Discover the island of Madeira ACTIVE - INDIVIDUAL- SPORTY It’s only 54 km in long, 22 km in wide, but reaches altitudes of up to 1862m. This island has a lot to offer! Its diversity of landscape and vegetation is enormous: grasslands in the East, subtropical mango, papaya, fig and banana plantations to the South, terraced fields irrigated by the famous `Levadas´, hillsides where grapes are cultivated, eucalyptus forests and a highland plateau. The fascinating central massif is surrounded by laurel forests which have seen centuries pass by. This island calls for active exploration. The possibilities range from classic hiking, mountain biking, motorcycle or car touring to going for a drive in English classic cars. The waters around the island owe their warmth to the Gulf Stream, and they, too, beckon to be explored: be it through swimming and snorkelling, scuba diving, or just a laid-back boat trip which can also take you on an adventurous tour to watch whales and dolphins. In this brochure, we present our personal recommendations and insider tips so you can discover the island in any way you want!

Atlântico

MADEIRA is located about 1,000km south of Lisbon and about 300km off the coast of Africa. The island is about 54km

long and about 22km wide. The volcanic island rises 1,862m out of the 4,000m deep Atlantic Ocean. There is an impressive mix of small beaches, coastal cliffs, deep green valleys and a high alpine interior! There are no tropical diseases, no venomous animals and hardly any crime! There is a one hour time difference with central Europe and the flight time varies from 3.5 to 4.5 hours – feasible even for the reluctant air traveller.

MADEIRA’S PAST

Madeira has been inhabited for about 500 years. Vestiges of the past can be found preserved in the buildings of the historic city and in outstanding museums.

MADEIRA TODAY

is an island full of vitality, sports and culture. Excellent infrastructure – encompassing local transport, health care, schools and a small university, as well as cultural- and sports facilities – and the fact that there are no tropical diseases or crime but a perfect drinking water supply and political safety make living and holidaying on Madeira just wonderful.

‘CRAFTS’

Wickerwork has always been an important sideline for peasant farmers, allowing a diverse range of crafts to emerge. Camacha basketry-village is only about 15 minutes by car from the Galo Resort Hotels. For many women on Madeira, embroidery was a way to work at home and support their families during hard times. Bananas, sugar cane and Madeira wine are the agricultural products of the island. Visit the old steam-driven sugar cane mills and the wineries, home of the famous Madeira wine. Guided tours to visit these craftsmen are regularly organised by Galo Resort Hotels.

Music and Culture

A small theatre, its own classical orchestra, and a music college are the pillars for numerous musical activities – ranging from a folklore festival to the Funchal Jazz Festival. The museums are unmissable: the historical sugar museum, the Sacred Arts Museum, the Museum of Natural Science, as well as the Contemporary Arts Museum and Casa das Mudas Arts Centre. INSIDER-INTERVIEW with David Andrade

Funchal – my city!

David Andrade was born in Funchal where he spent his childhood and youth MSP: Are there any childhood memories that you connect with Funchal? David: On sundays I used to go with my parents and sister to the Marina, the international sailing yachts fascinated me. A very special atmosphere, a feeling of the big wide world which I wanted to get to know.. MSP: Do you have a favourite walk? David: I walk from the Hotel zone along the Av.Sá Carneiro down the harbour where, specially in winter you can watch the big cruise ships. I continue the Av. do Mar then turn to the left passing the regional parliament building. Now I walk through narrow old streets very lifely and pittoresque until I come down to the market and the old part of the town with all the fish restaurants. Here I come to Rua Sta.Maria, one of the oldest streets in Funchal with beautifully and originally painted doors done by local artists. MSP: Tell us a bit more about the old town. David: a few years ago it was started to restore the old part of Funchal. Houses were renovated and painted in a colourful way. Apart from the existing, new restaurants

and bars opened as well as little shops. The atmosphere, specially in the evening is very lively, locals and tourists mixing, you can eat well and relatively reasonable either fresh fish, or the typical meat dish Espetada. The many original bars and cafés invite for an after dinner drink. Who wants can continue to walk up to Sta. Maria Maior, visit the church of Socorro and enjoy the fabulous view over the Atlantic. MSP: Tell us a bit more about the market. David: The market of Funchal is famous. One should not miss going there on a Friday when farmers from all over the island come to sell their products. A unique mixture of colours, everything which grows on this fertile island is exposed here. In front of the entrance we have the flower „ladies“, selling lots of different colourful flowers. Photo shooters favourite. In the rear part we find the fish market. All fish which is caught in the Atlantic around the island is sold here, named the Black Espada fish. If you want to enjoy the architecture and the typical portuguese tiles go again on another day when there are less people. 18

PLAY WHERE THE CHAMPIONS PLAY! 3 golf courses, 2 of which are European Tour courses – who would have thought it!

Gerald Bretterbauer, an Austrian who lives and plays golf in Madeira, shares some tips. MSP: Golf in Madeira, what makes it so special? GB: Madeira means golf all year round. Indeed, Madeira is famous for its mild winter climate. But even in summer, temperatures hardly climb above 25°C. Madeira is (still) not known as a golf destination, so you always get tee times easily and golf courses are not as crowded as in other destinations. MSP: How would you describe the individual courses? GB: Santo da Serra is a 27-hole course where you can play 3 different versions. The Machico/Desertas combination is also played in the European Tour. Robert Trent Jones who has also designed Valderrama and Pebble Beach - has created this full-blooded championship course. You should already have a good length with a At the Palheiro Golf Club my woods mostly stay inside the bag. Precise playing and avoiding strategic bunkers preserve your score on these narrow fairways. Porto Santo Golf on the neighbouring island is worth a visit! You board the Porto Santo Line ferry in the early morning. In Porto Santo, you play a relaxed round, enjoy a fantastic meal at the beautiful club house and then take the ferry back home in the evening. On this course, which was planned by Severiano Ballesteros, you really have to play a complete game if you want to achieve a competitive score. MSP: Which course is your personal favourite? GB:Depending on how the mood takes me – either Santo or Palheiro. I don’t have any particular favourite. The Porto Santo course always manages to throw me off my game, in

the literal sense. I will be spending a week’s holiday there and then I will settle my score with the course. MSP: We’re meeting here, at the Galo Resort Hotels. Why should people spend their golfing holidays here? GB: Because of the great location. You’re staying directly by the sea, where the climate is best. It’s only a 12-minute drive to the Palheiro golf course and 20 minutes to the Santo da Serra course. The hotel is situated in between the two golf courses. GALO RESORT HOTELS GOLF TOURNAMENT Every year, at the beginning of November there is a big tournament open for all guests, organised by the Galo Resort Hotels. The tournament will be held at Santo da Serra Golf Club and the winner will compete in next year´s PROAM at the Madeira Open. INSIDER INTERVIEW HIKING with Christa Dornfeld

THE ISLAND OF PEDESTRIANS

Why there are more than 2000 km of hiking trails on an island which is only 54 km long and 23 km wide, and which of them are the most stunning? We meet up with the Austrian hiking guide and island insider to get some secret hiking tips from her. MSP: Christa, you have been living on the island for over 15 years now. Why did you choose Madeira in the first place? Christa: I grew up in the mountains of Austria and I didn’t want to shovel snow ever again. Madeira has got everything we were looking for. Only four hours on a plane separate us from the rest of our family, the climate is mild all year round, there are no tropical illnesses or poisonous animals and hardly any crime. MSP: How did you become a hiking guide? Christa: I’d always been on hiking and crosscountry skiing trips throughout Europe. When I was in Madeira 16 years ago, I met the Galo Resort Hotels’ Senior Manager, Mr Siegmund Bachmeier. He showed me many new trails for my first hiking book. Then one day, a guide at the Galo Resort Hotel dropped out and they asked me to fill in. I had so much fun doing

20

this that I stuck to it. Later, I completed a one-year training course and examination to become a certified Portuguese mountain guide. MSP: What is so special about hiking on Madeira? Christa: Madeira has always been an island of pedestrians. Goods were transported by ship from Funchal to the fishing villages and from there they were taken up to higher altitudes to mountain settlements and villages. Fields and vineyards are all terraced and very widely scattered around the villages. From there, all the fruit and vegetables that were harvested had to be taken down to the coastal villages and were then transported by ship to Funchal. Because of the mountainous landscape it would have been too complicated to build roads and that’s why a network of footpaths was created. Even today we frequently run into farmers carrying, say, fodder for their cow

the Galo Resort Hotels and useful information for self-guided hikers. MSP: You were just mentioning the mountains. Christa: Madeira is of volcanic origin and at its centre the island has an altitude of 1862m. That may not sound very high, but do not compare the island with the Alps! There you would normally start a hike at between 800-1000m. Add 1800m to that and you get to an altitude of 2800m. Madeira’s mountains give us exactly that impression. During some winter days the mountain peaks can be snowy while down at the coast you take a swim in the sea or bask in the warm sun. MSP: And the coastal paths? Christa: There are two kinds of coastal paths. Firstly, there are the pathways leading from the fishing villages uphill towards villages that are situated at a higher altitude and secondly there are connecting paths between the fishing villages along the coastline. Some of the trails that lead into the mountains have well over 2000 steps. Most of these paths are very well-kept and are still used frequently because it is simply quicker than waiting around for the next bus.

or freshly picked fruit and vegetables to their homes. MSP: The famous Levada hikes are also often mentioned in connection with Madeira. Christa: The Levadas are Madeira’s lifelines. These small water canals transport water from the mountains to the fields and from the more humid North to the drier South of the island. These canals – which in many cases are centuries old – require constant maintenance and care. That is the reason why next to every Levada there is also a small pathway. Because the canals only have an incline of 3m per 100m the hiking trails stay even for many kilometres into but also out of the valleys. MSP: Sounds like the hikes are very easy ones? Christa: There are very easy Levada hikes. However, there are Levadas which lead through rough terrain and some of them also run down steep rock walls. Such hikes can be dangerous and you have to be absolutely sure-footed. Sometimes you just have to turn around and take the same route back. This also applies to hikes in the mountains or close to the coast. Reliable hiking books or guided tours can be really helpful. I provide hiking tips to guests of 21

MSP: Please tell us your favourite TOP hikes.Christa: Number one: the mountain hike from Pico Arreiro to Pico Ruivo. Only people in really good shape can manage to get there and back again. Number two: the Ponta São Lourenço peninsula. The best time for visiting is either early morning or during late afternoon when the hordes of tourists have already left. Take good care in case of strong winds! Number three: the Alecrim Levada in the area around the 25 springs, leading to a small waterfall. It is also suitable for children, but take them by the hand in exposed spots. Number four: the Ribeira da Janela Levada in Porto Moniz. Start early to have time to enjoy a swim in the rock basins of Porto Moniz. Number five: the O`Moinho Levada from Camcha to Assomada, because this was the first Levada hike I did when I came to Madeira for the first time.. MSP: … and your famous “Magic Forest”? Christa: The forest isn’t in the running because for one it is just the most beautiful place on the island, but it can also be very unpredictable. In the course of just a few seconds and completely unexpected there can be thick wafts of mist and you completely lose your sense of direction. A situation like that can be really dangerous. Therefore it’s better to book a guided hike to the magic forest. MSP: What does suitable hiking equipment consist of? Christa: Ankle-high trekking shoes that are waterproof and have a suitable tread guaranteeing sure-footedness even on stony passages. Also, they need to be slip-proof on the mossy and wet patches next to the Levadas. Clothing should be worn “onion-style”. When you are active at altitudes of between 1400-1800m in the mountains, temperatures can change rapidly. You start off at 4°C but during the day it gets as warm as 25°C. You’ll also need rain protection: the best thing is a rain cape as it also protects from side winds. Cap, sunglasses and effective sun screen, because UV-exposure can be high. You’ll also need a suitably sized rucksack (for daytrips), some light food like sandwiches and at least 1.5 litres of water. Unfortunately, there are no cabins here, so often you have to be able to fend for yourself during the whole day. Take your cell phone with you and in case you’re planning a longer tour let your hotel know where you are headed. Every hiker should also take a small first aid kit with them. MSP: You work exclusively with Galo Resort Hotels. Why? Christa: When I first came to Madeira, I did not even know about 22

the Galo Resort Hotels. Caniço de Baixo was recommended to me as a great place to live. It’s not far from Funchal, not far from the airport and is situated at the sunny coast. Today, I live right next to the Galo Resort Hotels. At the Lido Galomar I got to know the Bachmeier family. My guests really appreciate the hotel’s location and the fact that it allows them to take the opportunity to take an after-hike swim in the sea at the hotel’s private bay. Both food and service are exceptional. Even a vegetarian like me has plenty of dishes to choose from. There is also an indoor pool, sauna, a fitness centre and a spa which offers a great variety of treatments. Every one of my guests has always been content. And even when a guest once made a complaint it was promptly resolved by the hotel staff. From the hotel you can reach any point on the island in about one hour’s drive. MSP: Which tour do you like to guide the most? Christa: My island crossing-tour. In 9 days we really cover every single meter of the island on foot, lengthwise of course. Every evening we return to the Galo hotel and at the next day we continue exactly at the point where we left off the day before.

MADEIRA THE NATURAL PARADISE What is an adrenaline junkie and wild girl doing on a tranquil island like Madeira?

Corina Bachmeier - ex-Portuguese Downhill Champion and big outdoor fan - explains: MSP: Corina, you´re known as a successful mountain biker, surfer, diver and enduro motorbiker. What made you so adventurous? Corina: I guess there are two reasons. One is family influence and the other the island where I grew up! Madeira offers the perfect combination for mountain and water activities. Since very young I started to explore the island next to my grandparents and parents. I discovered a world of possibilities and fun! Every weekend I was doing something new and still today I discover places in Madeira I have never been to! It´s simply amazing all the things you can experience here.

supply in a costumer-oriented way. We help customers find and book literally anything! MSP: Which adventure is in most demand? Corina: Canyoning is probably number one. It´s a kind of crosscountry river hike, where we abseil, slide or jump down the waterfalls. You can also try it as a beginner. It´s a secure and fun experience, and one of the best way´s to get in contact with the unspoiled nature of Madeira. MSP: And in second place? Corina: Mountain biking without a doubt! From easy to challenging Cross Country and Enduro tours, to (last but not least) amazing Down Hill tracks.

MSP: Can you then describe a typical „adventure day“ in Madeira? Corina: Well, you can start the day by hiking up to one of the highest peaks to watch the sunrise. Then go for a mountain bike ride until you reach the beach and spend the rest of the afternoon snorkeling, surfing or stand up paddling. Finally, finish the day with some snacks and Ponchas in a local bar whilst planning the next adventure day!

MSP: Any other outdoor activities you recommend for Madeira? Corina: Yes, sooo many!! Swimming with Dolphins, Scuba Diving, Trail Running, Snorkeling, Stand Up Paddeling, Kayaking, Paragliding, Horse Riding, and so many others.

MSP: In the meantime, you founded a company for outdoor activities. Why? Corina: The demand and the opportunities for outdoor experiences in Madeira have been increasing a lot over time. A few years ago, there was very little information about all these possibilities, so I just bundled the

MSP: What is your personal favourite? Corina: In the past it would have been mountain biking. Nowadays, I spend a lot of time riding my off-road motorbike, and to relax, I like to go out on my stand up paddle board or go for a dive. The ocean is the best energy booster! 27

INSIDER INTERVIEW: SCUBA DIVING with Stefan Maier

WHY THE ATLANTIC?!

Scuba diving in the Atlantic Ocean? Not the first thing that springs to mind when you are planning a scuba diving trip... We want to know from Stefan Maier why, actually, things are not quite as they seem. MSP: Stefan, you have been a scuba diving instructor in many places including the Red Sea and in the Caribbean. Why did you come to Madeira of all places? STEFAN: Like every other scuba diver, I was sceptical at first as well when thinking about diving in the Atlantic. When I heard that the Manta Diving Center diving base in Madeira was for sale, I had already sensed that the location had big potential, because, for one, the base is situated directly in the underwater national park. MSP: Were you also sceptical because of the cold water temperatures of the Atlantic? STEFAN: Yes, absolutely. That is a common prejudice. When I came to Madeira, however, I quickly learned that my biased opinion was completely wrong. The water temperatures of the sea around Madeira lie between 18°C and 25°C all year round. There are no thermoclines like in the Mediterranean, it’s perfect! MSP: Perfect location as well, with a very own reef? STEFAN: The MDC (Manta Diving Center) is located right at the rocky swimming bay belonging to the Galo Resort Hotels, a well-protected spot on the sun-kissed Southern coast of the island and right at the heart of the underwater national park. Because of the island’s volcanic origin, there are

also steep underwater rock faces. That’s why it is possible to start each dive from the mainland. The maximum walking distance from the MDC to the sea is less than one minute and once there, our guests are spoilt for choice: they can take a dive to one of our four reef spots with tunnels, caves, rock faces and depths between 5m and 34m. Every diving spot at the base is so large that you need 2-3 dives to get a good overview. The location is suitable for beginners as well as for advanced and professional divers who are very welcome to explore our underwater area outside of a group, but always in pairs. MSP: So this means no boat trips? STEFAN: Our reef at the base offers an incredible diversity for everyone who gets sick easily or just doesn’t feel comfortable on boats,. But for those who want to “sea” more, there are also trips with our very own aluminium speed boat where you can explore other diving spots such as Cap Garajau, the T-reef etc. Because of the MDC’s excellent location, this would only take us 5-20mins by boat. MSP: What can you see underwater? STEFAN: Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the underwater fauna and flora in Madeira is very interesting. Atlantic and tropical fish mix here. Dusky groupers, parrot fish, puffer fish, Atlantic cornetfish, garden eels and many more can be seen at 30

STEFAN: Diversity is key! We are really situated at a top location with a diverse, interesting diving area which is also part of the Madeira underwater national park. It is not only suited for experienced scuba divers but also for beginners and for snorkelling. We always strive to manage the MDC on a professional level by, for example, completely renewing our rental diving equipment every 2 years. Moreover, we are the only diving base in the Atlantic Ocean which is certified according to DIN/EN 14467 and ISO 24893 standards. In addition, we can also offer our diving guests a combined package – including accommodation. Most of our guests stay at the Galo Resort Hotels. There, they can chose between three and four-star accommodation offering many features: big sports and fitness areas, spas, indoor pools with saunas, outdoor pools, various restaurants, bars, childcare during school holidays etc. ... it all contribute to our guests’ wellbeing. MSP: Your favourite diving spot is…? STEFAN: … the arena, because of its diversity. There are huge schools of fish, dusky groupers and a beautiful dive-through tunnel which is bathed in light. MSP: Do you have any tips for divers who want to come to Madeira? STEFAN: Enjoy the Atlantic Ocean, leave your prejudices on the mainland and you’ll be surprised. MSP: Apart from diving, do you have any other tips? STEFAN: Approximately 70% of our planet is covered in water. You should plan your holiday activities accordingly…

our reef spots. If you are lucky you might even catch a glimpse of a monk seal. MSP: Why is the diving base called Manta Diving Center? STEFAN: The base is located the southernmost tip of the island. During summer months (July, August, September) there are manta rays passing by the island. MSP: Any other big fish? STEFAN: There are also big dusky groupers which are used to humans and almost tame: they have stayed at the same spot for over 25 years. You can also observe monk seals, with more and more sightings every year. They are a protected species and are used to us by now. Spring is also a very impressive time of year. Sting rays swim about in shallow water and it is not unusual to count more than 10 animals of any size during a single dive. MSP: Give me five reasons why people should come to Madeira to scuba dive. STEFAN: First of all, because of the agreeable water temperatures throughout the year, secondly, because we’ve got our own reef, thirdly, because there is an interesting mix of Atlantic and tropical influences, number four, the great range of biodiversity in the protected underwater national park and number five, because the location is also suitable for divers with “non-diving” partners, because the island has a lot to offer even on the mainland. MSP: Over the last ten years the Manta Diving Center has always been among the top three diving bases of the Atlantic as chosen by the German magazine “tauchen” (Diving). Why? 31

INSIDER-INTERVIEW Whales and Dolphins with Barbara Bachmeier

Photos: Claudia Gomes Lobosonda

Out of the deep, straight into the heart! An encounter with the peaceful sea mammals touches everyone. Barbara talks about her very personal encounter and how she was able to watch these animals! MSP: Barbara, you were born on Madeira. When did you get to see your first whale or dolphin? Barbara: When I was a kid I was swimming in the Lido Galomar with my sister when a pod of dolphins swam by. MSP: Does this happen often? Barbara: Right by the coast you don´t see the animals that often but if you go out about 1 km by boat you almost always get to see dolphins! Quite often I also see them out of my office window or the pool terrace. MSP: What about whales? Barbara: There are whales all year around off Madeira’s coast. The big whales especially, such as fin whales, Bryde’s- or sperm whales, are solitary. The Whale Watching boats have their own ‘Vigias’ (whale-watching towers), which have high-quality binoculars with which they look for animals far up the coast and direct the boats to the animals. The small pilot whales live in groups and are more philopatric. MSP: What do you feel when you are with the animals? Barbara:Last week I was on board a whale-watching boat in the morning hours. We came across a group of pilot whales and turned off the engine. Madeira was about to wake up and the sun was just rising. The animals were completely quiet and all you could hear was the soft lapping of the waves and the steady breathing sound of the animals. It was so relaxing, peaceful and you could feel the freedom of these animals. MSP: You also mentioned swimming with dolphins. Could you tell us more? Barbara: Swimming with dolphins is one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

You are on these wild animals’ territory and they come very close – nosy and playful. The animals decide themselves how they present themselves and how they interact with us. MSP: Is there no interfering with the animals? Barbara: There are strict guidelines. A biologist has to be on board to decide whether it is the right situation or not. A maximum of 7 people is allowed to go into the water. If there are young animals with the group or if the animals display certain behaviour, you leave the animals alone. There is no guarantee of seeing animals. You go out to visit the animals in open water but you have to wait until you are invited by them. MSP: Your personal tip? Barbara: No matter whether you’re just watching the animals or hoping to get to swim with them, a trip out to sea is a must when on Madeira. The best thing to do would be to invite me to join you. I’d love to come! :-))

INSIDER MOUNTAIN BIKING with Corina Bachmeier

MSP: Corina, why isn´t Madeira known for mountain biking? Corina: A few years back, when I was still involved in mountain bike racing, it was still considered a fringe sport in Madeira. However, in the last few years, mountain biking has become more and more popular among locals. The main reason for this is because Madeira offers unique natural conditions for biking. The island can be seen as one big mountain! All year round you can ride a variety of tours, through breathtaking views, jungle-like forests and fantastic trails. MSP: Do guests have to bring their own bikes? Corina: Bringing your own bike will imply transportation fees with most airlines. As an alternative, you can rent a bike with LOKOLOKO. However, since there is very little official information on bike routes and due to security reasons, I strongly recommend to take a guided tour! MSP: What is the ideal season for mountain biking in Madeira? Corina: All year round, really! The summers are never too hot and in the winter temperatures are also pleasant and mild. However, more and more bikers and outdoor athletes are coming to Madeira in the Winter to train for the upcoming season. Many of them combine their training with the Fitness Center of the Galo Resort Hotels. 34

INTERVIEW: THE HOTELIER with ROLAND BACHMEIER

Roland Bachmeier and his daughters, Corina and Barbara who are also already working at the hotel.

Holidays with personal service! Roland Bachmeier, hotelier, innovative thinker, visionary, host and a passionate resident of the island, speaks about his vision of a perfect holiday in Madeira MSP: Mr Bachmeier, why did you come to Madeira? RB: My parents emigrated to the island. Back then, I was only 15 and after I finished school and completed my education at a College for Hotel Management in Germany and Austria, I followed my parents here. MSP: … but you didn’t stay here, did you? RB: When I was younger I wanted to see the world. Also, I wanted to gain more experience in hotel management. I spent the following 10 years working on cruise ships and later on in high-ranking positions at several big hotel chains, mostly in Asia. MSP: Why did you come back to Madeira? RB: I realised that the island had immense potential and offered high living standards. Even though its surface area is relatively small, Madeira offers varied scenery, a broad range of activities and a fantastic seascape. MSP: You are known here as a pioneer? RB: My colleagues often glance sceptically at some of the things we do, but then they also try to copy them, because they see that we are successful. Back in the day we were the first hotel which was not situated in Funchal itself. Then we became hiking specialists. Later, we were the first hotel to boast its own spa and now we are the only hotel offering a broad range of sporting

activities, and at the Alpino Atlantico hotel we are renowned because of our Ayurveda well-being centre. MSP: Do all the copycats out there bother you? RB: No, that means that the decisions we made were the right ones. Furthermore, copies are usually not of the same quality as the original. My family’s roots and mine lie in a more cetral europe culture. We know about the wishes of our guests, because they correspond to our own mentality. MSP: Why focus on a active hotel? RB: Because this is what fits Madeira. The whole family is very active as well and Madeira offers lots of opportunities for that. We’ve just built a hotel to match. We can see that the trend is going towards a more healthy lifestyle - outdoor activities surrounded by the beauty of nature contribute substantially to one´s well-being. Our guests like to be active and to discover the island on the move. That´s why we set up a hiking center, a mountainbike center and LOKOLOKO (see page 22) direcly on site. Our swimming bay is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, diving (Manta Diving Center), SUP, canoeing and much more. Additionally our hotel boasts a public sports and fitness club with 600 members and 12 sport instructors. Our guests can make use of the 36

training equipment 12 hours a day and participate in the numerous sports classes. MSP: How does that mix with Yoga and Ayurveda? RB: Please do not confuse sports with loud, animated games and parties at the pool. Tranquil, almost meditative morning jogging along the course of a levada complement our original range of well-being and spa treatments, for example massages, body wraps and Ayurveda. MSP: Ayurveda? RB: Yes. At the Alpino Atlantico you can find a small, but highly professional Ayurveda cure centre, where we also offer preventive health care and the whole range of Ayurveda treatements. MSP: You have received many awards for your hotel. Which are the most important ones for you? RB: Some of the TUI HOLLYS which the TUI travel agency awards only to the top 100 hotels. The “Top Hotel Award 2013” for the Galosol hotel, awarded by the holiday testing website holidaycheck and the Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor. MSP: Which environmental protection measures have you implemented? RB: We have one of Madeira’s biggest solar-powered water heating systems. We also systematically use the waste heat from air conditioning units and refrigeration systems for water treatment and have our own system for salt water purification. We only use Levada canals for watering and consistently try to save energy. The whole management of the hotel operates in consistency with environmentally-friendly criteria. We conserve resources, try to reduce waste, and clean using environmentally-friendly detergents. Our

hotels have been certified by independent auditors as leading eco-friendly hotels (Travellive Gold, Green Key, TÜV,..) MSP: What about social responsibility? RB: Our fundamental commitment to social responsibility extends far beyond legal requirements. Continuous development and training, workplace evaluations, additional health insurance and even life insurance for our staff. Many of our employees have already been with us for decades. We collaborate with local schools in developing educational programs. Furthermore we open our staff canteen to struggling families. MSP: Do you use local products? RB: Absolutely. Whenever possible, we only buy local and organic products. They are not only fresh, they also shorten transporting ways, small farmers are being supported and our guests can experience the unique taste of the healthy Madeirian food. MSP: … and so we come full circle. RB: Yes. I think that in order to maintain one’s credibility today, one also has to act responsibly. In taking care of your physical and mental health and being active, you are simultaneously also keeping an eye on your diet and caring about the environment. We manage our hotel in such a way that we would happily spend our holidays here ourselves. MSP: What will the future hold for Madeira? RB: Travel time to the island is short; it boasts a healthy ecosystem, balanced climate and low crime rates. Madeira is a huge adventure playground, it is a natural well-being island full of tranquillity and nature, surrounded by a clean ocean. Best future! 37

INSIDER-INTERVIEW CANIÇO DE BAIXO with Sigi Bachmeier Hotel Galosol**** Onda Revital fitness centre Hotel Galomar*** LOKOLOKO Lido Galomar swimming bayManta Diving Center Hotel Alpino Atlantico**** Ayurveda cure centre

CANIÇO DE BAIXO – the perfect spot! The Contrata villa development in Caniço is the most popular place to live or spend a holiday in Madeira. Why? MSP: Mr Bachmeier, you came to the island during the 60s. Why did you come to Caniço de Baixo? Sigi: Back then, I still had a free choice, because Madeira was empty; most of the land was not developed yet. It was simple, really: I wanted my hotels to be situated right next to the sea in order for my guests to be able to relax at the seaside after a trip or a hiking tour. Access to the sea was indispensible. It took me a long time to find the perfect spot. Caniço was the locals’ favourite place to go and have a swim and there must surely have been a reason for that. MSP: Which is…? Sigi: The bay lies at the Southern tip of the island, has a mild climate and is protected against heavy seas. MSP: Why did people call you “louco”? Sigi: Yes, they called me ‘louco’ (crazy), because I was the first one who built a hotel outside of Funchal. Tourism was firmly in English hands back then and people came to the island by ship and brought their own butlers and Rolls Royces. Today, many people would like to own my hotel properties. People prefer to live and stay in green surroundings and it takes less

than 15 minutes by public transport (bus) to travel right to Funchal’s old town centre. MSP: But in order to be able to discover the whole island, wouldn’t guests have to change accommodation? Sigi: No, ever since the motorway was built this is no longer necessary. From Caniço you can reach every point on the island by car in an hour at the most. MSP: What else can be said in favour of Caniço de Baixo? Sigi: That the Galo Resort hotels are situated there, of course! But, joking aside, the airport transfer only takes 15 mins yet there is no noise from incoming/outgoing planes. The hotels are situated halfway between the two golf courses (travel distance: 10 to 15 mins). The village is very quiet. There is no drive-through traffic, yet the main road is easily accessible. We have a good infrastructure, an English speaking doctor, small shops and restaurants. The gardens throughout the Contracta villa development are all full of beautiful, very well trained, old tropical plants. The people living here are businessmen, artists and celebrities who can hide discreetly here. It is a great place to go for a walk during the evenings. 38

INSIDER INTERVIEW CILINARY DELIGHTS with Ricardo Reis LOCAL AND HEALTHY

Ricardo Reis, Executive Chef at the Galo Resort hotels: Together with my team, I adapt to the hotel’s motto: “Discover Madeira – sporty and active – relax in a healthy way”. In my kitchen, local recipes are cooked in a modern style and international recipes are refined using local ingredients. Whenever possible, we only buy our ingredients from regional, organic producers. This stands for a light and healthy cuisine, vegetarian dishes with exquisite aroma and a taste of the South ESPADA: the black predator from the depths of the ocean The espada (black scabbardfish) is a specialty which is only available in Madeira in this form. The fish lives at depths of over 800m and is long line fished in the traditional way. It doesn’t have scales and its flesh is impeccably white, with a pleasantly neutral taste

„Espada em vinhos e alhos“ - Espada

in a wine and garlic sauce

Ingredients:

1kg black scabbardfish (alternatively, use e.g. sea bass) Sea salt and white pepper 5-8 garlic cloves 5 tbs. wine vinegar 40 ml wine 1 small bunch marjoram Good quality oil for frying Preparation: The night before preparing this dish, marinate the fish filets in wine, salt, crushed garlic, vinegar and marjoram. Fry the fish in hot oil on both sides until golden brown. Take the filets out of the pan and dispose of the oil. Put the marinade into the pan (don’t clean it!) and let it reduce for a few minutes. Dress the fish and add some sauce. Serve it with sweet potatoes and vegetables on the side. Another possibility would be to serve fried banana with the fish. The contrast between the sweetness of the banana and the garlicky taste of the fish is a very interesting alternative. 40

INSIDER-INTERVIEW Bathing with great-grandma Herta

Beach fun all year round

Where do Madeirans go bathing? Herta Bachmeier has been living on Madeira for 50 years. Where does she, as a semi-local, take her kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to swim? MSP:Mrs Bachmeier, can you swim in the sea at all while on Madeira? Herta B: Yes, all year round, actually. The water temperature varies between 18°C and 24°C. MSP: Where are the places to swim? Supposedly, there are only cliffs on the coast... Herta B: That´s true. The coast is mostly cliffs. But there are also bays with sandy or pebble beaches, marvellous lava pools and baths such as the Lido Galomar. That’s where everything started for us. MSP: What is the Lido Galomar? Herta B: When we settled down in Madeira, it was a small steep path in the cliff leading to a small bay. This bay was the most popular bathing spot among Madeirans. It is protected from waves and has a lava tongue jutting out into the water, where snorkelling is magnificent. This piece of land with its lido was for sale and this was the start of the Galo Resort Hotels. MSP: And how did the lido evolve? Herta B: My husband built a stairway into the bay and a small snack bar. Later on he and my son Roland enhanced it. Today, you can take the convenient lift down; there are big terraces between the rocks, modern amenities and a good restaurant. In addition, there is a salt water swimming pool. For years, the lido has regularly been awarded the Blue Flag for its quality. Manta Diving

Centre’s diving school is located here too, as is a kayak hire office – you can take a kayak and explore the area of the underwater nature reserve. MSP: Underwater nature reserve? Herta B: 25 years ago, we helped to have this approx. 5km long part of the shore protected. No fishing, angling, harpooning, no motor boats. The Lido Galomar is the only hotel within this nature reserve. MSP: What about beaches? Herta B: There are many different beaches around the island. Most of them are rock and pebble beaches. But in between you can find a number of natural sandy beaches with lava sand. There are also two beaches (Calhata and Machico) with (imported) white sand. MSP:What are your personal top 5 recommendations? Number one: The Lido Galomar - comfortable, clean and with beautiful snorkelling spots. Number two: The rock-bathing basins of Porto Moniz. Number three: Prainha, a small sandy beach in the east. Number four: The small sandy beach close to Seixal. Number five: The beach close to Faial. 48

INSIDER INTERVIEW AYURVEDA with Birgit Moukom What is Ayurveda? Ayurveda is the world’s oldest known healing art still in practice today. Its origin dates back to the advanced ancient Indian Vedic civilisation and represents a continuous tradition of more than 5,000 years. The term itself derives from Sanskrit and literally means ‘Science of Life’. The first written evidence of Ayurveda is found in the ancient Indian Vedas, the Books of Wisdom. Thus, Ayurveda is the first systematic collection of medical knowledge. Through experience and constant experimentation, this oldest medical science known to mankind has evolved throughout the centuries. Nowadays, the integration of exterior factors such as environmental conditions, climate, seasons and diet enables the transfer of the Ayurvedic principles to the life conditions of people in the West. Ayurveda aims for a long healthy life and personal responsibility. For us, it is not of particular importance to adopt a foreign culture; rather, we seek to integrate its principles and apply them to our situation.
