WELCOME
WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE OCTOBER IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE TIMES
of the year. While we don’t see the tremendous changes in color that a lot of states do, we still feel the changes in the air. And there are some big changes taking place at Gateway. We just completed our master plan for the Grand Prairie Campus. (Read more about that on page 8.) This is special to my heart because the Grand Prairie Campus is formerly gateway life gatewaylifemag.com David Smith, Thomas Miller, Senior Pastoral Oversight Lawrence Swicegood, Editor-in-Chief project management Tracey Schwellinger
Shady Grove Church where I was a member and associate pastor for 16 years before planting Gateway. In fact, former Shady Grove Pastors Olen and Sybel Griffing are like my mom and dad in the spirit. I am so excited to see how the Grand Prairie Campus is growing and about all the changes we’re making there, including the addition of a new kids’ wing, an updated Auditorium, and a larger parking lot. Our desire is to make it look and feel like our other campuses. I want to say thank you to you, the Gateway family, for your generous Heart for the Kingdom giving. It’s what allows us to continue to grow the kingdom by adding and improving campuses. editorial Stacy Burnett, Managing Editor Daniel Hopkins, Senior Writer/Editor Shea Tellefsen, Staff Writer/Editor Katie Smith, Staff Writer Georgette Shuler, Copy Editor photography Cory Hale
We have so many events and activities going on, but this month has one of my favorite nights of the year: Fall Festival (page 10). I like walking around and seeing families together and everybody having fun. I especially enjoy seeing all the costumes. Last year I even saw some Pastor Robert costumes! (I’m not asking for any more of those, but I thought they were cute!) I just love getting to meet everyone. It’s a great night for families, Gateway Groups, and friends to get together and have fun. I am also excited about this issue of Gateway Life. You’ll love reading Austin Wall’s incredible testimony of how God miraculously healed his body and his marriage (page 12) as well as the incredible miracles taking place in Gateway’s healing rooms (page 14). There are amazing things happening at all of our campuses, and I want to encourage you to see what’s going on at your campus and find one of the many opportunities to get involved (page 16). I sincerely hope you enjoy this issue of Gateway Life and that you and your family find ways to enjoy the fall season together. Blessings,

CORRECTIONS: SEPTEMBER ISSUE “UNDER COVER”
The article about the new Gateway elders misstated the number of elders on the board. There are 12 elders on the board, not 16. There are four apostolic elders who are called in periodically to help with large decisions and
vision casting, but they are not part of the board and do not attend monthly elder meetings. In addition, Tra Willbanks was misquoted as saying, “All three of our boys have been saved while attending Gateway.” This quote should be attributed to Nelson Mitchell. Tra Willbanks and his wife have six daughters and one son.

FAVORITE MUSIC? I’m on a Rend Collective kick right now. But I adamantly love country music. WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP? A writer. I was going to write a book called Calm Down America. The cover was going to be a still shot of me making a motion with my hands and saying “calm down.” IF YOU COULD HAVE COFFEE WITH ANYONE IN HISTORY, WHO WOULD IT BE? Should I say Jesus? I’d really like to have coffee with President John F. Kennedy. I could read about his life all day. WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST PET PEEVE? People asking me about my dating life. For some reason people think I won’t say anything if I’m dating someone. Let me go on record saying that if there’s something to report—I’ll tell you. I promise. WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD? The tip jar at the self-serve yogurt store. I don’t think they understand what self-serve means. It always makes me giggle.
OUR VISION is to see people saved, healed, set free, discipled, equipped, empowered, and serving.

Tell Me Something Good “This fall, Gateway made a massive local impact on the communities surrounding each of our church campuses. Everyone knows that in order for students to start the school year properly, they need school supplies. School supplies are not optional, they are a necessity. Each Gateway campus partnered with a school in their area, and not only provided volunteer mentors but also gave school supplies and backpacks to students who desperately needed them. In fact, 2,727 students were set for school because of you and your faithful giving. Thank you, Gateway Church, for all you do around the world and right here at home!” >> Kam Hunt, Associate Pastor, Local & National Outreach
“Recently, I was watching the Free Indeed series on The Blessed Life. About a month before the last episode aired, I received some very painful news and was very hurt and sad. A spirit of heaviness was on me and I felt myself slipping into a deep depression. When Pastor Robert led a prayer of deliverance, I participated and immediately felt the burden being lifted. I truly felt so much better. The pain wasn’t gone, but that heaviness lifted and that was a great breakthrough for
me. Within the next few days, I visited gatewaypeople.com and learned about Freedom Ministries. I immediately started attending Foundations of Freedom classes and have been very blessed by them. I’m so excited to attend KAIROS soon. I am on the road to recovery and to fully living in freedom! I cannot express how truly grateful I am for your ministry. God is doing awesome work at Gateway!” >> Timiko Covington
“My oldest daughter, age 23, was in a serious car accident last March. She broke her sternum, collapsed her leg, and broke her foot, which required five days in the hospital. She is a self-employed massage therapist and does not have health insurance. She started physical therapy recently but hasn’t been able to work for several months, which means she has no income. The medical bills totaled $32,000, and we hadn’t heard from the charity program we applied to. We were paying what little we could, but we were discouraged. When I heard Pastor David’s message, “Living the Miraculous,” I was inspired to continue to believe God for a miracle to help pay the bill. Just the other evening I was sitting on the bed, opening the day’s mail, and I opened a letter that said our account had

been approved for charity. It said our new balance is $0.00! I had to read it three times before it sunk in! I shared it with my daughter, and we cried and praised God for His amazing provision.” >> Mashelle James
During Pastor Robert’s Room 12 series and Michael Jr.’s message “How Comedy Works,” each campus had an incredible number of professions of faith. In all, we had 1,116 people give their lives to the Lord! 1,116 Salvations

HEART FOR THE KINGDOM UPDATE We’re making great strides with our Heart for the Kingdom initiatives by KATIE SMITH
EACH YEAR, YOUR HEART FOR THE KINGDOM COMMITMENTS help Gateway move forward with
God’s work. We are able to invest in ministries, renovate and expand campuses, pursue God’s vision for the community, and take care of internal needs. We are blessed to have such a giving church. Here’s an update on this year’s Heart for the Kingdom initiatives:
SOUTHLAKE CAMPUS PARKING With attendance continuing to rise, parking at the Southlake Campus has been on everyone’s minds. We’re happy to tell you that this initiative is now very near to becoming a reality! Expansion of the Southlake Campus parking lot will begin in mid-fall with a tentative completion in early 2015. During this time, weekly services and activities will still occur. Expanding the parking will positively affect the experience each member and guest has when attending the Southlake Campus. NRH CAMPUS UPDATES AND IMPROVEMENTS The NRH Campus just keeps growing, and with more people comes a need for more space. We are currently working to redesign the campus to accommodate all the weekly activities more effectively. Construction on the bookstore, café, children’s area, and additional office space will begin sometime in 2015.
DEBT RETIREMENT God calls us to be good stewards of His resources, and Gateway continually seeks to follow this command. One of the initiatives we have been working toward in 2014 is paying off some debt incurred last year when launching several campuses. We have made great headway and have decreased the debt by over $4 million. FUTURE SITES FOR NEW EXTENSION CAMPUSES People go where God is present, and Gateway is blessed with His presence. We also have the ability to grow and spread His Word into new neighborhoods and areas of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. We have identified the next six areas where we feel the Lord has called us to launch extension campuses. Continue to pray for God’s leading as we confirm exact locations.
“PEOPLE GO WHERE GOD IS PRESENT, AND GATEWAY IS BLESSED WITH HIS PRESENCE.”

TOTAL CAMPUS
The Grand Prairie Campus is in for a total makeover! by KATIE SMITH
SOON AFTER GATEWAY ADOPTED THE GRAND PRAIRIE CAMPUS, it became clear we were rapidly
outgrowing its capacity. Now we’re bursting at the seams—attendance has increased 65% since last year! Our makeover will include a café, kids’ play area, classrooms, bookstore, and space for the children’s ministry to flourish.
Construction in the Atrium and Auditorium has already begun. The master plan includes four phases. We’ve diligently prayed and sought wise counsel to design a facility that will enhance campus growth while keeping costs reasonable. We know that church is more than a building, but we also know that resources such as a bookstore, space for classes, and an expanded kids’ wing can greatly enhance ministry at Gateway. We’re excited to see what God will do as we expand and improve our campus! PHASE 1:
• Services will continue to be held, and all activities will have space allocated. • Two-thirds of the building will be closed for construction. • The kids’ wing, café, bookstore, classrooms, kids’ play area, and overflow/student multipurpose area will be built. • Extra side entrances to the kids’ wing will be created.
Phase 1 will be completed by late spring 2015.
PHASES 2–4:
• Services will continue to be held. • The rest of the building (including the Auditorium) and the parking lot will be under construction. • The Auditorium will receive a full makeover and seating reconfiguration.
The entire renovation is currently slated to finish by fall of 2015. Because of your Heart for the Kingdom commitments and faithful giving, we’ll truly have the full Gateway experience and be poised for continued growth at the Grand Prairie Campus by this time next year.
HERE WE “GROW ” AGAIN! Stats
Additions
• 653 parking spaces • 1,052 seats in the Auditorium • Approximately 80,000 total square feet »»To compare: North Fort Worth has 65,000 total square feet
• Kids’ play area (Bubble Land) • Expanded kids’ wing • Gateway Café • Passages Bookstore • Classrooms • Overflow/student multipurpose area

ELEVEN YEARS AGO, GATEWAY HELD ITS FIRST FALL FESTIVAL,
an event designed to give Gateway families a fun and safe alternative to Halloween activities. It’s come a long way since then. In fact, this year’s Fall Festival will take place at the Frisco Campus on Wednesday, October 15, as well as the Southlake Campus on Wednesday, October 29, turning both campus parking lots into full-blown amusement parks. You’ll be able to take your family on rides, play games, watch a show on the entertainment stage,
and grab a bite at one of the many food trucks on site. However, the most important thing you can do is make memories with your family and friends. That’s what Fall Festival is all about. There won’t be any scary haunted houses—it’s all about having fun and enjoying the Gateway community. Family tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door, and individual tickets are $5.
12 BIBLE CHARACTER COSTUMES WE WON’T SEE AT FALL FESTIVAL Even though Gateway’s Fall Festival isn’t a Halloween event, it still gives kids a chance to dress up. Every year we see some Iron Man and princess costumes, but an overwhelming amount of kids show up as Moses and Noah—so many in fact, there’s no body of water

THE WALLS FOUGHT AGAINST CANCER, BUT THE TRUE BATTLE WAS FOR THEIR MARRIAGE by DANIEL HOPKINS
+Austin Wall’s doctor is baffled. Any time Austin goes in for a routine visit, there is a word the doctor uses: miracle. There is also a word she refuses to say: remission. + In January 2003, Austin was at work when a seizure sent him to the hospital. He’d never had a seizure or any other health problems, so he and his wife Jessica immediately sensed something was wrong. “They did a CT scan, and that’s when they found a tumor lodged in his brain,” she
12 OCTOBER 2014
says. An emergency surgery was scheduled, and the next morning a doctor successfully removed the tumor. However, because of the tumor’s location in his brain, the doctor was unable to scrape out the residue left behind, and Austin was told he had three to five years to live. The tumor was diagnosed as a grade three anaplastic astrocytoma. Even with the heavy cycle of chemotherapy and radiation that followed, doctors said it wasn’t a matter of if the cancer would return, it was a matter of when.
+ Several years before receiving this crippling news, Austin and Jessica enjoyed a carefree life. They were introduced to each other in a Fort Worth honky-tonk called The Neon Moon Saloon in April 1999 and returned to the smoky bar several nights a week. “He was the cowboy I’d always dreamed about,” Jessica says. They were married a year later and had their son Shane in September of 2001—right around the time the World Trade Center towers crumbled in New York City. +As the September 11 terrorist attacks delivered a stiff blow to the economy, Austin’s work became unstable, and he was laid off several times from different jobs. During that time, the couple barely scraped by—he picked up work with his dad’s landscaping business, and Jessica made just enough to send their son to daycare. Austin became a hothead, and his anger at their circumstances began to damage their marriage. “When I was diagnosed, we probably weren’t going to be together by the end of the year,” says Austin. “But our problems got put on hold because we had to figure out a way to keep him alive,” adds Jessica. This circumstance would ultimately bring them closer together, but not before it tore them apart even more. + During two years of chemotherapy and radiation, Austin lost more than 35 pounds, and his anger and depression became overwhelming. He turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism, and the worse things got, the more he drank. “He stayed in the bottle,” says Jessica, tears rolling down her face. “Our home was full of darkness, addiction, and brokenness. There were times when I sat on the kitchen floor with my husband while he held a gun because he was ready to be done.” + This was the state of their marriage for years, but somewhere along the way the Walls began casually attending a local church. Doctors were surprised Austin was still alive, but they were quick to strike down any feelings of hope, saying that the probability of the cancer returning was still high. Those words hung in the air like a dark cloud. “I hated everyone around me, including God,” says Austin. Jessica felt like a prisoner in her own home. She prayed for a way out, and God answered her prayers in a way she never expected. + In October 2012, she heard the Lord tell her, “You need to go to Gateway.” She knew Austin would not want to go so she kept it to herself. In December, she learned about a Christian-based marriage conference, and she knew they needed to be there. “I texted him one day—I
couldn’t even tell him face-to-face—I said, ‘I want to go to this,’” says Jessica. Reluctantly, he agreed to go. + They went to the conference not knowing what to expect, and almost instantly both of them encountered God’s presence. “It was like a light switch,” says Jessica. “God literally flipped the switch! Our lives changed in an instant.” After seeing the remarkable change in her husband she knew she could tell him about the word God had given her about Gateway. Surprisingly, Austin was interested in going, and right away it felt like home. + In the months that followed, Austin, who hadn’t been a leader in his home for years, began setting the pace. Jessica couldn’t believe the change. “I was just waiting for him to fall, because that’s what always happened before,” she says. “This time, he never did. He ran as fast as he could, seeking the Lord.”
“God literally flipped the switch! Our lives changed in an instant.” +Austin stopped drinking and realized how much his depression had hurt his wife. He started making things right. When they began tithing, they immediately saw their once dismal finances improve. Now, the Walls are Gateway Group leaders at the Grand Prairie Campus, and he helps mentor men who are struggling with addiction. “People who knew him years ago just cry when they see him today because he is such a different person,” says Jessica. + The cancer the doctors say should have killed Austin a decade ago has never returned. It no longer hangs over their heads because it’s not their focus anymore. It went from being the center of their story to only a small part. “It doesn’t have anything to do with cancer anymore,” says Jessica. “It’s about two married people living through hell and having God restore their marriage. That’s our testimony.” GL

HEALING IS EASY MIRACLES HAPPEN EVERY WEEK IN GATEWAY’S HEALING ROOMS by DANIEL HOPKINS

14 OCTOBER 2014

I
t was the kind of weather that makes people want to get out and ride a bike. So on a recent Saturday, Jonathan Mendoza decided to take his three-year-old daughter to their neighborhood park to teach her to ride one. Her bike was outfitted with training wheels, so falling over wasn’t a problem. It was a matter of working the pedals that took some time for her. Jonathan, being a good dad, spent about 45 minutes hunched over her bike, propelling her forward until she got the hang of it. At sixfeet, four-inches tall, bending down over a small child’s bike was not easy for him.
The process in the healing rooms is simple. At 7:00 pm, the doors open to the public. When people come in, they’re asked to fill out a form describing their prayer need, then they wait in a room designed to help them unwind and relax. Groups of 10 view a short video that gives basic information on healing and sets people at ease. “It really prepares people to receive,” says Buddy, “It gives them the opportunity to shift their focus away from their problem and onto what God is doing.” Communion is served and then people are ushered into the Auditorium where they receive prayer.
As they started to walk home, Jonathan noticed tightness in his lower back. It continued to get worse until he couldn’t walk any farther. He called his wife Kate to come pick them up, and he spent the rest of the weekend in bed. At work on Monday, he fought through the pain. That’s when a coworker mentioned he should go to Gateway’s healing rooms, where Healing Ministry is held every Monday night. He was hesitant to go because, growing up in a church that often saw miraculous healings, he didn’t think his back pain warranted a trip to church. “I didn’t feel like it was a big enough deal to bother everyone about,” he says. “I just felt like my body would eventually heal itself.”
“Our part is to lay hands on the sick, and God’s part is to do the healing.”
Kate had a different opinion. She suggested Jonathan go, and he took her advice and went. As it turns out, she was right—there is no problem so small that God doesn’t care about it. After it was all over—his trip to the healing rooms took about 30 minutes—he walked out and sat back down in his car and all of the tension in his back was completely gone. And the next morning when he woke up, all the pain associated with his back was completely, miraculously gone. Buddy Atkinson, Gateway’s Healing Ministry coordinator, says miracles like this happen all the time. Every Monday night he gathers with some 40 volunteers at the NRH Campus, and they pray for miraculous healings. “A healing is anything from one percent to a hundred percent,” says Ryan Boles, a prayer leader with Gateway’s Healing Ministry. Sometimes it’s a big healing. One night a man with one leg shorter than the other came in for prayer. The team prayed for him and watched as his shorter leg grew out. However, more often, the healing is subtle. A few months ago, a couple brought their toddler to the healing rooms because she had a cyst on her wrist. “She was prayed for, and there was no immediate sign of change,” says Buddy. “But over three months, it gradually got smaller. Now, it’s completely gone.”
The entire process is very low-key and relaxed. “People come in, and they’re hesitant because they don’t know what to expect,” says Ryan. “We put them at ease and help them feel comfortable.” The process rarely lasts longer than 30 minutes. At the end, people are invited to attend a short class called Lifestyle of Healing, which teaches on changing bad habits and maintaining a healthy lifestyle so previous issues don’t return. “Healing is so simple,” says Ryan. “Our part is to lay hands on the sick, and God’s part is to do the healing.” That’s exactly what God has been doing for the 40 or 50 people who come to the healing rooms each week in need of a miracle. But Jonathan Mendoza, whose back has been perfectly healthy since his visit there, will tell you it isn’t just a physical miracle that takes place—it’s much more than that. “It was cool to be connected to this group,” he says. “The experience definitely helped me grow in my faith.” GL
The healing rooms are open at 7:00 pm on Mondays at the NRH Campus. For more information, visit healing.gatewaypeople.com.

“WE CRY OUT” by DANIEL HOPKINS MANY PEOPLE DESIGNATE A SMALL
space in their home for spending time with the Lord. Pastor Walker Beach went a step further; he made his. He converted his garage to a recording studio more than a decade ago, and since then, many songs have been birthed out of his devotional times spent there. “It’s just a quiet place where I can get away from everything,” he says, “and pour my heart out without disturbing anybody in the house.” “We Cry Out” was written during a period of desperation. Walker would spend much of his quiet times praying for his family and friends. “I went through a season when I was interceding for the salvation of some specific people in my life,” he says. “That’s when ‘We Cry Out’ was born.” Though you could hardly call it a quiet time, the idea for the song came when he was praying, and he began to call out the different names of God listed in the Bible. “We read in the Old Testament that many times the people of Israel when they got in trouble, they would call out the name of the Lord,” he says. “And in the New Testament, on the day of Pentecost, the Bible says, ‘They called on the name of the Lord.’” There was another scripture that stood out to Walker that morning as he prayed for his family. In Acts 16:31, a prison guard asked Paul and Silas what he must do to be saved. The scripture says, “They said, ‘Put your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and you and your family will be saved from the punishment of sin.’” That’s when Walker realized the key to contending for his family was calling on God. When Walker began putting pen to paper, the different names of God became the centerpiece of the song. The chorus, simple yet powerful, says, “El Shaddai, God of grace, Lord most high, Jesus Christ / We rely on Your grace, Adonai, crowned in grace, Lord most high, Jesus Christ.” “What I tried to do in the song was the equivalent of calling God ‘Daddy,’” he says. “Certainly our Heavenly Father who has His ear pressed to our hearts will be there when He hears our call.” The truth is, there’s a great deal of power that comes from calling out God’s name. “I remember the very first time I spoke the name of Jesus as an adult, and I remember something changed,” says Walker. “Don’t underestimate the power of simply calling out the name of the Lord.” “We Cry Out” is on Gateway Worship’s Wake Up the World, which can be purchased at Passages and on iTunes.

pastors stopped me and said, “Ministry can’t be your hobby. It’s not healthy. My challenge to you is to go back home and get a hobby.” I returned to Louisiana and a pastor friend of mine got me into bow hunting. Ever since I moved to Texas, my hobby has been riding a fixed-gear bike. WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER, I had a season of what I call “developing my testimony.” My parents went through a divorce when I was about 15, and I just got really bitter at everything and everybody. I went on the run from God.
JASON LAIRD IS THE EXECUTIVE PASTOR OF GATEWAY STUDENTS. HE AND HIS WIFE JENNIFER HAVE TWO BOYS, LIAM (4) AND NIXON (2). HE HAS BEEN ON STAFF SINCE AUGUST 2013.
I GREW UP in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but I’ve lived in a few different states. My parents were church planters and evangelists, so I also lived in Mississippi, Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama. It would just be for small seasons while they planted churches. JENNIFER AND I have been married for nine years. We started dating in high school—she was in ninth

ONE DAY WHEN I WAS 18, I went to my mom’s apartment to catch a ride with her to Florida. She was going on vacation, and I had some friends in Panama. When I got to her apartment, I went upstairs and it was such a mess. I immediately recognized that’s what my life looked like. I told myself, my life is empty, and then I saw a Bible. I randomly opened it to 1 Peter 1:18, which says, “For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.” That was when my life turned around. grade and I was in tenth. After high school, she went off to college three hours away from where I lived in Baton Rouge. During her senior year, she went on a mission trip to Milan, Italy. I surprised her by flying over there. I found her in the city and proposed. WE LOVE TO TRAVEL. When we go to another city, we love to have conversations with people who live there. One of my favorite things about San Francisco is sitting down in a restaurant—the space is so cramped that everybody has to sit right up next to each other—and have conversations with people. You end up meeting people from all over the world in tiny coffee shops and restaurants like that. It’s probably our favorite thing to do when we travel. I NEVER HAD A HOBBY UNTIL 2008, when I spoke at Hillsong in Australia. We were at dinner afterward, and everyone was talking about their hobbies— riding motorcycles, golf, etc. And then they asked me, “What’s your hobby?” I didn’t have one. They started giving me a hard time about it, so I just said, “Ministry is my hobby.” Afterward, one of the
MAYBE IT’S BECAUSE OF MY OWN STORY, but I love believing in the people that others have given up on. When I first got saved, very few people gave me a chance in ministry. Because of that, I made a commitment to be a big believer in people, especially the ones others have written off. THE KEY TO REACHING STUDENTS is being authentic and pointing people to Jesus. It’s very simple. Students, now more than ever before, know when they see something fake or phony. All they want is something real and authentic. If it’s not, then they write it off quickly. I THINK STUDENTS are a lot smarter than people think. One of the things I love about Pastor Robert is that he’ll make a really profound statement and then he’ll say, “Let me say it like this.” He’ll put it in simpler terms and make sure everyone in the room understands. We have to do that too because Gateway Students has a wide age range (7th through 12th grade).
