words from
Well friends, we're sad to say it's once again time for us to say farewell for the winter months. We will be heading to Hawaii to live in a grass hut with no computers for the entire winter so that means there'll be no new issues of Gasoline till next year. It's hard to believe we are already wrapping up our second season here at Gasoline. It seems like both a short, and long time ago that we were scratching our heads while putting issue number one together. That was just over one year ago and now we're wrapping up our 8th issue. Hopefully you've noticed some improvements as we've gone along. Working the kinks out and making things flow smoothly takes both time and a little trial and error, but like dad always said, that's the best way to learn. We'll keep learning and making the magazine better as long as you stick with us like you have so far. What will you find in this issue? As the last issue for 2010, we wanted to make sure we went out with a bang. I'm sure everyone is looking forward to seeing some photos from our trip to Sturgis, so we'll give you lots of that. You can also check out a local stunter from right here in town, along with his bike. Hog Wild For a Cure raffle winner? That's in here somewhere also. Product reviews, ads, and my personal favorite, the table of contents page? All inside. "Oh but Gasoline, when will you be back?" We will be back next summer, but don't worry you will hear from us throughout the winter. Check out the website and our Facebook page to see what we are up to. During the offseason, we will be getting things ready for the 2011 season, including: doing photoshoots, going to events, and hopefully starting our bike build. We've also got our 2011 subscription on sale for $15.00/year. Make sure to grab one so you dont miss out on any of next year's wonderfulness! If you have any questions or want to give us some ideas, be sure to contact us: contact@ gasolinemag.com. See ya next year and thank you for being a supporter of Gasoline Magazine! www.gasolinemag.com

GASOLINE PRODUCT REVIEW Here at Gasoline we always look for products that our viewers would love to get their hands on. All products are hand-picked by the staff here at Gasoline, so if it’s in the magazine it has to be cool. If you have products you think should be in here, contact us and let us know.
Sons of Anarchy (TV Show) If you haven’t heard of Sons of Anarchy, you need to program it into your DVR and hit record. Sons of Anarchy is a high drama TV series that takes you into the world of an outlaw motorcycle club. Do they really show you the real life workings of a motorcycle club? Well probably not, after all it is a television show aimed at entertainment. Despite a tad of embellishment, the action is sure to get your blood pumping. Watching the show just might make you want to jump on your bike and ride like a bat out of hell. Anything that does that has to be a good thing. Check out Sons of Anarchy on Tuesday nights at 9pm on the FX network. Season 3 just started, so pick up Seasons 1 & 2 on DVD if you need to get caught up.
Randy James Band (Music/CD)
Blue Lightning Spark Plugs We were recently approached by Blue Lightning spark plugs to try their new spark plugs in our bikes. After about a month of running the bikes with these plugs, the changes we've seen aren't huge, but they are noticable. The bikes seem to be running smooth, and as Blue Lightning mentioned, our gas mileage has gone up a little bit. Next time you need to put spark plugs in your ride, spend a few bucks more and throw some Blue Lightning spark plugs in. It can't hurt and maybe you'll notice improvements of your own. www.bluelightningsparkplugs.com
Butty Buddy
Sick of bumping the same old tunes on your iPod? We did some local research and stumbled upon the Randy James Band out of Bismarck, ND. After listening to one of the CDs they have available, we just had 6
to let you know how great this local band sounds! They sing a lot of popular cover songs and also write music of their own. We liked them so much that we asked them to perform at our Empty Tank Bash that took place on September 25th. Hopefully you made it there and heard them in person!
Your old lady's ass hurting after riding on a folded up sweatshirt on your rear fender? Well that sucks, but you don’t want to mount a passenger seat on your stripped down chop? Well we found a product that will satisfy the wife’s bum without deterring from the cool factor of your bike. Check out the Butty Buddy! The Butty Buddy offers extra comfort by giving

your passenger a wider seat and it only weights 3lbs, so it's easy to carry with. This handy little seat will not only bring some comfort to your chick's butt, it will hopefully save you from hearing any complaining! www.buttybuddy.com
Legend Suspensions Is your body taking a beating from those long rides? Are you starting to feel old when you get off your bike? Well check out Legend Suspensions out of Sturgis, SD. They are creating some slick suspensions that save you money from going to the back specialist. The air shocks from Legend are quite unique and unlike any other shock absorber we have ever seen. Legend has done a great job adapting technology from their years of powersports experience, putting it together into their own innovative shock absorber using a Kevlar air spring (or bag), filled from an air compressor mounted on the bike. Using an internal hydraulic dampening system, size is kept similar to a conventional coil-over shock. The best thing about the air bag system, is that the pressure can be adjusted by simply pressing a button from the drivers seat. This allows the driver to change the suspension characteristics to match the current terrain or driving conditions on the fly. Support the locals by going to www.legendsuspensions.com. www.gasolinemag.com

T CHICK HOTTESR. SHE EVE IDE! CAN R
Well folks, going all summer saving both money and vacation time finally paid itself off last month. The 2010 Sturgis Rally came and went, and despite the saving, in the end I could have used more vacation time and wayyy more money. They sure don't give the beers away down there, do they? Despite our depleted bank account, we came away with another year of memories, photos, stories, and sunburn worth every penny. We rolled into town early Wednesday morning after checking in at the Broken Spoke camprground. The camp is a little north of Sturgis at the Broken Spoke county line location. It was our first time camping there but we weren't disappointed. We'll probably be return customers after this year. The price is super reasonable and there's lots to keep you busy when you're not out roaming elsewhere. Concert stage, pool, flat track racing, decent showers, and of course the bar all add to the appeal. If you haven't camped there before we recommend it.

Anyways, after checking in we headed downtown to see what was shakin'. Even though it was still pretty early, those who hadn't partied too hard the night before were already out and about. The smell of the food vendors filled the air, the constant rumble of passing v-twins filled our ears, Budweiser filled our stomachs, and smiles consumed our faces. Anyone who's been there knows the feeling. To me, the atmosphere is a sort of relaxation, a getaway from the daily grind of work and worries. For those several days you're surrounded only by the things you love. Motorcycles, beer, music, and scantily clad women. Guys know very well what I'm talking about. If you're a chick and don't see the appeal, I can only imagine it's like a day filled with shopping, craft shows, and a relaxing trip to the spa.

Before we left we fired up the ol' computer to check the weather forecast. Wednesday was supposed to be hot, but after that it looked a little iffy. Well by golly they were right about the hot. I'm not sure exactly how hot it was when www.gasolinemag.com

we were there, but it had to be closing in on 100. It never did rain while we were in town, which makes the experience a million times better. I've been there in the rain, and to me, it sucks. Even though it got a little hot at times, it makes the beer taste that much better. We spent the next few days just checking out the sights and doing what there is to do. We tried to hit all the bars downtown to help stimulate the economy as much as we could. We headed out to the Buffalo Chip to check out Michael Lichter's Eternal Combustion exhibit one of the days, which was super impressive. The exhibit featured some of the nicest bikes I've ever seen surrounded by a massive collection of Lichter's photos. It was perhaps the most awe inspiring thing I saw while at Sturgis. That or the wet t-shirt contest. 12

It's difficult to capture in a story all the different things we saw and did while in Sturgis. There is literally so much to see I could write a whole magazine worth of things. One could spend days alone just walking up and down mainstreet seeing what sorts of people and bikes come out of the woodwork for this biker heaven. Also, if we told you everything we REALLY did while in Sturgis, our old ladies might be making us sleep out in the yard for a while, and it's starting to get cold out at night. Everyone likes looking at pictures more than reading anyway, so we'll share our experience through photos. If you didn't make it down to Sturgis yourself, you can live vicariously through us and our photos! That's what we're here for. One day down the road when all the kids have a poster on their bedroom wall of Derek Schaff doing a blindfolded one hand stoppie through a burning ring of fire on a highwire above a shark tank, you can dust off this issue of Gasoline and tell 'em you knew him before he was famous. For now, Derek is still a 22 year old up-and-comer most famous around the Mandan-Bismarck stunt riding scene. If he keeps progressing at the rate he has been though, you'll have a couple of those posters on your wall before you know it. "I started stunt riding a couple years ago, learning and practicing as much as I could in KTM Cycle Hutt's parking lot," Derek told us. If we didn't know any better though, we'd guess he was standing on the seat the first time he even rode a motorcycle. If you happen to have Issue 2 of Gasoline at home in your display case, you might notice some coverage we did of riders at KTM's lot. We got to see a lot of the local stunters and even then Schaff seemed to stick out a little, and not just because his bike was a bright pukey green color at the time. 22

Since last year, Schaff's bike has undergone a little makeover, which you can see here. Along with improving his bike, Derek is constantly trying to improve himself and his arsenal of tricks. "I went to an amature competition in August down in Branson, MO, just to try it out and see what it was about. There were a ton of amazing riders that attended. Although I didn't qualify, it was a great time and learning experience. I'm hoping to complete the entire AFS(Amature Freestyle Series) in 2011," Derek explained to us. Eventually, his goal is to make it to the pro ranks. As everyone's favorite body builder Ronnie Coleman would say, "Ain't nothin' to it but to do it!" Ya hear that Derek? Next year Gasoline Magazine will be sponsoring Derek and helping him in any way, shape, or form in his quest to make it to the pros. If need be, owner Chad Hatzenbuhler will personally wash Derek's bike and do his laundry once a week all year in 2011. Attaboy, Chad! In the meantime, we'll keep you updated on Schaff's success as it comes. Check out the pics of Derek on his new ride for the season. www.gasolinemag.com

HOG WILD FOR A CURE By Dan Geiger Photo Credit: Jamie Vetter
Earlier we decided to hold a "Hog Wild For a Cure" raffle event to help raise money for a worthy cause, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The grand prize for the raffle was a new 2010 Harley-Davidson Sportster 883. Along with the bike, three secondary prizes would also be up for grabs. Throughout the last 4 months over 500 raffle tickets were sold by Gasoline Magazine owner Chad Hatzenbuhler along with numerous other willing volunteers. After showing off the bike and spreading Cystic Fibrosis awareness at many events throughout 28

the summer, everyone's hard work paid off as $2,600 was raised for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to help find a cure for the disease. By Chad Hatzenbuhler
What do we have here? Well, we recently purchased a used 125cc pit bike. Are you wondering, "why such a little dinker pit bike?" What a dumb question. The answer is, "WHY NOT a little dinker pit bike?" We're not just a street motorcycle magazine, you know. We dig anything with two wheels, and anything with 4 wheels, or any wheels really. Besides, doesn't it just LOOK like you could get into trouble on it? Spells f-u-n to us. We picked this little "beauty" of a 125cc Thumpstar pit bike up from a local viewer in Mandan, ND for 100 clams. Heck, for a hundred bucks we can take it to events and ride to the porta-potties and to get cotton candy and stuff like that. Now for that kind of money, you would expect a slick running machine with no problems, right!? Nope. When we first got her we kicked and kicked and kicked and......nothing. It did sound like maybe there was a little life deep down inside, but we couldn't exhume it. Park it in the garage. Drink beer. End of day one. Around rolls Saturday morning, time to take apart the carburetor. Those little voodoo boxes are never anything but trouble, so why not take the sucker apart and explore inside? Well guess what, inside we found what appeared to be mud and/or some sort of dried up porkchops and/or who knows? It wasn't pretty. In addition, of course when we pulled it apart, any and all gaskets disintegrated and blew away in the wind. Perfect. We went ahead and cleaned all the sludge out and headed to the local NAPA to pick up some gasket paper. You know where to score a real gasket for this carb? Me neither. Continue to page 32

Continued from page 30 Anyways, carb back together, new fuel line, new spark plug, and kick kick kick. Nothing. Drat. Scratch our heads, drink a beer, turn a few knobs and screws on the voodoo box, pray. Kick Kick Vrooooooooom! The little sucker started! And honestly it runs quite nicely........ except for the oil shooting out of the exhaust pipe. Looks like we're gonna need to do a little more work this winter. Keep your eyes open for an update on the pit bike in one of our 2011 issues. Hopefully we have it up and going by next spring. If you're curious about what we're doing before next spring rolls around, check out our Facebook account or www.gasolinemag.com. We'll have stuff going on over the winter to keep you entertained. Until then, keep it rural. Peace!

Winterizing Your Motorcycle
By Chad Hatzenbuhler
Even though right now it's still nice outside and you're able to ride your motorcycle without installing skis and tire chains, it's time to start thinking about winterizing your ride. We thought we could give you a few tips on storing your bike for the winter and making sure you are ready for next season.
1. Location: Where do you put your motorcycle? If you store your motorcycle in the garage over the winter as most of us probably do, keep a few simple things in mind. Make sure the bike isn't parked where sunlight can shine in the window and onto the bike. An entire winter of UV rays can add unnecessary age to your bike when it's easily avoided. A simple way to avoid this is to use a motorycle cover. It's best to use an actual purpose made cover. Other materials such as tarps or blankets may absorb and hold moisture against the bike. Fresh rust is the last thing you want to find when you pull the cover off in the spring. If you don't have a place of your own to store your motorcycle over the winter, check with your local dealership. Often times dealers will offer storage for your bike during the winter months.
2. Change The Oil Even if the oil is not due for a change, byproducts of combustion produce acids in the oil which can harm the inner metal surfaces. Warm the engine to it's normal operating temperature, as warm oil drains much faster and more completely. The hot oil will also do a much better job of burning your skin as it runs all over your arm. Throw some old Gasoline issues on the floor to avoid stains. The landlord will appreciate your tidiness. Don't skimp out, change the filter too. When you're done, pour the old oil down the sewer drain and toss the filter in the trash can. Just kidding! Be sure to take your used oil in to be disposed of and properly recycled. Most auto parts stores will take it. There's nothing like keeping the earth clean!
3. Add Fuel Stabilizer Today's crappy gas goes bad faster than you can imagine. If you plan on storing your bike for any period of time, it's always a good idea to dump in some fuel stabilzer before you park it. I wouldn't dream of parking any of my stuff over the
34
Fuel Your Veins. Gasoline
winter without it. Before you're ready to shut your rig off for the winter, dump in the recommended amount of stabilzer for the amount of fuel in the tank. This is usually figured out for you on the product label. After dumping it in, it's a good idea to start your bike up and ride it just a bit to make sure the stabilizer mixes and travels all the way to the carburetor(s). It's not a half bad idea to drain the bowls of the carbs after you park it. If there's no gas setting in there, it can't go bad and gum everything up, now can it?
4. Battery Storage It's always a good idea to disconnect the battery cables over the winter, at least the negative. In addition to being a simple matter of safety and security, who knows what sort of parasitic draw might be looming to drain your battery. Even without the parasitic draw, some batteries will have a tendency to go dead over the winter. Hanging a charger on them a couple times over the winter will ensure you don't have a dead bike in the spring. You can also buy small "float charger" that plugs into an outlet and can be left connected all winter. A float charger contains circuitry to prevent overcharging and will keep your battery fully charged all winter.
5. Surface Preparation If you care about your bike, clean it before you put it away for the winter. Laziness is the only reason you wouldn't. You don't want bugs and dirt and road grime eating away at your paint and parts all winter. Wash it, wax it, change it's diaper, floss, etc. Not only does a thorough cleaning make your bike look better, it's also an excellent way to notice other things that may need attention. Oil leaks, frame cracks, or any other sort of wear is more easily spotted when you're going over every part with a fine tooth comb to get it sparkling. Maybe you'll discover something that would qualify as a good "winter project." You can never have too many excuses to get out in the garage, right?
6. Exhaust and Mufflers Exhaust pipes/mufflers are known to rust fast when they are not used. Making sure they are properly stored for the winter on your bike will save them from an early rusty death. Spray a light oil (such as WD40) into the muffler ends and any drain holes. Lightly stick a plastic bag (Wal-Mart shopping bags are fine, but ones from the liquor store are more fun to acquire) into the end of each muffler hole to keep moisture from getting inside the exhaust. Then cover each muffler with another plastic bag to keep outside moisture off. This sounds and looks dumb, but it works. Continued to page 36
www.gasolinemag.com
35
Continued from page 35
7. Tires Check both front and rear tires with your air pressure gauge. Make sure each tire is properly inflated to the maximum recommended pressure. As it gets colder, air condenses in your tire so it is important to pump them up to keep your tires from going flat. Rubber is a flexible material and does not like to freeze (it cracks when it freezes). Placing 1/4"-1/2" of cardboard, a piece of wood, or non autographed copies of Gasoline Mag under each tire will help keep the rubber raised up from a freezing floor. If your tire has cords and belts showing from the burnout you did up against the workbench the last time your buddies brought over a case of beer, just let it freeze. It won't matter.
8. Service all fluids After the oil, if the brake or clutch fluids haven't been changed in the last two years or 1,000 miles, do it now.
9. Drink a beer and listen to a Dwight Yoakam song After you get your bike all winterized and covered up, drink a beer and listen to a few Dwight Yaokam songs. While this step is not totally necessary, it will momentarilly help to offset the sadness of not being able to ride your bike for the next 6 months.
