WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE SUMMERTIME IS FULL OF TRADITIONS AND
sweet memories for me: my father-inlaw’s famous hamburgers, the fresh cut grass in the backyard, a game of darts, a pitcher of lemonade, the St. Louis Cardinals game playing in the background. And when our kids were growing up, we spent hours in the summer sun at my in-laws’ lake house where we would swim, ski, wakeboard, jump off cliffs, and compete to see who could hold their breath the longest underwater. I remember one summer night we all drove the boat across the lake

for dinner and had so much fun that it was pitch dark when it came time to go home. My husband, Boyd, knew the lake like the back of his hand so I was not fearful at all. However, as we continued to cut through the smooth water with nothing in sight, my heart skipped a beat. I expressed concern to Boyd and could tell he was a little worried too. So we prayed. It was a short prayer, with a hint of desperation, that we would find our way home. After about a minute of peering into the darkness, we spotted the tiniest speck of white and just kept moving toward it. It felt like forever, but we eventually recognized the dock. My father-in-law had left the light on, and it was like a lighthouse calling us home. One dad made the way for another dad, and we made it back safely.

2 JUNE 2016
This Father’s Day, I’m reminded of this story and how God is the ultimate good Father, leaving the light on for us when we’re lost, helping us find our way through this dark world and into His home. At Gateway, we not only want to honor God as our Father but also those earthly fathers in our lives who do so much to provide for and prepare us for the future, and this issue of Gateway Life features a couple of great things for dads. You’ll definitely enjoy reading Pastor Sion Alford’s article on fathering kids with different personalities through different phases of life (page 12), and there’s also an activity page for kids to fill out about their dads (page 22). If you’re ready for some adventures indoors this summer, check out this issue’s Summer Survival Guide (page 18). There’s also a faith-challenging interview with Oscar-winning film actor and Gateway member, Arthur Redcloud (page 10). So take time this summer to relax, make some memories with your dad (heavenly or earthly!), and appreciate God’s beautiful creation in the clouds, warm breezes, and blooming flowers around you. Enjoy this issue of Gateway Life!

“Truthfully, I don’t particularly like big churches. I visited Gateway reluctantly, but here, people are truly about the Word and serving people. It isn’t just a mantra. It’s the heart of the people and the lifestyle I have come to be a part of.” Jade Rain James | via Facebook
“When I learned that my son was in critical condition at the hospital, with an infection in his spine and neck, I immediately posted about it on the myGateway App and asked for prayer. I don’t have words for what God did for my son. The doctors didn’t give him any chance of surviving through Friday night, but after two surgeries, mega doses of drugs, hundreds of prayers, and the limitless love, mercy, and miraculous healing power of God, my son was taken off life support this morning. He is sitting up, talking, and being himself. He has a long road ahead in rehab and physical therapy, but the prognosis is good. Praise God for His faithfulness and thank you, prayer warriors of Gateway. The surgeon said he had not seen anything like it in his 20 years of practice, that it was one for the books!” Ron Steenburg | via myGateway

“As new parents, we were told Gateway’s Amazing Kids Ministry was amazing. Having never left our firstborn but knowing it was time, we visited Gateway and dropped our baby off. I was a mess. Standing in the sanctuary and feeling near tears, a woman wrapped me up in a sincere and tight hug. I heard the Lord whisper that He had my baby in His hands. I was sold. I grew up in church my whole life, but this was the most real and tangible message I’d received from God through another person. Gateway introduced me to my identity in Christ and things have never been the same. I’m so blessed God brought us here almost six years ago. I have been volunteering for three years with those same ladies who loved my babies years ago, and my girls are both growing up with a love and passion for Jesus thanks to Amazing Kids.” Jennifer Bullpitt | via Facebook
“Eight years ago, my husband and I went to our first service at Gateway Church. I clearly remember the connection I felt in my spirit as we were looking for our seats during a beautiful time of worship. I immediately whispered to my husband, “This is the place! God’s presence is here.” From that day, this place became our church home—a community where I feel honored to serve as a worship leader. I can’t help but praise God for His hand, presence, grace, and favor over us as a body. Happy 16th Gateway Church!” Lily Goodman | via Instagram

But there were no tears as the refugee children played at the Easter Outreach in Fort Worth hosted by World Relief, a Gateway ministry partner that helps resettle refugees who’ve been displaced from their home countries. In fact, the more kids on the pile, the more laughter could be heard. A few feet away, a group of kids had their faces painted by volunteers while others chewed popcorn and waited in line for the carnival rides. In all, more than 100 people from nearly 10 different nations benefited from this outreach. While these numbers are strong, they pale in comparison to the impact World Relief has made over the last few years. Thanks to Gateway’s ministry partnership and your giving, we are able to work with World Relief to help thousands of families make a new home in North Texas. THE PILE UP OF CHILDREN

FULL-TIME TRUST AN INTERVIEW WITH ACTOR ARTHUR REDCLOUD
by DANIEL HOPKINS
RTHUR REDCLOUD HAS
been a member of Gateway Church since 2004, and since that time he’s been on a lifechanging journey with God. He grew up on a Navajo reservation in Arizona where his grandfather was a medicine man. He became a Christian in the early 2000s, and last year he played a significant role in the Academy Award–winning film The Revenant. While Gateway doesn’t recommend the film due to its “R” rating and graphic violence, it has an affecting story of survival in which Arthur Redcloud gives a strong performance.
A
HOW DID YOU COME TO GATEWAY? Years ago, I got saved through a ministry called Fellowship of the Sword. Around that time, Gateway was bringing in police officers from Southlake and Roanoke to work security at the church. They were called Gatekeepers and it was a good way to bring in police officers who weren’t believers. I worked in law enforcement and some of the officers I worked with told me about the church, and I went to serve as a Gatekeeper. After a few weeks I liked being at Gateway, but I wasn’t sure if I belonged. Then one day after church, Pastor Marcus Brecheen and his wife spoke some prophetic words over me. That’s when everything clicked, and I felt like I was supposed to be here.
WHAT CAUSED YOU TO HAVE THAT INITIAL HESITATION? Even back then, I heard Pastor Robert say, “We’re all about people.” I wondered, what kind of people? I know the doors are open but am I invited? I knew a lot of people might not accept me because of the color of my skin and my heritage. I felt very early on that I was accepted,
but I didn’t feel like I was received until one weekend when Jimmy Evans preached. I was serving behind the scenes and Pastor Jimmy gave me his book and DVD. In my heritage, that’s what it means to be received. It was his way of saying, “I don’t just want to learn about you, I want you to learn about me.” When he did that, I felt like I truly belonged at Gateway.
Texas full-time. When I ran out of money, I had to go look for a job. That’s how I found my current job hauling gas. I also started doing reenactments, modeling, and acting in documentaries as well as small, local independent films. They’re mostly about preserving the West, Tombstone, and cowboys and Indians. Then in 2014 I landed the role in The Revenant.
HOW HAS YOUR TIME AT GATEWAY IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
HOW MANY FUEL TRUCK DRIVERS DO YOU THINK HAVE WALKED THE RED CARPET AT THE OSCARS BEFORE YOU?
You learn so much from your church and all the different pastors. I have been in a lot of Equip classes and it’s helped me learn how to interpret what the Bible says and what pastors mean when they say certain things. Certain words have different meanings [to people in my heritage]. When I became a believer, they said, “Accept God in your heart.” In my culture, that means only parttime. But when I heard Pastor Todd say, “Receive God in your heart,” that means full-time. One means, “I’ll go to Him when I need to,” and the other means, “I’ll go to Him for everything.”
WHAT’S THE MOST DIFFICULT THING ABOUT BRINGING YOUR FAITH IN CHRIST TO THE PEOPLE WHO SHARE YOUR HERITAGE? It’s hard for them to understand the cross. They know about the Father and the Holy Spirit, but they don’t know about the Son. They think the Father should have saved the Son when He was on the cross. It’s difficult for them to grasp that He had to let the Son die.
HOW DID YOU GO FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT TO ACTING? I left the police department after two years because I wanted to study crime scene investigation, so for the next two years I went to the University of North
None! (laughs)
HOW HAS YOUR LIFE CHANGED SINCE THE REVENANT CAME OUT? Things are so different than they were two years ago. It has made me feel closer to God because I realize that getting the role was His complete, undeniable, mind-boggling favor. It was also an answer to prayer. I wasn’t sure God would hear me because in my culture growing up, you can talk to God but you don’t have conversations with Him. You don’t expect Him to talk back. That perception has definitely changed after this. My walk has been completely changed. My faith has been built up so much that I have complete trust in God.
WHAT HAS THIS EXPERIENCE TAUGHT YOU? Pastor Preston Morrison spoke at a Christmas event several years ago, and he asked his daughter what she wanted for Christmas. She said, “Get me whatever you want to get me.” She didn’t care because she knew it would be good. That’s my way of thinking now. I have complete trust in Him. I’ve learned not to put God inside a box. GL

TAKE THE LEAD Eight Things I’ve Learned About Parenting
by Pastor Sion Alford
I am not so sure I’m qualified to write this article. You see, my wife and I have eight kids but we are still getting counsel, we are still learning from others, and we still read books and articles about parenting in hopes that we can somehow be successful in child rearing.
We were once parents of three busy children, treading the waters of life but barely keeping our heads above the circumstances and pressures of raising a healthy family in an unhealthy world. Then, through a series of very unfortunate events, we were handed five precious children that had tragically lost both parents. Almost overnight our family doubled in size and my crash course in fathering began. Though we are still, eight years later, navigating the waters of this gigantic challenge, I have learned some things about fathering that I would love to share with you. Since we have eight kids I thought it would be appropriate to challenge you with eight things I have learned while fathering these unique and special children.
8. EVERY CHILD IS DIFFERENT.
This may seem obvious but when you, as a father, understand that God made each of your children unique, it will help you appreciate what makes them different. I have heard many times when counseling or encouraging other fathers that their frustration with their kids is, “They don’t like sports,” or “they don’t get it when it comes to studying,” and the list goes on. Every kid is unique. Even though each child may have come from the same two parents, each one is so distinct. Their personalities, their likes and dislikes, their temperaments, their passions, and their strengths are all different. Some practical things that can help you celebrate your kids are learning their personality types through tests such as the Myers Briggs or Open Four Temperaments. Learn their love language by running them through the 5 Love Languages profile, and discover their strengths by using the StrengthsFinder test. Shannon and I have used all of these tools to help us discover the uniqueness of each of our eight children. As a father, this has helped me become a better communicator to each of them, become a better provider for them, and, most of all, know how to express my unconditional love for them.
7. EVERY CHILD IS DIFFERENT FOR A REASON.
Myles Monroe said it this way: “You are the way you are because of why you are.” Our job as fathers is to see past the way our kids are to why they are, so we can help mold, shape, and transform them into vessels God can use. My strong-willed kids are designed this way by God because their calling will need a strong-willed person who is submitted to God. The tests mentioned above have helped us “connect the dots” between their personalities and their callings. It helps us see their struggles not as failures but as strengths that need direction not demolition.
6. THE GREATEST STRUGGLE OUR KIDS WILL HAVE IS WITH THEIR IDENTITIES.
Wow. I could write a book on this. This one is so important. Everything our kids face in this world will challenge their identities … who they are. The peer pressures at school, social media, movies, music, and marketing are all aimed at defining people’s identity, and 90 percent of it is aimed at our children.
1 https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/making-time-for-kids-study-says-qualitytrumps-quantity/2015/03/28/10813192-d378-11e4-8fce-3941fc548f1c_story.html
Romans 12:2 (NLT) says, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.” It is the Word of God that changes us. This is how Jesus did it. He spent 30 years preparing for a 3-year ministry. He spent 30 years in total obscurity until the day he stood knee-deep in the Jordan River and God broke decades of silence with these simple yet profound words: “This is my Son in whom I am well pleased …” The Father’s affirmation. The Father’s confirmation. Jesus was now ready for ministry! Do this for your beloved little ones. Speak your affirmation over them. Use the “obscure” years of their adolescence as a season where you teach them who they are and why they are. The first words out of the devil’s mouth when Jesus left the Jordan River and walked into the wilderness were, “If you are the Son of God …” The attack was on His identity. The devil’s tactics have not changed and neither have God’s: know who you are and know whose you are!
5. STAY CALM.
Your kids are going to mess up. Surprise! They are going to blow it, and sometimes they are going to make a big mess of things. Two words: stay calm. One of the worst things we can do as fathers is lose our cool. When we do, our response becomes a bigger problem than the one we are trying to solve. The focus shifts from their issue to our issue. When we are calm we hear more and they hear more. It creates an atmosphere in which they feel safe and they can see the real issue more clearly.
4. INVEST TIME.
You can’t really do any of the above without this. The most valuable thing you can give your kids is quality time. Writer and speaker Alicia Chole says it like this, “Time is not really spent. Instead, it is invested in a future we cannot see.” Spending time and investing time are two different things. Recent studies have shown that the quantity of time spent with kids is not associated with positive outcomes for the children. As a matter of fact, the average time spent with children by their parents over the last 30 years has drastically increased without a significant increase in beneficial outcomes for the children. A study by the Journal of Marriage and Family 1 has shown the quality of time, not quantity of time, has a positive impact on children. Get out from in front of the TV and live life with them!
GATEWAYPEOPLE.COM 13
3. LOVE YOUR WIFE.
Ephesians 5:25 says it plain and simple: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” Your kids are watching and they see how you love your wife. The kind of love God requires us to have for our wives is unconditional, serving, and selfless. It is a kind of love that gives everything and holds nothing back. This is the greatest gift you can give your children as a father and as a couple. I wish I could say that I have modeled this perfectly for my kids but I haven’t. There have been times when I have been a real jerk to my wife, sometimes in front of the kids. But I repented and asked for forgiveness, and I did it in front of my kids! They saw me act like an idiot so they needed to see me humble myself and admit my mistakes. This has made them see me as a real person, just like they are. Success is not having your kids see you as a perfect dad; success is having your kids see you as a humble dad who loves his wife and family enough to apologize, repent, and change. When they see this, they will feel safe and secure knowing that you are a person who loves them and will do anything for them.
1. SHOW THEM THE HEAVENLY FATHER.
I love this quote from John Piper: “Human fatherhood exists to display the beauty of God’s fatherhood. Our highest calling as fathers is to be the image of God’s fatherhood to our children.” 2 I think this says it all. The experiences your children share with you will shape the image they have of their Heavenly Father. You have a chance to impact the next generation of the Church and the world by investing into the future that resides within each of your kids. The greatest ministry on earth is not found on the mission fields, it is found within the four walls of your home. It is found in the hearts of each unique child that God has blessed us with. Be a father. Show the Father. Take the lead! GL
Sion Alford is an executive pastor of worship, and his new book, Divine Detours: When God Messes Up Your Plans, is available in the Gateway Bookstore.
2. TAKE THE LEAD.
Dads, we need to be the leaders of Bible study and prayer in our homes. We need to be the ones taking the family to church and encouraging our kids in their spiritual growth with Christ. Lead by example in these areas. Let them see you read His Word. Let them hear you pray. Let them see you worship God at home and at church. You are the spiritual thermostat of the home. Set the spiritual climate in your house and lead the family in purity. Don’t let anything into your house that can contaminate your children’s spirit, soul, or body (2 Corinthians 7:1). Be the leader and take the lead.

Attitude = Altitude How to have a fulfilled life by John Maxwell
When I was growing up, my father paid me an allowance to read books. He picked the books, and we were required to read for 30 minutes a day. My friends, however, were paid to do chores. I went to my dad one day and asked if I could get paid to do my chores as well. He said, “Son, I’m never going to pay you to do chores. You do chores because you’re part of the family. I put my money where my values are and I value good books.” One of the first books he gave me to read was As a Man Thinketh. In it James Allen writes that the greatest
16 JUNE 2016
discovery of his generation is that people can alter their lives by altering their minds. When you begin to think right, things begin to change. It was a revolutionary idea at its time, but James Allen wasn’t the first person to say it. Thousands of years before he was born, Solomon wrote these words in Ecclesiastes 10:2: “Wise thinking leads to right living; Stupid thinking leads to wrong living.” In other words, your attitude determines your altitude.
Let me define what I mean by attitude. An attitude is the paintbrush of the mind. What your mind sees is strongly determined by your attitude, and that in turn affects whether or not your life is fulfilled. What does is mean to be fulfilled? Here are four characteristics of people who live a fulfilled life. 1. They celebrate God. Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” People who are full of God and are fulfilled in their lives have a sense of gratitude for what God has done for them, and they’re continually in a pattern of worship. 2. They add value to people. I like the way Philippians 4:4 continues in The Message version: “Make it as clear as you can to all you meet that you’re on their side, working with them and not against them.” Fulfilled people are always coming to people’s lives to help, serve, give, and add value. 3. They give their concerns to God. You have a Father you can trust who unconditionally loves you. 1 Peter 5:7 tells us to cast all of our cares upon God because He cares for us. 4. They experience God’s wholeness. In other words, they experience all that God has for them all the time. If you’re like me, you’re thinking this is the kind of life I want to live! Well, I have good news for you. In Philippians 4:8, Paul tells us exactly how we can experience a fulfilled life. “Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies. (The Message)” He’s saying that the key to a fulfilled life is to start by filling your mind correctly. Then after our mind is full of good stuff, we let it soak in by meditating on it. And finally, we practice the good things on which we’ve been meditating. Do you know what Paul is saying here? He’s simply telling us to have a good attitude, and he goes on to tell us what people with good attitudes possess. 1. They possess a teachable spirit. Being teachable can be difficult. It requires repeated long, hard looks in the mirror and being open to criticism and change. You might look in the mirror and say, “Oh my goodness, I may be the problem.” We see people not as they are but as we are. Therefore, if we’re not right, the people around us are not right.
2. They take responsibility for their attitude. We’re responsible for what we put in our minds, meditate on, and practice. There’s a funny story about a construction worker. One day he opened his lunch and started complaining, “Bologna sandwich again? It’s the fourth day this week and I hate bologna!” His friend beside him said, “Calm down, just tell your wife you don’t want another bologna sandwich tomorrow.” The construction worker said, “You leave my wife out of it. I pack my own lunch!” In other words, oftentimes the bad things in our lives are a direct result of what we put in our minds and meditate on. 3. They travel the high road. Treat people better than they treat you. There’s a low road on which we treat people worse than they treat us. On the middle road, we treat people the same way they treat us. But on the high road, we treat people better than they treat us. God chooses what we go through and we choose how we go through it. We can have a bad attitude or we can take the high road. My dad is an amazing man, and last November we celebrated his 94th birthday. He’s the most positive encourager I know. Several years ago after my mom died, we helped him get into a senior citizen’s care complex so he could be near the medical people and wouldn’t be alone. We registered him in a facility that was still being built, and he would go there every day to see the workers, bring them water, and encourage them. When it came time to open the facility, he wanted to be the first one to move in. I asked him why and this is what he said: “All these people are coming here and they’re concerned because this is such a big change and they’re leaving their families. I need to be there first so I can greet everyone and tell them that I love them, I’m glad they’re here, and we’re going to be friends.” Sure enough, he’s greeted every person who’s moved in, saying, “My name is Melvin Maxwell and I just want you to know we’re going to be friends and it’s going to be okay.” How can a person at that age live, talk, and believe like that? It’s simple, just do what Paul says in Philippians 4, and when circumstances in life get difficult, you can be an incredible witness for the Lord. GL
God chooses what we go through, and we choose how we go through it.

SUMMER SURVIVAL GUIDE FUN INDOOR ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS (AND PARENTS!) THIS SUMMER
We know what summer means here in Texas: no school and unbearable heat. Sometimes staying inside is inevitable, and if you’re starting to hear the words, “I’m bored,” don’t worry! Here are some free, fun activities (that don’t include the television) to get the kids moving.
Superhero Mission Take your kids on a superhero mission around the house. Put on the soundtrack to a superhero movie and have the kids wear capes and masks. Use plastic cups as Nerf gun targets, create a maze with string, solve a puzzle, go through an obstacle course made with cardboard boxes and furniture, and at the end, have a special treat waiting! Cleanup Bonus: After the kids are done with the activities and get their treat, the next part in their superhero race is to clean up! Keep that fun superhero music on so the cleanup will be fast and epic.
Fortress of Fun Of course, any indoor activity is much more fun inside a fort. Use blankets, sheets, rubber bands, sofa cushions, and furniture to build the fort. Create a sign to put outside of it, hang some twinkle lights all around the inside, and fill the fort with blankets, pillows, toys, games, snacks, and books. It’s bound to be a hit with your tweens as well as your little ones! Naptime Bonus: Fort naps are awesome. Share pictures of your fort with us! #gatewaykids
BLANKETS
Christmas in June Get out your winter pajamas, put Christmas music on, and pretend it’s a super cold day outside! Create your own fake snowman (mix 1/2 cup hair conditioner and 2 cups of baking soda to create play snow), make paper snowflakes, and drink hot cocoa.
Arcade Day Use cardboard boxes, markers, scissors, tape, and anything else in the house to create arcade games like skee ball, putt putt, ring toss, paper airplane basketball, blow dart targets, or balloon badminton. Play funky music and pretend you’re at the arcade—that means prizes can be won for games well played!
LAUNDRY BASKETS CARDBOARD BOX
Figure 1-2. Create an arcade.
Crown Your Top Chef Pick out some easy recipes and have your kids choose a few to make! Set up a video camera and have everyone pretend to be on a cooking competition show. You can use this time to teach them about kitchen safety, healthy eating, and food preparation in a fun way, and you can even offer an award for “Best Dish!” Your older kids will love the freedom to have fun and be creative in the kitchen. Cleanup Bonus: One of the biggest lessons you can teach about food preparation is that the cooking isn’t done until the dishes are all clean, but this time around, the Top Chef gets a free pass!
Spa Day
This one is great for everyone in the house, not just the girls! Create a menu of services (manicure, pedicure, facial mask, foot soak, hand massage, etc.), cut up some cucumber slices, light a great smelling candle, and enjoy pampering one another! CHAIR

Homemade Bonus: The Internet features great recipes using household items to make your own foot soaks and facial masks, so you don’t have to purchase expensive products for your spa! GL What fun indoor activities do you do to help keep your kids active? Share them with us! #gatewaykids

EVEN IF YOU HAVEN’T READ IT, you’ve probably heard about Marie Kondo’s “tidying” manifesto, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. The Japanese author has sold more than 1.6 million copies in North America alone. Kondo’s book is literally sweeping the nation of clutter and unused items with her revolutionary KonMari Method. When we stop and ask ourselves, “Why is this book so popular?” we are reminded that our society is fueled by consumerism and excess. Every day advertisers tell us we need more, but we already have too much, and most of us don’t know what to do with what we do have. Kondo provides a simplistic approach to decluttering and organizing: 1) Does your belonging spark joy? 2) If it does, keep it. And more importantly, use it. If it doesn’t spark joy—let it go. While her practical solutions to clutter are definitely worth pursuing, her Eastern heritage has influenced some ideas in the book that don’t line up with our biblical principles, such as thanking items for their usefulness. However, if we step back and adapt this idea to instead thank God, the book becomes about more than just tidying—it also becomes about our gratitude for His provision. Kondo implies that letting go of old things gives you space to appreciate what you have. As Christians, we know the emancipation from stuff not only gives us physical freedom from our things but a level of spiritual freedom as well when we begin to live a lifestyle based on joy and thanksgiving instead of greed or materialism. This book may not be written from a Christian perspective, but if you intersect a Christ-centered mindset with the practical methods in it, you’ll find yourself more aware of God’s freedom, more grateful, and definitely tidier!
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven …. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19–21 (NLT)

PROFILE
me up because they wanted a scruffy guy that looked like he’d been living on an island for 10 years. (I had a pretty scraggly beard and they told me not to shave.) I was briefly cast as one of “The Others,” and I got to be on the set for several days. It was surreal throwing a football on the beach with Terry O’Quinn (Locke) and hanging out with Michael Emerson (Ben Linus).
ERIC ORSON ERIC ORSON IS THE NRH CAMPUS WORSHIP PASTOR. HE AND HIS WIFE, EMILY, HAVE TWO CHILDREN, ELIJAH AND NYAH, AND A GREAT DANE NAMED ZURICH. I’VE BEEN IN MINISTRY for 16 years. I grew up in West Texas in a small town called Lamesa and later in Horseshoe Bay. My dad is a cotton farmer, but it wasn’t what I wanted to do. My family was very musical, so I grew up singing in church and my school choir. When I went to college at Baylor University, I attended a Bible study led by Louie Giglio. He had an amazing worship band and I felt the Holy Spirit lighting a fire in me to lead worship someday. A few years later, I was invited to sing at a wedding. A friend of mine heard me sing there and suggested I join the worship team at a local church. I did, and eventually I became a worship pastor and met my wife there. I FIRST SAW EMILY in the lobby at church. I almost passed out because I thought she was so beautiful, but
34 JUNE 2016
I didn’t see her again for a long time. I asked around and found out her name. Weeks later I was grabbing a coffee in the lobby and I looked up and saw her. Without thinking, I blurted out, “Oh hey, you’re Emily!” Immediately I thought, Oh great, now she thinks I’m a stalker. Luckily, she knew me as a worship pastor so she let me off the hook. WHEN EMILY AND I GOT MARRIED, she worked in animal medicine and had a great passion for animals. Since she was a little girl, she had a dream of working with dolphins. So when she got an offer to train dolphins in Hawaii, as well as educate the public on ocean conservation, it was a Super Bowl opportunity for her. We packed up everything and moved to Hawaii for about a year and a half. The lifestyle there really stuck with me. I loved the sunshine, surfing at the beach, and hiking in the rainforest. I miss it a lot but, hey, maybe the Lord will lead Gateway Church to open a Hawaii campus someday! WHEN WE MOVED TO HAWAII, Lost was really popular on television. I was a fan of the show, and since they were filming there, they were always looking for extras. One day, my wife submitted photos of us. They called
HAWAII WAS AMAZING, but we knew God was calling us back here to start a family. We started praying about finding a church and the right job in ministry for me. The Holy Spirit drew us specifically to Gateway, but they were fully staffed at the time. God told me very clearly, “Plant your life and your family here, and trust me.” So for three years, I took a job in sales while my wife and I plugged in as members of Gateway. After a while, I started to help lead worship, and then one day Pastor Sion called me and said, “There’s an opening for a worship pastor at the NRH Campus. We’ve prayed about it and believe it’s supposed to be you.” It was an amazing feeling, but I’ll never forget hearing God’s voice years earlier saying, “Stay patient and faithful, and I’ll take care of the rest.” I LOVE SPENDING TIME OUTDOORS and I’m an adventure seeker. I love cycling, mountain biking, scuba diving, and skydiving. My wife and I love traveling and meeting people from different cultures and walks of life. God created such a big, beautiful world, and my family and I love to explore it as much as possible! YEARS AGO, I got to perform several songs for President George W. Bush at a rally of 7,000 people at Southern Methodist University’s Moody Coliseum. I got to shake his hand afterward. It was an honor and is a great memory.
