueled by a passion for all things food and wine. He stands not only to serve his clientele but also to share his knowledge and provide a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience. The wine list is well regarded as one of the most extensive on the island – with much of it sourced from Dave’s own private collection. Red is not only aimed at meat lovers, the menu is well rounded and suitable dishes for all palates can be found, and there is a cocktail bar upstairs for those who choose a liquid diet. The bar maintains the high standards of the restaurant, with award winning staff who are highly trained using only the finest ingredients and spirits.

WINNERS ARE ANNOUNCED FOR LIVING ART COMPETITION 2012 THE LIVING ART 2012 COMPETITION HAS RAISED £5,000 FOR YPG (YOUNG PEOPLE GUERNSEY). There were 280 entries in the competition which was hosted online by Livingroom Estate Agents where photographs of all the creative submissions were displayed and people could bid on their favourites. Living Art, which launched in May 2012, called on Guernsey’s professional, amateur and budding artists to express their individual interpretation of the island. Livingroom donated the cash prizes of £500 each for the 0-16 years and 16-21 age groups and £1000 for the 21+ age group. YPG’s chairman Jane St Pier, Livingroom’s Simon Torode and Richard Hardie, professional artist and Guernsey College of Further Education lecturer, Charlotte Barnes, and Tony Tostevin, Director of The Partnership Agency, formed the judging panel. The three winners were Jenna Tostevin in the 0-16 age category, Robert James Allen in the 16 – 21 age category and James Colmer in the 21+ age category. Miss Tostevin, aged 14, produced a mixed media piece of a girl’s face decorated with items and scenes from Guernsey with a three-dimensional donkey’s ear and cow’s ear. The piece was put together in a bright, bold style. The judges were very impressed with the amount of thought and detail that had gone into the individual elements of the piece. Mr Allen, aged 17, entered a hand drawn picture which was then computer edited. The picture was his impression of sunsets he remembers viewing when walking along the cliffs at Icart. The judges were impressed with the sharp quality and the bright colours. Mr Colmer, aged 36, entered a canvas oil painting simply titled ‘Cobo’ featuring a favourite summer pastime – eating fish and chips on the beach. Over £200 was raised from this piece alone in the online bidding process. The judges felt this painting captured the essence of summer in Guernsey perfectly and were impressed with the professional finish of the piece. All funds raised from the online auction will all go to the YPG charity. Young People Guernsey (YPG) is a Guernsey charity that identifies and responds to the needs of young people in the Bailiwick. YPG’s first project was a partnership with Barnardo’s, the UK’s largest children’s charity, commissioning them to provide an information, advice and guidance centre in St. Peter Port for young people aged 11-16 years called ‘The Hub’. YPG’s objective is that all young people should be able to find confidential support and advice from the very best professionals. The partnership with Barnardo’s and the creation of this centre has been an important and significant development for young people in Guernsey. Livingroom Director Simon Torode (and founding YPG committee member) said: “We were overwhelmed with the remarkable talent of the island’s artists young and old. The artwork in the competition was of a fantastic standard and we are so grateful the artists gave their pieces to such a worthy cause and we’d like to thank all those who bid on the work. Their generosity was staggering and helped us achieve such a substantial amount for YPG.” Jane St. Pier Chair of the Young People Guernsey charity committee said: “We are delighted with the success and end result of the Living Art competition, the help and support from Livingroom is wonderful and the funds will be key in helping Guernsey’s young people.”

WHEN LOOKING AT EQUITIES,

THE COMPENSATION FOR THE RISK TAKEN WILL BE A COMBINATION OF THE SHARE PRICE APPRECIATING AND THE DIVIDEND PAID. FOR BONDS, THIS WILL NORMALLY BE BY WAY OF INTEREST PAYMENTS. Bond investors have been buying at high prices but with the expectation that those prices will go higher still. The longer the time to maturity, the poorer the fundamentals and the likelihood that the value is negatively impacted by a hike in interest rates, is much increased. Interest rate risk may be some way off but many are of the opinion that it will come. One day we will look back nostalgically and recall the days of QE and nearly zero interest rates. Don’t hold your breath though. Whilst the central bankers continue to manage and distort markets, it would appear that inflationary pressures are ever increasing and with them come the almost inevitable increase in interest rates. After previously being the darlings of equity investors, emerging markets have lost a large amount of their gains and now look to be good value again, for many investors. They are certainly not the safe-haven that risk-averse investors should seek out but at least it seems that investors are being compensated rather better for taking risks in these countries. This is very different from the bond markets mentioned above where investors are certainly not being compensated for the risks that they are taking. UK, US and German 10 year bonds are giving interest rates of under 2% at the moment. In such a climate, identifying risks and associated returns on investment are paramount. It is the ability to construct a diversified portfolio that enables investors to reduce risks where possible and ensure that they are adequately compensated for the risks that they do take, in the form of higher returns. Researching and taking steps to mitigate potential future risks has become a large consideration in undertaking investment decisions and will continue to grow in significance Oculus Ltd is licensed by the Guernsey Financial Services Commission and offer discretionary asset management services to trusts and private clients.

When he went to university he played England schools football and on his return he played hockey for Independents and says himself that he was a pretty average outfield player in division one. He also dabbled in a little bit of Priaulx League Football for Sylvans in 1996/1997. Off he went to the UK again and this time, again in his own words, put on a bit of weight and got himself into a state of “Not very fit”. He then return to the Island and whilst working at Specsavers decided to play Business League Hockey as a goalkeeper where he watched other keepers and picked up the skills needed. Rob then got invited to senior training and then went on to make the senior squad, where he made his debut as goalkeeper against Banbury in 2006 in a game they lost 6-1. For this challenge I had my old mate Phil Roussel (Beanie) along to help. The plan was that I put on the goalkeeper kit as well as Rob and Beanie smacks five shots at each of us from the edge of the “D” and then we face five penalty flicks each, winner takes all. It took me the best part of 20 minutes just to put all the padded equipment required on! There were throat protectors, arm guards, foot guards, thigh guards, leg guards and helmets strewn all over the floor! It was only when I got in goal that I realized the gravity of the situation as Beanie smashed it at me. The “D” shots ended 2-2 and I lost the penalty flicks 3-1, and to be honest I was glad to walk away with my good looks intact which I am sure is a relief to my army of female adorers. It was time for a beer in the Hockey Club where we chewed the cud over a pint of Carlsberg Export, which amazingly Beanie paid for! Why are the holes in cats fur always in the right place for their eyes? (Bewildered look on his face) My cat has many extra holes in it, which she uses to relieve herself on my kit bag as she thinks it smells like a Tom Cat! Anyone who says an onion is the only vegetable to make you cry has clearly never been hit in the face by a turnip. How important is your protective gear? Absolutely critical! Knowing that I can trust my gear is key but it comes at a cost, a set of goalkeeping kit can cost up to £1,500.00! I went for a job as a gold prospector, but it didn’t pan out. Who has the most important job in a hockey match? The Umpire! The players can do whatever they want in a game but the umpire can make or break a game. We have some good umpires over here. Just to say, I am a qualified umpire too! Also my job is pretty important. If the shooter misses ten shots then scores and they win 1-0 that makes them a hero. If I save ten then let one in and we lose 1-0 then it makes me a zero! I just saw a movie about some guy who had amazing revelations while eating his cereal. It was called Breakfast Epiphanies. What’s the

94

most amazing game you have played in? I has to be when we won the HA Trophy in 2008 when I was in goal against Eastbourne in the UK. It was 3-3 with ‘Golden Goal” extra time in play and I saved a shot whilst diving with my glove which rebounded out and three passed later was in the opposition net as Ben Allberry scored the winner. I know an X-ray specialist who married one of his patients; everybody wondered what he saw in her. What do you see in Hockey? Locally it combines skill, fitness and a fantastic social side. It’s very inclusive and everyone is made to feel part of things. I once went to A&E with a piece of lettuce hanging out of my ear. “That looks nasty,” said the nurse. “Nasty” I said, “This is just the tip of the iceberg.” Surely you must have had your fair share of Hockey injuries being a goalkeeper, tell us about them. Apart from the bruised knee I just received from Beanie - I have been knocked out twice, separated my collar bone, torn left shoulder, torn left rotator cuffs, cracked the bone in my right hand, dislocated my right elbow, broke three ribs, torn right calf muscle, broke two toes and had plenty of bruises. I have to say though; I also wear less padding and play over 70 games a season! Give us three local players to watch out for? Andrew Oxburgh who isn’t out of place as a 14 year-old training with the senior Island side, Danni Jones as she is physically strong and her distribution is good and Zak Damarell who is very fit and has good vision whilst being the best reverse stick striker. What’s the funniest thing that you have seen on a Hockey pitch? A Goalkeeper on a moped! During an Easter Festival in Jersey we had something called “Zulu Starts” where the two keepers run from their goal into the centre of the pitch to have a Sumo wrestle to start the game off. In this particular game one of the keepers run towards the middle and the other came at him on a moped! What are you looking for from your defenders? The senior defenders are very skilled and there is not a huge amount that I have to say to them although sometimes I can be fairly vocal. They are very composed and we spend a lot of time practicing basic defending. Some games I only get a few balls hit at me because they control things so well. What do you consider to be your main achievement in Hockey to date? I was lucky enough to be in the squad that won the HA Trophy and was on the bench in the final although I did get to start the first two rounds on the pitch. In the last eight years I have gone from not being a goalkeeper to playing in the Channel Island County Championships three out of the last four years. I am really thankful to be playing with so many good players who look out for each other. If you want to get into an adult team or would like to take up the game as a junior then please get in touch with the Hockey Development Officer: Sally on 07781 439409 or sally@guernseyhockey.com

PARALYMPICS INSPIRATION

PARALYMPICS

INSPIRATION words | Charlotte Giles

FIRSTLY PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE GSAD AND WHAT IT IS THAT YOU DO HERE? The GSAD promotes sport for disabled people, it was first established in 1984 and we still reside in the KGV community building. We meet every Friday where we see around 40 people with various disabilities come together to play a large selection of indoor and outdoor sports under the guidance of 10 – 12 regular volunteers. Sport coaches from the island come in to inspire attendees to reach a high standard. We encourage those with talent to join abled bodies clubs and also annually take a group away to Bath to compete in a 5 day disabled sporting event. All of which requires fund raising and sponsorship, recently ‘Only Fools and Donkeys’ thankfully supported us by buying us new sweatshirts and ‘BDO’ held a cycle ride raising around £3000. How has your work in Guernsey helped those with disabilities? We have seen big improvements in the behaviour of those who attend, they initially enter shy and soon start chatting away. They come here as children and become men, it is very satisfying for the volunteers to see. We encourage them to work together in teams and learn to think about other people and it’s a great experience for them. One amazing moment was we took a little boy swimming and as he was floating in the water yelled with joy ‘look I can walk’ because the water was holding him up. It also helps them physically; not only good exercise but also a young man here has had noticeably better coordination. With the aftermath of the Paralympics many feel it has helped raise awareness for those with disabilities, do you share this view? Yes! People have started to look at things differently, the general public are much more aware of disabled people, for example, this year they all went to the Queen’s party when often they are kept separate. It has shown that although disabled people may do things differently, they can do what everyone else does, it may take a few moments longer but it’s amazing what they can do. We want to take the group’s sporting activity further and hope after visits to Jersey we can develop inter-island disabled sport competitions. Have the London Paralympics inspired any of disabled people that come to the GSAD? Definitely! From watching the Paralympics they saw themselves differently and that with the right determination and practice they could succeed. We have noticed by them observing people who have disabilities, that are coping and managing to lead ‘normal’ lives, it has given them belief that they can do it and can do more than they thought could. It acted as a big confidence boost and given them something to aim for. We would love to see some of them competing at a high level, we currently have our eyes on a talented young swimmer. How can people in Guernsey who would like to take part get involved?

behavioural problems where the GSAD will work with the parents to assess whether we are able to accommodate for them. We are also always looking for volunteers; anyone is welcome to come and help, it doesn’t have to be a weekly commitment, just to come on the odd occasion would be great. It is a great opportunity for those doing ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ or hoping to go into medicine and we also offer help to those wanting take a higher course at the College of FE. To end the interview on a high what would you say is the most important thing people should remember when it comes to the work you do here? The feeling for the volunteers is very rewarding when they see the improvement and the enjoyment those who attend get out of it. It is satisfying to the volunteers to see people changing and begin to grow. Each individual who attends the service is thrilled by what they can achieve and we as helpers get thrilled for them - it is a very enjoyable experience for them and the parents always say how much they talk about it. The work the GSAD does is extremely admirable and it is clear the volunteers love what they do. However, like all services they do require help and funding and anyone who would like to volunteer need only get in touch with Christine on 249328. The service has grown massively since 1984 and they are running out of space and any sponsorship would be gratefully received. The Guernsey Association for Disabled Sports will be taking part in The Combined Charities Sale on Sunday 18th November… so make sure you head down and show your support.

Gallery met with Chairman, Christine Le Prevost, who told us about the Guernsey Sports Association for the Disabled (GSAD) and her thoughts on the Paralympics.

Any disabled person who would like to attend is welcome to just turn up and join in. The only exception is if a child has severe

GOPRO HERO3

STERIPEN TRAVELLER

The new line of GoPro cameras are slicker and smaller and smarter than the last, with prices ranging between $199.99 and $399.99. There are three models in the new range, Silver, White and Black (they’re all the same colour, confusing I know), and the Silver and White versions both sport the same 1080p camera with 30fps video. The newest addition to the Hero3 is the 4K video on the Black edition. This is a new level of quality, seen only on the newest technology. This does mean, however, by using 4K you’re in fact putting yourself ahead of the game, reducing video quality on computers and laptops that can’t handle the “higher-thanHD” frames. All very technical. For more information, visit gopro.com/hd-hero3cameras or go to Motorama, the island’s premium stockist of the new GoPros.

Illness. The time when all you want is to lie in your bed and, if you’re a real man, complain to everyone that you have some life threatening disease called rhinopharyngitis (the common cold). However, find yourself struck down by a bacterial infection from dirty water in the middle of Thailand and it won’t be bed you’re begging for. With miles to the nearest hospital and fluids coming of both ends like an eruption at Krakatoa, you’ll be cursing the little sod that sold you that curiously cheap bottle of “Evien”. That’s where the Steripen Traveller Mini comes in. Hold the pen-sized end in any water for just 48 seconds and it uses UV rays to kill any bacteria that would have quite literally caused a shit-storm. Very handy if you don’t fancy forking out on the travel insurance to pay a doctor that takes three goes to find the “wein” in your arm.

There’s also a powerful torch in the base so it’s not all about play; Ella-ella has a sensible side too.

PRO SKI SIMULATOR For those who, for some reason, don’t want to hit the slopes this season, but still want a (nearly) identical experience, there is the Pr Ski Simulator. You may not get the snow, the fresh mountain air, the companionship of sharing a chalet or the joyous first sip of a heart-warming vin chaud in that welcoming mountaintop bar, but you can certainly get the knee strain that skiers feel in the comfort of your own home.

SHARP AQUOS BOARD With the iPad revolution of the last few years, any touch screen tablet without an apple on the back has become practically obsolete. However, when it comes to business, a small display just isn’t enough to show off your new and innovative ideas to the potential investors from China. That’s where the Aquos Board comes in. With an 80inch display, and running Windows, this amazing machine connects to a printer to let you print any changes you make to those vital business documents. The touch screen allows you to doodle, sketch and tap to your heart’s content, and with a 1080p display it doesn’t have to be all business. Movies and gaming are a perfect way to pass the time between the meetings and conference calls.

Whether you’re preparing for the season, or imagining yourself on the slopes in mid December, this is a great way to train, with “the best ski carving simulation possible” that will help with balance, coordination, and, according to the website, reflexes. There are three models, the basic, standard and professional, that all come with a workout DVD (the machine seems pretty limited, a DVD may not be necessary). So if you fancy the skiing experience without all the hassle of travel and expenses, this seems like the ideal machine, as long as you have a pretty vivid imagination to picture yourself darting between moguls and other skiers. At £1559.56, this machine, which costs more than a skiing holiday, is a great way to get in shape when your foolish friends are off gallivanting in the Alps.

BEHRINGER INUKE BOOM Prepare yourselves, music lovers, for the iPod dock that will put any sub-woofer, amplifier or speaker you can find to shame. This behemoth, producing 10,000W of audio power that will quite literally pummel your brain into the back of your skull, is 8ft wide and 4ft high, and weighs in at 318kg. It’s not exactly the most practical gadget on our list, but it is without doubt the loudest. Warning, if you want to stay friends with your neighbours, this product is not advised.

CONTENT WITH YOUR TV EXPERIENCE? ARE YOU SURE?

IF YOU’VE EVER FELT THAT YOU’RE MISSING OUT WHEN IT COMES TO SITTING IN FRONT OF THE BOX, THEN SURE HAVE A NEW BOX FOR YOU TO ADD TO YOUR HOME ENTERTAINMENT COLLECTION. If you’ve ever pined for the elusive channels that Freeview can’t provide locally such as ITV4, Five USA, CITV and a host of radio stations as well as a handful of other locally-specific content such as up to date weather and tide tables as well as access to webcams across the islands. Fancy checking the surf? Wondering if now would be a good time to miss the rush in town? It’s all on your telly. SureTV also enables you to view online, on demand services through your big screen too, as well as pausing, rewinding and fast forwarding (where applicable; time travel is not one of SureTV’s features I’m afraid, so you still can’t see the end of a programme before it has been broadcast, obviously) plus multi-room viewing on top of all of the Freeview channels you may or may not have already come to love. The onboard memory can store up to 160 hours of content, and what’s more there’s a smartphone app that allows you set your favourite programs to record on the go from anywhere, at any time.

YAMAHA FX NYTRO MTX SE 162 They told me think snowsports. They told me think wanderlust. I thought of the Yamaha FX Nytro MTX SE 162. It’s not your usual snow sport, probably because not everybody has $12,600 to throw around, but who hasn’t dreamed of bombing down a black run at what feels like 1000mph, laughing at the pathetic people using energy to get around. With adjustable suspension, riders can choose the stiffness of the ride, whether they want to be manoeuvring through woodland or mocking the fools in their freezing chairlifts. There’s not much else to say about this beautiful piece of engineering excellence, but there are only a few methods of travel that justify wearing all black ski-gear and pretending to be chased by bad guys with guns, and this is most certainly one of them.

Whether you’re already a Sure customer or not, they’ve got some fantastic deals that could see you taking home a SureTV box for just £59 and your monthly subscription to services for free! For example, if you take (or already subscrive to) broadband, mobile services and a landline from Sure then a SureTV subscription won’t cost you a penny, whereas if you choose to take 2 services it’ll only cost £6 per month, and if you just have a Sure boradband connection (which is required to use the SureTV service) then it’ll set you back £12 a month. Given the added value in these packages, we’d say that’s a pretty good deal for access to such a wealth of real-time and on demand content.

ADVENTURE MEDICAL KIT BY SOL ORIGIN For those of you who have seen the movie “Touching the Void”, you know that getting stuck in the mountains is far from a casual stroll in the park. Admittedly, skiing holidays are not exactly an ascent of Everest, and you’re quite likely to be found within an hour, but for those who feel they need one, the Adventure Medical Kit SOL Origin is one of the finest. With over 30 items including a no-fail sparker, super-bright LED torch, steel blade and GPS tracking, whatever situation you end up in you can guarantee that you’ll be able to fend off anything, whether it be polar bears or the rather irate family of the chalet you accidentally crash into when trying to ski home.

PORTINFER Ben Hinshaw started his musical career in Guernsey, most notably as a member of Our Sleepwalking Hero who gigged both locally and in London. Ben is now based in California, where he has just recorded his debut mini-album under the name of Portinfer (a reference I assume would be lost on most Californians). Continuing with the acoustic indie rock template familiar to those who remember Our Sleepwalking Hero, for his debut Ben has crafted a set of six great songs that bring to mind a combination of the mid-2000s brand of pop singersongwriters with something of the more current folk revival movement. Across the six tracks Ben demonstrates an ear for a strong melody that makes the songs some of the most easily listenable tracks I’ve heard in a while, while the vocals, for those who want to listen harder, do offer something with some extra substance as well. On top of that Ben shows a strong musical ability with multi-layered guitars as well as a very honest vocal style that lends what could be a set of very middle-of-the-road tunes something a little more for those who want to find it. Download the album from portinfer.bandcamp.com TOM

HELLFIGHTER

Damnation’s Wings

With a gig coming up in Guernsey later in the month I thought it a good opportunity to take a look at the debut album from Hellfighter, featuring former Guernsey resident, and ex-Thousand Points of Hate frontman, Simon Gordon. With a history dating back to 90s UK thrashers Xentrix, Hellfighter certainly come to the party with a pedigree and throughout they certainly live up to it with a musical style that clearly draws from the wave of thrash that hit its stride in the 90s, spearheaded by band’s like Machine Head. What sets this album apart from many that have followed in Machine Head’s vast wake is the element of “Britishness” that has been retained, particularly in terms of the vocals. While I was expecting a more hardcore style, particularly knowing Thousand Points of Hate, what we get on Damnation’s Wings is a more NWOBHM influenced sound clearly influenced by Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford. What this leaves us with a cracking set of heavy metal songs that stand out from the crowd with their own mix of sounds and a band well worth catching as they play The Fermain Tavern alongside Nemesis and Dead Wing on the 17th November. You can get hold of Damnation’s Wings through iTunes or Amazon. TOM

ROLLING STONES BOTH WITH AEROSMITH AND THE IS MONTH (THEIR 75TH RELEASING NEW SINGLES TH IT’S A GOOD TIME TO AND 107TH RESPECTIVELY), IS IT TIME TO QUIT? POSE THE QUESTION; WHEN Now, if i’m honest, both ‘Tell me’ and ‘Doom and Gloom’ are perfectly acceptable releases; however I just can’t bring myself to listen to them. Some will say “good on ‘em”; you know, being still “at it” and all that. As if it’s a really gruelling task playing to millions of (still) adoring fans paying way over the odds to see their new hip replacement in action rocking their out of date moves. Or their fashion sense, which would be highly embarrassing even if still entertained by your granddad! I just don’t dig it. And to rub yet more salt in this decaying wound; if you want to go and see the Stones, standard ticket prices are over £300 a pop (that’s if you are lucky enough to get one...). What a lovely way to give something back to your fans for fifty years of dedication. In all honesty, I think Mick Jagger knows exactly when to quit: when he’s rich enough to pay for more wives and kids... At least once upon a time, however, back at art school (perhaps) Jagger’s motives were pure and I much prefer The Stones living it up in their old age compared to One Direction’s mantra of ‘Living Whilst We’re Young’. Being forced to endure that single blasting through car stereos and other various appliances this month, I decided to check out the lyrics for myself after catching one or two lines that grabbed my attention. It is amazing when you remove all the over-produced, intensely synth-ridden layers of tosh just what exactly you get. With a self- confessed target audience of 11 to 14 year old girls , you’d think the lyrical content would consist of puppy love, crushes and ‘kiss-chase’. But these boys seem to have something else slightly more sinister on their minds; ‘Let’s go crazy till we see the sun I know we only met but let’s pretend it’s love and never stop for anyone tonight lets get some and live while we’re young.’ Now maybe I’m over analysing this. Perhaps I’m even misinterpreting the euphemisms, but i cannot help but feel it is slightly inappropriate. In fact, my opinion is that it’s almost condoning underage sex. With all the current shocking exposures I think that it’s only fair that One direction are held accountable for this kind of shocking negligence of their responsibilities and abuse of their position. I’m sure you will agree that this sort of behaviour should not be tolerated and should be punishable only byway of life imprisonment... On the upside Jake Bugg entered the Top 40 with his single ‘Two Fingers’ and though I haven’t quite worked out how earnest his sound and look may be, he seems like a promising young talent. Google him! TYLER

THE LIGHT OF THE NIGHT TOUR

O

f Empires formed in the late summer of 2011 and swiftly stormed off on their pursuit to bring original Rock and Roll to the local scene. After their debut single received a glittering reception they took the plunge to embark on their first UK tour. Vocalist Jack Fletcher, under his live music promotional banner ‘The Future Shock’ set out to find two bands to join in on the fun. The two acts chosen were local band ‘Last of the Light Brigade’ and Brighton-based rockers ‘Nightworkers’. Nightworkers were asked due to connections with Of Empires’ vocalist who met them whilst studying in Brighton. Nightworkers are an original Rock ‘n’ Roll band drawn from the influence of greats such as Primal Scream and The Rolling Stones, their strong enigmatic sound and energetic performances made them a great addition. And so with months of hard work and meticulous planning ‘THE LIGHT OF THE NIGHT TOUR’ was born. I met with band members from Of Empires to find out exactly what they got up to… OPENING NIGHT – CAMDEN ENTERPRISE, LONDON Date: Monday 23rd September 2012 THE JOURNEY: The tour began with a rocky start as the band arrived at the harbour with a grey-looking drummer; riddled with food poisoning he spent the majority of the journey being extremely ill, they eventually arrived in Poole only to be met with treacherous weather and a long drive to London in limited visibility. The Venue: At the first venue they were greeted by ‘legend’ soundman/traditional Geezer ‘Cliff’. The intimate venue Liam eloquently described as ‘Miss Havisham’s room from Great Expectations’ (worn down grandeur and as characterful as the soundman!) but they were soon met by the other bands and with everyone together for the first time they hit it off instantly and prepared for their first gig of the tour. The Performance: Kicking off the night were supporting acts Guernsey star, Joe Corbin and London-based band ‘The Inevitable Pin Hole Burns’. The touring bands got their first taste of touring in the UK and overwhelmed by the experience had a glowing start to the rest of the tour. PERFORMANCE 2 – STICKY MIKE’S, BRIGHTON Date: Wednesday 25th September 2012 THE JOURNEY: The band made their way from London to where they were primarily staying in Brighton, the glamorous life of a rock star was reduced to a mattress on the floor but with moods high the bands set off for a heavy night in Brighton where to their delight it was Fresher’s Week! The Venue: In traditional Rock and Roll style the slightly worse for wear bands arrived at the accurately named ‘Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar’ - the décor of which was stripped from the 80s. Nevertheless, they were pleasingly offered an abundance of free beer resulting in an excellent start to the second gig of the tour! The Performance: Following the opening act Last of the Light Brigade took to the stage with their hit ‘Be My Love’ receiving a rapturous reaction, Of Empires were also delighted with their performance and the crowd reaction and Nightworkers ended the evening with great support from their local fans. PERFORMANCE 3- THE KING ALFRED, SOUTHAMPTON Date: Friday 27th September 2012 THE JOURNEY: The bands made their way to Southampton with BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

MUSIC

a tiresome drive and taking turns to keep the dosing driver awake. (Lesson learnt to insure the car for more than one person!) The Venue: Getting into a routine, the band arrived at The King Alfred, a venue that if you have visited the Mermaid in Sark recently will give you some appreciation of a pub much unchanged in the last 30 years and somewhat fitting the retro sensibilities of the bands. The Performance: Last of the Light Brigade began the night with a high flying start producing an energetic performance, setting the tone for the whole evening. By the time Of Empires reached the stage the venue had filled and they were met with a thunderous atmosphere and highly enthusiastic crowd. Nightworkers headlined with arguably their best performance of the tour; the venue highly complimenting their sound by reverberating the music across the room. Of Empires felt the last UK gig was a particular highlight, attracting the largest and most animated crowd and by feeding off the atmosphere their standards were able to reach new heights. Their high spirits led them to a celebratory party at a local student’s house with nothing but a beat box and an acoustic guitar, the bands came together for a three hour jam with a constantly flowing supply of booze. PERFORMANCE 4 – THE FERMAIN TAVERN, GUERNSEY Date: Saturday 28th September 2012 THE JOURNEY: After a wild night, the bands had to face the early hours ready for a 7am boat trip from Poole. The rough journey didn’t help the raging hangovers and a very ill Matt had a less than enjoyable time but with true professionalism they headed straight to the Tav as soon as they docked in Guernsey. The Venue: The band arrived at the highly popular gigging venue the Fermain Tavern to be met with a delivery of Oliver Twist gin from their sponsor and utilising the ‘hair of the dog’ method they brought themselves back to form. The Performance: Firstly supported by local bands ‘Rent O Clean’ and ‘Twelve Tribe Mansion’, the schedule began with Nightworkers delivering a performance different from the Guernsey norm. Both Last of the Light Brigade and Of Empires squeezed the last of their energy into their performances (understanding why 50 years of this nonsense has left Keith Richards looking so rough). FINAL PERFORMANCE- THE LIVE LOUNGE, JERSEY Date: Sunday 29th September 2012 THE JOURNEY: With a couple of days recovery time the band gained enough energy to go large on their final night of the tour and made their way on the ferry to Jersey pumped for the final performance. The Venue: The bands reacquainted at the small venue with some suspicious knock off rum tasting more like tequila with a sense of melancholy, toasting the end of an adventurous week and newly formed friendships. The Performance: Of Empires, who after some recuperation came back to life to end the tour on a high, followed by an epic performance from Nightworkers. The tour ended in a glorious explosion of talent and celebration as each band expressed their appreciation for each other’s music by taking front positions in the crowd. Of Empires left the tour with an immense learning experience as well as with a whole new boost of motivation and confidence in their music. As well as being a great success and having the time of their lives, it has opened their eyes to a whole new way of performing, making them a Guernsey band to keep an eye on. “It’s kinda funny, it’s gotta be this way, some might say get back on that road again, got no time to repent, I am the night, I am the night.”
