My name is Lorrie Bloodworth Chastain and I am a candidate on the Republican ballot for Wilcox County Tax Commissioner for the May 24, 2016 primary election. I am running for that office because of my desire to utilize my relevant experiences to help manage the county's financial affairs and my belief that I am well suited for the position. My husband, Todd, and I were both born and raised in Wilcox County and chose to stay in Wilcox to raise our family. We have one son, Jackson, who is 12 and has attended school in Wilcox County since he started pre-K. Our ties to the community are strong and numerous, and Wilcox County is dear to our hearts. I have been employed by Doster Warehouse for the past 25 years. My involvement with the different operational and financial aspects of the business has given me invaluable, applicable experience to do a good job as Tax Commissioner. That experience includes managing accounts payables and receivables; balancing accounts for month end closes; and conducting routine audits relating to year-end financial statements, customer satisfaction, yearly certification, and various audits at the state and federal levels. I recently helped implement a Quality Management System for McCleskey Mills/Doster Warehouse that incorporates all policies and procedures, as well as quality and procedural forms used in the company. Transferring my skills and experiences used in the size environment of McCleskey/Doster should lend itself well to the office of Tax Commissioner. Since the retail portion of Doster Warehouse is no longer active, I miss the daily connection with the good people of our county. The joy and pleasure I get from that interaction, as well as my desire to serve, are the main reasons I hope to serve as your next Tax Commissioner. Bobby Gibbs has done and is doing a fantastic job as Wilcox County Tax Commissioner and is leaving some big shoes for someone to fill. Wilcox County has been fortunate to have Bobby serve as its' Tax Commissioner for the last forty years and he will be greatly missed. Everyone who enters the tax office is greeted with respect, kindness and a smile. If elected as your next Tax Commissioner, I promise that you will be greeted with that same level of respect, kindness and professionalism that Bobby has always shown. I hope the people of Wilcox County will elect me with enthusiasm and confidence of knowing that I will do the best job that I can for our county. With that in mind, I humbly ask for your support and vote on May 24th. In between now and then, I hope to see many of you in person, although, as some of you know, I had an unfortunate accident and am a bit handicapped from a broken ankle. It's on the mend so I hope to get out and see people on a one on one basis; however, if I don't get to talk to you personally, please remember me on May 24th when you go to the polls. I look forward to being of service to you all. Thank you, Lorrie B. Chastain

PASS staff trains to cope with “Compassion Fatigue” On March 7, 2016, PASS teachers and paraprofessionals attended a professional learning seminar facilitated by Dr. Marcus McBride. Dr. McBride is a professor at Columbus State University and Director of Education & Training for Goodwill Industries of the Southern Rivers. His topic was Love the job, Hate the stress, “Compassion Fatigue”. Dr. McBride acknowledged the difficulties of working with at-risk children in areas with high poverty rates and little industry. He encouraged staff to support the students as well as each other each day. He suggested strategies incorporating positive language when working with children to build self-confidence and worth. This is a necessity for motivating at-risk students. Mid-way the presentation, lunch was provided along with door prizes to PASS staff. Project Director, Ginny Clack commended the staff for their outstanding commitment to the program and dedication in helping at-risk students be successful in school. Wooden initials carved by Family Engagement Coordinator, Jena Rossman adorned appreciation gift bags presented to each staff member. Anonymous surveys completed by staff indicated this to be a much needed professional development topic. Teachers expressed a fresh outlook and motivation to try new strategies from the presentation.

PASS Completes Mid-Year Evaluation The PASS program recently completed their formative (mid-year) evaluation with Norris Consulting Firm. Carol Norris attended our February management team meeting to discuss due results. Computer generated reports analyzed attendance, report card grades and regular day teacher surveys. 1st nine weeks grades were compared to 2nd nine weeks grades and science in particular was a focus. In the PASS 2014-15 evaluation, nine of ten academic objectives were achieved. The science objective did not meet the required standard specified in the grant. In comparing report card grades for the first two grading periods, we are cautiously optimistic that our program changes are making a difference in student achievement. With the return to the traditional five day school week, highly qualified teachers were recruited. On Mondays and Wednesdays, there is a strong focus on science and math and Tuesdays and Thursdays focus on reading and social studies. Enrichment activities are offered every day. Our PASS teachers work closely with our regular day teachers to ensure that instruction aligns with classroom standards. In addition, regular classroom teachers communicate to our PASS staff areas of instruction that need the most attention. Attendance is vital to student achievement and we constantly seek means to recruit and retain students in the program. Participation at the Elementary remains high and on track to meet the FY16 attendance objective. The M/high site did not meet their FY15 attendance objective and therefore received a reduction in funding. We are pleased that the M/High site appears to be on track to exceed this year's attendance objective. Based on these results, we are hopeful to have full funding reinstated for the coming school year. Based on our evaluation, we do not feel the need for any major revisions, but will continue to monitor program and work with staff to maintain and improve quality instruction.
