LARSONS CREATIVE CONCEPTS: CUSTOM PAINT AND TATTOO

One day I was rolling on by on my motorcycle and pulled up next to a truck with a sick paint job. I look over and it said Larsons Creative Concepts. ordered some out of state and cleaned my motorcycle with it. This is a great product and Gasoline recommends it to anyone who owns a motorcycle or custom automobile. It comes in 7 ounce and 12 ounce sizes, and can fit in your back pocket. Go to your local shop and tell them to get this into North Dakota. If it is all ready here, let us know where to purchase it locally. www. stripperjuice.net NDRACING.COM & GRASSROOTS MAGAZINE

North Dakotans are always looking for news regarding the motorcycle culture. From street to dirt, Gasoline magazine is trying to bring you all the information. The dirt part we can’t keep up with all the time, so that’s when you check out www.ndracing.com to find out more information on the race track, dirt track and stunting. This is a great web site for everyone to find the information they need to get out and enjoy the motorcycle lifestyle. Another business we found in North Dakota is Grassroots Magazine out of Minot, North Dakota. Why would we review another motorcycle magazine in North Dakota? These guys are awesome for the dirt side of motorcycling and when a business out of North Dakota can bring excellent information to the public, we want to make sure people know to check it out. Go to www.ndracing.com and pick-up Grassroots at your local dealer or go to www.grassrootsmotocross.com. www.gasolinemag.com

If you live in the Bismarck/Mandan area there’s a chance you may have seen this bike on the streets. At first look you might have thought you passed some sort of outlaw biker from the 60s. Actually, who you passed was a fellow by the name of Ryan Savenko. If you’ve ever met him you know he’s not really an outlaw, but actually one of the nicest guys you’ll ever know. He’s also got a super cool custom Harley that started life as a 2002 Softail. Gasoline recently stopped by Ryan’s shop to check it out. The bike hardly resembles any sort of stock Harley you’d find in the dealership these days. Instead, with numerous parts stripped off and a few new ones tastefully added to suit his style, Ryan’s bike looks like it may have been born in the early 60s instead of only a few years ago. The only hint is the modern twin cam engine that adds power and reliability that bikers 50 years ago could only dream of. The simplicity of Ryan’s bike may be what makes it so eye-catching. Simple, on the other hand, may not be the best word to describe riding this machine. Maybe one of the coolest features is the jockey shift setup with foot clutch. If you’re not familiar with this, the clutch is operated with your

left foot and shifting is accomplished via your left hand with a short shifter located below the seat area on the left side of the bike. Now go ahead and take away the front brake. Think for a minute… That leaves both feet pretty busy as you pull up to a stoplight unless that sucker's in neutral. How many people do you know with the cojones to ride a bike like that? Ryan Savenko does it. Respect. 9 www.gasolinemag.com

menoken Abate of North Dakota

2009 Motorcycle Rally By Scooter Pursley Photo Credits: Scooter Pursley

When the late Lloyd Salter was asked if he would let some of his land east of Bismarck be used once a year for a bike rally, he eagerly agreed. When people started showing up on two wheels and a motor, he was caught slightly off-guard, but went ahead and allowed folks to gather in the secluded spot anyway. Thus the birth of the gathering now known simply as “Menoken.” “Lloyd was a little surprised the first time,” said Janet Frost, marketing and promotions director for North Dakota ABATE and biker who’s been around from the start. “But he was real good about it.” The relationship with the landowners’ heirs is still strong today. That’s why the rally celebrated its 34th year in June. “This is a like a pilgrimage, It won’t cease. It will go forever,” Frost said. “It’s the family reunion you want to go to.” And people come year after year for a variety of reasons, mainly the camaraderie. On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in June – the first nice weekend of the year – bikers from all across the Northern Plains line the “downtown” area in the grove to watch biker games, drink up and bullshit with buddies. The ABATE of North Dakota state rally as it’s officially known may have had an inauspicious beginning, but it is an annual event that draws bikers from as far away as Kansas, Colorado and even Alaska. If you haven’t been there, put it on the schedule for next year. Those looking for the rally site on approach from Interstate 94 won’t see more than a few bikes at any given time kicking up dirt on the frontage road that leads down to the 4-H camp and surrounding land where the rally is held. Down in the grove, less than a mile from the interstate, it’s a different story. It’s a three-day party where friendships are rekindled, bike games and people games are played and live music blares from early evening until near sun-up. For one weekend, sleep is overrated. Those that do need a few minutes of shut-eye crawl under a tree or amble back to their tent 18

or camper in the “North 40.” Vendors are there to provide food, drink (lots of it), merchandise and more. Need a nipple ring? Step up. Chaps? Got ’em. That awesome halter top? Oh yeah. Patches? Over here. Frost says it was important to have everything people could want right there on-site. That way folks don’t have to drive anywhere once they arrive. ABATE is about safe riding, after all. And

the authorities are aware of the date, too. (They will be watching). “We are self-contained once you’re here,” Frost said. “That’s the true idea of this event. We encourage people to ride in and enjoy a weekend of brotherhood.” People arrive in different ways now, some on bikes with tents, others in large mobile homes. That’s one of the big differences between the old days and now. Mostly they arrive on two wheels. Frost estimates average attendance to be between 1,500 and 2,000 people, regardless of the weather.

In 2001, a hail storm ravaged the area and Menoken was not spared.“It was a scramble,” Frost recalled. “They said everybody head for cover. It was crazy. People were parking bikes in tents to keep from getting hailed on. I held a sleeping bag over mine. When all was said and done we looked like drowned rats. Then we resumed having a good time. “The bottom line is weather, unless it is a danger to be riding in, is not a factor. You can dampen our parade, but not our spirits.” That goes for all the rally-goers, new and old alike. They may be older, but few things have changed. “Tents and bikes is the way it originated,” Frost said. “Now with our demographics, we’re getting older. Sleeping on the ground or on our bikes like we used to isn’t befitting our bodies anymore. We see more campers coming through.” Still, the campfires flicker throughout the night and laughter echoes through the “North 40,” as people talk and drink the night away. “Downtown” the music continues. Frost laughs about some of the “shenanigans” that have gone on throughout the years. “You have to pull pranks on friends, she said. One thing missing from the rally is the animosity that sometimes exists between different riding clubs. All are urged to check their differences at the door in order to keep the Menoken rally a peaceful gathering for patch club members and the general riding public. “If they’ve got a beef, that gets left at the door and everybody forgets about it and has a good time,” Frost said.

The Lot, what used to be a parking lot for RVs is now a playground for sport bikes. KTM Cycle Hutt purchased the old Riverwood RV building a couple of years ago and now, for employees like Derek Schaff, he has a place to stunt and not worry about being in anyones way or watching out for traffic. "If people want to stop by and watch, they are more than welcome to stop and take some photos and talk with the riders" said Schaff. Instead of writing a great article about stunting for all of the fans out there, we know you would rather see some sick photos taken over the beautiful 80 degree weekend. Gasoline stopped by the lot to snap some photos and hang out with people who love being on motorocycles. Anything can happen at the lot, from crashes to people stealing rocks from the enduro course being built at the lot. If you ever see these guys stunting, stop by and watch, we are sure your jaw will drop after seeing these guys throw out some sick tricks. Just don't try to steal the rocks.

Ride Safe After a long spring with snow and rain, summer time has finally hit North Dakota. I want to take this time to talk about motorcycle safety. Just the other day I was riding with my six-year-old niece, April, on the back of my motorcycle. I never really thought too much about motorcycle safety until April started to love riding with me. I was that guy who never wore a helmet, gloves, or the correct riding apparel. Since April started riding with me though all that has changed. When April rides with me I always have correct riding apparel on because I am always telling her to “put your helmet on” and “wear proper shoes.” If you have ever tried to tell a six-year-old to do something, then you know they will make sure that you are doing the same thing as well. It is very important to make sure that your passenger knows how to ride safely. Besides the correct gear, always make sure that your little passenger can touch the rear pegs and that you go over the rules of good passenger riding with whoever is riding with you. This whole story popped into my head because the other day when I was riding with April I noticed how many people on the road don’t respect motorcycles. We were stopped at a red light and this guy in an old station wagon kept creeping up behind us until he was only about an inch away, and he though it was the funniest thing ever. What do you do when something like this happens? I wanted to jump off my bike and kick the guys’ headlights in. But… then I thought about it and remembered that I had a little sixyear-old riding with me, and what 26

kind of an uncle would I be if I taught her to do that? (Granted she would have hopped off the bike and been right there doing the same thing with me). Instead, I just took off at the green light, turn on to another street, and forgot about the incident. People need to learn how to look out and respect motorcycle riders and not be complete pricks. Motorcycle riders also need to learn how to handle these situations in a respectable, safe manner and not let them affect their thinking for the rest of the ride. What I have learned from riding is to act like everyone is out to get you and to ride on the defense all the time. If you want to learn more about kid and passenger safety on motorcycles, stop by your local dealer to find out what they offer. Also, don’t forget to watch out this summer for those few inconsiderate people and to ride safe! Adios MF - Chad Hatzenbuhler

STURGIS We recognize that even though the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is the largest and most recognizable of the motorcycle rallies in the world, there are a few who have held off making their plans to visit in the first week of August. As a city of riders, we welcome you to see for yourself how this event has grown and evolved into the most anticipated event of the year.

LITTLE KNOWN SECRETS AND HIDEAWAYS Hid along highway 385 just 4 miles outside of Deadwood is a rider’s special treat www.gasolinemag.com

of extended history and good product. Travino’s Leathers has been outfitting riders for more than three decades from their storefront along historic and beautiful 385. The road from Sturgis through Vanocker Canyon is still marked as gravel on some maps, but it's now a paved scenic ride that can serve as the scenic byway into and out of Sturgis. This route takes on a new character as the day goes from morning to night and until more riders catch on, it’s the quickest way to Sturgis’ Junction Avenue.

KNOW THIS BEFORE YOU ROLL OUT The best riding in the nation isn’t straight and narrow roads. Known as the best riding on two wheels, the Black Hills are filled with curves, angled banks, narrow passage ways, bridges, scenic passes and an occasional piece of nature taking the road right-of-way. Once you arrive for your stay, pick up a Rally road map at a local gas station; these are the most current and fold nicely to store in your pocket! Before you take on the challenge get yourself comfortable with sharp curves, rolled curves and tire-track control.

www.baaabaaa.com we specialize in garage culture marketing/advertising design and anyone looking to stand out from the flock.

The greater Black Hills’ weather isn’t well known for being predictable. A long history of thunderstorms, lightning incidents, strong winds and heavy rain means that riders and visitors should be ready on all fronts. If you plan to be out on your bike for an afternoon and into the evening, you will be happy to have your leathers when the sun sets. Temperatures drop quickly and little cloud cover allows for the hot day to disappear in thin air. If you are taking in the whole experience and staying in a tent or RV during the Rally make sure to pack up and secure your gear before you leave for an extended period of time. Tents take quite the beating if a storm front of any strength rolls through; be prepared with extra tent stakes, tarps and towels. RV’ers should keep antennas, awnings and vent covers in mind before heading out for a day trip. *If you’re staying at the Legendary Buffalo Chip a Cabelas Store is conveniently located on grounds in case the weather had different plans for your camping arrangement! The state of South Dakota prohibits bikes riding two abreast in a single lane and requires all riders to wear eye protection
