pring is always an abundant time of change and growth, and each year the global design community is on trend with this transition, debuting its latest, freshest looks that will define the year ahead. We’ve packed the pages ahead with a menagerie of aesthetics, from classic to modern to downright whimsical. The result is a feast for the eyes and an inspiring journey through the current state of all things design-driven. Welcome to our annual Design Issue. We start in Milan, Italy at Salone del Mobile, the world’s largest design fair. The annual exhibition gathers some 400,000 visitors and thousands of designers. It’s all things Italian for our top picks this year, including sleek furniture, ornate installations and heritage craftsmanship (Inside Salone del Mobile, p.34). Closer to home, we take you inside the 42nd edition of the San Francisco Decorator Showcase, an extravagant revitalization of a stately 18,000+ square foot Presidio Heights mansion originally modeled after Le Petit Trianon on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles, Marie Antoinette’s escape from the formality of court life and the burden of her royal responsibilities. In due form, a host of 40 designers and studios transformed the space, pushing it towards further opulence, each flexing their talents in an attempt to steal the show (Decorator Showcase, p.40).
