WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE RECENTLY I WAS PREPARING TO TEACH

on the subject of marriage. Everyone knows when you teach on that topic you have to include Genesis 2:24, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” But when I reviewed that passage, something I’ve never noticed before jumped out at me: “They shall become one flesh.” As I was reading that passage, I thought about how my wife, Rose, and I will celebrate our 40th anniversary in

May. During our marriage, we’ve had many seasons of “they shall become one flesh.” It didn’t automatically happen the moment we said, “I do.” But after the wedding we started living together, and we were faced with the daily challenges of married life. Even the small issues like does the toilet paper roll from the top or the bottom? made it clear that becoming one flesh was a process. Then we had kids, and our need to become one was even clearer. In marriage, you never really leave the season of “they shall become one flesh.” One tool that has made this process easier is a vision retreat, and I want to encourage every married couple at Gateway to take one. When Rose and I

take a vision retreat, we select a place to go for a weekend, and we spend time relaxing mixed with time focusing on our vision for the current season. We use it to discuss our thoughts, dreams, and impressions from the Lord as well as topics from previous retreats. At the end, we’ll write down our vision and some action items. These times have been very significant for us over the years. One of the best resources for vision retreats comes from Pastor Jimmy Evans, who is bringing the XO Marriage Conference to Gateway February 12 to 13. I’m so excited about this conference, and I believe it will benefit every married couple at Gateway. I’m also excited about this issue of Gateway Life, which features a great article on marriage by Pastor Jimmy Evans (page 12). We have an incredible testimony from our Relational Care Ministry (page 10), and an article about how everyone can benefit from freedom ministry (page 16). I hope that as you get settled into 2016, you’ll be encouraged by all that Gateway has to offer you and your entire family. And if you’re married, please take advantage of Gateway’s resources to help you as you and your spouse continue in the process of becoming “one flesh.” Blessings,

“Last night about 50 Gateway Frisco students threw a farewell party for me. They prayed over me, prophesied over me, honored me, and sent me. This was such a healthy part of this transition. The students were able to take charge and make this part of their story as well. I was humbled, honored, and overwhelmed with thankfulness for who God has allowed me to pastor for the past five years. This has always been more than a job; this has been family, and family is personal. I am so grateful for each and every student in Gateway Students!”

HIGH FIVE

EMILY THOMAS

ASSOCIATE PASTOR, FAMILY LIFE

WHAT IS SOMETHING NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT YOU? I’ve been married for 3.5 years and haven’t officially changed my last name yet. I created Flint, Michigan’s first website. I helped write the legislation for new seat belt laws in Poland. WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? Architect, engineer, or prosecutor. I loved designing buildings and using math to determine dimensions. I’m super systemsoriented, and strategic thinking is natural for me so engineering made sense too. I had also always wanted to defend or prosecute because I’m a lover of justice; I’m an investigator by nature, and I can argue any side of a subject. Those logical, albeit selfish, reasons gave way to a deep desire to help people, defend vulnerable groups, and make a difference. WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD? Silly conversations with my husband and watching Life in Pieces. WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE? Chewing/mouth noises drive me bonkers. PROUDEST MOMENT? Graduating with my master’s degree and marrying my husband, George. For more about Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.

“At a recent Gateway baby shower for Embrace Grace, one of the blooms (a single mom-to-be) was running late. The Gateway Group that adopted her was at her table with tons of gifts, waiting for her to show up. When she finally arrived at the Gateway campus, she called a leader saying she couldn’t find anyone. Then they realized she was at the Frisco Campus, which was about an hour away from the campus where the shower was being held. The Gateway Group immediately told her to not move and that they would come to her. With tears and smiles and nervous giggles they reloaded all the gifts into their cars and followed each other an hour away to Frisco. Just like the parable of the shepherd and the lost sheep, they dropped the 99 to go after the one. The momma was so surprised they would do that for her. It’s all worth it—even for the one.” Amy Ford | via Facebook

It was tearing my heart up, but then the Compassion Ministry called and invited me to go to the church tonight and be blessed. I was blown away by the generosity. “This event is more to me than kid-free shopping time. I am a prideful person and believe that I should earn things, take care of my business, and not burden anyone else. So receiving something for free makes me very uncomfortable. But last year and this year, I have had the privilege of being a part of the Single Parent Christmas Party. Each year I tear up as I walk swiftly to my car with two envelopes in hand, and then I sit in the parking lot and cry. For a church to give something like this, to someone who doesn’t deserve it, is baffling and full of a love I have never experienced from another human. And when I opened my prophetic word, the first sentence said, ‘It’s okay to ask for help.’” Anonymous | via Email

FIRST RESPONDERS WHEN A CRISIS HITS A FAMILY, GATEWAY IS THERE by DANIEL HOPKINS

10  FEBRUARY 2016

PASTOR DUSTIN SAMPLE WAS ABOUT TO TAKE HIS LUNCH BREAK

when he received a troubling phone call. Hope DeHart, a relative of Gateway member Kelley Purselley, was in the hospital after suffering a gunshot to the head. Hope—a young girl, just 18—had already spent some time struggling with addiction and got mixed up with the wrong people who shot her in a Fort Worth motel. (The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that the motive is still unknown.) Thinking she was dead, the shooter and an accomplice wrapped her body in a hotel comforter and left her at the end of a dead-end street behind a North Fort Worth QuickTrip around 5:00 am on August 3. A truck driver who had gotten an unusually late start to his day stopped by the store for a cup of coffee and in the early morning light happened to catch a glimpse of Hope’s body. The truck driver called 911, and incredibly there was already an ambulance waiting right there at the convenience store for the next call. The medics quickly found Hope and confirmed she had a pulse, so they rushed her to the hospital. Doctors gave Hope’s mother and father a grim outlook. He didn’t think she would survive, and he cautioned that if she did, she would never regain brain activity. Within hours, Hope’s Aunt Kelley called Gateway’s Relational Care ministry. That’s when Dustin ditched his lunch plans and headed straight to the hospital. This was a unique situation for Dustin, who was the pastor-on-call that week—an assignment given to every Gateway pastor for one week each year. This means pastors are ready and available to make hospital visits, conduct funerals, and show the love of Christ to people who are going through hard times, frequently the most difficult times of their lives. When he got to the hospital’s waiting room, he was met with about 20 family members who didn’t seem optimistic and bristled at the idea of a group prayer. He went to the room to see Hope and prayed for her briefly. However, when he went back to the waiting room he felt boldness well up within him. “I told the family, ‘Make no mistake about it, the Lord’s going to have to perform a miracle for her to get up out of that bed. He’ll do it, but we all need to pray right now,’” says Dustin. The family stood and Dustin led them in a prayer. After that, he said his goodbyes and left, believing full well what he said—God’s going to have to do a miracle. Within days, Kelley emailed with an update: “Hope woke up!” A few days later, there was another one: “Hope is eating.” Miraculous updates kept coming saying Hope is speaking, joking, and even walking. And then the big one: She walked out of the hospital, healed. Hope’s mother, Paige DeHart, says Dustin’s visit made a big impact, and so did the numerous hospital visits from other Gateway pastors in the weeks that followed. “One

“The Lord’s going to have to perform a miracle for her to get up out of that bed.” Gateway minister looked at me and asked if there was anything he could do for me,” says Paige. “I just started crying. I really appreciated him being there.” Gateway’s Relational Care ministry plays a significant part in stories like Hope’s. Gregg Morgan, associate pastor of Relational Care, says Hope’s story embodies one of his favorite aspects of his job at Gateway. He’s had countless opportunities to help people in their time of need, but getting to share the gospel is the icing on the cake. “We’ll receive a call to visit a member in the hospital, and the rest of the family isn’t saved,” says Gregg. “We get to minister the gospel to family members who don’t know God.” More than a year ago, Gregg saw the firsthand benefits of this. He was called upon to officiate a funeral. The people who asked the Relational Care ministry for a pastor to officiate were Gateway members, but most of the 150 people in attendance were not believers. The people organizing the funeral asked Gregg to share the gospel, and he did. “I shared a simple message based on John 3:16 and said that Jesus was a gift we need to receive,” says Gregg. “Fifty people received Christ during that funeral service.” Powerful moments like these have stayed with Gregg over the course of his nearly two years on the job. He loves all aspects of the Relational Care ministry: from Reveille, which helps veterans struggling with returning to civilian life, to Kids in Grief, which helps kids heal after losing a loved one. But his absolute favorite part of what he does is sharing the love of Jesus with people during their most difficult moments. “When a crisis hits—a suicide, funeral, or a trip to the hospital—the family needs a pastor. That’s why Gateway puts such an emphasis on relational care,” says Gregg. “When a family is down and out, my passion is to minister to their grieving need.” That’s exactly what Pastor Dustin did when he visited Hope DeHart and her family. “The moment I prayed with that family, I saw them put their hope in God,” says Dustin. “There’s no doubt we saw a miracle take place.” GL

Gateway’s Relational Care ministry doesn’t just rely on pastors. There are numerous volunteers who share Gregg’s passion for ministering to people who are going through tough times. For more information on Relational Care and how to get involved, visit care.gatewaypeople.com.

ASSEMBLY REQUIRED The Four Habits of Healthy Marriages by Jimmy Evans

IN MARRIAGE, long-term happiness is never the result of luck. It is always because

we do certain things right. Even though you may be convinced that your spouse has most of the problems, you cannot change your spouse. You can only change you. There are four habits that can protect and promote the emotional health in your marriage. When you practice these four habits, you can revive lost passion and take your marriage to the next level.

HABIT 1

PROTECT THE PRIORITY OF THE MARRIAGE

Marriage is the most important thing in our lives with the exception of our personal relationship with God. Every couple should have a weekly date night like you did before you got married. And just to clarify, date night is not when you get chicken and watch American Idol. Give effort and court each other. Plan a great meal, talk about real issues, and plan a fun night of sex. Be intentional and keep the skills of dating alive in your marriage. You’ve probably heard people say, “We are out of love. It must be over. The passion is gone.” Well I totally understand that. You have to decide to do the right thing before you feel like it. You fell in love because you dated each other. You fell out of love because you got lazy. This happens to all of us. Pursue each other and it will keep your marriage the main priority in your life.

HABIT 2

BE POSITIVE THROUGH TOUCH, PRAISE, AND ROMANCE

Men and women both need physical affection. When you don’t feel like being affectionate is when you need affection the most. Hold hands, put your arm around each other, and cuddle on the couch. It is essential. The more nonsexually affectionate a man is, the more sexually responsive a woman becomes. I’ll never understand it, but that’s that way God wired most women. We also need to regularly praise and encourage each other. Praise and honor is especially important for men. Maybe your husband isn’t at home as much as you would like or isn’t focused on the marriage or family. You can recapture his heart through encouragement and praise. The more praise you give him, the more he will want to be with you. We also connect emotionally through romance. Men and women see romance differently through their own needs. For men, romance often involves food, sex, and fun.

GATEWAYPEOPLE.COM  13

“WHEN YOU DON’T FEEL LIKE BEING AFFECTIONATE IS WHEN YOU NEED AFFECTION THE MOST. HOLD HANDS, PUT YOUR ARM AROUND EACH OTHER, AND CUDDLE ON THE COUCH. IT IS ESSENTIAL.” It’s usually a short road. For women, romance is all about pursuit during her day and detailed communication when you’re together. It’s usually a long road. Romance happens when you learn to be romantic in your spouse’s language. HABIT 3

RESOLVE AND REMOVE NEGATIVE EMOTIONS

Removing negative emotions begins by spending time with God every day. If I do not pray and spend time with the Lord, I am going to have anxiety (Philippians 4:6–7), and it changes the way that I relate to everybody, especially my spouse. The second way that we deal with negative emotions is by daily giving our spouse the freedom to complain. Your spouse will never trust you unless they know they can complain without paying a price. Have a daily attitude that says, “I am here to please you. Will you please tell me if I am not succeeding?” For years my fear was if I ever get humble with Karen she would shame me or reject me. The day that I got humble with Karen is the day I became the head of my home. When I allowed Karen to approach me and correct me, I finally got the response from her I had been waiting for. HABIT 4

CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE OF PARTNERSHIP AND SHARING

The fourth habit of healthy couples is partnership. No one dominates in a healthy marriage. An atmosphere of sharing says, “I will never make a significant decision without you.” Sharing means you no longer do things by yourself. You do not buy things alone. You do not make decisions about your job or about important areas of your life without your spouse.

14  FEBRUARY 2016

Over the years, the best decisions we have ever made have been when Karen and I make decisions together. In my opinion, if your spouse does not agree with a major decision in your life, then God has not called you to do it. The decision might even be right, but it may not be the right time. Healthy relationships are marriages where we walk together. As you were reading these four habits, you’ve probably realized an area where some improvement is needed. Well, join the club. None of us have arrived in marriage. Take the first step. Go to your spouse and humbly take responsibility for your part in the relationship. Focus on yourself and trust God to change your spouse. GL Jimmy Evans, along with his wife, Karen, is the founder of MarriageToday, and they are bringing the XO Marriage Conference to Gateway on February 12–13. SONG STORY

JOSIAH FUNDERBURK AND CODY CARNES’

“Who Is Like You?” by KATIE SMITH

IN 2013, Josiah Funderburk was a full-time student at The King’s University in addition to being a bass player and drummer for several Gateway weekly services. With a busy schedule, his time for songwriting was limited, but when a melody and the words “Who is like You” came into his head, he knew it was something worth taking time to work on. “Honestly, I was in the shower when I came up with the melody,” he laughs. But he sat down later with a guitar and his Bible, and using Psalm 89 as a reference, Josiah started crafting verses to match the melody and message. “I wanted to link the magnificence of God with the fact that He wants to know each one of us intimately,” Josiah says. “So the song became about Jesus—the ambassador of heaven who bridges the gap.” And verse lyrics like, “You rule the raging sea and You still my heart” and “Author of history, stepped into time to set me free,” became ways to declare the paradoxical nature of God and the gift of Jesus as a human. Josiah added his simple chorus, and the whole song came together within 30 minutes. But it actually took almost two years to become what it is today. Fast forward to 2015. Josiah submitted a demo version of “Who Is Like You?” to be included on the Gateway Devotional CD, and when it was chosen, Josiah asked his friend Cody Carnes to be the voice for it. “Because who wouldn’t want Cody to sing their song?” Josiah laughs. Cody was in Nashville at the time, but he said yes, listened

to the song, and then sent Josiah an unexpected text. The text asked if Josiah would be open to new lyrics Cody had written for the bridge of the song. “I trust Cody as a songwriter and my friend, and I don’t think he would’ve asked that of just anybody,” Josiah says. Josiah loved the new idea Cody had, and they actually rewrote the entire bridge via text message while Josiah was shopping at Target. The next day, Cody recorded the vocals in Nashville. In a whirlwind of 24 hours, the song was complete—a testament to technology and the good relationship between writer and singer. With Cody’s vocals and the new bridge, Josiah set out to produce the song himself, working with the musicians in the studio and even playing bass for it. Because his favorite lyrics are those in the verses that link the greatness of God and simple humanity, he wanted to produce the song in a way that left room for the verse lyrics to really shine through. The eclectic instrumentation and Cody’s soulful voice did just that. With its slow start and upbeat ending, the song unintentionally became a musical paradox to parallel the lyrics. “It just kind of happened that way when producing it,” Josiah says. “But I’m glad it did!” GL “Who Is Like You?” is on The God I Never Knew: Songs from Gateway Devotions. Available at Gateway Bookstore and iTunes.

FREEDOM ISN’T JUST FOR “THOSE” PEOPLE by PASTOR BETH HELTON

16  FEBRUARY 2016

SIX YEARS AGO, I WAS ON STAFF IN A CHURCH IN FLORIDA and I traveled to Gateway Church to learn about freedom ministries. I had been in successful ministry for 25 years, but I was frustrated because what I saw in my church were people not living a transformed life. We taught them to be leaders in the church, but when you heard their stories, it was clear they were struggling. It was made especially clear to me one night when I asked our youth group of 650 kids if they struggled with loneliness. Eighty percent of those kids stood up and said they cried themselves to sleep each night from being lonely. That moment wrecked me because I could see that our church wasn’t meeting the deepest needs of our teenagers. And in the years after I transitioned to working with adults, I continued to see many of the same issues with them. I decided to go on a quest to find some kind of ministry that would work for the people in our church. That’s when I found out about Gateway’s freedom ministry. My plan was to visit Gateway, see what freedom was all about, and bring it back to help all “those” people who needed freedom at our church. It was a shock to discover I was one of “those” people! I needed freedom as much as anyone. Through that experience, freedom ministry transformed my life. I quickly realized it was the most effective tool I’d ever seen to help people encounter God in a profoundly personal way—and it changed the trajectory of my life. I found the person I was created and redeemed to be—a freedom pastor. Eventually, my family moved from Florida to Texas so I could take a job as a freedom pastor at Gateway, where I have the privilege of helping people discover the freedom that I, and so many others, have found. However, one of the biggest hurdles I see people face is the one I overcame on that visit to Gateway six years ago—the idea that “freedom ministry isn’t for me.” Perhaps someone may have told you, “You need to go through freedom ministry!” Maybe you’ve heard someone say, “If you’re struggling with an issue, you need freedom.” Or in the heat of a debate, your frustrated spouse or parent may have blurted out, “You need freedom!” Our tendency is to think that freedom is for the people who are really messed up, but not for us. But the truth is, a good description of someone who should go through freedom ministry at Gateway is simple: If you’re living and breathing, you need freedom! Why? Life has happened and will continue to happen to all of us. Without exception, we’ve all experienced wounds to our soul, lies from the enemy, repeating patterns in our lives, and possibly even demonic oppression. In other words, we’re all a little messed up and that’s okay! But it’s not okay to stay that way. It’s wonderful to be a part of a church that values honesty regarding the issues we all face. Our culture at Gateway is

one where it’s safe to admit we struggle. Pastor Robert has stated from the pulpit, “I want every member of Gateway to go through freedom,” and he models by example his own vulnerability regarding his past and his journey to freedom. The whole purpose of freedom is to help you become the person you were created and redeemed by God to be. “So where do I start,” you may ask? The first step in your freedom journey is to attend, or watch online, our Freedom Basics classes. These four classes are offered every Sunday at the Southlake Campus, and every other month at each extension campus. Freedom Basics are the prerequisite for attending KAIROS, a powerful two-day event held four times a year that focuses on inner healing; breaking strongholds; and physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual healing. And in the summer, we offer Kids KAIROS and Teen KAIROS. These events are completely free because Gateway values freedom! One recent attendee said, “I didn’t think I really needed KAIROS, but once I attended I realized how much I did! It was truly life changing! Thank you so much for this powerful ministry. I’ll never be the same!”

WE’RE ALL A LITTLE MESSED UP AND THAT’S OKAY! Freedom Ministries is also thrilled to announce the creation of a brand new KAIROS II, which will help you walk in your new freedom and identity! Mark your calendars for the first KAIROS II on May 19–20. If someone (possibly even me) has come on a little strong by insisting you need freedom, it’s probably because this ministry has dramatically impacted many of us, and we want the people we care about to have a similar experience. Please don’t let that keep you from learning more about it. Instead, the next time someone declares, “You need freedom!” just smile and say, “I know, don’t we all?” GL Beth Helton is a pastor in Freedom Ministries. TWO COUPLES SHARE HOW THEY MET AT GATEWAY by KATIE SMITH

IF YOUR MOM EVER TOLD YOU that church is a great place to meet

your spouse, she might have been right. With Gateway as large as it is and with its many opportunities for groups and connections, there are bound to be some Gateway love stories. So this Valentine’s Day, let’s celebrate some couples whose romances originated within the halls of Gateway Church.

JACOB & NEELI BRISKY Married on November 20, 2015

JACOB: I first saw Neeli

at a worship team evaluation in February 2013. I was there working as an audio tech. We did not meet that day, but I heard her sing. I thought, Oh. My. Gosh. and I made sure to remember her name: Neeli.

18  FEBRUARY 2016

NEELI: I never saw him on that day in February, but in August

that same year, I was a part of Gateway’s summer musical, The Show. Jacob was working with Tech Arts backstage. During a run-through of the production, I was sitting on the floor in the hallway, just waiting for my part, and all of a sudden, I heard someone say, “Hey, Neeli.” I looked up and thought, Who is this guy? How does he know my name? This Tech Arts guy said, “Here’s a chair. You don’t have to sit on the floor.” It was so sweet. Of course that gesture led to many hallway conversations during rehearsals and performances. Now during productions, there’s a sign in the hall that says, “Loiter Not,” and I always make the joke that it’s preventing people from meeting their future spouses! JACOB: Even with all the hallway talking, I still hadn’t told

her my name.

NEELI: I never asked because I thought, What if we met before? Then I’m going to feel ridiculous! It was probably a month before I actually figured out what his name was. Until then, he was known around my house as “The TA

Guy” [laughter]. When the production ended and it was time for the cast party, I prayed, “Lord, please let him be there.” And he was! As I walked in, I saw him staring at me from the other side of the room, and I thought, Oh my gosh, he’s about to walk over here, and sure enough, he did. I was blushing. I didn’t know if he could tell.

and me after the service and introduced himself, but it was kind of awkward. JOEL: [laughter] It took so much courage. I thought, Just

go say “hi.” So I did, but I didn’t know what to say after that. Then her mom said, “Merry Christmas!” So I said, “Merry Christmas!” and then I walked off. I asked the Lord to give JACOB: I couldn’t tell. I just knew I had to cross that crowded me an opportunity to ask her out. Then the First Conference room to talk to her that night. came around at the Southlake Campus, but I couldn’t pay attention to the service because she was sitting three rows NEELI: After that night, we started running into each other at in front of me. When the service ended, I walked up the church on the weekends. Sometimes he would work upstairs, aisle toward her. She was talking to someone, so I waited for but he would always conveniently make it downstairs. Then her to finish talking, and finally she looked at me and said, I started conveniently making it upstairs! “I’m sorry. Did you want to talk to me?” And I said, “Yeah.” JACOB: I knew I wanted a relationship with Neeli, and I

prayed about calling her dad first for his blessing. When I finally called him, he didn’t recognize my name. I thought, This can’t be good [laughter]. But her dad said he would talk to Neeli. The next day he called me back, and gave me his blessing along with Neeli’s phone number. That was May 13, 2014, the same day our relationship started, because I couldn’t wait to call her. We got engaged six months later but had a long engagement. NEELI: 360 days long! JACOB: Both of Neeli’s sisters got married during that time

also, so we had to wait our turn. I’ve been at Gateway since 2000—when it started. So it’s pretty special that we met right here, behind the scenes, and that the Lord would orchestrate it to lead to our marriage.

JOEL & MONICA MALDONADO Married on January 8, 2016

MONICA: I started attending the Grand Prairie Campus in the spring of 2014. And I would always see Joel there because he was a deacon, but I assumed he was married! Then at the Christmas candlelight service, he came up to my parents

MONICA: So I said, “I know you from Grand Prairie, right?” He introduced himself, and I said, “I’m Monica. Nice to meet you!” not remembering that we had met a few weeks before. Then I said, “You’re married to … who’s your wife?” And he said, “I don’t have a wife.” It was pretty embarrassing for me, but we just laughed. We talked for a few minutes, and then he asked me if I wanted to have coffee sometime. JOEL: She said yes and gave me her number. And as she was

walking away, she turned around and asked me what my last name was. So I told her, “Maldonado.” She left, and I just thought, I’m about to get looked up on Facebook.

MONICA: Of course, as soon as I got in my car, I looked him up on Facebook [laughter]. I also texted my brothers, Daniel and Jesse, and said, “Joel Maldonado just asked me out. What’s his story?” Daniel texted me back and said, “He’s a great guy.” So that Saturday, we went and had coffee. Joel was so intentional from the very beginning. Toward the end of the date, he said, “Okay, I want to take you out to dinner next week.” JOEL: She agreed, and so every weekend after that—literally

every weekend—we saw each other.

MONICA: And we got married two days before the one-year anniversary of that first coffee date! GL

If you and your spouse met at Gateway, we’d love to hear your story! Share your story and a picture on social media and use #gatewaytolove.

ACTIVITIES

VALENTINE’S DECODER

26  FEBRUARY 2016

VALENTINE’S PLAY DOUGH WHERE

INGREDIENTS 2 cups of all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil ½ cup of salt 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar Red food coloring (optional) 1 ½ cups of boiling water A few drops of glycerin (optional—gives the play dough shine!) DIRECTIONS 1. In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour, oil, salt, and cream of tartar. 2. Add food coloring to the boiling water, then add water in increments to the dry ingredients. 3. Stir continuously until it is a fully combined, sticky dough. (You may not use all the water.) 4. Add the glycerin (optional). 5. Let it cool down. Then, take it out of the bowl and knead it vigorously until all of the stickiness is gone. This is the most important part of the process, so keep at it until it’s perfect! (If it’s too sticky, add a little flour until it’s just right.) Store play dough in an airtight container in a dark, cool place for up to six months.

MEET

FOR WHO COULD EVER LEARN TO LOVE A BEAST?

In 1991, Walt Disney Pictures released their retelling of the French fairy tale, Beauty & the Beast, published by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont in 1756, and it quickly became one of the most iconic and beloved animated films of our time. We all know the story of the prince who is magically transformed into a monster as punishment for his arrogance, and Belle, a beautiful young woman whom he imprisons in his castle. To become a prince again, Beast must win her love in return. In the end, it’s Belle’s ability to look past the Beast’s monstrous exterior and love the person within that overturns the curse. But why does this fairy tale have such enduring relevance, even 25 years after its release? The great author and thinker G. K. Chesterton firmly believed in and defended the power of fairy tales. And out of the countless fairy tales, Beauty & the Beast was Chesterton’s favorite because it teaches us that the “unlovely must be deeply loved before they become lovable.” Chesterton’s phrase is similar to the Apostle Paul’s words: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, NIV). So, while we were still unlovely because of our sin, Jesus showed His love for us by dying for us. Jesus healed the lepers He encountered. He extended forgiveness to the woman caught in adultery. He spent time with criminal tax collectors. He loved the unlovable and refused to stop showing His love and compassion to every person He encountered. And we’re called to do the same: to shine the light of Christ in the darkest of places; to love the unlovely, the abandoned, the neglected, the forgotten, the downtrodden, and the oppressed; and to help transform the beasts of this world into princes. It all comes down to love. And we love because we are loved.

Beauty & the Beast really is “a tale as old as time” because it echoes the Greatest Story Ever Told: “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends …” (1 Corinthians 13:7–8, ESV). by S . G E O R G E T H O M A S

PROFILE

a student assistant with the football team. During that time, I connected with a guy who felt called to start a youth prison ministry. So a couple years later, I moved to Texas to help him and coached high school football in Arlington. I loved coaching, and I think pastors and coaches are very similar because you’re helping people identify potential, whether that is a God-gifted talent or just helping people see themselves the way He does.

JELANI LEWIS JELANI IS THE ASSOCIATE CAMPUS PASTOR AT THE FRISCO CAMPUS. HE AND HIS WIFE, ERIN, HAVE A DAUGHTER, JUDAH, AND A SON, JADON.

I MET MY WIFE when I interviewed her to be my assistant. I was in children’s ministry here at the time, and when she walked in for the interview, I thought, she’s cute, but I kept it professional. Later, I thought, I should keep her for the rest of my life! She says she couldn’t believe I was a children’s pastor because I was so serious in the interview. In the end, I only had a part-time position available, and Pastor Randy Cochran had a full-time one, so she chose to work for Pastor Randy. But it was all God because if she would have chosen to work for me, then one day I would have had to come into the office and say, “Listen, I have to fire you because I like you. Can we go out?” So it worked out well. AT GATEWAY, MY WIFE AND I don’t feel any tension being an interracial couple. We never feel like people treat us differently. Pastor Robert has really done a great job cultivating an environment where racism and prejudice aren’t an issue. We just love all people. And I feel blessed that the Lord has allowed me to pastor and lead people, young and

old, of all different races and help be a part of race reconciliation in this region. I’m also connected with several other churches, and it’s been great to have conversations with them about what we do at Gateway. It may look different at their churches, but the principles transfer. I (NOT SO) SECRETLY WANT TO BE AN ACTOR. I love the performing arts. My wife and I are always at Bass Hall or the Dallas Arts Center. We both love to go to the symphony or some type of production or concert. I played the violin and the piano as a kid, so I think that’s why I have an appreciation for symphonies and the performing arts. MY MOTHER WAS A FANTASTIC WOMAN, and she was instrumental in developing humility in my life. One of my favorite stories was when my mother called me up to do a prophetic dance in front of the church when I was a teenager. I’ve never recovered. But when I worked in children’s ministry, I was in a place where you do what you have to do to reach kids. So I’ve been known to dress up in costumes. Part of it is passion for performing arts, and part of it is just being able to laugh at myself. I PLAYED COLLEGE FOOTBALL, and in my last semester in college, when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I worked as

NATURE IS REALLY REFRESHING TO ME. I had hip surgery earlier this year, and I couldn’t walk or go outside or do much of anything for about six weeks. And I remember going outside after the six weeks and being able to walk around the park. I felt like I could breathe again. Creation reminds me of my beautiful Creator. I’M AN INTROVERT. And my wife is definitely an extrovert. I think it has to do with where we are fueled. People often think because of my personality that I’ve got to be an extrovert because I talk to everybody. But I’m refueled by alone time. It’s really crucial. I love to read books. I love to go to movies by myself. I love to go out to eat by myself. I love to walk around the park. I could literally spend hours upon hours just by myself.
