Scripture, God told His people to write things down so the next generation can read it. In Habakkuk 2:2 (nkjv), He said, “‘Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.’” A testimony accelerates the next person’s walk with God and encourages him or her. That’s why the stories in Gateway Life are so important. Over the last two years, we’ve written about people who have seen
“BEGINNING WITH THIS ISSUE, GATEWAY LIFE IS NOW A MONTHLY MAGAZINE.”
WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE two years ago, we launched Gateway Life with a single purpose: to connect our growing Gateway family to what God is doing at our church. At the time, we had around 24,000 active members and needed a new way to keep everyone informed about news and events happening at Gateway. So every two months, we released a new issue highlighting people, ministries, news, and events. Now, we have grown to more than 36,000 active members (many more than the 30 people who met in my living room when we started Gateway 14 years ago). Because of this tremendous growth, we have more

news, more events, and more stories to tell than ever! That’s why I’m so excited to announce that beginning with this issue, Gateway Life is now a monthly magazine. One of the biggest changes you’ll notice is the announcements page (pg. 16–17), which is now unique to each campus. All the information that was in each weekend’s bulletin is now located there along with a schedule of weekly events. Think of it as a place where you can connect with other Gateway people and be used by God to affect someone’s life. But don’t stop there, because Gateway Life will continue to have stories of people whose lives have been impacted and changed through the ministries of Gateway. However, these stories really aren’t stories—they’re testimonies. And testimonies are memorials to God’s faithfulness and goodness. All through
breakthroughs in their marriages, health, and finances. You need to know these are not just stories about what God’s doing through the church but also stories of what God is doing through you. I often say how proud I am of your generosity. It’s because of your generosity that these testimonies and opportunities for kingdom building are possible. You’re making an incredible difference. As your pastor, I am so proud of you, and I’m excited for you to read about how God is blessing others through you. Gateway Life is not just a magazine—it’s a connection to the heartbeat of this church. Welcome to the new Gateway Life.

DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY IN ONE WORD. Vivacious! FAVORITE MUSIC? I’m in a John Coltrane phase right now. MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? On a trip to Greece to work with The A21 Campaign, I threw up for nearly the entire flight from Dallas to London while Pastor Jan Greenwood held my head. WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? I wanted to be a teacher. It would make me sound egotistical if I said it was because I liked talking in front of the room, but it was probably because I liked talking in front of the room (laughs).
revealing messianic ministries:
One article that really stood out for me was “Revealing Messianic Mysteries” by Carina Smith. This simple article helped me get a better feel of what this special ministry is about and how cool it is to be a part of a church that puts so much value into a Messianic community. I’ve already penciled it in my schedule and will be attending the June 7 service with my two kiddos for the first time.
PROUDEST MOMENT? Watching my sons become great dads.

Tell Me Something Good “Last Sunday was the first opportunity to bring my five-year-old granddaughter, Maleah, to church at the Southlake Campus and she hesitantly agreed to go to Amazing Kids. After picking her up, we only walked a few steps when she asked how long before she could come back. At least three times every day, she recounts the message, laughs about the pickle fight, counts down how many more days until next Sunday, and sings the Zacheus song. So I send this message as a thank you for the awesome ministry you provide for our little ones and to encourage each of you with her story. And, just in case anyone is wondering if what you do makes an impact, I want you to know that indeed it does! By sharing your gifts and talents with my granddaughter for an hour last Sunday, she has enthusiastically shared her church experience, Zacheus, and Jesus with at least 30 children and adults so far this week!” >> Mary Oglesby testimonies from kairos 2: →→ “I learned there is a difference between sexuality and sinful sexual behavior. I now understand that sexuality is from God and is a gift.” →→ “At the age of 66, this was my first ‘sex talk,’ and I had no idea it was this beautiful.”
→→ “The abandonment of my mother in my toddler stage helped play a role in my addiction, and I had no idea. Shame kept me bound until I learned today that shame and guilt are Satan’s counterfeit for God’s gift of conviction. I let shame and guilt in to become part of my identity. Today, I had the revelation that I am not powerless against the enemy.” “After 4+ years here at Gateway, God is moving me out to work in the mission field in Hollywood, California. Being at Gateway has been a gift from God and has given me the tools I need to fulfill the work He’s called me to do. Gateway will always be a home base for me, and I will continue to watch online.” >> Annie Marlow
“Curt Castenson and his wife were at church when the Gateway Groups commercial about the motorcycle group ran. He has been involved with four-wheel trucks and mud racing for a long time, and as they left church, he told her he’d like to do an ‘off-road’ men’s group. He also loaned his huge, camouflage off-road truck to be part of the outside décor for Men’s Summit.” >> Raul Cabrera

Brazil, to participate in rescue efforts during the World Cup. The World Cup is one of the top events used by sex traffickers who have kidnapped girls from all over the world. Because of Gateway, its youth ministry, and outreach efforts, Victoria has been able to find her calling in life at a young age. We consider this a blessing for both her and our family. We believe Victoria’s story could inspire others, especially youth who continue to remain plugged in to the many resources available at Gateway.” >> April Beling testimony from id seminar: “At the id Seminar, I was freed from role constraints to focus on the mission that God has for me. I learned why working on our strengths is exponentially more effective than compensating for weaknesses and that our passions are tied to our strengths and gifts to fulfill God’s purpose for us. My wife is so jazzed that she laughs out loud just thinking about the results of this seminar. I ask her why she is laughing and she says she is so excited about what God is doing. Imagine the whole world joyously doing what they were created for and succeeding at incredible levels. This is heaven on earth, the kingdom of God at hand, released into our lives. Incredibly insightful identification of who we are as God created us uniquely into being.”

How a Simple Act of Tithing Made Way for a Miracle
Dan Stormes opened the email with high hopes. “Thank you for applying, but …,” it said. He didn’t need to read any further. It was another in a long line of disappointing attempts to land a new job. He had grown tired of working the night shift six or seven nights a week at a technology company, which kept him from seeing much of his wife, Jeanette, and their two college-age kids. It was a grind that didn’t pay much in return. Jeanette was used to making the best out of every situation. It’s what you might expect from a woman who had seen her daughter fight and ultimately beat neuroblastoma (a form of cancer found most commonly in infants) at a young age. Frankly Jeanette, a remarkably upbeat woman for having been through so many trials, had an uncanny ability to do a lot with just a little. For the last 22 years, she had run a tight budget for the family, and that meant there was no money for cable television, cell phones—or tithe. “For a long time, I had been completely against tithing as a rule of thumb,” says Dan. “It was like, if God needed the money, then He would have it. He doesn’t need my money.” Despite Dan’s view on tithing, the couple had been slowly chipping away at their debt for just over three years after attending Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University program. However, they just couldn’t seem to get the financial breakthrough they were working so hard to achieve. The family was at a low point, but all that was about to change. Dan and Jeanette had recently become members of Gateway, but Dan stayed on the fringes. One day on the way to work, he decided to listen to a cd that had the sermon entitled “Jake’s Motel,” during which Pastor Robert tells the story of how God changed his life in an instant. The same thing was about to happen to Dan. At the end of the sermon, Pastor Robert asked the congregation about their salvation. “I couldn’t say for certain that I was saved,” says Dan. “I rededicated my life to Christ and I felt a change—I broke down in tears.” Over the next month, he was baptized and involved himself in as many church activities as possible. This meant signing up for Equip classes with Jeanette, where another big change came. They decided to divide and conquer, so he attended one class and Jeanette attended a Stewardship Equip class. After the class, she approached Pastor Leo Sabo
and explained their financial situation. “He guided me to some scriptures and assured me that if we gave back what already belongs to the Lord that He would reward us,” says Jeanette. After praying and studying the scriptures Pastor Leo provided, Dan changed his heart in regard to tithing. He recalls telling his wife, “We just need to knuckle down and give it.” On February 28, 2013, Dan’s payday, Jeanette logged onto Gateway’s website and submitted their first tithe payment. The couple believed in miracles—their daughter had been cancer-free for more than a decade—but they weren’t prepared for the email Dan would receive less than 24 hours after tithing. Somehow, the owner of Pioneer Cable had found Dan’s resume (he never even sent in an application) and offered him a job. Not only
“IF WE GAVE BACK WHAT ALREADY BELONGS TO THE LORD … HE WOULD REWARD US” were the hours much better, the salary was more than Dan wanted and there were health benefits too—icing on the cake for a family who has paid more than a small amount of hospital bills. “Immediately our finances made a complete turnaround,” says Jeanette. Now, other than their mortgage, they are completely debt-free, having paid off nearly $30,000 in personal debt and 18 years’ worth of hospital debt. (After they began tithing, they found out about a program that completely erased their mountain of hospital debt.) Most importantly—even more so than their decision to tithe—was their decision to do something they had never done in their 22-year marriage: put God first in every aspect of their lives. “Our walk with the Lord together really bonded Dan and me. It bonded our whole family,” says Jeanette. “He is the center of our marriage now, our focus. He is always there for us no matter our needs. He is always in control.” GL

THE GLOBAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT INSPIRES PEOPLE IN REMARKABLE WAYS

Attending the Global Leadership Summit is a lot to take in all at once, but it’s possible. And the benefits are remarkable. With so many extraordinary speakers, including Bill Hybels, Patrick Lencioni, Brené Brown and Louie Giglio, the encouragement and motivation you’ll receive for your personal and professional life starts from the moment you take your seat and doesn’t end until you leave. Gateway has hosted the Summit for the past five years, and it has inspired many people to do incredible things. Here are some of their stories.
“The 2013 Global Leadership Summit was pivotal for me to continue to press forward, obey God’s direction, follow with obedience (even when it doesn’t make sense), and launch a nonprofit! Only by His divine connections have we moved forward. Each speaker impacted me in various ways, and we’re using different aspects of what we learned for our nonprofit school program, The Bee Friendly Boot Camp! The biggest impact was Pastor Bill Hybels sharing his testimony about their tremendous single parent/low-income program. What impacted me? Learning how he almost didn’t do it, and hearing his tender testimony of how many lives never

would have been impacted. God used that sermon to impact me not to give up and to press forward launching the Bee Friendly program. The Global Leadership Summit is forever ingrained in my mind for how God used it to motivate me to move forward with what He’s given me to do.” —Kristi Kennedy “After serving a nonprofit ministry for 24 years in executive leadership, I had been to ‘too many to count’ conferences on leadership, administration, motivation, and becoming the best you can be! But I was feeling some stagnation in my spirit and in my passion for my
work. I needed a jump-start. That’s when I decided to attend the Global Leadership Summit at Gateway’s North Fort Worth Campus last August. I was a bit of a skeptic, since I knew that the entire conference would be by video and wasn’t sure how effective that might be. But that thought was shattered with challenging speakers, anointed musical interludes, times of reflection, and artistry I had never seen before. I was amazed at the quality of speakers. Each one, uniquely qualified to speak on their given subject, and each one, building on the thoughts of the others until I was about to explode with encouragement and anticipation of what God could do through me and the kingdom assignment He had given me to accomplish in my lifetime.” —Christy Wilkerson “After the most recent Global Leadership Summit, my head was spinning with many powerful ideas presented by the speakers. What a privilege it was to hear the best speakers and ministry and leadership experts in the world. My main takeaway came from the opening message by Bill Hybels, in which he talked about courage. Throughout his message he referred to Joshua 1:9 (niv), which says, ‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and
“If we were to travel to each speaker and get quality time with them, it would cost tens of thousands of dollars. That’s why the Global Leadership Summit is so valuable, because you get all these leaders who have decades of experience and you can sit and listen to their leadership knowledge. It’s like being in a university class all over again, but you’re being taught a wealth of practical knowledge, not just information. It’s being passed on to you. Each leader has a different skillset but the Summit helps you apply the things they pass along in your everyday leadership role. It also helps teach your team those concepts. People attending the Summit can expect to have a creative mind explosion that will help them make a difference in their families, businesses, communities, and even their country. Be sure to take notes so you can go back later and dig a little deeper into each speaker’s message.” —Barney Paradise “I’m a military guy and I’ve studied quite a few leaders in that arena, including Colin Powell. I’ve read his books, and I’ve thought about what I would ask him if I had the opportunity to meet him. Well, at Global Leadership Summit, Bill Hybels interviewed him and asked some of the questions I had. It felt very personal. One of the most

My wife’s father passed away, then her mother passed away a few months later. My mother, who had begun to show obvious signs of dementia, had to go into a rehab facility, probably for the rest of her life. On top of that, my wife and I have both had health issues. *** LET ME LEARN BY PARADOX THAT THE WAY DOWN IS THE WAY UP, THAT TO BE LOW IS TO BE HIGH, THAT THE BROKEN HEART IS THE HEALED HEART, THAT THE CONTRITE SPIRIT IS THE REJOICING SPIRIT, THAT THE REPENTING SOUL IS THE VICTORIOUS SOUL, THAT TO HAVE NOTHING IS TO POSSESS ALL, THAT TO BEAR THE CROSS IS TO WEAR THE CROWN, THAT TO GIVE IS TO RECEIVE, THAT THE VALLEY IS THE PLACE OF VISION.
The other day my son Grady asked me if I’m famous. I gladly told him no and assumed the conversation would be over. However, he followed up his question with another one: “How can we make you famous?” At that point I decided it was time for us to have a discussion about this topic. I explained to him that I have no desire to be famous, and I gave him many examples to justify my stance. I told him how difficult it would be to have a private life and how people would want to talk to you everywhere you go. He then told me all the reasons I was wrong and how he thought it would be wonderful to be famous. As he was speaking, my childhood was calling, reminding me of the days I used to daydream about being rich and famous. I remembered I tried not to be selfish about it. I dreamt of all the good things I would be able to accomplish and all the people I would be able to help. As Grady continued to hypothesize out loud, I wasn’t sure if I was waiting for the spell of fame to be cast or to be broken. Why is the desire for fame built into us at such a young age? Is it a power that is to be used wisely or one to be avoided at all costs? Jesus regularly taught by paradox: “He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it,” Matthew 10:39 (nkjv); “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” Acts 20:35 (nkjv); and, “So the last shall be first, and the first last,” Matthew 20:16 (kjv). There are many more instances of this throughout Jesus’ teachings. It almost seems like Jesus was stuck on opposite day. I wonder if choosing not to be famous will make you famous? After all, Jesus is famous. Maybe He has a distaste for fame. He spoke about it in Mark 10:43–45: “But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of
all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” This question seeped into my cortex, set up camp, and refused to leave. What if you are so good at being like Jesus that it makes you famous? Maybe it’s not about the fame but the desire. Maybe we are called to learn by paradox. Maybe we shouldn’t aspire to fame, but instead resist it because He is so famous. In this case, it’s not for us to emulate Him but to rest in who He is and what He has already provided. Our strength is His strength, our fortune is His fortune, and our fame is His fame. Not only that, but our weakness is His strength as well as our poverty and our ill repute. The world desires fame in the same way children do. Fame is the mirage of open arms of love fueled by the desire to be accepted. Fame fools you into thinking you are accepted by all, which cools the burn of not knowing if the Creator of the universe accepts you. It hides who you really are and crops the rough edges, prepping for mass approval, yet never answers the question that lingers: Does the one person who knows everything there is to know about me still accept me? Fame will never fulfill the need of acceptance that lives in us from a very young age. Fame is a medicine we use that is mildly therapeutic but never heals the wound. I went back later and told my son I discovered that I am famous. God knows everything about me and has seen every bad thing I have ever done, and He made everything that exists so He has seen some pretty cool stuff, and He still loves me. That is the true paradox: If you are accepted by the one, there is no need to be accepted by all. GL Josh Morris is the Pastor of Freedom Ministries and has been on staff at Gateway since 2003.

One of the most surprising things about Rebecca Hart is that she’s relatively new to songwriting, because when you hear her sing, you don’t hear the voice of a novice; you hear a powerful, pristine tone few professional singers ever achieve. Her decades-long study of bel canto, a classical vocal technique associated with Italian opera, would have you believe she’s a veteran songwriter. However, the Gateway Worship Pastor’s newest song, “Breath of God,” came from her first-ever songwriting trip to Nashville last year, where she teamed up with various professional songwriters in hopes of penning something great. “It was pretty intimidating because in Nashville, in order to make a living in songwriting, you have to be really good at what you do,” she says. “But I got a song out of every session, was affirmed in my songwriting, and made some great friends.” The songwriter she connected with the most was Michael Farren (the writer behind Michael W. Smith’s “Let It Rain”). Rebecca approached her session with a strong idea and he helped it take shape. “I had been spending a lot of time reading about Ezekiel, the dry bones, and the breath of God and how in Genesis, God breathed into man,” she says. “Every time I would read the Word, it would always come back to the breath of God. I just sat down at a piano and started hearing this melody and the lyrics, and that ended up being the chorus for ‘Breath of God.’” The song that resulted from their session came out like a modern hymn. The lyrics are timely in that they go hand in hand with portions of Gateway’s 2014 It Is Written devotional, in which Pastor Robert talks about Ezekiel and the valley of the dry bones. As the song begins, Rebecca writes, “What power of earth, what strength of man / Makes dust alive and bone to dance / Creating beauty unsurpassed? Only You.” The chorus lifts in a way that is both soaring and subdued: “Oh breath of God, breathe in our souls / Cleanse by the fire, heal by the oil / Set bright Your love, alight us all.” The song is the first of many we can expect from Rebecca. Her continued songwriting friendship with Michael Farren seems promising as well, but it will be tough to top “Breath of God.” “We’ve actually written a few songs together since this one,” she says. “But ‘Breath of God’ is still my favorite.” You can hear “Breath of God” on Women of Faith Presents Gateway Worship Revival, available at Passages and on iTunes.

and Pastor David asked me to come and further develop the Tech Arts Department here at Gateway. ONE OF MY BIGGEST PASSIONS is to give younger kids an opportunity to learn how to work with Gateway’s Tech Arts Department. I owe my whole career to a guy who rolled the dice on an 11-year-old kid. He put me behind the soundboard and the choir would throw spitballs at me because I wasn’t getting it right. But I got better. If he would’ve said, “You can’t do this until you’re 18,” odds are I probably would’ve gone into a different career. If you can be professional and take direction, you can be on the team. It doesn’t matter how old you are. I’ve got 9- and 10-year-old camera operators whose feet don’t even touch the ground when sitting in the operator chair. That kind of experience will be with them for the rest of their lives. YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW that I don’t have a lot of technology at home. I only recently got rid of my crt television and replaced it with a flatscreen. I just got my first dvr too! IF I HAD TO CHOOSE between audio, video and lighting, well, when God spoke, the first thing that happened was audio (Genesis 1:3). As far as I am concerned, audio is the most important thing (laughs).
DAVID LEUSCHNER DAVID LEUSCHNER IS AN ASSOCIATE SENIOR DIRECTOR AND HAS BEEN ON STAFF SINCE NOVEMBER 2006. HE AND HIS WIFE NICOLE HAVE ONE SON, JUSTIN.
I’VE WORKED in various media, news, and entertainment environments that have allowed me to work with—and around—people like President George H. W. Bush, Senator John Kerry, Steven Curtis Chapman, Petra, and Newsboys. I ENTERED MY FIELD when I was 11 years old. I started volunteering at a church. When I turned 15, I got my first job working on a late night talk show at a local Christian tv station. It had a really “newsy” format and a lot of political figures came in. ONE OF MY FUNNIEST MOMENTS happened when I was operating a camera during a doctors forum and they were having a detailed discussion about blood. I started getting really anxious just thinking about it, and I completely passed out. The camera went straight up in the air while we were on the air! I GREW UP in Orlando, but I came to Gateway when Pastor David Smith asked me to join the staff. I had been working at Calvary Assembly of God in Florida,

I BELIEVE that technology will be at the forefront of the major changes that take place in the church. It’s hard for me to predict the next big technological advance that could benefit the church—even the secular world has a hard time keeping up with what’s next. But I do believe it’s our job to stay out there looking for it, whether it’s a hologram or an app. I LOVE GIVING people the opportunity to learn. We started the School of Tech Arts for other churches who want to learn how we operate. MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT MY JOB is being able to utilize what we do to lead people in Christ. We’re technically the mouthpiece of Pastor Robert, getting him to these other campuses and across the world. How many people have come to Christ because they were watching in Russia or somewhere else? You can’t just put a number on it, but it’s what excites me the most. I HOPE MY TOMBSTONE SAYS I gave everything I possibly could to Christ and that everything I did was for Him, whether in the secular or Christian market, it was always just to be a witness for Him.
