News from the Superintendent In 5 days our students will begin another wonderful school year! Let me begin by telling you how honored I am to serve as your school superintendent. I have been blessed to work in the school system for the last 18 years and I cherish each day I get to spend with our students, staff, and parents. I want to highlight some of the exciting changes for this school term. Information for ALL SCHOOLS: ? All schools are returning to a five day school week. A school calendar is included in this edition of the Marketer. th ? Open House for all schools is Thursday, August 6 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Please come visit with your child's teacher. ? After much school and community input, a district strategic plan was developed and approved in the spring. This plan outlines initiatives for the next five years. During the strategic planning process, our school system's vision and mission were updated. Our mission is “Preparing Productive Citizens” and our Vision is “All students will Excel Academically, Socially, and Professionally.” ? Parent Involvement events will occur on Thursdays throughout the school year. A schedule will be posted in the Marketer by midAugust. ? The Patriot Academy for School Success (PASS) will operate after school from 3:10 until 6:10 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Dinner will be served to students before departing for home. ? Plans for the new K-12 school continue to progress. Parrish Construction Company has been selected as the construction management firm and SRJ Architects has been approved to design the new school. Please provide input on the new school at open house by completing a survey during Open House. Changes at WILCOX COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL (WCES): ? Class will begin promptly at 8:15 a.m. If your child would like to eat breakfast, please ensure they arrive before 7:50 a.m. School dismisses at 3:00 p.m. ? A conversational Spanish class was added to the CAMPE rotation to increase language development. ? Remediation/enrichment classes were added at grades K-5 to assist students with reading and math skills. ? CAMPE rotations are scheduled for nine weeks. Therefore, students will have nine weeks of PE, nine weeks of music, etc. instead of changing each week. ? A daily fifteen to twenty minute physical activity time is available to all students. Changes at WILCOX MIDDLE SCHOOL (WCMS): ? Class begins at 8:00 a.m. If your child would like to eat breakfast, please ensure they arrive between 7:30 a.m. and 7:50 a.m. each morning. School dismisses at 3:06 p.m. ? Wilcox Middle School was removed from the Focus Schools list due to increased academic achievement. Congratulations WCMS staff and students! ? Reading and Language Arts will be taught during one academic block at Wilcox Middle School to ensure seamless alignment between the subjects. ? Career Explorations and Art classes have been added as Connections classes at Wilcox Middle School. ? Each grade level will have a separate lunch period at Wilcox Middle School. ? New cameras have been installed at Wilcox Middle School to monitor students. Changes at WILCOX HIGH SCHOOL (WCHS): ? Class begins at 8:00 a.m. If your child would like to eat breakfast, please ensure they arrive between 7:30 a.m. and 7:50 a.m. each morning. School dismisses at 3:06 p.m. ? High school students will take four classes each semester instead of seven year-long classes. The school has returned to a block schedule instead of a traditional six period day schedule so students have more opportunities to earn required credits for graduation. ? A Patriot Period will begin at Wilcox High School. This thirty minute class right before or after your child's lunch is designed to remediate and/or extend learning opportunities. Most importantly, students can receive extra help in core academic subjects such as Math or English. Additionally, classes will be offered to help students complete job applications, prepare for the SAT/ACT, complete scholarship and FAFSA applications, attend club meetings, make up homework/classwork, and receive advisement on their individual graduation plan. th th th th ? Students in 9 and 10 grade will eat second lunch and students in 11 and 12 grade will eat first lunch. While two grades are eating lunch, the other students will be in Patriot Period. th ? Wiregrass Technical College will extend college classes to 9 grade students at Wilcox High School. th th ? Under the new block schedule, 10 through 12 grade eligible students can earn 12 semester hours of college credit each year while enrolled in high school. Most classes are free of charge to students. ? Online classes through FuelEd will be available again this year to students wanting to complete virtual classes in lieu of traditional classes. If interested, talk with your child's school counselor for more information. ? Juniors participating in college classes have an opportunity to enroll in Work Based Learning classes. ? Students at Wilcox High School were able to pick up schedules two weeks before school and can also pick up their schedule during th Open House on August 6 . No changes will be made after the first day of school. th ? Student lockers and parking passes should be purchased during Open House on August 6 . The cost for a parking pass and a locker is $5.00 each. ? New cameras have been installed at Wilcox High School to monitor students. Changes at Wilcox Alternative Learning Center (WALC): ? The Wilcox Alternative Learning Center (WALC) will operate from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. instead of having late evening classes. Dinner will be served to students before departing for home. ?

Once again, I want to offer my deep gratitude to all of you for giving me the opportunity to lead our school system. I cherish the work our staff, parents, and community members do each and every day to make our students the best they can be. Please feel free to contact me at 229-457-2387 with your questions or comments. I value your input. Thank you again for your continued commitment to our children's education and unwavering dedication to Wilcox County Schools. Go Patriots!

Wilcox County PASS Program Receives Funding As the PASS program enters into the second year of the five year grant cycle, we are pleased to announce that we have received funding for 2015-16. The 21st Century grant was written and accepted for a five year period; however, the program is evaluated each year by the state Department of Education. The evaluation determines whether the goals and objectives set for the program are being met and the program is fiscally sound. A favorable evaluation ensures funding for the continuation of the PASS program. On July 16, 2015, School Superintendent Julie Childers received official notification that Patriot Academy for School Success would indeed be funded for the 2015-16 school year. Attendance is a critical element of the grant. Based on the average daily attendance at the Middle/High Site, funds were reduced to serve fewer students. This year's challenge is to increase ADA at the Middle/High Site in order to have full funding restored for 2016-17. The Elementary Site will continue serve to same number of students as in 2014-15. Parents are an integral part of the program's success and we strongly encourage families to take advantage of the services offered for students. Credit Recovery, academic tutoring, homework help are all offered, as well as enrichment activities. Transportation, nutritious snacks and an evening meal are provided. We are excited to begin a new year of PASS and grateful to have this resource for Wilcox County students. Many communities throughout the state submitted grant applications and did not receive funding. With the return to the traditional five day school week, there will be changes to accommodate that schedule. More information will be forthcoming. Please contact your child's school or program director, Ginny Clack if your child can benefit from these services.

Immunization Requirements Georgia Law requires children attending school (Kindergarten 12th grade) to be age appropriately immunized with all the required vaccines at the time of first entry in school. A new entrant is a child entering a school in Georgia for the first time or entering after having been absent from a Georgia school for more than 12 months or one school year. All students, regardless of grade and including foreign exchange students, must have the Georgia Department of Human Resources Form 3231 immunization certificate marked “Complete for School unless any of the following situations exist: 1. Medical exemption: in this case the 3231 has an expiration date no more than 12 months from date of issue. There must be an annual review of the medical exemption and the certificate must be reissued with or without indication of the medical exemption. 2. Religious exemption: For a child to be exempt from immunization on religious grounds, the parent or guardian must furnish the school with a notarized statement and it must meet the following criteria: (A) State that their religious beliefs conflict with immunization requirements; (B) the statement must be signed and dated by the parent/guardian; (C) The statement must be notarized, dated, and signed by a Notary Public; (D) The statement should be submitted to the school in lieu of an immunization certificate (form 3231); (E) The statement does not expire. 3. Waiver of 30 calendar days granted to new entrants by the superintendent or designee. 4. Waiver of 90 calendar days may be granted by the superintendent or designee to students entering Georgia public schools from out of state, if documentation is on file from the county health department or a medical doctor stating that an immunization sequence has been started and can be completed within the 90 day waiver period. 5. Immunizations are required for diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chicken pox). Protection against each of these diseases must be addressed on the form 3231. The form can be computer generated and if the child attends more than one school, an original or a photocopy of the form must be submitted to the second school. Effective July 1, 2014, all children born on or after January 1, 2002 who are attending seventh grade, and children who are new entrants into a Georgia school in grades eight through twelve, must have received one dose of Tdap vaccine and one dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine. Please check with your child's pediatrician or with the public health department to ensure that your child's immunizations are current. All immunizations should be completed no later than August 31, 2015.

School Bus Safety

Considering the cargo, our children, school buses are perhaps the most important vehicles on the road to keep safe. Since the start of a new school year is here, keep in mind that you need to slow down for buses and school speed zones. While the school bus itself is safe, the 10 feet in front, behind and on each side of a stationary school bus constitute a danger zone. When you're driving on a road without a median, and you see a school bus pull to a stop and flash its signals, make sure you come to a complete stop as well. Regardless of the side of the street you're on, brake and watch for students crossing to their homes. Before you start driving again, wait until the bus starts moving or stops flashing its signals. .

Page 10, The Wilcox Marketer, August 3, 2015

School Attendance is Critical! All children between the ages of 6 and 16 are required to attend school. Students are expected to be regular in attendance, to arrive at school on time in the morning, and to remain at school until the end of the day. Student attendance shall be recorded daily, and any instructional time missed due to late arrival or early departure shall be recorded at the time it occurs. Students who miss instruction due to absence, tardiness or early departure are expected to present written excuses signed by the parent or guardian stating the reason for the absence, late arrival, or early departure. The written excuses should be provided to your child's teacher within three days of returning to school. Administration may require doctor excuses for repeat absences.

Wilcox Middle School Removed from Focus List As part of the waiver from the No Child Left Behind, the Georgia Department of Education is required to identify Reward Schools, Priority Schools and Focus Schools, which are determined based on achievement data from all core content areas, graduation rate data, and gap between the highest performing and lowest performing subgroups based on achievement and graduation rate data. In July 2015, Wilcox Middle School was removed from the Focus Schools list because they no longer meet the definition of a Priority or Focus School and they met the required achievement criteria to be removed from the list. Wilcox High School will remain on the Priority list due to not meeting the required achievement gains. The graduation rate at Wilcox High School has steadily improved but students are still struggling with the math curriculum. Schools deemed a “priority school” fall in the lowest 5 percent of Title I schools in the state based on achievement. Schools classified as “focus schools” are in the lowest 10 percent of Title I schools in terms of the achievement gap between the school's bottom quartile of students and the state average. “Identifying priority and focus schools allows us to offer targeted assistance where it is needed most,” state school Superintendent Richard Woods said. “The Georgia Department of Education will work with the schools identified to ensure they have the resources they need to provide a quality education for their students.” Once a school is designated a priority or focus school, it's a three-year process to come off the list. Wilcox High School will offer a flexible learning program to all eligible students during the newly implemented Patriot Period. A meeting is scheduled for Thursday August 6, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. at the Wilcox High School Lunchroom to review test data, collect parent/teacher/community input, gather parent involvement ideas, and discuss the Patriot Period (Flexible Learning Program) designed to increase the achievement of all students at Wilcox High School. Please plan to attend to provide input on our flexible learning program. Wilcox Elementary School was not named to the Focus or Priority List. ESEA PUBLIC SCHOOL CHOICE OPTIONS - Due to the state's ESEA wavier, Wilcox County School System is not required to offer the Federal School Choice option. Wilcox County School System is unable to offer intradistrict public school choice since there is only one school per grade span: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. If you have questions about the available programs and services offered at your child's school or the status of your child's school under Georgia's new designations, please contact their principal or Dale Garnto Federal Programs Director. House Bill 91 Notice On Monday, March 30, 2015, Governor Nathan Deal signed into law HB91, allowing students or former students, who have met all requirements for graduation but failed one or more parts of the Georgia High School Graduation Test or Basic Skills Tests, to receive a diploma upon petitioning the local board of education. An individual (hereinafter referred to as “Student”) no longer enrolled in a Georgia public school and who previously failed to receive a high school diploma in this state or was denied graduation solely for failing to achieve a passing score on one or more portions of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests or its predecessor or the Georgia High School Writing Test or its predecessor may petition the local board of education in which he or she was last enrolled to determine the Student's eligibility to receive a high school diploma pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 20-2-281.1 based on the graduation requirements in effect when the Student first entered ninth grade. Petitions can obtained in person at the Wilcox County Board of Education office or at Wilcox County High School. A completed petition must be returned to Wilcox County High School to determine a person's eligibility for a diploma. Once eligibility is determined the petition will be sent to the Wilcox County Board of Education for approval at the regular monthly meeting.
