PASS Students Hike Georgia's Little Grand Canyon With their motto, “Adventures in Learning-Join PASS” on April 14, 2014, students traveled to Providence Canyon in Lumpkin, GA. Providence Canyon is a 1,008 acre park and is listed as one of the seven wonders of GA It has been referred to as the Little Grand Canyon. Taking advantage of the winds generated by the canyon, middle high students worked with the Park staff to construct and fly a kite. Elementary students joined park guides for a tour and 3 mile hike into the canyon. The canyon walls provide a spectacular view with 43 different colors of soil and rock sediment. Although the canyon provides an interesting and beautiful sight, it also demonstrates the influence of poor farming techniques and erosion. Providence Canyon was formed during the early 1800's by repeated clearing of forest land for farming while taking no measures to avoid soil erosion. Students observed the forces of nature and influence of people on the creation of the canyon. After a picnic lunch and recreation time, middle high students hiked the canyon and elementary students participated in the kite activity. Thanks to contributions from several PASS partners, students enjoyed a McDonald's meal on the return trip to school. The PASS program seeks to provide educational and enriching activities both in the classroom and through field trips to experience first-hand opportunities. We encourage Wilcox County Students to take advantage of the PASS Program's Adventures in Learning.
Everyone around here already knows about the great taste and flavor that is in the Oliver Farm peanut, pecan and sunflower oils, but now, so does most of
Georgia! Clay Oliver, owner and operator of Oliver Farm Unique Southern Artisan Oils was recently selected as one of four finalist in the Flavor of Georgia Contest. There were approximately 15 vying for a finalist position. Clay and his wife Valerie traveled to Atlanta to the Georgia Freight Depot on Monday March 17th where they joined several other vendors for a Legislative "Meet and Greet" where the products were sampled and judged. The final judging was also on Monday evening by a panel of 15 judges with backgrounds ranging from retail, restaurants, chefs, Kroger and The University of Georgia Product Development team. The winners were announced on Tuesday, March 18th at the National Agriculture Week KickOff where we are celebrating agriculture in Georgia. There were several hundred guests that came through on Tuesday including 4-H'ers, FFA'ers, and other community leaders. Key note speakers were Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and Governor Nathan Deal. Comments were also given by Scott Angle, Dean of The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. There were several other distinguished guests also attending the Ag-Day celebration. Clay and Valerie were entered in the "Miscellaneous" Category with four others including Hardy Farms. Hardy Farms was announced the winner in this category. It was still a great experience and Clay said that he learned a lot for next year's competition and the exposure was fantastic for his famous Pecan Oil. Good luck next year Clay, you are always a winner in our eyes! You can check out Oliver Farm on Facebook and email ifarmueat@hotmail.com or 229-406-0906.
