2016 ‌ Is it too late? You may be wondering why the above title? Either panic has set in or people are starting to be more proactive when advertising their business. The truth is we have seen more business regarding corporate Identity over the January period then we have over the first quarter in 2015. Everyone is a buzz on social media platforms, re-branding, getting involved in their website interphase but there still lies a question, is it too late?

I feel if you have given your business enough attention, if you have networked and got involved with events, this year you will reap the just rewards. You have nothing to worry about. This tragic economy could actually be a blessing in disguise. Your competition will try to duplicate your marketing solutions that you have implemented decades in advance. 2016 is the year that will separate the men from the boys, the question still arises is it too late?

Surely it cannot be too late? This may offend a few out there but it may very well be true. If you had to read my rants from the very first issue of Gas Magazine, you would have seen how passionate I have been with regards to businesses and marketing budgets. Our concern has always been are businesses utilizing marketing and advertising budgets effectively? Are they just being lazy and following trends?

Till next time follow us on social media and get updated with upcoming events. We have our hands full with Drag, Drift, Track, Spin, Stance, Dyno, Sound-Off and Motocross events this year and we want you all to be a part of it

Can they justify returns on their investments? The answer; we will find out this year.

Every industry is competitive including our very own. I would like to think that we have not only managed to keep our doors open and all of our staff but elevate and be innovative. We realized quickly that in order to compete on this level we would have to bring something new to the table. We started with the FREE publication, took it online with the website and the App and held largest motoring events in South Africa. We are currently in talks with one of the largest media companies in the world to assist us with a concept that we want to bring to market over the next few months. The point is business never stops, you have to network, invest time and money and hope in the end you have done enough.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS WITH ASHISH

SPONSOR TALK / Front Wheel Drive Racing

As the 2015 race season approaches a close, time to start thinking about 2016. That begins by lining up sponsors now. For the most part, I think many racers aren't very good at finding sponsors. The vast majority of racers think putting a sticker on their race car will bring them sponsorship money. It likely won't. Rather then me preach, I'm going to share a letter we were written. Read it and think about what your sponsorship program is like. As a business owner, I see racers come in and out of my business, every now and then someone would say "hey, wouldn't you like to get your name on my car", but it seemed like they all wanted was a hand out. Two winters ago, an older racer, Bob, whom I see in my place occasionally asked if I might be interested in joining his racing team. So I asked him what that meant. He proceeded to explain how he would help my business, what he could do for me. He talked about how many times he'd visit my business. How often he'd bring the car and do promotional appearances. He spoke about how many folks he interacts with on a regular basis and what his influence on their habits was.

"hey, wouldn't you like to get your name on my car" For me, advertising is an investment, the money I am going to spend on a sponsorship is going come from my advertising budget. It needs to perform as well as what I was spending it on or its stupid for me to spend it. So we decided to give it a try. $1000 for a rear quarter panel. Over the course of the next 4 months, I saw Bob nearly every week. This was before the race season even started. He'd eat lunch, sometimes by himself, sometimes with others. He'd update me on the progress of the car. He'd check in on FB, take a picture of his lunch, or his guys, or our waitress and tell all his friends how good it was and how his friends should check us out. He wrote a positive review on yelp for us. He tweeted us, #BestPastaInRockville In the early spring, he held a race team fund raiser at our restaurant. We made a giant pan of our awesome lasagna and he invited all his teammates, supporters, friends and family, other sponsors.. they each donated $10 a plate to the race team and bought their own beverages and deserts. I still made money, I got a bunch of new people to try my business, everyone shared their dining experience on social media. 85 people came... you do that math for Bob. Bob gave everyone there a bright neon orange t-shirt with his team name and car number on the front, a silhouette of his car and the names of all his sponsors on the back. My wife and I got one too. Once the season started, he'd post every week on FB photos of himself, his team, his fans in the crowd. They'd all be in that bright orange t-shirt. He'd encourage folks to support his sponsors, and he'd tag us in his posts. He was always positive, never any ugliness. He often shared our pages post, when we mentioned him or just a random selection of our other posts. Once a week, or every other week he'd eat lunch here, he'd bring us 4x6 photos of the car in Victory lane, or on the hook. Once a month on race day he'd set up in the parking lot with his car on the open trailer and hand out hero cards. He never asked us for a thing outside was there anything else he could do for us. We'd see people all summer long in those bright orange t-shirts come and dine with us, sometimes they'd say Bob sent us, other times they'd just come and go, but we knew why they were there.

“Pretty soon, I was asking him what else I could do to help him. I was hooked.”

About mid-season, he gave us all tickets to a race night. He joined us in the stands. He had team swag for anyone not in team swag. We weren't a sponsor, we were a part of his team. We cheered for him, we were now emotionally attached. Talking to some of the other people there, Bob treated them all the same. He supported their busineses. He cared about them. Pretty soon, I was asking him what else I could do to help him. I was hooked. I knew how hard he was working for me, I knew I was getting solid value for my buck. It wasn't long and I found myself utilizing the services of the other sponsors of the race team. I learned many of them were customers of mine. Nobody was really spending more money, they were just focusing the money they were already going to spend. It was a win-win. There were just 8 of us sponsors, but combined we put $10,000 into Bob's race team, our race team. Before the end of the year, we were all re-upped for this season. At the banquet we were thanked for our support, we each got a nice poster montage from every race night of the year.

Sponsorship seems to have finally gained credence and respectability as a marketing tool [brandsandbranding] Sponsorship, for so long regarded by many as the poor cousin of other communication mediums, seems to have finally gained credence and respectability as a marketing tool. Companies today are under increasing pressure to exhibit their corporate responsibility credentials and sponsorship can serve as a powerful force for good by reflecting a company’s ethics in a visible, meaningful and interesting way.

About once a week a random racer will stop in, ask me if I want to put my name on their car... folks I've never seen before and after I say I'll think about it, I never see again. It's clear to me why they need a sponsor. Bob finished in 8th in the points, we only won a single heat all season long, but for us it was like the Indy 500. Bob doesn't need to win on the track for us to support him, because he wins in everything else he does. I can't imagine not being a part of this team.

MintIMPERIAL WORDS & PHOTOGRAPHY BY AKEEL HASSAN

The carscene is a difficult place to be in… One day you are hot and the next day you are one among a thousand who look exactly the same as you. A Toyota Tazz has long been the economical run-about of anyone from students to grandparents. To make people go, “ooooh” or “aaaah” when they see your car is really difficult when these cars are seen as nothing but a means to get yourself from point A to point B.

I first saw this car at a car show and didn’t realise it was the same dark blue car that sported the blue and gold combination, previously. I walked around the car and thought to myself: “clever idea to dip it” it was only later when I was told that Chad had gone through the effort of spraying the car the fresh colour that we see here. That really shows commitment as it is not so easy to change it back after such a bold colour change. As is the case with a dipped car. The outcome is simply breath taking (much like the effect that a mint imperial leaves) and the white ruff racing wheels suit the car perfectly. The colour chosen really makes this car stand out amongst the silver and grey brigade that we see currently.

ISSUE 36

20

Where did it all start? The car was initially bought by Chad’s brother who then sold it to his dad, who then sold it to his aunt. Safe to say it was a ‘family’ vehicle. Chad purchased it from his aunt and has the car for 3 years now.

21

www.gasmagazine.co.za

Having a love for Toyota’s and modifying cars, almost immediately a set of wheels and a lowering kit was bought and things just escalated from there, or should I say descended. The desire to go low took preference and Chad in order to go lower cut a few coils off the kit but it was not comfortable at all and a Maxtrac coilover kit was bought. The car has always remained fresh as Chad does a wheel change regularly, every three months, but even with the wheel changes Chad became bored easily and started conducting research on which colour would be perfect to take peoples breath away. He settled for a mint green spray job with a matte finish. The car was dropped off at AJ Sprayworx and they worked their magic to give us the colour we see today.

The matt effect of the paintwork just gives it that depth in any setting and coupled with the full white 15” Ruff wheels which are 8.5J and wrapped in Dunlop 165/50 profile tyres.

The stance of this car is just perfect. Getting the proper fitment also takes a lot of time but luckily Chad belongs to the Republic of the 92’ers and they are well known for having some of the best slammed ee90 shape Toyota’s in the Cape.

ISSUE 36

22

What’s next for this car?

A lot of people will be asking what is under the hood, but it is a standard 2e engine as it gets him to shows, carting around the family and to work and back, so this will remain unchanged. The interior is next on the list for some love. Chad is however thinking about a colour change as similar colours have now started popping up on the scene. One thing is for sure this man is determined to stay fresh.

Chad would just like to thank: My club- Republic of the 92ers for always inspiring and sharing ideas, my wife Nicole Palmer for always supporting me, my spraypainter Mr Adenaan Hercules at AJ Sprayworx, Fatima Suleman & Nicholas Behari at Alies wheels for dealing with my constant tyre changes and for keeping my ride fresh with new wheels, Eugene Benjamin at A-list Valet services for keeping my baby clean and smelling fresh and my buddy Dustin Africa for always assisting when it comes to working on my ride.

After waking up early on Saturday morning to a cold and wet Cape Town, I made my way to Dynotech for the much anticipated and talked about Dynowars.

Words & Pics By Upon arrival there were not many cars lined up for power runs which I’m assuming was due to the bad weather, but after it cleared more and more people turned up and Dynowars was booming. There were some crazy cars that turned up at the event, like Shane Martin’s Evo which put out an insane 473KW which drew a lot of attention. Patrick Hartnic also turned up is his rare Focus RS and put down a respectable 308KW which is amazing for a stock turbo RS! But by far the craziest and most powerful car on the day was Suspect’s Chev Lumina Twin-Turbo bakkie, putting down a whopping 717KW on low boost and blowing a rear tyre on the dyno while doing so! Definitely the biggest crowd pleaser of the day. It was a fantastic day and fun was definitely had by all, with trophies and prizes given out to the most powerful (even the least powerful) of the day. A big thanks goes out to all our sponsors on the day, as well as a big thanks to Dynotech. See you next year!

Dyno Wars 2015! That crazy time when you realize what kind of power people are really making! I always respected Dyno Wars it always knew how to put those loud mouth small power owners in their place. Luckily we didn’t have any of those at PCTSA in Johannesburg, We did however have some huge power figures coming out of the Performance Chip Tuning Team with some crazy ear busting VW’s and next to that CPI pulling out their monster M5 which happened to make an effortless 504kw and lets not get into how awesome she sounded, because my description of that M5 engine note would sound like I’m describing a porno! But aside from porn stars and ear bleeding monsters, we had a really crazy Supra strutting a Veil Side Body kit and concave Advan Rims pull up, unfortuantely we couldn’t see her power figures because she didn’t go on the dyno but I bet she would of let that 2J show us who’s boss! On the day there were a lot of VAG cars ... but one caught my eye, it was a CPI tuned S3 that looked like she had her insides gutted and replaced with The Car God’s version of an engine.

And all those mods proved what she was worth, by posting a power figure in the high 200kw region and she knew how to sing that engine note too! Overall it was an amazing day with some really powerful GP engines showing us what they got and I have to say the guys from PCTSA did an amazing job hosting Dyno Wars, they made sure everycar was Dyno Ready! Even my own car which they helped me with. And they really knew what they were doing, they are some of the most professional tuners you will find , so you can bet who is going to building my ST! Hopefully we will see it next year on the rollers posting power figures close to some of the guys I saw! I just hope I don’t get cleaned out too badly! ISSUE 36

Words & Pics By So I went to my first Dyno day which was held at Autograph Racing. I wasn’t too sure what to expect but when I pitched up there at 6pm. I was quite surprised to see the turn out and the wide range of modified cars all ready to do their run. Now these things usually happening during the day ... but as soon as the sun set and the temp went down, I could really feel the enthusiasm of everyone there.

I could tell that things were going to get quite exciting. They started out with some really strong cars but as the night progressed, it didn’t matter what was on the dyno. All that mattered was that they pushed their cars as hard as they could.

Being a part of the Gas Magazine team has afforded me the opportunity to capture the power of the National Dyno Wars event, which I covered at Powertek Racing Development in Pietermaritzburg KZN. After a quiet start, the momentum swung into top gear around 3pm. Many cars entered this event with varying results from all vehicles that participated. The top three cars of the day were very impressive, starting off with the infamous ‘NE 307’ VW Golf 1, owned by Ebrahim Buckus achieving 315kw, the second highest was the Nissan Skyline R33 GTR achieving 357kw, and the highest horsepower for the day, was Shawn Moodley’s BMW which reached a high of 365 kw. Trophies were awarded for the following categories, 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each class, as well as the highest and lowest horsepower of the day. A friend of mine, Stephen joined in the fun hoping to take home the lowest horsepower trophy and lost by one kilowatt which made us laugh because his wasn’t actually the slowest car there. The event was enjoyed by all, and having a motorsport event in PMB delighted the local motorsport enthusiasts.

Words & Pics By Dyl Welton I once again got to meet new people along the way, including the owner of Powertek himself, Dhemandra Bhika. As I am from PMB, I had a lot of friends that attended the event, which made the event more enjoyable, especially after convincing them to put their cars on the dyno, which wasn’t hard at all. As I like to say, ‘the

best

part about cars are the people you meet along the way.’ 29

December 12th marked the phenomenal gathering of the country's eager performance enthusiasts. Gas Magazine and 10 of the best performance centres in South Africa teamed up with the ECR and Game's Toy Story initiative to make the National Dyno Day one for the record books. My camera and tripod led me to the untapped city of Stanger with host Livendra Govender launching the Vengo Performance Centre. Creating a buzz within the Stanger community, hopefuls brought out their gems to test just who is the most powerful car in the town.

Words & Pics By Jitesh Mohun

Although the weather was a buzz kill, it did not alter the minds of petrol heads to stay under their blankets. Some of the show stoppers that graced us with their presence were a Nissan GTR R35, Nissan Skyline R33, Audi TTRS, BMW M3, many VWs, and Toyota’s. With all the hype created on the day countrywide, the hashtag #DynoWars was trending on all social media platforms proving that it if you missed it, you missed out.

On the 12th of December Powerhouse Auto and Towing hosted Kokstad's first Dyno Event for Gas Magazine accompanied by a Sound Off by Vicious Cars and a Show and Shine. Support came in from Petrol Heads as far as Port Shepstone and Umtata. There was also a big turn out from the local community with supporters of all ages. The Dyno event quickly sparked a competitive spirit and bets started doing their rounds. The owners of Powerhouse brought in a third party to run the Dyno event to ensure unbiased results.

Despite the changes in weather the participants were not discouraged and a great family day was had by all. Powerhouse Auto would like to thank Gas Magazine for being included in this great initiative of Dyno Wars.

Hello from Johannesburg! The land of big power, furiously loud motor vehicles and man-buns apparently!

Max power went to a ridiculously loud Corsa OPC that suspiciously looked very stock! Watch out for this beast.

Reporting from CPi in Edenvale I found myself arriving on Saturday to the sight of a street jammed full of cars waiting to be statically spun.

The figures coming of the dyno were very pleasing to the owners, with a stock Mini Cooper S getting a wheel-kilowatt reading of 180-odd. Pretty crazy for the little bimmer!

From highly strung Japanese tech to All American (or Australian depending on how you look at it) metal, every type of motor fanatic converged upon CPi. There were some seriously powerful cars attacking the dyno.

Leaving with lungs full of carbon drenched oxygen and a tummy full of delicious lamb chops provided by the gracious hosts I was content, knowing that the war on CPi's rollers were complete.

It was all hype and excitement since the announcement of Dyno Wars, held on 12 December 2015. This was great opportunity to interact with people of like minds, see some high horsepower rides and enjoy the taste of high octane and methanol! I expected to see a few overheating problems on the rollers due to the humidity on the day but to our surprise, luckily, we saw nothing of the sort. Otherwise a great success and an amazing turn out at Autotrix Motorsport. With a slow start in the early hours of the day and later the beasts coming out to a full moon.

Over the past few months, there seems to have been a big swing in the ‘not so super car’ community towards more track inspired cars. I was happy to see high quality Hondas, VW Golfs and Toyota Corollas still being built as the community grows around the newer makes and models. Another great initiative by the Gas Magazine team, ending the year with a banger, keeping the less fortunate in mind and partnering up with East Coast Radios Toy Story 2105! One of the coolest things about the past few months is seeing that the people are really taking to the culture and getting the kids more involved. Shoutout to the guys of Autotrix Motorsport for supporting the cause and making this event possible.

With all of us just recovering from the ALLSTARSWEEKEND held at Dezzi Raceway a few weeks ago, The team at GAS Magazine pulled out yet another ace out of their sleeve. With suspense in the air as social media lit up of a last event for the year taking place we all knew it was going to be something huge! Finally it was announced, the biggest DynoWars ever to be held in South Africa which included 10 Dyno’s countrywide on the 12th of December 2015. Words & Pics By Prinersh Chathargoon KZN was home to five Dyno venues which included; AutoTriX MotorSport (DBN), Rally Cross Motors (DBN), PowerTech Racing (PMB), Vengo Performace Centre (Stanger) and Stealth (Newcastle). The remainder 5 venues were split between CPI Performance (JHB), PCTSA (JHB), Powerhouse Auto (KokStad), Autograph Racing (Port Elizabeth) and DynoTech (Cape Town). I was based at the Rally Cross Motors dyno and arrived there at 3pm of which the guys were already taking to the Dyno. Petrol fumes,, Nitrous Oxide, Methanol and not forgetting those TDIs with their bursts of black clouds was all part of this fun filled afternoon. Rally Cross Motors saw a host of Polo TDIs take to their Dyno, Opel Astra OPC, Honda S2000, and my favorite which I haven’t seen in a while Nissan Sentra STi. Unfortunately I had to leave around 7pm, A little earlier than expected and missed a couple beasts that came out to play when it got dark and apparently the beast only do come out when the sun goes down never the less my partner in crime Nabeel Ismail from MNI Photography was there to capture some of the guys that came in after 7pm. This included Mercedes Benz C63s, Nissan Skyline’s, BMW M3s and couple more highly modified beasts. An event of this magnitude takes a lot of preparation and intense planning not forgetting capital. This event would have not been possible if it wasn’t for all the sponsors that were a part of this, the entrants, the team at GAS Magazine and not forgetting the tuning houses that put up their Dyno facilities for the event. On behalf of GAS Magazine a huge thank you to all that made this event possible and not forgetting a huge thank you to Gas Magazine from myself for the opportunity to cover this event once again. This is PrinX Signing Out!

Going to a Dyno day is always an interesting experience. But when you go to one run by a company known as "Gas Magazine," you know that it's going to be more unusual than expected. DYNO WARS, just the name itself is powerful enough to captivate someone’s mind. Not just one Dyno, 10 Dyno’s, Nationwide. Once again Prethiven (AKA Harry) and the rest of team Gas Magazine successfully managed to put together a National Dyno, 10 Dyno’s around South Africa. Trophies ranging from the highest horsepower to the lowest. Yes, you’ve read right. Gas Magazine catered for everyone. In the blistering sun of Durban, I covered the dyno at Rally Cross Motors. Cars ranging from daily driven cars to proper built race cars. My all-time favourite, the Nissan GTR R35 made an insane power of 529kw & 996nm. With that been said many people are probably unaware as to what exactly is a Dyno? A dyno is a machine which measures torque and horsepower throughout the RPM range of a vehicle. After a day full of exhaust fumes, the smell of methanol and not forgetting the passionate spectators, we can proudly say that Durban’s car culture is spreading like wild fire. It’s not about whose car is faster and whose is slower; it’s all about the passion which we all have for cars. The Dyno Wars event really ended 2015 with a bang as it was the last event of the year hosted by Gas Magazine. Words & Pics By Nabeel Ismail ISSUE 36

With all of that been said, one can just wonder as to what 2016 has in store for us.

TIFFANY FISHER FEATURED PETROLHEAD Thank you for this opportunity to let our readers learn a bit more about you. For those who don’t know, please tell us more about you and when did you develop an interest in bikes? My Name is Tiffany Fisher, I am 27 years old. I grew up in a small town called Masvingo in Zimbabwe. I first developed an interest in bikes when my brother joined the biker club Survivors in 2011. He would take me for Sunday rides but decided to learn how to ride a bike myself as I am not a good passenger! I learnt on my brothers XT350, not a good learning bike as the compression from the kickstart is not so great and soon I was riding with the bikers on my Kawasaki 250! I instantly fell in love with bikes and soon in late 2013 joined the 250 Megelli Nationals here in Zim. With only being in the sport in such a short while how did you feel when the South African Monroe Racing Team selected you to join their team and how has this partnership helped you grow in the sport as a female racer? When the Monroe Racing Team selected me to join their team I was over the moon! Thanks to the Monroe Racing Team I attended track days in SA on a few different tracks, my favorites being Kyalami and Zwartkops. On these track days there was always an experienced rider to show me the lines and different techniques of riding as well as the setup of the bike. Confidence plays a huge role in competitions and achieving the highest rankings, how do you keep yourself motivated in this demanding and high risk sport? Confidence does play a huge part in racing, and I get my confidence from all the support of my family and friends as well as being a very competitive person and I wont stop until I reach my goal on track times. I will say on the start line for circuit races I have almost no confidence and I am known to start terribly yet in the drag races I am first off the line! This year is all about my starts for circuit races. Apart from racing, what are your other interests? My other hobbies are fishing, reading, gym and more gym! I would like to try some of the crazier things like skydiving soon! Who are your top local racers at the moment? Our top local racers at the moment are Philip Archenoul and Shawn Whyte who is one of the SA champions! Who would be the one racer you would like to go head to head with? I would like to push my goals high this year an try an go head to head with Shaun Whyte, he is definitely one rider I will always look up to here in Zim and if I could keep his pace on the track then I have definitely achieved my dreams. What can you say has been the highlight of your career thus far? The highlight of my career so far would be the first race I had won on the 250 in 2014 and winning the championship last year on the 250 races, definitely a stepping-stone on my career. Any plans on taking your career international? At the moment there are no plans on taking my career international, it would be a dream come true though! Aside from bikes, we got to ask, what would your dream car be? My dream car would have to be a Subaru WRX STI, I have wanted one since forever, I love the look, the feel of the drive and the sound, nothing can compare What has been your favourite bike ride thus far and in your opinion what is the best buy for 2016. My favorite bike ride so far is the Honda CBR600R. It is a forgiving and easier bike to ride than the rest and last year being the first time racing in the 600 class the Honda suits me best. This year will also be Honda for me as I still have so much to learn about racing, one day I hope to race a Kawasaki ZX6 as I’m a big fan of Kawa since my first bike the 250R. Where in the world would be your dream track/road to ride on? I haven’t actually thought of my dream track/road to ride, I think the Isle of Man would be a spectacular ride! What is next for Tiffany Fisher? I hope to improve on the 600 class and attend more races in SA. The experience is just amazing. I hope to add up more championships to my career and lots of experience.

Who or what has been your inspiration & how has this guided you throughout your career? My inspiration would have to be Philip Archenoul as he mentored me last year and his guidance and passion is an absolute inspiration to push hard and hopefully soon beat him in one of the races!!! How can our readers follow your racing career online? I have a page called Tiffany Fisher no. 11 on Facebook if anyone wants to follow me. Thanks for the opportunity to interview you, any shout outs or special thanks? And a special thanks to the Monroe Racing Team! My mentor Philip Archenoul and to everyone who has supported me!!!!!! FEST 2K16

Pics by Simone Chetty & Javon Francis / Words by Javon Francis

Since the 1930’s VW has always had it’s grip on the motorsport industry. From the MK1’s to the later Mk4 VR6 legend. People were customising and showing off their creations from the time their feet could touch the pedals of dads Golf. One thing stayed consistent though is that through the ages VW owners always had a sense of comradery, a feeling that brought together the 1930’s Mk1 to the VR6 to now the 7th Generation of the VW line up, and when they would meet it always has the same feeling, that feeling you get when you drive into a lot and your brothers are standing with beers and VW keyrings hanging from their hands, their cars all perfectly lined up and stanced out. Now that is what being a VW family member is all about and for another year those generations of family built VW’s from across the country come to meet on one hallowed turf to celebrate and show off what being a VW owner is all about whether you’re riding low or stock it didn’t matter, the VW family rides together. February 5th 2016 brought another showstopping VW Campfest to the plains of Gauteng, the event that every VW owner in South Africa looks forward to. The low, the mean and plain down dirty all met at Eagle Waters Resort in Hartebeespoort in Gauteng, and if you survived the drive to Gauteng... most of the drivers then had to survive the heat because it was hot!

Not like Cape Town hot, this was Durban Extra Hot! The kind of hot that made you wonder whether you filled your radiator! But like every car event, the heat had no effect on the numbers that turned up and boy did they turn up.

I even saw some of our guys from Durban turn up, and in true Durban style with six charous in the back of a Golf which was actually on a trailer…being towed by two other charous in a bakkie…I don’t know about you but I felt proud! Talking about legendary, there was a Red Polo doing some strange things with its rear end.

I could swear it was twerking, can cars twerk? That was air ride level 5.0. I felt harassed when that booty dropped!

41

www.gasmagazine.co.za

The event brought some crazy locals too which were not only VW’s but more along the lines of the VAG scene with some crazy bagged Audi’s especially the ART guys who helped with some bagging advice and of course showing me what their made of. Every year I notice that the bagged scene grows substantially and guys are getting so much more artsy fartsy with their creative side. The scene at VW Campfest was not just the regular bagged Dub’s you see everyday but these had a sense of craftsmanship and pride attached to their machines, you can see the hours and effort the guys put into their vehicles this year and that is exactly what makes a show worth coming for. It does not just bring a family together but brings a community of artists who’s canvas is the one thing they are more passionate about than anything and that is their cars and yes these guys at VW Campfest created art or in other words Car Porn. I would love to see a classic beetle neatly done driving past me but I go to VW Campfest to see that neatly done Beetle which has so much creativity it’s hard not to stare. Then there are the odd few beetles with monster turbo charged engines sticking out it’s butt, but that is art too.

I love VW Campfest and although I have only owned one VW, this event makes me feel at home among the crafters of the motorsport industry, I will support this event year in and year out. I can’t wait to see what next year has in store for me and maybe just maybe I will build something to put on that infamous podium. My shout out for this feature has to go to the guys from Durban, who rocked up with class leading Dub’s to the show and competed against the best. Cheers to you!

When I rocked up for the photoshoot, those were exactly the thoughts that ran through my mind. I could feel the adrenaline pumping through my veins as owner Adrian Putz started his Chevrolet V8 Camaro SS. Listening to the car idle got me thrilled and filled with desire to take the car on a joyride.

I could be pretentious, yes I could be, but when I think of a muscle car I think of either Vin Diesel in Fast and Furious, or Eleanor in Gone in 60 seconds.

To conduct a build of this magnitude, one has to be prepared mentally and financially. Creative Stylist by occupation and car enthusiast by passion, Adrian's style and sophistication is evident by the cars he drives. He took ownership of the Camaro SS in 2012. Being a 44-year old car, it was not in the best of shape which meant that there was lots to restore. With no hurry and aiming for perfection, two and a half years later, the complete restoration process was complete (which was just a few days just before our photoshoot). For a complete restoration, one is usually faced with daunting challenges. Where do you begin? For Adrian, he started with the engine. Originally a 5.7-litre V8, now stroked to a 6.2-litre V8 with an imported 383 stroker kit, power is not something it lacks. He kept the original auto transmission and the original left hand drive. With assistance from George Cummings of Waterfall, Adrian very soon got this V8 juiced up and ready to hit the roads. For that much power, it was only fitting that he upgraded the braking system. He had a complete upgraded system imported and while he was at it, he changed most of the suspension parts to ensure that there would be no issues in the future.

ISSUE 36

52

After thorough research, Adrian decided to have his complete body restored by Panelrite Panel beaters. Being an American muscle car, parts are not readily available over the counter, so many parts had to be imported. In the condition he bought it, some of the panels had body filler, and for him that was not going to do it. He had the fenders, bonnet, headlights and tail lights replaced.

Originally red, painted blue, his final choice of colour was gunmetal grey. Certainly a choice he would live to never regret. He aimed to keep the car as OEM as possible by keeping the original front spoiler and boot fin. Apart from the original shell, almost all the accessories were replaced. The right subtle bits here and there was just enough to do justice to his build.

Owner Adrian Putz with Terrence Moses of Mothers Polish SA.

53

www.gasmagazine.co.za

Once the engine and body was sorted it was time to spice up the rest of the car. After speaking to Terrence Moses from STC Agencies, they decided to throw on a set of 20-inch Vision Millani wheels wrapped with Federal 285/30/20 tyres at the front and 285/35/20 tyres at the rear. He chose to go for the retro/modern day look. Terrence advised him to have the body glazed and waxed with the best of Mothers速 products. Next on his list, was to sort out the unattractive interior and by this we mean take out everything just to have it replaced with better quality material. The seats were completely re-upholstered with red stitching to compliment the detailing inside. The mats replaced with original Camaro logos embroided on them. He had a little tweaking done to the dash and dials and a very fancy 3-step gear lever was fitted.

Words: Jitesh Mohun / Pics : Streamline

54

He left the best for last and immediately got cracking on turning it into a reality. He approached Audio Analysis in Waterfall and asked them to “throw in something that will blow me away”. Fitted with a Sony Head Unit, complete Rockford Fosgate tweeters, mids and subs. All of this driven by Rockford Fosgate T400x4 and T1500x1 amplifiers. A Rockford Fosgate 10-Farad Digital capacitor and second battery were installed to prevent a power loss. He says “He had to fit a sound system that could compete with the sound of his V8 Engine”

Pictures do not claim justice to the car, seeing is definitely appreciating. Finding the appropriate venue for a photoshoot was rather challenging, and with Adrian still getting accustomed to a left-hand drive, we eventually settled for a nearby location in Westville. Boastfully, I am delighted to be the first to feature this beautiful Chevrolet V8 Camaro SS.

SUPERBIKE

#4

WRITER - SANJIV SINGH

We would love to know about you and your bike so please send your photos and stories to sanjiv@ontrackventures.co.za

Sanjiv is our local GAS Superbike contributor. He has been riding and racing bikes since he was ten years old and is a mechanical engineer by training. For 2016 he will be racing a Kawasaki ZX10R in the Masters Cup and in between races he can be found falling off his dirt-bike at the Springfield Moto-X track or pottering around town on a dog-slow 1700cc V-twin The 2015 World Superbike Championship was won by Jonathan Rea on a Kawasaki Ninja. On the home front Kawasaki’s Ninja 300 is about to make aspiring racers’ dreams come true. The opening of Dezzi Raceway has been great news for KZN and it gets even better in 2016.

Hero Maker

An inaugural 300cc Championship will be run over 7 rounds at Dezzi Raceway. According to Tracey Milledge, the dealer principal at East Coast Motorcycles, you, dear reader, can buy a brand new, fully race-prepped and race-ready Kawasaki Ninja 300 straight off the dealership floor. Never before has motorcycle racing been this simple, safe, accessible, fair and affordable. The Kawasaki Ninja 300 is powered by a 296 cc, parallel twin, fuel injected, 4 stroke power-plant that redlines at 13,500 rpm. Even in stock form, which means that you can rev the bollocks off it for years without hassles, this miracle engine, which has no more displacement than a tea cup, will run you up to 100km/h in just over 5 seconds and get you pretty close to 200 km/h. Let that sink in for a moment.

It comes straight off the floor with a slipper clutch much to the delight of track pundits. The front wheel is kept on the ground with conventional 37mm forks and at the rear is Kawasaki’s tried and tested Uni-Trak setup with a 5 way preload adjuster. The terror lever is connected hydraulically to a two piston caliper biting a 290 mm disk upfront and at the rear, you will find 220 mm disk paired with a 2 pot hydraulic caliper. Ready to roll it weighs in at approximately 165 kgs. While getting a Ninja 1000 (like Jonny Rea’s) to turn is much like discussing buying a new bike with your other half, turning the 300 is an almost telepathic affair. Just a hint of counter-pressure on the bars and over she goes…then amazingly for a bike with cost saving components, it holds a line competently, easily soaking up bumps and leaving the steering light while communicating all the goings on through the chassis without being too harsh. Complementing the package is a very short and close ratio gearbox which is precise, light and delightfully quick. The test bike had a raspy WolfMoto slip-on ‘pipe, which is part of the East Coast Motorcycles race pack. It turn this little green gem into a proper screamer making it feel and sound like a real race-bike and not a fast, great handling washing machine, which sadly, is what a lot of modern bikes feel like. For years KZN riders have been pining for a chance to go racing and finally a local dealer, track owner and club officials have put together a formula that works for everyone. “After seeing the previous owner race the car at Tarlton Raceway back in 2007, I fell in love with it and had to have it! I had made up my mind and wanted to purchase the Corolla from him. A deal was made and the car was delivered to Turbo and Nos in Johannesburg. Poovern raced the car a few times and realised that the car was too clean to race! All he needed to fit was bigger tyres and only way to do that was to cut the rear arches. And after that the bug bit him and so he started the never ending Project, and still today he wants to do more to the beastly Corolla.
