EDITOR’S NOTE

W

ith winter here and the holidays behind us, it’s a good time to make the most of the season. For some, embracing winter leads them to snowcapped mountains and ski slopes. Others head for a coastal getaway, seeking azure waters and sand under their feet. Many retreat to nearby Wine Country for serenity, inspiring surrounds and, of course, fine wine. In this issue, we draw inspiration from these seasonal longings. Fresh powder, slope access and all things ski related are center stage as we showcase ski properties in two of the hottest markets for primary and second home buyers (Feature, p.48). We also highlight our top picks for coastal properties up and down the coast of the San Francisco Bay Area, featuring legendary ranches with secluded beaches and chic homes with ocean views (Feature, p.58). In Wine Country, we catch up with renowned architecture firm, Backen & Gillam Architects, whose iconic designs define some of the most celebrated wineries and exclusive private estates in the Napa Valley and beyond (Creator, p.24). We also profile Shanghai-based contemporary artist Lu Xinjing, whose abstract, vibrant paintings are turning heads on the global art scene (Art, p.36). Closer to home, we look at one of Silicon Valley’s most desirable communities, discovering why it’s the perfect tech escape for discerning families (Focus, p.66), and speak with two top-producing agents about their recipe for real estate success; from a concierge lifestyle advisor in the Napa Valley (Agent Spotlight, p.32) to an analytical natural at the top of her game in Marin (Agent Spotlight, p.42). You’ll also find our showcase of the finest properties currently for sale in the Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliate network (Property Finder, p.72). Enjoy.

The directional line is essential. As you study his drawings, you see that his sketches articulate this axial relationship, and that the final building expresses the line in three dimensions. For the past twenty years, it is agricultural architecture—vernacular wooden buildings that stand alone as barns or in multiple as farm compounds—that formed core inspiration for Backen’s work. His firm has reinvigorated this design tradition blended with Backen’s brand of dynamic simplicity. Today, the firm has grown into a robust team, including principals Jim Gillam, John Taft, Luca Pignata, Silvia Nobili and Kirby Lee along with the firm’s 70 employees. Together, they bring a

This will define how the house should shelter, of course, but it should speak and communicate what is important to people, and remind them what’s important.” Looking ahead, Backen and wife Ann are working with a team on further developing their wellness lifestyle vision of the firm, one that fosters community through a sense of place, where structure, products and experiences are one. The Backen Lifestyle vision is already in motion at Maha Farm. The project was born from a dream, a love story really. A love story that goes beyond Ann and Howard and extends to a destination where all the senses come together in one place. Their ethos: A place where land is an inspiration and a foundation for something extraordinary. A place where people gather to learn, collaborate, and connect in a unique, soulful way. A place where luxury is whispered and experienced in a rustic, elegant way. A place where the highest levels of sustainability are incorporated to deliver a healthy eco-system for years to come. A place that serves as the heartbeat for the entire project, where residents and guests come together over a shared vision and feel nourished. G

Australian-born, top-producing agent in Napa Valley runs a boutique business specializing in luxury estates, vineyards and wineries. Hayson’s success is the product of her penchant for excellence, unyielding commitment and intimate connection to her clients’ needs, a reputation that has attracted high-end luxury buyers and sellers from around the world. Her recipe for success: always take the road less travelled and trust in the notion that less is more.

Real estate is about relationships and service–so is Hayson. Born in Sydney and raised in a large, tightlyknit family, Hayson grew up in a very social household. Her parents loved entertaining, consistently opening their doors to friends from around the world who would sometimes move in for extended periods. This socialization from a young age, combined with exposure to diverse, dynamic individuals introduced Hayson to a larger world. In her twenties she worked for Qantas Airways and spent seven years traveling the world, and then went on to become a television anchor in Sydney. Her

A

bstraction is a truly global language... a product of specific cultures, but it is not necessarily the cultural background of the artist themselves,” says Shanghaibased artist Lu Xinjian. One of China’s brightest talents on the contemporary art scene, Lu Xinjian’s abstract works are easily recognizable, harmonious, colorful and above all, original. His works are also widely collected, auctioned and have been exhibited in Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Beijing, Vancouver, Marbella, London, Shanghai and New York, to name a few. Add to the list numerous collaborations with top brands including Absolute Vodka, Beats by Dr. Dre and Adidas, and you have the Chinese contemporary artist to watch. But the road to international artist was a long one for Xinjian and not without struggle. Born in 1977 in a rural mountainous village and the son of a poor farmer, Xinjian’s choice to major in graphic design was purely economic.

38

After years of conservative Chinese education and steady exposure to to the freedom of the West, he finally saved enough money to enroll at the Interactive Media and Environment Department at the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen. It was here that he was heavily influenced by his mentor and founder of the institute, Petri Leijdekkers, who exposed Xinjian to the De Stijl movement and the works of Mondrian. “I gave him (Xinjian) the book De Stijl 1917-1931, by the Dutch historian H.L.C. Jaffe, which made a great impression. It legitimized the imagery for his own Confucian quest for harmony,” recalls Leijdekkers. The boy from the tiny village who witnessed China’s urban explosion suddenly had a vison for his work, creating an ar t form around the metropolises springing up across China. His debut into the art world was City DNA, a series of large abstract paintings solely composed of lines, crosses, ticks and symbols. With his success and subsequent travels around the world, his work evolved

into more complex and highly detailed abstractions of global cities. Today, his latest collection entitled Reflections, vibrantly showcases his signature use of lines, colors and shapes which collectively cohere into recognizable images composed of abstractions. Each work is aptly titled after its site location, ranging from ancient Chinese temples, to Italian cathedrals to modern day city skylines. In the following pages, we showcase selected works from Reflections and consider all that is reflected: the iconic locations themselves, the memories, sensations and feelings for each sense of place, and the idealism and dreams Xinjian had for a bigger, better life as a child, abstract as that may have been. Originally conceived as a ski town, Vail has matured into a vibrant, cultural, world class year-round destination with both full time and vacation home owners. The alpine destination has long attracted Californians–the state is one of Vail’s top feeder markets–and now, with direct flights from San Francisco International to Eagle-Vail Airport throughout winter, the ski community is one of our favorite towns for slopeside, ski-in/ski-out living. Andie Ohde is one of the top agents in the valley. Ohde and her new partner Susan Rollins have come together to form their new team known as Vail Real Estate Advisory Partners. The two have made a name for themselves as both realtors and Vail Real Estate Advisory Partners specializing in the luxury market. “2017 has proven to be active with steady market growth with signs the trend will continue into 2018,” says Ohde. goals this past year—they were the top

The team notes that the current market in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills is characterized by very low inventory, with the highest buyer demand for close to town locations. Existing residents are weighing concerns of a potential bubble and future implications of the new tax plan, faced with the decision of where to go next: downsize or relocate? Meanwhile, developers are snapping up distressed or older properties for redevelopment, making it very competitive to buy. Foreign buyers continue to invest in both communities according to Campi. Simultaneously, a robust tech sector, growing venture capital firms and the continued success of start ups, tech leaders like Google and Facebook, and established companies are fueling a piqued interest in Los Altos due to its central location and immediate proximity
