Kzn Drag Racing events at Dezzi have been a huge success. It has brought drag racing forward with old racers jumping back into their race cars whilst still attracting the best drag racers from across the country. We wish them well in their future events and thank them for allowing us to be their media sponsor thus far. It has been over a year at our new premises and we love being in the heart of the city. The plans for next year are underway and we are currently in talks with a few partners in New York over a 1st world concept that could possibly revolutionise this industry as we know it. For now we shall remain tight lipped.

I never once thought in the past 6 years of opening Gas Magazine that I would be here on my laptop typing out the editorial for issue 35 with the same passion and smile on my face. 6 years ago I sat on my bed and came up with the concept of a free issue motoring publication that is available to everyone. The Issuu app and the gasmagazine.co.za have now made it possible to reach the world.

85% of success is down to hard work, dedication, passion, commitment, tolerance and hunger, the other 15% is ability. Till next year you can find me wedding shopping as I finally make a woman out of my baby girl. GOD blesses you all.

AUTO X Porsche, the most ridiculed supercar brand in the super industry. For decades, the Porsche brand was pointed and laughed at because of the placement of the vehicles powerhouse but the following was still strong despite this ridicule. Now here in the present, the opposite is spoken of Porsche. Now every supercar manufacturer wants to know what are the engineers at Porsche headquarters Stuttgart are up to. Decades of various models and engineering has produced the pinnacle of driving performance from a rear engine supercar which others have tried but cannot come anywhere close to a Porsches precision and everyday usability.

On Sunday 8 November 2015 Porsche Club KZN drivers competed at the final Auto X event of 2015. The event was sponsored by Amazing Glaze and hosted by the Porsche Club KZN in the parking lot of Sibaya Casino. It was the final round of the club’s Auto X series to determine the annual driver of the year champion. The event started at 9:00am and finished at about 12:00 noon. This event also marked the fourth renewal of Amazing Glaze’s annual sponsorship of the Porsche Club KZN’s Auto X series. Free snacks & drinks were supplied by Amazing Glaze to all participants, club members and invited guests.

Personally from my experiences, yes a Ferrari is loud and flamboyant and ever so passionate but sit in a Porsche. It can be driven around like a normal luxury coupe and when the fast pedal is influenced by your foot, it turns into a tire gripping precise weapon of performance which even then it is done with ease. All of this that I speak about was shown on 8 November 2015 at the Porsche Clubs Auto X event held at Sibaya Casino, sponsored by Amazing Glaze. Auto X is a series of events held by the Porsche Club through the year with the mandate to name a driver of the year.

I was greeted by Porsches of different eras lined up like soldiers on the battle front ready and ever so eager to manoeuvre around the predefined track that was laid out for the day. The quite technical track was laid out to test the drivers and vehicles to their best abilities for the various categories that they were being judged on. What a magnitude of sensations engulfed the crowd when the engines revved up followed by the sounds of tire stretching around the track with a blaze of colours flying past you. A truly spectacular site for any spectator petrol head or not.

Whilst drivers were battling it out, the few that weren’t in, were sharing stories of their experiences and indulging in the rather sumptuous spread laid out by the team from Amazing Glaze. As the hours past, the smiles widened with the increasing smell of burning rubber signaling the event was coming to an end. The winners of the various categories were announced with much anticipation from the drivers. All in all a wonderful event carried out by Amazing Glaze and the Porsche Club.

Everyone left as a winner.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS WITH ASHISH

One-On-One with David Perel

Name: David Perel Age: 30 Height: 1.74 Weight: 73kg facebook.com/davidperelracing instagram.com/davidperel youtube.com/davidperel

I’m curious… How many races have you taken part in altogether? In karting I am not sure, it's a lot. In main circuit I've done 17 events. 10 of them were in the last 12 months, I have very little main-circuit experience. What’s your take on South African Motorsports? It needs a serious redo. We've lost way too many fans, the general public has no idea that racing even takes place in our country. It's sad because talent wise there is plenty of it, I can name 20 drivers who deserve a shot at a career in motorsport but as long as people don't know about it, sponsors won't be forthcoming. Your most prestigious race win? Winning in the rain from last place at Spa in 2015 What racing are you doing at the moment? I race for Lamborghini Bonaldi Motorsport in Europe. In 2015 I raced in the Italian GT Championship where I finished 2nd overall with the most wins, most poles and most fastest laps. I also did a one off event in the European Lamborghini Super Trofeo Championship and won both races with fastest lap. I also take part in the occasional Western Province kart event to stay sharp :) Choose one… Own 10 Lamborghini's or a full race in an F1 car? I'm not attached to material things, I prefer experiences... so it has to be the F1 car ;) In fact one of my co-drivers used to be a Ferrari F1 test driver (Mirko Bortolotti) and based on his stories I only wish I was young enough to have a proper go at getting to F1. Any advice for upcoming drivers? Most important advice I can a driver is that you need to hold yourself accountable no matter what. It's too easy to blame others for a crash or career progression but if you analyse it deeply enough you'll come to realise that you had the power to control the outcome. Also, if you want to become a professional then I suggest you catch the first flight to Europe. When I figured out what I needed to do I was in Italy about 4 weeks later. Lastly, this sport is about money, accept that reality early on and make it one of your primary objectives. How did racing all begin for you? When I was 14 a family friend introduced me to karting. Once I saw a real racing kart I was completely hooked and begged my dad to get me one. A year later he granted me my wish but he always told me that when I turned 18 the racing would be over and he'd stop funding my passion... he was true that as well! So from the time I left school I found ways to pay for my racing on my own but ran out of options at 24 years old and was forced to stop. After stopping, I focused on my business with my brother and saved enough money to come back 5 years later at a one-off event at Imola in a Lamborghini GT car. I almost finished on the podium which lead to me being offered a full season for 2015. I still had to pay for it though which I managed to do by selling a chunk of my company shares, crazy but worth it. Twitter @Ashish_F1 Facebook AshishRacing Instagram @ashishnarrandes Email info@ashishnarrandes.com

ISSUE 35

Apart from racing, what are you currently doing? I run a web company called Obox Themes which makes products for a popular web publishing platform. Thankfully my business was successful enough to get my foot in the door in Europe. That being said it wasn't easy, it took years of sleeping at my desk at my office to get to where I am now. Besides Racing, what sports do you enjoy? I'm useless at every other sport other there. I do wish I could do more snowboarding though, I did that once and loved it almost as much as I enjoy racing.

What should we expect from you in the future? My performances this year have landed me an offer to race for the Official Lamborghini Junior team in 2016 in the Blancpain Sprint Series... provided I find the sponsorship required. My ultimate aim is to become a professional racing driver and hopefully race in Le Mans one day. My age is a big factor though so I don't have much time to achieve my goals, which is why I've gone all in on my career. That being said, last year June I was sitting on a couch doing nothing. If you told me that by the end of the following year I'd have won at Imola, Spa, Mugello and podium'd at Monza... I'd have said you're mad. So who knows, I just keep the faith and keep pushing to achieve what I set out to do.

LOCAL ARTIST INTERVIEW | DJ DASH Apart from performing, what are your other interests? Property is my other passion, I'm actually a qualified real estate agent and next year I'm doing my auctioneering course and will start investing in property. What or whom would you say are your musical influences? I have a lot hey, J. Dilla, Q-tip, Erykah Badu, Pete Rock, Kev Brown, Jill Scott, Nina Simone...there's soooo many to mention. Who are your top 5 local artists at the moment? This is a tough one but I have to say AKA, Lexi-kon, KO, Gold Fish, Desmond & the TUTUs Who would be the international artist you would choose to collaborate / perform live with this year? I would love to work with Justin Bieber, I just like he’s growth musically. Of all the places / concerts you have toured, which can you say has been the highlight of your career? Last month I played at GROM Events and it's an under 18 gig. Wow that crowd was amazing, I mean you never think that high school kids can party like that. Artists such as Black Coffee have taken the international music scene by storm, how soon do you think you will take your act international? My goal is to be international in the next 3 years. I want to give the world something different, show them what this country has to offer. We got to ask, what would your dream car be? A 1960 Mercedes Benz 300SL. I think that car is just perfection. It's timeless.

21

Thank you for this opportunity to let our readers learn a bit more about you. Tell us when did you develop an interest in music beyond appreciating it as a listener? When I was 15 and I bought myself Nelly's, Nellyville album and I use to be a huge fan of N'SYNC that was like back in the early 2000's. I also used to beatbox, that I was another thing that drew me more into music. What would you say are your main challenges as a performer? It's mostly promoters not paying on time and having to call them for to ask for service rendered. What is it about rapping and songwriting, compared to, say, producing that makes it interesting for you? Seeing people dance to a song you helped produce and people giving you props for the work you do. That feeling you get when your song is played on radio. I know you are all for promoting the local music scene, tell us about your contribution to promoting local talent and events? I've released a hip hop mixtape back in 2010 and I featured Durban rappers and I’m also working on 2 EP's. One will be a hip hop EP and another will be trap and twerk music. Most of the artists will be from around Durban and around the country. I'm also co-owner of Bass City Events, we host events around Durban and we book Durban DJ's and performers. We just want to expand to other cities around the country. We love your campaign “Feed a Child Feed a Nation”, please tell our readers a bit more of this initiative. It was established back in 2012, I just thought to myself "Why feel sorry for these kids when you can actually do something.” I just spoke to a couple of doctors to donate food and I started small with one school and now I'm proud to say we host an annual event called "FACFAN" where we ask DJ's around Durban to DJ for free and the money we make, we use to buy food parcels. This year 100 kids from two schools around Clermont township were given food parcels. I ask more people to help where they can.

www.gasmagazine.co.za

What is next for DJ Dash? I'm currently working on a song for Feed a child Feed a Nation initiave and also a music video. People must look out for a trap song I just released produced by Wes My Meds which features Kingslay called SLAY MOVE. My new label called Distructive Music, where all my music will be released under my own label. How can our readers get hold of your tracks and any news on a album release? Facebook: Thulani Djdash Mzinyane, Twitter: TeamDjDash Is was great meeting you at last years A State of Stance SA and watching you play LIVE! Thanks for the opportunity to interview you, any shout outs or special thanks? A big shout to my brother Sibu Sishi, all my cousins my friends Xolani Dlamini, Siya Dladla. Thanks guys for an awesome magazine.

Any pearls of wisdom to our aspiring local artists?

Work hard and you must always know that nothing in life comes easy, so just keep going.

Dj Dash is the name you may know him as but off the decks his known to family and friends as Thulani Mzinyane. It all started back in 1995 when Thulani watched New Jack City and fell in love with hip-hop culture.

With having the passion for hip hop music instilled within him, Dj Dash started hitting the decks in 2009 which led to him landing his first residency at Dela Sol in 2011 and today is one of the resident Deejay’s at Origin nightclub in Durban. With everything in life, giving back to the community is something we should all take responsibility in doing, In 2012 the initiative “FEED A CHILD FEED A NATION” was setup by Dj Dash after seeing the number of children in townships suffering due to malnutrition and lack to healthy meals. The aim is to help children who came from disadvantaged homes with basic consumable items that we take for granted and to achieve this Dj Dash hosts events in and around Durban off which all proceedings go towards to purchasing food parcels. The initiative has reached over 500 children thus far but Dj Dash has a dream of expanding much more and possibly into different provinces. With a dream as huge as that, which better partner to join forces with than CMH Volvo Umhlanga who were extremely excited to work together with Dj Dash on his initiative.

Volvo have really thought of everything when it came to designing this vehicle like soft leather, grainy wood finish on the dash and door trimmings, Unique details such as crystal gearshift lever and ventilated front seats with massage functions and a four-way lumbar support.

We caught up with Lisa-Marie Pretorius who is the Customer Liaison Officer at CMH Volvo Umhlanga together with Dj Dash at their dealership and had a bit of fun with the all-new Volvo XC90.

Having sat in this beautifully designed vehicle for the first time, one feels a sense of harmony, safety and luxury. Starting from a price range of R804000.00, the vehicle comes in 4 variants namely the Designers Choice, Momentum, Inscription and R-Design, you have a choice between Petrol, Diesel or Petrol Plug-in Hybrid of which all come in a 2litre engine capacity.

The XC90 comes equipped 8-SPEED Transmission namely Geartronic, which is a responsive automatic that can instantly be switched to manual mode when you need it, helping you handle both tough conditions and towing. Safety has always Volvo’s main focus and with the all the new XC90 we see a system called “IntelliSafe” makes its way to us. The vehicle is equipped to mitigate collisions with other cars or even pedestrians on the road. One of the world’s first features includes braking at an intersection with no assistance from the driver at all. Should you turn onto the oncoming lane the vehicle will brake automatically to mitigate an accident or prevent it all together. WORDS: PRINERSH CHATHARGOON | PHOTOGRAPHY: PRINXPHOTOGRAPHY

In this industry it is very difficult to find a vehicle that encompasses a balance of style meets power. It is not often you can find a car that can finish off a quartermile and drive straight into a show room to feel right at home. My initial impression on Zubair's Golf 5 GTI was, someday all cars will be built meticulously this way. ISSUE 1

LOCKED‘NLOADED 13.7 tarlton JHB | 13.4 Margate DBN

Best quarter mile time [NO NITROS]

If I had to find a car that to feature on the cover of my inaugural issue, I could not have chosen a vehicle more special than this GTI. It has all the ideals of this publication, it's daring, its edgy, it's in your face and it's at the top of the food chain. I have met Zubair through racing circles years ago and without a doubt, he has to be the funniest person I know, always leaving me in stitches. I am ever so grateful to call him my friend and to help show the masses our passion. This car is one of the fastest hot hatches in the country and just seems to get stronger with each event. It won't be long till we see this car claiming the title of the fastest GTI in the country. It already owns the title of the hottest VDUB period. What makes a car have such a title is when the owner/builder does something unique to the build that can rival other cars in that class worldwide. This vehicle for one has 3 individual sets of 19'' BBS Wheels, one set for each occasion. A spray job that looks like it came straight out of the factory and a sound install that just finishes the car off courtesy of Keith's Panel Shop and Audio Panache. The power department was handled by Rino of Fastcar performance, a fully blown Ko4 setup in excess of 330 wheel horsepower. The addition of a nitrous kit courtesy from the boys at Old Dutch Racing sees this figure well past 400 horses. That power in a golf 5 shell is a remedy for a serious lethal weapon. It is always a great sight to see quality cars built to rival the very best this industry has to offer. Well enough of me Ranting and Raving, take a look at the attention to detail as well as the specifications and you be the judge.

Siraj Hoosan is the proud owner of this super clean Honda Civic 160i vtec. What started of as a regular b16a6 making a respectable 119kw from the factory now makes a “subtle” 464kw and 608Nm at 2bars of boost. This Ferrari eating, Porsche spanking and Lambo killing machine is nothing short of what can be achieved when science meets mechanics. Siraj wanted a fast street car, so he decided to take the car to the Honda Guru Marco Versloot. Marco used to own the fastest FWD Honda in South Africa 9.7s to be precise. It now resides at Dubsport in Tongaat. Pen was put to paper and together they came up with an impressive grocery list. No expense was spared in building the fastest street Honda in South Africa, I kid you not. Though this car was not designed for 400m racing as it has been seen exceeding speeds of over 300km/h, it can eat the quartermile in 12 seconds dead. Special thanks to Marco Versloot for building and fabricating all that he did for this car. I wanted 300-330wkw max and got over 460wkw. Johan Minaar for the tuning and Hannes Minaar for the exhaust and piping etc. Max speed seen was 306KPH on GPS,

Power curve, Gearing and tyres will allow for 200mph (322kph)

“The sheer acceleration was like nothing I felt before!”

MONSTER

People, who know me, know that I'm not a VW fan. When Harry called me to do a feature on a MK1 Golf, I held my head down and sighed, he mentioned it had a turbo so it would be cool. I still thought it would be lame. So was this any different from every other Golf in KZN? On the outside, other then the Dub Sport stickers, the car looked pretty stock, heck even the interior was relatively stock, the few odd gauges here and there. But even kombi's have those. But that's where the similarities end. Once Shawn from Dub Sport popped the bonnet, well opinions and negative connotations ended!

Glaring at me was a 2L 16v adorned with boost pipes and a turbo the big enough to blow over a house. The Dub Sport Stickers should have told me that this was no ordinary Mk Golf, it was a sleeping demon. Richard and Shawn have put in many hours and spared no expense on their workshop project car. PS The guys hinted that their next project is a 4wd mk1 golf 16v turbo. ISSUE 6

Tons of customising work was done to mat the bullseye turbo to the 2L 16v lump, from a custom exhaust and intake manifold to boost pipes and intercooler. Everything thing about the engine was built/bought with the sole purpose of extracting as much power as possible. So how much power does this Vdub push out? Well at 1.3bar it pushed out 450hp at ODI the turbo is good for 2.3bar! The best part is that the engine is able to handle that boost easy! Courteous of a forged internals. Does it go as fast as it power figures claim? Oh Hell Yes! On the day of the shoot it was set at 0.7 bar boost & running on 95 unleaded. But that did not stop the Vdub from spinning right till 3rd gear! When it did get traction, I was pushed into my seat & left in awe! The sheer acceleration was like nothing I felt before! Picture a rollercoaster ride, that thrill and tummy tickling sensation only last a second or two, in the Vdub it felt like forever, only stopping when Shawn tapped off. Man its quick. The rest of the ride to the shoot location was any easy cruise, I was amazed yet again at just how smooth the car ran, no jerking no rattling sounds, the car was smooth as a stock velocity! Richard and Shawn thought I would be converted to a Vdub fan now after a ride in that monster, heck, who wouldn't? I have to pay respect and shear admiration at one impressive build! Well done Dub Sport!

POINT OF AUTHORITY

The infamous Point Road once seen as hookers haven, today has become an upmarket residential and commercial hub. Some may say the ladies of the point have all but left, I say Nor! This black beauty turned heads as we entered the Point, all eyes on her sexy curves and elegant shape. One could tell she was definitely packing some serious heat! I signalled for the Black Beauty to stop and was ready with my camera. Every shot, every angle, I found it harder and harder to contain myself, she was teasing me. The closer I got, the more alluring she became. This had to be the hottest CAR I had shot to date. Hehehheheee I am a sucker for a S2000, who wouldn’t be. There is just something about the 'S' that entices one's senses. The shape… a typical roadster stance and poise, a long bonnet tapering to a sharp front end, the lines are met by proportionally sized air ducts. These air ducts channel cold air to the heart of the ’S’, its 177kw engine. With a light, well balanced chassis, 177kw of power drives this beast. With only a 2.0 liter engine, it's a marvel at just how the Honda engineers where able to make such an achievement. “What! 2 liters only!” That's right, the beast has a 2000cc engine, “What about a turbo you ask?”…nope no turbo or supercharger… 177kw of normally aspirated power! How is this possible?

Honda has always aspired to building N/A cars and they push the limits all the time. The 'S' is driven by VTEC, Honda's claim to fame and was inspired by the NSX, so this car has racing pedigree to is name. With the S2000 one can cruise around and not worry about the fuel gage dropping too much, but once you put your foot down and engage VTEC, the car bursts into life, screaming all the way to 9000rpm! As one feels the kick in of “VTEC Yo” you are thrown into your seat, luckily the 'S' has supportive bucket seats to keep you in check. The controls are easy to reach and well spaced out, they need to be, as the 'S” likes to go sideways from time to time. Everything in the interior seems proportionate. Nothing out of place or out of sorts, everything just right. From the S2000 emblems on the floor mats to the leather sports steering wheel it all just feels right. One word comes to mind about the 'S' …PROPORTION, that's it, that is what sets this roadster apart for the rest. The car has equal proportions from the looks to the interior styling to the 2.0L N/A engine pushing out 177kw to the rear wheels! The S2000 is truly an AWESOME car! Reshay's 2009 'S' is sadly one of the last models, 2009 saw an end to the production of the S2000. With the Honda's focus on environmentally friendly vehicles, one has to wonder, will there ever be a successor to carry out the 'S' badge…

THE RED BARON

*Note this is my Petrol Head self typing now… I am fighting my Honda self as I put down these words.*

As I move my camera and tripod around this red machine I can not help but admire the Golf 6. There is just something about it that oozes out HOT HATCH SEXINESS! A side profile that just reeks of German Heritage, yet a front view that screams out…”I am here LOOK at me!” the Golf 6 certainly looks the part. Man oh man are my fellow Honda peeps going to kill me! With that being said, what sets this G6 apart from the rest? Well it lends to the title of being the “The fastest Golf 6 in the country,” powered by FRC and piloted by Kumarin. The car ran an impressive 13.08 at Tarlton Raceway late last year. Impressive for a car which is not even a year old! Kumarin is damn proud of his car and FRC's achievement and will be looking to improve on that time and making sure the title of the “fastest G6 in country” hails from the FRC stables. Kumarin would like to add: “With the release of the Golf 6 GTi, FRC has taken the lead in the local tuning industry by initiating a project car using the Golf 6 GTi. Having already dominated the market with the Golf 5 GTi's, we were keen to see what we could do with the Golf 6 GTi and in so doing provide our customers with a locally backed and affordable solution. Our 2010 project car is just three months old and we have already surpassed everyone's expectations. We have bigger plans in the months to come, and will be posting developments of this car on the VW GTi Club Forum, www.vwgticlub.com under the Frieling Racing discussion thread, so please look out for it.”

A part of me is excited at such an achievement being made by a fellow Durbanite, BUT another part of me, my inner Jap side is sad at just how much catching up Jap cars have to do to fully compete with the likes of the new age hot hatch! The M3's title of being the bench mark is now seriously under treat. These G6s are easy to tune and are fast becoming the weapons of choice for the new ages Racers! Well done VW & FRC! Hand in hand they are a force to be reckoned with!

MILLENNIUM SUBARU

The Subaru GT is a legend in it's own right, the Subaru Cult only started in SA over the last decade. The GT like its younger siblings adopts the aggressive look with the big wing, bonnet scoop & large bumper greaner. Yes they CAN! Ashley's GT is a perfect example! The car has a Zero Sport body kit, aftermarket rear wing & headlights, 17” Ray's Engineering reps & a custom bonnet. Ashley's GT is not a mixture of random parts but each part was chosen to work & compliment each other, creating a complete car. Some may call it RICE (Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements) but don't be fooled as these parts are functional… the open face grill on the front bumper helps to supply cold air to the front mounted intercooler, while the air ducts up front, under the headlights channels cool air to the engine. The Seibon rear wing helps keep the car stable at high speeds. 2 liter turbo, boxster type engine, All Wheel Drive (AWD), aggressive looks with World Rally Championship (WRC) Heritage. All these ingredients when mixed produces a Scooby… no not a Scooby snack but a Subaru Impreza! Beauty comes in many shapes & forms, this Millennium GT shows off the Beauty of “form follows function...

Speaking of speed…this GT is fast REALLY FAST!!!! One of the quicker Subaru's in KZN. The engine bay has seen some good work, from upgraded turbo to bigger injectors, to name a few of its modifications. While the AWD system helps the Scooby put the power down, Ashley has upgraded his suspension with Type RA coil-overs. The coil-overs & upgraded brakes make this Scooby a real track contender. The first time I saw this car in action was at the SOCSA (Subaru Owners Club SA) Autocross day at Eston. Ashley handled the car beautifully through the course, taking top position on the day! Ashley's personal best time on track with his Millennium Subaru GT - Phakisa Raceway: 02:03

THE GERMAN HAMMER

The E36 has been revered as a legend, it was South Africa’s first real taste of BMW’s M division. It was the car that many boy racers at the time regarded as the benchmark. It set the tone for the E46 M and E92 to their now glory. As time moved on the E36 M fell to the shadows off its younger siblings, out matched in power and road handling, the E36 was being left behind, reaching. To a few, the car still owns its own right, they are not phased by the much more powerful, newer M3’s, to them their E36’s are their pride and joy! Richard from Dub Sport is one of these owners. In his possession, a two door 3L German spec M3. I have to say off the bat this is one of the neatest M3’s I have come across. Everything in the car is stock, apart from the engine, that is a different story all together.

To keep up with its younger siblings, Richard installed a T4 turbo. A nice power booster. He worked on the car with whatever spare time he had. Being his pride and joy, the M has received the same custom detailing as with any other Dub Sport car. The car is more of a personal cruiser than a drag machine. The added power is done for his personal enjoyment! Another impressive build, with an engine bay clean enough to eat off. I did mention the car looks relatively stock right, it's a sleeper of note and a reflection of one man's pride and passion. Well done Richard!

Rotax 998cc V-Twin Engine, Stability control system, ABS, Dynamic power steering, Brand New!

For the second year in a row, Dyno Tuning Services once again opened their doors for a massive meet accompanied by an anticipated Honda Dyno Day at their shop in Industrial Park, Phoenix. The event was sponsored by Vilem’s Truck and Plant Hire and organised by The Honda Club. If you are a JDM or just a Honda Fan you could not have missed this event. A positive atmosphere backed by truly awesome weather made for a memorable gathering for all attendees. Gates opened at 2PM, however the typical Durban crowds started pulling in at the late hours of the night. “These Honda Boys do their own thing!”, commented one of the hosts.

The sounds of screaming engines on the dyno went on long past midnight with spectators passing the 300 mark. The mobile entertainment ensured that the crowds were entertained throughout the day and night.

After an amazing turnout there were quite a few winners. The most powerful car on the day was Rajiv's Honda Civic 2.2-Litre Turbo Charged putting out a whopping 276.5kW. Grabbing the second spot and most people’s attention was a nifty Ford Escort with a S2000 N/A Engine pushing 222kW which was impressively built by the owner, Pat. Third position was Shaun with a Honda Civic 2.2-Litre N/A which developed 200.1kW of power.

With 4 classes and lots of prizes up for grabs, Christy and the boys strapped and ran well over 50 cars for the day. Although it was a Honda Dyno Day, it was good to see other brands come out to show their support, after-all that is what the car scene should be about. Some pretty impressive figures were pushed out for a lot of stock cars.

SUPERBIKE

#3

WRITER - SANJIV SINGH

We would love to know about you and your bike so please send your photos and stories to sanjiv@ontrackventures.co.za

Sanjiv is our local GAS Superbike contributor. He has been riding and racing bikes since he was ten years old and is a mechanical engineer by training. He is currently racing a Kawasaki ZX10R in the Masters Cup and riding a KTM RC390 in the Inland Championship. In between races he can be found falling off his dirt-bike at the Springfield Moto-X track or pottering around town on a dog-slow 1700cc V-twin.

Dear Santa… It’s the Christmas Edition of GAS Superbike and your letter to Santa should have the word,“Fireblade” in it. Read on and you will see why.

Japanese army knife In the real world most of us only get to own a single bike. We have to choose from a swathe of options and spend our hard earned money on a carefully selected model that will meet our sporting, financial and practical needs. The process of test riding, researching and comparing different motorcycles can be a joy, but is often a game of trade-offs and compromise. Until you meet the Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade.

It is the bike that does everything. Need to get from A to B? The Honda is comfortable to sit on, sports light controls, offers easy ergonomics and a boasts a tractable but strong engine that delivers smoothly from low rpm. And trust me, you will never be late for work. But, just in case you don’t believe me, have a careful look at the dash-cam photo taken during a short squirt up the M19 which, in any case, was too busy to fully stretch the Honda’s legs. This is the Chuck Norris of commuters. To ride the Honda CBR1000RR is to experience mechanical euphoria. Since Honda’s Tadao Baba re-defined the Superbike with his amazing design ethos of the first CBR900RR Fireblade back in 1992 the bike has slowly evolved, never deviating from its essence, and has become a motorcycle so refined that it neither sprouts nor requires any modern electronic rider aids. It is pure. The feeling of connectedness to the tarmac, the engine and even the air you move through is uninterrupted by flashing lights and other gizmos. You can snick through the ‘box without a clutch but it requires the old-school technique of releasing the drive on the cogs for a split second as you do so. The heel-toe of motorcycling. It always was, and still remains, the riders’ bike. And boy, does this thing love corners! I managed to attack a local twisty and as you can see this bike can go to really fun lean angles even on stock rubber. It will leave you satisfied.

The Fireblade also looks and sounds absolutely amazing. The test bike had an Arrow slip-on which unleashed the Honda’s hair-raising 13,500 rpm concerto.

Is there a sweeter sound than a straight firing in-line four at the limiter in all of motoring? The styling on the black and white ‘Blade is elegant and sharp. It reflects the iterative chipping away towards perfection that has happened under the skin. This motorcycle is a completely finished and masterfully orchestrated piece. It is a beautiful work of art. Fantasising about exotic collectors pieces with ridiculous performance figures, Nkandla like price tags, non-existent dealer support, paper performance tests and heaps of meaningless but flattering e-jargon is puerile. When it is time for real bikers to pay real cash for a new bike that will be ridden in the real world and he or she wants to reap the rewards that only riding a pure Superbike delivers, then there is no other choice. A Fireblade please, Santa… and I’ll try to be a good boy, next year, maybe. ISSUE 35

LOCAL FOOD REVIEW | BOILER ROOM CAFE Owned by the team behind the 9th Avenue Bistro, Gina and Graham Neilson have created one of the most unique spaces in DBN. The Boiler Room Cafe is the most simple, quirky and fastest canteen in Durban… Yes I said canteen! The Boiler Room Cafe is the residential cafe for the offices at the Lion Match Factory. We decided to pay a visit to this surprising find for this edition of Gas Magazine’s foodie feature.

Graham is the refreshing canteens master chef to this most unusual yet playful menu which caters to the cravings that you are too ashamed to admit to. From bacon, banana and peanut butter toasties to The Boris Becker milkshake, a mashup of tennis biscuits and German ginger cake. Not forgetting the Wickedly tatsy Donuts!

The open plan eatery is perfect for a quick nibble and the relaxing atmosphere, friendly and capable staff really go that extra mile to brighten up your lunch break. We were quite starved and a nibble wouldn’t do… We all opted for the gourmet burgers…. with a twist of course! Extra bacon, extra cheese, extra sausage, extra, extra ok well you get the idea! So if you’ve got an achin’ for some bacon… be sure to pop into the Boiler Room on your next lunch hour. Harry decided to add abit of everything to his burger...

SIMONE STEYN FEATURED PETROLHEAD Thank you for this opportunity to let our readers get to know you and congratulations on your success at this years Dezzi Drags! The fastest lady of the event, with 9,587s in your impressive R35 Alpha 9. For those who don’t know, tell us a little about yourself? As you can perhaps tell, I love pink. I love fast cars and enjoy racing. I am very soft hearted when it comes to animals. I enjoy watching Disney animation movies (yes, even at my age). I love to travel to new places and revisit some destinations. I hate the winter and cold weather. I believe in being polite and kind. What’s your latest racing accomplishment thus far? My latest accomplishment is running a 305km over the 1km at ODI on the 9th of August 2015 hosted by Race SA. What is the highlight of your racing career? The highlight of my racing career would have to be holding the title at Nitro Raceway for the fastest car on the Top 20 that they were hosting, for the longest duration. At what age did you start racing and where does your passion for the sport come from? I started racing last year July. It happened just by chance but I haven’t looked back since. It was at the Golf GTI day at Tarlton and we had just gotten our GTR back with the Alpha 6 kit. I will never forget this day because I felt so embarrassed. Considering this was my first race I was not used to the christmas tree. My hands were shaking and I was incredibly nervous but I pulled up to the line and messed it up 3 times before I eventually pulled off. From that day on, I was hooked. I thoroughly enjoy it and have so much fun on the track. My dad used to do rally car racing, and I have always been a lover of speed. I guess you could say it’s in my blood. What are your main challenges as a female driver and going toe-to-toe with the guys? It’s not so much about being female but perhaps being new to the sport. The competitive spirit is very high in this sport because there can only be one number one. The one thing I have learnt is to only compete with yourself. To better your own time when you go onto the track and run your own new personal best. What are your views on the legal vs. illegal drag racing scene in SA? This is a difficult one, because at some stage in our lives, every one of us has “diced” the car next to us from robot to robot. I definitely think that the illegal drags in the city centers are extremely dangerous for spectator and driver because things can go very wrong, very quickly.

“ In your spare time what would we find Simone doing? I have many hobbies, which consist of; boating, sailing, drag racing and photography. I will be doing either one or more of these things on my weekends. What is left on your list of motoring goals? I would really like to run 311km over the 1km next. It doesn’t seem like much, but anyone that races will agree that 6km/h more on a top end is very difficult to achieve. What has been your favorite car to drive on and of the track? I have only ever driven a GTR on the track and I feel very comfortable in it. I have owned many cars and liked each and every one of them. My everyday drive at the moment is a 2015 Polo GTI which I am enjoying as it is quite nippy in town… AND MUCH MORE FUEL EFFICIENT! ISSUE 35

What advice do you have for aspiring drivers? Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. Do it for yourself and you make that decision based on your tries.

Who or what has been your inspiration & how has this guided you throughout your career? I would have to say my husband, Graeme Steyn, is my inspiration. He has definitely pushed me to achieve everything that I have in such a short time. He motivates me when I doubt myself and gives me advice when I most need it. He definitely has tons of confidence in me even when I don’t even have confidence in myself. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t have been able to do it.

The Autostyle Motorshow, the one show that gets the east coast in a motoring frenzy, graced our shores on October, 11th. Partnering with the Sibaya Entertainment Kingdom, Autostyle Motorsport aimed to give Durban the biggest motorshow to date, and boy did they over deliver on their aspiration. It was reported by Sibaya’s marketing team that more than a whopping 10 000 people and just over 500 competitors were present, breaking all previous event records. Hundreds of car enthusiasts waited in what seemed to be a never-ending line just to enter the vicinity. Many waited for up to 2-hours just to get in, with traffic building up all the way to the N2. However, the true petrol heads stayed motivated as ever to get in and be a part of the biggest show in KZN.

As always, the entrants were welcomed by the popular Automotive Photo Booth where their rides were photographed and uploaded onto the Autostyle website and shared worldwide. The show delivered as always, present were the crowd’s favourites, with a lot of new additions. From bagged suspensions to insane stance, wicked turbo installs, tyre-less rides to crazy sound installs, the show was on another magnitude of awesomeness.

With cars and photographers attending from all parts of South Africa, it was certainly one of those shows you could not afford to miss. Some of the highlights for the day was the ever most popular Show and Shine displays which yanked in the majority of the crowd, the IASCA Sound-Off with sound enthusiasts going through extremes to push that maximum pressure levels, the Mobile Dyno testing, and dozens of exhibitors such as; Air Spring Supply Company, Team A-Line, Kicker, Autotrader, Rockford Fosgate and many more.

It was rather challenging to walk around attempting to take some photos of the cars with the large amount of people walking around, however I did manage to get few epic shots. It was great to see many car clubs on display.

The Opel OPC Club clearly dominated their line of display while the Durban X Owners, Ford Owners Club, The BMW Club and the AMG Club of SA made their presence impossible to miss. ISSUE 35

Air Rides have evidently increased tremendously, last year one could count the cars with air suspensions yet this year it is the new craze in the stance scene in Durban. A lot of these cars were shown off for the very first time and I am sure they planned to surprise the crowds with their new additions to the scene. It is good to see that the Air Society is growing in Durban.

Something that Vic Pardal mentioned which I totally agree with: “The car scenes in Gauteng is huge, but what makes Durban and Cape Town different is that majority of the cars are built by the owners' own two hands, hard work, sweat and dedication”. Something we should absolutely be proud off.

For me, I think the newly bagged M3 E93 was my pick of the day for best air, I mean what more could you need? A drop top, red-ox seats, air suspension, and a demon under the bonnet waiting to be unleashed. Another car which had the crowds drooling was the 2-door VW Golf 2 import with a R32 engine, absolute pure car porn. The Dyno also got some good action with cars pushing quite competitive figures when compared to the high end performance vehicles.

When it came to judging, it is always a moment that is questioned every year with owners being disappointed and crowds wondering if the right cars received trophies. I guess that is the case with any Show and Shine. It is impossible to give every car a trophy, however I do think that the cars should have been judged by categories and I think that is what Autostyle plan on doing next year. I doubt that will discourage the crowd from attending future shows as everyone attends for the passion of motoring and to show-off their cars. As the countdown begins to next year’s show, who knows what Autostyle Motorsport will have in store for motoring crazy enthusiasts.

DRAG

WARS 2015 It was that time of year again, Dragwars 2015! Bringing together some of the best ear throbbing, heart racing machines to the infamous Tarlton International Raceway. I have to say something though, Jozi knows how to bring it! I mean I have never seen so many Skylines in one place since our Gas Motorshow. And they were owning it! I called it Sukairain tengoku (Skyline Heaven in Japanese).

The crowd was out in their numbers and together with the race cars lining up behind the start line it felt like home. Brought me back to my days at back stretch in Durban. That smell of rubber and walking down where all the race cars were parked it was just all too much.

The GP plates owned the place but guess who rocked up turbo’s blazing. Our very own Durban boys, I was proud to see our guys from Durban up for the event, showing the GP guys what we got. The sun didn’t help make it easy for us though. The day seemed like it would melt rubber on it’s own with the sun giving us that Indian navy tan we all hate.

The cars were feeling it too with some of the guys sticking ice packs on their engines to keep it cool. Ofcourse the heat wouldn’t stop us from racing. I think I saw almost every tuning company out there from the CPI, Revo and FR&R members to the guys from down the road who plug stuff in their ECU to see what happens. It was fun those guys from down the road showed some real talent. And then there was one of my highlights. A top fuel dragster right before my eyes. Speed and Sound decided to roll up in their ear melting godzilla of a drag car. When they brought it on track for some reason I “lost” my hotdog and went straight for my camera. Listening to this thing burn rubber on the start line was like listening to an orchestra of pistons playing some kind of karma sutra/ACDC style music. I was in love. I felt like a kid who found his mother after getting lost in the mall.

So anyway she launched off the start line, tyres twisting, nose in the air, throttles fully opened and before I knew it. She was over the line posting something like 7 seconds. Which tore me apart. The races were awesome though, I saw everything from your crazy worked APR TT RS which sounded so sweet to your Golf R’s going up against Skylines and don’t laugh, these guys were not racing for fun those VAG cars had some serious HP down under which is what made the races worth watching.

WORDS AND PICS BY JAVON FRANCIS PHOTOGRAPHY

The event was brilliant it brought me back to my days “watching” the guys dice in Durban. Everything from Skylines, Mazda’s and American Muscle to A LOT of VAG cars obviously because it was a VAG event (for those of you who did not know). And believe me the organisers did a brilliant job of putting this event together.

The Vag cars that came out to race were top quality race cars. It was not the type of event that had you bored because it was another Golf with a cone filter rolling up to the line. These were VAG cars who had their engines fully mapped and ready to make some serious times on the strip.

So I thank the sponsors and I want to send a big shout out and thank you to VAG Motorsport/APR South Africa/TMSS/McCarthy VW Arcadia/Designlab/Carbon Doctor and Plastidip Centurion you guys made this event one of the best drag events I have ever been to and you will most definitely see me soon. So I shall see you next year at Dragwars 2016!

facebook.com/clarissaklittleladyfoundation | Proceeds went towards the Clarissa K Little Lady Foundation The Clarissa K Little Lady Foundation cares for and mentors more than 1000 kids.

In the heart of Mt Edgecome, along with KZN-DUBS-CLUB chairman Ranesh Mahabeer, approximately 200 VW vehicles invaded “The Ultimate Car Show”. The DubDrive 2015 undoubtedly stole the show. The atmosphere was great. Skinny Hippo challenged the crowd to try to gobble up their “Monster Burger”. Many tried but none prevailed. There were many cars, each unique in its own way. From shiny chrome rims to the most insane sound setups. Best appeal went to Julian Naidoo’s VW Polo GT, running on air suspension, OZ Chrome rims, rear camber wheels, fitted with Polo GTI side skirts and exhaust with diffuser. His car really took the spotlight, leaving the crowd in a state of awe after dropping his car to the ground. However best Air Stance went to Dredin, VW Polo as well with much more detail inside out. It was definitely a great day with fun for the entire family, Big ups to Ritesh Sathnarain for putting together such a great event as well as Ranesh Mahabeer (KZN-DUBS-Club Chairman) for the DubDrive 2015.
