How are skills handled in Gamelearn’s programs? Continuous Learning
M T
P
Continuous learning is the ability to assess one’s own knowledge needs (theoretical or practical), adopting the necessary measures to acquire this knowledge and putting it into practice, while maintaining a flexible and open attitude to learning throughout one’s career.
The case resolution system in Merchants requires the student to undergo a process of continuous improvement throughout the course, a process that is monitored through the personalized feedback and coaching system built into the negotiation simulator. The student must accept constructive criticism, apply advice and adopt continuous learning to resolve the negotiation cases presented in the course of the program. Triskelion provides several specific lessons related to the concept of continuous improvement, which is, in turn, an essential element of the Triskelion personal productivity system. Continuous learning is crucial in the Pacific leadership simulator. The learning and development of team members, as well as personal learning and development (of the leader) are indispensable elements for achieving the objectives defined in the course.
Self-Confidence
M T
P
Self-Confidence is a belief in one’s own ability to tackle tasks and
The three courses that make up the Gamelearn package represent an intellectual challenge for the student. All of them require effort and dedication in order to complete. Overcoming the different challenges improves students’ self-confidence when facing situations in real life. The simulator-based learning system allows the user unlimited practice and therefore learn from the experience. Learning this way is much quicker and more effective than in real life, because the simulator makes it possible to experiment without real risks or costs. Facing simulated situations and observing the outcomes of our actions contributes in a very significant way to increasing self-confidence for facing the same types of situations in real life. Police officers, military personnel, surgeons and pilots use simulators to enhance their effectiveness and reduce errors. All courses are based on incremental levels of difficulty and make users confront increasingly complex tasks and problems, thereby contributing to improving their self-confidence.
Self-Control
M T
P
Self-Control is the ability to keep one’s emotions in check and restrain negative actions when provoked, faced with opposition or hostility from others, or when working under stress. It also includes the ability to keep up one’s stamina under continuing stress. The three courses in the package are designed to provoke a controlled level of stress in the student. The situations to be resolved in the simulators are designed to cause errors and, through this, learning. These situations, especially in the
Gamelearn
Each of the three products in the skills package places special emphasis on the need of each student to analyze his or her strengths and areas of improvement. Lessons, lectures and practical exercises explain the need to adopt a philosophy of continuous improvement, both on the part of the individual and of the team being led.
problems and to select the right approach. This includes also the ability to hold onto that confidence under increasingly challenging circumstances.
06
negotiation and leadership simulators, require the user to control his or her emotions and resist impulsive reactions to avoid negative consequences in the story plot.
Gamelearn
Self-Awareness
M T
P
Self-awareness is the ability to understand our strengths and weaknesses, as well as the motivations and values that underlie our line of action. In each of the three training programs, the simulators and personalized feedback systems analyze students’ strengths and weaknesses. This feedback, is an observation of the outcomes of one’s actions and analysis of the mistakes made clearly contribute to developing self-awareness.
Information Seeking
M T
P
Information seeking is the desire to know more about things, people or issues. It implies going beyond the routine questions, and “digging” and pressing for precise information. All of the courses require the student to seek information, both inside and outside the game. In some cases to use this information during the negotiation cases, in others to solve problems and, in general, to be able to advance in the training program.
Coaching
an individual’s capacity to learn and improve. The goal of coaching is to encourage others, transfer knowledge, develop the skills of the individual being coached. This skill is mainly developed through the leadership and team management course. In that course, concepts such as development (both team and individual), continuous improvement, empowerment and coaching are used constantly. It is necessary to apply all of them to make it through all the levels of the course.
Communicating Effectively N M PP Communicating effectively is the ability to send and receive information effectively. As the sender, it means expressing yourself clearly so that information is understood by the receiver(s) in the way it was intended. On the receiving side, effective communicators demonstrate respectful understanding of the other person’s position, listen actively, and ask questions to seek comprehensive understanding of the message. They master verbal and non-verbal techniques. The key to successfully closing the different negotiation cases included in Merchants is the ability to understand the interests and concerns of the other party in order to reach agreements that satisfy these interests. A large portion of the course content is focused on developing the ability to communicate effectively, with special attention to active listening, assertive communication, and body language.
P
Coaching involves the genuine intent to foster the learning or development of others through a conviction regarding
The leadership model developed in Pacific rests on a fundamental pillar: communication. It develops concepts such as active listening, assertiveness, communication processes, giving and receiving feedback...
07
Work-Life Balance
T
P
Work-Life Balance is the ability to resolve the conflicts that frequently arise between work life and personal life, between individual and professional goals, and between the values of the organization and one’s own.
The model for managing people taught in Pacific recognizes the importance of motivation and development of the people on the team, and therefore emphasizes the need to guarantee work-life balance for the team.
Steady Focus
M T
P
Steady Focus means commitment with key outcomes. It requires a blend of long-term thinking, pragmatism and perseverance, and has been described as “steering a steady course through uncharted or difficult waters.” One of the four pillars of the Triskelion System is “focus.” Moreover, it complements the other pillars, which are the development of longterm thinking, the definition of objectives, and the formulation of concrete action plans. Merchants forces students to develop their long-term thinking and to concentrate on achieving goals. Moreover, it stresses the need to consider results and maintaining relationships in the long run and not just short-term results.
M T
P
Flexibility is the ability and willingness to adapt to and work effectively in a variety of situations. Flexibility means understanding and appreciating differing and opposing perspectives on an issue, adapting one’s approach as situations change, and accepting change in the organization or in one’s own job Resolving the negotiation cases presented in Merchants requires students to learn to adapt to changing situations. The only way to finish the course is to be capable of understanding, accepting and adapting to differing and even opposing perspectives, learning all the benefits that this involves along the way. Pacific develops different skills related to leadership through the simulator, the lessons and the lectures. One of them is flexibility.
Change Management
T
P
Change Management is the ability to support a change initiative; it involves helping the organization’s members understand what the change means to them, and providing the ongoing guidance and support needed to sustain enthusiasm and commitment to the change process. One of the foundations of the Triskelion system is proactivity. Development of this skill includes change management on a personal level. On a team level, change management is addressed specifically in Pacific as one of the essential skills within the leadership model.
Gamelearn
The main goal of the personal productivity system developed in Triskelion, called TKSystem, is to increase productivity while reducing stress. One concept that is ubiquitous in the course is that of balance. It places special emphasis on time management to be able to achieve both professional and personal goals.
Flexibility
08
Conflict Management
M P
Gamelearn
Conflict Management is the ability to face conflicts, which involves stimulation, regulation and resolution of the conflicts that arise between two or more parties. Merchants is, at heart, a conflict-resolution course, and therefore all of its content and practice are aimed at perfecting the students’ ability to resolve conflicts. Pacific includes conflict-resolution in its simulator as one of the fundamental tools for managing teams. Also, several lessons, lectures, tests... deal with this issue.
Impact and Influence
M N PP
Impact and Influence is the ability to influence, persuade or convince others to adopt a specific course of action. It also involves building support, agreement or commitment to a specific course of action. The key foundation of the leadership course is influence. This skill is developed in depth through the Pacific program content. Merchants develops the ability to understand the interests and concerns of the other party, an essential first step to being able to construct a message or proposal capable of motivating people and inspiring commitment. In addition, through the simulator you learn how to construct and communicate creative proposals capable of satisfying the needs of the other party and of building mutually beneficial long-term relationships.
Initiative
T
P
Initiative is the ability to take action proactively. The design of Merchants’ simulator makes it essential that students have the ability to look ahead and innovate to resolve the cases. The only way of resolving the different situations presented in the course is by using creativity and generating innovative alternatives. One of the skills students develop in Triskelion is proactivity. Proactivity is the ability to assume responsibility, to change things, to anticipate events and introduce innovations, autonomy, the capacity to promote and drive initiatives, continuous learning (Triskelion is the Celtic symbol for continuous learning)—including learning from mistakes. Triskelion teaches that everyone has the ability to change things, that we’re not passive subjects in our lives and work, and that it is our responsibility to take the initiative to improve what can be improved and change what we don’t like. The leadership course Pacific develops inherent abilities such as “proactivity,” as well as self-criticism and continuous improvement and, with them, the ability to tolerate error and learn from mistakes.
Innovation and Creativity
M T
P
Innovation and creativity mean being open to new ideas and taking new approaches to go beyond the conventional and find better ways of managing issues. Innovation involves a mindset of seeking out creative ideas and implementing them. The three training programs included in the platform contribute
09
significantly to developing students’ creativity. Each and every one of them requires the use of different, innovative and creative solutions to resolve the problems that come up in the different levels, whether this means resolving a negotiation case (Merchants), working out clues and riddles (Triskelion), or finding the way of to get off the island, and motivate and unite the team around a common goal (Pacific).
accountable for results is an inherent attribute of leadership. It also includes the courage to take risks, and taking the necessary actions to ensure that members of the organization accept and support the vision to accomplish goals.
Integrity
Triskelion is a comprehensive personal productivity system based on the definition of goals, formulation of action plans, and use of new technologies to facilitate project management, organization of the team’s work, and tracking the work of everyone involved in the project. It develops skills such as definition of vision, prioritization, proactivity, responsibility, commitment... all essential skills of a leader.
P
Integrity means acting with rectitude and honesty. Integrity refers to the importance of actions being consistent with words. People with integrity clearly communicate their intentions, ideas and feelings directly to others, and are ready to act with honesty even when facing a complicated negotiation. Each of the three training programs included in this package uphold integrity in terms of one’s self and others. We treat this skill as a necessary instrument for being able to close mutually beneficial agreements that guarantee long-term relationships (Merchants), for managing our work and personal life (Triskelion), and for managing a team (Pacific).
Leadership
M T
Conflict-resolution is a never-ending responsibility of a leader. Although this skill is addressed in depth in the Pacific course, Merchants definitely complements the training in this area.
Negotiation
M P
Negotiation is the ability to discuss in a clear and coherent way, reconciling different positions in order to reach agreements that are satisfactory to everyone for the purpose of achieving the proposed goals.
P
Leadership is the ability and desire to lead others, including teams of people. It involves leading with a positive attitude, energy, resilience and stamina. It also includes taking action to provide adequate support and resources to others, and removing obstacles to success. Holding yourself and others
Merchants is essentially a negotiation course, and therefore all of its content and practice are aimed at perfecting the students’ negotiation skills. Thanks to the simulator and the negotiation cases (real ones), the student not only learns techniques and tools directly applicable

to their real-world negotiations, they will also be able to put their new knowledge into practice. The simulator guarantees experiential learning through practice, observing the results and receiving constant and personalized feedback.

Drive to Deliver Results
M T
P
Drive to Deliver Results is the commitment and drive to produce deliverables and achieve successful outcomes at both an individual and team level. It includes the demonstration of enthusiasm and pride in accomplishing tasks and achieving goals, as well as a drive to continuously achieve higher levels of performance. The lessons in the course are highly focused on transmitting to users the need to achieve the defined goals, track them, and constantly measure results, not only in the short term but also in the long term. The design of Merchants forces students to constantly assess results and understand that, whatever they do, the final measure of their success is exclusively the outcome of each of their negotiations. Goal-orientation is almost an obsession throughout the Triskelion program. As explained in previous sections, the TKSystem is built around a long-term vision, with definition of strategies and formulation of concrete action plans that turn these strategies into results. The entire methodology of Pacific is focused on the definition of a long-term vision that gives meaning to the team, the execution of concrete actions that turn this strategy into results and an unbreakable commitment to the goals of the team.
Analytical Thinking
M P
Analytical Thinking is the ability to extract conclusions and develop forecasts as a result of obtaining information from different sources and establishing cause-effect relationships. Each of the cases in Merchants is a complex situation to be resolved. Resolution of each case involves deep and solid analysis of complex situations and their causes. Without this preliminary step, it’s impossible to generate the potential solutions or alternatives for resolving the case. One of the abilities worked on throughout the Pacific course is analysis of complex situations, generation and assessment of alternatives, and decision-making.
Planning, Organizing & Coordinating M T P Planning,OrganizingandCoordinatinginvolvesproactivelyplanning, establishing priorities and allocating resources. It is expressed by developing and implementing increasingly complex plans. As an essential part of the Triskelion system, students are trained to identify priorities, set goals and track results. In Pacific, in the “Potential pillar, concepts like empowerment and coaching are addressed, and the student is given systems and processes to properly define goals, identify priorities and constantly track results. The first step to resolving each of the negotiation cases presented in Merchants is to identify priorities and set goals. An agreement
11
can only be reached if the goals are fully met. Strategy definition, preparation of the process, and long-term impact analysis of decisions are a constant throughout this course.
Problem Solving
M T
P
The three Gamelearn training programs use a format based on posing problems to the student which he or she must be able to resolve creatively to advance through the different levels. Each level, each phase, each negotiation case, each test... represents a problem of some type, in many cases a totally real one, which the student must learn to analyze and resolve. Given the high degree of complexity of these tests, the intellectual effort required to complete each of these courses is considerable.
Tolerance to Pressure
M T
Triskelion is not only a personal productivity course but also a system designed to maintain responsibilities under control, make decisions and keep stress at bay, and therefore it helps the student improve his or her tolerance to pressure. One of the skills developed in Pacific, as yet another skill that a leader must master, is tolerance to pressure.
Decision-Making
M T
P
Decision-Making is the ability to make the decisions that are necessary for achieving goals flexibly and proactively, supported by relevant information to facilitate the selection of the best alternative (through consultation of the most appropriate sources, contrasting it and integrating it) and assessing the assumption of certain risks in situations of uncertainty.
P
Tolerance to Pressure is the ability to show stamina in tense or complicated situations, when faced with obstacles, unusual workloads or paces, while maintaining the same level of quality in the work done. Merchants teaches how to plan each negotiation before entering the proposal phase to achieve the best possible outcome. Each negotiation case is an intellectual challenge and requires great
Resolving each of the cases in Merchants involves making decisions and assuming risks constantly, although, thanks to the simulator, these skills can be practiced without any real-world cost or risk. Triskelion promotes a spirit of proactivity, which means that the student must assume responsibility, assume risks, and make decisions. Several lessons and lectures are focused on developing systems and processes for making decision-making
Gamelearn
Problem Solving is understanding a situation by breaking it down into smaller pieces, or tracing the implications in a step-by-step manner. Problem solving includes the ability to identify patterns or connections and to identify key issues in complex situations.
concentration and perseverance to resolve. In addition, the virtual negotiators are very demanding and oblige the student to be flexible in the form and the conditions of his or her counter proposals, while at the same time remaining firm in the essence: the goals to be achieved. Development of this ability is essential for mastering resilience.
12
a more effective and efficient process. Pacific also works on analysis of complex situations, generation/ evaluation of alternatives and decision-making.
Gamelearn
Teamwork
T
P
Teamwork is the ability to establish participatory relationships and work collaboratively with other people. As part of a team, these individuals must share their resources and knowledge, and match up interests to accomplish the organization’s goals. Specifically, the Pacific model deals with the distribution of roles and responsibilities, the development of processes, and tools for making the team efficient and effective. Techniques are developed for boosting the cohesion, involvement and commitment of the team. It deals in depth with “synergy” as an essential feature of high-performance teams. The comprehensive productivity system promoted by Triskelion offers ideas, processes and tools for creating efficient and dynamic teams which facilitate the permeability of knowledge among the team and allow the team to collaborate and share knowledge.
Customer Service
M P
Customer Service involves a desire to identify and serve the organization’s customers (both internal and external). It also means focusing one’s efforts on understanding and meeting the needs of customers.
Merchants develops students’ skills for active listening and, above all, detecting the interests of the other party. The goal is to learn to understand these interests and expectations to be able to reach agreements that satisfy these interests and meet or exceed the customer’s expectations. Always with one goal in mind: satisfying the interests of both the customer and our organization in order to construct long-term agreements. Pacific contains diverse elements of service leadership in which the customer is placed at the top of the pyramid, and the entire leadership model is developed around serving the customer.
