to see it when it’s ready. However, what I love most about all this is that the church is leading the way. It’s been a long time (probably hundreds of years) since the church was at the center of art and music and literature and poetry. WELCOME to GATEWAY LIFE we’re moving into, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” is playing in the background and it reminds me of the unparalleled privilege we have to live at this time in life. Advances in medicine, science, technology, and other innovations have turned the landscape of what could be from small possibilities to huge opportunities. What you may not know is that Gateway is playing an innovative role in creating a new online tool that will change the landscape of discipleship and learning as we know it today. At Gateway, we believe prayer is essential to a believer’s life. And we also believe that when we join together in prayer, something powerful happens and people’s lives begin to change. So far this year, Gateway’s Prayer and Intercession Ministry has received more than 10,000 prayer requests and each one has been prayed for individually. Here are just a few prayer testimonies. “My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was given only a few months to live. We prayed and asked for prayer from Gateway. During what the doctor said would be his last days, we found out that his cancer is in remission and his blood work showed no signs of cancer!” >> Shawna Garza
“Recently after a Mix56 service, I had a child come up to me and say that during altar ministry he felt like God spoke to him and told him to have Pastor Josh pray for his fractured wrist. I began to pray in the name of Jesus for God to supernaturally heal his arm. While I was praying, he started moving his fingers, then his wrist. Afterward, he took the cast off and moved his wrist all around. I asked him if the pain was gone and he said it was. He was healed!” >> Pastor Joshua Blount
“I requested prayer for my mother who had suffered three cardiac arrests, was in a coma, and was not expected to survive. Brain damage was probable if she survived. Well,
my mother woke up with no brain damage and has completely recovered. Doctors said they’ve never seen anybody recover from this situation so quickly and without any permanent problems. Praise God!” >> John
quickly. The doctors say that it is a miracle for a baby in his condition to be recovering this fast.” >> Lesya
We received 9500 prayer requests from January 1 to May 9, 2014:
“I asked for prayer for finances or work because I was thinking about leaving my current career to go into another field, but I wasn’t sure. God sent me the message I needed! The day that I received an email from Gateway that the prayer team was praying for me, I received a call from a lady needing my services. The transaction we are now working on will pay me more in the next month than I made all of last year. Thank you so much for your prayers; God is great!” >> Jeff
“I asked for prayer for my cousin’s baby, who was born prematurely and could not breathe on his own. The next week, he was taken off the machine and began breathing without help. He will stay in the hospital a while longer but he is improving

KENNETH FAMBRO
UNDER
COVER Meet the three men joining Gateway’s team of elders
NELSON MITCHELL
TRA WILLBANKS
by KATIE SMITH
8 SEPTEMBER 2014
KENNETH FAMBRO TO SAY GATEWAY IS A LARGE CHURCH is an understatement. With more than 36,000 active members and 5,500 volunteers, Gateway is constantly brimming with activity. So how do we maintain the vision of the church with so much going on? Who provides the spiritual covering for the flocks of people walking through our doors each week? Who oversees and backs up the teaching of sound doctrine and helps equip believers behind the scenes to live for Jesus Christ? The job is difficult but the answer is simple: Gateway’s team of elders.
God knew that no one man, as amazing and versatile as he may be, could do all that. So God called for elders, asking pastors to appoint trustworthy, blameless, God-fearing men to “Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly” (1 Peter 5:2, NKJV). The sheep are well taken care of when the shepherd has others on whom he can rely. The elders at Gateway meet regularly to pray and discuss policy decisions, ministries, direction, and anything else that affects the church as a whole. No decision is acted upon unless they unanimously agree. Without these principled, humble men leading, Gateway would not be the place it is today. We are privileged to have 16 seasoned believers (both staff and nonstaff ), including Pastor Robert, serving the people of Gateway in this capacity. You may have heard Pastor Robert mention most of the elders by name, and we’ve even had a chance to hear some of them share from the platform, but there are three who have been appointed in recent months who you may not know yet. Using 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 as character guideposts, Kenneth Fambro, Nelson Mitchell, and Tra Willbanks—all nonstaff elders—will serve the people of Gateway and its vision. Here’s a little more about them.
“THE WITHOUT SHEEP THESE ARE WELL PRINCIPLED, HUMBLE TAKEN CARE MENOF LEADING, WHEN THE GATEWAY SHEPHERD WOULD HAS OTHERS NOT BE ON THE WHOM PLACE HE CAN IT ISRELY.” TODAY.
To learn more about all of our elders, visit bios.gatewaypeople.com.
Kenneth Fambro, his wife Irini, and their two kids started attending Gateway eight years ago and have since seen incredible change in their lives. They came to Gateway hungry for more of God and through various ministries and Pastor Robert’s messages, the Holy Spirit opened their eyes to things like fully living in the Spirit, taking a Sabbath, and ministering beyond Sunday. “Now I see God in worship, in the numbers, in the details, and in the teachings as well as in the hard decisions,” Kenneth says. Outside of Gateway, Kenneth is the vice president of development at Integrated Real Estate.
NELSON MITCHELL Nelson Mitchell, president of History Maker Homes, understands the power of equipping God’s people with the knowledge of God’s presence, generosity, and joy. Eight years ago, he and his family were searching for a church. When they walked into Gateway, they knew they were home. They’ve experienced immense spiritual growth, which they believe is a direct result of God’s hand on Gateway’s obedience to equip people to be successful Christ-followers. “The message and spirit of generosity at Gateway has challenged me and given me greater levels of joy and understanding about giving and loving people,” he says.
TRA WILLBANKS Parents to seven children, Tra Willbanks and his wife Shelly have been attending Gateway since 2006. They knew Gateway was home when they picked up their kids from children’s ministry and saw the teachers praying over them. Tra and Shelly have watched their children come to know Jesus better. “All three of our boys have been saved while attending Gateway,” he says. Through Pastor Robert’s teaching, Tra and his family have experienced the Holy Spirit impact every area of their lives, from parenting to business to marriage. We’re pleased to have these godly men serving God with us here at Gateway! GL

THE NEW APP DESIGNED TO REVOLUTIONIZE THE WAY WE DO CHURCH
by DANIEL HOPKINS — WHEN JASON WENELL BOARDED
a Sun Country
Airlines Flight on Monday, November 4, he had Gateway Church in his lapel pocket. Jason took his seat in the crowded cabin and reached for his phone, habitually opening the beta version of the myGateway app. He, along with the Spiritual Life Technology Team, led by Pastor Shawn Ring, had been working around the clock for two years to create a new app and website that would revolutionize the way we engage with church. •
10 SEPTEMBER 2014
A plane and a prayer.
• The woman next to him was talkative and when she learned he worked for Gateway, she shared about her son who had been a Christian but left the faith. She asked Jason for prayer and he agreed. As the plane landed, Jason typed a message into the myGateway app and told her he’d have other staff members praying for her as well. Then, something amazing began to happen: his phone began chiming as the app alerted him of all the people who’d been praying for her son. He showed her the messages and tears filled her eyes. Other passengers noticed the commotion and asked what was going on, and Jason was able to share about the app and about Gateway Church. Instead of bringing them to church, he brought the church to them—and that’s exactly what myGateway is designed to do. “myGateway extends my church family and everything I do at church into my rhythm of life,” says Pastor Shawn. In other words, it becomes a part of your daily life—not just when you’re at church—and it provides you with community, engagement, and spiritual growth.
It helps pastors build teachings around the needs and interests of the people in the congregation and it helps myGateway to know what inspires you. 3. Spiritual Growth
Each time you use myGateway, it records your likes and interests so it can help support you in your spiritual growth and recommend your next steps for continued growth. “It’s a system that can take a snapshot of you and then place you on a path of learning,” says Pastor Shawn.
“MYGATEWAY EXTENDS MY CHURCH FAMILY AND EVERYTHING I DO AT CHURCH INTO MY RHYTHM OF LIFE”
1. Community
In John 4, Jesus encounters a woman at a well where she draws water every day. He asks her to draw water for Him and He introduces the kingdom of God to her. All of this happens while the woman goes about her daily routine. In the same way, myGateway is designed to become a part of your daily life, and it does so through community. It offers a place for you to join groups, share prayer requests and discussions, offer prayer, and much more. Every time you open the app, you’re rejoining your community. Church stops being limited to Sundays and becomes a daily thing. 2. Engagement
myGateway opens a channel for engagement that will make it easy to receive pastoral care and mentorship from pastors and leaders in the church any time, day or night. It can be as simple as reading text or watching a brief video posted by a pastor and clicking a button that indicates you’ve been inspired. This does two things:
The power of the church, everywhere.
This is just the beginning of what myGateway can do for you, and the starting point is easy and fun. Simply download the free myGateway app onto your Apple or Android device, or visit the website at mygateway.gatewaypeople.com and begin connecting with people and groups just like you would on other social media networks. What sets myGateway apart is this: “Pastors have played a huge role in this project, working in close collaboration with our technology experts,” says Pastor Shawn. “What that’s done is yielded ministry-focused tools.” However, it won’t just be pastors working behind the scenes. More than a thousand volunteers will be equipped to engage with users. Through myGateway, you’ll open up a world of community and engagement and set yourself on a path of spiritual growth. And the next time you get on a plane, walk into your coffee shop or go about your daily routine, you’ll have Gateway Church in your pocket as well. GL

How can I be a part of this?
by DANIEL HOPKINS
12  SEPTEMBER 2014
L
uke and Lindsey Beasley were an hour into the search for their first home as their real estate agent led them to a house in Euless. They had saved up for a down payment and all that was left to do was find the perfect place. Considering it was a seller’s market, they expected it to be a difficult process; however, the way they would come across their house would be nothing short of miraculous. They saw a few less-than-beautiful homes during their first few stops. But when they came to this house in Euless, it seemed perfect. The more time they spent meandering across the wood floors in the house, the more they fell in love with it. It didn’t hurt that there was a saltwater pool in the backyard and just past that, a large, well-used tree house decked out with twinkle lights. Lindsey envisioned her future children—both biological and foster—playing in the backyard. The first two years of Luke and Lindsey’s marriage were spent in the mission field working with AIDS orphans in Zambia. Their hearts were broken for orphans abroad and back home in the United States. When they returned to Texas in 2012, they felt God calling them to become foster parents. Lindsey knew in her heart this house would be home for her family. As they left, they noticed a garage sale next door. Lindsey walked over to introduce herself to the neighbors and find out more about the neighborhood. They turned out to be close friends with the sellers and had lived next door to them for more than 20 years. “There’s even a gate in the backyard that connects the two houses,” says Lindsey. “They’re those kind of friends.” Everything was so positive, but there was one problem: it was out of their price range. Months before they began their home search, when they started saving for a down payment, they prayed separately for the amount of money they should save. Remarkably, God gave them the exact same number. Months went by, their savings grew, and in May a friend called. The friend said the Lord told him to give Luke and Lindsey $4,000, which was, to the dollar, the amount they had left to save. That’s when their search led them to their dream home in Euless. The realtor suggested they look at more houses, but none of the others compared. Then he said, “You guys really liked that house; it’s worth a second look.” After a few phone calls, the owners were happy to step out to accommodate the Beasley’s request for a second viewing
that same day. When they returned, they noticed the garage sale was still going on next door. They walked in again and Lindsey had an idea. “I told Luke and the realtor, ‘I bet you anything the owners are at that garage sale,’” she says. She walked over and, sure enough, there were the sellers, Bobby and Donna. “Their house had crosses hanging on the walls and Bibles were out in the open, so I knew they were Christians,” she says. “I cut right to the chase and told them, ‘We want to move into a home that feels homey, comfortable, and welcoming to children, because we feel that the Lord has called us to be foster parents.’” Immediately, tears welled up in Donna’s eyes and she replied, “We moved into this home 20 years ago because God told us to be foster parents.” Lindsey’s vision of foster kids playing in the backyard tree house had already been a reality for 20 years. Everything about the house seemed so timely and perfect—there was just that issue of the price. The Beasleys decided to send in a low offer anyway. When they did Lindsey felt led to include a letter explaining that they couldn’t afford the full asking price and how she envisioned the house being used for her future foster children. She wrote, “I understand that your home is worth more than what we’re able to offer, and if you end up choosing another offer, God bless you. I know God has the right buyer for you.”
“We moved into this home 20 years ago because God told us to be foster parents.” Later that day, their realtor contacted them with even better news than expected. The sellers not only lowered the price of the house, but they paid a huge chunk of the Beasleys’ down payment. And to top it off, they left lawn equipment, patio furniture, a freezer, and, because they had been foster parents, the home was fully set up to pass state regulations for a foster care home. In the end, it was more than just a real estate sale. It was about a home with a purpose. And during that transaction, Bobby and Donna realized it was as if the home was built for a specific reason. “I feel like this home’s purpose is to love foster kids,” says Donna. “We’re just transitioning it to the next couple with that calling.” GL

PASTOR ROBERT
One of my all-time favorite bloopers happened years ago when we held weekend services at World of Learning Daycare Center, on Timberline across from Grapevine High School. It was a church on the weekends and a daycare during the week, so there were a lot of dirty diapers. We would walk in the building on the weekend, and because they changed the babies in the bathrooms all week, it smelled. During one of our weekend services, I was attempting to share with the congregation that this was not our permanent home and not where we were going to stay. I explained that we were like a hole-in-the-wall restaurant right now—a bad building, a bad location, but great food. I said, “As a matter of fact, many of you don’t know this, but I get here before all of you and that smell you smell in the bathrooms is me.” Now, what I meant was that I took air freshener and sprayed it around the building, but I forgot to mention the air freshener.
PASTOR DAVID SMITH
I started traveling in a rock-and-roll band in the ‘70s. Two members of our band, Bob and Jayne Ferrell, performed at a big Baptist church on Easter Sunday morning. The service was being recorded and broadcast on television. As Bob began setting up a song, he talked about how the enemy comes against you and tries to hurt you. He tried to say, “When Satan starts throwing those fiery darts at you …,” but he stumbled through the phrase and accidentally said, “diery farts.” Everyone started laughing so hard that Bob never really got the congregation back on track. I still give Bob a hard time about it today.
PASTOR JELANI LEWIS
During some pretty crazy weather last year, I was doing oversight at the Frisco Campus. One of the things I like to do is encourage people to greet each other by saying something funny like, “Hey, you look better than you did last week.” This particular weekend, because the weather was so crazy, I had people greet each other by saying, “Welcome to this erratic Texas weather.” At the 10:45 am service, one of our elders, Steve Dulin, came to the service with his family. Anytime one of the elders comes to visit, I want to make sure I get everything right. I was a little nervous, so I accidentally had people greet each other by saying, “Welcome to this erotic Texas weather.” When I said “erotic,” everyone burst into laughter, and I was embarrassed. It was a humbling and humorous moment.
PASTOR MARK JOBE
I administrated a youth camp for more than two decades, and during one camp, some of the junior high students decided to do a special dance. Each of the dancers stood in front of the stage holding a lit candle because the theme of the song was “light of the world.” All of a sudden, here comes this big, scary-looking man running down the aisle. He ran in front of the students and blew their candles out. They were terrified until we realized it was the building maintenance guy. He was under strict orders to not allow any candles in the auditorium, but he failed to tell anyone. Half of those kids are probably going through freedom ministry now just because of that maintenance guy! GL
PASTOR TIM ROSS
I come from a heavy Pentecostal background, and one time I was in a service and the preacher began giving an exhortation. This one guy in the congregation became so excited that he started running up, down, and around the aisles shouting. When he got up to the front, he went to turn down the middle aisle toward the back of the auditorium, but he overshot his turn and went crashing into the front few rows. It was like when a basketball player dives into the crowd for a ball. He finally came to a stop in the fifth row with his legs dangling in the air. The preacher didn’t know what to do, so he just kept on preaching as if nothing happened.

KARI JOBE AND HER BAND were holed up in a remote cabin in Tennessee. The Great Smoky Mountains provided a scenic backdrop as the group worked to write songs for Kari’s new album Majestic. Some of the songs on the album came easily as the band sought God and worshipped together. Others were born from real-life situations. Such was the case with “Only Your Love,” one of Majestic’s upbeat tracks. Amy Davis, the wife of Kari’s bassist, Ben, wasn’t at the songwriting session in the cabin. She was back home, running her housecleaning business—but she was having a songwriting session of her own. A songwriter at heart, she called Ben and told him she was frustrated that she wasn’t able follow her passion for music and instead cleaned houses for a living. “She was having one of those mornings of saying ‘Lord, I want to be able to write more music,’” says Kari. A few hours later she called again, but this time something was different. “She said, ‘I’ve been praying and seeking the Lord and I just started getting this melody in my mind and heart,’” says Kari. “So she sang it to us, and it became the melody for the chorus of ‘Only Your Love.’” Out of a moment of bringing her desire to the Lord, He answered Amy and sent her a melody that would go on to become a prominent part of “Only Your Love.” “It’s a testament to how high and how deep and how wide Christ’s love is,” says Kari. “We can’t do anything that His love doesn’t cover.” That concept—the depth of God’s love for us—became the central focus of the song and is most poignant in the lyrics of the second verse: “Your love is overwhelming / Brought me to life again / Your love, it will last forever / In You there’ll be no end.” These declarations refocus our hearts to a posture of worship, which makes the song so powerful and strategic. Because of its upbeat rhythm and catchy chorus, it almost always precedes the deeper, slower worship songs in Kari’s set. It’s like an appetizer that prepares us for the main course—God’s presence. But to leave it at that would do “Only Your Love” a disservice. The song’s melody and lyrics have some serious heft—almost charging into God’s throne room to declare His goodness. “We need songs that declare the praises of God,” says Kari. “When we declare who God is, He reminds us who we are, and it shifts the atmosphere in our hearts.”

I ALSO LIKE PLAYING DRUMS. I’ve been playing drums almost as long as I’ve been volunteering in Tech Arts. I got my first drum set from the Single Parent Families Ministry during Christmas a few years ago. I didn’t know what I was doing at first, but the different drummers at Gateway started teaching me how to play. Now I play percussion for Gateway Students, and one day I hope to play drums during weekend services. ONE OF MY MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENTS happened when I went to put the podium on the stage because I was told Pastor Robert was going to be preaching live. As soon as I turned around, I realized it was a video service and I quickly grabbed it and got it back offstage. It was all in the dark so no one in the audience knew. Everyone in Tech Arts likes a good joke, and they got me on that one!
KYLE KENNEDY AT AGE 14, KYLE IS ONE OF THE YOUNGEST VOLUNTEERS AT GATEWAY. HE CAN BE SEEN CARRYING THE PODIUM TO THE FRONT OF THE STAGE DURING WEEKEND SERVICES AT THE SOUTHLAKE CAMPUS, BUT MOST OF HIS WORK IS DONE BEHIND THE SCENES WITH TECH ARTS.
I’M THE YOUNGEST OF FIVE. My brothers and sisters all volunteer and work at Gateway. I STARTED VOLUNTEERING with Tech Arts when I was 10. I wasn’t very excited about it at first, but I went because my mom asked me to. I was shyer back then and I didn’t know anyone because we were newer to Gateway. Once I got to know the people, I felt more comfortable. Now, I’m really interested in Tech Arts and becoming an audio engineer. ONE OF MY FAVORITE PEOPLE to work with is Jenni Diaz. She is an audio engineer, which means she runs sound for the musicians and makes sure they can hear everything onstage at the Southlake Campus. WHEN I FIRST STARTED, I didn’t know much about technology, but now I love it. I run sound on the monitor board during weekend services. Jenni and the others have taught me well. It’s really fun.

PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW I danced in The Nutcracker when I was younger. It was with a professional ballet company formed by two Kirov Ballet Principal dancers. I wouldn’t do it again, though. I’m not a big fan of what they wear. THE MOST RECENT BOOK I’VE READ is Robinson Crusoe. I like to read classic literature and my family reads a lot of books together at night before we go to bed. MY FAVORITE MUSIC is from Hillsong and Hillsong United. I really like Gateway Generate and the songs that David Moore has written. I like Switchfoot too, but my favorite music is worship music. I LIKE SPORTS. I’m not super athletic, but I enjoy playing with friends. If I had to choose between sports and music, I would definitely choose music. IF I COULD BE AMAZING AT ANYTHING, I would be an amazing musician. That’s what I want to be when I grow up—either that or an audio engineer.
