WELCOME

WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE I HOPE YOU’RE HAVING A GREAT, restful summer. In our last issue of Gateway Life, I wrote an article called “Four Tanks” about the areas of our lives we ought to keep replenished. That’s exactly what I’ve done this summer. The elders graciously gave Debbie and me a sabbatical so we could rest, have fun, and get alone with God to pray and hear from Him. We spent time at the lake with our friends and family

gateway life gatewaylifemag.com David Smith and Thomas Miller, Senior Pastoral Oversight Lawrence Swicegood, Editor-in-Chief project management Tracey Schwellinger

and even taught the grandkids how to water ski. We also took the whole family to the beach and spent some time in the sun and sand. We made memories for years to come, and I was again reminded of the importance of keeping my four tanks filled. If you’re like me, life tends to get a little busier this time of year. The kids head back to school (as parents breathe a sigh of relief ), and the restful summer season gives way to a busy fall. Here at Gateway, we begin to focus our attention on our annual outreach series by inviting our family, friends, and coworkers to hear engaging messages about having a personal relationship

with Jesus. But before that, I’ll preach a three-week series that answers the question, “Why am I here?” Then our four-week outreach series, “How will I Know?”, kicks off with a funny and inspiring message from Michael Jr. It’s the perfect opportunity to invite people to church who wouldn’t normally come. I’m excited about this issue of Gateway Life. You’ll love the inspirational story about how God has used Todd Lollar’s cerebral palsy to reach thousands for Christ (page 14). You’ll also get a sneak preview of Michael Jr.’s humor in his feature on being “oversaved” (page 18). And did you know we offer basic first-aid classes and have therapy dogs to help people dealing with grief? If you’ve ever asked yourself what Gateway has to offer, we’ve got the answer in our article “We Have That?!” (page 12). Even though fall is almost here, it’s not too late to get some rest and make memories with your family. In fact, I hope you’ll find some time to sit down and relax as you read this magazine. My heart is for us not to get wrapped up in all the busyness, but for us, as a Gateway family, to come sit at Jesus’ feet and find rest

It all started at a café. I was late to church, I couldn’t find a parking spot, and the North Fort Worth Campus Auditorium was full, which hasn’t happened in a while. My sister-in-law and I decided to stop by the café to get some coffee and breakfast while we watched the sermon from the overflow room. I was in shock when my healthy husband died at age 50. Everything changed in an instant, and I had no idea how I could find the strength to comfort our four children, hurting family members, and the many employees who had worked for him. Gateway Church and its ministry to widows [Flourish] guided me through each step of this year with constant encouragement. One of the hardest changes in my life was going to church without my husband. This was such a huge change of identity for me. But now, I have other women to meet me at church, and I never have to sit alone.”

PROUDEST MOMENT? My proudest moments have been seeing my children excel. Watching James broadcasting sports, seeing Andrew and Lora loving their first year of marriage, hearing Karis sing with all her heart, and reading Rachel’s written masterpieces thrills my heart beyond words. Six conversations to prepare your children for a new school year

10  AUGUST 2015

P

arents, have you had a chance to catch your breath? Summer is flying by. It’s hard to know anymore if summertime is actually a break for either kids or parents. While balancing your own work schedule, kids have play dates, sports camps, and jobs … oh my! And just as you begin to settle into that summer routine … BOOM … the school year starts again with a vengeance. That’s when you begin looking at the upcoming school year to see how you can prepare your kids for the lions, and tigers, and bears! I recall being nervous before every new school year. Walking into the school the first day represented starting a new chapter. I instinctively knew it, though I wouldn’t have known to call it that. What I knew was that it represented change. Whether your child is going back to the same school or starting a new one, the new school year means change— new classes, new teachers, and new challenges. Some school years represent even greater challenges because your child’s new grade might mean going to a whole new school. While some people are more adaptable, change is nevertheless unsettling for everyone. Your home and your family, no matter how small or large, represent a place of security and stability for your child. He or she can work through changes much more easily if they can process their feelings with you. Parents remember: our first priority is to point our kids to Christ. He is the ultimate place of stability for their lives. But, before the school year begins, we can start talking with our kids and help them prepare for this upcoming change. Here are some statements we can give our children that can lead to great conversations: BE CONFIDENT IN YOURSELF.

Depending on their maturity, they may or may not understand what it means to be a child of God, or what it means to get our identity from Him. But, you can instill the greatest stabilizing earthly message in their hearts by assuring them they have all it takes to succeed and that God will be faithful to complete His good work in them (Philippians 1:6). BE AT PEACE, YOU ARE NEVER ALONE.

Helping our children understand that God is with them in their new environment is important. He will give them peace and comfort if they will ask him for it. He is a good friend and will never turn his back on them (Hebrews 13:5).

BE KIND TO OTHERS.

I’m convinced that nothing wins people over more than kindness. The Bible even says that it’s God’s kindness that leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4). If it works for God, then it works for me! I pray over my kids that they will be kind to others and that they will have favor with teachers and students. BE JOYFUL IN ALL THINGS.

It’s all about attitude. If we can get this one right, then we will be way ahead of the game. Having a joyful attitude should be the leading attitude for believers. It’s a fruit of the Spirit after all (Galatians 5:22)! This statement isn’t meant to ignore the realities of pain and suffering. But if you lead with a conversation about joy, then it will keep that fruit on the forefront of their minds. BE STRONG IN WHAT YOU BELIEVE.

A great conversation around this is based on Matthew 7:24-27, which talks about two builders: one who builds his house on the rock, and one who builds his on the sand. In both scenarios, the rain descended, the floods came, and winds blew and beat on the houses. But only the house built on a firm foundation will stand. We are teaching our children to make firm the foundations of what they believe, so they can weather the storms of life. BE A LEADER.

Please hear me, this is regardless of personality type. Your child can be a leader. Not everyone is naturally gifted or even inclined to lead people, but that doesn’t mean you get a pass from being a good influence on the people around you. You can lead by example in the way you conduct your life, the decisions you make, and the people you choose to follow. Be excited for this new chapter in your children’s lives. Conversations like these will provide a healthy environment in which your kids will grow and thrive! GL For more information on parenting resources at Gateway, visit familylife.gatewaypeople.com.

10 Things You May Not Know We Have at Gateway by Katie Smith

W

ITH A CHURCH AS DIVERSE AS GATEWAY, we’re able to offer a wide variety of ministries and opportunities for people experiencing different seasons of life. In fact, here’s a list of 10 things you may not know we have. Whether you want to serve or receive ministry, chances are we have something for you.

HEARTPRINTS THERAPY DOGS care.gatewaypeople.com Studies show that petting a friendly dog significantly reduces anxiety and stress, affecting morale and healing. So starting this fall, you might see some furry friends visiting Relational Care ministries like Kids in Grief and Reveille. “My golden

12  AUGUST 2015

retriever Mollie and I have been a registered therapy team for nearly two years,” says Steve Melson, associate pastor of Relational Care. “Our deepest desire is to serve within the church.” And they’re not the only ones.

REVEILLE care.gatewaypeople.com According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, Texas has one of the highest veteran populations in the country. This fall, we’re launching a care group for (and led by) military veterans that provides a safe place for understanding, support, and healing. Reveille will serve local men and women vets and their families.

KIDS IN GRIEF

care.gatewaypeople.com The fourth most common prayer request from our Amazing Kids ministry concerns the death of someone significant. Most kids don’t know how to process grief. To fit this unique need, Relational Care and Amazing Kids are partnering with Counseling Works to launch a program this fall for children and teens (ages 5–18) who have lost a loved one. In this program, kids and teens will learn to express feelings of grief in a safe and loving environment through sharing, playtime, drama, art, and the support of caring and trained facilitators.

SAFETY SERVICES

serve.gatewaypeople.com The Safety Services Volunteer Ministry (SSVM) is a newly launched volunteer team that provides security and basic first aid for Gateway services and events. The SSVM consists of certified Level II noncommissioned security officers and active, off-duty police officers who currently serve in federal, state, or local law enforcement agencies. Our Level II security officers are unarmed and wear our Gateway Security uniform shirt. To join the team, email safetyservices@gatewaypeople.com.

THE SCHOOL OF TECH ARTS sota.gatewaypeople.com

What began as an effort to bring professional training to the Gateway Tech Arts (TA) staff and volunteers has become a unique college-level program for students desiring a career or professional skills in live audio, video, and stage lighting. Registration is open now for several introductory and advanced courses for the fall semester!

ALPHA

alpha.gatewaypeople.com Alpha is a 10-week course designed for anyone 18 years and older to explore the basics of faith and Christianity. Each week, attendees gather to share an informal meal, listen to a talk on an important question, and have small group discussions. In Alpha, no questions or comments are off limits. It’s a message applicable to everyone, which is why over 26 million men and women worldwide have attended an Alpha course.

CAREER MINISTRY SEMINAR

generouslife.gatewaypeople.com Generous Life (Gateway Financial Stewardship) has a powerful two-day ministry seminar available for people who have been laid off or fired or are unsatisfied with their current employment. During the interactive course, we cover topics such as job transition, career acceleration, high-quality resume writing, the art of interviewing, and more. The next seminar is on Saturday, August 22 & 29.

FLOURISH

flourish.gatewaypeople.com Flourish is our ministry for widows of any age. Statistically, widows lose 75% of their friendship network, 50% of widows leave their church, and most widows experience financial decline. Flourish desires to provide widows with practical resources, encouragement, and fellowship through pastoral care ministry, monthly group meetings, grief support, mentoring, and social events.

STAGEDOOR CLASSES

performingarts.gatewaypeople.com This past year, more than 200 people auditioned for Gateway’s Christmas production, Truthical, and our Performing Arts ministry quickly realized there are many people who want to use their talents and have a passion to perform. StageDoor offers six-week courses in acting, singing, scriptwriting, or dance. This fall, we’re also excited to offer creative classes for drawing, iPhone photography and filming, graphic design, songwriting, and more! There is a $25 fee for each course. Registration for the fall session begins mid-August.

WORSHIP TEAM ACADEMY

worship.gatewaypeople.com Worship Team Academy is an exciting video-based curriculum used at Gateway to train up-and-coming musicians in worship theology and musical craft. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert on bass guitar, drums, piano, guitar, or vocals, the academy has a class for you. The heart behind the Worship Team Academy is to easily equip any church or individual. For more information on the upcoming fall semester, email worshipteamacademy@gatewaypeople.com. GL

Todd Lollar discovered his biggest weakness is his biggest strength by Daniel Hopkins

ase Robertson sat backstage in the green room during this year’s Men’s Summit and had one question: Where’s Todd Lollar? Nobody in the green room knew who the Duck Dynasty star was talking about, and in fact, Jase had never met him before—he had only heard about him.

14  AUGUST 2015

That’s because Todd’s story has traveled quickly despite his disability. Todd has cerebral palsy, which means he uses a wheelchair and has a speech impediment that significantly slows his communication. However, he views these setbacks as blessings.

“I FOUND MYSELF VERY OPEN TO CHANGE, REVELATION, AND When you meet Todd, you’ll notice TRANSFORMATION, BECAUSE two things: 1. He has impeccable style. So, all through after several phone calls, Todd rolled his formative years, Todd never knew in along with his 8-months pregnant about the deal she had made with God,

even though there were hidden clues all around him. Shrouded in the mistreatment he received from other kids and the insecurity and loneliness he experienced, were glimpses of Todd’s natural gifts. At a young age, he connected with people and drew them together. Even as early as sixth grade, his classmates voted him “most inspirational,” and in college, at the University of Oklahoma, he was one of the most influential people in his fraternity. It was during college that Todd had an encounter with God and gave his life to the Lord, and shortly after he graduated, he felt called to full-time ministry. When he told his mother, she broke down and told him about the prayer she prayed the day he was born. Suddenly, Todd’s past began to make sense, but what was about to happen on a mission trip to St. Louis,

Todd was totally out of his comfort zone. “I was in a humbling position without the accessibility I was used to,” he says. “I found myself very open to change, revelation, and transformation, because my weaknesses were more apparent than at any other time in my life.” He visited a McDonald’s one morning for devotional time, and when he read 2 Corinthians 12:9, he says it was like God dropped a bomb on him: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My

power is displayed in your weaknesses.” Until that moment, he considered his cerebral palsy an obstacle, but he realized it was a way for God to display His strength. “My prayer for so much of my life was for God to heal me, and He answered my prayer that day, but His answer was far better than what I asked for,” says Todd. “For the first time in my life, I realized that I’m strong instead of weak.”

TIM CRUZ, PATRICK SMITH, AND JOSH FEWELL’S

SONG STORY

“TRUST IN YOU” by DANIEL HOPKINS

WHEN PASTOR TIM CRUZ WAS 15 YEARS OLD, his dad gave him a new perspective on a story he’d heard his entire life. It was the story of Peter walking on the water when he saw Jesus in the distance. Tim, who serves as associate pastor of Amazing Kids worship, had always believed that it was Peter’s lack of faith that caused him to sink. His dad said that was true, but he asked Tim a question: “Did any of the other disciples get out of the boat and try to walk toward Jesus?” He was the only one who had enough faith to step off the boat onto the water. This revelation has stayed with Tim for years, and 18 months ago, when he got the idea for “Trust In You,” he finally found a way to express the heart of what his father told him so many years ago. “When my wife and I moved here from California in 2011, it was a rough move,” says Tim. “We really had to trust in God, and it’s been a theme in our marriage.” Tim would sing during his personal devotional times about trusting God. As a chorus began to take shape, he began incorporating it into Amazing Kids worship times, encouraging the kids that no matter what they’re going through, they can put their trust in God. The chorus really resonated with the kids, and that’s when Tim decided to finish the song. The first person he contacted was Patrick Smith, who lent his production knowledge, songwriting ideas, and voice to the song. More importantly, Patrick quickly connected to the song’s heart and was able to help Tim express his idea. “I wanted to

take the story of Peter and look at it from his perspective,” says Patrick. The two continued to collaborate on the song even when Patrick travelled to England for two weeks with The King’s University. After he returned, they were happy with the song until they played it for Pastor Joshua Fewell, who was bluntly honest. “He thought the melody of the chorus could be stronger,” says Tim. Joshua suggested a new melody that floored Tim, and just like that the song was complete. Though Tim is a children’s worship pastor, “Trust In You” doesn’t just offer encouragement to kids—it’s for anyone who needs just a little more faith to get through a struggle. The second verse says it well: “When I feel I’m sinking, when the water’s rising / No Turning Back / When the wind grows stronger, I’ll keep pushing forward / No turning back.” “If you’re in a storm, God is still faithful and His voice is still calling out to you,” says Patrick. “Even if you feel like there’s no hope, He’s still there. That’s what this song is about.” “Trust In You” is available on The Blessed Life: Songs from Gateway Devotions, at the Gateway Bookstore and iTunes.

Are You Oversaved? by Michael Jr.

Have you ever met someone who was oversaved? You know who I’m talking about—someone who makes the apostle Paul seem like a lightweight. Someone who can take a conversation about hamburgers and turn it into a 5-point sermon on end times. Someone who makes the disciples look like a bunch of dudes who need a little more discipline. If you don’t know who I’m talking about, chances are you might just be that person! But if you’re still not sure, check the next page to see if any of it sounds familiar.

Michael Jr. will be at Gateway during weekend services on August 22–23 Check out his new video series Michael Jr.’s BreakTime on youtube.com.

YOU KNOW YOU’RE OVERSAVED IF … Your hero isn’t Superman—

it’s the communion usher at church. You’ve successfully used this Christian pickup line:

“Is it hot in here or is that just your love for God burning inside of you?”

You rebuke your vacuum cleaner

because it’s a Dirt Devil.

You changed your birthday on Facebook to the day you got saved.

You

SIDE HUG your spouse.

You only believe in two food groups—

You do rapture drills at home.

communion bread and juice.

(Thanks Pastor Jimmy. #TippingPoint)

A BREASTPLATSENESS. OF RIGHTEOU

Instead of using Roundup,

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 Since that time, Todd has earned his masters in biblical and related studies from Abilene Christian University and has immersed himself in using his story to reach people with the gospel. Now he’s writing a book (Weak Is the New Strong) about his life’s calling and continues to disciple and mentor young professionals through his ministry organization, the Navigators. One of his primary goals is to allow people to change the way they think about their weaknesses. He wants people to see them as opportunities for God to use them. “Don’t let your weakness keep you from achieving all God created you to be,” he says. “Allow God to take your greatest weakness and transform it into your greatest strength.” GL For more information about Todd, his family, and his ministry, visit toddlollar.com.

PROFILE

MY BROTHERS ARE TWINS and are less than a year older than me. My parents would get asked all the time if we were triplets. My dad would joke and say, “One of them is!” We’re all really close and get together as often as we can to play tennis or golf. I GREW UP IN GREENVILLE, TEXAS. Even though it was a small town, I didn’t consider myself a country boy. However, I hung around with farmers and hauled hay to make money. But it was only temporary. I never wanted to become a farmer because you can’t control the weather. I wanted something I had a little more control over.

STEVE DULIN STEVE DULIN IS AN ASSOCIATE SENIOR PASTOR AND FOUNDING ELDER AT GATEWAY. HE IS MARRIED TO MELODY, AND THEY HAVE TWO DAUGHTERS, KASSIE AND KRISTIN, AND A SON-INLAW, GABE.

I RECENTLY BECAME A GRANDFATHER. It’s one of the greatest things ever. People tell you you’re going to love being a grandparent, but when you actually see the baby for the first time, it’s amazing! Now that I’m older, I realize how important it is to slow down and enjoy my granddaughter. When you’re young and first have children, I’m not sure you appreciate what’s really happening. But when you have a grandchild, it’s totally different. MY WIFE, MELODY, and I have been married for 34 years. We met in college. I was at Rice University and she was at UT Health School of Nursing. My roommate was dating her roommate, and she and I got married right out of college. Her parents were Christians and I was not raised in a Christian home, so she did some “missionary dating.” Now that we have two daughters, we no longer believe in missionary dating! (Laughs) I WAS IN MORE THAN A HUNDRED FISTFIGHTS and 13 car wrecks by the time I got saved. I was wild and out of control. When my fraternity would throw parties, I was the bouncer. When I became a Christian, I went all in. Something dramatically changed in me immediately. I quit fighting and drinking; instead, I read the Bible and believed it. My wife will tell you I’ve changed more than any person she’s ever met. I started a new life!

28  AUGUST 2015

I WAS AN ENTREPRENEUR GROWING UP. I had my own paper route, lawn company, fence company, and hay hauling business. So when I went to college, I majored in economics, political science, and business management. Those are the kinds of majors you get when you want to go into politics or banking, but I didn’t want to wear a suit every day so I thought, I’ll do construction. IN 1990, I STARTED MY OWN CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, Milestone Construction, Inc. In the 20 years I owned it, we never missed a deadline, always made full profit, and never had a reportable accident on a job. That’s unheard of in the construction industry, but I attribute it to running my business according to the Bible. Since the beginning, I applied the principles of the Bible to the way I did business. In 2010, I sold the company to go into ministry full-time with Masterplan Business Ministries, which teaches other business owners how to do business God’s way. I’ve heard so many success stories because God’s way works. Then two years ago, I joined Gateway’s staff as an associate senior pastor, and I now oversee our Habitation services and Gateway Business Leaders. THERE’S A RUMOR GOING AROUND that I’m not the best driver. It might be true. In 25 years of being friends with Pastor Robert, I’ve driven one time. If we’re in his car, he drives. And if we’re in my car—he drives. Thankfully, I haven’t had any wrecks in a long time. For more about our Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.
