WELCOME

WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE something special about September. I know January starts a new year with all of our good-intentioned resolutions, but I would venture to say that more new things happen in month number nine than any other time of year. Kids settle into their new classes, new TV shows replace those dreaded reruns, and football season kicks off with THERE HAS ALWAYS BEEN

championship hopefuls dancing in our heads. Here’s where I get transparent with you. The “something special about September” I mentioned before? Well, I didn’t say I always liked it. This is coming from the guy who never lived farther than a quarter mile from where he was born for the first 43 years of his life. Prior to joining Gateway’s staff, I had been at the same job for 27 years. Goodness, I have socks older than most of you! But here’s what God has done in the life of a former stick in the mud, He’s taught me that He is into new things. He is a God of growth. Just when we get comfortable, He will move

us on to something new. The kingdom of God is always expanding. Sixteen short years ago, as Mary and I sat in Pastor Robert’s living room and heard the vision of Gateway Church explained, my shell cracked. God whispered something to us both that September night. He whispered that He was about to do something big. God challenged me to step out of the old and into the new He had waiting. Like the chick that finally escapes from the egg, I took my first steps toward life change. This issue of Gateway Life high lights several stories and opportunities for change. For starters, we are kicking off our new season of Gateway Groups, Family Life Night, and Equip classes (p. 16). We also have a compelling salvation story from a formerly Hindu girl who is now a part of our Gateway family (p. 12). We’re also thrilled to share with you more about our good friend, Pastor Tim Ross’s new church in Irving (p. 10). You can read about the vision behind planting Embassy City Church. I challenge you to step out into something new this season—join a group, get equipped, serve on one of our teams. September is here. Let the cracking begin.

They installed a French drain on the side of my house, replaced rotted boards on my patio deck, installed a new showerhead in my bathroom, and then looked around for other things they thought needed to be done—so they fixed the backyard gate door and trimmed two front yard trees! WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE DAY? Spend the morning at the beach, the afternoon at a St. Louis Cardinals game, and the evening at Disney watching fireworks! Probably geographically impossible, but it would be the ultimate day. WHAT IS SOMETHING NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT YOU? I was once attacked by a baboon while going to the bathroom behind a tree in the jungles of Tanzania. PROUDEST MOMENT? Every moment I get to walk into a room with my wife, Shelly, and our four children, Atley, Avery, Canon, and Champ, by my side. WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? I thought being a stuntman would be really cool. I had The Fall Guy lunch pail in first grade! MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? Trying to be funny at my goddaughter’s fifth-grade birthday party, I told her to smell the birthday cake because it smelled like peanut butter. She bent down to sniff it, and I pushed her face into the cake. She came up with a bloody lip. The room of girls looked at me like I was the biggest moron. I wanted to crawl into a hole.

ART FOR THE KINGDOM How Gateway Ministers to Artists Around the World by Katie Smith

E

very couple of months, you’ll find a bunch of internationally known music artists in one place. It’s not an awards show or a performance. No, this is something organic. Something born out of necessity and God’s desire for everyone to have a place to call home. This is Gateway’s artist gathering, and although its beginning was small, the impact has become massive. When Pastor Tim Sheppard came to Gateway with his family in 2004, he was a full-time, touring contemporary Christian artist. He had been traveling for many years, and he and his family were looking for a healthy church

to call home. The first service they visited, Pastor Robert announced that Gateway’s annual presbytery services were the next week. Pastor Tim and his wife, Kelly, decided that even though they lived in Rockwall—about an hour from the campus—they would go to each of the presbytery services. It was during one of those nights that God confirmed to him through a prophetic word that the next season of his life would entail investing in artists. But even before Pastor Tim joined Gateway, Pastor Thomas Miller had a heart for artists to find a place in the local church. “In the past, the body of Christ as a whole didn’t

“WE WANT TO CONNECT THE HEART OF THE ARTIST TO THE CHURCH AND THE HEART OF THE CHURCH TO THE ARTIST.” always seem to know how to relate to creative artists or bring them into community,” says Pastor Tim. “And artists have not always valued the importance of the local church. But we believe artists find their greatest fulfillment when they’re not just ‘members’ of a church but genuinely connected in community and relationship.” And it’s not just a one-way relationship; the church can greatly benefit from the creativity and freshness that an artist brings. As Pastor Tim got involved in Gateway Worship, Pastor Thomas began to encourage him in his calling. So, he began to develop relationships with emerging worship leaders and songwriters within Gateway. Then, in 2009, he joined Gateway’s staff as its first artist in residence. And in 2014, Tim saw even greater confirmation of that prophecy spoken to him 10 years earlier. That year, Gateway Worship officially created a Worship Artistry ministry with one purpose: to minister to and support full-time artists. “We understand what their lives are like—the ebb and flow of income, the ups and downs of travel, and the challenges with demanding schedules,” says Pastor Tim. “I love being able to walk alongside them to encourage them in their life and ministry, and I am so grateful to Gateway and Pastor Thomas for the opportunity to serve this way.” There are several ways Gateway ministers to these artists and provides a respite from the stressful music industry and fast-paced touring lifestyle, and one of the main ones is the artist gathering. Several times a year, Gateway invites artists and their spouses to join

together for an evening of food and fellowship. These artist gatherings are a place to plug in, build relationships with like-minded people, and see what the Lord has to say. From Dove Award–winning singer-songwriter Kari Jobe Carnes to Latin Grammy nominee Lilly Goodman and to mainstream artists like Bryce and Tara Avary of The Rocket Summer, a wide range of artists call Gateway home. It’s an unprecedented kind of ministry, but so is the potential impact. “Last time we counted, among the people involved in our artist community right now, there are over 10 million social media followers,” says Pastor Tim. “Talk about influence!” Dove Award–winning singer-songwriter Mark Harris also serves as a pastor and artist in residence on staff at Gateway. And in August, award-winning Brazilian worship leader and singer-songwriter Ana Paula Valadão and Latin Grammy Award winner Coalo Zamorano joined the Gateway staff as artists in residence. Several other full-time touring artists within Gateway’s artist community often serve at events and services. This is why what we call “road pastoring” is another important aspect of the Worship Artistry ministry. Many of the artists tour, live, or work on projects outside of the Dallas/Fort Worth area, so Tim and his team bring Gateway to them. Sometimes this means heading to Los Angeles to support The Rocket Summer as they make their new album, meeting award-winning Puerto Rican singer-songwriter Julissa Rivera (known simply as Julissa) on the road as she tours and promotes her new album and book, and flying to Puerto Rico to offer support for international worship leader and singer-songwriter Christine D’Clario’s live recording in a packed arena. Road pastoring truly involves meeting people right where they are, on whatever road.

PLANTING AN

EMBASSY PASTOR TIM ROSS TALKS ABOUT HIS VISION FOR EMBASSY CITY CHURCH

10  SEPTEMBER 2015

PASTOR TIM ROSS LOVES THE CITY OF IRVING. IN FACT, THERE ARE

few people on this earth as passionate about Irving as he is. He says it’s because he has a burden for that city, which has led him to plant Embassy City Church. With Gateway’s blessing, Embassy City Church will join other life-giving churches in North Irving, and he is very excited about having a church there. Tim didn’t always want to be a senior pastor. He dreamed of becoming a homicide detective and started the process of joining the Los Angeles Police Department in 1995. In the middle of that process he became radically saved in January of 1996 and started preaching five weeks later. Even in the years that followed, he wasn’t sure about becoming a senior pastor. “I never saw myself as Batman,” he says jokingly. “I was always more of a Robin.” Over the course of several months in early 2013, God spoke to Tim about planting Embassy City Church in Irving. Tim was thrilled because of his deep roots in Irving. It’s where he lived and worked for years, he proposed to his wife, and both of his children were born. God told him, “This is where you’ll give birth to our church.” There’s another reason Tim loves Irving—its diversity. Tim came to Dallas from Southern California in 1997. Two days before he was coming to visit his aunt and uncle here, the Lord told him to pack his bags and move here, so he bought a one-way ticket to Dallas on a Greyhound bus. “The diversity of Southern California never left my heart,” says Tim. “When I moved to Irving it felt like home.” Several months ago, as he was studying Irving’s history, it jumped out at him. In 2012, Trulia published a study that found Irving’s 75038 ZIP code was the single most diverse ZIP code in the United States. “Seeing that statistic was a confirmation of what God is going to do through our church,” says Tim. “I’m going to be very intentional about having diversity at Embassy City Church.” Tim believes Embassy City Church will join with the variety of existing churches in Irving to help raise the Godconsciousness of the city. “It takes all types to reach all types,” says Tim. “We want to help serve alongside the established churches in the city to reach more people for Jesus.”

“I felt like the Holy Spirit said to me, ‘They planned for many things to be here, but God wants to be here too.’” Irving has a very unique history. Most notable is Las Colinas, a mixed-use residential and commercial development that spans 12,000 acres. While the growth has been successful, it’s difficult to ignore the lack of visible churches in the area. “I felt like the Holy Spirit said to me, ‘They planned for many things to be here, but God wants to be here too,’” says Tim. So on September 13 at 10:00 am, Pastor Tim will lead the charge at Jack E. Singley Academy in Irving for Embassy City Church’s first service. He is preparing for a spiritual battle that will require a lot of prayer, and he’s passionate about seeing people become ambassadors for the kingdom of God. “I am grateful to be sent by Pastor Robert and our elders to Irving,” says Tim. “We are ready to serve!” GL

HE IS REAL

In one moment, a miracle changed a family’s life forever. by Sarah Wronko 12  SEPTEMBER 2015

IT WAS ALREADY HOT AND HUMID AS 16-YEAR-OLD MALA MAHARAJ

prepared for school. She waved goodbye to her mother, Roshni, and all seemed well with the world. Mala and her family were high-caste, devoted Hindus in Durban, South Africa, and were considered priests and kings in their culture. For the Maharajs, life was filled with visits to the temples and worship of Hindu idols. However, this was the day true faith would enter Mala’s life. School ended and Mala returned home to an empty house, which was strange considering that her mom was always home to greet her. As Mala entered the home, she noticed her desk was in the middle of the hallway, and the ceiling, now above her desk, had been ripped open, revealing the boards overhead. In her mother’s bedroom, a red sari was laying carelessly on the floor. The home seemed in disarray, and Mala attempted to put everything back in its place before beginning her homework. Later, Mala’s father and brother arrived home with pained expressions etched on their faces. “Where is mom?” Mala asked with urgency. Eischan, Mala’s brother, broke his silence as he cried, “Mom tried to commit suicide by hanging herself, but when she didn’t succeed, she overdosed on sleeping pills.” Eischan said he had come home early from school and had found their mother laying on the floor unconscious and foaming at the mouth. At the hospital, doctors had taken to burning Roshni’s feet in an effort to awaken her from her comatose state. When the family arrived and saw the burns on her feet, they knew they needed to move her to another hospital. Two days later the family wept as they gathered around Roshni’s bed. They had prayed to their Hindu gods, but as always, their idols were silent. Mala held her mother’s hand as the doctors were about to unplug the life-support machine, as nothing more could be done—her mother would soon die. The doctor left the room to give the family privacy as they said their goodbyes, and at that moment, three men appeared in the doorway of the hospital room. They told Mala’s family that they were Christians, and they asked if they could pray for Roshni. The family was in complete despair, and while the prayers would have been scoffed at two days before, on this day the prayers were welcomed. Why not? was Mala’s thought. We have tried everything else. The men surrounded Roshni’s bed, laid hands on her, and began to pray. It was a simple prayer—almost a whisper— yet in that moment, Mala’s mother began to twitch and then she began to move. The men ended their prayer and left, but as soon as they had walked out of the door Mala’s mother was fully conscious and completely healed! Mala ran after the men to ask them what they had done, but the hallway was empty—they had vanished.

AS MALA ENTERED THE HOME, SHE NOTICED THE CEILING HAD BEEN RIPPED OPEN, RELVEALING THE BOARDS OVERHEAD. The doctor saw Roshni sitting up in her bed and proclaimed, “It’s a miracle!” Mala’s mother had been miraculously healed in one moment. The family knew a miracle had taken place. God is real! Forever changed by this miracle, Mala and her family sought out the local pastor in their city to find out about the Jesus who had healed their mother. The family began to attend church and soon after received Jesus as Lord and Savior. The entire family was baptized in the Indian Ocean. After receiving Jesus Christ as her Lord, Mala went on to attend Bible school and later became a missionary, preaching the gospel and sharing her testimony with everyone she meets: “I had nothing, no money, but I am never happier than when I am sharing about the love of God.” Today, Mala’s parents continue to minister in their hometown of Durban, South Africa, sharing about the saving power of Jesus Christ. “Trust in the Lord to see you through every circumstance in your life,” says Mala. “Nothing is too difficult for the Lord. God has given each of us a testimony that can reach so many. We just have to share it. And like those three men who came into our hospital room, we must be willing to ask, ‘Can I pray for you today?’” Mala’s passion is to see all believers proclaim the gospel to all who need Jesus and are searching for healing and deliverance. “I can’t imagine what my life would be like if those three men did not pray for my mom that day,” says Mala. “Where would I be? We must step out in faith and fulfill God’s purpose for our lives.” GL Currently, Mala is a Pink Mentor, and she and her husband, Paul Brough, serve in Guest Central each week where they ask Gateway guests, “Can I pray for you today?” They have two handsome sons: Andre and Austin. Mala and Paul founded Fotos4Hope, which is a philanthropic organization that raises funds for local and national charities through professional photography services. For more information, visit fotos4hope.org. For information about Gateway’s ministry trip to Durban, South Africa, from November 29–December 9, visit bless.gatewaypeople.com.

The simple lyrics and hymn-like feel of “Christ Be Glorified” have grabbed people’s hearts here at Gateway and back in Portland. It’s now the title track on City Bible Church’s newly released worship album. But writing a song just to record it is not Ben’s goal. “As a worship pastor, I have a congregation in front of me every week, and the whole purpose and goal of any song is for it to connect with people so they can connect with God,” says Ben. “Especially the person who may have worked 50+ hours that week and had no time with the Lord. I feel we accomplished that with this song.” GL “Christ Be Glorified” is available on The Blessed Life: Songs from Gateway Devotions at the Gateway Bookstore and iTunes.

Here’s a sneak peak at a couple of the classes we have planned: Strengths-Based Marriage Taught by Allan Kelsey This class will cover best areas of communication between a husband and wife as well as brand new insight on understand ing your spouse’s motivations and innate attributes.

God has wired all of us to desire companionship and community, but with a church as big as Gateway, sometimes it’s hard to see the same people twice! Gateway Groups are a way for you to meet new people, grow stronger in your relationship with God and others, and foster a small community you can call your own. Whether your group meets weekly for coffee or monthly to go rock climbing, there’s a place within Gateway where you belong. Groups begin a new semester after our annual Block Party at each campus. The Block Party is a great way to explore different groups, meet leaders, and ask questions to find out which group fits you best. “Many of the artists have said to me, ‘I cannot describe the difference between having gone out on my own in the past compared to going out now knowing my home church is really covering me,’” says Pastor Tim. Worship Artistry is not only ministering to those with established influence but also actively engaging emerging leaders as well. Pastor Mark heads up a monthly meeting for the worship leadership students at The King’s University. It’s a great opportunity to connect up-and-coming leaders to the local church and to help mentor and send them out filled and fully supported. As more artists connect with Gateway, the ministry continues to grow. “Right now, our focus is on music and worship artists, but I would love to see a day when we’re relating to authors, dancers, and actors—anyone making a living from their creativity,” says Pastor Tim. “That’s the long-term dream.” Tim Sheppard is an executive pastor and artist in residence in Gateway Worship. Tim and his wife, Kelly, have one daughter, Jessica. For more information about Gateway Worship, visit gatewayworship.com.

PROFILE

coming from up north. The pace is definitely a lot slower here, and I actually know each of my neighbors. Toronto is less interactive, and most people seem to be focused on their careers. I still like a faster pace, but I’ve learned to enjoy the restful atmosphere in Texas. MARLA AND I HAVE THREE KIDS, Emmett, Zoey, and Hilary, and we’ve created a new tradition. Almost every night, we all go out on a long walk together. It’s a great way to spend time with the whole family.

KEMTAL GLASGOW KEMTAL GLASGOW IS A PASTOR IN FAMILY LIFE. HE AND HIS WIFE, MARLA, HAVE THREE CHILDREN, EMMETT, ZOEY, AND HILARY.

MY LAST JOB was with Acquire the Fire (ATF). I started out attending and volunteering with the ministry when I was a kid. Years later, I became part of the team and eventually ended up leading the whole ministry as the executive director. WHEN I WAS WITH ATF, I would fly more than 120 times a year. I traveled all over the globe and had a lot of fun. I wouldn’t trade that season of my life for the world. Sometimes after a conference I’d stay over the Sunday and minister in a local church in that city. But as my family and I became more involved at Gateway, it became more difficult for me to be gone. I would fly directly home so we could all go to church together. Now I’m here every weekend and loving it! I’VE LIVED BETWEEN TWO WORLDS my entire life. I love business and before I joined ATF, I worked for a large Fortune 500 company and was very successful. I started at the bottom and worked my way up until I was a regional manager with the company. I found that you can apply many business principles to ministry. They can really go hand in hand. So when I went into ministry, it was a seamless transition. I MET MY WIFE, MARLA, in Calgary, Canada—I was born and raised in Toronto. We’ve only been in Texas for a few years, so there was a lot of culture shock

ONE OF MY FAVORITE WAYS to rest is to take a kayak out on a calm lake. I don’t need to go fast, and I definitely don’t need any rapids! I just like to paddle around a little and chill out. I’ve had some of my favorite times with the Lord out on a calm lake during a cool day. PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED to learn that I’m actually an introvert. I speak in public quite often, and my speaking style can be animated, but the truth is I’m pretty subdued. I’m always okay just to be in a room by myself with a book. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT EXCITES ME THE MOST about Family Life is the impact we’re having on families. Working with ATF, I saw firsthand how the family unit is under attack. There’s an epidemic of absent and disengaged parents, rebellious kids, and eroded families. I ministered to a lot of kids in crisis. But with Family Life, I’m excited to help build up families long before the opportunity for crisis comes along. I see my job as a fight for the heart of the family. We’re reaching families in every stage of life, so if things get off track, they will have the tools to build things back up. Because when your family is good, your whole world is good!
