WELCOME

WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE WE’RE WELL INTO 2015, and I’m so excited about the impact that The Blessed Life series has had on our church so far. We just wrapped up the devotional and our churchwide fast (which means I might be eating some Blue Bell Chocolate Ice Cream as I write this), and I couldn’t be prouder of your participation.

gateway life gatewaylifemag.com David Smith, Thomas Miller, Senior Pastoral Oversight Lawrence Swicegood, Editor-in-Chief project management Tracey Schwellinger

The Blessed Life has been my life message for a long time. Many years ago, God challenged Debbie and me to live outrageously generous lives, and we’ve been on an adventure ever since. I hope that as we continue this series, you begin to realize that God is challenging you to do the same. I encourage you to seek the Lord and ask Him how you can reach another level of generosity. An easy way you can start serving and blessing others right now is through Bless A Life, which is an initiative we plan to continue after the series ends. I’m

looking forward to hearing about all the creative and generous ways you will be a blessing to others. One of my favorite stories in this issue of Gateway Life has to do with generosity. When Scott Wooley started his food truck business (page 14), he used his tips to help people in need. He even paid a few people’s monthly mortgage payments for them. Now, he has an extremely successful restaurant in Grapevine. You’ll also enjoy reading about how Gateway is working to strengthen marriages and families with our new Family Life Night (page 12). And, if you’ve ever considered going on a ministry trip, find out on page 8 how easy it is to be a part of one of our trips this year. I would love to see every member of Gateway go on a ministry trip! It’s my hope that you’ll be blessed and encouraged by reading this issue of Gateway Life.

“So honored to learn from a wise man like Jack Hayford. Thank you, Lord for blessing him to share his message.” Bobbi Jackson | via Facebook

“For years, I struggled with living carelessly. I was in college, independent, and didn’t want to answer to anyone. I was so far away from God. It took some hard lessons for me to finally realize that I was done with that lifestyle, and I took a step and joined Gateway. I cut off a lot of negative relationships, but ended up secluding myself, thinking I was safe from the world by sitting at home alone all the time. After months of being antisocial, I knew it wasn’t how God intended me to live. I decided to get connected in the church and joined a group. It has made a huge difference in such a short time and has really been a blessing in my life! It’s a great feeling to be involved with people who are in the same stage of life and who are intentionally making positive, Christ-centered relationships. I haven’t had any desire at all to go back to my life before, and I’m confident that I am finally becoming the person God intended me to be!” Jacquelyn Bushnell | via Email

“We enjoyed the profile of Pastor Gayland Lawshe in the January issue of Gateway Life. My husband and I laughed about his pet bear! He showed that it’s never too late to learn something new (Tae Kwon Do), and we loved reading about the healing and restoration in his marriage. We are glad we get to know the church staff through these great articles!” Carlos & Luvit Alvarez | via Email

Gateway is committed to seeing every person BELIEVING in Jesus, BELONGING to family, BECOMING a disciple, and BUILDING His kingdom.

“On a hospital bed in the emergency room last year, my world almost came to an end. After being admitted when the oxygen level in my blood dropped drastically, doctors told my wife they didn’t expect me to make it. I woke up six days later and found out that Deacon Larry Griffon had stopped by the hospital and prayed for me. My son-in-law later said that he could see a change happening in me while Larry prayed. How powerful is that? After four weeks in rehab, I finally was well enough to return home. This was a surprise to the doctors and nurses, but I knew better; God had worked a miracle with my recovery. My family was told two times that it was questionable whether I would survive or not, but we all witnessed God’s power in answering prayer. The first Sunday at church after returning home from rehab, my family and I went up to the front for prayer and were greeted by Deacon Larry who prayed for us again. We thank all of the Gateway family and especially Deacon Larry for the many prayers and get well wishes. Jesus never fails.” Jack Wiersma | via Email

FAVORITE MUSIC? Bluegrass. I’m kidding. I don’t really even know what that is. I genuinely have an appreciation for every genre (especially film scores), except for country music. I just can’t let myself fully go there yet. MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? As a teenager, my mom (the worship leader) had me do an interpretive dance in front of my church. As she was playing the piano, she said, “Jelani, don’t you want to dance before the Lord?” I absolutely did not, but you don’t say no to Mom. I’m pretty sure I had an out-of-body experience. PROUDEST MOMENT? Probably when my dad held my daughter, Judah, for the first time. She looked so much like me when she was born, my brother called her Benjamin Button (a little, old version of me). IF YOU COULD GET COFFEE WITH ANYONE LIVING OR DEAD … I don’t typically drink coffee, but I would sip a caramel apple cider with Martin Luther King Jr., King David and one of his mighty men, and Denzel Washington. DO YOU HAVE ANY HOBBIES? Biking (not with spandex on), fishing (typically in people’s neighborhood ponds—I owe some additional HOA fees), reading, going on cruises, and attending theatrical/musical productions with the lovely Mrs. Erin Lewis. AN EXCERPT FROM STRONG WOMEN AND THE MEN WHO LOVE THEM BY TOM AND JAN LANE

10  FEBRUARY 2015

ROMANTIC THOUGHTS OF RELATIONAL BLISS have their roots in fairy tales. Cinderella, the attractive young woman who was mistreated by her mean stepmother and stepsisters, finds help through a fairy godmother. A pumpkin is turned into a coach, mice become tailors and coachmen, and Cinderella captures the heart of the prince at the ball. The story ends with the declaration that they married and lived happily ever after. We think, if that can happen to Cinderella, why not to me? We need “the rest of the story,” as Paul Harvey used to say. The greatest joy and fulfillment in marriage comes as the result of two hearts becoming one. Achieving this result involves a process that allows the uniqueness of the two individuals to be blended together. The expression of each person’s gifts enhance the relationship as each one values and supports the other without one person dominating or repressing the other. Our own perspective is uniquely individual and when blended with our spouse’s, it gives a greater perspective to life’s circumstances and reflects the partnership God designed for marriage. This is the process that produces the fullest results from blending our lives together into one focus, one purpose, and one heart with multiple reflections as it produces fulfillment and happiness for both parties in the marriage. This is God’s perfect design. The truth is, not every woman is Cinderella and not every man is Prince Charming! Every person is uniquely created, so there are as many personality dynamics as there are people in the world. When it comes to building a marriage partnership, every relationship is one-of-akind, meaning we do not uniformly reflect the people depicted on screen. When two different personalities come together, they create a unique combination that must be considered in order to grow the relationship. Each couple has to contend with their differences, all with the aim of discovering what it means, in their relationship, to become uniquely one—reflecting the partnership God designed us to experience in marriage. As we build a partnership with our spouse, there is one aspect of our lives regardless of our individuality that all couples must address. We must address the way we communicate, deal with conflict, and make decisions to ensure that both parties are honored and represented in the relationship. When a woman is confident, gifted, and strong, her aggressive actions and reactions may come across as dominant, controlling, or even offensive. When a man is confident but reflective and nonconfrontational, his slowness to engage can come across as passive, weak, and uncaring. If a couple with these tendencies wants to build a deep and satisfying marriage, they need to address the issues that crop up through these varied expressions of their personalities.

The passive husband is disposed toward avoiding conflict in an effort to create peace and harmony at any price. His approach makes communication less direct and more subtle, as he believes that peace and harmony can be achieved with less emotional friction. For an outgoing wife, this approach is unclear, evasive, and confusing, leaving her perplexed

about her next step. The aggressive woman’s nature is to engage her husband on issues that impact their lives with little regard for peace and harmony. She is single-minded in her pursuit of connection and finding solutions to the circumstances being faced in the relationship. The assertive

FAMILY LIFE NIGHT IS DESIGNED TO STRENGTHEN EVERYONE IN THE FAMILY by Daniel Hopkins

12  FEBRUARY 2015

EVERYONE IS PART OF A FAMILY. Whether you’re single, a married couple with kids, or a single parent, we’re all going through life together. That’s why Gateway is introducing Family Life Night, which is designed to strengthen us, no matter where we are in life. We’ll hear from dynamic speakers including Dr. John Townsend, Lisa Bevere, Jimmy Evans, and many of Gateway’s pastors as they tackle important topics that relate to us all and help us grow in practical ways. “We’re all in a different season of family life,” says Pastor Mike Guzzardo, who oversees Family Life Night. “This night gives us an opportunity to come together and equip ourselves to do well in the season we’re in.”

How It Works There are two options at Family Life Night. The first option starts in the Auditorium with worship followed by a speaker. After that, attendees will be invited to form small process groups to discuss the speaker’s message. During this time, teens and preteens will have their own classes and learn about the night’s topic in a relatable way. “Both parents and kids will be learning about the same subject matter,” says Kathy Boyle, Associate Pastor of Family Life. Our goal is to promote ‘tabletalk,’ which will provide the family with an opportunity to come around the dinner table and have a discussion about it.” The second option starts in various classrooms where several different teaching tracks are offered. The subject matter of these tracks include marriage, premarriage, parenting, intimacy, single parenting, blended families, and single life. Children’s Ministry is available.

Building Your House

Family Life Night starts February 23 and will meet at 7:00 pm every Monday at the Southlake Campus. deliberate planning. “It’s important that we take the time to proactively build our families,” says Mike. “You wouldn’t build your house by calling a bricklayer, a plumber, and a window guy and saying, ‘Alright guys, go to work.’ You need a plan! But that’s the approach we tend to take when we build and plan our families and lives. The family unit is God’s design. Morals, identity, and worldview are all communicated within the family, so we’re here to help build it the right way.” So beginning February 23, make sure to check out Family Life Night. No matter where you are in life, there will be something for you. After all, we’re all part of the same family. GL For more information, email familylife@gatewaypeople.com.

When it comes to building our families, Gateway is dedicated to a purposeful approach. With so many reactive programs such as crisis marriage and divorce care, Family Life Night seeks to build up and strengthen families before they ever get to a crisis stage. And we’re doing so by encouraging

BLESSING PEOPLE, ONE TACO AT A TIME BY DANIEL HOPKINS

SCOTT WOOLEY DOESN’T HAVE AN OFFICE. Instead, you’ll find him perched at the end of the bar at So-Cal Tacos, the restaurant he owns in Grapevine. In front of him sits a computer, which he frequently leaves so he can run a plate of “gnarly nachos” to a guest, clear a table, or make sure every detail of his dining room is in order. There’s a distinct Southern California vibe in the restaurant from the surfboards that decorate the wall right down to Scott’s laid back, 14  FEBRUARY 2015

surfer-dude accent. He carries himself like a guy who’s been in the restaurant industry his entire life. But he truth is, he’s relatively new to the business. So-Cal Tacos was born when Scott was given a second chance. In 2010, he was diagnosed with a Brachial Plexus nerve tumor. It was inoperable, so the only thing doctors could do was prescribe pain medication. Doped up and depressed, Scott lost hope. He worried about his wife and how their three children would grow up without a father.

California comes to Grapevine in the So-Cal Tacos dining room.

Then one Sunday at Gateway’s NRH Campus, he went to Pastor Kam Hunt at the altar to receive prayer for his pain. But Kam didn’t pray for his pain—he prayed for his healing. “I never thought to pray for healing,” says Scott, a Gateway member since 2010. “I always prayed that God would help me manage the pain.” He didn’t think much about it until the next day when he woke up with no pain at all. After a few weeks of feeling great, he met with his neurosurgeon who ran a series of scans. “His jaw hit the floor,” says Scott. “He told me ‘There’s nothing there—it’s gone!’”

“I WAS BARELY PAYING MY BILLS AT HOME, BUT I WAS ABLE TO GIVE PEOPLE CASH TO PAY FOR MONTHLY MORTGAGE PAYMENTS AND CAR PAYMENTS.” Scott felt like he was given a fresh start and a story to tell. So he quit his high paying job in real estate and bought a food truck. “We prayed about it and almost overnight we created the brand for So-Cal Tacos,” says Scott. However, when all excitement around his plan subsided, he began having doubts. Was he really supposed to take a risk this big, especially now that he and his wife were expecting a fourth child?

The feeling of uncertainty lasted until a friend called and said he had a message from God. “He told me to read Luke 9:13,” says Scott, pointing out that this friend isn’t exactly a theologian. “It’s the verse where Jesus tells his disciples to feed the 5,000. In that moment, I knew what I had to do.” With that confirmation, Scott dove into his new business venture. The first year was difficult, but he and his first employee (who still works with him today) stayed focused on the goal of sharing his story and blessing the community. They devised a plan in which all of the tips the food truck received each month would be given away to struggling individuals, families, and single parents. “From the beginning, we identified that our tip money needed to be given away,” says Scott. “I was barely paying my bills at home, but I was able to give people cash to pay for monthly mortgage payments and car payments.” Scott didn’t run his food truck with profits in mind, but instead he focused on how he could use it to help others. Over time, business started booming. On October 15, 2012, the first year anniversary of the So-Cal Tacos food truck, he was invited to serve tacos to Gateway Conference attendees and volunteers. “Guess how many people we served that day?” he asks. “Five thousand! Isn’t that radical?”

But shortly after that day—the most successful one in the truck’s history—God told Scott to do the unthinkable. “He told me to close the truck,” he says. “I didn’t understand it. We were doing so much good for so many people. But God just said, ‘trust Me.’” Scott obeyed, but he became depressed for a few months until his business partner called with a question: “Have you ever thought of turning the food truck concept into a restaurant?” After a few meetings, a deal was inked, and just over a year ago the first So-Cal Tacos restaurant opened on Hall-Johnson Road in Grapevine. The restaurant concept has been so successful that Scott will be expanding to new locations very soon. “We’ll add one more store this year and after that we’ll begin

to double on an annual basis,” he says. But he hasn’t lost sight of the original goal of the restaurant—building the kingdom. “Our culture is to give love, receive love, repeat the process,” he says. A few months ago, at the restaurant’s one-year anniversary party, a woman sat next to Scott’s wife, Susan, and they began talking. The woman, a single mother of four, had no idea about So-Cal’s history, but when she found out the restaurant started as a food truck, she started to cry. Several years ago, she had been struggling financially. Her church, Compass Christian in Colleyville, asked Scott if he would donate money to help the woman, and he gave $1,800 but never knew what happened after that. All she knew was that a man who runs a taco truck donated the money.

16  FEBRUARY 2015

“OUR CULTURE IS TO GIVE LOVE, RECEIVE LOVE, REPEAT THE PROCESS.” The night of the party, the woman made the connection and was able to tell Scott and his wife about the difference So-Cal Tacos had made in her life. She told him the words her son said when she received the tip money several years ago—words that go so well with what Jesus told His disciples in Luke 9:13: “Mom, that means we can eat!” GL Watch Scott's video testimony at gatewaylifemag.com. One day, when I get married, every day will be like Valentine’s Day. JASON TAM, JOSIAH SOLIS, AMANDA KEY, AND CHELSEA SEATON. JOSIAH SOLIS – MINISTRY COORDINATOR, FREEDOM

JASON TAM – PASTOR, WORSHIP CONNECTION

For me, Valentine’s Day is just an ordinary day. But there’s something about it that makes you feel pressured to ask someone out. You see your friends who are married and have kids and you want the same thing. I have to remind myself

18  FEBRUARY 2015

I love seeing people go all out on Valentine’s Day. My parents are like that. I’m the oldest of 10 kids—so they clearly like each other. They are romantic in an almost cheesy way, but I love it. I agree with Jason, Valentine’s Day is just an ordinary day with an extraordinary amount of pink in stores. And if days like that bring out feelings

of frustration and sadness, it’s important to find good friends and express those feelings to them. But you don’t want to drown in self-pity and post about it on social media. Nobody is attracted to that, and it just turns people away. My advice is to not make it about you—just have fun with it. The truth is, if you’re not happy as a single person, you’re probably not going to be happy as a married one. So enjoy life!

AMANDA KEY – PASTOR, COMPASSION MINISTRIES

I always treat Valentine’s Day like a normal day. For me, it’s not a difficult day. Sometimes other people can be awkward about it and have pity on a single person. In the same way, sometimes people relate to you differently when you’re single versus in a relationship. They think you have more value or credibility when you are part of a couple. But I believe individuals have so much value—in every season of their life. When you’re single you should live it up! Have as much fun as you can. Serve at church, have a variety of friends of different ages, go on fun vacations, and get a job you love. Do it all while you can. Enjoy the benefits of this season of life!

CHELSEA SEATON – ASSOCIATE PASTOR, PINK

One of my favorite things to do on Valentine’s Day—and this is going to sound overly spiritual—is to help others have an awesome day! Working with a bunch of guys at the North Fort Worth Campus, I like to give them tips on how they can make the day more special for their wives. I’m like, “Go for it dudes!” However, one of my biggest pet peeves about Valentine’s Day, and relationships in general, is when people try to play matchmaker for the wrong reasons. People see that I’m single and they act desperate on my behalf. I’m not desperate—I’m okay with being single! I don’t need them to be desperate for me! Most single people I know feel the same way. When the matchmaker is so desperate on my behalf that they’ll set me up with anyone breathing, it’s frustrating. One time, I was set up with a guy who told me he liked the smell of weed, followed by the story of his first DWI—the keyword in that sentence is first. The person who set me up had no idea about any of this, but their rights as a matchmaker were revoked. Instead of dwelling on what I don’t have right now, I’m working on improving what I do have, which is myself. And I encourage all single people to do the same. GL

wife’s approach makes this process focused and direct and confrontational when needed, in an effort to arrive at an immediate result—all of which causes her passive husband to back away from an encounter with her. The temptation with this dynamic is to build coping mechanisms to deal with our differences rather than address them. Believe us, we get that. But rather than build coping mechanisms that would allow us to “get by” or ignore and deny our frustrations until they became so toxic that we can no longer stand each other, we choose to act with faith and diligence each day to address issues in our personal lives and as a couple that produce barriers in our marriage. We refuse to allow bitterness or unforgiveness to become a part of our relationship, as we know the fruit of bitterness and unforgiveness ultimately destroys each person and the marriage by ruining the loving commitment the two people share. While our marriage is not perfect—we are still growing and learning—we are committed to each other, we love each other, and we have learned to successfully blend our very different personalities and perspectives into a happy, satisfying marriage. We share what we have learned here with you in the confidence that God will help you apply it to your situation in just the way you need to strengthen, encourage, and connect your lives in a marriage that satisfies all your dreams and desires! PROFILE

I WAS ABOUT FIVE YEARS OLD when I raised my hand to receive the Lord. I brought the neighbor girl to church, and I thought she had raised her hand, so I raised mine just to help her not feel so alone. Then I had a real encounter with the Lord. It was funny because I later realized that she hadn’t raised her hand, but it was a life-changing moment with the Lord. It was an “accidental” salvation (laughs)! GROWING UP, my father and mother were radical Christians. They followed the idea that we were to sell everything we had. For a lot of my life prior to kindergarten, we lived in campgrounds like hippies. We were incredibly poor, had no money at all because the mentality was that you just lived off the land, and you asked God to provide. But we also saw God do miracles. In fact, I don’t remember a time when miracles, signs, and wonders were ever questioned. I saw people’s legs grow, and I was there when people got their hearing back. When we needed groceries, my parents would pray and bags of groceries would show up on the doorstep.

RITA SPRINGER RITA SPRINGER IS A PASTOR AND ARTIST IN RESIDENCE AT GATEWAY CHURCH.

MY PATH TO GATEWAY goes back more than 16 years. When Pastor Thomas Miller ran Christ For The Nations, he invited me to minister there several times. He says it was during that time he felt we would one day be at the same church together. When Gateway started, he would invite me to be a guest artist at certain events, and he would joke around, saying, “Are you sure you don’t want to come to Gateway?” I always thought he was kidding. On a whim in 2012, when I was living in North Carolina, I emailed Thomas and wrote, “Can you use someone like me at Gateway?” I expected him to say, “Not right now,” but within 24 hours, he replied and said, “We’ve been waiting 13 years for you to make this decision.” I ADOPTED A SON THREE YEARS AGO, and the biggest change in my life has been a sense of settling down. This is the first time I’ve ever been on a church staff in the course of my ministry career. I’ve always been a worship leader and I’ve always traveled, but it’s mostly been in a guest capacity.

28  FEBRUARY 2015

AT ONE POINT my father met a man who gave him a job as the caretaker of his 350-acre ranch. We lived like paupers in that house. My father would go to a nearby drug rehab center and bring drug addicts and alcoholics over for healing and prayer weekends we would host at the ranch. The rehab center would send the food, and we would have these huge barbecues. I grew up seeing God profoundly change people’s lives in front of my house. Now, when I read scriptures about helping the poor and needy, I think I know what that looks like. My front yard looked like that. Having radical parents gave me a radical heart for Jesus and that is what channels itself through my worship. I believe God speaks to us and loves the downtrodden. I’m passionate about that because of the way I grew up. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, my siblings (two sisters and three brothers) took piano and vocal lessons. At the age of 11, 12, and 13, when none of my siblings were home, I would just journal to the Lord on the piano. I had no clue it was worship, but it was. I’m so grateful for those days. In my career as a worship leader, I’ve never found a night of worship that comes close to what I experienced in those days.
