START LOOKING AT YOUR BUSINESS AS A BRAND AND WORK AT IT EACH DAY TO PROMOTE IT

trategic Marketing is a hot topic at the moment. One of the fundamental reasons why we continue to grow and strive at Gas Magazine is that over the years we manage to adapt. We survived the economy crunch, the Digital media takeover as well as the competition. As we continue to strive to achieve our goals we constantly learn each and every day. To gain the competitive edge, we apply this new found knowledge. If you are reading my editorial for the first time and have never heard of our brand, here’s a crash course. Gas Magazine is a print and digital publication that is freely available on our website www.gasmagazine.co.za as well as the Issuu International App. Over the years we evolved from a humble 8 page A5 brochure to the magazine you see today. We pride ourselves in assisting companies with marketing solutions and brand identities. We

have hosted numerous events throughout KZN as well and also empowered more designers and photographers with each day. Our constant hunger for information and building networks are the key factor to our success. Having social media presence or a web page but not managing it suitably is a complete waste of time. I know it sounds harsh but many great ideas that could have turned into profitable business ventures closed or liquidated due to poor marketing. Taking an exhibition stand at an event needs pre event marketing and the enticement to encourage consumers. The generation of leads at an event is constantly needed and the follow up on leads is essential, this combination determines your return on investment. To all business owners or potential entrepreneurs, start looking at your business as a brand and work at it each day to promote it.

will see the last drag event of the year take place at Dezzi Raceway. KZN Drag Racing and Gas Magazine guarantee the most diverse line up of street modified cars in the land. We will make sure that the sticky stuff is laid down for the first 60ft so expect some seriously fast exit speeds. Tickets are available at the gates , Gates open at 8am.

The Porsche Cayman GT4… So much has been said and written in the media about the muchanticipated GT4 before, and since its release. Just about every motoring-related TV Show, portal, website and magazine out there have showered the GT4 with accolades, praise and awards... Well, I don’t want to bore you with stuff that’s already been said and written about the GT4. I’d like to tell you about my own experience with GT4s. - Like our recent two-thousand-kilometre round trip from Durban to the Lowveld and back in a Cayman GT4 when a good friend of mine, Chris, asked me one of those dumb questions that I usually answer with an equal dose of dumb

12 | Issue 38 | www.gasmagazine.co.za

sarcasm; “So what do you do when you find yourself entering a corner way too fast?”. To which I responded; “Pray very quickly when you find yourself in a situation like that, provided there’s enough time to pray before you go over the cliff edge…” The next day saw our group carving canyons on those spectacular roads leading towards Barberton, with Chris riding shotgun with me. The GT4 is something to behold when you’re pushing the limits on roads like that. The harder I pushed this car, the more composed it felt…

THE CAYMAN GT4 DELIVERS CONFIDENCE, SPEED & COMFORT, WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU EXPECT – IT IS A PORSCHE! www.gasmagazine.co.za | Issue 38 | 13

It’s almost as if the GT4 was telling me; “Is that all you got? – Bring it on man!”… And that’s exactly what I did – pushing harder and harder, up to that point where you suddenly get that most uncomfortable feeling in your chest when you realise you’ve just entered a downhill, off-camber, decreasing radius hairpin corner and you’re coming in way too hot! Chris’ right foot thrashed his imaginary brake pedal through the firewall. I had just about enough time to concentrate on the last remaining options – Don’t panic, dab the brakes briefly – Look through the corner and turn in firmly without yanking the steering wheel – Try not to unsettle the car - Hold a smooth line through the corner Balance the car with just enough throttle to avoid engine braking - and last, but not least - Put all your trust in the car and the four contact patches - Hope it all works out and don’t run wide into the opposite lane on the exit. Phew! The GT4 pulled it off effortlessly with just about enough time for Chris’ quick prayer. He-he-he… Jokes aside, the G-forces we experienced in that corner were phenomenal. The GT4 held its line and exited that corner like it was fired from a cannon. Yet, it felt like it was on rails. We had just experienced a modern Porsche chassis connected to a modern Porsche sports suspension with phenomenal grip provided by modern tyres. Everything worked in unison, but what really impressed me, was the unbelievable level of sheer lateral grip this car provided! GT4s come with either Michelin or Dunlop rubber, 295/30 ZR20 Rears and 245/35 ZR20 Fronts. Whilst I can’t speak for the Michelins (I’m sure they’re equally good), I can most definitely vouch for the

14 | Issue 38 | www.gasmagazine.co.za

Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres on this GT4. I had my doubts when I first examined the tread pattern and depth of the Dunlops, but they’ve exceeded all my expectations in terms of grip and tyre life. I’ve driven proper race cars on big brand full slicks with less grip than the Dunlop street-legal semis on this GT4 and with +/- 15000kms of hard work on these tyres, they have countless heat cycles under the belt and are well and truly worn now, but still provide double the grip level and tyre life I expected. Perhaps the GT4’s basic geometry and dynamics have a lot to do with how it treats tyres. As most experienced racers and track junkies will tell you – Tyre wear usually tells a story about the balance of a car. Can it be that this car’s mid-engine arrangement is actually better than the GT3’s rear engine cantilevered over the rear axle? GT4 versus the GT3s… Until recently I owned a very nice Speed Yellow 996 GT3, a track tool with all the right stuff, properly maintained and set up by M&R Motors in Joburg. On a race track that car was a scalpel, a car that would always do exactly what you wanted it to do. You could hang the ass out as you entered the pit straight to show off to the people on pit wall. You could drive it like a hooligan and the car would drift like a hooligan, or you could dial in just the right amount of slip angle and drive it super-fast, lap after lap… A proper, well-set-up 996 GT3 will always reward you in a neat, clean and fast manner without any nasty surprises. However, since I’ve been getting used to the grip of the GT4, I’ve realised that it is faster on corner entry and you can get back on the throttle earlier and more progressively. With the 996 GT3 I used to spend more time managing

IT’S A TRUE SPORTS CAR THAT EMBODIES ALL BASIC ASPECTS OF WHAT A SPORTS CAR SHOULD BE

the tail-happy pendulum effect of the rear engine design. And in traffic on my daily commute the 996 GT3 was a dog, compared to the GT4. I could never get close to the sweet spot of this car on public roads. It wasn’t built for the daily grind. At low revs it sounded crap, the clutch had a slight shudder and the entire driving experience felt awkward and out of place. To extract the goodness from a 996 GT3, you’d have to take it to a race track. But, in Durban we are deprived. We’re not as fortunate as the JHB guys who have Zwartkops Raceway on their doorstep where they can turn laps every Wednesday afternoon to their hearts content. Deep down I will always be a 911 guy, but I have to admit - When my good friend Mustapha Haneef introduced me to the Cayman GT4, I fell for it head over heels. This little car really ticks all the boxes for me. It’s a true sports car that embodies all basic aspects of what a sports car should be. It looks like a sports car - aggressive with fat tyres, a mid-engine-two-door-twoseater with bucket seats and a low roof. This is not a high-performance sedan passed off as a sports coupe, it’s a proper little sports car and you need to be a bit of a contortionist to get in and out of it when it’s parked in your garage, which is the tell-tale signature of all sports cars, after all... Turn the key and the engine barks into life like a wakeup call from the gods of sports car heaven. Hello 3.8-litre-385hp-Flat-Six! It’s a tad loud, especially when you live in a complex or when you fire it up in the basement parking at Gateway, but hey, this is not a cheap fourpod modified and tuned to death hatchback with a gutted exhaust, this is a thoroughbred Porsche GT car. I say it has every right to make a

statement! And if you’re an old hard-core petrolhead like me, you hit the sports button and the exhaust button before you even crank it. He-he-he... Speaking of which, the loud button opens flaps in the exhaust pipes just like any other new-generation performance car does. Nothing new there, but the Sports Button in the GT4 is quite unique. Firstly, it opens up another cooling cycle in the radiator system to prepare the car for hard aggressive driving. Secondly, the map changes to include a lovely old-school audible snap, crackle and pop through the exhaust on deceleration. Objectively, the popping exhaust adds nothing to the performance of the car, but it adds character and has generated a few subjective smiles from me, I admit. But wait, there’s more…! Perhaps the best feature of the GT4’s Sports Button is that it auto-blips the throttle for you when you downshift the 6-speed Manual Box! I scoffed at this feature in the beginning, but I’ve come to love it over time. It rev-matches perfectly and contributes a great deal towards the special character of the GT4 and ultimately, the driving experience. On the road the suspension is kinda hard, like a true Porsche GT car should be. There is a soft / hard setting button, with the soft setting tuned for the bumpy Nordschleife and the hard setting more suitable for smoother, less bumpy race tracks. Be that as it may, I hit the hard button the first time I drove this car and it’s been on that setting for the past 15000km. Yes, sometimes it gets a tad bone-jarring on bumpy roads, but I like feeling what the car’s suspension is doing and a stiff suspension transfers information to my ass-gyroscope quicker.

www.gasmagazine.co.za | Issue 38 | 15

Getting to grips with a car is like developing extended nerve endings to the four contact patches of the tyres, if you know what I mean… But let me answer the question I’ve been asked so many times – How does the GT4 compare to Porsche’s iconic Porsche GT3s? Well, given the same driver, same race track, same conditions, I reckon the GT4 will be a tad quicker than the 996 GT3, more-or-less on par with the 997 GT3, but lagging behind the 991 GT3 in terms of lap times. So…, it slots in perfectly in the modern Porsche hierarchy. GT4 surprises… This is not a huge-statement-benchmark car like the 458 was for Ferrari, it’s almost as if Porsche snuck the GT4 in as quietly as they could in an attempt to quell demand for a more aggressive mid-engine Cayman without risking the legacy of the 911 cash-cow. However, I do believe that this car caught us all by surprise. Perhaps Porsche themselves were taken aback by the accolades this little car received when they launched it onto the market. Everybody expected a good car, but nobody expected such a pleasant surprise…

16 | Issue 38 | www.gasmagazine.co.za

And now that the initial media hype is a thing of the past, the GT4 has found a sweet-spot in sports car history. People like and admire this car. It’s brought many new fans into the Porsche fold whilst hitting the nerve just right with old fart petrolhead Porsche fans like me. I believe it balances old-school drama with modern technology perfectly. It corners better than most Porsche road cars I’ve driven. Tons of grip and it can stop on a dime, but it’s also a fun car to drive with built-in character. A growling 3.8 Flat Six, coupled to a 6-speed manual that blips the throttle for you and a loud snap, crackle and pop exhaust make me want to drive this car all the time. Every drive is an event, from my daily commute in traffic, popping down to the local SPAR for bread and milk, to extended road trips. And track days once the drive plan eventually runs out, of course… Negative Issues? There are not many negatives worth mentioning, but give me a moment to ponder… Oh yes…, my wife has to wear a sports bra when we go out in the

IT’S AS IF THE STYLING MATCHES ITS PERFORMANCE AND CHARACTER

GT4 and some say the car could do with an extra 50-odd horsepower and shorter gear ratios. I agree with the latter sentiments to some extent, but all things considered - The original price point of the GT4 compared to other sports cars on the market, the condition of our roads and the fluidity of this car as a daily, a canyon-carver and track tool, the car is spot on for South African conditions. Sure, some weekend warriors will probably modify the hell out of the GT4 pretty soon and I’m really looking forward to seeing some really quick GTs competing on local race tracks. That’s a given, but for the purposes of this feature I’m looking at the GT4 as it rolled off Porsche Centre’s showroom floor… Daily use of a GT4 is not as cumbersome as you’d expect, but it is a low sports car and it doesn’t come with Porsche’s self-raising front suspension option, so you do have to watch out for steep driveways and those stupid mammoth speedbumps on Chartwell Drive in Umhlanga Rocks Village. It’s a small 2-seater car with no back seats whatsoever, so no kids in the back, sorry. The car does have two boots though. One in front like a 911 and one in the back behind the

engine cover, accessed through the rear hatch. It’s amazing how much shopping you can fit into this car with some crafty packing. Mind you, the GT4 will also save you money in a weird, but wonderful way when you’re shopping together. It’s a small car and it fills up quickly, whereas if you took the Range Rover she’d be swiping that credit card for hours to come… He-he-he. And then there’s the limited production issue. If you have any interest in the GT4 you will probably know that Porsche only built a limited number of these cars and the final allocation for South Africa is done and dusted. It’s become hard getting hold of one of these cars. Current GT4 owners are hanging onto their cars and the few used ones available on the market are demanding premium prices... Unfortunately a great pity, in my opinion. A great car, but you can’t buy one. Finally, let’s look at Form and Function… Porsche is building really pretty cars nowadays. The GT4 is no exception. It’s as if the styling matches its performance and character.

www.gasmagazine.co.za | Issue 38 | 17

This is not a ball-buster-six-foot-six-body-builder with bulky muscles, it’s more 007 Daniel Craig in a tight suit – A kinda no-nonsense, fast and purposeful look, quite symbolic of the car’s agility. Put a few of these cars together and you end up with some pretty pictures, as we discovered during the photo shoot for this feature. The cars all turned out pretty neat, all slightly different with vinyl stripe kits and if you will indulge me for a moment, I’d like to explain more... Putting stripes on a car may seem pretty straight forward and easy, but there’s more to it than just that. I believe vinyl stripes must compliment the car. Any stripe you put on a car should flow with the lines of the car and look optically correct once installed. This often requires making special templates that are first digitised and manipulated using computer software to achieve an acceptable design prior to printing, lamination and actual application. The finished job must look ‘factory’.

18 | Issue 38 | www.gasmagazine.co.za

In the end, it must look just right. There is no in-between. It’s either right, or wrong. As you will see with the cars featured here, we kept the classic Porsche stripe kits on the husband and wife yellow GT4 and white Boxster Spyder. On the red and black GT4s we deviated somewhat, but retained similar lines to suit the cars individually. The white GT4 though, turned out a genuine head-turner with 911-R style striping. The striking black-on-white tone makes the car pop out and the bonnet & roof stripes create an illusion that the car is wider than it really is... I could carry on telling you about our new generation self-healing clear paint protection film wraps, but I guess I have to show some restraint now. After all, this article is not about Amazing Glaze, it’s about the cracking little Cayman GT4… So, enough of my waffling. Let the pictures do the talking.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS WITH ASHISH “The cheapest way you can taste Formula One!” ow, you’re probably sitting there thinking this “cheap” is a couple thousand dollars for a few laps… Well, fortunately, far from that! I’m pretty sure you’ve tried a go-kart at a shopping mall or so at some point in your life. What a lot of you don’t know is that, there is a huge difference from what you and a racing driver call a “kart”. Your public “karts”, generally reach speeds of +- 36 km/h. The karts racing drivers race in, can reach speeds of up to 140+ km/h. What has this got to do with Formula One? Well, a lot… Majority of racing drivers all started their careers in karting and for good reason. Karting (proper karting that is) is an excellent way to learn car control, how to carry speed into corners, understanding the grip that slick tyres offer and much more, which in fact, all leads to what it takes to be a F1 driver. With these karts, you can feel up to 2.5 g’s in corners. That’s half of a Formula One car!

Previous post: Does driving fast make you a Racing Driver? These karts are no joke and should be taken seriously. You have to warm the brakes and tyres if you’re going to get anywhere near great lap times and there’s an art to doing it as well! The grip that these karts offer are insane! The physical strength needed to race these karts is tremendous. Bare in mind, F1 drivers (and racing drivers in general) race karts during the winter season to keep fit and sharp for the upcoming season. Probably the greatest success stories from karting is Max Verstappen, who became the youngest F1 driver in the history of the sport and the youngest to score points.

Follow my racing career : Facebook | Instagram | Ashish Narrandes (@Ashish_F1) | Twitter

20 | Issue 38 | www.gasmagazine.co.za

However, I will do a post on this a little later on. If you really want a taste of Formula One with a cheap price tag, this is your best option. These karts aren’t only fun, but they will also increase your reaction time, which will therefore make you a better driver on the road. This I promise you! Enquire about renting a Rotax kart at your local karting circuit. You may get offered a de-tuned Rotax Kart which I suggest you try for a few laps before taking a race-ready one. Tons of fun and definitely worth the experience!

The Pavilion Shopping Centre played host to a car culture, music and lifestyle spectacle that turned out to be petrol head paradise! Words: Sashen Govender | Photos: BlackBoy Photography | Streamline | AshR Photography

I

t was the night before Christmas…no wait, that’s the wrong story but this one is even more epic! When I joined Gas Magazine in April, we were in the heart of planning the biggest festival that KZN would see this year. With that being said, a major event entails a lot of planning, sleepless nights, vision and undying dedication toward it. We knew the next few months would require the best out of us and thus began the road to A

State Of Stance SA 2016. With a lot of coffee, junk food and late hours at the Gas headquarters (and constant mocking that I would resign after this show) we managed to pull it off. Fast forward! It’s event day and we arrived early at the venue after a late night of setup on the roof and mezzanine levels, making sure everything is perfect before the gates open with the crowd already queuing up at the Computicket office. The show came to life as the Superwheel

Centre Dunlop Zone Action Arena became the battlefield for Drifting and Spinning exhibitions with rolling burnouts thrown into the mix courtesy of XS promotions (Mike and Jim) as well as Reece and Joey, contributing to the overcast condition on The Pavilion’s roof top parkade. The Superwheel Centre Dunlop Action Arena was not the only attraction on the roof top level - there were also Dyno runs and a Sound Off Competition taking place as well as RC Drifting,

bike stunts and trial biking by Red Bull’s Brian Capper an a Land Rover Terrapod showcasing the vehicles capabilities. Partnered with all the activities were the food stalls and goodie stands making sure that none of the spectators went on hungry during the day. We also had some of our exhibitors showcasing their awesome products and services and now that we got those covered we can get to the main attraction – the cars! With a pre

selection event hosted at the same venue a month prior to this event, it ensured that we had some of the best cars from all over South Africa present. There was an array of automotive beauties ranging from Japanese to German motoring titans, Old School to New School, Slammed Static pavement scrapers to Bagged grounded rides! Let’s take a moment here, to say thank you to everyone who doesn’t just look

As a spectator, your boyhood dreams would have came true, as you paced through the aisles where

automotive perfection graced the floors at a vehicle as a mode of transport but rather as an oasis, something you devote your love, time and effort to (and most of the time a lot of money as well). The best thing about being a car enthusiast is that there are others like you out there that share the same passion as you do, doesn’t that excite you? That was a wrap for the rooftop; let’s get down to the mezzanine exhibition level. The Exhibition level spotted some of our renowned exhibitors with some awesome rides and products on showcase at their exhibition areas. As a spectator, your boyhood dreams would have came true, as you paced through the aisles where automotive perfection graced the floors - with the likes of a Ferrari collection, Nissan Skylines (R32-R24), an electrifying yellow Mitsubishi Evo 8, Bagged Golfs, a blue Liberty Walk M3, as well as some Old

School Rides gracing the rear end of the level and much more including the Samuel’s Group stand that had a coffee machine emitting some heavenly aromas in the air. The cars were not the only eye candy as we also had some gorgeous promo girls out and about helping out with promotion for various exhibitors. The after-party on Saturday night kicked off with various local DJ’s performing. The main stage flaunted two “Hotwheel themed” Lamborghini Gas wheels matchbox displays on either side courtesy of Vehicle Ink, that also housed the DJ deck in the middle with the likes of Ryan the Deejay, Deon Govender, Veranda Panda, Roger Goode and head liner Cassper Nyovest making magical sound waves along with other DJs. As perfect as everything turned out, we did encounter a few technical difficulties along

the way and we do sincerely apologize for that. On another note, we are extremely grateful to every exhibitor, spectator, entertainer and performing artist that made this show possible. Thank you for being a part of the biggest car culture, music and lifestyle event in KZN for 2016‌ and may the next one be even greater! To all the petrol heads- keep on keeping on! You make this scene and together let’s grow motorsport! Stay tuned to the Gas Magazine page for more info on upcoming events and catch more coverage of the event on A State Of Stance SA page as well as the after movie on the Gas Magazine website: www.gasmagazine.co.za Special thanks goes out to all exhibitors that made the show possible: Amazing Glaze, Funnell Cars, Rospa Imports, Opel City, Toyocity, Air Spring Supply Company, Dip Worx, Dreamworks, Global GTR , RedBull, Jacob

FORTUNE FAVORS THE BRAVE

JESSIE EDMUND’S TOYOTA ARISTO -

J

essie Edmunds from Florida is definitely one of the “Die Hards”, and his RHD Toyota Aristo is straight out of Japan…literally. Jessie imported the car a mere 15-months ago, and got straight to work on it, tackling maintenance items first, and then adding his personal touches over the coming year. Why an Aristo and not a US-market GS? “I wanted something different from the others with a bit of luxury and of course, because of the twin-turbo 2JZGTE motor.” I’ve always felt that the US-market got the short end of the stick with the power-plants in our Japanese luxury cars. The turbo 1JZ and 2JZ motors were cast aside for their naturally-aspirated counterparts, or swapped for larger displacement V8 engines. While the V8s are silkysmooth, there’s just an added cool factor to having a twin-turbo, luxury cruiser. Jessie’s GTE motor has been beefed up with an ARC induction box, Blitz ECU, HKS blow-off valve, Greddy intercooler, JIC Magic downpipes, and a custom exhaust with quad, titanium AMG-style tips. The exterior of Jessie’s car features a slew of one-off parts, and notso-common pieces as well. Starting with the full, Black Pearl Complete body kit, one of a very few in the US. The kit caters to a more aggressive style that fits the sporty nature of the Aristo, and the large opening in the front filled with the big intercooler backs up the aggressive looks.

John Kreuger

Custom metal fenders by ProFab are matched by widened rear quarter panels to beef up the body, and custom, retro-fitted headlights by Nax Whitmore (a S:N regular) are matched with LED tail lights out back. The VIP theme continues on the inside of the car with a full interior overhaul. Seats, headliner, door cards, you name it, they were given the VIP treatment with a red and black color scheme carried throughout. Some key features are the custom trunk setup to show off the air-ride install, and the Works-Bell/Nardi steering wheel combo with Works-Bell paddle shifters. It’s something a lot of people probably overlook, but a pretty trick modification to help make driving an automatic a little more fun. To get his Aristo sitting just right, Jessie went with a hybrid of the who’s-who of the air-ride industry. Featuring a combination of Airlift struts are paired with Accuair E-level management and Viair compressors to drop the car sitting just right. Filling up those widened arches are a custom set of AME Shallen WX wheels in XX x XX +/- XX offset for all you spec-hunters out there. Of course, where there are big wheels, there must also be big brakes. Sitting behind the AME wheels is a monster set of Futura brakes with anodized red calipers and hats. That’s an awful lot of work in 15 short months. Source:

AROUND THE

Block

Born on November 21, 1967 to the name Kenneth Block, more famously known and Ken Block today. Block is a professional rally driver with the Hoonigan Racing Division (formerly known as the Monster World Rally Team). He is also one of the co-founders of DC Shoes and aside from his God-given driving ability he has also competed in many action sports events including skateboarding, snowboarding, and motocross. Since selling his ownership of DC Shoes, Block has shifted his business focus to Hoonigan Industries, an apparel brand for auto enthusiasts. He is currently the co-owner and Head Hoonigan In Charge (HHIC) at the company.

GYMKHANA 9 - AN ADRENALIN JUNKIE’S PERFECT DOSE OF MADNESS! It was way back in 2008 that the Internet first got wind of Block and his rather natty skills at being an absolute and utter motoring hooligan. Give this man an airfield, and he’d leave you with the smoking carcasses of many, many tyres. Because it was in 2008 that the bedrooms and offices of the world watched this Californian madman in ‘Gymkhana Practice’, the first in a series of videos that would establish Block and his rally-spec motors as icons of tyre-shredding excess. He’s back with Gymkhana Nine, which aims to rekindle the simple, grass-roots, gritty driftyness of the first. It’s called, ‘Raw Industrial Playground’, and it’s a fine demonstration of just why Mr Block has wormed his way into many enthusiasts’ heart. The levels of sheer hoonery he manages to achieve in his 600bhp Focus RS Rallycross car beggars belief. If by some ungodly reason you have not seen the latest in the Gymkhana Series then log onto Youtube and enter “[HOONIGAN] Ken Block’s GYMKHANA NINE: Raw Industrial Playground” into the search tab… you’re welcome!

eing a RunX enthusiast, Jitesh Mohun took his stock standard RunX TRD and added his personal style and pizazz to it. Fitted with only the best, AirLift Performance (from Air Spring Supply Company), it takes just a touch of a button to slam it down to earth. With AirLift Performance not supplying kits for the Toyota RunX, a universal kit was purchased and modified by Jitesh himself. Complementing the kit, he opted for 2 VIAIR 380cc compressors and an aluminium tank with a solenoid management system.

www.gasmagazine.co.za | Issue 38 | 47

INTERIOR: Standard TRD Interior SOUND: Samsung 7 inch Tablet for head unit Pioneer Mids and Tweeters 2x Targa 12-inch Subwoofers

48 | Issue 38 | www.gasmagazine.co.za

If you are a Toyota fan, you would know that the RunX TRD was a special limited edition of which only 200 were manufactured in South Africa. The lucky few that did get their hands on one, preserved it in its original state as delivered from the factory. Holding its value 9 years later, with people still willing to pay close to the original retail price, it is definitely one of the rare jewels in the Toyota family. A stock RunX TRD is good for about 141-kW. Being a naturally aspirated engine at the coast, there is no need for too many modifications to the engine. An INJEN cold air induction and 63-mm exhaust with an 88-mm downpipe were the only performance mods installed to the car. A must for any TRD! A strut brace, designed by the Japanese is fitted as a standard extra on this edition to stiffen up that top end rides and improve the handling.

What “Wheel-gap”! Jitesh’s current choice of wheels are a set of 17inch fiteen52 Formula TR replica wheels with 185/35/17 Nankang Tyres that gives his ride that perfect no wheel-gap. Dropped down to its lowest settings, this car not only removes cat eyes but also leaves its signature on the tar. Unlike most cars with a double din or mp3 player, Jitesh decided to be unique and had a 7-inch Samsung tablet fitted which runs of the aux input of a JVC DVD Player. The sound setup consists of 2 Targa amplifiers, 2 Targa subwoofers, Pioneer super-tweeters and mids. With the car being a masterpiece in its own right, Jitesh enjoys every aspect of the TRD. From the screaming INJEN when he hits lift at 6200-rpm, to causing a stir amongst crowds when he ‘airs out’, this Toyota RunX TRD sets the bar pretty high in its own league.

What is Stance? Stance culture is not such new phenomenon as one may think. Lots of people suppose that “stance” is a concept similar to “drop” though they’re wrong. “Stance” and “drop” have a lot if common but “stance” is something more profound and significant than just drop. Actually the basis of stance culture is reducing of clearance. If you take a look at a stanced car you’ll probably get a little bit astonished. Such vehicles seem to touch the ground not only with their wheels but with the whole body so they really look like something very vulnerable and fragile. How can such a car pass a speed bump or survive after coming across a pothole? Well, those guys who carry out such modifications are definitely ready for all these troubles otherwise they would hardly drop their cars so low.

How to Stance your car?

Springs

Car modification is a divisive subject. Some regard it as an insult to car engineers, as well as to their own eyes and ears. For others, “slamming” or “stancing” their car is a way of life, taking up hefty amounts of both their time and their monthly paycheck as the owners pursue their vision of automotive perfection. Slamming aficionados are taking the culture to ever-new heights; stanced Ferraris are not unheard of, while generally the level of sophistication within the scene is impressive, to say the least. There are a few ways to slam your vehicle: firstly, you could use lowering springs which is the most affordable way... following that is Performance Coilovers which is a bit more expensive than springs. The more expensive and exclusive option is Air suspension. We speak to local experts Chris Scott and Desmond Govenden on the Pro’s and Con’s of Static (Springs and Coilovers) and Air Suspension and get their input on the Stance scene in South Africa.

Air Suspension

Coilovers

According to DES FIRSTLY WHAT IS STANCE?

Stance is (the way in which your vehicle stands) Yes it is not the true definition of the word STANCE, but in the motoring enthusiasts mind, this is the definition that thousands if not millions follow WORLWIDE. Speaking of worldwide, the Stance following has been one of the fastest growing internationally and the Quest to be the LOWEST still remains the target. Being a Coilover and suspension supplier at DY Performance, we have been watching this trend evolve over the past years and it has truly developed into something spectacular.

STATIC?

What they say! Lacking in movement, action, or change, especially in an undesirable or uninteresting way. What we say! Static is a term used by fellow petrol heads describing the Stance of the Car when either springs or Coilovers are used to lower the vehicle to its utmost lowest point. In this way the vehicle does not need to be driven like that!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------COILOVERS – PROS

- You can individually adjust each coilover height according to your preferences - On certain coilovers you can adjust the dampening on each coilover i.e.: softness or hardness of the ride (this alters the valveing inside the shock to accommodate for different driving settings) - Gives you a more steady and stable ride - Increases road handling - Decreases body roll of vehicle - Improves braking - On the higher range coilovers you can set the rebound on each coilover, as well as camber on the front wheels as well - Creates great STANCE - The perfect solution to a budget setup

COILOVERS – CONS - You have to jack the vehicle up each time you want to alter the height - Entry level coilovers only come with height adjustments only - On certain entry level coilovers when adjusting the height, the ride quality changes and becomes bouncy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------SPRING KITS – PROS

- Slightly more stiffer than OEM ride quality - Better road handling than OEM springs - Used worldwide to decrease wheel gap

SPRING KITS – CONS

- Only available in drops up to 35mm and in certain modern cars only drop by 60mm _ Once fitted there isn’t any adjustments that can change the height - Limited to only what’s available for each vehicle

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ask yourself the following before contemplating lowering your vehicle: - Do I race the vehicle? (height and dampening coilover kit is the way to go) - Do I drive the vehicle daily? ( either spring kit or coilover) - Do I just want to cover the wheel gap? ( lowered spring kit) - Do I want it slammed just for shows and looks – not bothered about the ride ( entry level coilover kit)

With this in mind I’m sure you fellow readers will now have a slightly better idea when contemplating a lower ride The South African Stance Scene has definitely evolved rapidly over the past few years and in my opinion , I can honestly say that we are on par with international standards A BIG THUMBS UP TO ALL LOW-LIFES OUT THERE - Desmond Govenden, DY Performance

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CHRIS talks Air WHAT IS STANCE WITHOUT AIR?

The Adjustability with Airlift! No other suspension gives you the ability to comfortably drive your car daily, slam it to the ground for show-winning stance, or tear up your favourite race track all with the touch of a button and twist of a knob. Airlift Performance slogan is “ Drive it. Show it. Track it.” We do it for real!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------AIR SUSPENSION – PROS

-Slam your ride down for an aggressive show stance that is lower than most coil overs. - Raise it up to clear road obstacles like speed bumps or steep angle transitions. - Enhance your ride quality for comfort using damping and air pressure adjustments. - Create a track-ready set-up with stiff damping, progressive-rate air springs and in many cases adjustable camber. - Instantly adapt to increased weight changes. - Decrease ride height without sacrificing ride quality.

AIR SUSPENSION – CONS

- More expensive than coil-spring suspensions. - Installation process more complex. - Installation process more expensive. - More components required. - Permanent chassis modifications necessary in some instances

STANCE IN SOUTH AFRICA?

The Stance scene has grown in leaps and bounds over the past 5 years, the biggest problem South Africa faces is the economy. It’s difficult to get your hands on quality parts at affordable prices that have opened up the gap for cheaper products and alternatives to dominate the market. Not many stance addicts look into the products they are fitting, they are more about being low than being safe. Airlift Performance products are approved in many countries but not in South Africa because of the approach many of us take when modifying vehicles. Why fit decent coil overs or Airlift suspension kits when you can just cut your springs or remove them entirely? This attitude has got us into the mess we currently in with local authorities! Your suspension is your life; make sure you look into the products you thinking of purchasing, these are the questions you need to ask yourself: • Where are my parts manufactured? • How are they manufactured? • How long has the company been around? • Do they offer me a warranty? • Are they able to back up their warranty? • Do they have any certification as manufactures? Living the low is a lifestyle. Living low and being safe is a choice we all need to look at. Airlift Performance – Lower you ride not your Standards! - Christopher Scott, Air Spring Supply Company

ou’ve always seen captions making its way around the net saying, “Nothing beats a long drive with a group of friends”. With the car scene in Durban blooming more and more each day, I decided that I want to do something different. So after approaching Nalendren Naik & Clement Msomi aka Dbn Spotter, proposing my idea to them, we set forth immediately and started planning. Before I say more #DurbanTakeOver was basically a social event consisting of a drive from point A to point B including a bring and braai. The whole purpose of our event was to get guys to socialize and have a good time, we also firmly stated that no matter

56 | Issue 38 | www.gasmagazine.co.za

what type of car it is that you drive, that you would’ve been welcome to join us. Within a few hours posters were rolling out and we began bombarding social media day in day out. We tried our utmost best to get as many prizes as possible to give away. As days got closer the stress and anxiety set in, first being the possible chance of rain, and secondly the fear of not having a good enough crowd. The day had arrived and we were surprisingly welcomed by a wide variety of some really good cars, from a 2016 Ford Focus RS to an Alfa Romeo 4C. The colors which radiantly burst out mixed with

bright natural sunlight were definitely a very big eye catcher. After rounding of all the cars, getting the guys to sign their indemnity forms, we were finally ready to leave. Cameras were ready to snap some rolling shots, GoPros mounted and Drones up in the sky. Our lead car, the Alpha Romeo 4C, which is surprisingly quite nippy and sounds amazing lead the pack followed by approximately 70 cars. We left from Pick n Pay Hyper (Durban North) and drove up the M4 ending at the well-known Beach Bums. After an amazing drive, may I also add that we had strict rules regarding the drive which all our drivers gladly adhered to. Once we arrived, everyone parked off. The

guys from Redbull kept the crowd entertained with their really cool van, which is indeed a DJ’s paradise. The smell of burning charcoal which lead to the aroma of braai’d meat, good music, great weather, amazing cars and even better people. One can only imagine what a lovely day that was. I would like to thank Reflec Detailing for coming on board and awarding one of our lucky winners Kamiel Chetty to get his beastly Nissan Skyline GTR R32 a full detail valued at R1500 as well as Redbull for the supply of Redbull and their really great DJ. Reynold Duki was the lucky winner of our Photo-shoot and video-shoot give away.

With Sanjiv Singh

Sanjiv is our local GAS Superbike contributor. He has been riding and racing bikes since he was ten years old and is a mechanical engineer by training. For 2016 he will be contesting the ZX10 Cup and in between races he can be found falling off his dirt-bike at the local Moto-X tracks or pottering around town on a dog-slow 1700cc V-twin.

liss, nirvana, samadhi…call it what you like. We all seek it and it lurks just behind lids of closed eyes as we imagine a state of perfection. 150 kw bolted onto just 190 kg, screaming at 14,000 rpm scrabbling a tortured contact-patch the size of a credit-card in a dance between friction, momentum, gravity and disaster becomes paradise when, even if for just a fleeting moment, it all hangs frozen in perfect balance. The ideal corner exit is important if you are a track-day rider looking to improve your lap times or a racing- snake looking to defend into the next corner. One of the keys, and simultaneously one of the best bang-for-yourbuck mods you can make to your bike is to invest in some gearing kit. You will need a chain breaker / riveting tool, a handful of master links and a couple of chains. 520 is the most commonly used size so the conversion is usually worth it. Buy the best quality racing chains you can afford. They will last longer, save your sprockets and reduce drivetrain friction. You will need a

few chains so that you can adjust the wheelbase (long or short) of your bike for different chassis characteristics. Next, depending on your bike, you will need 2 or 3 front sprockets and a range of rear sprockets. For a ZX10R 15 & 16 fronts and 39,40,41,42,43 & 44 rears provides a sufficient range for most South African tracks. Finally you will need to calculate, print out and laminate a gear-ratio table for your toolbox. Then the fun begins! Get down to the track and start testing different ratios. It most usually ends up being a compromise. Let your sector splits and exit speeds guide your choices. (If you don’t have a data-logger just download one of the many decent apps available for your smartphone) For a relatively small amount of money and a few quick sums, you will be powering out of corners and flying down straights…dropping your mates who might have spent huge chucks of cash on expensive engine mods.

New equipment: THE HELMET FOR YOUR NECK The Leatt STX RR, a work of art

Dr Chris Leatt, of Cape Town, started designing his now famous neck-brace after seeing Alan Selby killed in 2001. By 2006 they were in mass production. The first Leatt brace for road motorcycles was released in 2011 and now the first road-racing brace, the Leatt STXRR is available here in South Africa. I have been testing this innovative product for Leatt this season. Upon unpacking it, the build quality and super-light alloy / carbon-fibre construction immediately impresses. The product is a work of art. Adjustment and fitting takes only a few minutes. Having done a hundreds of laps and half a season of racing with it I can tell you that when you wear it, you hardly notice that it is there, except for the re-assuring bump-stop when you crank your neck to the absolute limit of its range of motion. Although, I am very glad to say, I haven’t tested it in a high impact crash, there are reams of data showing why you should wear one. Quite frankly, unless there is conclusive evidence to show that it is a bad idea, investing a few thousand rand to decrease the chance of sustaining a serious spinal injury is a no-brainer. Go and buy one.

KHETAN’S 650 HP N/A FORD CORTINA IS PACKING V8 DYNAMITE UNDER THE HOOD AND IT’S DEFINITELY READY FOR BATTLE! www.gasmagazine.co.za | Issue 38 | 69

t’s not every day that you get to see a golden oldie Ford Cortina, for people who love old school classics they would really appreciate this immaculate piece of art. Besides its neat body, beneath the hood it is packing a V8 Chevrolet 355 which gives off approximately 650hp. We found a perfect spot to snap some photos until we were ready to hit the road to get the mandatory rolling shots. The sound which this beast gave off upon starting sent a shiver down my spine. Once we hit the road many people

After an approximate 5km drive following this beast and being out of a moving car to capture some awesome photos, we were done. It was definitely worth it after seeing the results. The owner, Khetan Pandey, who owns many other cars, says that once he takes his pride and joy out it gets parked off in his garage, wiped down and kept in until it’s time to come out and play again.

RACE SA’s

DRAG RACE

Words & Photos: Javon Francis

AT ODI RACEWAY

t was that time of year where the big guns came out to play. Race SA’s 1km all out showdown of the fastest rides in SA, going head to head at ODI Raceway in Johannesburg. I find 1km drag races are always fun because you can never expect the outcome. You can have a crowd favourite who puts up an awesome launch off the line but in the end, not enough performance to get his ride past the line faster than the tail happy competitor who really didn’t expect to even win. And this is why Race SA’s 1km Drag Race turned out so crazy. The first run of the day was a menacing Toyota Supra whose burnout had the crowd’s ears bleeding. He launched off the line perfectly with a bit of tail action here and there but once he lined up half way down the track he finished strong, so strong that it was one of the fastest times of the day. The car crossed the line and when it was time to brake, that’s when it all went wrong. The car locked up and sent him spinning

The cars that raced were nothing short of “stupidly quick”

78 | Issue 38 | www.gasmagazine.co.za

1km

straight into the sand. The driver came out ok but the car was not even able to do another run and had to be towed out the sand. With this crash being the opener of the day the marshals had their hands full but handled the matter perfectly. The race was stopped until the marshals decided that it was safe to race again. Once the green light was given all hell broke loose, it was like a war of the tuners. Almost every major tuning company was out giving it everything they got. Even Rob Green was behind the scenes tuning a really vicious BMW M6. The cars that raced were nothing short of “stupidly quick”. There were your regular Skylines, then scary green Skylines that had little kids running to their mother for cover every time it started up. I don’t know what it costs to get some of these cars this fast but whatever they paid it was worth it! The best part about this event was the diversity, and I know I always talk about diversity in every event but this event had something different. It had the kind of cars you had pasted on your bedroom wall

as a kid but now they were right in front of your eyes, only this time they are ten times faster than you could of dreamed them to be on that poster. It was so diverse that I spotted an R32, R33 and R34 Skyline, a Noble M12 GTO and even a very rare Audi RS2 which to me was the most breath taking thing to find driving around. If you’re not into rare and wonderful cars and you’re more of a new age exotic car porn boffin, then your taste buds would have been satisfied too. For the first time I saw a Mclaren 570S on the start line of a 1km drag race which was cool because it’s a really sophisticated track car, designed to handle the twists and turns of the most challenging tracks. No spice intended that to me was exciting but a little bit of an anti-climax to have something that has spent engineers years to perfect going around a bend and here it is driving in a straight line. But exotics aside I want to take your attention back to that R32 Skyline I spoke about. Being a photographer you always have the best seats in the house, which isn’t really a seat

but more of a yellow painted area in the middle of the start line. So while going through my images standing in my little space in the middle of the track, I hear the most ear busting backfire and turbo dump I have ever heard in my life. There was an R32 Skyline doing his pre-race burnout but his engine and back fire was so loud I firstly let go of my camera and held my ears which didn’t help much because even after I let go they were still ringing. I literally had an earache for 2 weeks after this event just because of that car and I still don’t think my ears have healed properly. The bark of this R32 definitely backed up the bite because on the track it demolished the 1km with one of the fastest times being posted for the day. And on that note of fast I spotted a veteran racer who looked to be in his 60’s out in a really mean Evo and this was not an Evo with Stage 2 trying his luck, this Evo had a whole lot of bits of aero dynamic pieces with a huge hole coming out the bonnet which looked to be a turbo the size of my head. And this guy was just chilling

It had the kind of cars you pasted on your bedroom wall

RACE SA’s

DRAG RACE AT ODI RACEWAY

Race SA really out did themselves with this event

like he would on his patio with his grand kids running around. By far he was the coolest veteran I’ve seen and his Evo was one of the fastest cars on track. This is why diversity is so important! Race SA really out did themselves with this event, and one of the biggest aspects of this event that I admired was the safety consideration of the

80 | Issue 38 | www.gasmagazine.co.za

public. Race SA really made it the priority of the event next to the fun factor. So all in all it was one of the best 1km drag races I’ve been to and you can definitely look forward to seeing me next year. I have to give a shout out to Nazzy for putting this event together and for his hospitality throughout the event. I hope to get an invite next year!
