WELCOME
WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE MERRY CHRISTMAS! It is time to create
some family memories. The charm of each Christmas is often shaped by the memories of Christmas past. Building sweet memories of family time is the cornerstone of holiday activity, yet we stress over the perfect gift, the best green bean recipe, the most adorable wrapping paper, and how many lights we can pile on one dead tree. May I dare say, it shouldn’t be so hard to build memories. Several years ago, after weeks of preparing, cleaning, shopping, fretting, wrapping, and organizing—it hit me! Out of nowhere—it hit me! A snowball made of tinsel, tissue, and wrapping paper slapped me in the gateway life gatewaylifemag.com David Smith, Thomas Miller, Senior Pastoral Oversight Lawrence Swicegood, Editor-in-Chief project management Tracey Schwellinger
head. Not some metaphoric thought, but a real-life paper snowball. The atomic paper wasn’t intended for me, but I got hit in the crossfire. You see, when our kids, along with their cousins, realized they were too old to be grounded, they started something I am confident is unique to our family. Every neatly wrapped present is a potential weapon. As one gift is unwrapped, the paper is wadded up into the shape of a snowball. The kids would try to wait until everyone opened all the gifts, but self-restraint doesn’t run that deeply when the opportunity presents itself to smack an inattentive relative in the face. We didn’t plan for that to be our thing. No one ever sits around the table remembering what we had for dinner or how the tree was decorated last year, but the kids still debate who drew “first blood” years ago and who got in the best shot in this year’s saga of our wrapping paper snowball fight. editorial Stacy Burnett, Managing Editor Daniel Hopkins, Senior Writer/Editor Shea Tellefsen, Staff Writer/Editor Katie Smith, Staff Writer Sydnie Shreffler, Staff Writer Georgette Shuler, Copy Editor
Still we wrap gifts, decorate the tree, and try to cook an edible meal because we love family. We look forward to the look in the eyes of the grandkids as they discover the wonders of the holiday. But I have learned to relax when it comes to creating memories because they are likely to hit me in the head. At Gateway, we started a holiday tradition. Every year we celebrate Christmas with a musical. This year Truthical is back by popular demand! It's one of the most popular musicals that Gateway has ever produced. I hope you will invite your friends and family to join us for this Broadwaystyle production. (Turn to page 12 for a behind-the-scenes peek.) It is our hope that this issue of Gateway Life does more than just put you in the Christmas spirit. Maddie Mendenhall’s story of healing from a brain tumor will inspire you (page 14). And, if you’re looking for local Christmas activities to get the family out of the house, we have some great ideas for you (page 10)! Finally, a word of wisdom from a shallow thinker. Duck! Incoming! Wrapping paper snowballs are headed your way (metaphorically, of course!). Remember, memories are being created even if they are not the ones you were trying to create. Be blessed,

FAVORITE MUSIC? My favorite music is ’80s new wave. I’m an ’80s child and grew up listening to bands like New Order and Duran Duran. MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? Thinking I looked good in parachute pants in 1983. Come on, I know there are more people out there who thought the same of themselves! PROUDEST MOMENT? Aside from my wedding day and the birth of my sons, escorting my 90-year-old father during a World War II Honor Flight and watching him walk through a hero’s welcome at the airport when he returned home. WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? Marcia Brady’s boyfriend. WHAT IS SOMETHING NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT YOU? When I am in my 70s, I want to be the greeter at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri.

Tell Me Something Good An update on “Open House” from Gateway Life’s September issue: “When you’re becoming a foster parent, you have to pass three pretty difficult home inspection visits. Our first visit—the fire inspection—was two days after Gateway Life came out. When the fireman walked in the backyard, he looked at the fort and stopped. He turned around and said, ‘Wait, are you the Beasleys?’ He and his wife attend the North Fort Worth Campus, and he had just read our article and recognized the fort from the photograph. After that, his demeanor became warmer and more relational, and he offered to help our family any time we needed it. A week or so later, our foster care agency came out to inspect everything in the house. Sometimes it’s hard to have a personal connection with them because they deal with so many people. So I said, ‘Why don’t I show you our story?’ and handed her the magazine. She started crying. She took the story back to her agency, and they are going to send it out in their national newsletter to encourage all of their caseworkers. The third visit—our Child Protective Services home study— was the most difficult. This was the big kahuna! It’s meant to be an intense, five-hour interview
and inspection. When I told her we attend Gateway, she stopped and said, ‘Don’t tell me you’re the Beasleys from the magazine!’ She attends the Frisco Campus, and we got to share our desire to teach the kids how to hear the Lord. The inspections were still intense, but they were all dramatically impacted by the story. We still had to have all of our ducks in a row, but each inspection turned from a staunch meeting to a relaxed talk with a friend. It was such a good experience.” >> Lindsey Beasley To read the Beasleys’ story, visit gatewaylifemag.com.
During one of the baptism services on September 28 at the NRH Campus, the Buckinghams—a family of 13— baptized their eight youngest children. Audrey Chirico, the oldest family member baptized that day, shares their story: “My seven younger siblings ( five sisters and two brothers) were planning to be baptized. (The youngest just turned 11 recently!) The weekend before the baptism services, Pastor Stokes Collins said, ‘If you haven’t been baptized since you’ve been saved, you should be baptized.’ I was baptized when I was six, and although I do remember it, I don't

think I fully understood! I believe that the gospel really made sense to me when I was 12, and I committed my life to Christ then. I had thought about getting baptized all week and finally talked to my husband about it on Friday night. Saturday, I talked to Pastor Larry Brown, and he encouraged me. So Sunday, I brought my shorts and joined my brothers and sisters! It was super special for all of us to be baptized together! People were tearing up just watching! Our older siblings came to watch too. Then, we all went to my parents’ house and celebrated!” >> Audrey Chirico
Fall Festival: “My family went to the Fall Festival and took an eight-year-old friend from a local elementary school. Fall Festival was a huge deal to this little girl. She kept saying, ‘This is the best day of my life!’ Gateway also made volunteering pleasant. Everything was organized and clearly marked. It takes a lot of time and resources to pull off an event this big. I am truly grateful!” >> Noelle Preston

ONE GIFT CAN CHANGE A LIFE. ONE LIFE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD. by KATIE SMITH
The Bible is filled with stories surrounding the power of one. One child gave his lunch so the masses could eat. One covenant birthed a nation. One man delivered his people from slavery. We are called to help, love, and care for people, and though we may have little to give, He can multiply it. Whether it’s one gift card, one car, or one day of your time, you have the opportunity to change lives this Christmas.
6 DECEMBER 2014
GIFT CARDS FOR SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES Every year during the holidays, many single parents are unable to give their children Christmas gifts. Through your generosity, we are able to bless Gateway’s single parent families during the holidays. You can give a special offering designated to the Single Parent Families Ministry or donate Walmart, Target, or other major retail store gift cards. Please place check or cash donations and gift cards in a clearly marked envelope and place in an Offering Container located in the back of the Auditorium or give online at egiving.gatewaypeople.com.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
END-OF-YEAR GIVING
To many people, a car symbolizes opportunity: the opportunity to make money, be independent, pursue recreational activities, or provide for their family’s needs. Over the past 11 years, the Generous Life Ministry at Gateway has provided families in need with a reliable car, truck, or van! There are still many more families at Gateway who need a dependable vehicle but aren’t in a financial position to purchase one. You can make a difference in a family this Christmas by donating your used car. For more information or to donate, email vehicle@gatewaypeople.com.
As thousands of people, mostly first-time visitors, flood through Gateway’s doors this Christmas season, we need caring and cheerful volunteers at all campuses to be ushers, greeters, parking lot attendants, Guest Central hosts, Fresh Start volunteers, and Welcome Center workers. A smile and a helping hand can be a valuable gift to someone this Christmas. For more information, visit gxp.gatewaypeople.com.
If you would like to give to Gateway’s Heart for the Kingdom initiative or any other ministry at Gateway before December 31, place your offering in a clearly marked envelope in any Offering Container located in the back of the Auditorium, or give online at egiving.gatewaypeople.com.
ONE KIND WORD CAN SOFTEN A HEART. ONE SMILE CAN MAKE SOMEONE’S DAY. ONE GIFT CAN CHANGE A LIFE. ONE LIFE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD.
To receive tax credit with the IRS, all 2014 contributions must be received or postmarked by Wednesday, December 31. You can also drop them at our Ministry Headquarters or any of our campuses by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, December 30. I LOVE STORIES. I devour them every chance I get. The people who know me best might even say I’m addicted to stories. They ignite my imagination, transport me to places I want to visit, and introduce me to characters—both real and fictional—whom I would never meet outside the pages of a book, the frame of a movie, or the screen of a TV. Jesus primarily used parables—or stories—to teach people truths about our heavenly Father and His kingdom. Why? Because stories transform cold, hard facts into meaningful principles and lessons. They connect our thoughts to our emotions in inexplicable ways. That’s probably why I love musicals so much. Now, I get that musicals aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. But to me, a good musical combines the emotion of music with the liveliness of a story. As a writer, I’m passionate about communicating in a way that speaks to people at a heart level, and I feel like musicals are an effective way to do that. When Pastor Walker Beach first told me we were going to perform Truthical once again for Christmas this year, I was excited. First of all, it’s such a blessing to be part of a church that embraces the arts and understands its value
in reaching those who don’t normally step inside the four walls of a church building. Secondly, Truthical is my alltime favorite Gateway musical thus far. Seriously, what’s not to love about a show with all of the most beloved songs in film and theatre history? Now, for those of you who didn’t see Truthical the first time, you’re in for a treat. For those of you who did see it, I promise you’ll love it too! While it still carries the same name, this is a whole new show. I want to pull back the curtain and give you a sneak peek at what went on behind the scenes in retooling this show. But don’t worry—no spoilers here! This year, I had the privilege of working with a gifted team. I’ll be honest, Pastor Walker Beach, Pastor David Schubert, and Erik Snodgrass are insanely creative, and I’ve had a blast working with them. For the last six months— week in and week out—our days have been devoted to writing and rewriting the songs and script … and then rewriting some more. We spent so much time on it, because we were committed to making Truthical a show you can invite your friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members to and not worry that they’ll feel preached at or excluded. We knew we had to make this show accessible for everyone, which is why we decided to look at the show (as best as we could) from the perspective of someone who doesn’t attend church regularly. After all, those are the very people we want to reach. However, it’s more than just about entertainment. At this year’s Gateway Conference, Pastor Robert said, “We’re not doing a Christmas production just so we can all come and be entertained ... the main reason is so people can come and be saved.” To that end, we came up with the idea of having Kate— one of our new lead characters—be the voice of the audience. Through her eyes and perspective, we’re introduced to the world of Truthical. Using melodies from some of the most iconic songs in musical and film history, our goal was to have Kate go on a 55-minute journey to truth that felt authentic. And while it contains a lot of truth (it is called Truthical), I promise it’s also funny and entertaining. The first night our cast of 68 talented dancers and singers met to read through the new script, Pastor Walker Beach told them: “Whatever you remember from three years ago. This isn’t it ... It’s better!” GL

three healthy children had ever suffered a seizure, but in their front entryway one night in early August, all that changed. Their 12-year-old daughter Maddie—their youngest—stood up, only to buckle into her mother’s arms. Maddie’s 17-year-old brother Josh frantically called 911 as Vanessa laid Maddie NONE OF DAVID AND VANESSA MENDENHALL’S

down, hovering over her wide-open, yet blank, eyes. “Just blink and let me know you’re okay,” Vanessa shouted as Maddie stared up at nothing. There was no response. Earlier that night, Maddie had been complaining about her right leg being numb. David and Vanessa didn’t think much of it. After all, Maddie is an active kid and could
have injured herself that day. At one point, her leg was so numb she had to sit down. When she stood up again, that’s when the seizure began. Even though Maddie wasn’t responding, she remembers the whole thing. She tried to blink for several minutes and was finally able to. It’s hard to know what was louder, the Mendenhalls’ celebration when Maddie was able to move her eyelids or the ambulance driving through the neighborhood. By the time they reached the hospital, Maddie had fully regained consciousness. David and Vanessa thought it was a knee problem, but a CT scan revealed something much more troubling. “They took us to a monitor in the emergency room and showed us a white spot on her brain,” says David. “At that point, as parents, we probably should have just lost it right there.” Instead, a different feeling overtook them. They began to feel a peace that would sustain them over the next few days—even as the news got worse and worse. “I’ve heard of peace that passes understanding,” says Vanessa. “It’s real, and it’s unbelievable!” During their weeklong stay at the hospital, Maddie’s room was filled with people from Gateway—all of whom were singing and praying. The amount of support and prayer they received from the church was overwhelming. An MRI scan was scheduled to give a better look at the white spot. Doctors were convinced it was a brain tumor. They believed a full recovery was unlikely and told the Mendenhalls the outlook was grim. Upon hearing the news, Maddie’s only words were, “Brain tumor? Really?!” “She didn’t accept it,” says Vanessa. “She turned into somebody we didn’t recognize. She had so much peace over her.” The key for Maddie was to focus on the Bible story of Peter walking on water. In Matthew 14:28–30, Jesus’ disciples were in a boat when a terrible storm hit. Suddenly, they saw Jesus walking on the water. Peter jumped out of the boat and walked toward Him, but when he saw the waves and became scared he began to sink. “Eyes on Jesus,” says Maddie. “When the doctor was giving us bad news, we kept our eyes on Jesus.” There was a lot of bad news to wade through, and the doctors were pessimistic. In fact, one of them earned the nickname “Dr. Doom.” However, when Maddie met her neurosurgeon, something was different. “This was a godly man,” says David. “He led us in prayer right before
the surgery. He said, ‘God, let my hands be Your hands.’” Several hours into the surgery, the neurosurgeon reached the tumor in Maddie’s head. A cancer specialist came to David and Vanessa to prepare them for the worst. He said, “She may not ever be able to walk again, and she’ll need to immediately begin radiation to prevent the tumor from returning.” Vanessa looked at him and said, “We don’t accept that. God has a bigger plan.” A short time after, a nurse burst in the room. She took the Mendenhalls to the pathology lab to meet with the neurosurgeon. He sat down with them and calmly said, “It’s not a tumor. In fact, I’ve never seen anything like it before.” Just as quickly as the bad news came, the good news started pouring in. Within two hours of surgery, Maddie was sitting up and eating soup, and the next day she was able to return to her hospital room. If it weren’t for the bandages, you wouldn’t know a surgery had just happened. The incision on the top of her head was hardly noticeable. In follow-up meetings pediatricians have said, “Your recovery is nothing short of a miracle.” And the doctors who have run tests on the unknown, liquefied object removed from Maddie’s head are dumbfounded. After 30 to 40 tests, results are inconclusive. One thing is for certain— it’s not cancer. There will be no radiation or chemotherapy. Maddie gets to return to her normal life, and she was even back at Gateway Students within 10 days of surgery. A few weeks later, David received an unexpected phone call. It was a doctor friend who ran into Maddie’s neurosurgeon at a medical conference. David’s friend asked him what he thought happened with the tumor. The neurosurgeon said, “It’s either one or two things. Either God liquefied the tumor from the time of diagnosis, or her brain created a type of liquid no physician in the world has ever seen. I’m leaning toward the first one.” The Mendenhalls know it was a miracle, and they know God was in control the entire time. In the darkest moments of their lives, they experienced overwhelming peace. “We think we’re in control of our lives, but we have no control. God has your days, and when you are low, it’s God who catches you,” says Vanessa. “When we were in that hospital looking at the worst case scenario of our lives, He was there. No matter what you go through, He’s going to be there.” GL

MARK HARRIS'S

by DANIEL HOPKINS IN THE SUMMER OF 1992, Mark Harris was in the Christmas spirit. He, Don Cook, and Dave Clark had been piecing together a Christmas song, but the deadline to complete it for the new 4Him Christmas project was looming. And in the middle of an August night, Mark couldn’t stop thinking about Bethlehem. “I was sitting there at the dining room table in the wee hours of morning thinking, ‘We’ve got to complete this song,’” says Mark. “My wife, Jodie, and I had this little nativity—it wasn’t a real expensive one. I set it up and looked at the different people in the scene. That’s when it hit me that the song needed to be about Joseph and how he felt inadequate for his calling. Then, part of the chorus came to me: ‘Why me? / I’m just a simple man of trade. / Why Him? / With all the rulers in the world. / Why here? Inside this stable filled with hay. / Why her? She’s just an ordinary girl.’” The song, “A Strange Way to Save the World,” would go on to be one of the most popular Mark has ever written. Over the years, it’s been recorded and performed by dozens of artists, including Rascal Flatts, who performed the song for the 2013 CMA Country Christmas program on ABC. But all of these accolades eclipse one of the song’s more interesting facts: It almost wasn’t recorded. “It was the last song we’d written for The Season of Love [4Him’s 1993 Christmas album], and the question we kept asking ourselves was, ‘Are we even going to finish the song?’” says Mark. “The day we went into the studio to record it, we didn’t have the finished lyrics for the second verse.” At the last minute, Dave Clark wrote some lyrics to what became the most important verse—the one that invites the listener to imagine if Jesus’ birth had been different. “To think of how it could have been / If Jesus had come as He deserved. / There would have been no Bethlehem. / No lowly shepherds at His birth.” The song’s fresh perspective helps people relate to the Christmas story in a new way, and it also helps people examine their own lives. Mark says we all feel like Joseph from time to time—not fully capable of carrying out our callings. “What I love about this song is that most of my life I’ve never felt qualified or talented enough to do the job I’ve been given,” says Mark. “Then later on in life, I looked back at my journey and realized, ‘I’m really not, but God is.’”
“A Strange Way to Save the World,” from Mark Harris’s album Christmas Is, can be purchased on iTunes.

PROFILE
I wasn’t ready for it to be over. Now, whenever I want to hear Christmas music or watch a Christmas movie, I just do it! My all-time favorite is White Christmas. I’ve watched it more times than I can even count. THOMAS: My favorite hobby is running. When I picked that up two years ago, the first race I entered was the Disney marathon. Then I found out there was also a half-marathon the day before the race and a 5K the day before that. So I entered all of them. When I decide to do something, sometimes I go to extremes! MARY BETH: My favorite thing to do is create beautiful things—art, photos, stories, songs—in hopes to make a difference in people’s lives. Right now, I’m launching dreamstart.us, creating and selling multiple art forms and using proceeds to help abused and abandoned children. Our first art collection releases in early 2015, and I’m so excited!
THOMAS & MARY BETH MILLER HAVE BEEN AT GATEWAY SINCE DECEMBER 2000. HE IS AN ASSOCIATE SENIOR PASTOR, AND TOGETHER THEY SERVE IN GATEWAY WORSHIP AND HAVE A SON NAMED HARRISON (10)
THOMAS: When I was a kid, I wanted to be an engineer. I loved music and took piano lessons and was involved in choir, but I never thought of music as a profession. I studied engineering in college and that’s where I met Mary Beth. She was the homecoming queen! MARY BETH: When we were rehearsing for the homecoming awards on the football field, I received a dozen roses from Thomas. I still have those rose petals. THOMAS: I came to Texas with a thick West Virginia accent. We went to Christ For the Nations Institute (CFNI), and our friends would have people call our answering machine just to listen to my accent. You know who those friends are? Pastor Randy and Cheri Cochran! MARY BETH: We started our Christmas music and movies early this year—in September! One year, I decided not to listen to Christmas music until the day after Thanksgiving. But when Christmas came,
24 DECEMBER 2014
THOMAS: When we first came to Gateway, we were both happy with our jobs at CFNI—she was the director of admissions, and I had just started full-time at CFNI’s School of Worship. I got a call from a friend saying, “There’s a new church in the Dallas area, and they’re looking for a worship pastor. You’d be great for the job!” I wasn’t really interested in leaving my job. Eventually, my friend talked me into meeting the pastor of the church, and in November of 2000, Mary Beth and I met with Pastor Robert and Debbie. He shared his vision with us and asked if we would come lead worship a few times in December. We agreed to do it. At the end of the second weekend we led at Gateway, Pastor Robert came to me and said, “The Lord spoke to me during worship. You’re the worship pastor for Gateway.” A few days later, I was praying about it, and God completely confirmed to me that we were to come to Gateway. In that moment, I knew I was supposed to be the worship pastor of Gateway Church. MARY BETH: After that second weekend, Pastor Robert asked, “Have you guys been to Southlake Town Square?” We hadn’t, so he and Debbie took us there for dinner. When we drove in and I saw trees covered in Christmas lights, my heart melted. We fell in love with the place and are thrilled to still be living nearby today!
