“IF YOU DON’T DO ANYTHING ELSE, TAKE SOME TIME OFF AND SPEND IT WITH FAMILY”

WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE each year, as summer comes around,

I look forward to our family vacation. For one week every summer, Debbie and I get together with all three of our kids, their spouses and children, and we take a trip somewhere. One year, we went to the mountains, and another year, we went to the beach. But one of my favorite memories gateway life gatewaylifemag.com David Smith, Thomas Miller, Senior Pastoral Oversight Lawrence Swicegood, Editor-in-Chief

came from a time we decided to save money by taking a staycation. During our staycation, all the kids came over to our house for the week. We went to the zoo one day and another day we went to the lake. One night, we decided to stay up late and play a card game. My son Josh got frustrated and said, “I’ve had a bad hand every time!” My son-inlaw, Ethan, was the dealer on the next hand and as he handed the deck to Josh, he said, “If you want, you can cut them.” All of a sudden, my son James started laughing. Now, sometimes James mishears what people say, but what he does hear is so strange. So I asked him, editorial Stacy Burnett, Managing Editor Daniel Hopkins, Senior Writer/Editor Shea Tellefsen, Staff Writer/Editor Zachary Richmond, Copy Editor project management Tracey Wilson

“Why are you laughing?” And he said, “Because Ethan just told Josh, ‘If you want, we can cuddle.’” We laughed and laughed and laughed. That’s the thing about when you’re together—funny things happen and memories are made for a lifetime. Gateway has some great, memory-making events this summer, several of which are for the whole family. The Gateway Student Conference, which is highlighted in this issue of Gateway Life, is just for your teenagers. We also have Amazing Kids’ Camp and Wacky Week tailored for your younger kids (5 years old–6th grade). And for your whole family, we have Family Vacation Camp, Single Parent Families Camp and weekly Equip classes, just to name a few. I want to encourage you to take advantage of the events the church has to offer, but also to do something with family this summer. That’s the most important thing. If you don’t do anything else, take some time off and spend it with family. The memories you’ll make will last a lifetime.

Tell Me Something Good “I’ve been looking for a church to call home for a while. I’ve visited churches, but until my friends, Michael and Nelson, encouraged me to attend Gateway Students on a Wednesday night, I never really felt like I belonged to a church. However, within the first three weeks of attending Gateway, my life was changed. I absolutely fell in love with this church. Since attending, I’ve been given the opportunity to grow in my relationship with Christ everyday, and ever since I’ve taken the time to get closer, I’ve been filled with a contentment in my life that I’ve never felt before— ever. God is so good!” >> Alexandra Hawes (AGE 16)

“Having been through countless management training courses, the id Seminar was the best experience I have ever had. I want to give you a timely, heartfelt thank you. You all did an incredible job. I often remind myself during the course of a day, in

the words of Pastor Brad Stahl, ‘Why not me?’” >> Don La Piana

“After a year of trying to have a baby, my wife and I started to worry that it might not ever happen, so we sought medical help. My wife found out there was a tumor in her cervix, and the doctor informed us that there was a slim chance of pregnancy and time was running out. We kept trying, but the negative results left us hopeless. One night, after being prayed for by Pastor James Lee at the altar after church, God spoke to me and told me to start praying about having a baby. Then, February 13 came. It was a terrible day for my wife and me. With all the sorrows of the day weighing heavy on my wife, she decided to take a pregnancy test— just to get the bad news out of the way. Except this time the news was good. Three pregnancy tests confirmed that my wife is pregnant, and a

sonogram shows that the baby has a healthy heart. Now, we are anxiously awaiting the birth or our baby!” >> Jason Merrell

“During the recent Men’s Summit, I felt like the Lord was reminding me about the beginning of my walk with Him. My salvation story includes going from a state of utterly hopeless alcoholism, homelessness and suicidal ideation to a full academic ride at Texas Christian University. He completely restored my family and now I’m earning my Master of Divinity from The King’s University. However, the most important aspect of my testimony is how God has continued to work in my spirit. It constantly reminds me of this truth: I can’t; He can; I choose to let Him, day by day.” >> Zachary Richmond

My second point was that many people view God as absent or distant. Before I even got to the scripture for the second lie, I noticed that a girl raised her hand, so I called on her. She said, ‘I can prove to you that the second point is not true.’ I said, ‘Okay, how?’ She already had her Bible opened up to Matthew 28:20 and said ‘God said He would be with us to the end.’ I stopped and told her it was awesome that she is using God’s Word to decide which things in life were true or not. It warmed my heart like nothing else to see our kids beginning to use the Word of God to guide their lives!” >> Rick Mauderer,

REVEALING MESSIANIC MYSTERIES 7 COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT GATEWAY’S JEWISH MINISTRY by Carina Smith

One of the most interesting aspects about Gateway is our desire to bring the gospel to the Jewish people. As a result, we have a thriving Messianic Jewish ministry that blends the Jewish tradition with the truth of the gospel. However, many members of Gateway are unfamiliar with our Jewish ministry. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions.

6  MAY | JUNE 2014

WHY DOES GATEWAY CARE SO MUCH ABOUT JEWISH PEOPLE?

WHAT IS A MESSIANIC SERVICE AND IS IT FOR JEWS OR CHRISTIANS? Led by Pastor Geoffrey Cohen, Gateway’s Messianic Service incorporates some of the main elements of a Jewish service, such as Shabbat (the Hebrew word for Sabbath) candles, blowing of the shofar (a ram’s horn that, in this case, signifies a call to worship), reading from the Torah and the Aaronic blessing sung in Hebrew. However, the focus is on Yeshua (the Hebrew pronunciation of Jesus’ name) and there are many elements common to a church service so Christians will feel at home as well. Those elements include worship, teaching and altar ministry. We hold our Messianic Service on the first Friday of the month at the nrh Campus. Whether you’re Jewish or not, you’ll be blessed by the richness that comes from studying the Jewish roots of our faith.

If you’re a Christian, every spiritual blessing you’ve received has come through the Jewish people—the prophets, the apostles, the Bible, even our Savior. Taking the gospel message back to the people through whom it came is one of the best ways to show our gratitude to God. It’s motivating to know that the salvation message was and still is for the Jews and, as Gentiles, we have the privilege of being grafted in to their salvation (Romans 11:17). In fact, in order for Gentiles to come to salvation, God actually blinded the Jewish people’s eyes to the truth that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah (Romans 11:25). Now that we believe in Jesus, we want to tell them the good news that He is the Jewish Messiah they have been seeking for thousands of years! The Bible promises worldwide revival once the Jewish people believe in Jesus: Romans 11:15, “For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?” And, the greatest promise of all, according to Matthew 23:37–39, Jesus will return after the Jewish people believe in Him.

WHY DOES GATEWAY GO “TO THE

DOES GOD LOVE THE JEWISH PEOPLE MORE THAN GENTILES? WHAT ABOUT THE PALESTINIANS? Although the Lord’s divine pattern is to go the Jewish people first, His plan is not to the Jew only. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son …” (John 3:16). He loves all nations and longs for us to partner with Him to reach every people group. Gateway Church supports effective Palestinian, Arab and international ministries to reach the world with the gospel. We desire for Jews, Arabs and all nations to be united in Jesus as “one new man” (Ephesians 2:15). We believe God’s heart is not for us to pick a “side,” but to ask Him for a supernatural ability to love all people extravagantly.

HOW CAN I SUPPORT THE JEWISH PEOPLE AND ISRAEL? Within Gateway’s Jewish Ministries, we work with 21 ministries. Most are in Israel, but we also support ministries reaching the Jewish people in South Africa, Argentina, Germany and the u.s. If you would like to support Jewish outreach through Gateway Church, we’ll be happy to send your donation to the Jewish ministries we support around the world.

JEW FIRST?

Pastor Robert teaches us that when we bring the tithe, or the first 10 percent of our income, to the Lord, God blesses our remaining 90 percent. In the same manner, according to Romans 1:16, when we go to the Jew first, He blesses the rest of our ministry and outreach. Gateway is intentional in reaching the Jewish people in our area, giving financially to Jewish ministries around the world and praying for Israel. We believe this is one of the main reasons God has blessed Gateway Church so much. You can apply this same principle in your life by giving offerings to a ministry reaching the Jewish people or starting your daily prayer time by praying “for the peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:6), which is praying for the salvation of Jews in Israel and around the world.

WHY DO WE WRITE GOD AND LORD WITHOUT THE Os IN THE MESSIANIC SERVICE? One of the Ten Commandments is to not take the Lord’s name in vain. Orthodox Jews take great measures in order to assure that they could not potentially break this commandment. For instance, they will not even write His name just in case the paper could end up on the dirty floor or in the trash. Instead, they would write his name as G-d or L-rd. Romans 14 instructs believers to be careful about doing things which may cause others to stumble. Observant Jews often attend the Messianic Service; so, to honor them and to convey that we revere God, Gateway Jewish Ministries chooses to write His name in this same manner at our events.

WHY DO WE LIGHT TWO CANDLES DURING THE MESSIANIC SERVICE? The Jewish tradition is for the woman of the house to light Shabbat candles while she prays. When she opens her eyes after the prayer, Sabbath begins and the family enters into a period of rest. This act signifies a breaking away from the rest of the work week and setting aside an entire day to simply spend time with God and family. We light two candles to symbolize that the Sabbath is holy, or as it literally translates, set aside, from the rest of the week.

SETTLING A 30-YEAR-OLD DEBT by Daniel Hopkins 1985 was a good year for David Jackson. The real estate investor had done so well that when Bill Clark, an acquaintance who owned a successful financial planning firm, approached him for a $30,000 loan for a real estate venture, David entered the deal with little trepidation—a move that would impact his life decades later. Things seemed to be going well at first. Bill used the money to purchase about 135 rental properties in South Dallas County for 50 cents on the dollar. His plan was to refurbish them and sell them to clients. Though many of them had sold, the Tax Reform Act of 1986 took effect and caused the housing market to crumble. The banks that held Bill’s titles went under and the fdic took them

over and called in all of his notes, which meant he would have to come up with nearly $1.2 million immediately. Unfortunately, he only had $400,000. The bank took it along with all the properties—including his own home— and Bill filed Chapter 11 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy. He had no way of paying back David’s loan and was no longer legally obligated to do so, though he promised he would. He didn’t even have enough money for a car. “I had to go to my dad and say, ‘Dad, can you cosign a note’—I was thirty-something years old,” says Bill, thinking back to one of his low points. Even lower was when his wife left him soon after. Here he was, completely broke and alone, but God was working on him.

“It was really about God’s grace,” he says. “I was telling everybody I was a great Christian, but my walk with God was pitiful.” Bill spent the next 20 years at Sojourn Church, where his walk with God began to flourish and he got back on his feet financially. He reopened his financial planning firm in 2003 and began attending Gateway’s Frisco Campus. By 2013, David Jackson was a vague memory until he heard God say, “I want you to pay back David his $30,000. To which he responded, “‘Great! David, who?’ I hadn’t seen him for 30 years and I couldn’t remember his name,” says Bill. However, tracking him down proved easier than he thought. David Jackson, who remains a commercial real estate broker, has long since recovered from the crash that lasted from 1986 to 1993. However, he’s not faring so well in the wake of 2008’s Great Recession. “God has had my family—my wife and I—on the ‘manna plan,’” he says. “In other words, He’s provided every single month, but just enough so that we were never late with a payment, but not enough to really start aggressively paying down debt.” Every month, they prayed for manna, and every month, God provided a miracle—many times when it looked impossible. David and his family were also attending Gateway’s Frisco Campus, but he had no idea he was often in the same room with Bill. In November of 2012, he decided to advertise his services in the Gateway Business Directory. When the directory came out, he saw a full-page ad for Bill’s financial planning firm. “There’s Bill!” he exclaimed, shocked at seeing him listed in the directory. David called him and the two booked a breakfast meeting.

David had forgiven the debt years ago, but was concerned about how this meeting would go. However, within five minutes of saying “hello,” Bill brought up the elephant in the room: “David, you wouldn’t believe what God’s been telling me to do. I owe you $30,000, and I want to give that back to you.” Bill pulled a check out of his pocket made out to David for $10,000. He promised to pay the rest as soon as possible—a promise he kept in the following months. The timing was perfect. God still had David and his wife on the “manna plan,” and the next month’s provision was Bill’s check. “Frankly, if it weren’t for Bill’s $30,000 payback, we would’ve had to borrow more money or we would’ve been deficient on our payments,” says David. “His wife told me that after our breakfast he was in tears just being able to complete that connection after 28 years. That shows an extraordinary amount of integrity.” More than that, it shows the beauty and complexity of God’s reconciliation. He can take money lost three decades ago and use it for today’s provision.

EVERY MONTH, THEY PRAYED FOR MANNA, AND EVERY MONTH, GOD PROVIDED A MIRACLE—MANY TIMES WHEN IT LOOKED IMPOSSIBLE. Today, both men serve together in Generous Life, Gateway’s Financial Stewardship Ministry. David and his wife, Debbie, serve as group leaders in Financial Peace University at Gateway Frisco. Bill is the class leader for Financial Peace University and is a Kingdom Advisor. GL GATEWAYPEOPLE.COM  9

Bringing it Home Kari Jobe Returns to Her Roots with Majestic

Over the course of two nights in November, 2013, Kari Jobe filled the Majestic Theatre in Dallas with a sound not commonly heard in that venue: worship. The two-night event was recorded and released as Kari’s third major-label album, Majestic. While the previous two albums explore her singer-songwriter side, there’s something very different about this one. Majestic is focused on seeking God’s presence in passionate worship, and its first single, “Forever,” written with Bethel’s Brian Johnson, paints a powerful picture of Christ’s death and resurrection.

14  MAY | JUNE 2014

How did you come to write “Forever”? Brian and I wanted to write about the cross and talk about the story of Jesus in fresh way—just taking our time writing it more poetically. It took about seven months to complete. At first I thought, This is taking forever—wait, that’s the name of the song (laughs). I’m glad we took our time with it because now it feels so strong. A lot of modern worship songs about the death and resurrection only mention it briefly. On the other hand, it seems like you guys spend almost the entire song painting a picture of that scene. Is that something you set out to do? We wanted to declare how the enemy has been defeated. And we wanted to remind people to live in victory over things in their lives that have already been defeated. Satan does not have any power unless we give it to him. We wanted to inspire people to get free in a new way. During the Free Indeed series, I kept thinking about “Forever” because it’s the power of the cross that frees us. This is a big season for people wanting more of the presence of God in their lives and wanting to break the power of darkness. I hope “Forever” is a helpful reminder of that. What’s it like writing with Brian Johnson? It’s great. He just started playing the guitar and we started worshipping, praying and interceding. The melody came very quickly after that. When he arrived that morning, he said, “I keep sensing

this theme ‘forever.’ Forever we’ll glorify Jesus for the price He paid for us. Forever we’ll sing praise to Him. So it’s not just here on earth that we worship, when we get to heaven, that will be the song of the redeemed.” It was pretty cool—much more prophetic than just a mechanical experience. That’s really reflected on the album. Absolutely! I’m excited because Majestic has so many songs for the Church. It’s more congregational than anything I’ve ever done. People at Gateway know me as a worship leader, but, for a few years, people outside Gateway have seen me as more of an artist. But, really, I’m a worship leader to my core. This album goes back

“This album goes back to my roots. My calling is to be a worship leader.” to my roots. My calling is to be a worship leader. The whole thing was recorded live. There is also a dvd that goes along with it. I feel like there’s a new sound in this album. It might not be something that everyone will say, “Oh, I never heard this before.” I think it’s actually just spiritual. There’s just a sound of desperation in it. There’s a hunger for more of the presence of God in my heart, in the songs.

Is that also why you chose to record Majestic live instead of in a studio? Yes, it’s so much better to capture raw worship and people’s heart cry. We recorded it over two nights at the Majestic Theatre in Dallas and they were some of the strongest nights of worship I’ve ever experienced. People came with such an expectancy to meet with God. The big moment of the night, honestly, was “Forever.” And it felt like people were getting the revelation that Satan has no power. The crowd was so loud on that song. You know worshipers are getting revelation when they just start yelling in the middle of the song. What was it like recording it in a secular venue versus in a church? It’s always been a dream of mine to do it at the Majestic Theatre because I just think it’s beautiful. It ended up being extremely prophetic. At the time I booked it, I didn’t know what the theme of the album was yet—I didn’t even have all my songs finished. I think it’s cool because it communicates to people that you can experience the presence of God outside the four walls of your church. We were worshiping outside of the building we call church, and God met with us! GL

18 WAYS YOU KNOW IT’S SUMMER AT GATEWAY by Daniel Hopkins There’s no getting around it, summer in Texas is like living in a frying pan. You can practically hear the sizzle coming from the bottom of your shoes when you walk outside. But at Gateway, we take the heat in stride. In fact, we embrace it. Here are 18 ways you know it’s summer at Gateway.

• You hope Pastor Robert preaches a long sermon so you can put off getting into your thousand-degree car. • After you get baptized, you get back in the line to go again.

• Attendance swells at the North Fort Worth and NRH Campuses, because smoothies are allowed in the Auditorium.

• You get a tan walking from your car to the church entrance.

• Texas Rangers jerseys are considered “Sunday best.”

• You still need a heavy coat just to sit in the Auditorium.

• People in swimwear at the nrh Campus are just swinging by on their way to or from nrh2o.

• You go to the altar to pray for your air conditioner. • When Pastor Robert asks if you want the Water of Life, you say yes, but for a different reason. • You’ve signed up for every Equip class available because the air conditioning in those classrooms is cold. Oh yeah, and you hope to learn something new. • You go to kairos to get free of the spirit of sweatiness. • You can cook your entire dinner on the dashboard of your car while you’re at the 5:45 pm Saturday service.

18  MAY | JUNE 2014

• You wonder when Gateway will open the Hurricane Harbor Campus.

• You stop asking yourself if someone will jump in the pond at the Southlake Campus and start asking yourself when. • You bookmark your Bible with a pair of sunglasses. • The Slurpee line at 7-Eleven wraps around the front of the North Fort Worth Campus. • You wonder when Gateway Worship will sing a Beach Boys song. • You have fond memories of last December’s terrible ice storm.

THE STORY behind MARK HARRIS’

“YOU STAND” by Daniel Hopkins

Mark Harris doesn’t usually do writing sessions with his students. Why? For starters, he’s a highly sought-after instructor. Every summer for the last seven years, Mark, an Artist in Residence at Gateway and former member of 4Him, has traveled to three different songwriting camps to teach kids how to be effective songwriters. However, last summer, at a camp in Columbus, Ohio, he made an exception to the rule, which resulted in his new song, “You Stand.” At this particular camp, the hallway outside of Mark’s classroom had a large, flat piece of glass mounted on the wall. Across the face of the glass, Isaiah 40:8 was etched: “The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever” (nkjv). Mark didn’t notice the artwork at first, but one of his students did. The exercise that day was simply to walk around and look for things that could inspire a song. Collin, a high school senior at the time, immediately gravitated toward the etched glass. “He told me he wanted to write a song called ‘God’s Word Stands Forever,’” says Mark. “During the lunch break, he came back in and said, ‘I think I have a chorus.’” Collin sang the chorus, and what he sang ended up being pretty close to the final version, but it still required some tweaking and editing from Mark. In fact, that’s what he enjoys most. “I will never like a song more than while I’m writing it, because I love the creative process,” he says. He takes great joy in crafting a well-balanced song. And on “You Stand,” the verses and bridge perfectly support the chorus, which simply repeats, “You stand forever.” The verse says, “God, You are / You will be / and You have always been,” and the bridge is more of a declaration: “You’re

everlasting, You’re never ending / Nothing and no on can compare to You.” “A song isn’t complete until there’s nothing left to take away,” Mark says of his intensive songwriting style. Now that there’s nothing left to take away from “You Stand,” Mark is ready to let it go. “Once it’s written, I release ownership of it in my mind,” he says, which means he’s okay with worship leaders reinterpreting and rearranging his version of the song. That’s a lesson he learned during his 17 years as a founding member and the primary songwriter of 4Him, a charttopping, award-winning contemporary Christian group that formed in the late ‘80s. Many of his songs, including “The Basics of Life” and “Future Generations,” gave Mark a lesson in letting go of his vision for the music and letting producers come in and do what they do best. Those songs went on to become some of the most popular songs Mark has ever written. Now, as a veteran songwriter, he’s ready to impart some of his knowledge and talent for songwriting to the next generation of worship leaders here at Gateway. However, in an unexpected twist, he’s discovered that he’s no longer just a teacher—he’s become a student as well. “I’ve learned a lot about serving under authority and submitting to that authority,” he says. “I’m learning new things everyday.” So is everyone around Mark. His optimism and love for songwriting are infectious. It’s safe to say that because of His influence, some of Gateway’s best music is yet to come—and, according to Mark, the expectation is mutual. heart and called me back to Him while I was high in a movie theater after turning my back on Him for most of my time high school. I have never been the same since that moment.

MIKE GUZZARDO

is the Executive Pastor of Gateway Students and has been on staff since May 2011. He and his wife, Alicia, have two daughters, Bella and Mia.

What did you do before Gateway? About eight years before I came on staff at Gateway, I started a ministry where I traveled and spoke full-time at different conferences, churches and camps. Did you always know you wanted to be involved in student ministry? No, not at all. But, God just kept opening doors in youth ministry. I have an equal passion for all the different age groups in church. I love speaking to adults as much as I love speaking to kids and college students. But the majority of doors God opens continues to be with the younger generation. What do you like to do for fun? I love watching football but I really love playing basketball. It all started in my junior year of high school when this guy beat my friend and me in a two-onone game. I said, “That’s it, I’m going to learn how to play this game if it kills me.” When I got to college and tried out for the team, I made it.

Did you ever have any professional aspirations? I wish, but six-feet tall is a little short for the nba.

Who’s the most influential person in your life? You know, I have to say my wife. I feel like she knows me so well and we talk through so many things that her feedback steers me the most. What does a night out on the town look like for you guys? It’d be going out to dinner.

So who wins in a one-on-on game between you and Dirk Nowitzki? Dirk would have a slight edge in that game (laughs).

Largest animal you can kill with your bare hands? You know, I'm going to go with an ant eater. I think I can take one of those.

What’s your favorite thing about what you do? Research says 77 percent of people who make a decision for Christ in their lifetime will do so before age 20. So, when I see a light go on in a student and they really get it, I realize that’s probably going to be a lifealtering moment for them that will bear fruit for a long time.

What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever done? I rafted down the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. It was actually one of the worse decisions I’ve ever seen people make on a mission trip. We had about six rafts full of kids and all of them tipped over. Everyone made it out but I was thinking, This is not smart.

What were you like as a teenager? I was a total partier. In my teenage years, I never missed a day getting high until I graduated. I had a lot of brokenness. When did you decide to follow God? When He clearly spoke to my

If you could learn one random skill, what would you learn? Wilderness survival. Where do you see yourself in five years? I see myself strongly plugged in and serving in the local body of believers, but also continuing to have a role in influencing the body of Christ as a whole.
