WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE RECENTLY, DEBBIE AND I SAW A SIGN THAT
caught our attention. It said, “The Perfect Size Church.” I thought, what would be the perfect size church? If it’s a certain number of people, then what do you do when you get that many people? There’s nothing in Scripture that tells us what the perfect size church is, but I realize many people believe big churches are just too big. They have the conception that a big church is impersonal, and it’s hard to get to
know people. That is until they come, get plugged in, and build relationships. Over the years, I’ve heard so many stories about people who’ve been through difficult circumstances, and again and again, this is what they say: “The way the Gateway family rallied around me and helped me through this time was phenomenal!” This is just one of the many reasons I think being big gives us more opportunities to serve and help others. As we start a new year, we’re making a change to help make connecting with others and building relationships even easier. Ministry events and classes will only take place on certain nights during the week, giving you the opportunity to get involved in a class or a Gateway Group and spend more time with your family. If you’ve ever been overwhelmed by all we offer, we understand. It’s why we’ve made this change to simplify your choices while you find your place at Gateway. This issue of Gateway Life is filled with stories about people just like you
who have been impacted by our mission to help each person at Gateway believe in Jesus, belong to family, become a follower, and build God’s kingdom. You’ll also read the inspiring testimony of one woman who found hope through Gateway’s Single Parent Grant Program (page 8). And you won’t want to miss our new feature, “Ask a Pastor” (page 11). I believe this new season of simplification will not only help you connect with and minister to others, it will help you grow in your faith. I’m so excited to see all the new things God is going to do in our lives this year!

“I was lost
when someone invited me to Gateway a few weeks ago—coming was the best decision of my life! I was so comfortable and everyone was so welcoming. Now I know that we all have a story that ends; but with God, life is everlasting and never ends. Gateway has been my gateway back to God.” Kayla Cantu | via Facebook
MEANWHILE AT GATEWAY
26,900 seats were booked for Chasing Lights performances at the Southlake Campus within the first 24 hours reservations were made available. • For each performance of Chasing Lights, 60 stage crew and technical arts staff operated the show behind the scenes. • 50,000 candles
were ordered for our annual Christmas Candlelight Services. • In November, 40 Men’s Brigade guys volunteered a combined 160 hours of service. They visited 5 homes and completed 15 home projects for single women and widows. • 1,956 shoeboxes were collected across all campuses for Operation Christmas Child. • At Gateway’s Men’s Night, approximately 12,000 helpings of BBQ were served to hungry guys!

“My family sponsors a child in Colombia, but I woke up this morning with a desire to sponsor another child in the hope of getting to meet them while in El Salvador on a ministry trip. Earlier today, I sponsored Genesis and got to meet her. She’s been waiting for someone to sponsor her for almost a year, and today, I got to shower her with gifts, and my entire family got to FaceTime with her and tell her that we love her and that Jesus does too. She’s a beautiful 10-year-old, and I can’t wait to see what plans God has for her. This is what hope looks like.”

JEREMIAH BOWEN “It’s important to me to make the most of my time with the kids. I work as an electrician and my job is an hour away, so at the end of the day I’ll have worked 10 hours and driven two. It’s a lot of time away from my family. My wife has been reading a lot about child psychology, and she read that it doesn’t take hours to make a connection with your kids. Just 15 minutes face-to-face can be impactful. So I always spend that time reiterating value and identity to them and making sure they know I love them. My daughter will come up to me and say, ‘Daddy, I’m a princess,’ and I’ll say, ‘Yes, you are!’”

HAROLD SANDERS “They call me Cowboy because I always wear a cowboy hat. I got the nickname back in 2006 when I started coming to Shady Grove Church. They would send a van to pick up some homeless people and I’m the only one still coming. I fell away for a few years, but in 2014, after I lost my leg due to a blood clot, I decided to come back and it was Gateway. Around that same time, I moved into an adult foster care program. It’s not the best situation but with my pension from my time in the Army, it’s about the best I can do. I trust God, and I know He’s going to work this out just like He always does. I’m not perfect, and sometimes I’ll go off down this-a-way and I’ll feel God pulling me back on track.”

It really gives me pause to think, quietly come into God’s presence, and ask Him where I need to be obedient in my life in an area where I have been failing to do so. It makes growing in my relationship with God so much more intimate and brings the glory back to Him.”
“I don’t talk about it much, but it’s been almost four years since an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) burst in my brain. I had a surgery to remove it. I remember saying goodbye to my parents before going into the operating room wondering if they were going to be okay if I died. I made it through, but the whole right side of my body wouldn’t function correctly. I had to relearn how to do everything. So when auditions came up for Truthical in 2014, I wanted to be a part of a show again, but I was nervous because I wasn’t sure I would be able to do it. However, I made the production! It wasn’t easy, but when show weekend came, I was able to perform each dance number perfectly. I’ve been in two shows since, and I’ve helped out with makeup backstage as well. I’m still recovering though. I don’t know where God will take me with all that’s happened, but I’ve come a long way from where I was, and I know He has a plan for me.”

GRIT GRACE AND
How Gateway’s Single Parents Grant Program helped change Allison Hunter’s life.
BY Daniel Hopkins
LLISON HUNTER FILLED OUT the housing application for a small efficiency apartment on the campus at Texas Women’s University (twu). She lied, writing down that her two small children would only be with her one weekend every month, but as soon as her application was approved, she and her kids moved into their new full-time home. Enrolling in college was a testament to Allison’s grit and desire to better her family’s circumstances, despite what she’d lived through up to this point. However, her grit was about to run out. She was on the verge of quitting—a decision that would keep her family in poverty for years to come—but then she found out about Gateway’s Single Parents Grant Program. Allison grew up in Houston, and when her parents split up, she moved to Dallas/Fort Worth to live with her father, which is when she met her first husband. “I was 18, and he was 16,” she says. “It was completely dysfunctional. He was a decent guy when he was sober, but he became an abusive drug addict.” She took her daughter and moved on, meeting another man and becoming pregnant with a son along the way. The relationship didn’t work out, but she married another man—a good guy, considering the men she’d been with—but soon after, their marriage fell apart. Destitute and homeless, Allison believed there had to be a better life out there. “I identified myself through my relationships with men, and my life was chaotic,” she says. “There were a couple of times I had to live in a car while I looked for a place to
live.” She found Section 8 housing in Watauga, but after a few months, a drive-by shooting had her looking for other options. That’s when she found the apartment at TWU, where she was attending school. As she studied to earn her nursing degree, she worked sporadic hours as a home healthcare nurse. Though she made some money, it wasn’t enough. “I would make a box of hamburger helper and feed the kids for a few nights,” she says.
“IT WAS AMAZING BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW PEOPLE WOULD COME ALONGSIDE ME LIKE THIS.” But when groceries were scarce, she called 211, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission helpline, which directed her to resources for those living in poverty. They are especially helpful for single parents. During one phone call, she learned Gateway had a weekly dinner for

didn’t have, but through the grant program, she gave her life to the Lord. Allison graduated, received her teaching certificate, and taught for five years before she earned her master’s degree and became a school counselor for three years. Now, she’s using her same grit to take on a new venture. She’s working on her doctorate degree at Texas Christian University with a full scholarship. In addition, she’s on the board for the Single Parents Grant Program, teaches an Equip class, single parent families. When they got there, she couldn’t and is celebrating 10 years of marriage with her husband, believe what she saw. “They had real food!” she says. “Not Tracey, this year. just expired food.” She and her kids returned every week “It’s a miracle how God has restored my life,” she says. for a few months, and she met Pastor Samantha Golden “When I teach my Equip class, my message is always that who oversaw Gateway Single Parents. God is faithful in every season. It’s not always going to look She confided in Samantha that after 10 years in school, how we want it to, but we can trust Him.” GL and only one semester left to go, she was ready to throw in the towel and find a job so she could pay her bills. “I was just done,” she says. “My car was about to be repossessed, Allison Hunter, and I was tired of living in that tiny apartment at TWU. I one of the many was sacrificing time with my kids.” Samantha set up a meetlives changed by Gateway's Single ing with her and when Allison arrived, she expected to be Parent Grant scolded for her decision to quit. Program But instead, Samantha offered her unexpected hope and grace in the form of a grant that would help her finish school. Not only that, Gateway helped Allison find a better housing situation, helped with food and utilities, and when her car was repossessed, Gateway’s car donation ministry provided her with a van. “It was amazing because I didn’t know people would come alongside me like this,” she says. “They absolutely saved my life.” Hope was a luxury she

3. Pray for and speak blessings over your offender. This is not only for the other person’s benefit, but for your own emotional healing as well. It requires help from the Holy Spirit, because in ourselves, we don’t want to bless those who have hurt us..
ASK A PASTOR GATEWAY PASTORS ANSWER YOUR DIFFICULT QUESTIONS
I’ve been trying to forgive my dad for what he did to my family, but sometimes I’m still angry at him, and sometimes I feel love for him. How do I forgive him completely?
T
he fact that you desire to forgive him is a powerful sign the Lord is working in your heart. But there are two issues involved. The first is about justice—our sense that a person needs to pay for what he/she has done. The second issue is the emotional hurt and ongoing wound that keeps our thoughts bound to the negative and allows the hurt to control us. Here are three steps, which unfortunately I learned the hard way, to help you forgive someone who hurt you and to be totally healed from it. 1. Acknowledge the “payback” ( justice) belongs only to the Lord. He is the only one who sees all sides of a situation and has the perfect perspective. This is a lordship issue, and it’s a vertical conversation between you and the Lord that might sound like this: Lord, I give the demand for justice into Your hands. I know Your Word says, “Vengeance belongs to the Lord, He will repay” (Romans 12:19). Letting the Lord take control is the easiest step. This is not a situation in which the victim pays and the perpetrator gets off. Quite the opposite! It is an appeal for God to redeem the situation. 2. Choose to forgive the person who wounded you (and others). Most of us have learned to pray this forgiveness prayer: “God, I choose to forgive this person.” Sometimes this can actually become a horizontal conversation—telling the person directly or in writing that we have been wounded, but we choose to forgive. Of course, the kingdom objective to forgiveness is reconciliation. The ultimate desire is for this relationship to be restored to some level and the enemy would not gain the advantage.
Early in my first pastoral job, an older man verbally assaulted me in public. As he was walking out of our meeting, he was spewing insults and criticism (some of which had some validity). Honestly, I didn’t feel the sting from his words— until about the third day. Then I began to replay them in my head and an offense began to rise up in my heart. I was dutifully exercising the first two steps outlined above, but the black cloud persisted. Then I cried out to the Lord, and He taught me this third step. In my mind’s eye I saw a knife in my arm, and the Lord said, “What are you going to do about that?” I pulled it out and saw a wound. He said, “What are you going to do about it?” Immediately, I saw gauze wrapped around the arm to stop the bleeding. As I was seeing this, I heard Him say, “Bless those that curse you; pray for those that spitefully use you,” (Matthew 5:44). Then He explained, “When you choose to forgive, you are pulling the knife out; but your healing comes when you begin to bless and pray for those that wound you.” I did this out of obedience and, over time, experienced a supernatural healing in my heart with love and compassion for the offender. Truly forgiving someone takes courage and faith, but if you will let God be the judge, determine to forgive, then begin to bless the offender, God will heal your wound. I encourage you to pray for your father and ask God to pour out blessing upon him. You will experience healing and increasing love for him. Ultimately, we can’t control what others do, but by the Holy Spirit’s help, we can control its negative impact upon us. GL Pastor Kerry Wood is the pastor of Gateway Equip at the Southlake Campus and is an adjunct professor at The King’s University.

GATEWAY’S MISSION AS SEEN IN THE LIVES OF EVERYDAY PEOPLE by Daniel Hopkins & Katie Smith
O
at Gateway believe in Jesus, belong to family, become a follower, and build God’s kingdom. This mission is something we see in the lives of our members every day, and accomplishing it isn’t just a one-time thing—it’s a process that continues throughout the life of a believer. Here are some examples of Gateway people, living out the mission of Gateway Church. UR MISSION IS TO HELP EACH PERSON
Believe in Jesus ERIC RODRIGUEZ Eric Rodriguez grew up in a Christian home. He went to church every week, but his heart wasn’t in it. Eventually, he ended up attending a Bible school only to find out it wasn’t what he expected. “I didn’t know what I believed, and I left school identifying as an agnostic,” Eric says. Although still playing the part of the religious, good Christian, Eric secretly didn’t want to be a part of the Church. So when a friend invited him to a Gateway Young Adults service a few months later, he was reluctant to go, but he didn’t want to let his friend down. “The message that night was called ‘How Faith Works’ and I remember sitting there thinking, What is this? Why have I not ever heard of this before?” Eric says. “It seemed brand new.” Eric continued to attend Gateway, and he also started listening to archived messages throughout the week. Then, on September 3, 2013, while listening to a message at work, Eric really gave his life to the Lord. “I responded to the altar call at my desk. And everything changed.” Eric now works for the Gateway Café and is actively involved in Gateway Performing Arts as well.

Belong to family EVELYN BAEZ As Evelyn Baez was wheeled into the operating room to have a C-section, Pastor Samantha Golden walked alongside her. Evelyn didn’t have family in Texas, but the entire waiting room was filled with people who came to welcome her child into the world. As a single mom who was new to Texas, the Single Parent Family Ministry became her family. “I remember starting to attend and the whole group was so welcoming. They took me in immediately,” Evelyn says. During her pregnancy, doctors told her they couldn’t find a heartbeat, but they did find four tumors. She immediately went to the Healing Ministry at Gateway and sought out her Single Parent Families friends for support. Nine weeks later, after much prayer and many visits to the Healing Rooms, doctors found a heartbeat. It was truly a miracle, and Evelyn continued through the rest of her complicated pregnancy relying on friends and prayer. And when she finally went to deliver her son, people were there still. “I never felt alone. When I needed it, someone was there to walk with me through the storm,” Evelyn says. “No matter where I am in life, there is a place for me here.”
Become a follower CHAD LEADER In Chad Leader’s senior year of high school in California, he was introduced to heroin and methamphetamines. He used them for 20 years and spent a total of 10 years in prison for drug-related charges. Kelly, who he would later marry, was a drug dealer, but after a few years, they decided to move to Texas to get out of that lifestyle. Kelly’s dad, a member of the Gateway NRH Campus, brought them to church where they gave their lives to Christ. However,
14 JANUARY 2017
Chad had some unfinished business in California. “Leaving California to move to Texas was a parole violation,” he says. “So I knew I had to go back and turn myself in and serve the mandatory one-year sentence.” Chad and Kelly got their finances in order so she would make it through the year, and he said his goodbyes. When he turned himself in, he had recommendation letters from several Gateway pastors, and when the judge saw them, he let Chad go free. Now, Chad and Kelly are heavily involved at the Grand Prairie Campus, where he serves as the building coordinator. “I do ministry every day with my crew,” he says. “I oversee 13 people and I get to pour into them and share my story with them. I used to be timid and embarrassed to tell people about my past, but now I realize that God wants me to use my story to help others.”
Build God’s kingdom MARK O’BRIANT When Mark O’Briant, a business man and longtime Gateway member, serves at the Dallas Campus each week, he rarely enters the building. Instead, he chooses to serve as a parking lot attendant, and he’s become an integral part of the campus. “I love working in the parking lot because of the people I get to talk to,” he says. “They might be intimidated by the pastors and deacons wearing suits inside the building, but they’ll talk to me—I’m just the parking lot guy.” This unassuming role has given him the opportunity to minister to people in a unique way. One weekend, a young man struggling with addiction pulled into the parking lot. Before he ever stepped foot in the door, Mark had already prayed with him. Now, the young man is plugged into Gateway, and it all started with the initial connection with Mark. “When you’re outside, you see people in a different way,” he says. “I remember helping a lady with a disability who was struggling to get out of her car. It takes her 10 to 15 minutes to get from her car to the door and I was able to walk with her through that small struggle. It was an honor for me, and that’s why I love to serve out in the parking lot.” GL For more information on Gateway’s mission, visit mission.gatewaypeople.com.
SONG STORY
Michael Jr., Mark Harris, Mary Beth Miller, and Erik Snodgrass’s
AS LONG AS I’M BREATHING by Daniel Hopkins
IT’S HARD FOR MICHAEL JR. TO NOT BE
He jokes even when he’s talking about a song idea he had that, with the help of Mark Harris, Mary Beth Miller, and Erik Snodgrass, turned into a beautifully bittersweet song about worshipping God despite our circumstances. “I am sure you’ve never met a human that knows less about music than I do,” he says. “My wife will have the radio on, and I’ll ask her if this is Michael Jackson, and she’ll say, ‘No, it’s Kari Jobe.’” The song came to him nearly a decade ago when he and his family lived in Los Angeles and God called them to change churches. The music at the old church was soulful with a gospel feel. Michael Jr. couldn’t put his finger on it, but he knew it was easy to worship to. However, when they moved to a new church, he struggled with the music. “God used that situation to illustrate how important it is to worship Him even when I don’t like the music,” he says. “Can I worship God when the music isn’t right? What about when the music of life isn’t right? The answer to both is yes! Even if you bring out bagpipes.” FUNNY.
This sparked an idea for a song, and he did the only thing that made sense—he shared the idea with a few singer-songwriters he knew, but nothing ever materialized. Then several years later, he ran into Pastor Mark Harris at a party. He casually brought up his song idea. “The only words it has is ‘I will worship,’” he told Mark. “‘It doesn’t have a melody or hook.’” While the idea was missing a lot of essential parts, what it did have was an arrangement. He told Mark the song would start with a woman singing acapella, then one by one different instruments come in setting up a musical foundation. Michael Jr. thought of these instruments as the elements in the singer’s life. “The drums represent a house, the guitar represents a husband, the piano represents children, and the bass represents community and health,” says Michael. “When they reach a crescendo, she’s singing the words, ‘I will worship.’” Then one by one, the instruments fade out and these elements disappear. However, the singer still sings, “I will worship.”
Mark mulled the idea over in his head for a few seconds and said, “We should meet about this.” A few days later, Michael Jr. walked into Mark’s office and he was surprised to see Mary Beth Miller and Erik Snodgrass there to help. The fact that they took him seriously—an uncommon event in the life of a comedian—spoke volumes to him. The four of them began bouncing lyrics and melodies around until they landed on a final product that represents the original idea well. Now that the song has been written and performed (by Anna Byrd at the 2016 Gateway Conference), Michael feels a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. “When God gave me this song, I thought it was ridiculous and I didn’t think anyone would take me seriously,” he says. “But the idea of the song was so beautiful, it had to be from God—I could never take credit for it.” GL “As Long as I’m Breathing” is on Created To Be: Songs from Gateway Devotions, available at the Gateway Bookstore and on iTunes.

MARKETPLACE MINISTRY 10 ways to be a light in your workplace
D
ID YOU KNOW YOU’RE A MINISTER?
You don’t need to be licensed and employed by a church to do the work of the ministry. In fact, Paul makes it clear in 2 Corinthians 5:17–19 (NLT) that “God has given us the task of reconciling people to him.” Essentially, we are all ministers. For many of us it comes naturally, yet for others it doesn’t. And oftentimes the most difficult place to minister is the workplace; however, Jesus shows us throughout Scripture that everywhere we go is an opportunity to minister. There are so many ways we can bring the love and light of Jesus into the workplace. Here are 10 tips to help you get started in your marketplace ministry! 1 JOIN IN. God may already be working in the hearts of those around you. Pray and ask God how you can join in on what He’s already doing.
GET TO KNOW PEOPLE. Find out what needs or difficulties people are experiencing, and pray about how you might help them. 2
3
IMAGINE. If Jesus were to walk through
your workplace, what would His mindset be? Who would He encourage? What would He do? Take some time to ask the Lord what He would have you do in your workplace this week. Who can you pray for this week? Praying for your coworkers and leadership will make your spirit more sensitive to how you can minister to them in the future. 4
PRAY.
The Bible says we should work as if we’re working for the Lord and respect and honor those in authority (Colossians 3:23–24; Romans 13:1–7; 1 Peter 2:13–20; Hebrews 13:17). This includes your boss, no matter who they are. How can you honor your boss this week? 5
HONOR.
BE PRESENT. Sometimes, when deadlines loom and the workload is overwhelming, it can be difficult to stop and be fully present with someone. But one of the biggest ways we can be like Jesus is by giving people our full attention. 6
7
and then truly listen. Sometimes listening can be more effective than talking. 8 CHOOSE PEOPLE ABOVE ISSUES. When issues arise, remember your relationship with those around you is more important than any problem. Every person is loved by God, and no problem should interfere with how we treat people. 9 BE KIND. Let your words always be filled with kindness and grace. In a world where kindness isn’t the norm, strive to be different and show the love of Jesus in all of your conversations. But don’t be fake—people can usually spot insincerity. 10 SHIFT YOUR PERSPECTIVE. Business is ministry when you do it for the Lord. Just because you’re not in full-time ministry working at a church, doesn’t mean your job isn’t as important to the kingdom of God. Think about how your job can help others and steward God’s creation. The Waitress
T
by KATIE SMITH
he Tony-nominated musical Waitress, based on a 2007 indie film with the same name, hit Broadway in April of 2016 and filled its hallowed streets with smells of pie and the sweet lilting voice of lead actress, Jessie Mueller. Her performance of Jenna, a small town–diner waitress (with a skill for baking unique pies) stuck in an abusive marriage, is heart-wrenching and show-stopping. Early on, Jenna learns she’s pregnant, and the audience is taken on an emotional, sometimes hilarious, journey as she makes plans and mistakes. In one scene, after a particularly harsh fight with her husband, Jenna comes to grips with her unexpected, unwanted pregnancy and who she has become in recent years with the song, “She Used to Be Mine.” She sings these words: “It’s not simple to say / that most days / I don’t recognize me. / With these shoes and this apron / that place and its patrons / that have taken more / than I gave them.” Her job, her marriage, her relationships, and just about everything else in her life caused her to become someone she didn’t recognize—someone who was stuck and scared. Later in the song she sings, “Sometimes life just slips in through a back door / and carves out a person / and makes you believe it’s all true.” But Jenna decides to fight—for her own sake as well as her child’s— against the disappearance of her true self. It’s sad and beautiful
18 JANUARY 2017
Have you ever woken up one day and said to yourself, How did I get here? It happens to the best of us. The enemy slipped lie after lie into our hearts and made us believe they’re all true, carving us into a shell of who we used to be. We can spend weeks, months, or even years in autopilot, not realizing we’re operating out of less than God intended. Whether 2016 was a great year or a year of sorrow, frustration, or difficulty, take a page out of Jenna’s book. It’s time to wake up. Use the new year as an opportunity to begin anew—to realize you’re never going to be the same, learn from your mistakes and the hard times, rekindle what needs to be rekindled, and throw out the rest. Take some time this month to bring your life into focus with God’s Word. Breathe fresh air and heal. Begin 2017 with a fresh heart, and you never know what new thing God may birth in your life. GL

BRAD STAHL THERE’S A TREASURE IN EVERYONE. I love the opportunity to identify it, develop it, and give people an opportunity to learn and grow in their ability to serve others with their gifts and talents. MY LIFE IS FULL OF EMBARRASSING MOMENTS. One time while preaching at a church after a really long and exhausting week, I went to walk down the platform stairs, but I missed a step and fell flat on my face. I was so tired at the time, I considered just lying there. Meanwhile, the crowd didn’t move or react. They thought I was trying to make a dramatic illustration. I LOVE THE WATER. Growing up, I loved watching movies or shows that involved water, and I always tried to test my limits underwater. I never grew out of it—I even have pictures of sailboats in my office now! I got my scuba license in Florida, and the instructors told me I couldn’t record how deep I dove in my logbook because it wasn’t really allowed. But they knew I was comfortable in the water so they let me explore underwater caverns. I got a chance to explore a sunken Civil War ship a couple years later too. I USED TO BE AN ACTOR. My first five years in ministry were spent traveling with a drama ministry called the New Life Drama Company. It was during these early years of ministry when I met my wife, heard God’s call to pastoral ministry, and learned to serve people. The past few years, when the Gateway Christmas production came around, I would think about auditioning, but my schedule never allowed it. This past year, I was invited to try out—they were looking for an “old man”—and I ended up with one of the lead roles! So I dusted off my theater experience and joined a whole team of talented people for the production. For more about our Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.
