The project was at Bomba Submission Stage. I was assigned to calculate the NFA of the office & service apartment of type A, B & C. From the task, I learned that the ratio of different type of spaces such as M&E, fire staircases, circulation spaces, living units and so on are crucial in maximising the building overall profit. Also, I was assigned to tabulate number of carpark provided in respect to each floor. The total number of carpark should be wisely considered to cater to all apartment units.

Drawing - Detailing

I was assigned to prepare tender drawings for Staircase 5 and Staircase 8. Firstly, I was to draw detail plans for the staircases up to roof level (27th floor) according to the standard drawing convention of the company. The number and height of risers were to double check with each floor height. From this I learnt further in-depth about the By-Laws regarding to fire staircases. The risers should not exceed 180mm and turning of landing should not be overlapping with fire door swing. Also, I was exposed to the construction materials and techniques of fire safety shaft such as 150mm thick brick wall and 230mm thick R.C. shear wall and beam alignment in relation to air pressurization shaft and fire rated wall placement at each floor. After that, I was to draw the section of the fire safety shaft, projecting from the plans respectively. In this case, I learnt about the minimum headroom of 2300mm for all landings and staircase construction. At Level 9A, a double landing staircase was introduced into staircase 5 whereas a triple landing staircase was introduced into staircase 8. With the guidance of my colleagues, I managed to resolved the headroom issue by taking into account of alignment of steps and height of risers. Beam alignment is crucial for precast r.c. staircase installment and drop is to be taken care of for the area with no roof at level 9A.

Drawing - Digitalising Manual Drawings

The project tasked to renovate a villa. I was given a set of manual drawings of elevations and sections. The drawings were to be digitalised for renovation design scheme proposal. From the set of manual drawings, I have better understanding on projection lines and lineweight. Manual drawings allow occurrence of errors to the extent of selected scale, hence, some of the details of the drawings were to be ďŹ gured out in the process based on other drawings.

Modelling

I was assigned to produce two physical 1:1 detail models for door frame detail and R.C. ramp detail whereby one of the ramp gradient was 1:35 and the other was 1:2. They were two options provided to client regarding to the bath toilet door. The option whereby the ramp gradient is 1:35 is easier to be constructed and is more economic. More tiles are needed for the other option since there are two surfaces to be tiled : 38mm at cut tile adjacent to timber capping and ramp. Through this, I have more understanding towards the details of door, drop and ramp. It is important to wisely consider each details position and evaluate them in section and plan to ensure the details to be workable, economic, eďŹƒcient and also aesthetic.

Reflection

Through this module, I gained up-to-date knowledge and get the opportunity to brush up my skills in a professional working environment. I realised that all the reverie and imagination towards architecture will end up compromising under practicality and economy issue. I learned how a good design would work under real-life situation with proper construction details and reasonable dimension to all spaces. An architect must not only possess the ability to design but knowledge to all related fields. A workable building design would always come with comprehensive construction details proposal. I would like to express my sincerest appreciation towards Mr. Azmi, my supervisor at Akitek Akiprima. I gained insight towards different phases, from conceptual and schematic design stage to construction and issued drawings stage by working on different projects under his extensive guidance. I was exposed to multiple real-life issues regarding to practicality and cost-efficiency of design which were not thoroughly considered during design studio projects in university. Also, I would like to express my gratitude for Ar. Lee Sze Ee as my academic supervisor during the internship period for her enlightening encouragement and commitment.
