On June 25, 2015 parents joined students on the last day of Summer School for a program featuring special guests, Kelsey Norris and Steven Turner. Kelsey is a unique young lady with many talents. She is winner of many beauty pageants and enjoys the competition and opportunity to meet new people and travel around the state of GA. She enjoys competitive cheerleading and swimming and her goal is to Kelsey Norris shared her represent GA in the Special Junior inspiring story with PASS students, staff, and families Olympics. She has a passion for animals and raises money for animal shelters and has adopted two dogs from shelters who are her closest friends. Kelsey was born in Russia and adopted from an orphanage at an early age. At 11 months, she weighed only 14 lbs. Presently, she is a fourth grade autistic special education student at Bonaire Elementary School. She believes that individuals with disabilities can achieve great things in life and make a tremendous positive difference in the lives of others. Her story was interesting and inspiring for our PASS students and guests. This year, Steven Turner has worked for our PASS program. Between his eighth and ninth grade year he attended PASS summer school. He is a member of the WCHS chorus and the elite TRI-M. He participated in boys' quartet who placed 2nd in literary competition. Steven is also a member of the WCHS football team. Steven entertained the audience with his rendition of “Celebration”. Families were invited to view the “Art in a Box” projects that students completed during the week. Art Council members, Carol Harden and Susan Cravey judged projects and prizes (donated by PASS Partners) were awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade winners by grade level. Following the blessing of the meal by Pastor Danny Rhodes, parents enjoyed a delicious spaghetti lunch prepared by cafeteria staff. The PASS program will begin a new chapter in the fall as Wilcox Schools move to the traditional five day week. Parents of at risk students are encouraged to take advantage of this free and unique assistance for your child. Certified teachers will work with students in small groups to strengthen skills and assist with homework. Credit repair and recovery is available for high school students. An afternoon snack and evening meal will be served. Please contact your child's school for further information.

Wiregrass producing Georgia Teachers Valdosta – Wiregrass is not only producing, business managers, industrial electricians, or medical assistants; Wiregrass is also helping produce Georgia’s teachers. Wiregrass has been serving as a program provider for the Georgia Teacher Academy for Preparation and Pedagogy (GaTAPP) program. Over the past two years 14 candidates have completed the program under the direction of Wiregrass. This year, all 8 candidates have passed and exceeded the national average on the new teacher education preparation assessment, edTPA. "We are very proud of how well our candidates performed on the edTPA which measures their classroom effectiveness as a teacher. We have a strong, experienced GaTAPP faculty at Wiregrass who work with our candidates to ensure student learning in the classroom," said April McDuffie, GaTAPP Coordinator and Associate Vice President of the Ben Hill-Irwin Campus. The GaTAPP program enables those individuals with a Bachelor’s degree of higher to transition into the teaching profession through an alternative path. An associate degree is acceptable in certain Career Technical Agricultural and Education (CTAE) areas. Wiregrass is the first technical college in the state of Georgia to be approved to offer the GaTAPP program. Applications for the 2015-2016 GaTAPP program are now being accepted. To be eligible for GaTAPP, the teacher candidate must have secured a provisional teaching position in the PreK – 12 education classroom. GaTAPP candidates will begin with a two-week summer course on July 6 – 16 and take various courses/seminars throughout the school year. The program is conducted through extensive training, classroom observations, and field experiences. The candidates can take 1 – 3 years to complete all requirements for certification. Wiregrass is approved for the GaTAPP comprehensive path in all subjective areas. However, as an expert in technical and career education, Wiregrass is a leading GaTAPP provider for CTAE teachers. Since Wiregrass has been overseeing the program the first cohort of 6 completed candidates earned their clear renewable certificate in the following areas: business education, early childhood education, health and physical education, secondary English, and secondary mathematics. The cohort that began July 2014 consists of candidates in the following areas: agriculture, early childhood education, foreign language- Korean and Spanish, middle grades mathematics, secondary biology, secondary math, and secondary social science. The 8 candidates for this year and the schools were they teach are: Georgina Kassum, Spanish teacher at St. Johns Catholic School, Valdosta; Corinne Auguste, Pre-K teacher at Kids-R-Us, Brunswick; Young Ran Song, Korean teacher at Highland Academy, Valdosta; Eric Wingate, Math teacher at Williams Middle School, Moultrie; Pamela Ross, Agriculture Teacher at Lowndes Middle School, Valdosta; Nora Eakin, Math teacher at Lowndes High School, Valdosta; Chris Merritt, Social Science teacher at Cook High School, Adel; and Willis Colson, Science teacher at Georgia Christian Academy, Valdosta. Students working on art projects during the last week of summer PASS. Celebrate Summer The students in the PASS summer school program have worked extremely hard to improve their skills and prepare for the upcoming school year. Approximately 64 students at the Elementary Site and 75 at the Middle/High Site have attended summer school consistently in order to receive extra remediation and recover credits. In a small group setting, our staff prepared lessons to strengthen areas of weakness and give students individual attention as needed. Due to the changes in moving from the CRCT to GA Milestones testing, results will not be available until school resumes. Therefore, no retests were given during the summer session. We commend students and staff for their efforts and look forward to the new scheduling for the PASS program this fall.

Equipping Future Automotive Technicians at Wiregrass Fitzgerald, Ga. – Students in the A u t o m o t i v e Technology program at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College recently received a tool bag and specialized training by Airtex Corporation. Richard Young, Training Manager for Airtex Corporation, visited the Ben Hill-Irwin Campus of Wiregrass recently to conduct a 3-hour training so that students could learn testing and diagnosing of the fuel system and the new direct fuel injection system now on most new vehicles. In addition to the specialized training, all 19 students received a tool bag valued at $150, that included fuel pressure tester, multimeter, fuel line removing tool and a pair of work gloves valued at $150. Airtex is one of the largest aftermarket fuel pump and fuel system suppliers in today’s automotive market. The specialized training was arranged by Fitzgerald’s Advance Auto Parts store. “We truly appreciate the partnership with Advance Auto Parts in arranging for this training and very appreciative to Airtex in what they were able to provide for our students,” shared Jesse Davis, Automotive Technology Program Coordinator. “Our students were thrilled to know the tools they were given is something they won’t have to purchase on their own once they graduate. Right now, graduates in this program are being heavily recruited with some landing jobs before graduation.” Davis arranged his teaching schedule for two of his spring semester graduates, who are already employed, so they could complete their program and graduate. Those interested in the automotive program or any other program at Wiregrass can visit wiregrass.edu to learn more.
