EDITOR’S NOTE

D

on’t be afraid to be a tastemaker. This call to authenticity was the resounding statement that kept floating top-of-mind from all the interviews that went into our Fall issue. It was delivered by Tom di Maria of Oakland-based Creative Growth, a nonprofit art studio founded in 1974 for artists with disabilities. The studio represents Dan Miller, the first artist with autism in the MOMA collection and the subject of our fascination in our art feature (p.42). With limited verbal abilities, Miller’s strikingly expressive body of work communicates a record of his life and obsessions. It also reminds us to look for art in unusual spaces, because creativity is all around us. This issue is an ode to creativity—in all its forms—and celebrates the tastemakers in us all. In our feature, Timeless Naturals, we profile the impeccable taste of Studio Collins Weir, a Sausalitobased full-service interior design studio whose process is rooted in empathy and listening to their clients’ needs and desires, often tuning in to what is not being directly expressed or articulated. We tour a selection of the studio’s work, from a private retreat in Sonoma to a sleek industrial residence in Mill Valley (p.36). In Wine Country, outward expression and the creative individual are center stage, so to speak, in our exclusive preview of this Fall’s Napa Valley Film Festival. We take you behind the red carpet and into The Patron Circle Experience—a glittering VIP opportunity to rub shoulders and share cheers with Tinsel Town’s brightest stars this year (Event Preview, p.32). Further from home, you’ll find out how creative and savvy investors in search of sand, sun and seclusion continue to flock to the Bahamas for its real estate opportunities and tax neutral environment in our feature, Easy Living (p.48). We also showcase the cutting-edge creators and thinkers celebrated this September at We The City, a month-long festival by the American Institute of Architecture (AIASF) and Center for Architecture + Design. The festival hosts over 30 programs through which architects, authors, designers, and the public connect through exclusive home tours, authors’ series, lectures, panels, and exhibitions featuring Bay Area artists (Event Preview, p.30). You’ll also see a gallery of the finest properties currently for sale in the Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliate network including: a legacy waterfront home on Fallen Leaf Lake, California; a sleek hedonist hideaway in Las Vegas, Nevada; and a seaside sanctuary compound in Osterville, Massachusetts (Property Finder, p.66). Enjoy, and be a tastemaker.

With projects ranging from California to New York, Studio Collins Weir creates modern spaces with timeless appeal. We catch up with its directors, a husband/wife team of Susan Collins and Chris Weir to learn about their studio’s full-service interior design and take you inside a selection of their work, from a private retreat in Sonoma to a sleek, industrial residence in Mill Valley.

S

tudio Collins Weir stole the show at this year’s installment of the San Fra n c i sco De co ra to r Showcase. It was our first introduction to the Sausalito-based design duo. The space—a massive, double-height living room flooded with light—was unlike every other room there. Instead of over-thetop opulence, endless embellishments and heavy doses of ego, Studio Collins Weir’s reinterpretation of a Le Petit Trianon inspired salon celebrated the space itself: the beauty of the interior architecture, craftsmanship, the brilliance of natural light and the room’s generous scale. Collins and Weir were approachable, refreshingly understated and they had it, that quality of design that comes off as effortless despite serious talent. Collins and Weir welcomed me a few months later to their Sausalito studio as we prepared for this feature. Their space is gleaming with natural light, sleek and instantly calming, as I would come to learn is representative of most of their studio’s work. Collins and Weir founded their interior design studio in 2015 with a clear ethos: modern design should be timeless and reflect every client’s own personality. Studio Collins Weir expertise lies in the marriage of interior design and architecture working together to create fully realized projects, each unique to it as own client. Their homes are a result of listening to and understanding each

38

client combined with a deep respect for the site and its architecture. “Empathy and listening are key to our process. An open and honest approach is critical to exceeding expectations and keeping every project on track,” says Weir. “Many times we need to listen to what is not being expressed or articulated directly by our clients in order to help them achieve their desired outcome.” In Mill Valley, Studio Collins Weir worked with client and architect Aidlin Darling Design to build a sense of history and

place into a ground-up custom residential project located in the Horse Hill area. To accomplish this, the studio blended custom furnishings with vintage and modern pieces alongside the client’s growing collection of emerging artists. “We enjoy working with collectors and clients with an interest in art,” notes Collins. Collins herself has a background in art and art history before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area from New York to study furniture design and architecture at CCA. “An art collection can speak volumes

about a client, their desires and how they define the spaces they live in. The Horse Hill project was a great example of this.”

Trunk Table designed by Carl Aubock and a hand-sourced woven rug from Morocco in the master bedroom.

At the Horse Hill residence, the material palette for the furnishings, flooring and window coverings reinforce the industrial nature of the home’s architecture. The studio created a number of original sitespecific pieces, including custom dining room table made from a Eucalyptus slab and the master bedroom’s bed and dresser. Original pieces are complemented by Flexform sofas, a 1950s Austrian Tree

Location and site also influence their work extensively. In Sonoma, the studio created a tranquil retreat for a very discerning and private client—imagine a sleek escape for a gentleman farmer. Inspired by the property’s orchards, gardens and foliage, the interiors for this weekend home designed by Feldman Architects are a sophisticated layering of textures and color-rich blues and greens

within a serene glass box. The captivating residence graces our cover this issue. “The surrounding forests and enveloping views were inspiring. The madrone trees were the stars,” reflects Weir. “We anchored the main entertaining space with two tables fabricated from blackened steel with tops carved from a single monumental slab of reclaimed Claro Walnut salvaged from a massive tree that used to stand in the center of downtown Vacaville.” The natural beauty and the surrounds of the San Francisco Bay Area are a constant influence for Weir, having grown up on the West Coast and settling in San Francisco while also studying at the CCA. “We are always looking outwards to connect our clients to the views and the landscape,” says Weir.

towards great design, always

In Colorado, the studio provided full design services for the interior remodel of a home just outside of Aspen. The mountain home is a careful balance of light modernism and material lightness. The palette is warm and inviting yet subtle enough to not interfere with the experience of the surrounding views.

and their ethos of timelessness. “We try to educate our clients on the value of quality, timeless pieces and guide them, no matter what their budget is,” says Weir. “It’s enabled us to collaborate on projects with a uniquely gifted group of local craftspeople and artists.” It takes one to know one.

“We wanted to bring scale to the spaces. The home, built on spec, was never fully completed. There was a great opportunity and we found pieces that had a connection to the land,” says Collins. The studio created custom designed pieces including a Douglas Fir desk for the office, a breakfast room banquette and table made of a Walnut slab and brass, and a Walnut dining room table.

For the studio, authenticity and originality reign supreme. “Authentic and original design is vital to our work. It drives us forward and underpins our collective advances, challenging us to reinvent the norms and push art and design forward,” says Collins. “This enables great design, always with a timeless appeal."

ook for art in unusual places because creativity is everywhere,” says Tom di Maria, Director of External Relations at Creative Growth, a nonprofit art studio founded in 1974 for artists with disabilities in downtown Oakland. “There’s a sense of excitement in terms of meeting an artist and engaging with their work.” Creative Growth and its extensive team lead by di Maria are leaders in the field of arts and disabilities, establishing a model for a creative atmosphere guided by the principle that all people gain fulfillment from the arts and are capable of producing work of great cultural merit. The studio is home to over 150 artists working in a variety of media. Facilitated by professional artists, Creative Growth provides non-directive artistic support, museum-quality materials, and space to explore painting, drawing, ceramics,

44

woodworking, fiber arts, printmaking, and digital media. “Coming to Creative Growth opened up an enormous new world to me in terms of what art was and who an artist can be. Walking into the studio, I felt like it was this fantastic aesthetic laboratory where you see people problem solve, communicate and experiment visually in a way that is so integral to who they are as human beings,” recalls di Maria. He found the work to be without ego and self-conscience efforts. “The depictions were immediately visceral, meaningful and aesthetically engaging which I found incredibly powerful. This is the essence of what every artist is trying to do. To connect with that part of them that wants to create. Creativity is this innate human experience and to see it in its purest form is a pretty powerful experience.” Dan Miller is one of Creative Growth’s star artists, a 20-year veteran of the studio art program whose exhibitions include solo shows in New York at Ricco|Maresca Gallery and White Columns and in Los Angeles at Diane

Rosenstein Gallery, as well as group exhibitions at the Berkeley Art Museum; The Museum of Everything, London; Partners and Spade, Andrew Edlin Gallery, New York; Gallery Paule Anglim, San Francisco; and ABCD, Paris, to name a few. Miller’s work is also part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Berkeley Art Museum, the Mad Musée, and the Collection de l’Art Brut, Lausanne. He’s also the first artist with autism in the MOMA’s collection. Miller has limited verbal capabilities. In spite of this, or perhaps because of it, he uses language as the basis for his drawings, which consist of dense, mostly illegible accretions of words, phrases, letters and numbers that serve as a record of the artist’s life and obsessions. Letters and words are repeatedly overdrawn, often creating ink layered masses, hovering on the page and built up to the point of obliteration or destruction of the ground. Each work contains the written recording of the Miller’s obsession with objects like light bulbs, electrical

ART sockets, food and the names of cities and people. Miller continues to work in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, ceramics, wood sculpture, printmaking, and other mixed media projects. “The power of Dan’s work is something that most artists strive for, in that the form and the content are intrinsically linked. The content are his words and the form are his words. The two things together are so powerful,” reflects di Maria. “It’s not like an artist with a great formal technique thinking ‘what should it be about?’ For Dan, it’s about only one thing, and that’s how it looks too. He’s really solved his communication challenge in a beautiful way.” The key to facilitating Dan’s work is e n c o u r a ge m e n t . St a f fe d by professional artists who support as mentors, Miller’s work has continued to evolve over time. “Encouragement and supporting creativity is key, a lot of times by deflecting. For someone like Dan, his work is all word and text based. Early on his words were clearly delineated. It looked in a way elementary. A fellow artist/mentor understands how to encourage him

to continue that train of thought: What happens if he continues? What happens after 5 – 10 years? When he is introduced to paint? What happens if the paper gets bigger, or the materials change?’ We just keep encouraging and encouraging and encouraging,” says di Maria. Encouraged he is. Miller has dedicated staff, including an assistant several days a week whose job is to lay out every possible material, mediums and paper that he might want to use. The goal is not to tell him what to do but to make sure he has access to everything and feels supported. “To be the first artist with autism in the MOMA collection is an amazing achievement. When you see someone like Dan communicate in a way that’s beyond anything that I can do, you see the richness of their experience and that opens the door into what he‘s seeing and what he’s feeling about the world,” says di Maria. “To become an artist who is a part of art history without having an understanding of art history is a pretty amazing achievement.”

Miller has something to say to the world. On the surface, the word-tangled artworks reflect an experience or memory he has. Digging deeper, di Maria thinks Miller is trying to tell us: “I have perceptions and understandings of the world but I might not be able to communicate it in the way you expect. Don’t discount me.” “Autism is primarily a communication syndrome. Art is a really satisfying way for Dan to detour around that obstacle. When you see the urgency with which Dan works, I think you see that because it’s so important to him. If I told you don’t speak again for the rest of your life, that’s an almost impossible request. I think that for Dan to have found a solution to that situation is part of the importance of his work,” says di Maria. Advocacy is the underlying mission of what Creative Growth does. Di Maria: “The intelligence is there, all the information is there, just in the wrong place. How can we open the door or the portal to have a more complete understanding of what it’s like to live inside an autistic brain and to deal with those frustrations? Miller is an amazing

problem solver. He’s also aesthetically talented and a very sophisticated artist from color combinations to palette.” Other artists, including David Byrne, Cindy Sherman and the late Kate Spade were some of the earliest collectors who responded to Miller’s work and other Creative Growth artists. What they see is the immediate connection between maker, and process and object. Miller doesn’t get stuck on commerciality and price point. “Our role is to represent the artist to the art world, in terms of their income and sales price. It separates the commercial market from the process of making the work that is refreshing in a way,” says di Maria. Miller’s works range from small typed pieces priced at $1,000 to larger paintings ranging from $10,000 to $15,000. A large work of Miller sold for

$45,000 recently at Art Basel Miami. Miller’s pricing follows the same way any contemporary artist would evolve: “As the work gets stronger, voice is clearer and as it moves into important collections and museums, the price reflects that. It’s not an invented price,” says di Maria. Di Maria recalls a funny encounter from a successful show. “A year ago he had a big show in New York. I came back and told Dan ‘your show went really well, people like your work, and so on.” He says: ‘coconut ice cream.’ I told him: ‘We don’t have any coconut ice cream’ and then he says ‘go get some!’ I’ve never heard him say that in his life. He understood that something good had happened and that his reward was going to be coconut ice cream - so go get some!”

Beyond a love of coconut ice cream, I ask di Maria what else we might not know about Miller: “Dan’s an amazing basketball player. He shoots free throws underhand and he doesn’t miss. He loves to eat and that’s rewarding for him. He’s also a bit of a ladies man.” If you come to Creative Growth there is no right or wrong. “It’s a great way to look at Miller’s work and the work of other artists and decide what you like and don’t like without the judgments of a gallery,” says di Maria. “Most importantly, don’t’ be afraid to be a tastemaker.” G To learn more about the works of Dan Miller and Creative Growth visit CreativeGrowth.org Tel: 510.836.2340 355 24th Street | Oakland, CA 94612

Sophisticated investors are drawn to real estate opportunities in The Bahamas not only for the country’s incomparable beauty, but also for its tax neutral environment and the lifestyle offered by owning a home in exclusive gated communities such as Lyford Cay, Old Fort Bay and Ocean Club Estates.

urquoise waters washing over sparkling sea glass and conch shells nestled on pink sand. Coconut palms swaying in a choreographed ballet to the tune of a balmy breeze. Meticulously maintained white sand beaches so soft you’d swear you were walking on baby powder. These are moments that define life in The Bahamas. Add to this list a tax neutral financial environment and the country’s easeof-access, and it’s not hard to see why The Bahamas has been attracting highnet-worth individuals to its shores for generations. “It’s not simply the crystal-clear water and year-round sun that is attractive to the world’s elite,” said George Damianos, Chief Executive Officer for Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty in Nassau. “It’s the fact that luxury homes and private islands in The Bahamas offer seclusion and security combined with the ability to stay closely connected to the world. Fort Lauderdale is only a 30-minute flight away.” According to an economic report released by the Central Bank of The Bahamas earlier this year, a record 6.6 million people visited The Bahamas in 2018, a 7.9% increase over the previous year, with the latest numbers

“ 50

showing arrivals rose by 17.8% as of May. This latest figure outpaces the 6.6% improvement recorded for the same time period last year. “2018 was a very strong year for the tourism segment in The Bahamas with the final three months of the year experiencing the highest quarterly growth in air arrivals to New Providence in the past 28 years,” said Lana Rademaker, Chief Brokerage Officer of Damianos Sotheby’s International Realty. “That record-setting pace has only continued to increase as we make our way through 2019.” Rademaker added that this continual influx of visitors into The Bahamas has a natural impact on the strength of the country’s real estate market. “The second- and third-home buyer market has created an entire market segment we didn’t have a few years ago,” she said. “Demand for residential opportunities at developments such as Baha Mar is steadily building with buyers seeking income-generating ‘vacation homes’ that offer a turn-key hotel experience that includes access to world-class dining and amenities.” “It boils down to economy of time,” added Damianos. “Savvy investors are constantly in search of real estate investments that aren’t going to be burdensome to own. There are three main demands we usually see from

wealthy buyers: First, is the ease of ownership. Affluent buyers want a home that is easy to take care of, easy to maintain and which offers easeof-access. Secondly, location is very important, including the amenities that the location offers such as golf, country clubs, restaurants and reliable security. Finally, privacy is often at the forefront of buyers’ minds.” Luxury gated communities on New Providence such as Lyford Cay, Old Fort Bay, Albany and Ocean Club Estates are prime examples of the type of communities that continually attract the most sophisticated buyers from all over the world. “With an increase in new direct flight routes from Canada, the U.S. and Europe, The Bahamas is extremely easy to get to, making it a top destination for investors,” said Rademaker. “Additionally, purchasing a home in one

of these communities offers our buyers the added benefit of being eligible for Economic Permanent Residency (EPR).” Economic Permanent Residency grants foreigners virtually the same rights as a native-born citizen, apart from voting rights. In The Bahamas, anyone who purchases a home valued in excess of $750,000 is eligible to apply for this status. “As an English-speaking country with an economy pegged to the U.S. dollar, and an ever-growing number of properties with luxury amenities, The Bahamas is a relatively seamless transition for investors,” said Rademaker. “Ease of access and close proximity to the U.S. also provide a level of convenience for our clients.” It’s not only New Providence that’s benefitting from this surge in direct

flight routes. Family Islands such as Spanish Wells in Eleuthera, mainland Eleuthera and the Abacos have also seen record numbers of visitors in the past year. “Our business used to be majority season based,” Rademaker said, referring to the more mild months of November through April. “However, as time goes on, we’re seeing fewer slowdowns in market activity. It’s been harder to differentiate between seasonal visitors and the constant flow of year-round arrivals.” After all, Rademaker added, when it comes down to it, it’s that authentic sense of peace and tranquility that keeps people returning to The Bahamas time and again, regardless of the time of year. “No matter where or when you visit in The Bahamas, the lifestyle we offer

N

ew construction in Marin County is rare, so when topproducing agent Thomas Henthorne’s c li e n t p u rc h a s e d a large, private lot in San Rafael’s Dominican neighborhood with approved plans to build, Henthorne jumped at the opportunity to help. From floorplan revisions to exterior changes to interior design, Henthorne brought his vision of a modern farmhouse to life, resulting in one of the most highly anticipated new-build homes to hit the market this year, 31 Gold Hill Grade. We catch up with Thomas to discuss all things design and how his vision is the ultimate value add to his clients. G: What attracted your client to purchase this vacant lot in the first place?

TH: The location is one of the best in San Rafael, in the Dominican neighborhood, which is known for its stately homes, period architecture, safety and tightly knit community. The lot itself is a oneacre parcel backing up to open space and is steps away from trailheads and hiking trails. You’re perched on a sunny south-facing plot with enveloping views of undulating hills and forest. It’s like living in a nature preserve minutes from downtown. It’s also incredibly private. G: You had a lot to do with the initial changes of the proposed home. Tell us about that. TH: New construction is so rare in Marin, so you want to make sure you do it right. The approved plans called for a completely different style home. I wanted to go in a different direction based off what I know buyers are looking for and what will sell in today’s market. We chose to go for a modern farmhouse

exterior and we revised some floorplan issues with the original plans. G: How far into deciding the details did you dive? TH: Ha, deep! I worked with the builders to pick all the interior and exterior finishes, I specified the light fixtures, flooring, plumbing fixtures, tile, counter tops, colors, etc. I also did all the landscape design and sourced all the plants. My background as a former landscape designer comes in very handy. G: So you were pretty hands-on? TH: Absolutely. I’m always deeply involved with all my listings and I think that value add is a major advantage to my services. My clients know it, buyers know it and now your readers know it. I’m grateful to be able to maximize a home’s value while also flexing my creative design side.

55

G: Describe the home’s space and flow. TH: It has a great open-concept floor plan which is how people like to live today. There are approximately 4,500 square feet with multiple family rooms, five bedrooms and four and one-half bathrooms. Expansive patios and terraces off the main living areas are ideal for entertaining. I’m all about creating outdoor living rooms. This home really has that quintessential California indoor/ outdoor living vibe. G: What’s unique about this home compared to other projects you’ve been involved in. TH: Well, for one, it has a 20-foot high ceiling in the main living room which is pretty much unheard of in Marin. It also has a media room located on the lower level which is an unexpected surprise – great for a family with kids. G: And the coolest part of the house? TH: It’s hard to choose just one. There’s quite a unique pool. It’s called a Modpool. It’s made from an actual shipping container and has a built-in hot tub. One of the sides has a glass window so you can see out into the yard while swimming. Kids love it! There are only about 250 of them in existence and it is one of the first Modpools in Marin. It’s a great alternative to the conventional in-ground pool. As a southerner, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the wrap around veranda which you don’t see very often in Marin. It adds a very special quality to the home and it’s one of my favorite outdoor spaces. A Modern Silicon Valley Retreat Los Altos Hills, California With soaring ceilings and open architecture under a canopy of oak trees, The Arroyo House is a soothing retreat from frenetic Silicon Valley, while being less than 5 minutes from Highway 280, 15 minutes from Apple and 30 minutes from SFO Airport. Designed by local architect Tobin Dougherty in 1991, this home is open, airy and earthquake resistant. The resulting design uses large beams as both design and supporting elements, piercing walls, crossing high in the air and creating dramatic angles and soaring ceilings. The dramatic walls of glass overlook the back yard under a canopy of oaks that soften the natural light, making it a wonderful place to be distracted by the surrounding natural beauty. The outside is even better than the inside. The grounds offer nearly complete privacy with walking paths, shady vistas of oak trees and the arroyo. Nature lovers will enjoy seeing deer passing through the arroyo, and the abundance of songbirds provide nature’s soundtrack. Learn more at: 11564ArroyoOaks.com.

Magnificent and private yet sunlit with panoramic views, the home’s architectural shapes curve up over the surrounding woods with glimpses of San Francisco Bay and views of the impressive mountain ridges for which it is named. No expense was spared and no detail overlooked in the design and construction, from the finest materials to construction details like the bookmarked backsplash in the kitchen or the denim sound insulation of the media room.
