season, God’s presence will be with you and your family. Christmas is approaching and my children are growing more and more excited about the presents they will receive. I can remember that type of anticipation. I would barely be able to sleep on Christmas Eve knowing that the time of joy was very near. Watching my kids certainly gives me joy, but it also reminds me what a great

feeling joy is, and that I rarely experience it now as an adult. This season of Advent is a time of expectancy in which we count the days until Jesus’ birth as a way of celebrating and remembering that He came to this earth as a child. However, we also do it to remember that He will come again. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to wait for the Messiah to come to the earth. I wonder if the anticipation dwindled as time stretched out. I wonder if doubt crept in as they waited and waited. Christmas being just days from now, I wonder what Mary was thinking as the day of Christ’s birth was approaching. How

much anticipation did she feel just to be able to see His face? As I reflect on this time of Advent this is what stirs in me. I know Christ, but I long to see His face! When I hear Him speak to me or when He begins to move and do a work inside of me, I can’t help but be giddy like a child. That’s one of the reasons I’m looking forward to this season at Gateway. We’ll all be celebrating Advent together through our myGateway App, and you’ll want to read Pastor Chad Sykes’ article that explains what Advent is all about (page 10). We also have an article about our new Dallas Campus (page 18), a list to help parents make the most out of this holiday season (page 12), and an article about how you and your family can kick off 2016 at Gateway (page 14). So this Christmas, let’s set our eyes on Him with childlike anticipation for what He wants to do in each and every one of us. Take joy in the fact that He is coming again!

“LAST WEEK, one of my Men’s Promise

Principle Group members called me to tell me he wasn’t going to be able to make it to the group that week. He explained that he was going to be out of town on a hunting trip and then asked if it would be okay to call in. So before our group started, I called him and put him on speakerphone, and he took part of our talk on Ephesians 5. We talked for an hour while he listened in. Afterward, he sent me a picture of him following along on his iPad from the tree stand. I’ve been leading groups for

Gateway Students actually helps pack a few thousand meals at the North Fort Worth Campus on a monthly basis. After the service, they head on over to a classroom set up for them to do an assembly-line operation, putting meals in plastic bags. Recently, one of the students packing food as part of the outreach went up to Kim and said, ‘Thank you for doing this!’ Kim responded, ‘Why?’ And the student said, ‘I was one of those kids who went home hungry on the weekend.’” Pastor Kam Hunt | via Email

A YEAR OF GIVING

Gateway began the year with a focus on The Blessed Life and generous living, and we’ve seen God do many miraculous things throughout the year! First-time tithers saw God’s blessings and others learned biblical and practical steps to help them get out of debt, manage money, and save for the future. Throughout the year, many people experienced God’s love through gifts and service from the Gateway family. And the year of giving isn’t over! Whether it’s a gift card, a car, or one day of your time, you have the opportunity to change the lives of those around you this Christmas. Here are a few of the giving opportunities available right here at Gateway. GL

GIFT CARDS FOR SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES CAR DONATIONS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES END-OF-YEAR GIVING 8  DECEMBER 2015

To receive tax credit from the IRS, all 2015 contributions must be received or postmarked by Thursday, December 31. You can also drop them at our Ministry Headquarters or any of our campuses by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, December 30. For more information, contact the Revenue Team at 817.328.1000 or email contributions@gatewaypeople.com.

EVERY YEAR DURING THE HOLIDAYS, many single parents are unable to give their children Christmas gifts. Through your generosity, we are able to bless Gateway’s single parent families during the holidays. You can give a special offering designated to the Single Parent Families Ministry or donate Walmart, Target, or other major retail store gift cards. Please place cash donations and gift cards in a clearly marked envelope or give online at egiving.gatewaypeople.com.

Last year, we helped parents give their children Christmas gifts. Each parent was given a gift card for each child (birth– 18 years old), and a total of children were blessed!

FOR MANY PEOPLE, a car symbolizes opportunity: the opportunity to make money, be independent, pursue recreational activities, and provide for their family’s needs. Over the past 12 years, Gateway’s Stewardship Ministry has provided reliable cars, trucks, and vans to families in need. And there are still many more families at Gateway who need a dependable vehicle but aren’t in a financial position to purchase one. You can make a difference to a family this Christmas by donating your used car. For more information or to donate, email vehicle@gatewaypeople.com.

AS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, mostly first-time visitors, flood through Gateway’s doors this Christmas season, we need caring and cheerful volunteers at all campuses to be ushers, greeters, parking lot attendees, Guest Central hosts, Fresh Start volunteers, and Welcome Center hosts. A smile and a helping hand can be a valuable gift to someone this Christmas. For more information, visit gxp.gatewaypeople.com.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GIVE to Gateway’s Heart for the Kingdom initiative or any other ministry at Gateway before December 31, place your offering in a clearly marked envelope in any offering container located in the back of the Auditorium, or give online at egiving.gatewaypeople.com.

This year, Gateway has given away vehicles to families in need.

Last year, and more than more than people attended people attended Gateway’s Christmas our Family Candlelight production, Christmas services.

Because of your Heart for the Kingdom giving last year, we were able to begin completely renovating the Grand Prairie Campus, add more than parking spaces to the Southlake Campus, and purchase the building for our new Dallas Campus. GATEWAYPEOPLE.COM  9

I

experienced a true miracle just a few days ago. An online retailer I shop through released an app that allows you to receive your order in less than one hour of placing it. I purchased some items and within an hour, the delivery arrived. In the midst of my rejoicing at this leap forward in online shopping, I realized that I was saving around 20 or so hours from my previous method of ordering. That’s when I realized that I might have a problem with waiting. This was not a new revelation to me. I’ve never been good at waiting, and truthfully I’m an impatient person. I’ve been this way since I was a child, and waiting is one of the hardest things for me. Now as a dad of three little ones with a fourth on the way, I can confidently tell you there are ample

opportunities to work on this area of my character. I think this is the case for most of us. Certainly, there are the few saints among us who have everlasting patience, but for many of us, our perfect world is one that gives us our needs and wants instantly. Drive-throughs, credit cards, and one-hour delivery all hold within them the promise of instant gratification. Sometimes I wonder if our “instant” society is shielding us from the reality that in our relationship with God, there will be seasons of waiting. These seasons of waiting can be challenging, but what if I told you there is a season of the year that could be an intentional reminder that God will satisfy our longing and waiting? We’ve just entered into this season, which is known as Advent. You may have grown up celebrating Advent with your family, and this is especially true if you come from a tradition that observes the historical church calendar. Those of us raised in other church traditions may not have heard of Advent. No one is quite sure when the church began celebrating this season, but what is certain is that it was a fixture on the calendar from very early on in church history. I’ve found that participating in Advent is a life-giving spiritual

It’s ironic that the term “hustle and bustle” is often used to describe the pace of the Advent season.

discipline that connects me to God and His story of redemption through Christ— throughout history and in my own life. Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “arrival.” It begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and prepares our hearts and minds for Christmas. There are three main focuses during Advent. First, we contemplate the depth of longing that creation experienced as it waited for the Messiah to come. Next, it causes us to stand in awe at the reality of God taking on human flesh and dwelling among us. Lastly, it helps us cultivate the longing we have for His second coming when death will be swallowed up in victory and all of creation is renewed. Advent is a time to slow down and wait. It is a time of preparation that reminds us of what we’re waiting for. Just as Israel’s wait for their Messiah ended over 2,000 years ago, our wait for the return of our glorious king will end as well. So, how can we intentionally engage in Advent this year? The first thing is simple, but at the same time extremely difficult: Slow down! It’s ironic that the term “hustle and bustle” is often used to describe the pace of the Advent season. We miss an opportunity for spiritual growth when we can only devote one or two days to focusing on Advent’s significance—because of Christmas, Easter was possible. The second way to observe Advent is to start a tradition of celebrating it with friends and family. Some people

BE GENEROUS

Be purposeful about making lasting memories with your family. Don’t just wait around for them to happen. Instead, have a plan in place to make sure your family feels loved and gets into the Christmas spirit.

The Christmas season is a great time to bless others. Our Outreach section (page 8) has a number of ways for you and your family to give generously to those in need. Getting your children involved in giving helps create a legacy of generosity for generations to come.

BE MAKE SPONTANEOUS TRADITIONS Oftentimes, great memories take place during unexpected moments, like when you suddenly discover a Christmas special playing on television. Take advantage of moments like these to gather the family together, pop some popcorn, and watch Rudolph, the RedNosed Reindeer, It’s a Wonderful Life, or any of the myriad Christmas movies that air in December.

A Christmas tradition can be a family walk around the neighborhood to look at Christmas lights, a special meal together, or a game night. It can be anything you want. This year could be the start of a new tradition for your family!

5

JUST SAY NO During this busy season, there are parties and events with family and friends. Keeping the holidays enjoyable and peaceful for your family might mean saying “no” to a few extra activities.

FOR MANY OF US, Christmastime is full of wonderful memories, sights, sounds, and smells. The joy of Christmas is something we want to enjoy with our families, but if we’re not careful, the busyness and stress of the holidays can overwhelm us and overshadow

our family time. Carefully managing your holiday plans and schedules can prevent holiday stress from happening to you. That’s why Gateway Life has put together this list of ways to make the most out of “the most wonderful time of the year.” GL

TIME WITH THE KIDS

FAMILY NIGHT OUT

CHRISTMAS MIX

BE JOYFUL!

Spending one-on-one time with each of your kids doing Christmasrelated activities is a great way to bond with your children during the holidays. Whether it’s going out to do something special or staying in and reading Christmas books, take some time to engage with your kids over the holidays.

Spend time together as a family during Gateway’s production of Truthical, a Christmas musical for all ages (Dec. 10–13), and at our Family Candlelight Services (Dec. 19–20).

Make your house look like Christmas inside and out. Be first in line when the Christmas tree lot opens for the year, and as Clark Griswold might tell you, make sure the Christmas light bulbs work before you’re up on the roof.

For more information on Gateway holiday activities, visit gatewaychristmas.com.

Are the Christmas candles lit, and is the Christmas music playing at your house? These two small ingredients can get just about anyone into the Christmas spirit. Make a Christmas mix of all your favorite songs and keep it on when you’re doing things around the house. And if someone complains about the Christmas music, look them squarely in the eyes and say, “Bah Humbug!”

Don’t let the busy schedules, gift deadlines, and holiday stress turn you into a scrooge. Following the aforementioned tips will certainly help, but the best way to be joyful during the holidays is to remember that Christmas is all about celebrating the birth of our Savior.

SONG STORY

MARK AND MATTHEW HARRIS’S

“Love Has Found Us” by KATIE SMITH

wouldn’t have considered himself a musical person. Sure he sang in the shower or in the car, but music was not on his radar. But while majoring in history at North Greenville University in South Carolina, Matthew heard the Lord call him to pursue worship. He wasn’t totally sure about moving in that direction, but when he finally did, everything changed. He learned how to play guitar, started leading worship at school, and spent the following two summers with Gateway worship leaders, one of whom is his father, Pastor Mark Harris. Within this God-ordained music microwave, Matthew began writing songs and bringing them to his dad. “I look at him as a teacher when it comes to songwriting,” Matthew says. One day while driving through Keller, he started singing a simple upbeat melody with the words, “Your love has found us.” “Matthew and I had talked about the lack of up-tempo worship songs being written lately, so when he walked in with this melody, I immediately loved it,” Pastor Mark says. Basing the lyrics for “Love Has Found Us” on Psalm 139 with a little bit of Romans 8 thrown in, Pastor Mark and Matthew worked together to flesh out the rest of the chorus and verses, even writing the last verse over Skype after Matthew returned to school. In addition to being from different generations with vastly different musical styles, they are TWO YEARS AGO, MATTHEW HARRIS

father and son, so it would be understandable if tensions ran high in songwriting sessions—but not with the Harris men. “When hanging out or driving together, we’ll listen to his music for a bit, and then we’ll listen to my music, and then it’ll all just become our music,” Matthew says. And when they co-write, it’s the best of both worlds. “I rely heavily on Matthew’s melodic instinct and the way he approaches saying something I might’ve said so many times,” Pastor Mark says. “He probably gives me more instruction and clarity than I give him.” Matthew laughs in return, “I don’t know about that, Dad.” While working through the song, they talked a lot about bringing lyrical depth to it, something more often seen in ballads or anthems, not up-tempo songs. And it was the bridge Matthew wrote that really wowed them both. “There’s a thing called prosody, and it’s when the lyrics and the music fit perfectly together, like a hand in a glove,” Pastor Mark says. “It’s fun to sing and sticks in people’s heads, so they end up humming that truth over their life. That’s the ultimate goal.” And when Anna Byrd was slated to sing the song on the record, another kind of prosody occurred. “I’m so happy Anna was the one to do it. I love her voice,” Matthew says. “It fit perfectly.” GL “Love Has Found Us” is available on Gateway Worship’s new album, Walls.

As Pastor Robert announced in October, Gateway will open its firstever Dallas Campus in spring 2016 with Tom Lane taking the lead as the new campus pastor. This news came as a surprise to many because Pastor Tom has been Gateway’s lead executive senior pastor, or as Pastor Robert might say, “my right arm,” for more than a decade. Now he has passed the baton to his son Pastor Todd Lane because God opened the doors and gave him a deep passion to be a part of this new venture in Dallas. location: We are serious about making a big impact in the city of Dallas, and the potential for Gateway’s influence there is huge. Within a 10-mile radius, there are 1,614 active Gateway families, 3,551 inactive families, and a total population of 772,000. In all, conservative estimates tell us our initial impact could be as many as 8,000 to 10,000 people. Pastor Tom is excited about reaching these families and has had a heart for the people of Dallas for years. But there’s a deeper history at work for him. Decades ago, Pastor Morris Sheats of Trinity Church in Lubbock was extremely influential in the formation of Trinity Fellowship, which Pastor Tom helped to start alongside Jimmy Evans. Much of that influence is felt today at Gateway. In 1984, Morris Sheats moved to Dallas, where he planted and led

Hillcrest Church for 19 years. That church was purchased by Prestonwood Baptist and is now being purchased by Gateway to become our Dallas Campus. “This campus means a lot to me from that perspective,” says Pastor Tom. “Morris Sheats was influential at a critical season in my life. This new campus is like the closing of a loop for me.” While the campus is beautiful and outfitted with state-ofthe-art technology (Interestingly, Prestonwood consulted Gateway’s Tech Arts Department when installing sound and lighting systems.), there are still several things that need to be set in place before opening weekend. Right now, crews are working to transform the children’s area into Amazing Kids. There is also a Gateway Café and Gateway Bookstore under construction. All of these changes are designed to bring the highest level of ministry to Dallas. Pastors David and Alena Moore, who have been on staff at Gateway since 2001, will lead worship at the Dallas Campus. David, previously the Southlake Campus Worship Pastor, has worked closely with youth worship leaders through Generate—a Gateway ministry he started and has led successfully for 10 years. He and his wife are known for their ability to lead multiple generations into the presence of God, and their strong leadership will impact the people of Dallas. “I love that community because it’s artistic, and there’s a lot of life there,” says Pastor David. “If there’s one thing I’m most excited about, it’s being able to see people there come to know Jesus more.” Gateway Church views this expansion as an answer to prayer and as a major step toward Pastor Robert’s vision of reaching 300,000 people in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. While it has taken 15 years for Gateway to open a campus in Dallas, it’s clear this move is happening in God’s strategic timing. “Over the years, many people have asked me, ‘When is Gateway coming to Dallas?’” says Pastor Tom. “My answer is always the same: ‘Whenever God opens the doors.’ Now we have the opportunity!” GL

GATEWAY CHURCH DALLAS CAMPUS AT A GLANCE Before the Gateway Church Dallas Campus official launch date, there will be several information meetings at the campus. These meetings will take place on December 7, December 14, and January 14. The January 14 meeting will be followed by a night of worship led by Pastors David and Alena Moore. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11 celebrate with an Advent wreath, calendar, or devotional, while others develop their own way of commemorating the season. The important thing is that you set aside those four weeks before Christmas to focus on the entrance of Christ into the world. The celebration of Advent is a reminder that Jesus Christ—God in human flesh—entered into the world to reconcile the Creator with His creation. Invest some time over the next few weeks to connect deeply with the Lord and begin your own tradition of celebrating Advent. As you do, you’ll reconnect with the truth of knowing you’ve been given the greatest gift—the victorious Word made flesh for the redemption and renewal of all creation. You’ll experience the One who ultimately will end all of your waiting. GL

the title: “Journey’s End.” In that moment, God took something that meant death for me and turned it into eternal life. Only God could know something so intimate. That was my turning point. GROWING UP, I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A CHEF. I would watch KERA Channel 13 PBS cooking shows all day long. When I got older, I worked in a fine dining restaurant as a corporate trainer. Part of that training process was chef training. It’s like God honored that dream of mine as a kid and gave that to me just to experience. It was awesome, but I quickly realized I never wanted to do it full-time.

RAUL CABRERA RAUL CABRERA IS THE GATEWAY GROUPS PASTOR AT GATEWAY. HE AND HIS WIFE, LIZ, HAVE THREE SONS, AND A DAUGHTER IS ON THE WAY! I MET MY WIFE AT CHURCH. I remember the first time I saw her—she looked hot. I got invited to Six Flags with her and her friends, and that was when I put on the moves. I made sure my green Mustang was clean, and it worked! She’d probably tell you a completely different story. MY WIFE AND I LOVE THE BEACH. We’re total beach folk and have often asked ourselves the question: If we weren’t doing ministry in Texas, what would we be doing? One time we thought it would be awesome to open up a food truck. We would park it by the beach and just make tacos all day.

28  DECEMBER 2015

I BARTENDED FOR ABOUT SIX YEARS before I became a Christian. During this time, I learned a lot about community. Much of what I learned as a bartender I use today as a groups pastor. I ONCE WORKED BEHIND THE SCENES AT SIX FLAGS doing lighting and video for some of the live entertainment shows, and I really developed a desire to be in a musical one day. So when we came to Gateway, and I had the opportunity to be a part of the first iteration of Truthical in 2011, it was a dream come true. Now I’ve been in five productions at Gateway! I USED TO HAVE PANIC ATTACKS before I became a Christian. I was afraid of dying. The only thing that would make me feel better was music. So I wrote this one song called “Journey’s End.” There was a waitress at the place I worked who was married to a pastor, and one day we started talking about what happens after death. She invited me to speak with her husband. So one night after my bar shift, I went to their house to meet him. He began to describe heaven for me, and he pointed to a picture of a man hugging Jesus. I stopped listening because at the bottom of the painting was

MY WIFE GOT ME INVOLVED IN CROSSFIT. She told me about it, and I thought it was crazy. The first time I went with her, it nearly killed me. Looking back, it wasn’t even a hard workout. I was a chubby kid and always felt like the fat kid. Fast-forward all these years later and we were doing things in CrossFit I never dreamed I could do. It really felt empowering and freeing. And the thing that really keeps us going is the community. You do this workout in a class with the same people each time. You develop this camaraderie that’s so strong. We’re really passionate about physical fitness now. The world has a really strong influence on physical fitness, and a lot of it is focused on the wrong things. But what we’ve been asking lately is what if Jesus was our personal trainer? What would He tell us to do? THE CRAZIEST JOB I’VE EVER HAD was guessing people’s weight at Six Flags. I was 14 or 15 years old, and if a really cute girl would come up, I’d always guess a low number. I was more concerned with what she thought of me than giving away prizes! I wasn’t very good at guessing either. I was just really good with a microphone, so they stuck me there.
