WELCOME

WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY IS THANKSGIVING

and it’s all because of my family. Some of my favorite moments are when we’re all sitting around the table talking and telling funny stories. The biggest part of Thanksgiving for most people is the meal. It’s funny how meals work; they’re not just about eating—they’re an excuse to get together. My family will finish the meal, yet we stay at the table for hours.

gateway life gatewaylifemag.com David Smith, Thomas Miller, Senior Pastoral Oversight Lawrence Swicegood, Editor-in-Chief project management Tracey Schwellinger

We have five children and three grandbabies, which means our house turns into a loud environment around the holidays. It’s nutsville! There’s cooking, cleaning, board games, and ball games. Having everyone together is what makes it the most prized season of the year for us. One of my favorite things to do, and it’s something I want to encourage you to do, is go around the room and talk about all the things we’re most thankful for from the past year. Gratitude turns our minds and hearts to what’s really important: the relationships God’s given us, including our families, but even more importantly what God has done for us.

There was a miracle that took place when we met Jesus—instantaneously! We as Christians should live a life of gratitude, and Thanksgiving is a great time to refocus our minds on what truly matters. I’m thrilled about this issue of Gateway Life because there are several articles that reflect on what God has done in people’s lives. There’s a story about a widow who miraculously got out of debt (page 14); there’s a story of a young man who turned from a life of dealing drugs to a life of serving God here at Gateway (page 8); and there’s a great article on gratitude by Pastor Robert (page 13). I’m especially excited about the “Operation Christmas Child” story (page 6), which shows how easy and impactful it is to give Christmas gifts to children in need all around the world. As we enter this holiday season, I want to encourage you to set aside time with your family to reflect on all the good things God has done for you this year. Blessings,

FAVORITE MUSIC? I am a worship guy, and I lean toward Matt Redman’s music. This year I got to worship in London at the Alpha Conference with Matt Redman and Tim Hughes leading on the platform. It was awesome! MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT? When my family first came to Texas and moved into our first house, I rolled the refrigerator over the front threshold on a dolly and slipped. The refrigerator pinned me flat on the floor. My family will never let me live that one down. PROUDEST MOMENT? Each time I watch one of my children on their wedding day (four so far … and yes, I cry like a baby). WHAT IS SOMETHING NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT YOU? I was a hippy at Berkeley in the ’70s. In 1978, during the Jesus Movement, I hitchhiked from California to Kentucky. IF YOU COULD GET COFFEE WITH ANYONE LIVING OR DEAD, WHO WOULD IT BE? I would pick up the tab for Saint Augustine, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Martin Luther at Starbucks, and I’d talk to them about strategy for the evangelization of Europe. Tell Me Something Good “I am a homeschool mom with four young children. Several months after moving and attending the Frisco Campus, I was looking for ways to get connected with a Pink Group, but wasn’t able to because of my husband’s schedule. That’s when I heard about mentoring. It turned out to be exactly what I needed in this season. My mentor and I met and worked through two different studies during our time together. I feel I have grown so much and experienced freedom by overcoming fear and renewing my mind. I think the most impactful part of mentoring for me was just being able to learn from the way my mentor interacted with me. She was transparent and shared her heart. She encouraged me and challenged me to go deep with God and in my relationships with others.” >> Lesli Kohler

“I left for church on a recent Sunday morning knowing I didn’t have enough gas in my car to get there and back home again. I planned to ask one of the pastors how to get gas to go home because I was determined to be in God’s presence and wasn’t going to let the lack of gas stop me. Well, I forgot to ask, and as I was using my walker to get to my car after the service, this lovely lady and her

two young daughters stopped me and offered to help me to my car. As they helped get my walker into the car I told them I didn’t have enough gas to get home. Right away, one of the daughters blessed me with three crisp $5 bills. I’m still speechless about how good God is and how He puts the right people in our lives at the right times! I praise God for them and will never forget their kindness toward me.” >> Dee Johnson

“I met Kimmie Ethridge in Guest Central, though she’s been at Gateway for a while. She’s a principal at Kay Granger Elementary in Fort Worth. This past year, she was selected from among the 5,000 principals in Texas as Principal of the Year. She is open and vocal about her faith on her campus and with her students and their parents. The state has awarded her school with an ‘A+ Exemplary’ rating the entire time she’s been there. When she received the award, she thanked God and spoke of her faith and received a standing ovation. This shows me that there’s hope and there are believers out there taking a stand!”

Thank you, Gateway!” “I had no real knowledge of what a living trust was as I only knew about wills. This is such an invaluable program and I thank you for offering it!” “Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to learn how to be a better steward of what God has placed in my care and blessed me with.” “We’ve been sharing the information we learned with our friends and family. We’re very grateful for the service Gateway has provided to us!” “I can't believe the service is free! This is a great help to people who may otherwise spend money unnecessarily. Thanks!” “The quality of material, along with an interesting presentation, made the time invested worthwhile. Thank you for this valuable service.” >> Pastor James Morris

COMING HOME Zach Faught turned his back on church, but God never turned His back on him. by SHEA TELLEFSEN

50 years in prison. Zach Faught, a 21-year-old who had spent his life in church, couldn’t believe what the judge just said. A few weeks earlier, he’d been caught dealing drugs and now was about to face the consequences: 50 years in prison. “I lost it. I was just thinking, ‘I’m never going to have a wife. I’m never going to have kids. I’m going to miss out on a whole 10 chapters of life,’” Zach says. This was never how he expected his life to turn out.

8  NOVEMBER 2014

Zach grew up in church as a pastor’s kid with four sisters. His whole family was involved in ministry, and they traveled around the world doing prophetic worship conferences. He was always around church because his family was consumed by its everyday details—services, weddings, hospital visits, and high school graduations. But it had an ugly side too, one where people gossiped and tore each other down. For Zach, that took a toll. “I knew who God was, but I didn’t have a firm foundation,” he says. One Wednesday night during a youth service where Zach was a leader, a guy came in and struck up a conversation. They clicked, and he invited Zach to hang out with him and his friends. “He’s the one who actually introduced me to selling drugs and to that lifestyle,” Zach says. Over the next nine months, he abandoned his Christian upbringing for alcohol and drugs. He became close with bigger people in the business and started selling a lot more drugs. “I was trying to place my identity in something that was a temporary fix,” he says. Everything changed when one of his friends was caught selling drugs, and to help his own case, he turned Zach in to the police. “That was a defining moment for me,” Zach says. One thing Zach says is that although he turned his back on church, God never turned His back on him. And that was never more evident than when he was facing his 50-year prison sentence. His lawyer was able to get the sentence down to 10 years, and he only served about two years—one year and 11 months to be exact—before he was released on parole for good behavior. When Zach finished his sentence, he knew his life had taken a bad turn, yet he still slipped back into some of his old habits. It wasn’t until he reached his lowest point, feeling depressed and betrayed, that he realized he had to get right with God. Recommitting his life to the Lord changed everything, but going back to church took a little time. It was difficult for him to return, knowing he might be judged for his mistakes. In early 2013, Zach heard that Shady Grove, the church he attended when he was a teenager, was merging with Gateway to become the Grand Prairie Campus, so he decided to visit. At first he started going to the Southlake Campus because he wasn’t sure he wanted to face his old friends. “I didn’t think they would accept me back after what I’d done and what I had been through,” Zach says. At the gym one day, he ran into Josh Briscoe, a pastor at the Grand Prairie Campus, who also happened to be his youth pastor at Shady Grove. Josh invited Zach to come to a worship night at the Southlake Campus with some other Grand Prairie people. “That just sparked it all,”

Zach says. He ended up going back to the Grand Prairie Campus and started attending. But it took some time for Zach to really become part of the Grand Prairie family. “When I came back, the enemy was feeding me lies, saying ‘You’ll never be accepted. You’ll never be welcomed back. You’ll never be able to serve in this kind of church, in this kind of atmosphere,’” Zach says. He was able to get past those lies by getting connected with a few mentors who helped him along the way. By being honest with them about his struggles, he saw that submitting to their authority was the key to changing. “It’s those times we think we can do it alone that we are most vulnerable,” Zach says. “When you get someone to actually speak life into you versus being in the world where someone’s constantly dragging you down, that’s where the biggest change is.”

“Just because you messed up doesn’t mean God is disqualifying you. He wants you. If you mess up, get back up.” Now Zach, 29, can’t imagine not being part of the Grand Prairie family. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to show up at the campus and not see him. He serves as a leader with Gateway Students, helps people at the Welcome Center on the weekends, serves with Altar Ministry, and attends practically every event. But his heart truly lies with Seven (Young Adults). He’s an unofficial intern, showing up at 9:00 am on Tuesdays to help at the office in any way he can and not leaving until the last person has been prayed for and the Auditorium is cleaned up. Zach’s heart is to help build an honest community at Grand Prairie’s Seven, where people who are struggling can find a place. He wants other people to be able to experience the life change and authentic friendships he has. “That’s the thing that’s changed me the most … being able to say, ‘This is what I’m struggling with. This is what my issues are. I can’t—and I don’t want to—do this alone.’ ” And as far as being accepted for who you are, Zach says, “I know for a fact that God wants us no matter what. Just because you messed up doesn’t mean God is disqualifying you. He wants you. If you mess up, get back up.” GL

m o r F our use o H to s r u o Y by SYDNIE SHREFFLER

One of the best things about the holidays is the opportunity to eat a dish you may only have once a year. The hunger for favorites like Grandma’s stuffing and Aunt Ethel’s cranberry salad builds all year until finally, fall arrives with the green light to fill up on the most delicious smorgasbords. Curious and hungry (craving sweet potato casserole), we asked some of our pastors about their holiday favorites.

JULIETTE’S HOMEMADE MAC N’ CHEESE

CHICKEN DUMPLINGS

Pastor Robert Morris “Debbie’s family always serves dumplings at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and that is the holiday dish that I look forward to the most!”

CREAMY, CHEESY CORN CASSEROLE

Pastor Tom Lane “Recently, my wife Jan found a new recipe for a corn casserole that the whole family has fallen in love with. We know it will be a new tradition come the holidays!”

STRAWBERRY SURPRISE

Pastor Thomas Miller “This dish is all that is sweet, salty, and rich. Oh, and it’s filled with fruit!”

GRANNY’S CHICKEN DRESSING

Pastor Debbie Morris “Every year, my mom makes an old family recipe weeks in advance for dressing from scratch. For as long as I can remember, it’s been a part of the holidays for us. We eat so much of it; we can only eat it at Thanksgiving and Christmas!”

Pastor Tim Ross “My wife Juliette’s mac and cheese signals the start of the holiday season to me. When she comes home from the grocery store with five different packs of shredded cheese, I know the season has changed. It’s ooey, gooey, most likely unhealthy, and oh so delicious!”

PINEAPPLE CASSEROLE

Pastor Kari Jobe “Growing up, and still to this day, my favorite dish at Thanksgiving is Pineapple Casserole. It’s also the dish I always make for our family gatherings. My mom is the best cook I know, and I never want to try and outshine her, so I stick to what I know!”

JULIETTE’S HOMEMADE MAC N’ CHEESE 1 teaspoon olive oil (for boiling pasta, optional) 1 box Barrilla® Elbows 3 eggs ¾ cup milk ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon McCormick® Garlic Pepper Seasoning

6-8 cups shredded cheese (4 cups sharp cheddar and 2 to 4 cups mixed cheese [Monterey, Mexican blend, taco, Colby, etc.]) Additional salt and garlic pepper to season layers

STRAWBERRY SURPRISE FILLING

1 egg, slightly beaten

2 sticks butter

2 cups crushed pretzels (not finely crushed)

1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened

⅔ cup warm chicken broth

Salt and pepper to taste

Flour

¾ cup butter, melted

1 cup sugar

6–8 cans (14 oz each) chicken broth

3 tablespoons sugar

1 container (9 oz) Cool Whip®, thawed

CRUST

1 package (6 oz) strawberry gelatin 2 cups boiling water 1 package (10 oz) frozen, sliced strawberries

Preheat oven to 375°F. Boil pasta according to the instructions on the box. In a medium bowl, mix the cheeses together by hand. To prepare the egg wash, in a second bowl, mix the eggs, milk, salt, and garlic pepper together well.

Mix pretzels, melted butter, and 3 tablespoons of sugar together and spread in a 9x13-inch pan. Bake 8 to 10 minutes at 400°F. Let cool.

When the noodles are done, drain them. Pour a layer (about one inch) into a 9.5x12-inch baking dish. Bathe the noodles in the egg wash. (Use a ladle, the noodles are hot.) Add a generous layer of cheese over the noodles. Sprinkle a little salt and garlic pepper over it. Repeat the layers until the noodles are gone. If you run out of cheese, add more to cover the top layer. Add a sprinkle of salt and garlic pepper to the top. Cover and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the cover and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until it’s a beautiful golden brown.

Blend cream cheese, 1 cup of sugar, and Cool Whip® together and spread over pretzel mixture.

PINEAPPLE CASSEROLE 2 cans (20 oz each) pineapple chunks, in juice ½ cup sugar 3 tablespoons allpurpose flour

1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded 1 roll Ritz® Crackers, crushed ½ cup butter, melted

Drain pineapple, reserving 3 tablespoons of juice. Combine pineapple juice, sugar, and flour in a mixing bowl. Add cheese and pineapple and mix well. Place in a greased 8x8-inch baking dish. Combine crushed crackers and melted butter and sprinkle over pineapple mixture. Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes or until browned.

CHICKEN DUMPLINGS

Combine gelatin, boiling water, and strawberries. Allow mixture to chill (in refrigerator) for at least 10 minutes, until slightly thickened. Spread over cream cheese mixture. Chill dish until set, about 1 to 2 hours. (No sneaks!)

GRANNY’S CHICKEN DRESSING 2 packages (6 oz each) Morrison’s Corn-Kits® Corn Bread Mix (Cook according to directions) 4–6 medium-size cooked biscuits or 6 slices of white bread, lightly toasted

2 cups finely chopped onions to taste 2 cups finely chopped celery to taste 1 cup or 1–2 small bunches finely chopped green onions to taste 3 tablespoons poultry seasoning to taste

1 can (10¾ oz) cream of chicken soup

2 sticks melted butter

8–10 large eggs, slightly beaten

Salt and pepper to taste

Warm chicken broth (approx. 1–2 14 oz cans) Crumble corn bread and biscuits to a fine texture and combine in a large bowl. Mix in cream of chicken soup and eggs. To maintain a good consistency, add small amounts of chicken broth during mixing. Sauté chopped onions and celery in butter until tender, and fold into mixture. Add chopped green onions, poultry seasoning, butter, salt, and pepper. Pour mixture into a 9x13-inch greased baking dish and chill overnight, allowing time for it to season fully, or cook immediately. Bake at 350°F until golden brown and firm in the center.

Mix beaten egg and warm broth together. Gradually add flour to egg and broth mixture until stiff. Cover and chill for at least 30 minutes; this makes the dough easier to roll out. Divide the dough into two or three parts and roll thin on a floured surface. Cut into narrow strips, about a ½-inch to 1-inch wide. Layer strips on a cookie sheet with plastic wrap or foil between each layer. When finished, cover tightly with plastic wrap and place in the freezer until dough is frozen. In a large pot, bring four cans of broth to a rapid boil. Break frozen strips of dough into small pieces and add to broth. Be sure to keep broth at a steady boil. Stir often to keep dumplings from sticking together. After adding all of the dough to broth, allow the dumplings to simmer over low to medium heat until tender (about 45 minutes).* Add butter, salt, and pepper to taste. *Be sure to keep an extra pot of broth boiling to add to the main pot as it reduces.

CREAMY, CHEESY CORN CASSEROLE 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, cubed, at room temperature 4 tablespoons butter ⅓ cup milk ½ teaspoon salt

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste Diced jalapeños, to taste (optional) 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

4 cups (18 oz) frozen sweet corn, thawed Preheat oven to 350°F. In a medium saucepan, melt cream cheese and butter over low heat. Stir in milk until smooth and creamy. Stir in salt and corn, season with black pepper and jalapeños (if you wish). Pour mixture into an 8x8-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with shredded cheese. Bake for 20 minutes or until golden and bubbly.

AT T I T U D E O F

by ROBERT MORRIS

YEARS AGO, DEBBIE AND I HAD A COUPLE OVER FOR DINNER. It

was during a time that God was blessing us with vehicles and directing us to give them away. We did this nine times during an 18-month period, and each time we would give one away, God would bless us with a new one. We had this couple over for dinner because we were going to give them a car. After dinner, we went out to the driveway and said, “We’ve been praying, and we’d like to give you this car.” The wife was ecstatic, and after a while she and Debbie went back inside while the husband and I stayed out by the car. He started commenting on the other car in the driveway, saying, “Boy! That’s a nice car.” You’re not going to believe what he said next. He said, “Do you think you’re ever going to give that car away?” I thought, Not to you! It’s clear that the husband in this story was not grateful. In fact, I think the opposite of gratitude is greed. I’ve noticed when you give something to someone, they’re either grateful or they want more. Both gratitude and greed have different attitudes behind them. Gratitude looks to God to meet its needs while greed looks to people. There’s something very dangerous about the attitude behind greed, because God never provides supernaturally for us if we look to people as our source—He only provides supernaturally when we look to Him. There are two spirits that cause the attitude of greed: pride and poverty. Pride tries to get you to think more about your stuff than you should. Poverty tries to get you to feel guilty for your stuff. They’re both wrong because they put your focus on stuff. How we think about stuff determines whether we have a heart of gratitude or not. In fact, there are three ways we view stuff that affect whether or not we have an attitude of gratitude.

STUFF IS JUST STUFF God has no problem if you have stuff, but He does have a problem if your stuff has you. Look at Luke 12:13–15 as an example: “Then one from the crowd said to Him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.’ But He said to him, ‘Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?’ And He said to them, ‘Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.’” The last statement Jesus says here is a great one to memorize.

Taken from “The Attitude of Gratitude” sermon on November 26, 2011.

STUFF IS JUST A TEST Stuff is just a test on where we’re going to look for our provision. God will actually give you stuff sometimes to see how you respond. What are you going to do with your stuff? And did you know God is not only concerned with how you think about your stuff? He’s concerned about how you think about other people’s stuff. Deuteronomy 5:21 says, “‘You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife; and you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’” A desire for stuff really bothers God because it means something other than Him has your heart.

GRATITUDE IS PASSING THE STUFF TEST God uses this test to give us hearts of gratitude. We read in Deuteronomy 8 that God took the children of Israel through the wilderness for 40 years to “humble” and “test” them. Then in verses 11–18, God tells them that when they reach the Promised Land and they have great wealth, they should not forget when they wandered through the desert. The key to walking in gratitude is remembering where we were before God rescued us. A few years ago, we had a special offering at Gateway. Debbie and I gave a large amount and the next day the spirits of pride and poverty began to attack me. Pride said, “Boy, you gave a lot of money!” Then, poverty said, “Well, I wouldn’t want anyone to know how much I gave because they might think I have too much.” Right then, the Lord reminded me of something I used to say when I traveled and spoke at crusades and revivals. I’d always start my message by saying, “How many of you would rather be here than in jail?” I immediately thought back to how bad my past was and it shifted my focus from the amount of money we gave to how miraculously God saved me. I thought, Thank You, God, that I was able to give that much money. Thank You because it all came from You. When we’re being attacked by pride and poverty, and we’re taking on an attitude of greed, the Bible says to remember how God rescued us. An attitude of gratitude is that simple, and that’s what Thanksgiving is all about. GL

NEVER TOO L. FARR

LATE by KATIE SMITH

14  NOVEMBER 2014

had been trapped in a tough financial cycle all her life. She and her husband were able to make ends meet until he passed away, leaving her with a few debts. She paid them off, but even then she was barely able to keep her head above water. “All my life, I’ve struggled with finances,” she says. “It was like I just kept walking around in the wilderness.” When Loretta came to Gateway almost nine years ago, she was excited to hear about Generous Life (Gateway’s Financial Stewardship Ministry). She attended a few of their classes, but was still having trouble. “I tried to make a budget, but because I could never make the out balance meet the in balance, I would get defeated in about two or three months and then quit.” LORETTA FARR, A WIDOW IN HER 80s,

“IT WAS TIME TO COMPLETELY TRUST IN HIM.” She stayed afloat for a long time, and often, when she happened upon tough times, God provided her with just the amount she needed, but she always ended up back in the debt cycle. She didn’t have much in savings, and hospital bills from an unexpected heart surgery years before stacked high. She always knew God would take care of her, but she also felt she needed to keep up her end of the bargain. “I would run and get another job or do typing at home or something—I never really depended on God,” she says. “I thought I was making an excuse if I said, ‘God, I depend on You to fix this,’ instead of going out and getting a job.” About a year ago, Loretta, desperate for some income, tried to take on a small job, but she was having trouble completing the work. Then she thought she’d rent out a room in her house again. But that didn’t work either. She was stuck in a desperate place, unable to change things on her own. That’s when she had a revelation. “I realized God had taken away from me the opportunity to go out and fix it myself,” she says. “It was time to completely trust in Him.” Loretta started praying. With four sons, many grandchildren and no savings, she was concerned about what her children would inherit when she was gone. Would they be in debt? Or could they receive a different legacy? She contacted a friend who suggested she speak directly to someone in Generous Life. So she set up a meeting with Pastor James Morris, who helped her go over every aspect of her finances. The budget was tighter than she thought—there wasn’t even enough money left for food.

This put Loretta on the verge of feeling defeated again, but Pastor James helped her consolidate some of her bills, easing the strain. Though the budget was still tight, she stuck to it, determined to make things right and trust in God. She spent years trying to fix her financial situation on her own, living under a lot of self-condemnation. She didn’t know that God was just waiting for her to give Him room to work a miracle in her life. Loretta and Pastor James met four or five times to work through her budget. She knew the Lord was teaching her how to be a better steward and fully trust in Him. Then one day, a miracle happened. She felt led to call the company who gave her a reverse mortgage a few years back. She was met with incredible news. With the market in her favor, her house was recently valued higher, and there were thousands of dollars available to her. After a series of phone calls and counsel on whether drawing that money now was the right choice, Loretta received a large check. “It was all God,” she says. “He just stepped in and took over—I can’t even begin to tell you how it built my faith!”

NEVER TOO

L. FARR

Loretta Farr was trapped in a cycle of debt, but when she began to trust in God, she broke the cycle and changed her legacy.

LAT

With Pastor James’ help, Loretta was able to direct the money to the appropriate places. She paid off loans, put money away for her children, and set up an emergency fund and savings account for herself. For the first time in her life, she is living without fear of her financial situation. God has set her on a path of financial freedom, and she is determined to continue being a wise and faithful steward. “I wish I had known all this when I was a kid,” she says. “But it’s never too late!” GL

METHOD OF KNOWING if a song he’s written is any good. He plays it for his wife Alena. “She’s a good filter,” he says. “If she likes it, then I know it’s good. She really challenges me and it’s made me a much better writer.” Such was the case with “The Waters,” which he wrote in 2011 during one of his most prolific seasons of songwriting. His goal was to write one song a week, and something about this one made it stand out among the rest. David was inspired to write the song after hearing Preston Morrison’s “Buried Alive” message, in which he talked about the importance of baptism in a believer’s life. “I’ve never really heard a song about the doctrine of baptism,” says David. “So, I looked up the scripture in Colossians 2:12,” which says, “For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with Him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.” The lyrics of the song center around this passage in Scripture—“In the waters I am buried but alive / Your Spirit comes down, and builds my faith to live my life / I’m found in Your salvation.” But they also go beyond reinforcing what Scripture says. The imagery in the lyrics, “I’ve arrived at the waters where my sins are washed away,” and music work together to create the feeling of an old-time folk song, painting a sepia-toned picture in the listener’s mind of walking down to a serene lake to be baptized. As the song goes on, the production builds from a flickering acoustic guitar to soaring instrumental sections, which David and his team often fill with spontaneous exhortations and declarations. The first time the song was played in a weekend service was, fittingly, during a baptism service. It gave the song even more authority and weight, and in the end, it helped people gain a new understanding of everything that happens during a baptism. For David, nothing about songwriting is more important than that. “I want my songs to tell the truth about God and help people know Him better.” “The Waters” does exactly that, giving a revelation of what it means to be buried in Christ and raised with Him. “The Waters” is on Gateway Generate’s Gateway Generate EP, which can be purchased at Passages (Gateway Bookstore).

PROFILE

we would move here because of my husband’s job. We’ve been at Gateway ever since. SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES STARTED about 10 years ago. I was working in Gateway’s class for three-year-olds, and I noticed the single moms when they dropped off their kids. I went to former Gateway Pastor Brady Boyd and said, “Hey, Brady, you need to do something for these single moms.” A week later, he called and said, “Okay, you do it.” AROUND THAT TIME, one of my friends from high school was a student at UNT and had just gone through a divorce. She found herself homeless with two kids, so she came to live with us for a while. One night, her baby cried all night long. I went downstairs to check on her, and she was bawling and her baby was bawling. She had a huge test the next day. My heart broke for her at that moment, knowing that she was trying to break the cycle of poverty by going to school. It made me decide to do something about it. Now, Gateway uses a grant program to come alongside single parents in this situation to help pay for their living expenses while they earn a degree. Every single one of them has broken the cycle of poverty in their life!

SAMANTHA GOLDEN IS THE PASTOR OF GATEWAY’S SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES MINISTRY AND HAS BEEN ON STAFF AT GATEWAY SINCE FEBRUARY 2004.

I OVERSEE Gateway’s Single Parent Families Ministry. I love getting to watch God bring healing and restoration to the families. When you go through a divorce, it’s like the death of a dream. No one ever grows up thinking that they’re going to get divorced. It’s just been such a privilege to get to walk alongside people as they learn to dream again. I think I have the best job in the whole church.

MY HUSBAND BILLY AND I have four daughters and two grandsons. My husband says that getting grandsons was his gift for living in the estrogen ocean. He’s very happy to have grandsons. BILLY AND I GOT MARRIED in high school. We weren’t saved. In fact, I couldn’t stand Christians back then. I had to grow up fast because we had our first daughter when we were very young, and my husband was still experimenting with drugs. When I found myself pregnant again, I knew that if God was real, I needed to find Him because I was going to be a single mom with two kids if our lives didn’t change. We went to Trinity Fellowship. I remember sitting there and Pastor Jimmy Evans said, “Most people haven’t given up on God. They’ve just given up on Christians.” I remember thinking “Oh my gosh, that’s exactly how I feel!” I gave my life to the Lord, and I’ve never turned back. WE WERE STILL AT TRINITY in Amarillo when Pastor Jimmy announced that he was planting Pastor Robert and Gateway. I had no idea that exactly a year later

I GREW UP IN AMARILLO. My mother had six kids in six years, and I was the oldest. When I was in high school, my parents separated. I remember the loneliness my mom felt. Imagine being a single mom with six kids. I think that’s why seeing my friend that night and seeing the single moms drop off their kids in the church nursery impacted me so much. I was praying that God would break my heart for what breaks His. GROWING UP WAS CRAZY. I loved adventure and taking risks. In seventh grade, I took one of my friend’s parents’ cars out for a joyride. We were going so fast that when we went down a hill, the car would lift up. I thank God that we didn’t get in a wreck, and secondly that we didn’t get caught! I LOVE TO PLAY PRANKS ON MY KIDS. One year when my daughter was in third grade, we had my mom pick her up from school dressed in short shorts, high boots, and a boa around her neck. She was horrified and didn’t want anyone to know that was her grandmother. I love to do fun stuff like that.
