PASS Program Receives Favorable Evaluation for School Year In the spring of 2014 the Wilcox County School System applied for and received a five year 21st Century Grant to fund the PASS program. The PASS program is designed to meet the academic and enrichment needs of at- risk students and increase parent involvement. The program takes place after normal school hours and provides additional tutoring and small group academic support. As a critical element of the grant, ten objectives were established to measure the progress of the students enrolled in the program and provide accountability of the implementation of the program. In our end of the year summary conducted by Norris Consulting Company, we are pleased that nine of the ten objectives met or exceeded the goals established in the grant. Academic goals include math, reading and language arts, social studies and science. Although, students did show improvement in the area of science, the objective was not met. We will continue to research and discuss the underlying reasons for not obtaining the science objective. Other objectives for the program that were met include fewer disciplinary referrals to office, increased attendance and participation in family involvement activities. Based on the end of the year surveys, students, parents, teachers and staff gave the program a positive rating. Administrators will continue to search for ways to maintain and improve program quality. The PASS program will undergo schedule changes with the return to the traditional five day school week. More information will be provided as it becomes available. If your child could benefit from the extra academic support or enriching activities, please contact your child's school.
