Our Vision The vision of Wilcox County Schools is to provide a learning community Where all educators, staff, and parents Inspire students to Learn and master Curriculum that allows Opportunities for all graduates to eXel academically, socially, and professionally.
Our Motto
We Believe In You!
As you are reading this special pull-out section of The Wilcox Marketer, we are preparing for the new school year, which officially begins with Open House at all schools this Friday, July 25 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Please feel free to stop by the schools and visit with your child's teachers and administrators. Also, please plan to drop by the FREE Informational Health Fair at the Wilcox County Elementary School gym during the same time. We look forward to serving the children of Wilcox County, and we are excited about the upcoming year. Here are some of the changes going on this school year: ? Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all students at no cost this school year. ? The PASS program will continue, as the school system has received a five-year renewal of the grant. ? The high school SIG (School Improvement Grant) Grant has ended, and the WAVE building has been removed. However, high school students will still have access to the technology provided by the grant, and the Honors program will continue. ? High school students may earn college credit through our partnership with Wiregrass Georgia Technical College. Many of our students earned nine (9) hours of college credit while also receiving high school credit by spending one period per day in ACCEL courses. These courses were offered on the WCHS campus FREE of Charge to our students! ? The 508 Google Chromebooks purchased last year will continue to be utilized in every reading, writing and English/Language Arts (ELA) classroom in grades 2-8 and math in grades 6-8, and the Board recently approved the purchase of an additional 120 Google Chromebooks for use in math in grades 3-5. ? The plans for building a new K-12 school to serve all students continue to move forward. If you would like to serve on the planning and design committee, please contact me via email, telephone, or letter. The next six months will be critical for this committee. Our first meeting will be Monday, August 4 at 2:00 pm at the Board office in Abbeville. ? In order to secure the funding for the new K-12 school, we will be asking voters to renew the existing Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) at the general election in November. Supporting this referendum will NOT increase taxes, but will merely extend the current SPLOST already in place. ? This past school year, we began offering online classes for students who wanted an alternative to traditional school. Half of the students who began the program returned to traditional school because they discovered that online does not mean easier, but different. Interest in the program continues to grow, and if you are interested, just contact the counselor at the school where your student would normally attend. ? One of the biggest challenges our students face is the lack of Internet access from home. With the recent changes to the E-Rate program from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), very soon we hope to offer high-speed Internet access to students' homes at little or no cost. More information will be coming soon. ? Testing in Georgia is changing. The Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT) was phased out last year, and the CRCT and EOCT will change to Georgia Milestones Assessments this school year. These tests will be much more rigorous (difficult), with short-answer and multiple-choice questions. Despite what the media and politicians might say, the cuts to education funding have not been completely restored. We appreciate the additional $300 million earmarked for K-12 public education austerity reduction for next school year, but the fact remains that the state will continue to cut public schools by nearly $747 million next year. In Wilcox County, funding for our students will be cut $614,000 this school year. We have removed furlough days for teachers and staff from our schedule this school year, but we will be forced to use reserves to help cover the continued cuts. Since 2003, the state has cut funding for Wilcox County Schools approximately $8.4 million, with $6.7 million of those cuts coming over the past five years added to this year's cuts. We trust that the Governor and Legislature will continue to restore funding to public education as the economy improves. We are blessed to be part of such a supportive and wonderful community, and we are all on the same team. We may occasionally disagree about certain decisions, but we make every decision with one concern: “How will this affect our students?” I sincerely hope you follow the Apostle Paul's command in Ephesians 4:29 “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Maybe that little rabbit named Thumper in the Bambi movie said it best, “If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.” Those are words we can all live by. If you have a praise to share about our school system, please tell everyone you know. If you have a concern, please tell me. I encourage you to speak directly with the teacher, bus driver, or staff person with whom you have a concern first, and if still unresolved, then their supervisor to see if the problem or misunderstanding can be cleared up quickly. However, I want you to know that my door is truly open for you: my phone numbers are 229-467-2141 Ext 25 (office) and 478-230-4198 (cell), and my email address is smiths@wilcox.k12.ga.us. I would love to hear from you. I pray that this school year brings blessings to this community, our parents, our students, our Wilcox County Schools family of employees, and to you. Steve J. Smith, Superintendent

Patriot Academy for School Success (PASS) Program Grant Funding Renewed The Patriot Academy for School Success (PASS) program grant funding has been renewed for five years. The PASS program begins on August 11, 2014. The PASS program is open to all students in grades 2-12 needing additional help in core academic subjects (reading, writing, math, science, and social studies). This year, math and science will be offered for a week and then reading, language, and social studies will be taught the alternating week. This will allow students needing help in only one or two subjects an opportunity to attend PASS. PASS meets all day on Monday and for one hour on Tuesday through Thursday after school. The program is grant funded and operates through 21st Century Community Learning Center federal dollars. The program serves students at Wilcox Elementary and students at Wilcox Middle/High School. Applications will be available during open house. Please sign your child up early to receive this extra academic assistance. For more information, contact Tim Conner at Wilcox Elementary or Nathan Gibbs at Wilcox Middle & High School.

School Attendance is Critical! Students are expected to be present at school and to arrive and depart on time in accordance with the provisions of the Georgia compulsory attendance law. All children between the ages of 6 and 16 are required to attend school. Students who are absent or tardy miss valuable instructional time as well as other important school activities. Chronic tardiness and absence from school results in a student being less likely to master those skills and concepts needed to be successful in life and to achieve on his/her respective grade level. Absenteeism and tardiness are disruptive to the “teaching-learning process. Students are expected to be regular in attendance, to arrive at school on time in the morning, and to remain at school until the end of the day. Student attendance shall be recorded daily, and any instructional time missed due to late arrival or early departure shall be recorded at the time it occurs. Students who miss instruction due to absence, tardiness or early departure are expected to present written excuses signed by the parent or guardian stating the reason for the absence, tardy or early departure. The written excuses should be provided to your child's teacher within three days of returning to school. Administration may require that only doctor excuses be accepted for repeat absences. Students of driving age will also be reported to the Department of Driver Services when 8 or more absences are accumulated. Suspension or revocation of the student's license to drive may occur.

Employees, students and the general public are hereby notified that the Wilcox County Board of Education does not discriminate in any educational programs or activities or in its employment policies or practices. The Wilcox County Career and Technical Education Department does not discriminate in enrollment or access to any of the programs available. The lack of English language skills shall not be a barrier to admission or participation in the district's activities or programs. The Wilcox County School System does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability in admission to its programs, services, or activities, in access to them, in treatment of individuals, or in any aspect of their operations. Changes to Breakfast and Lunch Costs
Effective July 1, 2014, Wilcox County School System has been approved to participate in USDA's Community Eligibility Program (CEP). This program will provide meals to all students at NO cost. CEP uses only direct certification data to identify students and no longer collects any applications. This will eliminate the need for household applications for free and reduced-priced meals. Children will continue to receive the same nutritionally balanced meals daily. Our meal pattern will not change due to CEP. Students will still see brightly colored fruits and vegetables and whole-grain menu items. Please feel free to call Jenni Brown, Nutrition Director, at (229-467-2141 ext 22) or email (brownje@wilcox.k12.ga.us) if you have any questions. We look forward to serving your child healthy and nutritious meals this school year at NO cost to students!
Federal Designations for Georgia Schools The Georgia Department of Education has given public schools new designations as part of its waiver from federal No Child Left Behind accountability mandates. “Needs improvement” and “adequate yearly progress” are a thing of the past. In their place will be: Reward Schools-Title I Schools-Highest Performing percent of Title I Schools and Highest Progress Schools 10 percent of Title I Schools Reward Schools' designations will replace Distinguished Schools and Distinguished Districts designations. Reward Schools will be identified annually. There are two ways a Title I school may be identified as a Rewards School: (1.) Highest-Performing school or (2.) High-Progress School Priority Schools-Title I Students Eligibility5 percent of Title I Schools Lowest Achieving Schools Priority Schools are identified every three years and the identified school will be served for 3 years through Flexible Learning Program (FLP) or Increased Learning time (ILT) support interventions. These Title I schools are among the lowest five percent of Title I schools in the state based on the achievement of the All Students group in terms of proficiency on the statewide assessments and has demonstrated a lack of progress on those assessments over a number of years in the All Students group; are a Title I-participating or Title I-eligible high school with a graduation rate less than 60 percent over a number of years; or a Tier I or Tier II school under the School Improvement Grants (SIG) program that is using SIG funds to implement a school intervention model years. WILCOX HIGH SCHOOL HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A PRIORITY SCHOOL AS A RESULT OF THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT GRANT (SIG 1003g). WILCOX HIGH SCHOOL IS IMPLEMENTING A TRANSFORMATION INTERVENTION MODEL AND IS DEVELOPING A FLEXIBLE LEARNING PROGRAM. Focus Schools-Title I Student Eligibility-10 percent of Title I Schools Focus Schools are identified every three years and the identified school will be served for 3 years through Flexible Learning Program (FLP) support interventions. These schools are Title I participating high schools with a graduation rate less than 60 percent over two years; or Title I schools that has the largest within-school gaps between the highest-achieving subgroup or subgroups and the lowest-achieving subgroup or subgroups, or at the high school level, has the largest within-school gaps in graduation rates (within-school-gaps Focus School). WILCOX MIDDLE SCHOOL HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A FOCUS SCHOOL DUE TO ACHIEVEMENT GAPS BETWEEN THE HIGHEST PERFORMING WHITE STUDENT SUBGROUP AND THE LOWEST PERFORMING STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES SUBGROUP. THE SCHOOL IS CONTINUING A FLEXIBLE LEARNING PROGRAM. Title I Alert Schools Based on 9 ESEA Subgroups-(does not include Priority Schools or Focus Schools) Title I, Alert Schools are identified annually. These schools are both Title I and non-Title I schools that fall into one of the three following categories using ESEA disaggregated subgroups or subject performance on both statewide assessments and graduation rate: Graduation Alert, Subgroup Alert or Subject Alert WILCOX ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED WITH ANY OF THE NEW DESIGNATIONS. If you have questions about the available programs and services offered at your child's school or the status of your child's school under Georgia's new designations, please contact their principal or Julie Childers Assistant Superintendent.
