“AT LEAST TWICE A YEAR, WE FOCUS OUR ATTENTION ON OUTREACH WITH A SERIES OF MESSAGES DESIGNED TO ENGAGE OUR FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND COWORKERS IN THOUGHTFUL CONVERSATION REGARDING THEIR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AND HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST.”

WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE IT’S BEEN A BUSY SUMMER, but I hope in the midst of all the summer activities you've been able to do what Pastor Robert encouraged us all to do in his Welcome Letter in the May/June issue of Gateway Life. He encouraged us: “If you don’t do anything else, take some time off and spend it with family.” I hope you’ve made some special family memories this summer! As our families begin to focus on the fall, our attention turns to changes in the family schedule: school for the kids, college for our older kids, and a more regimented routine for our

families. Just like your family, the schedule of activities change for our church family as well! Summer camps for the kids are over, and ministries at the church begin to settle in with new Gateway Groups and Equip classes for the adults. At least twice a year, we focus our attention on outreach with a series of messages designed to engage our family, friends, and coworkers in thoughtful conversation regarding their relationship with God and His Son, Jesus Christ. It’s much more than inviting them to church; it’s our combined effort to engage those who are in our sphere of influence in a process of spiritual formation—a process that we ourselves are engaged in. The end of summer is one of those times. We are ramping up our ministry efforts for the outreach series that begins the weekend of August 23–24 and continues for four weeks. Just like last year, it will include a weekend with comedian Michael Jr. along with Pastor Robert’s insightful messages.

We will provide you with tools to use as conversation starters to engage those around you in this exciting process. You will notice our focus on outreach in this issue of Gateway Life. You’ll love the article on Marriage 911 and Marriage & Family Ministries, (which helps couples connect with God to heal broken marriages). You’ll get a firsthand introduction to Michael Jr. and his funny and inspiring message. And you’ll get a first look at how Gateway helps kids as they return to school. Our focus on families includes a focus on children, so this issue of Gateway Life will inform you of the great resources we have for them at Gateway. Enjoy these last few weeks of summer heat and relaxation and let’s get ready for a great fall of ministry and outreach at Gateway Church!

Tell Me Something Good “I was born, baptized, and raised in a traditional Catholic church. Four years ago, I began struggling with my faith; I had a hunger and knew there had to be something more to this spirituality ‘thing.’ I bought every book and devotional on Catholicism. I went to my priest for answers. I even visited with one of the nuns who taught me in Catechism. I was soul searching and trying to find answers. At 34 years old, I did all I thought it took to get to heaven. I had a Rosary at my bedside, was in the front pew at Mass every Sunday, and knew all of the saints. I had never tithed or opened a Bible and certainly didn’t know what it meant to have a relationship with Christ. Thankfully, that nagging continued and a year ago a friend invited me to Gateway. I get emotional just thinking about that day and how my life has never been the same. I gave my life to Jesus that Sunday morning and I finally know the true meaning of being a Christian. I have a relationship with MY Jesus and I WANT MORE! Three weeks ago, while in my quiet time, I read and discovered that spending eternity in heaven has nothing to do with what I was taught for 34 years. Imagine how I felt! I thank God every day for that

nagging that never went away, and I thank Him for Gateway Church.” > Janie Bednorz

“As I was praying during the week before the first sermon of the ‘Divine Benefits’ series, I heard the phrase ‘Forget not all His benefits’ and felt impressed to look it up, focus, and meditate on it throughout the week. I found it in Psalm 103. Imagine my shock and thrill to attend the 10:45 am service at the North Fort Worth Campus the following Sunday and hear Pastor Robert say the title of the new series was ‘Divine Benefits,’ and he had only one Scripture for the series: Psalm 103! Thank you, Pastor Robert. You have opened up this scripture and helped me to understand all of His benefits in a way I could never have thought or imagined. I feel as though it is my own personal message and teaching directly from God.” > Reba McBride

“Recently I was shopping at Mardel with my oldest son. The cashier asked if we would like to donate $5 to send a Bible to Honduras. I said yes and as I went to pay, my son Dillon pulled a $10 bill from his pocket and said, ‘Here mom, buy two more.’ I cried

in the line. He smiled at me and said, ‘Mom, they need Bibles way more than we need $10.’ I love my kids’ hearts. I’m grateful for sons who love Jesus and stand for Him no matter what. Keep sowing, moms and dads. Your kids see you, hear you, and watch you. Be a good example, and you will reap what you sow. And so will the world when our kids reach the nations.” > Summer Little

“I was blessed, honored, and privileged to serve with the Amazing Kids staff at Dry Gulch, U.S.A. I always knew we had a good children’s program at Gateway, but being with them and seeing the love of God shine through to the boys and girls was amazing! God has put together the right team at the right time to bless our children. Everyone was so welcoming to me and I felt like part of the team. After getting home from the camp, I told my husband Bob we are so lucky to have these teachers loving our children on Sundays and at special events!” > Traci Zimmerman

MICHAEL JR. CATCHES YOU WITH COMEDY AND KEEPS YOU WITH THE TRUTH by DANIEL HOPKINS

8  AUGUST 2014

WHEN MICHAEL JR. WAS 16 YEARS OLD,

he made a pact with his best friend. If one of them ever cussed, the other would punch him in the chest. There was no real reason for the pact—the boys weren’t Christians—but it set Michael on a path he would follow throughout his successful career in comedy. One night, the boys went to see a movie in their hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The film stopped abruptly in the middle and the lights went up. Michael’s friend leaned over and said, “I dare you to go to the front and tell a joke.” Michael took the dare but there was one problem. “The only joke I could think of wasn’t clean,” he says. “I didn’t want to get punched, so I had 12 seconds from the time I started to walk to the front to rewrite the joke in my head.” He delivered the punch line and the laughter he received was more than he expected. “The people applauded and for the first time ever I felt amazing,” he says. It wasn’t until 10 years after that first joke that Michael became a Christian. While living in New York City, he performed at a club one night with Jerry Seinfeld and George Wallace. After the show, the club owner, who noticed Michael’s act was completely clean, invited him to church. He took him up on the offer, and that Sunday, Michael made a commitment to Christ, but he hesitated when the pastor invited all the new Christians to come to the altar. “I told myself, I wouldn’t go down to the altar until I read the whole Bible,” he says. “Of course, I didn’t have a Bible, so I didn’t know it was that big.” The next day, he was at the airport traveling to another gig and a woman randomly turned around and handed him a Bible. Michael stayed true to his commitment and began vigorously reading the Bible. “When I lived in New

York City, all I did was do comedy, eat food, and read the Bible,” he says. “I was putting in 12 hours a day reading the Bible, and the Sunday after I finished I ran up to the altar during the announcements. They asked me to come back a little later.” Since that time, Michael has been a light in the less than wholesome comedy industry, playing to late night comedy fans and churches alike. He feels just as comfortable onstage at his church home Gateway and other churches

“THE PEOPLE APPLAUDED AND FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER I FELT AMAZING” across the United States as he does in smoke-filled comedy clubs in Los Angeles and New York City. In fact, it was outside of the Laugh Factory in L.A., moments before he went onstage, that God spoke to him and changed his mindset toward comedy. “He said, ‘Instead of going up there to get laughs, I want you to give them an opportunity to laugh,’” says Michael. “This shift from getting laughs to giving laughs changed everything, because God isn’t about taking—He’s about giving.” The change motivated Michael to branch out when he goes on tour. Instead of just going to comedy clubs, he also visits nearby prisons, homeless shelters, and other places where people could use some laughter. This is where he sees his calling come to fruition. During one visit to a facility for abused children, there was a boy who had been abused so badly, he refused to remove a SpiderMan mask from his face. During Michael’s performance, the boy slowly took it off and revealed a smiling, laughing face. It’s one of Michael’s favorite moments and it fits with his mission to “comedically inspire people to walk with a purpose.” He finds helping others so fulfilling that he’s teamed up with Gateway to release Laughing on Purpose, a DVD and small group curriculum that focuses on helping people find their calling through comedy. Whether he’s at a club, prison, or church, Michael Jr. loves using his comedic gift to lift people’s spirits and give them an opportunity to laugh. And he loves to hear people laughing when they’re at church. He thinks God does too. He says, “What good Father doesn’t want to hear His children’s laughter in His house?” GL Michael Jr. will give Gateway an opportunity to laugh during weekend services on August 23–24.

Laughing on Purpose will be available on August 1. Visit michaeljr.com for more information.

S TAT E of E M E R G E N C Y How Marriage 911 came to one couple’s rescue. by DANIEL HOPKINS

BEKAH MOES WALKED CAREFULLY AND SWIFTLY through the hallway of Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine, where

she was admitted due to complications with her pregnancy. Unbeknownst to the staff, she was wearing her everyday clothes underneath her hospital gown and she was about to make a break for it. She looked to make sure the coast was clear, ducked out of a side entrance, and hopped into the passenger seat of her husband Nick’s car. The drive away from the hospital may have seemed like a carefree escape, but in reality the opposite was true. They were driving to attend Gateway’s Marriage 911 class, where they would face their problems head-on. They considered the weekly meeting their last hope in salvaging their marriage, which was fraught with infidelity and grief.

10  AUGUST 2014

Nick and Bekah Moes met during middle school in a remote Michigan town with not much to do. Both were highly involved in their church and they were married shortly after high school—she was 19 and he was 20. But the problems that plagued their marriage started long before that. “I was exposed to pornography at a young age,” says Nick. “I was quickly roped into addictive patterns.” Bekah knew Nick struggled but like so many couples, they mistakenly believed marriage would fix his addiction. “The first couple years of our marriage were what I call ‘bomb-dropping cycles,’” says Bekah. “One second everything would be fine and the next there would be crisis and drama. We just learned to live that way.” After graduating college, they moved to Dallas so Nick could pursue a job in finance. They were at Gateway on their second day, and within months Nick found a great job. However, as hard as he worked to quell his off-and-on patterns, they began accelerating. And, he was moving beyond pornography. As Nick grew more comfortable in his job, he became friendly with a woman at work. “It started with a compliment,” he says. “It made me feel great, like ‘I want more of that.’ I started crossing boundaries, and it ultimately led to an affair.” The affair lasted about two months. Nick broke it off because of his guilt, but he kept it a secret from Bekah for seven months. “At that point, I was taking it to the grave,” he says. “But God wouldn’t let that happen.” After work one day, Bekah found some of Nick’s paperwork and it led her to ask some questions. Nick broke down

“I heard the Lord say, ‘You can go, but if you stay I have a better way.’” and confessed to his affair. “Everything I believed in was shattered,” says Bekah. “I collapsed on the floor and as I did, I saw the front door of our house. It was one of the first times I heard God speak to me audibly. I heard the Lord say, ‘You can go, but if you stay I have a better way.’” As difficult as it was, Bekah trusted God and decided to stay. They immersed themselves in marriage counseling which brought some relief but it didn’t bring complete healing; however, things were starting to look up. Bekah gave birth to a baby girl and Nick had just landed a much better, higher-paying job. They made enough money to afford their dream home, so they listed their house for sale and put a contract on a beautiful new house. Days before they were to close on both houses, Nick was called into

his boss’ office. “They said, ‘We have to let you go,’” says Nick. “I was accessing pornography at work.” This is what Bekah calls “rock bottom.” “It was the first time a light bulb went off,” she says. “I realized, ‘This isn’t just something you’re struggling with—this is an addiction.’” They lost everything—their current house, their dream home—and they moved five times in four months. In the midst of it all, Bekah got some news: she was pregnant—this time with twins. Nick had already found a new job, but the pay was much lower and the health insurance deductibles were high. That problem was compounded when Bekah found out her twins were monoamniotic, meaning they had the ultra-rare condition of a shared placenta and amniotic sac. During a Saturday night service at the Southlake Campus, a desperate Nick and Bekah went to the altar for prayer and, without knowing who she was, walked right to Nancy Houston. She told them about Marriage 911, a new program designed for marriages that have suffered from infidelity and pornography addiction. It’s an intense, 13-week process that requires couples to attend each week’s meeting. The Moes viewed it as a last-ditch effort to save their marriage—there was no way they were going to turn down this opportunity. However, there was one problem. As a rule with monoamniotic twins, at 24 weeks of pregnancy, the mother is admitted to the hospital to stay until 34 weeks when a cesarean section is performed. This meant that halfway through the class she would be confined to the hospital with no way of leaving. However, once they started attending the class, they knew it was different than anything else they had tried. With the secret blessing from their doctor who happened to be a Christian, they began sneaking out. That’s when things began truly turning around for their marriage. “It turned out to be two of the most precious months of my life,” says Bekah. “What I saw happen with Nick—it was the first time I felt truly safe in my relationship.” With the help of the inaugural Marriage 911, Nick and Bekah were able to work through the most hurtful, difficult parts of their marriage and get full restoration. Now, three years later, their twin girls are perfectly healthy, Nick has a much better job, and he and Bekah have become facilitators for Marriage 911 small groups. Nick’s addiction to pornography has truly been broken. In fact, the program has a 96 percent success rate out of more than 55 couples who’ve gone through it. The Moes’ bond is stronger than it’s ever been, and now they’re helping other couples receive restoration in their marriages. “Marriage 911 allowed God to take something that the world views as dirty and use it for something beautiful,” says Nick. “God can redeem anything, and I think that’s what He wants to do in broken marriages.” GL

Marriage 911 will begin in September. For more information, email marriage911@gatewaypeople.com.

REMEMBER If you grew up in church in the ’80s and ’90s,

1

You had a really cool crossstitched cover for every Bible except for your Teen Study Bible—that one was way too cool to be covered.

2

Your mission-trip carwash fundraiser actually made cars dirtier, but you still made money.

3

You still have your collection of McGee & Me VHS tapes somewhere in the attic.

there’s a good chance you wore a W.W.J.D. bracelet, owned a Gerbert VHS tape, and knew the words to almost every Amy Grant song. You also might have done the hand signals that went with “Lord I Lift Your Name on High,” along with a few other things you’d probably like to forget. But sometimes, rather than just brushing those embarrassing memories under the rug, it’s best to celebrate them—and that’s what the following list is all about.

PEACE UNDER PRESSURE How a prophecy gave the Briscoes hope during their darkest hour. by DANIEL HOPKINS

MARIAN BRISCOE WAS IN LABOR when she walked into Harris Methodist Hospital. It was just

after midnight on August 15, 2013, and with the help of her sister-in-law, Selah, she checked in. Her husband Josh parked the car and carried in the bags, preparing for a long night ahead. For years, they had prayed for a second child, and Sidney was finally on her way. As he approached the door, he got a text message from Selah, saying, “Get up here right now! You’re going to miss the baby being born.” 14

AUGUST 2014

Josh ran to the room and made it with just minutes to spare. After one push, the midwife’s demeanor changed. Something was wrong. As Marian pushed again, Sidney’s heart rate dropped. That’s when the midwife stepped in. She looked at Josh and said, “We’re going to take her to do an emergency cesarean section right now, and you can’t come with us.” Until that moment, they didn’t think there was a problem, but it was clear something had gone terribly wrong. There was no time for an explanation, and Marian was quickly wheeled out of the room and prepped for emergency surgery. “I was in shock,” says Josh. “It was hard to process everything and not be with her—that was tough. Then I started praying.” Earlier that evening, Josh and Marian were at Gateway’s presbytery services at the Grand Prairie Campus. As participants, they received prophetic words from Bill Leckie, Pastor Preston Morrison, and Pastor Brady Boyd. Having never met Pastor Brady, it was fitting that he would speak the strongest prophetic word to the Briscoes. One of those words was for Sidney: “She’ll be a voice to the nations, like the prophet Jeremiah.” As Josh sat in the empty hospital room waiting for news about Marian and Sidney, he was comforted by Pastor Brady’s word and he knew Sidney would be alright. That word would continue to be a comfort to him as his daughter’s struggle for survival was far from over. A doctor came into the room with good news—the C-section was a success. He told Josh, “You guys really owe that midwife. If Marian would’ve pushed one more time, your daughter wouldn’t have made it, and we’d be trying to save your wife’s life.” The doctor had bad news too. He went on to explain that during surgery they discovered Marian’s uterus had fully ruptured and Sidney’s brain wasn’t getting any blood or oxygen during the last minutes of labor. She was alive, but she was born with a critically low amount of brain activity. Sidney was taken across the street to Cook Children’s Medical Center where she stayed for 72 hours. Josh stayed with Sidney as they wheeled her over. Her body was still, almost lifeless. They placed her on a cooling table to help bring her body temperature down, which would potentially increase brain activity and stop any further brain damage. However, the doctors gave Josh and Marian grim

expectations, saying cerebral palsy, blindness, mental disability, and even death were all likely. Josh and Marian considered the possibility of raising a child who would never develop mentally and need constant, around-the-clock care, but they couldn’t reconcile it with the prophetic word Pastor Brady spoke the evening before Sidney was born. They had peace the entire time as they remembered the promise from God. “The grace of God kicked in with full force unlike I had ever experienced before,” Marian says. “I didn’t panic for one second. I would just look over at Josh and say, ‘She’s obviously going to be just fine.’ I knew God set us up with the presbytery for a last bit of faith before the marathon of events.” As each hour passed, Josh and Marian’s faith grew stronger. The hospital staff took notice, and one nurse even told them, “There’s definitely a higher power involved in this.” On Sidney’s third day, it was time to run an MRI to see the extent of the damage. As the neurologist reviewed the brain scans, Marian’s heart suddenly sank. “In that moment, I questioned my faith for the first time in three days,” she says, until the doctor said, “We can’t find a single thing wrong. What a beautiful brain.” None of the other doctors had ever seen such a good outcome from a ruptured uterus scenario, and they called Sidney a little miracle baby.

“I didn’t panic for one second. I would just look over at Josh and say, ‘She’s obviously going to be just fine.’” Now, Sidney is a completely healthy and happy oneyear-old! In fact, she reached many of her first-year milestones earlier than expected. Her story is a testament to God’s goodness and to Josh and Marian’s faith in Him. “God knows us, and He knows what we need,” says Marian. “He won’t leave us to wander alone in trials, but if we put all of our trust in Him, He will be closer than we could ever imagine.” GL Josh Briscoe is a pastor at the Grand Prairie Campus. He and his wife Marian have attended Gateway since February 2013.

Presbytery is September 7 through 10 at all Gateway campuses. Visit gatewaypeople.com for times and specific campuses.

by DANIEL HOPKINS JESSICA SHEPPARD TAPPED OUT THE NOTES for “We Bow Low”

during a rehearsal for the second night of Gateway’s 2014 First Conference. Her father, Pastor Tim Sheppard, had recently written the song, and as he began to sing it, something in the atmosphere changed. It became unlike any rehearsal he had ever led. The worship team and choir joined in, and the feeling of God’s presence in the room became palpable. “One of my absolute best memories in worship will be that rehearsal and that night during worship,” says Pastor Tim. “We started running the song through—it was just piano and vocal—and all of a sudden you just felt this weight of God’s presence. I looked around and the worship team wasn’t just kneeling—they were laying on the carpet.” That’s exactly what he envisioned when he wrote the song. When Pastor Tim set out to write “We Bow Low,” he wanted to go beyond writing a worship song—he wanted to write a song about our physical actions as we praise God. “I wanted to provide a directive of how to physically respond to God,” he says. “Then I started thinking about what praise really is.” He began thinking about Psalm 100:4: “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.” This is a common verse, but within it, there is a deep well of instruction. “When you look at those words—‘thanksgiving,’ ‘praise,’ ‘be thankful,’ and ‘bless’—each comes from a different Hebrew word that has a different physical expression,” says Pastor Tim. “For example, the word ‘thanksgiving’ comes from the Hebrew word todah, which means to extend the hands. ‘Praise’ comes from the word tehillah, which means to sing aloud. And ‘bless’ is barak, which means to kneel.” This simple study of Psalm 100:4 influenced the lyrics in “We Bow Low.” The verse begins with “We bow low, we bow low / Faces down to the ground in Your presence, Lord / With our tears, we wash Your feet.” “I think we need to be more intentional when we gather corporately and realize the King is coming in,” says Tim. “How do we respond to that?” This song is about our physical actions but, even more than that, it’s about what we do when we’re in God’s presence. “It’s a mystery to us why God finds so much pleasure in our outward, physical expression to Him,” says Tim. “But He does.”

PROFILE

I’VE HAD SOME DIFFICULT TIMES in my life too and am able to use my experiences to help other people. Both of my parents have passed away—my mom when I was a teenager and my dad just a few years ago. Those were obviously very hard times, but being able to minister from that place of having your faith shaken gives those difficulties such purpose and meaning. I have a passion for people who are hurting in their darkest times. That’s when they need the church the most, and that’s what the church was to me when I was going through a difficult season. I LOVE COLLEGE FOOTBALL, but I’m not very athletic. It all started when I went to Texas A&M. Now I get sad when the season’s over. And don’t ask me about any Aggie jokes! I HAVE A DEGREE IN EDUCATION because I always wanted to be a high school English teacher. I envisioned myself inspiring a classroom full of attentive students. Then I taught eighth-grade English one year, and I was done with that! BRUNCH IS MY FAVORITE MEAL. I love going to new restaurants. Most of the time I only go to places once because there are so many new restaurants to try.

AMANDA KEY GATEWAY’S PASTOR OF COMPASSION MINISTRY

I LOVE MY JOB! When people come to the Southlake Campus asking for pastoral ministry or financial help, the team I lead is the first point of contact for them. We get to minister hope and freedom while pointing each person to the right resource or ministry. WHEN I CAME ON STAFF at Gateway in November 2003, I was the first Human Resources employee. Years later, after growing that department, I had a heart to move into more of a pastoral role. I’d always been interested in the area of compassion, so when a pastoral position became available, the timing worked out for me to take on a new role. A LOT OF THE PEOPLE WE MEET through the Compassion Ministry are going through some kind of crisis or one of the most difficult times in their lives. We have the opportunity to minister to them in that place. I love helping people and working through difficulties with them—giving hope, clarity, and kindness.

AUGUST 2014

I LOVE TO TRAVEL. One of my favorite places to visit is New York City. There’s so much to do, and I love how the culture is so different. I was just there a few months ago and went to see Idina Menzel in her new play. Another time, years ago, I went there with my dad and my sister at Christmastime. It was so much fun! ONE OF MY BIGGEST INFLUENCES is Todd Lane, my first boss here at Gateway. He has greatly affected my management and leadership. I tend to ask myself how Todd would handle certain situations—WWTD: What would Todd do? ONE OF MY FAVORITE SPEAKERS is Joyce Meyer. I’ve been listening to her broadcasts for years, and I like her style and directness. Her teaching is practical—she tells people like it is. (“I’m not where I want to be, but thank God I'm not where I used to be!”) I DON’T HAVE A MIDDLE NAME, which I think is boring, but others find it oddly intriguing.
