W e l come

WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE SUMMER IS HERE AND IN FULL SWING. This is the month we celebrate our independence by blowing up fireworks and painting the sky with bright and beautiful colors of fire. In years past, we have always gone to the lake to watch fireworks because they look so much more vibrant reflected off the water. One year we were at my aunt and uncle’s lake house, and my brother James, my cousin Jacob, and I were responsible for putting on a fireworks show from the boat dock as the whole family sat on the porch. We had found an old PVC pipe that was capped off at one end and open

on the other, and we dropped bottle rockets down into the pipe after lighting them and shot them into the sky above the lake. After a while, the bottom of the pipe got hot and the cap melted off. We dropped a bottle rocket down the pipe and it stuck in the ground, pointing directly toward the house and my entire family. The only thing I had time to do was yell, “Watch out!” and then pray for the best. It headed right for the crowd of people but miraculously began to ascend right before reaching everyone and then blew up about 20 feet above the house. My aunt and uncle thanked God that we didn’t burn down their house that day. I’ve spent many July fourths celebrating with fun activities, but this year will be very different for me. I recently returned from a ministry trip

to Cuba, and it did something in me that was profound and meaningful. I watched as the people of this amazing church gathered in a small home and stood for hours to be able to worship God without air conditioning or any of the other comforts that we have become accustomed to. As I watched them worship, I was reminded that our true freedom comes from Christ alone and no man can take it from us. One of my favorite stories in this issue of Gateway Life is about how Jim Mayher turned to Jesus and found freedom and restoration for his marriage (page 14). You’ll love the miraculous story of how your Heart for the Kingdom giving is making big things happen in Frisco (page 12). And you’ll be inspired by the article about Gateway’s upcoming prayer series and 40-day prayer challenge (page 10). As you and your family celebrate Independence Day this year, I want to encourage you to remember that we have a lot to be grateful for, but that none of those things are greater than the freedom that we have been given through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

IN RESPONSE TO GATEWAY WORSHIP’S VOICES

I’VE LISTENED TO PASTOR ROBERT FOR YEARS.

In March of 2013, I was staying with my brother as he was dying of cancer. He was sleeping on the couch and woke up when I turned The Blessed Life television program on. My brother had never been baptized, but when the program finished, he looked at me and said, ‘Sis, I need that. I need to be baptized.’ I told him that I agreed and would make sure it got done. We had my mom’s pastor come over a week later to spend some time with my brother and baptize him. When I saw my brother the next week, he was more at peace despite the incredible pain he was in. Later that week, he went to be with the Lord. As incredibly painful as it was to lose my only sibling, I knew beyond a doubt that he was at home with the Lord.

DO YOU HAVE ANY HIDDEN TALENTS? I am awesome at singing dorkydad songs that embarrass my kids. MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? When I was a teacher, I had to call a parent about their child who was misbehaving. While the phone was ringing I was also thinking I needed to call my wife, so when the child’s mother picked up the phone, my first words were: “Hey Sweetie!” When I heard the shocked, “um … helllooo,” I was mortified. My first instinct was to quickly hang up the phone, but I swallowed my pride and tried to explain I was thinking about calling my wife while making this call. Thankfully she was gracious, but to this day, I never multitask while making phone calls. FAVORITE WAY TO RELAX? Off-road biking and working out are huge stress relievers for me. I recharge when I can be alone with my wife anywhere, doing anything. WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? I wanted to be a brain surgeon. WHAT IS SOMETHING NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT YOU? I was an English teacher in Taiwan for a year, and my favorite thing to do there was go surfing on the Taiwanese coast. For more about Gateway pastors and staff, visit staff.gatewaypeople.com.

Four weeks ago, I decided to pursue a career path I’ve always wanted, and I felt like the Lord told me He would provide a job and a car this month. I do not believe it is a coincidence that I received a car and a job interview on the same day! He is so faithful and cares deeply about our hearts’ desires!” Christin Warren | via Facebook

“I STEPPED OUT OF THE MORNING SESSION and decided to grab a coffee. A few people behind me in line, there was a lady leaning on her cane talking about wanting a vanilla latte. I felt the Lord nudging me to buy her coffee so I said, ‘Could I buy you that vanilla latte? I would love to bless you this morning.’ She couldn’t even talk she was crying so hard. I gave her a big hug, and then she stepped out of line to wait for her coffee. When I brought it to her, she was still crying. I was thinking, It’s just coffee ... I wonder what’s going on. Through her tears, she said, ‘I never receive from people. I am always meeting others’ needs, and when you said you wanted to buy me coffee, all the pain in my back left. Now I can walk and stand without my cane!’ She started bouncing up and down. We walked back into the arena together, and she carried her cane. I ran into her later on, and she was still free from any pain! Turns out, she and her daughter came to the conference all the way from South Carolina.” Katie McCombs | via email

FIRE

GATEWAY ’S NEW P RAYER SE AND HOW RIES YOU CAN GET INVO LVED.

WE KNOW WE’RE SUPPOSED TO PRAY … BUT WHY? Do our prayers really make a difference? And is there a “right” way to pray? Prayer can be confusing for many people. And when we do pray, we often get bored and distracted, or we feel like what we’re praying about is too trivial. Then there are the times we experience disappointment and discouragement, because it feels like God’s not responding. We all have ups and downs with prayer. Although prayer feels abstract and complex, it’s actually quite simple—we have an all access pass to God! Sometimes it’s hard to believe that He actually wants us to go to Him with our thoughts, feelings, worries, and needs. He wants to hear from us every day, and He wants to speak to us every day. At its essence, prayer is simply heart-to-heart communication 10  JULY 2016

between God and us. And like a tiny spark that ignites a fire, revolutionary prayer begins with a conversation. When we bow our heads or fall to our knees in prayer, we’re partnering with God as He shapes nations, heals marriages, or simply helps us make it through a tough day without falling apart. Jesus promises that when we ask, we will receive (Matthew 7:7) and that we can ask for anything, and if we have faith, we will receive it (Matthew 21:22). So how can we contend with those promises? How do we pray those kinds of prayers? This summer at Gateway, we’re engaging in a prayer revolution as we discover how and why we should pray. Here is how you can learn about and experience the power of prayer in your own life.

40-DAY PRAYER CHALLENGE July 4–August 12

You and a partner. Five minutes a day. That’s it. Super simple, yet immensely powerful. Jesus said: “If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you. For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them” (Matthew 18:19–20). So here’s the challenge: 1. Choose a friend, family member, or spouse to join with you in this commitment. 2. Before you begin the prayer challenge, visit powerofprayer.gatewaypeople.com and fill out the pre-challenge survey. (This is not mandatory, but it will give you a great before and after picture.) 3. Spend five minutes a day for 40 days praying with that

person. Express thankfulness, pray about concerns, speak God’s Word over each other, and expect to see God move. 4. At the end of the 40 days, visit powerofprayer.gatewaypeople.com again and complete the post-challenge survey. Prayer is the most powerful force on the planet because it connects us to God. In the amount of time it takes to brush your teeth and comb your hair, your life can change forever.

THE POWER OF PRAYER A GATEWAY SERIES WEEKEND SERVICES | JULY 9–AUGUST 7

Whether you’re struggling in your prayer life, an experienced prayer warrior, or unsure what a prayer life means, this series will encourage and inspire you. You won’t want to miss a single weekend!

FEATURING

Dr. Henry Cloud Blynda Lane Mark Jobe Jimmy Evans Tim Ross powerofprayer.gatewaypeople.com

WHO SHOULD I CHOOSE AS MY PRAYER PARTNER? Choose someone you can trust and be open with. You also want to make sure you have access to them (whether in person or by phone) for at least five minutes a day. Anyone is fair game: a spouse, a family member, a good friend, a coworker, a girlfriend/boyfriend, or a mentor.

WHAT DO WE DO? Take turns thanking God, asking God for His help or provision in certain areas, or praying God’s Word over each other. If you want to, you can choose different friends/family members, church leaders, political figures, or nations to pray for each week.

SPECIAL BUNDLE PRICE $15 Available at the Gateway Bookstore

WHAT IF IT’S AWKWARD? Don’t worry about it! If you’re not used to it, praying with someone can be awkward at first, but continue to focus on God and enjoy your time connecting with that person. You’ll quickly start to feel comfortable praying together. GL

“Each campus has a miracle story. This is ours.” – Pastor Randy Cochran

12  JULY 2016

The Gateway Frisco Campus staff looks on as Campus Pastor Randy Cochran drives a stake into the ground on the edge of the adjacent property. The land he is surveying with these stakes has been highly sought after but unavailable for many years. The lack of space at the Frisco Campus has become a bit of a struggle. Because the campus was a church building adopted by Gateway in 2010, it does not have some of the things the other campuses do, like ample parking or classrooms or even a full Gateway Café. On weekends, cars fill the parking lot and the surrounding streets. And with minimal overflow space, people sit in the Lobby to watch the service. Expansion of the Frisco Campus has been on the Heart for the Kingdom Initiative list for several years, but progress has been slow. The elders looked at the land next door, but it wasn’t for sale, even after they made multiple inquiries. In August 2014, Randy felt God was prompting him to do something a little different. He was reminded of his brother, a pastor in Georgia, who stuck a stick in the ground on a piece of land and the Lord provided that land for his church. “I really felt like God was telling me to make a similar declarative move,” Randy says, “to drive a stake into the ground and pray for the land instead of passively waiting for a decision.” It would be a true miracle for the land to be theirs, and he decided obedience was the way to go. Before the next Frisco Campus staff meeting, Randy went to Home Depot to purchase two wooden stakes. He wrote “Wait trustfully, walk confidently, and watch expectantly” on one

“THE TREASURE IS THE PEOPLE, NOT THE LAND. IT’S ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT THE PEOPLE.”

stake and “I believe” on another stake, having faith that God would do a miracle and provide the land, and therefore the opportunity, to expand the Frisco Campus. Randy took the campus staff outside, and as he put the stakes in the ground next to the land, he explained what he felt the Lord had said. Over the next year, men’s groups and deacons and staff members could be seen praying next to those stakes on a weekly basis. In November of 2015, the Frisco Campus held a vision night, and amidst food trucks, picnic tables, worship, and altar ministry, Randy shared the vision the Lord gave him, and with blank stakes lying on all over the platform, he encouraged the congregation to take a stake and stand in prayer and faith for the neighboring land. Not long before the Frisco Campus vision night, the land had become available and Gateway placed an offer on the property. But we were outbid by one of the large corporations who want to attend. Since Gateway Frisco opened in 2010, also vying for the land. Discouraged and convinced it was the city’s population has increased approximately 23%. over, Randy had a conversation with his boss, Pastor Todd The city is expected to double in size again (to 320,000) Lane. “I remember he looked at me and said, ‘Yeah, that at buildout, and now the Frisco Campus can grow with it. doesn’t look good … but we’re the only ones with stakes in the “The day I heard we closed on the land, I thought I would ground,’” Randy says. Take a Knee J I M M AY H E R ’ S S T O R Y O F A D D I C T I O N , P A I N , A N D R E C O N C I L I AT I O N by DANIEL HOPKINS

THE MOST IMPORTANT MOMENT IN JIM MAYHER’S LIFE HAPPENED

when he got down on one knee and asked his wife, Marlaine, a question he’ll never forget. It wasn’t the proposal you might expect: “If you and Jesus will have me, I want to come home,” he said. While he and his wife had been married for 11 years (almost two of which they spent separated until that moment), he had never had a relationship with Jesus. That was about to change, along with so many other things in his life. Jim was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, where his father—a recovering alcoholic—ran a halfway house. As a teenager, Jim began falling into patterns that his father had worked hard to avoid. “I started smoking pot and drinking when I was 14,” he says. “When I was 16, my dad asked me 10 questions that were warning signs for alcoholism. I answered yes to 8.” Despite his father’s warnings, Jim continued to drink, smoke pot, and experiment with other drugs, increasingly as time went on. He describes his lifestyle back then as that of a functioning alcoholic—one who masks their heavy drinking with the appearance of a normal, successful life. In Jim’s case, it worked for quite a while. He moved to Tacoma, Washington, to take a job in the timeshare industry. Jim met Marlaine when she came to work for him in the summer of 1980. They were married and a few years later found out they had a baby on the way. While Jim’s appearance of success was better than ever, on the inside things were falling apart.

“I was a full-blown alcoholic with blackouts three or four nights a week,” he says. “I didn’t think I had a problem with marijuana, but when my son needed a dentist appointment or a new pair of sneakers, I didn’t have the money. But I always had money for pot.” In the late ‘80s, Jim’s work brought his family to Bedford, Texas; he hoped things would improve in both areas of his life. However, they only got worse. After a while, Marlaine moved out—it was the third time she’d left him—and Jim lost hope. “The marriage problems were a result of my selfishness and ego.” He wasn’t willing to change, and so the separation went on for almost two years.

“I WAS A FULLBLOWN ALCOHOLIC WITH BLACKOUTS THREE OR FOUR NIGHTS A WEEK.”

“ W E D E LV E D INTO THE DEEP END OF COUNSELING, MENTORING,AND MARRIAGE CLASSES.”

“On March 5, 1993, I got a call from a friend who offered me an opportunity to have the most lecherous weekend of debauchery you can imagine,” he says. “I was broke, my business was failing, my car was going to be repossessed, my wife had left me, so I thought I might as well empty out the business account and spend it at the bar.” As he was making his plan, another thought came to him out of nowhere. He had lived on the fence too long. He needed to either get serious about being a wild man or get serious about being a husband and a father. He could no longer occupy the space in between. He drove to Marlaine’s apartment, got down on one knee, and asked for another chance. She prayed about it and the Lord told her, “I took you just the way you were. You take him just the way he is, and trust Me.” Jim dedicated his life to Jesus that day, and he was instantly free from alcoholism, the withdrawals of which doctors say can kill people who drink as heavily as Jim did. He didn’t have so much as a headache.

16  JULY JUNE 2016 2016

In the years that followed, Jim’s business improved along with his health and his spiritual life. They found a good church and eventually migrated to Gateway, where they became members in 2003. Even though the alcohol and drugs were no longer a part of his life, he says his ego and selfishness were stronger than ever and his marriage problems continued. When Marlaine discovered Jim had been viewing pornography, it was the last straw for her and she left him again saying, “You’ve been sitting under the ministry and leadership of Robert Morris and Jimmy Evans for too long to be doing life and marriage like this.” He knew if he didn’t get help right away, his marriage would end for good. He realized just how serious the situation was when Marlaine was admitted to the hospital and she didn’t tell him. “That’s what prompted me to get help from Gateway,” he says. “We delved into the deep end of counseling, mentoring, and marriage classes.” When Jim began focusing on the heart of his problem— his ego—that’s when things began to change in his marriage and spiritual life. “I was deeply committed to getting it right this time,” he says. “I finally understood what Ephesians 5:25 means when it says to lay down your life for your wife. It means to lay down the remote, lay down work … lay down anything that you find more important than your wife.” Eventually, he became a deacon, and later he and Marlaine began mentoring couples going through difficult seasons in their marriage. Today, Jim has earned a Graduate Certificate in Christian Ministries from The King’s University and works as a ministry coordinator in Gateway’s membership services department. Marlaine works as a coordinator for the Gateway Bookstore. Together, they participate in marriage ministry, lead small group book studies on Discovering the Mind of a Woman, by Ken Nair, and counsel couples. It’s been almost 24 years since Jim took a knee in Marlaine’s apartment, and the road they’ve traveled together hasn’t been easy, but he has seen God do so many miracles— the biggest of which was the restoration of his marriage. “God healed three different areas of my life—alcohol, drugs, and impurity—and I believe He knew I wasn’t going to be able to do it on my own,” he says. “I’m so grateful He took those things out of my life and put my family back together.” GL

This is most evident during the song’s bridge: “Once a slave but now set free / Once was blind but now I see / Once an orphan now a king / Once a liar now believed.” “The most special part to me is the bridge,” says David. “It’s difficult for me to sing sometimes because I remember what it was like being a slave, feeling like an orphan, and being a liar—and now to be believed. It’s literally the testimony of what God has done in my life.” GL “Found In You” is on Gateway Worship’s album Walls, available in the Gateway Bookstore and on iTunes.

CULTURE

MEET

by Stacy Burnett

ONE OF THIS YEAR’S BIG OSCAR WINNERS was a movie called Room. Based on a book by Emma Donoghue, the movie recounts the harrowing fictional story of a teenage girl who is kidnapped and imprisoned in a one-room shed. While it’s home to her five-year-old son, Jack, it’s a prison to her. In a brilliant scheme, they escape the room where they lived for the entirety of Jack’s short life. Before their escape, Joy, better known as Ma, relays to Jack stories about life outside of “Room.” She talks about being at home with her parents and lying in a hammock in her backyard. She can’t wait for Jack to meet his grandparents one day, and she tells him he will love the outside world. Her precious relationship with Jack and these memories give Ma hope and something to hold onto during some of the darkest moments of her life. But the reality is that everything changed while she was stuck in the room. Her parents divorced, and her father didn’t want anything to do with her or Jack. There was no longer a hammock in their backyard. She could never go back to the innocence of her youth because everything had changed. Life as she’d known it no longer existed, and although outside of the room, she found herself distraught. I can’t help but think about where Ma put her hope—in familiar, comfortable things from her past. Most of us do the same thing when going through a difficult time, only to be let down. The Bible says we should put our hope and trust in Him, not in things of this world, and while the world is constantly changing, Hebrews 13:8 tells us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” When we put our hope in Him, we know that, regardless of our circumstances, He is good. He is good when we find ourselves in a literal prison or the prison of our own making. He is good when we are abused and when our faith is shaken. His goodness stays the same, through every age; we can bet our lives on it. Even if everything else changes, He is the same inside the room and outside of the room. While Gateway doesn’t recommend the film due to its “R” rating, the story’s strong themes of dedication and survival are inspiring.

PROFILE

Gateway Frisco, and it’s been cool seeing a culture of worship be established. It’s a very tight-knit community, like a small town.

BEN & ELISA HAAKE BEN HAAKE IS THE FRISCO CAMPUS WORSHIP PASTOR. HE AND HIS WIFE, ELISA, HAVE TWO BOYS: GRAHAM AND COLIN. ELISA: I first saw Ben at the end of 2007 when he was leading worship one night at Seven (now Gateway Young Adults). Then when I came on staff, we happened to be in the same Financial Peace University class. We didn’t really know each other before the class, so for those 13 weeks, I decided to sit next to him in every class. It wasn’t necessarily because I was interested in him, but he was always so serious, and I wanted to see if I could get him to smile!

interested in me, because he didn’t really talk to me, other than to ask me if I needed anything or wanted something to drink. It was kind of funny. BEN: People are always pretty surprised to find out that I’m highly introverted. You wouldn’t really see that on the weekend when I lead. ELISA: We eventually figured out we liked each other and ended up dating. After three breakups, the Lord made it very clear we were supposed to be together, and we got married. BEN: I knew whoever I married would minister with me, side-by-side. We had both received prophetic words that we were going to marry someone we could lead with and that our ministry would go to the next level when we were joined together.

ELISA: It’s family—literally for me! My brother, Johnny, is on the worship team with us, my sister-in-law is involved with Pink at our campus, my dad is a deacon, and my mom oversees prophetic training. But the campus is also one big spiritual family. We know what certain people are going through, and they trust us to lead them into the presence of God. We definitely feel the weight of that. BEN: We love traveling together—especially the Pacific Northwest, like Portland and Seattle. ELISA: My family moved here from Portland, Oregon. We lived on seven acres there and raised all kinds of animals—pigs, goats, horses, you name it. My least favorite chore was walking our pigs. The pigs were supposed to build more muscle than fat, but ours were all fat because we hated walking them. Sometimes they’d get out of control, and you’d have to chase them and catch them. It just wasn’t worth it. BEN: And I actually worked on a hog farm in Iowa growing up. My youth pastor raised 3,000 head of hog, and I used to help him.

BEN: I thought she was very attractive, and I loved her passion for the Lord. And she was obviously interested in me—she sat by me every week! [laughs]

ELISA: We’ve been doing that for almost six years now, and when we’re leading worship together, there’s a synergy there. We flow together easily, and it’s fun to sort of read each other’s minds in that way.

ELISA: I think we found out we both had grown up around pigs during one of those party games where you have to say two truths and a lie. It was one of those, “Wait! You did too?!” moments. [laughs]

ELISA: He ended up asking me out on a double date, and on the date I thought, There’s no way he’s really

BEN: We love leading together at the Frisco Campus. We were here right in the beginning when it became
